  • Love at first sight

All roads led to the ancient city of Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, when Adefemi, a lawyer and son of former Osun State Commissioner of Works, Chief Soji Longe, got married to former Miss Adepeju Onikoyi. OSEHEYE OKWUOFU reports.

It was, indeed, a memorable day when Adefemi, a lawyer and son of former Osun State Commissioner of Works, Chief Soji Longe, took his jewel, Adepeju Onikoyi to the altar.

The elaborate wedding, which took place in Ilorin, was preceded by an engagement on Friday, where the two lovebirds received their parents’ blessings.

Before the dignitaries filed out to the reception Hall, there was a service at the Living Faith Church, popularly known as Winners Chapel, situated a few metres away.

Inside the church, colourful tapes and beautiful linen were used to decorate the inner part of the church.

The parents of the couple who were decked in Aso oke, sat in the front roll; next to them were the couple – the bride wore a white flowing wedding gown and the groom, a well made black suit.

The bridal train wore a colourful dress. The women adorn a uniform red head-gear and a yellow strip buba lace. But the young men put on red caps to match. Others wore light brown yellow ankara.

For more than two hours, the dignitaries at the sprawling church edifice listened to counsel from the officiating minister, Pastor Segun Oni, and his co-Pastor, Abraham Adeyemi, who interpreted into Yoruba language.

The cleric reminded the couple that marriage was instituted by God; hence it should be honourable because God is honourable.

He said: “That is why a husband and wife must treat each other with honour. Honour is the opposite of shame. Another virtue expected in marriage is joy, love, goodness and favour, which brings peace.

“Love is what cements marriage. Husband and wife should live a healthy prayer life and cast everything unto the Lord. They must pray together. Marriage is not a traditional institution, not man-made; therefore to get the blessings of God in a marriage, you must honour and celebrate God, the owner of marriage institution.”

Members of the church choir rendered gospel songs intermittently.

At the reception hall, guests marvelled at the well-decorated tall wedding cake and two royal chairs prepared for the couple. The stage was decorated in white linen.

Soon, the couple were ushered in with dance and music rendered by the Nigerian Police Band. Other family members joined the chorus to welcome the couple to their seats.

The arrival of the couple kicked off the reception. There were various local and continental dishes as well as assorted wine.

After cutting the cake, the couple hit the dance floor.

On how the two lovebirds met, Adefemi said: “Well, I came to Ilorin for the first time ever in April, last year with the intention to relax and to attend my friend’s introduction and she happened to be the friend of the bride and so my friend introduced her to me and since that day, the whole thing developed. That is how it happened.”

Chief Longe was full of joy and gratitude to witness the day.

“I feel very extremely good because it’s a long journey for this young boy. He is a lawyer and he has been a very good son to us in the family. So seeing him getting married is a very joyful moment,” he said.

  • A mother’s search pays off

A mother’s dream to get a wife for her son has been fulfilled, with the union of Olaide, daughter of elder statesman Chief Deji Fasuan, and an army officer, Lt Adegbenga Oluwaseyi Adesina, in Afao-Ekiti, Ekiti State, last Saturday. SULEIMAN SALAWUDEEN reports

They met in an unusual way. A few years ago, Olaide Busola, daughter of an elder statesman, Chief Deji Fasuan, boarded the same bus with Mrs Juliet Mojoyin Adesina, who is today her mother-in-law, from Lagos to Abeokuta in Ogun State. Before departing, they exchanged contacts.

Unknown to Olaide, the elderly woman had taken an interest in her. The woman wanted Olaide as her daughter-in-law and today she has succeeded in her plan.

For her, the wedding between Olaide and her son, Lt Adegbenga Oluwaseyi Adesina, at the St. David’s Anglican Church in Afao-Ekiti, Ekiti State, last weekend, was a dream come true.

Amid songs by the choir, the couple arrived in the church about 10am, arms locked and in measured steps. They were followed by their parents, family members and friends.

