    Standing before kings

    President, Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) Dr Rotimi Oladele and his Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE) counterpart and Managing Director, The Sun, Mr Femi Adesina, have been hosted to a grand reception by the Lagos State Chapter of the NIPR. AMIDU ARIJE writes.

    It was a special Thursday at the White House Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos venue of the event.

    The ambience was friendly and guests felt good in their eye-catching attires. Many were in suits with ties to match; others were in gorgeous native wears, complemented with shoes.

    Welcome to the grand reception for President of the Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE), Mr Femi Adesina and President, Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) Dr Rotimi Oladele, a former Managing Director of the Nigerian Tribune.

    At the gate of the hotel were heavily-armed police personnel.

    The pedigree of the celebrators – Adesina and Oladele, – spoke volumes about the quality of their guests.

    An Armed Forces Band welcomed all into the venue with songs and heavy percussion spiced with trumpet and other musical instruments. The group was a delight to watch.

    As guests settled down inside the well decorated hall, the national anthem was rendered to start the reception. It did not lack the band’s melodious input.

    Anchoring the event was the immediate past chairman of the Lagos State Chapter of the NIPR, Jide Ologun, who introduced dignitaries.

    The Chapter’s Chairman, Joseph Okonmah, described the honorees as the shakers and movers of their various organisations.

    “I am firmly convinced that these gentlemen we honour today have all it takes to move their organisations to new heights,” he said.

    An elated Oladele, also the workaholic Chief Executive Officer of Megavons West Africa Limited, looked resplendent in his suit. He was all-smiles. Like Adesina, he was the cynosure of all eyes as he humbly acknowledged cheers from guests.

    His counterpart, Adesina was no less elated; so was his delectable wife.

    Their sterling virtues – especially of exemplary diligence – were acknowledged by all, especially in their goodwill messages.They were both described as hard working and diligent.

    The Senior Special Adviser to the President on Public Affairs, Dr Olusanya Awosanya, said both have one thing in common: courage.

    Chief Alex Akinyele, a former President of the NIPR, thanked God for the feat the association had achieved. He described the honourees as fantastic and credible.

    “He (Oladele) should try to put in his best to continue to have fantastic credentials. I want to tell Mr Adesina to continue in his humility. I salute your hard work; above all, I salute your humility and diligence,” he said.

    Responding to the goodwill messages, both Oladele and Adesina assured them of their continued commitment to the development of the organisation.

    Adesina described the reception as encouraging, noting that Akinyele’s presence was a pleasant surprise to him. Then, he added: “I want to promise that we will give you the support you need. I am quite delighted and overwhelmed for this reception.”

    Commenting on the responsibility of NIPR, Adesina said it is responsible to the private sector and the public sector, adding that for a positive projection of the country’s image, it needs to do more.

    “For a change, I think Nigeria should begin to emphasise the good aspects of the country and the citizenry. This is a big duty of the NIPR; I think there should be a synergy between the government and the NIPR so that Nigeria can be properly marketed in terms of reputation, both within and outside the country,” he said.

    He tasked the government to do the proper thing to better the life of the citizenry. Saying the newspaper does not create bad news, he said the onus is on the newspaper to reflect what is happening in the society

    “I will not blame the media that reflects the society. I will rather say that the society, the government should do the proper thing and the media will have nothing but developmental journalism,’’ he said.

    Oladele, while acknowledging that no one would be ‘Mr do all,’ he said he would focus on the restructuring the association and build a very robust internally generated revenue.

    “I will focus essentially on restructuring the governance and administration of the body among other duties, building a very robust system of internally generated revenue and membership credibility,” he said.

    Oladele said professionalism was needed at the centre to move the NIPR forward, explaining: “Expertise and experience will bring professionalism. Also, there will be a lot of driving the regulation; the complaint system will equally be enhanced.’’

