Why I’m sad on birthday- filmmaker Pascal Atuma

Popular Nigerian-born filmmaker Pascal Atuma has explained the reasons for his sadness on his birthday.

Atuma, who turned 51 on Wednesday, said he is sad because of the state of things in Nigeria.

In a post on his official Instagram account, Atuma said he hasn’t found any reason to celebrate his birthday with Nigeria’s decadent state.

He wrote: “It’s my birthday today but sadly, I don’t see any reason to celebrate my birthday. I thank God I am alive, but seeing Nigeria decay and collapse to this level because of the selfishness and self-centeredness of a few people holding the country to ransom is heartbreaking,” he began.
Continuing, Atuma urged Nigerian youths and electorates to be wiser and vote for the best leader that would turn around the fortunes of the country.

“Do not die for any Nigerian politician or allow yourself to be used to commit their atrocities; they should bring their children back from their safe havens overseas to die for them and do their dirty jobs. They loot the country, transfer Nigeria’s wealth overseas with their children and come during elections to use children from poor and less privileged homes for thuggery, election malpractice, and destruction. It is not uncommon for children with low socioeconomic status to be used to eliminate individuals who constitute a nuisance to our greedy politicians.

“They should bring back their children from abroad to do their dirty and evil deeds in this election. Let Nigerians wake up and understand that the suffering in Nigeria today is MAN MADE; the politicians systematically created poverty and are using it to control the masses with intentions to retain power and control. It is time for Nigerians to rise and deliver the country from the wicked hands of these politicians and corrupt leaders.”
In furtherance, Atuma used the opportunity to explain the challenges he faced while shooting his upcoming film project, ‘The Imported Wives.’

“I was just in Nigeria filming for a new project, “The Imported Wives.” I had to use naira to buy naira to carry out the production. The ruggedness and understanding of my executive producer, Ms. Joy Madubuike, was the only reason why it was easy to justify spending additional naira to purchase naira. Unfortunately, permit me to say that Nigeria is in a total mess at this time.

“Something has got to give; Nigeria cannot continue this way; the country is literally at war, and all the characteristics of wartorn nations have already manifested to the fullest!!! Hunger, insecurity, fuel and electricity scarcity, bad roads, dilapidated hospitals, run-down public schools, etc.!!! We will continue to pray for the intervention of the almighty God. However, we must rise and use our permanent voters’ card to ensure that greedy and obsolete politicians do not find themselves in the corridors of power in Nigeria.”

Rita Okoro becomes first Nigerian board member of ISPA

The International Society for the Performing Arts (ISPA) has announced Rita Ezenwa-Okoro as the first-ever Nigerian board member.

Ezenwa-Okoro’s appointment was announced at the organization’s annual general meeting making her the first Nigerian and 4th African to sit on the board of ISPA in its almost 75 years of existence. She was unanimously voted to join the ISPA board to influence policy, thought leadership, and membership.

In her speech after the appointment, Ezenwa-Okoro said that she would play her role in helping the board achieve its aims and objectives. She said, “I am honored by the opportunity to serve on this distinguished board of leaders in the performing arts industry worldwide. Making history by being the first Nigerian to serve on the board of this renowned organization is more than I could ever have planned for in my career. I look forward to working with board members of ISPA to increase the percentage of Africans in its membership. In addition, ensure that the voices of African performing arts leaders are heard on this global platform.”

The new board member is the founder and lead visionary of Street Project Foundation, an NGO focused on facilitating opportunities for youth employment, social mobilization, and cross-cultural dialogue using creative arts as a tool. She is also the Executive Director of the Global Play Brigade (GPB), an international movement of performance activists, improvisers, clowns, musicians, dancers, educators, and therapists who use ‘play’ to unleash the human power of social transformation.

Rita is also an author of the book entitled ‘Doing. Being. Becoming. The foundation also deploys its United Nations and BMW award-winning tool, ‘Reflection Sessions,’ which uses play and performance to get young people across ethnic lines to share their stories of trauma, pain, healing, and purpose in a safe space called the circle of trust.

Other newly appointed board members are three notable global business leaders. Mark Ball, Artistic Director, Southbank Centre, UK; Martin Inthamoussu, Creative Economy Consultant at Interamerican Development Bank USA; and Paul Tam, Executive Director, Performing Arts, West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, Hong Kong, China.