Adesina was in the ceremonial dress of the Nigerian Army; Olaide donned a white silk gown, which flowed behind her.

The town stood still for the wedding. Residents, who could not attend the church service or the reception, stood in front of their houses to behold posh cars and gorgeously dressed guests streaming by.

The sitting arrangement in the church reflected the couple’s closeness to those in attendance: their parents sat in the middle bench on the front row; other dignitaries sat at the back row. A specially made settee was placed after the last benches in the front for Ekiti State Governor Dr Kayode Fayemi.

Itinerant drummers made brisk business, singing people’s praises and doing stunts with the drums. Commercial photographers took shots of dignitaries and displayed their works for sale at the reception.

In his sermon, Ven Ariyo Agbaje urged the couple to be ready to make sacrifices, saying: “The husband has to offer sacrifices to his wife while the wife equally would have to reciprocate the gesture.”

He said the couple should follow the teachings of the Bible, adding: “Those who refuse to follow Christ are gnashing their teeth today.”

“In this 21st century, the hand phone has been doing wonders in peoples’ lives. The wife should beware of those who would be telling your husband a different story while he is right there beside you and the husband should equally beware.

“Genuinely submit to your husband. See him as the head of your household. The practical way of being a good Christian is to be a successful husband and the other way round. You are a true Christian when your marriage has been successful.

“Your temperament will always be tested by your wife. Don’t be temperamental. Always be in control of your temper and emotions. So many things will put your temper to test. Don’t lose your temper,” Ven Agbaje said.

The couple then signed the dotted lines, with their parents. A thanksgiving followed, with the couple holding two large bowls to collect donations.

Before leaving, Governor Fayemi noted the role of the bride’s father, Chief Fasuan, in the creation of Ekiti State.

Fayemi, who said he was qualified to advise the couple having been married for 25 years, enjoined them to sustain the bond of conjugal unity by remaining true and sincere to their marital vows. He added: “You both have a connection with God”.

Just before guests moved to Omolayo Civic Centre for the reception, former presidential candidate Chief Olu Falae advised the couple to refrain from comparing their marriage with others.

“This is a dangerous attitude which has ruined many families,” he said.

The bride’s mother, Mrs Modupe Fasuan, thanked God for what He has done for her daughter.

“I have never experienced any problem with my daughter. Ever since she came into the world, it has been one success story or the other. My daughter has never given me cause for worries. I wish her a very successful marriage,” she said.

The groom’s mother, Mrs Adesina, urged the couple to trust each other, saying: “The secret of a lasting and peaceful marriage is mutual trust. If a marriage will collapse, it will start by mistrust and suspicion.”

At the reception, the chairman, Dr Kunle Olajide, urged the couple not to discard the counsels given them by the cleric and other guests.

On the dance floor; the couple was joined by family members and friends, who sprayed them with mint fresh naira notes.

The reception was jampacked. No fewer than 2,000 guests jostled for 800 seats, but the intervention of Dr Olajide brought the situation under control.

Among dignitaries at the ceremony were former Governor of the old Ondo State Chief Bamidele Olumilua; Senator Clement Awoyelu; former Minister of Education Prof. Tunde Adeniran; Chief Bisi Egbeyemi; Chief Ojo Falegan; father of former Ekiti State Deputy Governor Chief Segun Famuagun; Chief Seinde Arogbofa; Chief Dayo Okondo; Mr Sunday Arogbofa; Chief Bosun Osaloni; Hon Duyile Korede and Prof. Tunde Akilaya.

The monarchs were led by the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adeyemo Adejugbe, the Alara of Aramoko, Oba Olu Adeyemi, the Alaaye of Efon Kingdom, Oba Emmanuel Aladejare and the Oluyin of Iyin-Ekiti, Oba Ademola Ajakaye.

He described her as a “phenomenon and special.”

