  • Memories are forever

    Memories are forever

The Awori-Ajeromi Grammar School in Agboju, a Lagos suburb, has over the years churned out men and women who now hold enviable positions in the public and private sectors. Many of them are politicians, heads of government establishments and captains of commerce. They are proud of the school which made them.

The school took off in 1962 in Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State with 32 students.

On turning 50, the staff, old students, pupils and principals gathered to make the golden anniversary a grand one. They held series of events during the week among which was a health talk and debate.

Last Saturday was the grand finale of the activities. The climax was the gala and award night held at the Lagos Country Club, Ikeja, Lagos.

It was a memorable reunion for old boys of the school.

Many who had not seen each other since they left school years ago wowed at what they had become. They hugged and shook hands and relived old memories of their school days. It was nostalgic, and there was no doubting their love for their school.

They had a uniform – purple and golden Ankara fabric made for the occasion. The men and women sewed theirs in various styles.

Former Lagos State Deputy Governor Princess Sarah Sosan, who was the chief host, said the day was one they had longed for.

She praised the executives for bringing the body back to life.

Princess Sosan recalled having passed out of high school in 1972, even though she ought to have left in 1971. For her, repeating a class didn’t stop her accomplishment.

“I was very playful. I will always climb a cashew tree and eat up all the ripe cashews which would end up staining my white uniform so badly. Thinking of secondary school days, I remember experiences I don’t ever want to forget; and because school days are days we don’t ever want to forget, days like this should be encouraged so we keep the memories alive,” she said.

She urged those who are doing well to help renovate the school which is in bad shape and others should be able to contribute their quota to their Alma Mata.

Chairman, Central Working Committee (CWC), Chief Bola Oshinowo of the 77 set, said the day was to reunite Aworians and renew the old friendship and the love that existed among them while in school.

Awards were given to members for their contribution to the development of the school. Those who bagged awards were: Princess Sosan; Chief of Staff to the Lagos State Governor, Mr Olanrewaju Babalola; a Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs who is also of the 73 set, Otunba Adedeji Ojora; the schools’ first Senior Prefect Alhaji R.A Ayilara; former Deputy Clerk of the Lagos State House of Assembly Mr Ibisola Ogayemi; Chairman, Baron Group of Companies, Mr Gabriel Essien-Akpan; the first Bursar of the school Alhaji Lateef Quadri and the Osoolu of Osolu Kingdom Oba Abideen Durosinmi.

Others were: Judge of the Federal High Court Justice Aseimo Adumein; Mr Ambrose Okpara; Prince Rabiu Oluwa; Chiarman, Amuwo-Odofin Local Government, Comrade Ayodele Adewale.

    60 garlands for an achiever

FOR Pastor Folu Olusanya, the Managing Director of Celmeng Group of Companies in Europe, US, Nigeria and Ghana, last Saturday is a day to remember as he joined the sexagenarian club. He left no stone unturned to mark his 60th birthday. He hosted his family members and friends to a treat at the Central Business District (CBD) Alausa, Lagos.

The scenery was beautiful. The hall was ornately decorated in wine and gold; scintillating local and international gospel music wafted, from the four ends of the arena.

The birthday also served as a reunion forum for colleagues and former classmates of the celebrator.

The event took off with the hymn Great is thy Faithfulness.

    Olutola Tade emceed the event.

The Sunny Jay Music Band dished out gospel praise and worship songs.

A brief sermon was given by Bishop Victor Taiwo Adelakun, titled: ‘The Mystery of Life’.

Describing the celebrator as a man after God’s heart, an embodiment of maturity and humility, he noted that Olusanya has always been close to his maker.

The cleric urged the guests to measure their life by how much they have donated to the needy and not by how long they live, adding that everyone has a special duty for everyman on earth.

The children of the celebrator presented their father with an award. Guests applauded their gesture.

Other friends and well-wishers of the celebrator came out in turns to eulogise him. They all had many good things to say of Pastor Olusanya as they took turns to describe him in superlative terms.

Wife of the celebrator, Oludolapo said her husband is one in a million having been ever caring and loving husband in all their years of marriage.

One of the celebrator’s daughters said she learnt the art of marriage from her father, having put his family above all things.

Mr Dele Fajiyi, a high school mate and colleague of the celebrator, described him as a kind-hearted, hardworking and courageous man.

“I have known him to be a man who carries everyone along in all he does,” he said.

He also thanked his wife for being a worthy assistant and supporter for his friend.

To Pastor Olusanya’s sister, Mrs Yemisi Kalesanwo, her brother has been a mentor to her and her siblings, who also doubles his family work as a husband to being more than a father to them.

Fun was brought into the celebration as some friends and well wishers were called upon to play a game of passing round a basket which contained wrapped questions. Any guest who had the basket on him by the time the music paused had to pick a paper from the basket. At some time, one of his classmates was caught in the middle of the game and had to tell what the nickname of the celebrator was in school. It was Cacul.

The celebrator and his lovely wife mounted the stage to cut the beautifully designed three-step cake amid fire works, after which he had a special dance with his wife and children.

The proud sexagenarian was full of thanks for the love shown him. He prayed for the younger ones to live worthy and longer lives.

  • A gallant officer goes home

    A gallant officer goes home

The funeral of the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Chinweike Asadu, has been held in his home town, Nsukka, Enugu State.

A mass was held in his honour at St. Victor’s Catholic Church, Onuiyi, Nsukka Local Government Area of the state.

Over 50 Catholic priests and clergymen from other Christian denominations officiated at the funeral.

Deputy Governor Sunday Onyebuchi led a government delegation to the ceremony. Anambra State Deputy Governor Emeka Sibedu represented Governor Peter Obi.

