Imanjozzy speaks on challenges facing upcoming artistes

In a candid conversation, rising Afrobeat musician Imanjozzy has shed light on the financial and structural challenges plaguing Nigeria’s music industry—particularly for upcoming artists.

Speaking from experience, the artist emphasised that breaking into the Afrobeat scene today requires not just talent but significant capital investment and strategic access to key industry networks.

“Music has never just been about talent,” the artist began.

“In today’s Afrobeat space, you need money for quality production, videos, promotion, and even influencer collaborations. Everything costs a lot. If you’re not backed by a label, sponsor, or a financially supportive fan base, your chances are slim.”

He also pointed out the rigid gatekeeping that exists in the industry:

“There’s a cabal system in play—where connections matter more than creativity. Platforms that should spotlight raw talent are often monopolized by artists who can pay for exposure. That leaves most gifted newcomers struggling to be heard.”

The artist called for more structures to be put in place to support emerging talents, including affordable recording opportunities, transparent distribution channels, and industry showcases that focus on merit.

“Afrobeat is global now. But for us to sustain this growth, the grassroots needs support. We must make the industry more accessible to true talents regardless of background,” he concluded.

  • 2Baba, Annie didn’t manage their marriage well – Baba Fryo

2Baba, Annie didn’t manage their marriage well – Baba Fryo

Veteran musician Baba Fryo has weighed in on the collapsed marriage between music icon 2Baba and his ex-wife, Annie Idibia, attributing the breakdown to their shared entertainment lifestyle.

Speaking on the Honest Bunch podcast, Baba Fryo said the couple’s inability to manage their union was due to both being in the entertainment industry, which he believes can create conflict when not properly handled.

He explained that, traditionally, a woman is expected to be a stabilising force in a marriage, especially when her partner is involved in vices. However, he questioned how stability can be achieved when both partners exhibit similar habits.

Baba Fryo also revealed a personal connection to 2Baba’s current partner, Natasha, claiming he had known her since childhood and once carried her on his lap when she was just three years old.

“2Face and his ex-wife didn’t manage themselves well. They are both entertainers. Annie is an actress, and 2Face is a musician,” he said.

“In marriage, when the couple are out, the woman must watch the man. When the man is drinking, the woman will be watching him, and if he is drinking too much, the woman will calm him. But if you marry a woman who also drinks, when you’re both drunk, who will take the other home?

“When a man sees that, he will become insecure in the marriage. And when he goes out and sees another woman with a different attitude… I’m not saying it’s a good attitude, oh, because even 2Face’s current lover, Natasha, is someone I have known”.

  • Why most musicians don’t enjoy marriage – Baba Fryo

Why most musicians don’t enjoy marriage – Baba Fryo

Veteran afrobeats singer Baba Fryo has claimed that most musicians struggle to balance their careers and marriages due to a lack of understanding from their spouses.

In an interview on Honest Bunch podcast, Fryo said that many musicians thrive better when they’re unmarried, stating that the demands of their profession can be challenging for their partners to comprehend.

However, Baba Fryo noted that there are exceptions in musicians who have found success in both their careers and marriages.

He attributed this to having supportive spouses who understand and accept the demands of their profession.

He said: “Most musicians don’t enjoy marriage, except they are lying.

“They are not enjoying their marriages. Their spouses don’t understand their profession. Go and verify what I am saying.

“Most musicians thrive better when they are unmarried. It’s just a few of them who are still thriving after marriage maybe because their spouses already knew and accepted them for who they are.”

When it comes to his personal life, Baba Fryo claimed to have a pragmatic approach to relationships, stating that he doesn’t take women seriously due to the attention he receives because of his fame.

“I don’t take them too seriously because I know it was my fame that attracted them to me.

“I thank God that I’m able to manage women because it takes wisdom to handle women,” he said.