He had nice words for his in-laws, saying: “They are a wonderful family; I am blessed to have married from that family. I do not see them as my father and mother in-law; they are my parents also.”

Alhaji Mohammed thanked Allah for making the day a reality.

“It is a thing of joy and we must first give thanks to Almighty Allah, that made the day possible and everybody that came here and we pray Allah to give them a good life they have never known before. It is the joy of every parent to marry out their daughter,” he said.

Dr Segun Badipe and his wife Bukky were installed as the Otunba and Yeye Tadeshe of Oguduland by the Ologudu of Ogudu, Oba Waidi Fashola at a colourful ceremony last Friday. NNEKA NWANERI was there.

Small wonder how funny it sounds for one to leave America and come home to receive a chieftaincy title. Many think its strange and diabolic. Others see it as an opportunity to give back to their fatherland. Among those who took a step of courage is United States based medical practitioner, Otunba Segun Badipe and his wife, an auspice nurse Bukky.

In their own little ways, they have been contributing to the development of their community in their primary area – medicines.Their good works did not go unnoticed as their community recognised them and added another feather to their caps last Friday.

They were conferred with the title of Otunba and Yeye Tadeshe of Oguduland by the Ologudu of Ogudu, Oba Waidi Fashola. It is the monarch’s own way of reaching out to those outside the country to come back home to contribute their quota to the development of the country.

It is also a way for the monarch to honour and acknowledge them based on their contributions to the community.

The ceremony held at the palace ground.

It began when the Badipe’s came in with a ram, kola and gin that were presented to the Oba to kickstart the event.Clad in a uniformed yellow and red agbada to match the white lace which they wore underneath, they were the cynosure of all eyes as everyone who entered the palace ensured they caught a glimpse of the new chiefs.

They bore a white big calabash with their crowns and beards in it. It bore the inscription: Yeye and Otunba.

On presenting the calabashes to the traditional ruler, they knelt for prayers and on many occasions, the Yeye, who is a professional Master of Ceremony, sang praise songs to the monarch to make him stop his subjects from asking them for dollars.

They were decorated with beads on their wrists, Oba Fashola blessed the celebrators with a bunch of leaves several times on their foreheads. As he did so, he kept muttering some words, after which he placed the beaded caps on their heads.

The caps blended well with their dressings.“These are whom the caps fit”, whispered one of the guests.

The couple went round and gave everyone each a handshake. The excited guests eagerly stretched out their hands, waiting for turn.

Chief Badipe, a Lagosian, told The Nation how the honour would spur him into doing more for the country, having spent over 30 years in the U S.

“My wife and I have finally made up our minds to comeback, redouble our efforts and contribute to the upliftment of the country.

I have plans of delving into politics, starting with the local government chairman or Lagos State House of Assembly,” he said.

He thanked the monarch and promised to do more for the community.

The Yeye, also a professional events planner, just got an award as the most fashionable female MC in Houston, Texas. She plans to come home to use the knowledge acquired there for the country.

“Home is home anytime. We do what we do in the US, voluntarily help people so it hasn’t been difficult doing it here.

The only problem people complain of is lack of support for those who have the resources,” she said. The proud father of the new Otunba, Elder Ebenezer Badipe, said he was proud of his son and the achievements he had made. He described his daughter-in-law as a pleasant socialite.

The coronation was part of activities marking the monarch’s 70th birthday. TAJUDEEN ADEBANJO reports

It was no mean event. The high and mighty gathered for the installation of Chief AbdulKareem Adebisi Bamidele Akande, the Interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as Baba-Oba (the king’s father) of Imoru-Ijebu in Ogun State. The event drew A-guests from the political, business and social worlds.

Imoru, a rustic community near Ijebu-Ode came alive last Saturday as Chief Akande’s political associates flocked to the town.

Itinerant drummers and praise singers lined the roads leading to the town, chanting the cognomen of dignitaries as they arrived.

