Why I left Fela’s band, by Femi Kuti

Femi Kuti, acclaimed musician and eldest son of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has opened up on the reasons he chose to leave his father’s band and pursue his own career.

Speaking in a recent interview, Femi disclosed that his decision was driven by the need to escape the overwhelming pressure of living under his father’s towering legacy and to create an identity independent of Fela’s shadow.

He recalled how, growing up, he was constantly compared to Fela, a situation he described as suffocating.

He said that from wearing similar outfits to being nicknamed “mini Fela,” the expectations weighed heavily on him and left little room for self-expression.

“Being under my father’s shadow was limiting my life in many ways — from my personal relationships to my career choices,” Femi explained.

Determined to chart his own course, he broke away to form his band. However, the move came with significant challenges.

According to him, many of Fela’s loyal fans turned against him, while the press was critical, making it difficult for him to receive positive reviews in the early years of his career.

Despite the resistance, Femi said he went on to establish himself as a distinctive artist in his own right, blending Afrobeat’s traditional African rhythms with modern sounds and global influences.

Kuti said, “Growing up in school, everybody would be like ‘aren’t you going to be like your dad or won’t you play music? I was pressured to be like my father.

“If I wanted to play music, I had to be Femi Kuti. I used the same mathematical thought that I cannot be Fela. I began to wear the same outfits with my father because I used to stay with my mother before I ran away to stay with him.

“I was like mini Fela because he usually dresses me like himself. I just thought I should better look for myself fast, or I’m going to be a very unhappy man. So I went back to my mother.

“The moment I formed my band, his fan base descended on me. It was very difficult to find a good write up about me then because the press hated me and at this time, there was no internet for me to defend myself.

“Being under my father, I didn’t have any possibility of my own life, including having children. I saw my life in his life”.

  • Why I supported Tinubu in 2023 elections – Morayo Afolabi-Brown

Why I supported Tinubu in 2023 elections – Morayo Afolabi-Brown

Former Managing Director of TVC Entertainment, Morayo Afolabi-Brown has revealed why she supported President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 elections.

Speaking in an interview with Chude Jideonwo, she said her decision was driven by a combination of gratitude and calculated opportunity.

Afolabi-Brown cited her family’s long-standing relationship with Tinubu as a key factor in her choice.

She recounted how Tinubu had shown support for her family during difficult times, particularly when her father, a human rights activist and former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) fell ill.

Tinubu, who was then governor of Lagos, helped with medical bills and stood by her mother.

Afolabi-Brown said, “So then, yes, and because we have a history.

“My father was president of the Nigerian Bar Association and he was a human rights activist. When he was very ill, the Governor at the time, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, stood by my mother. I mean, he cared for my dad.

“He helped with medical bills. And then the things were really tough for the family. And he was there for us.

“And then my brother came back home. He helped me, held my brother’s hand in politics. He was somebody that stood with us.

“It wasn’t through him I got my job at TVC. It had nothing to do with Asiwaju. It was a fact. I didn’t get my job through him. And I went there purely on merit.”

She said the gesture of kindness left a lasting impression on her and influenced her decision to back Tinubu in the elections.

Afolabi-Brown also emphasised that her involvement in the campaign was a calculated move, allowing her to gain valuable experience and build her professional network.

Afolabi-Brown said: “I got a letter from the women’s arm of the campaign saying that I’ve been selected to work.

“Now, I had two choices. Say no or support him, because I actually did support him. Because I believed in his candidacy.

“So it was my job. And it was my own personal decision. So I said, you know what, I’m going to support him openly. And that’s when I accepted.

She also drew inspiration from Oprah Winfrey’s endorsement of Barack Obama, deciding to openly support Tinubu despite initial skepticism.

“I mean, I always remember when Oprah held up Obama’s hand when he was running for office. And I had to go back and check morale.

“Are you sure it’s something you want to go public about, that you’re supporting this guy? And yes, I was skeptical, no doubt about that. But there’s nothing wrong with me having a personal view.

“So I said, you know what, I’m going to support him openly. And that’s when I accepted. And again, it’s not every day you get an opportunity to work on a campaign. I mean, I was working closely with the media team. And I thought it was a good opportunity. So yeah, I took the job. And it was really worth it.”

  • How Gen Z Nigerians redefine marriage as choice, not obligation

How Gen Z Nigerians redefine marriage as choice, not obligation

The traditional view of marriage in Nigeria is undergoing a major shift, particularly among members of Generation Z.

Unlike their parents’ generation, which regarded marriage as a compulsory milestone, many Gen Z Nigerians see it as an option rather than an obligation.

This generational change is driven by evolving priorities.

Young Nigerians are increasingly placing personal growth, financial stability, and career advancement ahead of settling down.

For them, relationships are being reshaped by globalisation, technology, economic realities, and a growing demand for authenticity.

As a result, practices such as cohabitation, digital dating, and situationships are gaining ground, while traditional gender roles are being openly challenged.

Some young Nigerians are also exploring alternative commitments, including long-term partnerships without marriage or even polyamorous arrangements.

However, despite these changing attitudes, Gen Z Nigerians still face considerable pressure from parents, religious institutions, and extended families to marry in line with long-standing traditions.

Economic challenges — particularly the rising cost of living and job uncertainty — also weigh heavily on their decisions.

Ultimately, it is clear that Gen Z is charting a new path. By prioritising individuality, freedom, and authenticity, they are redefining love and commitment in Nigeria, shaping the future of relationships for generations to come.

  • Uriel Oputa slams clout chasers for exploiting Phyna’s family tragedy

Uriel Oputa slams clout chasers for exploiting Phyna’s family tragedy

Reality TV star Uriel Oputa has expressed outrage over Nigerians exploiting the death of Ruth Otabor, sister of fellow BBNaija winner Phyna, for online content and clout.

She condemned the trend on Instagram, attributing it to a lack of creativity among content creators who prioritise trending topics over originality.

According to Uriel, many are willing to disrespect others’ privacy and exploit their pain for personal gains.

She urged Nigerians to respect Phyna’s privacy during this difficult time and allow her to mourn her sister in peace.

Uriel also vowed to publicly call out anyone exploiting Phyna’s situation for clout, stresing that Phyna has legal support and doesn’t need public interference.

According to Uriel, this behavior is not only insensitive but also reflects a deeper issue within the Nigerian content creation space.

She described the actions of these individuals as “disgraceful” and “absolute circus”.

She wrote: “Nigerians really don’t know when to stop. This is why I always say that most Nigerian content creators, or Nigerians in general, lack creativity. That’s why there are a billion people doing the same thing, creating the same type of content, because nobody wants to think differently or innovate. Small-mindedness is everywhere.

“To make matters worse, some people use someone else’s pain as content. Let me be clear: if I see anyone using Phyna’s sister or Phyna’s name to chase clout or create content, I will call you out publicly without shame. I will post it, and I will stand by it.

“Let her mourn her sister in peace. Let her handle whatever she needs to handle privately with her family and the company. Not everything is a joke until it happens to you.

“This behaviour is disgraceful. Absolutely disgraceful. Leave her alone. She has lawyers. Somebody’s life is not Nollywood. You people deserve Nigeria. You deserve Nigeria so badly. Absolute circus. Clowns.

“Stop Blaming People ….Leave her alone let her mourn in peace. She has lawyers. Somebody’s life is not NOLLYWOOD. I no call names oo if u take this as a direct hit then. Guilty as charged”.