    Bound by love

    A Ghana-based businessman Henry Okechukwu Ichetaonye and his lovebird former Miss Boma Celestina Okoro, who works at Unity Bank of Nigeria Plc in Lagos, got married in Owerri, the Imo State capital. OKODILI NDIDI reports

    It was a day for love. It was dream come true for two lovebirds. The dream of spending a life time together for charming Mr Henry Okechukwu Ichetaonye and his damsel, Miss Boma Celestina Okoro, finally came to pass as they were joined in holy matrimony at the Asumpta Cathedral in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

    The groom is a Ghana-based businessman, who buys electronics from China and sells in Ghana while the bride is a staff member of Unity Bank of Nigeria Plc in Lagos.

    The story of the pair, who began the journey to the aisle one year ago, can best be described as the triumph of love. It was a day that love conquered.

    On that day, nine other couples were also joined, thus turning the event into something a little less than a ‘mass wedding’. But standing out of the impressive and colourful crowd of lovers was the pair of Celestina and Henry, who was aptly described as perfect.

    The presiding priest, Revd Father Austin Opara, charged the couples to continue in love and tolerance, describing marriage as a mysterious and holy union initiated by God to sustain mankind.

    He enjoined men to love and appreciate their wives just as Christ loved the church, urging the women to be obedient and submissive to their husbands.

    But for couple, their union was actually built around the two key words of the admonition, which was love and tolerance; this was much confirmed by their parents who said they agreed they were made for each other.

    The mother of the bride, Mrs. Rebecca Okoro, described the day as her happiest.

    “For me to witness the wedding of my daughter is the happiest and one of the greatest things to happen in my life. My prayer is that God should bless them with the best things of life. I also want to advise them to continue to love and show respect for each other. It is, indeed, a perfect union,” she said.

    Mother of the groom, Mrs Liza Ichetaonye, said it was the best thing to ever happen to her. She described the bride as the best companion for her son.

    “I am happy that my son made the right choice. I know they will both be happy. My prayer is that God will bless them abundantly and keep them in good health,” she said.

    The joy of the bride knew no bounds as she recounted her experience of love with her spouse. Dressed in a radiant white over-flowing gown with a bouquet of flower in hands, Boma said: “I am very lucky to have Henry as my husband. He is everything a woman needs in a man. I feel happy having him as a husband. He is one man in a million. And the most beautiful thing about Henry is that there is no dull moment with him. He is intelligent and different from every other man. I would love to have him as my husband 10 times over.”

    The visibly elated groom, who wore a sparkling suit, said: ”Today is one of the best days of my life. I have dreamt of this day. It is just beyond explanation and I just thank God. My woman is a woman of peace. She is an exciting person to be with and she is simply perfect.”

    Prayers have been held for the late Alhaja Sidikat Alamutu at her family house in Iju-Ishaga, a Lagos suburb, reports NNEKA NWANERI.\

    For the family of the late Sidikat Alamutu, it was praise and thanksgiving time last week for a life well spent.

    Mrs Alamatu died on January 13. She was 91.

    Last Wednesday, a three-day Fidau was held for her in her Iju-Ishaga home. Prayers were offered to the Almighty for the repose of her soul.

    Until her death, she was a caterer and the head of Alasalat, an Islamic women group in Ebute-Meta, Lagos Mainland. She had six children, many grand children, and great-grand children.

    The compound brimmed with activities. The women dressed in line with Islamic injunctions; the men wore long flowing white gowns.

    Chief Imam Ismail Alli of Aduramigba Mosque, Mosope at Iju-Ishaga led the prayers. While praying for the deceased, he urged the family members to be faithful and have the fear of God, adding that a day shall come when all men shall go to where the late Alhaja Alamutu has gone.

    Imam Alli described the deceased as a liberal person who never kept malice and one whose presence was always felt at every gathering.

    Though the 95-year-old widower of the late Alhaja Alamutu is still alive, he was not present at the prayer session.

    One of the sons of the deceased and a retired Naval Officer, Alhaji Muslim Alamutu had many good words to describe to his late mother, who he described as a mother in a million with a heart of gold.

    The late mama’s grand-daughter, Saidat Alamutu when called upon to speak of her mama, described her as a disciplinarian, a loving and caring mother who she and her other relatives will miss her a lot for her cleanliness.

