Patience Jonathan, Bola Shagaya still inseparable

  • Peter Obafemi lies low

    Peter Obafemi lies low

For Peter Obafemi, owner of defunct Ritetime Airways, the transient nature of good tidings is a bitter pill to swallow. Before fate began to deal him blows, Peter Obafemi was an epitome of confidence in his ambience of opulence. He dined and wined with notables and seemed to have a long lasting contract with success.

But the fickle nature of life has enlightened the once influential socialite that time and chance change conditions that seem to be permanent. The once ubiquitous businessman has faded off the social radar. Like a distressed ship captained by a drunk sailor, his first marriage to his America-based wife sank.

Soon after, he fell head over heels in love with lovely Lolade Iruka. Before the social scene could recover from the disaster of his first union, he strutted to the altar with his new love. But a few months after they welcomed their baby boy, Obafemi’s second marriage also crumbled. And while he nursed the pains of a heartbreak, he lost the Peoples Democratic Party’s primary election in Ekiti State to Governor Ayo Fayose, causing his political career to take nose-dive before it had the chance to soar.

Obafemi seems to be currently preoccupied with figuring out ways to resuscitate his comatose political career, hence nothing has been heard of the once prominent politician for some time.

Bigwigs honour Aregbesola at daughter’s wedding

The mother is usually the better dresser on her daughter’s wedding day, but the day is usually more memorable for the father. It is the day that he and his daughter are ‘divorced’ from each other. This might be the reason why Osun State governor, Rauf Aregbesola, gave his daughter, Shakirat Argbesola, out in marriage in a quiet but classy wedding.

Like a newly enthroned empress, Shakirat glowed as she gyrated to every beat that boomed from the speakers. It was indeed a memorable day for the Aregbesolas and their in-laws as guests testified to the excitement that enveloped the atmosphere.

Among the numerous dignitaries that graced the occasion were Oyo State governor, Abiola Ajimobi; former Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Dele Alake; Senator Olorunnibe Mamora and Oviation magazine publisher, Dele Momodu.

  • Buhari’s actions are consistent with God’s will for Nigeria -Build a Nation Initiative Convener Ehiemua

Buhari’s actions are consistent with God’s will for Nigeria -Build a Nation Initiative Convener Ehiemua

He has every reason to beat his chest. Amidst widespread apprehension in the build up to the presidential election on March 28, Emmanuel Ehiemua, the Convener of Build A Nation Initiative and CEO of popular accounting firm, Oracle Nigeria Limited, insisted that the election would be very peaceful. That was at a time a good number of Nigerians were relocating their families abroad because they anticipated that the elections would be very violent. Their fears were accentuated by a prediction allegedly made by the United States of America that the country would break up in 2015.

Speaking with The Nation after the elections that saw the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan accepting his defeat from the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), the renowned accountant reiterated his earlier position that God Himself was in absolute control of the elections because He had designed Nigeria to be of immense blessing to Africa and the rest of the world.

“The elections were largely peaceful,” he recalled. “The anxiety expressed before the elections turned out to be unfounded because the elections were well planned and well carried out. It was not a perfect election, but then, we didn’t expect perfection, especially when a new technology was being used. It was by the grace of God that it turned out the way it did.

“At Build a Nation Initiative, we believe that we express the will and purpose of God, because God created Nigeria for a purpose and that purpose must be fulfilled.”

Ehiemua believes that the emergence of Jonathan as the President in the election he also contested with Buhari in 2011 was designed by God to provoke Nigerians and jolt them out of their slumber in matters concerning governance.

He said: “In the sight of God, there are no coincidences. In 2011, you had Jonathan and Buhari, and God decided to use Jonathan and he became the President. But God also gave him a mission to provoke and wake Nigerians up, and this he did admirably. By the time the election came, Nigerians had become so mobilised because they suddenly realised that they had powers that they could use. As it turned out, by the time the Nigerian people expressed their power, President Jonathan was defeated at the polls and Buhari was elected.

“The way they came out, you could see that the people were enjoying a new awareness of their importance in the governance of the country. The use of Jonathan was meant to create awareness in the minds of Nigerians. It was meant to provoke them, and that was what happened. That was why the two gentlemen contested again in 2015.

“So, Jonathan has finished his mission as ordained by God and has now passed the baton to Buhari in a seamless manner because these are all within the will of God. It is now left for Buhari to do what is called the heavy lifting. Even the way President Jonathan reacted caught everybody by surprise. It is consistent with the fact that he was acting as an agent of God. He demonstrated quite clearly that Nigeria was the winner.

