  • BOLANLE NINALOWO: Playing Jobe showed world part of my gift

BOLANLE NINALOWO: Playing Jobe showed world part of my gift

BOLANLE Ninalowo is a popular face on the Nigerian entertainment scene. He has played several roles as an actor and producer and even once ran a record label. The graduate of Accounting from Devry University, who also holds a Master’s degree in Branding and Marketing from Kellogg Branding School of Management, in Chicago, United States of America, has risen to become one of the most sought-after actors in Nollywood today. The Lagos State-born actor, who returned to Nigeria from the UStalks about his experiences, new role in a Netflix series and more in this interview with THE NATION’S ASSISTANT ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR GBENGA BADA.

Not many know your story, how did you achieve the success in Nollywood?

It has been a very tough and challenging journey for me. I have been in Nollywood for about 6 years plus now, it will be seven years in June. But I have done great things, I have been highly blessed by God and I never quit. I am not known to quit, because I believe winners don’t quit and quitters don’t win. So, with the grace of God, I have just been able to just keep going with resilience and determination. I will say my career has been highly impacted by Mary Remmy Njoku, wife of Jason Njoku, the owner of ROK studios and Iroko TV. I remember meeting Mary back in 2014, when I came into Nollywood. She did an audition for me when they needed a character in ‘The Husbands of Lagos TV Series’, then Iroko was launched in 2015. So, I auditioned in 2014, I got the role of ‘Wale Teniola Fernandez aka WTF’. That is how the journey started and I started working for ROK studios doing the small jobs and doing whatever comes in. I was doing that and with prayers, hard work and perseverance, I kept on going, looking for the next challenging scripts and that is how I got here now.

How would you describe your personality?

I am just a man, a man of grace. I am a determined person; I am a dreamer, a goal getter, pace setter and a fighter. I was born in Nigeria but relocated to the United States when I was 15 years old. I finished my high school in America; I have a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Devry University and I have a Master’s in branding and marketing from Kellogg Branding School of Management, both in Chicago. So, I am born into the Ninalowo family, second out of eight children, I have seven siblings and we are natives of Ikorodu.

You play Rambo in the new series, Far From home, did you enjoy playing Rambo and why?

I loved playing Rambo. The character was and is a blessing. One that I patiently prayed and  waited for after carefully analyzing and understanding my audience and market over the years of building my brand and career. I am one who fully understands the importance of “Image, Type and Essence” as part of the success drivers of an actor with regards to building & developing my brand as an actor. The Oga Rambo character totally fulfills my thirst & hunger for more.

You’re one of a handful of actors who play older (non-teenage) characters on the show, what is it like being on a young adult series?

Being on the young adult series was quite an humbling experience. One which demanded lots of patience and presented a host of self realization events. I am fully aware of the importance of playing roles that are required to keep me relevant and constantly evolving as an actor and the only secret to sustaining and maintaining relevance is allowing yourself to continuously become a beginner at every opportunity given.

When people land a role in a Netflix series, they have expectations naturally. Were your expectations met? What was it like filming this show?

My experience on the show was second to none. It was a dream through and career elevation prayers come true. First, I must give the golden flowers to the management of Inkblot productions who without a doubt fully understands and exhibits the full attributes and conditions of operating a functional world class film production company in Nigeria. Big shout out to Naz, Zulu and Damola of Inkblot and the super amazing Erika Klopper who helped make this entire process a fulfilling and enjoyable one amidst every uncontrollable circumstance and challenge that comes with the process of filming in Nigeria. My satisfaction remains at a hundred and it was a total blessing to be a part of the Far From Home.

How did you land the role of Rambo?

Well truth be told, landing the role details back to the trajectory of my career in relation to my understanding of self and focus on career goals and objectives. I was once able to show the world, an area of immense versatility with my acting capabilities which in turn became my breakout character as an actor (The critically acclaimed Jobe role I played in the 2017 Picture Perfect hit movie produced by Iroko TV) which gave me the opportunity to show the world a part of the gift and skill embedded in me as a talent.

This I must say initiated the blueprint and gave me a clear picture of my career path and direction as I continually prayed to God for the next relative opportunity.

I totally believe that the producers of Far From Home recognized this as a character asset that would add tremendous value to their production if need be for such a role in their film. And that is without saying that only world class producers think and act accordingly. More grace and knowledge to the brains at Inkblot productions.

Who is your favorite young adult character on the show and why?

Wow, that’s a hard one. I personally connected with three of the main acts which were Ishaya, Adufe, and Tomi. I can’t remember her character name as I was always fond of calling her by her real name). Nevertheless, all the young adults I worked with on set totally made it an exciting experience for me and I can’t wait to celebrate with them as a whole. I was once their age and had their kind of dreams and I pray that the almighty God blesses and guides them all through their independent careers and life. I have no doubt that they all will shine respectively.

Why should viewers watch Rambo in the series, what does he bring to the show?

Viewers should watch Rambo as I believe that its a particular role type that I personally bring to life that will entertain them in every ramification. I have worked tirelessly hard over the years to build a brand which evolves around this type of delivery and mastered a unique way of connection between the audience and myself which has given me my place in their hearts and also the industry at large. It is a remarkable act that I am blessed with which totally eliminates comparisons. An audience fav which I refer to as the picture perfect delivery loved by Nollywood and its viewers. Thank God for grace.

What is next for Bolanle Ninalowo?

Oh God! Many more blessings. It’s the beginning of the next chapter for Bolanle. I am simply a pen in the hands of God. A man with enormous grace and blessings. I am sure God will do more beautiful and amazing things that the world would celebrate. A hint; #KingOfTarmac is surely coming through. I hope to sit down with Netflix soon to discuss a possible collaboration that will bring more value to both parties symbiotically.

What stands you out in Nollywood?

I think it is just my style, diversity and my whole brand. One thing I have always wanted to be was a universal actor. I wanted to be the guy that would bridge the gap between the Yoruba and the Igbo film industries, because I believed Nollywood was one, filming was one. I don’t like the fact that people would call me a Yoruba or an Igbo actor. So, I felt like, if I could make it through the English industry, I should be able to penetrate the Yoruba industry, which is what I did and I have been able to do that, thank God for the grace. So, I think that makes me stand out. Now, coming into the industry at age 34 and succeeding, I am 40 years old now, with a wife and two children and I have been able to overcome and succeed, I think it is inspiring enough. So, there is a lot, but I think my style and my hustle just make me stand out.

What role or roles would you never take irrespective of the fee attached to it?

Of course, I will never play a nude role in a movie, like being totally nude, for what? (Laughs) I like to be challenged a lot, like the role I played in ‘Picture Perfect’, I played the role of an ‘Agbero’, a hooligan that a lot of people didn’t know I could do. So, I like to challenge myself a lot. I always like to see what the directors and producers like to do with me; I am pretty much like a vessel that you can just do anything with. I am out here to learn new things. Like I always say, I am only here to outdo myself, I am my only challenger, I am not here to compete with anyone.