    ‘’She was very neat. I can’t pinpoint what exactly I can say I will miss about her. I will miss a lot of things about her because she was, indeed, a woman of many parts with a lot of attributes. She really lived a much-fulfilled life.”

    One of the easily identifiable traits of wise people is their ability to improve on their knowledge. They realise that no one knows it all. There are always people who are more experienced than us and knowledge is progressive. Whatever information we have today may be obsolete by tomorrow because the only constant thing in life is change. Whoever closes his/her mind to new information is heading for a life of isolation. Hence, we have constantly emphasized the need to keep learning in this column. In agreement with this commitment, it is my pleasure to bring you another Public Speaking Icon today. I admire him because he is multi-talented. His leadership style is also worthy of emulation, and he has great people skills. Hey, why should I tell you all about him when you can meet him yourself? For your reading pleasure and enlightenment, I bring you Mr. Alfred Olomukoro.

    Alfred Olomukoro

    Alfred Olomukoro is a theatre art practitioner and a comedian. He owns a training academy known as Ekwebility Professional Academy, where he is the principal facilitator. “Ekwe” in Delta means laughter, so the academy focuses on developing the ability to make people laugh in its students. The Academy has had the privilege of consulting for the United Nations. Alfred is also an actor, a director, and a professionally trained compère. He also recently authored a book titled, Scores to Settle, a collection of short stories. I leave you with Fred Olomukoro.

    Factors responsible for interest in comedy

    While in primary school, I always loved to tell stories in class. I even narrated movies to my classmates. Gradually, they got so used to it that during any free period, they would gather around me and expect me to tell them the latest movie- most of them were boarders, while I was a day student. But unknown to them, there were days I didn’t have a story to tell; so I would create some make believe stories on impulse. A title would evolve right there and then, and I would tell them the story, which they always believed. They were always quite captivated by the stories. I was gradually building myself in speaking without knowing. Comedy came into the scene because, in the cause of telling those stories, I added my own humour, my own flavor and I saw them laugh- I love to see people laugh. Also, my sisters enjoyed me reading a book or watching a movie instead of them doing it; they would wait for me to tell them the story. They believed my own version was more interesting than the original. All these developed my creativity in terms of humour and speaking. I seize every opportunity of an event to make a presentation, such a reciting a poem. That was how I got used to facing a crowd.

    First time before a crowd

    My first time before a crowd was in my primary school days. I participated in a drama presentation, and I did quite well. I wasn’t too shaken by the crowd. I had already rehearsed in the class, so I was not a victim of pressure or stage fright. In secondary school, I continued like that. Though a little fear would naturally come, but as long as I am prepared, I will overcome it.

    Difference between facing a crowd as a master of event (compère) and as a comedian

    There is a big difference. In the Nigerian context, most people simply assume that if you are a comedian, you must also be a compère, but it doesn’t really work like that. This has robbed a lot of compères their jobs because people expected that they must make people laugh. You can be a compère, but you may not be a comedian. A comedian’s basic job is to make people laugh. Nevertheless, a comedian should train as a compère to learn how to observe protocols appropriately. As a comedian, your humour must apply to your audience. It has to impart the people because humour speaks volume. They will laugh, but there should be a message. Your major goal is to hear the outburst of laughter. So, you must put in the required humour ingredients that will stir up people to laugh. A speaker needs to have a very good opening; it could be via humour, or statistics on the subject matter, or stories, people love stories. Also, as a comedian, your first joke is your major joker. If you give a fantastic first joke, even if the next one is not as interesting as the first, the initial one will linger in their minds, so they will still laugh. It is also good that you leave them with the humour that will cause them to ask for more, so that you can leave the stage when the ovation is loudest. These are some of the things we teach at Ekwebility Academy.

    How easy is it to be funny?

