How to extend Afrobeats longevity, by Rocky Dawuni

GRAMMY Nominated musician, Rocky Dawuni has hinted on how Afrobeats artistes and stakeholders can avoid the genre’s extinction.

The Ghanaian born musician said that Africans must take advantage of the moment while owning the sound and describing it as African but not to a particular region of the continent.

Dawuni told The Nation during a pre-Grammy Nominees party in Lagos recently.

“If you look at the natural trajectory of sounds, you have to know that we need to take advantage of the moment, we can’t be worried about tomorrow but to take advantage of the now, the artists are playing in big venues and we have to broaden ourselves and say the sound is more African than putting it like its just Nigerian.

“We have to own it as an African Sound, by doing that the innovations infused into the longevity of the sound and I feel that that is the opportunity that lies in front of us, we need to own the Narrative, nobody is gonna come and define what Afrobeats sound is we must define what it is. If we see it that way and embrace the rest of Africa to also embrace and be behind this sound the we are gonna have the longevity that it deserves,” said Rocky.

He stressed that the genre must be expanded as there are many elements that define Afrobeats.

Dawuni’s sixth studio album titled Branches of The Same Tree was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album 2015 and Best Global Music Performance for his work “Neva Bow Down” in 2022 respectively.
