  • Olori Ladun Sijuwade steps out

    Olori Ladun Sijuwade steps out

Like the stop-start nature of rain in the month of March, fame comes and goes whenever it wants, but it is not forgotten. That is the situation with Olori Ladun Sijuwade, the widow of the late Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade. She was a permanent fixture on the social scene while her husband held sway as the Ooni. While her husband reigned as the monarch of Ife kingdom, she held sway as queen over the realm of style and ruled the celebrity scene with her great fashion sense.

But all that has changed since the late Ooni joined his ancestors. Olori Ladun recoiled into her shell to mourn the loss of the man that meant everything to her. Her place at social gatherings has literally been taken over by up-and-coming socialites.

The beautiful woman, who remains a paragon of style in spite of her advanced years, seems to have finally come to terms with her husband’s demise or perhaps she just misses the social scene where she used to be the centre of attention. Whatever the case, she seems to be making a comeback as she was spotted at the 65th birthday shindig held for Senator Daisy Danjuma.

Oloye ‘Lekan Alabi’s son weds in London

If it is true that whatever a man can do a woman can do even better, then there is no reason why a son cannot also one-up his father. The Agba Akin Olubadan of Ibadanland Oloye ‘Lekan Alabi certainly does not mind that his son, Olayemi, is preparing to follow in his footsteps tying the nuptial knot at St. John’s Anglican Church, Hampstead, London. It is the same city and church where Olayemi’s father and mother got married many years ago.

Olayemi is set to tie the knot with the love of his life, Adesola Adetoyosi, on Friday August 25 after an engagement ceremony on August 20, also in London. While the groom is a lawyer, the bride has a master’s degree in Pharmacy and hails from the prestigious Adefioye Royal Family of Ile-Ife in Osun State.

The Cultural Ambassador of the National Museum Ile-Ife, Oloye Alabi, is leaving no stone unturned to make the wedding a memorable one for his beloved son. Arrangements are already in place to fly out dozens of guests to the United Kingdom on a chartered flight or two.

  • Lucky Igbinedion becomes grandfather

Former Governor of Edo State, Chief Lucky Igbinedion, is over the moon at the moment. The source of his ecstasy is none other than one of his daughters, Ehi Igbinedion, who was recently delivered of a set of cute twin girls.

The elation felt by Ehi and her handsome beau, Femi Oni, is almost rivalled by the joy pouring out from the former governor. He has been on a high since hearing the good news.

Ehi and Femi got married at a high octane ceremony three years ago. Unlike other celebrity couples whose marriages crumble like a house of cards after a few months, theirs has been waxing stronger and stronger.

The birth of their twin daughters is just one more sign that the medical doctor couple who already had a daughter are made for each other. As the grandfather of the girls beautifully named Oluwaseun Gabriella and Oluwasegun Bernice, Chief Igbinedion is already spoiling them with lots of love, offering the kinds of gifts only a rich grandfather can provide.

  • Otedola, Alakija dazzle at Daisy Danjuma’s party

We tend to think of the high and mighty as people whose main, if not only, obsession is with acquiring all the money and power they can. While this may be true, we also tend to forget that they are the ones who throw the brightest, grandest and most expensive parties.

But beyond splashing money around as if it would go out of fashion, they are also human beings like the rest of us who sometimes want to have a good time. That much was evident at the 65th birthday soiree in honour of General T.Y. Danjuma’s wife, Senator Daisy Danjuma. The high octane party left many mouths agape in wonder of the luxury on display from the food and the wine to the music and even the people in attendance.

But besides the fanfare was the display put up by billionaire oil baron Femi Otedola and Africa’s richest woman Folorunsho Alakija. The duo almost brought the roof down with their dancing steps as they engaged each other in an unofficial dancing contest.

One of the country’s nouveau riche ladies with big wallets and even bigger social reputation, she celebrated her 55th birthday over the weekend at her sprawling Banana Island, Lagos home.

On hand to celebrate with the widow of the late Deji Omotade, a former permanent secretary in the Federal Ministry of Industries and Federal Capital Territory, were none other than her kinsman and former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, and the publisher of Ovation Magazine Chief Dele Momodu.

Pillars of high society honour Erelu Abiola Dosunmu at 70

Erelu Abiola Dosunmu is an ageless colossus that has bestridden the Lagos social scene for decades. Like a self-regenerating cell, she bounces back after any setback and has remained unshakeable on her traditional and social thrones.

A few days ago, the ever-youthful matriarch of high society hosted the movers and shakers of the political, social and business circles to her 70th birthday. The celebration began with a mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Victoria Island, swiftly followed by a night of songs of praise and thanksgiving at Terra Kulture Arena, also on the Island.

The grand celebration witnessed a potpourri of joy, gaiety and camaraderie as the woman who loves wearing white was enveloped in the atmosphere generated by family, friends and associates who twisted and swayed to the beats from the loud speakers while toasting the Erelu Kuti of Lagos on her arrival into the septuagenarian club.

  • Bigwigs mourn with Sule Lamido

    Bigwigs mourn with Sule Lamido

Few things can lay bare the vanity of human wishes as effectively as death. The grim reaper cuts off vibrant, thriving branches from the roots of life with nary a thought for age or status. Wealth or the feelings of relatives makes no difference. Such is the experience of former minister of foreign affairs, Alhaji Sule Lamido and his household with the untimely death of his beloved daughter, Hadiza.

No doubt, the former governor of Jigawa State must have taken several looks at his immense possessions since the beautiful mother of three kids departed a few days ago and wish that he could exchange some or all of them for her life.

The late Hadiza was only 38 when death came calling in faraway India on the back of a brief illness. Even as the family of the rumoured 2019 presidential hopeful tries to come to terms with her departure, preparations are in top gear to give her a befitting burial.

  • Princess Oladunni Odu bounces back

Like the prodigal son retracing his steps back home after years of sojourn in an unknown land, Princess Oladunni Odu has returned to her rightful place on the social scene. The one-time chairperson of the Ondo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) had gone off the social radar after her principal, the late Olusegun Agagu, was swept out of office by the storm that heralded the ascension of the immediate past governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko.

During her heyday as an Agagu loyalist, Oladunni bestrode the social scene like a colossus. As one of the few who had the governor’s ears, she became the deity through whom access to the governor was secured. But all that was before the Hurricane Mimiko swept her and her acolytes way from the stage.

But like a balloon refilled with air after it was deflated, she has now bounced back on the social scene. She was recently named as one of the new special assistants to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu. With a high-profile job once again in her kitty, Princess Oladunni is getting ready to take the Ondo social scene by storm once again.

  • Ohakim in quiet celebration at 60

Ohakim in quiet celebration at 60

When it comes to landmark anniversaries among the political and social elite, a few things are expected: a lot of noise, elaborate red carpets, swanky and expensive shindigs and lots of merriment. For former governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, however, that was not the case as he celebrated his 60th birthday.  He opted for a low-key celebration.

When the news filtered in that the winsome husband of Chioma Ohakim planned to restrict the celebration to a simple thanksgiving service at St. James’ Anglican Church, Asokoro Abuja, to be followed by a dinner with his circle of family members and close friends, not a few heads dropped in disappointment.

The chief executive of Imo State between 2007 and 2011 has been very much out of the spotlight since he relinquished power. He is known to prefer spending time with his family and would rather engage in marathon prayer sessions than attend fancy parties.