Asked whether Buhari fits into his earlier description of the father figure he said Nigerians needed to pilot the nation’s affairs, he said: “My response to that is that time will tell. We cannot conclude that now. Buhari, by virtue of his age, has that natural advantage. But until we go through his administration, we cannot really tell how history is likely to judge him.

“The final credit has to go to God. Like we said in Build A Nation Initiative, God is in full control of the affairs of Nigeria. It is He that is directing everything. So, even the election, though not perfect, still reflected the will of God because the voice of the people is the voice of God.”

He charged all Nigerians of goodwill and purpose to pray for Buhari who he said has a very big task ahead.

“The pre-election promises he made to Nigerians would challenge him. His promise to fight corruption and insecurity and his promise to fix our economy are all major promises. The other thing is that Nigerians have now become aware, knowledgeable and impatient. These are terrible combinations for any leader to handle,” he noted.

He said the most urgent of the tasks ahead of the President-elect is to unite all sections of the nation. “When you look at the election, I think Buhari scored about 15 million votes while Jonathan scored about 12 million. It was a difference of two-point-something million, which means a significant population voted for Jonathan. Since he has promised to deal with issues like corruption, impunity and so on, it is expected that he will live up to his promises.

But the easiest way to cause disaffection in the country will be the perception of selective application of his campaign promises. When a party wins an election, there is always that temptation to marginalise their opponents in order to settle scores and things like that.

“Happily, the president has warned his supporters not to molest or harass the opposition. So we pray that he enforces that directive. But clearly, he is the one that is going to be involved now in executing his campaign promises.

“I would add here that Buhari is also a sleeper who has now been activated just like Jonathan was activated in 2011. So, it is victory for Nigeria and a confirmation of the love that God has for Nigeria. He has created Nigeria for a purpose and that purpose must be fulfilled.”

Reminded that Buhari had previously said that his administration would not probe anyone, contrary to what is going on now, he said: “We cannot prejudge God’s plan for Nigeria. When we say that God is in control, we say that with caution. Buhari had said he would let bygones be bygones, but he is not really the one in control but God. If God decides that He has to take certain actions He considers necessary in shaping the Nigeria He has created, nobody can alter that. So everything depends on God.

“But look at it from the human angle. Buhari said the past would be treated as the past. But, I’m sorry, this is not a matter for him to decide; it is God’s will that will be done because the election was a reflection of God’s will for Nigeria at this time. His victory is consistent with God’s will. Therefore, his subsequent actions will also be determined by God’s will.

“Nigerians have been awakened but the issue now is how this awakening is going to play out. There seems to be a vacuum at the moment. Nigerians have been awakened, but the question is to what? At Build A Nation Initiative, we believe that Nigeria was created for a purpose and that purpose must be fulfilled. Nigeria was created to be a blessing to Africa and also to the entire African people in Diaspora.

“You know the black race is at the bottom of the hill. Forget about all our millionaires. When you talk about the comity of nations, the black people are at the bottom. But we know that there is a movement in the world and God’s will is playing out in the world and a lot of changes are happening.

“From Nigeria’s election, the whole world is now aware that a new super power has been awakened. Remember that the world was still celebrating Nigeria for overcoming the outbreak of Ebola in the country. That was something that even advanced nations would find very difficult to do in similar circumstances. And the euphoria was yet to die down when we proved to the world that we are capable of conducting free, fair, credible and peaceful elections in spite of the doubts nursed by the entire world.

‘So, forget about what you see around you. You need to be able to see the happenings from a higher level. A new super power has been awakened by the conquest of Ebola and the power of the elections. We have to channel the awareness properly so that God’s vision for Nigeria will be fulfilled.

“Once we are able to get on track, there is no limit to how far we can go. I would even say that knowing the resilience and doggedness, the intellect and wisdom that Nigerians are able to express, a lot of the issues that are confronting Buhari will be resolved by Nigerians.

“Therefore, he has to be very careful and vigilant. He must not encourage too much of foreign meddlesomeness. Let the solutions come from Nigerians. Home-grown solutions are best for Nigeria. You cannot try to be cleverer than God. What information do you have that is not already available to Him?”

  • ‘My father died a very rich man’ – Tai Solarin’s daughter Corin

‘My father died a very rich man’ – Tai Solarin’s daughter Corin

The family of the late educationist and founder of the famous Mayflower School, Ikenne, Ogun State, Dr. Tai Solarin, recently marked the 21st anniversary of his passing on. His only daughter, Corin, told INNOCENT DURU how the late atheist related with the remaining members of his family. The late author and social critic, she said, died a rich man.

It is 21years since your father passed on. How has life been without him?