    A lot of people think comedy is easy or cheap, but it is not. It is not easy to be funny. Comedians do say this and it is true; I have been on stage as a comedian, and I am also a trainer, so I’ve seen both sides of it. Nigerians are passing through economic depression, so sometimes when they come to events like that, you don’t know what’s running through their minds. And you want to make such people laugh? They may have been through a terrible traffic, or be experiencing delayed salaries, or victimization at the office, and they want a comic relieve at the event. As a comedian, it is your task to make them laugh. You must have that natural ability in you- there is something in you that makes you original and funny.     Sultan of Sokoto and President-General, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar and President, Dangote Group of Companies Alhaji Aliko Dangote led three other bigwigs to receive Merit Award from an Islamic group, Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation (ZSF) in Lagos.     •Group honours Sultan, Dangote, others

    None of them, except the family of the late Secretary-General of Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Abdullateef Adegbite had a hint about the award. The letters sent to them merely invited them to Lagos for a ceremony by the Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation (ZSF), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), working for the revival of Zakat, one of the five pillars of Islam. Zakat is the payment of a certain percentage of income at the end of each year to promote Islamic courses.

    On January 11, the foundation honoured Sultan of Sokoto and President-General, NSCIA, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar; former Kano State Governor Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau; President, Dangote Group of Companies Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Chairman, Jaiz Bank Plc Alhaji Umaru Abdul Mutallab. The late Adegbite got a post-humous award.

    Sultan Abubakar was honoured for his efforts to unite Muslims in the country; ensuring peaceful co-existence with faiths and persistent calls for institutionalisation of Zakat.

    Mallam Shekarau’s presence at the foundation’s function in Lagos then as Kano State governor and assistance with huge funds to build the Zakat House earned him the award.

    Aside paying Zakat, Alhaji Abdul Mutallab signed the foundation’s letter to wealthy Muslims to channel their Zakat through the foundation, which yielded positive responses. He facilitated the meeting between ZSF and former Finance Minister when Islamic Development Bank (IDB) demanded a correspondence from the ministry before sponsoring Zakat training programme in Lagos.

    Alhaji Dangote supported the foundation in a big way while the late Adegbite was said to be exemplary in all ways. Shortly before his death, he talked to people on behalf of the foundation to people to pay their Zakat.

    The Ninth Zakat Distribution Ceremony was held at the New Great Hall of the College Of Medicine, University Of Lagos, Idi-Araba, Mushin, Lagos.

    It began with the historic opening of the Baytul Zakat (Zakat House) by Sultan Abubakar at Olajide Street near the popular Babalola Bus Stop in Ilasamaja in Mushin.

    He cut the tape assisted by the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari; Alhaji Abdul Mutallab; Chief Imam of Lagos Alhaji Garuba Akinola Ibrahim; Baba Adinni of Lagos Sheikh AbdulHafeez Abou; ZSF Chairman, Prince Sulayman Olagunju and its Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer Imam Abdullahi Shuaib.

    Sultan Abubakar also unveiled the plaque before leading the guests to LUTH for the main ceremony.

    On learning that Sultan Abubakar and the Emir of Ilorin were around, the residents trooped out to catch a glimpse of them.

    Others lined up from Ishaga Close Bus Stop to LUTH gate as a mark of honour for the Sultan.

    Shortly after the ceremony started with opening prayer by the Chief Imam of Lagos, Sheikh Garuba Ibrahim, a large entourage of Hausa community led by the Serikin Hausawa of Lagos and that of Idi-Araba stormed the hall. Muslim clerics in Mushin led by the Chief Imam of Mushinland and President, Council of Ulamau and Mushin Muslim Community, Sheikh Sulaimon Olanijo were also in attendance.

    Alhaji Abdul Mutallab described the day as special”in our history with the official opening of our Zakat House whose construction began in 2009 during Dr Adegbite’s reign”.

    Alhaji Mutallab, who chaired the occasion, singled out Mallam Shekarau for his “handsome” donation towards the project.

    He appealed to wealthy Muslims to pay their Zakat as at when due and also channel their Sadaqah (charity) to ZSF for an efficient and effective disbursement to the poor and the needy.

