Content creation is my side hustle, says TikTok star Jarvis

Popular TikTok star Elizabeth Amadou, widely known by her online persona “Jarvis,” has revealed that creating content online is not her main career ambition but a side hustle.

In a recent chat with media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, the viral “AI character” said she is focused on building a successful business empire and breaking into Nollywood, Nigeria’s film industry.

Jarvis, who studied accounting, said she stumbled into content creation during a university strike and gradually found her niche through experimenting with an animated, AI-inspired character.

“I actually see this as a side hustle. I just want to be a businesswoman who is very rich and lives comfortably with my family, my husband, and children. That’s what matters,” she said.

She also expressed her dream of helping young creatives find their voice: “I literally want to have a platform for other young people to showcase their talents because it wasn’t easy for me. I had to create my own platform. Having that for others is part of my plan.”

Speaking on the challenges of her unique content niche, Jarvis said keeping audiences engaged is a constant struggle, as people lose interest quickly if there’s no innovation.

“My niche is very difficult because you don’t want to keep repeating the same thing. Humans are insatiable. If you do something repeatedly, they’ll get tired of it,” she said, noting that she had to take a short break to re-strategise with her team and develop fresh ideas.

According to her, she was inspired to introduce NPC (non-playable character) livestream content in Nigeria after seeing it gain popularity abroad. “Everybody was doing the same thing here. I saw the NPC trend overseas and thought, ‘I already have this cartoon character in me. Why not?’

Jarvis also touched on the financial side of TikTok fame, revealing that the platform doesn’t directly pay for posts. “Posting content does not actually pay. TikTok isn’t monetised that way, so it’s only on live streams we actually gain from what we do. That’s why we focus on livestreams more.”

Though her family was initially skeptical about her content creation, she said their opinion changed once her popularity soared. “They saw that what I was doing was nice. You know, African parents like it when people are hyping their children.”

Jarvis said she initially perceived Peller based on their online interactions, but after meeting him offline, she discovered his true personality and grew to love him.

The AI persona acknowledged the public’s skepticism about their relationship due to their viral “fights” and banter, but emphasised the authenticity of their interactions.

Jarvis also stressed that their online reality is genuine, and they’re not faking their relationship for content.

However, she said she’s mindful of the seriousness of marriage and the potential consequences of their online antics.

She said, “I believe that we will get married at the right time. There’s a lot in marriage, so you have to be careful. It’s true that we are engaged. He [Peller] actually engaged me; shockingly to me. But the ring doesn’t fit my finger, so I kept it safe at home.

“I had to understand that you cannot judge someone online… until I met him real life and I saw that oh he had a character offline and it literally cool and more than I thought,” she revealed, indicating a deeper connection formed away from the cameras. With time, I got to find out that he was actually into me, so I grew to love or like him.

“Peller knows how to make people keep thinking, keep talking. The thing is that our reality, we are actually real. So people take our reality as content, but we are actually real. Whatever fight, argument, play, everything, it’s real. So there is no faking there.

“Marriage is something serious and we should not joke about or joke around too and at this time we are playing too much on the internet. I don’t think people or family actually take us seriously,” she explained, suggesting a future where aspects of their relationship might be kept “out of their eyes.”

He added that the experience taught him that lost opportunities can sometimes be blessings, and when doors close, it’s essential to dust yourself off and keep moving forward.

He said: “I have learnt that sometimes, lost opportunities could be a blessing. I have so many colleagues that have gotten opportunities that I wanted, I’ve gotten opportunities that people wanted as well.

“But when I look at the trajectory of my career, some of those things that I might have gotten would have completely derailed me from where I am today. And I believe that where I am today is where I am ordained by God to be.

“I was supposed to be on Big Brother Africa some years ago, it was about five of us, we’ve done all the necessary things and they asked us to pack our bags and wait to be called to join the show. I even hired someone to manage my social media but they didn’t pick me. I think Tayo went, I’m not sure who went that year. But that was the year that I did MTV Shuga and MTV Shuga is what launched my career to who I am today.

“If I had gone on Big Brother, the hype would have gone down by now or I might not have made it in the entertainment industry. So, sometimes, when you lose opportunities, you just have to count it as a blessing, dust your feet and keep on moving. That’s one hard lesson I have learnt”.
