How Tayo Conga’s love for percussion made him a star

Oluwatayo Oluwadamilare Ajayi aka Tayo Conga, is a living testament to the power of rhythm as a cultural force. Born and bred in Lagos, but hails from Ikogosi Ekiti State, he has spent over a decade championing African arts, culture and tourism while using the conga drum as his voice on both local and global stages.

For Tayo, percussion is far more than entertainment, it is a philosophy of life. “Life is full of rhythm,” he reflects.

“The rising and setting of the sun, the moon, the stars, time, and seasons all move in rhythm. The drum embodies these movements.” This worldview shapes his music, allowing him to connect with people spiritually and emotionally while keeping African heritage alive.

As the lead percussionist of Tumbadora African Entertainment, Tayo has performed at renowned festivals including the African Drum Festival, International Jazz Festival, and the Forbes Under-30 Summit Africa. His rhythms have also echoed in diplomatic circles,

His contributions have gained international recognition, with 2025 marking a milestone: he and the Tumbadora African Crew received an official invitation to perform at the Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) during the Intra-African Trade Fair in Algiers, Algeria.

Tayo also creates spaces for cultural celebration within Nigeria. He convenes the Spirit of Drums concert and the Gathering of Arts and Sound showcase, platforms that elevate African percussion and creativity. Through his Tayo Conga Drum Workshop and a quarterly cultural show at the prestigious Nike Art Gallery, Lagos, he brings together art lovers, musicians, and cultural enthusiasts.

Currently serving as Chief Percussionist at Elevation Church in Lagos, Tayo continues to inspire with rhythms that uplift worship and deepen spiritual connection. His advice to aspiring percussionists is rooted in faith and resilience: believe in God, stay grounded in your roots, practice consistently, and use music not just to perform but to serve, preserve, and inspire.

Vision Film Academy debuts in Abuja

The city of Abuja recently played host to a landmark event as Vision Film Academy, founded by filmmaker Felix Bankole, was officially commissioned amidst joy and celebration. The academy, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, represents a bold step toward raising a new generation of filmmakers dedicated to excellence, professionalism, and the reflection of Christian values in the film industry.

Bankole explained that the inspiration for the institution was divine, born out of his passion for revival in Northern Nigeria and his desire to see filmmakers become ambassadors of Christ. “Our God is the source of creativity. Just look at the heavens He created or the beauty of human beings He formed. We, as creatives, are called to represent Him. This institute is a platform for that mandate,” he said.

The academy boasts a comprehensive curriculum that cuts across vital aspects of modern filmmaking. Students will be trained in cinematography, scriptwriting, storytelling, cinematic lighting, sound recording, directing, production design, drone piloting, video editing, after effects, acting, photography, and special effects makeup. With a balance of theory and practical sessions, the institution aims not just to impart skills but also to provide platforms for budding filmmakers to thrive.

At its core, Vision Film Academy is guided by three values: faith in God, creativity, and excellence. Bankole stressed that its mission goes beyond technical training. The goal is to raise “media ambassadors of the Gospel” who can use film as a powerful tool to illuminate society and spread positive values.

Reflecting on the journey of establishing the academy, Bankole who is founder, Drama Missions Outreach International     admitted it was not without challenges. He described the process as one of resilience and trust in God, noting that every obstacle became an opportunity to see God’s provision. “Challenges are what make life beautiful. They show our trust in God. With such a huge project, there were many obstacles, but God gave us victory. This project is His, and He sponsored it,” he said.

Partnerships with churches and support from Christian colleagues in Nollywood played a pivotal role in bringing the dream to reality. Bankole, who grew up in Northern Nigeria where opportunities in film were scarce, emphasized the significance of situating the academy in the region. He envisions Vision Film Academy expanding globally, producing “kingdom filmmakers” who will inspire change and contribute to an end-time revival through their craft.

“Many young boys and girls working in homes as househelps face exploitation, abuse, isolation, and loss of education opportunities. Their struggles often go unseen because domestic work happens behind closed doors, leaving them without adequate legal or community protection.”

Rita Ezenwa-Okoro added that the foundation, through ARTvocacy, is using theatre and performance as tools of social change to shine a light on these hidden realities. By creating a safe stage for young people to tell stories from their own communities, projects like ‘Bobo’ call attention to child rights, amplify silenced voices, and encourage society to recognise that househelps are first and foremost children, who deserve dignity, education, and protection.