    There were lectures by the National Missioner of Al-Fatiu Quareeb Society of Nigeria Sheikh Sulaiman Adangba and Executive Secretary, Muslim Ummah of Southwest Nigeria (MUSWEN) Prof Daud Noibi.

    Shuaib thanked the Sultan for his fatherly support over the years.

    “His concern, thoughtfulness and advice have always been inspiring and motivating. We appreciate your selfless service and servant-leadership style you have adopted since your assumption of office as the seventh Sultan,” Imam Shuaib said.

    He also acknowledged the support of the late Dr Adegbite, who he said had passion for Zakat collection and distribution during his life time.

    “We shall always be grateful to him for his candour and erudition. May Allah grant him peace of the grave and easy entry into Paradise,” he said.

    Imam Shuaib described the awardees as “five outstanding Nigerians,” whose contributions and services to humanity are appreciable.

    “Our appreciation equally goes to all our invited guests, starting with Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, (SAN); Dr Muiz Banire, the Interim National Legal Adviser to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Olatunde Babatunde Adepitan, the Chairman of Mushin Local Government Area, the president and members of the CMUL/LUTH Muslim community,” he said.

    There were goodwill messages from NSCIA Secretary-General Prof Ishaq Oloyede; Adepitan, Emir of Ilorin, United Kingdom-based Imam Dr Khalid Yasir, Political Officer in the United States Consulate in Nigeria Kathrina Drayton and Dr Halimat Alimi of An Nour Eye Centre.

    An elated Sultan Abubakar enjoined Nigerians to pray fervently for the country.

    “We need prayers for our leaders to lead us right; we need good leadership in this country that can take us to the promise land,” he said.

    He called on those in government to complement the foundation’s effort to reduce poverty in the society. ‘’People should be encouraged to pay Zakat,’’ he said, adding that the body will speak with the government to institutionalise Zakat and pass it into law.

    Alhaji Sulu-Gambari praised the foundation for reviving the third pillar of Islam – Zakat.

    He corroborated Sultan Abubakar’s call for prayer.

    Prayers, he said, would go a long way to stem the rot in the society.

    Alhaji Akinola described prayers as tools to drive away evil.

    There were symbolic distribution of cheques and materials worth N90 million before the presentation of the awards.

    Guests stretched their necks to watch as big plaques were presented to the awardees while Sultan Abubakar got a giant frame, customised in his name.

    Prince Olagunju thanked the guests for coming, while the Grand Mufti, Sharia Panel of the foundation, Sheikh Dhikrullahi Shafi’I said the closing prayer.

  • Governors, others bid Ogunro bye

    The remains of former Chief Executive Officer of Eminent Communications, Mr Sesan Ogunro, who was killed by armed robbers last December 23, have been buried in Lagos. NNEKA NWANERI writes.

    Grief-stricken Mrs Modupe Ogunro walked in, held by her son. Clad in black, her eyes were red from weeping.

    She was following a white casket bearing the remains of her husband, Mr Sesan Ogunro, to the open ground on D Close, Hill View Estate in Ogudu GRA in Lagos. People came from far and wide to pay the late Ogunro their last respects.

    His rites of passage began last Thursday with a farewell service by members of the Advertising Agencies Association of Nigeria (AAAN). The same day a service of songs was held in Ogudu GRA, where testimonies of his life were shared by his friends, family members and associates.

    Guests were in black and white attire. It was a sober moment as the guests sang in low tone in praise of the Almighty for the life of a man, who touched lives. A gigantic portrait of the late Ogunro was conspicuously displayed at the venue of the service. Around it were fresh white flowers. Dozens of burning candles were also placed on the stage.

    The service was organised by the International Church of Christ (ICOC) where the late Ogunro worshipped until he died. Yoruba actor Yemi Shodimu anchored the service.

    When the casket was brought in, a cloth with the inscription and logo of Christ’s School Ado-Ekiti, was placed on it. After the opening prayer, the late Ogunro’s daughter, Mrs Damilola Gbadebo, took the first Bible reading from 1Corinthians 12:23.