I have missed my father’s presence for the past 21 years. He can never be replaced. The best way to honour his memory is to follow the precepts that he gave ushard work, scrupulous honesty and not relying on others but rather being very independent.

One would expect either you or your brother to take to his ways, criticising government and wearing his trade mark khaki shirt…

It is more important to follow his ideals than dress like he did. One does not have to wear khaki before one can criticise the things that one perceives as wrong. There are many people who speak out about our society’s wrongs without needing to don khaki. For example, I see a lot that is wrong with education in Nigeria at present, and I do not hesitate in making my views known.

Could you tell us some of these things you think are wrong with our educational system?

One of them is that our government does not care about the education of the populace. This is evident in how much of the GNP is expended on education. Until our leaders realise that a highly educated and motivated workforce is the way to national prosperity, we will continue to subsist in poverty.

You appear to speak more glowingly of your dad than your mum. Why so?

Your questions thus far were about Tai Solarin. But behind every great man is a great woman. My mother was as well a great woman who worked side by side with Papa and can be said to have played a large role in his successes. She was a hard worker and a humble woman, who at the end of the day was recognised by no less a woman than Queen Elizabeth of England. She is greatly missed as well.

Your father was on different occasions thrown behind bars for criticising the government. Which of these occasions got you worried the most?

I would have to say that it was the last time in life that he was jailed for his writing. He spent 17 agonising months imprisoned in the north. He lost close to 20 kilos in weight, and every one of us feared that in his old age, he would not get out alive.

Was there any time you had to plead with him to soft pedal on his criticism of government? If yes, what was his reaction?

No. It would never have occurred to me to do so. Papa was extremely determined in his actions and views. He knew full well that his opinions could cost him his life, and he was courageous enough to face that eventuality. And Mama always supported him in his decisions, no matter how painful they were to her.

Did your father die a rich man?

My father was a very rich man. By this I mean he was very well loved, respected and admired, which are the greatest riches. Did he die with millions in the bank? No. And I would not prefer him to be in any way different from that.

I learnt he trained many people in school. How was I learnt he getting the funds to do that?

Tai Solarin had funds to train many people because he was a simple man who lived without luxury, preferring to use his money to send hundreds of people through as far as university and medical school. Any person who finished medical school, he would buy a car for them.

In one of your interviews that I have read, you described him as ‘patron saint of ogogoro sellers.’ Do you think the gesture back then was helpful, considering the number of people that have died drinking ogogoro across the country?

Tai Solarin never took a drop of alcohol in his lifetime! The reason he still became a hero among ogogoro sellers was that he believed that those who were producing alcohol locally were being penalised for their product, whereas imported alcohol from the Western world was sold freely. Experience such as the barring of alcohol, such as the one that happened in the US in the 1920’s during the period they call Prohibition, shows that it is virtually impossible to stop an alcoholic from finding alcohol even if it is banned. Tai Solarin’s only point was that Nigeria should support its local entrepreneurs.

Could you clear the air on the real reason your late father became an atheist? There are different versions of it out there.

I am not sure what versions you are referring to. Kindly specify.

Some said it was after he failed an examination he had prayed very well before doing. Others said it was after he lost his sister after praying rigorously to avert it.

The generally held notion is that in his youth, he had a crisis of faith when he lost someone that was close to him. In my opinion Tai Solarin was a much more devout man than many, based on how he lived his life.

    Are you also an atheist?

You called Tai Solarin an atheist, not me. I am a Catholic.

But did he influence you to become one?

    To become one what, please?

    To become an atheist

Tai Solarin never influenced anybody’s choice of faith. He was a very tolerant human being. If more people followed his example, we might have a more tolerant society.

Have you heard anybody saying that he would go to hell because he was an atheist? Because I read an interview where you dismissed that, saying you know where he is resting.

It was reported to me by somebody that their pastor said so in their church. That was where I heard such a report. I can’t even remember the person that said so.

Most men dread going to the houses of their girlfriends whose fathers are disciplinarians. Did you experience that as a young lady?

I cannot say that I had suitors while I was living with my parents. I was one of the youngest in my set. There was nothing like suitors.

It is obvious you love and respect your late father. What attitudes of his did you dislike?

It is difficult to recall anything about the late Tai Solarin that I disliked. He was fair in his treatment of people. He was generous and kind hearted.

Most children of famous people are usually regular faces in social circles. Yours does not seem to be so…

I am not in many social circles because I am very often working and do not have the time.

How then do you relax and what are your beauty routines: clothing, making up and so on?

I relax by reading and travelling. With regards to health and beauty, I believe that everything should be done in moderation.