Motorcyclists, popularly known as Okada, had a field day, making trips to and from the venue.

Hawkers made brisk business, selling bottled and sachet water, drinks and confectioneries.

The scorching sun could not deter the crowd. People kept coming yet there was orderliness. Traditional rulers, accompanied by their chiefs and aides, were in long flowing Agbada, beads and horsetails. The dignitaries exchanged banters; others spent time catching up on old times.

Akande’s coronation was part of the activities marking the 70th birthday of Oru of Imoru Oba Munirudeen Adeposi Bashorun.

The ceremony turned to a political rally of sorts. Banners, dotted poles and buildings, with various goodwill messages. A message sponsored by ‘The Pepper Boys’, read: Agbajo owo… It had the pictures of APC leader and former Lagos State governor Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (Agba Akin of Imoru); Chief Akande; Oba Bashorun; Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola (Aremo of Imoru); Hon Bayo Osinowo (Mayegun of Imoru) and Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly Hon Adeyemi Ikuforiji (Akogun of Imoru). They were all present at the event.

Another banner had APC logo and the pictures of Oba Bashorun, Chief Akande and Asiwaju Tinubu, with the message: Eyin Agbagba… Eku Atunse ilu…

The indigenes turned hailing out in large number in appreciation of Oba Bashorun, whose over four years reign as monarch has attracted development to the town.

The arrival of Oba Bashorun, Chief Akande, Asiwaju Tinubu, Ogbeni Aregbesola, Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun and his Oyo State counterpart Abiola Ajimobi enlivened the atmosphere.

Asiwaju Tinubu, who chaired the event, congratulated the celebrators. He wished them long life with good health.

He hailed Chief Akande for his purposeful leadership of the APC. He boasted that the party would provide Nigerians with good leadership in 2015.

Tinubu said the struggle to rescue Nigeria had been on for long, beginning from when since he was a lone it.

“The party would not relent in its struggle to rescue Nigeria from the cruelest and rudderless administration of the Peoples Democratic Party controlled Federal Government,” he said.

He expressed delight that today no fewer than 16 progressive governors are joining hands with him in the crusade for a better Nigeria.

“There was a time I was alone, but today we have 16 governors on a rescue boat. We shall rescue Nigeria as a whole. We shall succeed in this crusade to save Nigeria. As Moses crossed the Red Sea; no going back to Pharaoh again,” Tinubu said.

While hailing APC-controlled states, Tinubu acknowledge the “massive infrastructural development” in Ogun State, describing it as second to none in the history of the state.

“Ijebu-Ode is already a giant construction site with the dualisation of roads going on, the overhead bridge, thank you Governor Amosun for your dedication and commitment to duty which made the transformation possible,” he said.

The monarch’s citation, cutting of the birthday cake and goodwill messages followed.

The highpoint of the ceremony was Chief Akande’s coronation. Clad in purple Agbada, a befitting cap and a pair of shoes, the 74-year old politician was accompanied by his wife, Omowunmi.

Oba Bashorun decorated him with the coronation cap, leaves, and traditional beads before handing his staff of office over to him.

He blessed him and wished him well.

Chief Akande thanked Oba Bashorun for finding him worthy of the honour

Recollecting the crucial role of the traditional institutions in the country, Chief Akande lamented the bastardisation of the institution by the British.

According to him, the function of collecting tax eroded the established respect people had for their traditional institution.

Chief Akande warned traditional rulers, particularly those in the Southwest not to be part of the proposed National Council of Obas.

According to him, the membership of such a council would comprise people who are not of royal blood who would want to ride on the rulers authorities.

Oba Bashorun thanked God for the success of the day.

Asiwaju Tinubu led the celebrators and the three governors to the dance floor.

King of Fuji music Alhaji Wasiu Anifowoshe (KWAM 1) was again at his best, he was on the dance floor dishing out political songs and some of his hit tracks to the delight of the gathering.