    Pastor Chris Ogbonna delivered the sermon. Describing the late Ogunro as a man with a smile for everyone, he said God does things to show that He is in charge and to make mortals number their days.

    Funeral services, he said, were meant for the living to reflect on their lives as vessels to be used, filled and emptied by the Craftsman.

    “His use of words interplay was superb. He used words aptly, words you will not easily forget. He was never in a hurry to talk and when he did, everyone stayed silent. He was a Manchester United fan and a great sportsman with a calm disposition,” the cleric said of the deceased.

    Old students of Christ’s School Ado- Ekiti, sang their school anthem: “Christ is our Cornerstone”, in honour of a fallen member. They were led to the funeral by Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi.

    A solo rendition was done by Mr Richard Efunbote titled: “The Trumpet Shall Sound”, after which the ICOC choir led sympathisers to sing the Halleluiah Chorus.

    The remains of the late Ogunro were interred in a private ceremony attended by only his family members.

    The reception followed at the Haven Events Centre in Ikeja. The Shuga Band entertained guests. Some were able to recall some songs in the 60’s which the late Ogunro loved. One of those songs is Omo pupa, sang by Highlife maestro Victor Olaiya

  • ‘My wife, my soulmate’

    Mrs Omowunmi Akande, wife of Interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chief Bisi Akande, has joined the septuagenarian club. A 70th birthday party was held for her at her Ila Orangun, Osun State countryhome last Saturday. OLATUNDE ODEBIYI was there.

    It was a gathering of people from different spheres of life.

    The low and mighty; the rich and the poor; the young and old; political and legal giants and business magnate – all stood to be counted at the event. The Ila Orangun Osun State countryhome of Interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chief Bisi Akande brimmed last Saturday with people who came for the 70th birthday party of his beloved wife, Omowunmi.

    The birthday ‘girl’ was the cynosure of all eyes. Clad in a pink lace buba and iro with white head gear and ipele. She clutched a silver purse.

    She had white and red beads adorned her neck. Her husband, who sat beside her, wore buba and sokoto with blue cap.

    Oyesiku Adelu anchored the ceremony. The Meaningful Decent band electrified the hall with traditional songs and praises of the celebrator.

    The event kicked off with prayers by Christian and Muslim clerics.

    There was a performance by a group called Esa Ewi. It was followed by traditional dances by a cultural group.The troupe wore a blue ankara fabric, with red beads. They wore no shoes; they entertained guests with traditional songs and cultural dances.

    The Ila Group also performed, singing the celebrator’s praises in Yoruba.

    Cutting of the birthday cake followed. There were two cakes. One was cream. It had the celebrator’s picture on it, with green and white flower decoration. The other cake was white. ‘Mama is 70’ was written on it. It had pink dots design. Mama and her husband cut the cake at the random counting of one to 70. There was a big birthday card and banner on both sides of the cake table. The card and the banner bore mama’s picture, with the inscription: “Happy Birthday”.

    Guests took turns to take photographs with her.

    Daughter of the celebrator and Osun State Commissioner for Health Dr Temitope Ilori; Personal Assistant to Chief Akande, Akinyujope Gbadamosi and another daughter, Dr Wura Akande, went round to ensure that guests had a nice time.

    The birthday toast was proposed by the master of ceremony, Adelu.

    In smiles, Mrs Akande said she thanked God for the day.

    She urged women to take good care of their children, saying they are the future of every home.

    Chief Akande said he felt good.

    “For about 48 years now that I have gotten married, I am still with my wife,” he said.

    He described his wife as the best woman any man can have.

    “In our marriage we agreed to live together no matter what the condition is. Except for when I was in the prison, we have always been together and we will always be.

    “What has kept us this far is that from the beginning, we take ourselves not just as husband and wife but also as brother and sister. We do everything together; we love each other, take care of the children together and spend money together,” he said.

    The celebrator’s son-in-law, Mr Gbenga Ilori said he had known her for over 20 years.

    He described her as a mother.

    “I wish her more prosperous years on earth, I wish her to live to 80,90, 100 years and beyond,” Ilori said.

    Son of the late former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Muyiwa Ige wished the celebrator many more years.

    Ige, Osun State Commissioner for Lands, Rural and Urban Development, described Mrs Akande as a fantastic woman, who is strong willed and upright.

    Dr Akande described her mother as a woman living a fulfilled and successful life.

    “She has always been a loving and caring mother to all of us. Mama is very calm and easy going,” she said.

    Senator Ajayi Boroffice said: “Mama is 70, but she is looking like a 40-year-old woman and that means she has comfort and peace of mind; she has a clean heart and because of that, she is able to live well and she looks young.

    “She has been a fantastic mother, a very good wife, a good friend to the husband, a good mother to all; when she was the first lady of Osun State, she gave her husband all the support to succeed,” Senator Boroffice said.

    The 50th birthday of Managing Director of VDT Communications, Mr Abiodun Gideon Omoniyi, was celebrated in style at the Grand African Ballroom of the Intercontinental Hotel on Victoria Island in Lagos.

    For the celebrator, it was a day of double celebration as the day coincided with Christmas.

    Family members, friends and colleagues came to share in the joy of the day with him. Family members and friends exchange banters as they saw again after a long time.

    The Demola Olota Band entertained guests. The occasion was anchored by the popular comedian, Gbenga Adeyinka. It started on a prayer note.

    The traditional troupe of Biola Williams mesmerised guests with sterling performance. The praises of the celebrators lineage delighted not only him, but everyone who were present. They were ‘sprayed’ with crips notes.

    The compere also added glamour to the occasion. He kept the guests laughing at every interval when he grasped the microphone. His jokes were greeted with applauds.

    A 10-minute documentary on the celebrator’s life was shown. Guests watched with rapt attention, every scene of the documentation caught everyone’s attention. They clapped.

    The celebrator’s wife, Folashade, was beside him all day. She radiated joy and excitement.

    Guests eulogised the virtues of the celebrator. They described him as an honest and generous man.

    Former Inspector -General of Police and Chairman of VDT Communications Limited Alhaji Musiliu Smith chaired the occasion.

    Alhaji Smith described the celebrator as sociable.

    “I have always monitored Biodun. He is a type of man who once he is close to you, he is always close to you. He is humble and industrious and his love for people and family is unprecedented,” he said.

    Alhaji Smith supervised the cutting of the cake. He counted from 1 to 50 before the cake was cut. The celebrator with his wife stood hand in hand by the side of the two- layer cake with satellite dish designed on it.

    The celebrator’s children joined them on the podium for group photographs.

    In her tribute, the celebrator’s wife, Folashade, described her hubby as committed and terrific.

    “Your commitment to both the nuclear and extended family and the sacrifices you make to ensure that you spend time with us is deeply appreciated. The children and I are so blessed to have you. The way with which you commit to the children’s education inspires me; the patience with which you bring to difficult matters is worthy of emulation; indeed, you are a terrific husband,” she said.

    His father–in-law, Alhaji J.. K. Yusuf described him as a hardworking and intelligent man.

    “A very quiet, amiable, intelligent and hardworking man, Biodun has strived; it was not that rosy at the initial stage of his life, but due to God’s favour and his dint of hard work, perseverance and blessings from God, he was able to raise his head high among his peers,” he said.

    When it was time for the celebrator to speak, all listened with rapt attention. They gave him a standing ovation.

    Omoniyi said he felt on top of the world for the opportunity given him to attain 50.

    “I feel quiet overwhelmed on what I witnessed today; for this large turnout of family members, friends and colleagues. I am really overwhelmed,” he said.

    He described Alhaji Smith as a man who has been playing a fatherly role to him since they met 30 years ago.

    He specially thanked his wife, saying she is truly his better half.

  • A union of learned friends

    A consultant, Mr Bola Enilari of BOEN Consult, has given out the hand of his niece, Fatimah, in marriage to Babajide, son of a retired surgeon at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Prof Bolaji Akinsanya. The event was held at Haven Events Centre in Ikeja, Lagos. OLATUNDE ODEBIYI was there.

    THE Haven Events Centre in Ikeja, the Lagos State capital, was agog when two lawyers – Fatimah and Babajide, got married. They met in the line of duty and formalised their relationship after a year of courtship.

    Fatimah, niece of Mr Bola Enilari of BOEN Consult, was all smiles in her white flowing gown with silver design around the waist. Her beau, Babajide, son of a retired Surgeon at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Prof Bolaji Akinsanya, was charming in his black suit on top of a white shirt, grey inner jacket with bow tie and a pair of eye glasses. His best man wore the same outfit while Fatimah’s chief bride’s maid wore a pink long dress.

    The couple’s mothers, retired Justice Dolapo Akinsanya (groom’s mother) and Mrs Ronke Enilari (bride’s mother) wore orange buba and iro with gold head gear and ipele to match. Prof Akinsanya and Mr Enilari looked elegant on their complete white agbada with cap.

    Most guests were in traditional outfits of gold and pink colours.

    The venue was decorated in white with lights.

    The white chairs were set around glass tables, which had a glass flower vase with white and green flowers on it.

    There were lots to eat and drink.

    The hall had blacking with white centre rug.

    Dignitaries made a stopover at the red carpet outside the hall greeting each other. Photographers ran after dignitaries to take shots.

    Itinerant drummers were not left out as they sang the praises of arriving personalities, who amply rewarded them.

    D Jewel ushers, dressed in wine with gold design around the waist handled guests’ welfare. They were led by Mrs Bukky Kayode.

    The hall was filled to capacity; there were huge screens in strategic places, beaming the event to guests.

    The couple’s family entered the hall amid songs by Bee Jay Sax and his band.

    The couple came next. They came in from the entrance to the centre stage in company of family members and friends amid hip pop songs by the band.

    The opening prayer was said following which the Chairman of the occasion, and Interim National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Lai Mohammed, mounted the stage.

    He said it was a great joy for him to see the couple married.

    Alhaji Mohammed described marriage as a unique institution where you get your certificate before you start and you spend the rest of your life in it.

    Alhaji Mohammed told Babajide to always exercise patience and Fatimah, not to listen to gossips about Jide.

    “Let him be your best friend, brother and confidant,” he told the bride.

    The gathering laughed when he told Babajide to “answer your wife on time and we will come back soon to rejoice with both of you again”.

    The event continued with the cutting of the cake. It was led by Pastor Kunle Onafowokan and his wife, Wunmi. The couple cut their three-step white cake after the spelling of ‘JESUS’.

    The couple performed their first assignment of feeding each other with the cake. The bride knelt down to feed her husband; the groom responded sitting. They kissed afterwards.

    Replying the Master of ceremony, Jonathan Georgewill, Fatimah said Babajide proposed to her at dinner.

    “He told me that he was tired of my being his girl friend but wants me to be his wife. He got down on one of his kneels and brought out a ring which he put on my finger,” she said.

    “I thanked her and we sealed it up with hugs and kisses,” he interjected.

    After the toast, the couple took to the dance floor, where they were joined by family members and friends.

    Earlier in the day, the couple was at The Redeemed Christian Church of God, City of God Parish in Ikeja, Lagos for the Holy Solemnisation.

    Pastor Onafowokan urged the couple to stay together in love and be patient with one another.

    “Love yourselves and do it all to make each other happy even in the times of trials and temptations,” the cleric said.

    Speaking with The Nation, Babajide said his wife is everything to him.

    Fatimah said she loves everything about him.

    Mr Enilari uged the couple to put their trust in God always.

    Prof Akinsanya told the couple to love each other.

    The sister of the groom’s mother, Alhaja Amatul-Kafeel Oshodi, said the couple should allow God in all they do.

    Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Mrs Olayinka Oladunjoye, urged the couple to be patient.

    “Hold on to God amid all ups and downs, help each other and always be willing to bring out the best of each other,” Mrs Oladunjoye said.