In the homily, Rev. Fr. Joseph Obodo decried what he called the rate of assassination, kidnapping and robbery in the country, noting that the problem was scaring Nigerians in the Diaspora from returning home.

The cleric described Asadu’s death as “an overwhelming tragedy”, emphasising that the family should take solace in the litany of tributes that had poured in since his demise.

Fr Obodo, who said he returned from abroad to participate in the funeral, recalled how he was discouraged from coming because of the high rate of crime.

Obodo said the late police commissioner carried his financial responsibilities during his days in the seminary school. The cleric recounted how the late Asadu lived in a two bed-room apartment and whenever he was teased, the deceased would ask: “Do you want me to go and steal?’.

“He went to Nike, Enugu, where land is sold at N250,000; he didn’t go to other choice areas in the state capital where land goes for N50 million. Besides, he started building his house by erecting a boys quarter first while he worked on the main building. This attests to his humility and simplicity,” Fr Obodo said.

The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Tonye Ebitibituwa, said Asadu’s death had remained a huge blow to him and to the Nigeria Police.

Eulogising his late colleague, he described him as “a dedicated and honest officer who gave all to the service of humanity”.

A special Kwara State delegation to the ceremony was led by Mr Leke Ogungbe, the Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Ahmed Abdul Fatah.

The Kwara Police Command, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Adewale Olatunji, also had many good things to say about the late commissioner.

Also in a special tribute to the late commissioner, the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, said the police would leave no stone unturned in tracking down his killers.

He said although Asadu had been buried, investigations on the circumstances that led to his death would not be buried until his killers were brought to book.

The IGP, who was represented by Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr. Kachi Udorji, warned the late Asadu’s killers not to rejoice as “they had murdered sleep and would never sleep. Sleep shall forever elude you.”

Describing the late commissioner as “a fine officer and a gentleman,” who discharged his duty with characteristic efficiency and speed, the IGP assured Nigerians that his office would keep working hard to find his killers.

“I want to restate the resoklve of the Nigeria Police that no stone will be left unturned in our quest to unmask the perpetrators of this crime.”

Senator Ayogu Eze, representing Enugu North Senatorial Zone, expressed grief over the death, stressing that every effort should be put in place to apprehend Asadu’s killers.

“We condemn this act very strongly; we are urging the police to continue with the investigations and get at the perpetrators of this heinous act,” Senator Eze said.

The Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, Hon. Tony Ugwu, said the council was grieved to lose the highest ranked police officer from the area in such a manner.

In attendance were Speaker, Enugu State House of Assembly Eugine Udo, Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, representing Igbo-Eze North/Udenu in the House of Representatives; former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Okwesilieze Nwodo; former Information Minister Nnia Nwodo; Nigeria’s Ambassador to Uganda Chief Fidel Ayogu; and Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academics, of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Prof. Malachy Okwueze, among others

  • Bound by love

    Bound by love

Where there is love, there is no barrier. This altruism rings true for Abisoye Ogunnusi and her beau, Lanre Balogun, who got married in Lagos Last Saturday. Their different religion did not stop them from taking a vow to love, hold and cherish each other for life.

They tied the nuptial knot at the St Agnes Catholic Church, Maryland, Lagos.

Two days earlier, the engagement was held at Oregun, Lagos. Peach and blue were the colours of the day. Guests got a foretaste of what to come on the D-day at the event.

Last Saturday, St Agnes Maryland brimmed with activities. The church was festooned with colourful balloons and fabrics.

Many Muslims, who attended the church ceremony, joined in the celebration of the Eucharistic mass. It was a show of emotion that depicted the love they have for the couple.

The couple occupied the front pew of the church. The clean-shaven groom was clad in a black suit, white shirt and a golden tie. His bride was full of smiles. She wore a V-neck simple wedding gown.

The girls in the bridal train wore long fitted dinner gowns like the bride. The grooms’ men wore blue fitted suits and red ties with roses to complement their look.

Having taken the Gospel reading from John 17:20-23, the officiating minister, Rev Fr Clement Abiodun, who came from Cote’d Ivoire, urged the couple to profess undying love for each other.

The cleric ended his sermon by leading guests to sing the hit song of the late music diva, Whitney Houston – I Will Always Love You.

The couple, accompanied by their parents and friends, danced to the altar during thanksgiving after their union was sealed and the marriage certificate signed.

Soon after, members of the Christian Women Organisation (CWO) presented the bride with their wrapper uniform, automatically enlisting her as a member of the CWO in her parish. They also presented her with a candle, signifying that she will be a light in her home, community and nation; the rosary beads and Bible.

Guests started relishing old school music on entering the Grandeur Events Place, Oregun, Lagos. The colour at the venue was red; red curtains and table overlays. Scented flowers were on the floor and a red rug lay from the entrance of the hall to the centre where the five-layer cake stood. It had red roses on top it. Different coloured disco lights illuminated and added glamour to the arena.

Demola Olota and his band also turned out in the colour of the day. DJ Larry dished out music for the young ones. There was a cultural presentation by a group. Comedian Tee A anchored the ceremony.

The bride, Abisoye, and her father, Hon Yomi Ogunnusi, stole the show with their dance steps. While her father swirled around the hall to the guests’ admiration, she did the Azonto dance steps with her beau that left many spellbound.

Chairman of the Island Club, Prince Demola Dada, chaired the ocassion. He urged the couple to be tolerant of each other.

In proposing the toast, Francis Edien recalled that the first time the couple met was at his wedding where Abisoye served Lanre food. He also told the guests how the groom, in the last five years, quit playing the Play Station games they were addicted to, so as to beat the daily 5pm traffic to see Abisoye.

As guests clicked their glasses, the first song the couple listened to after they met, Tuface’s True Love, was played.

In his vote of thanks, the groom thanked his mother-in-law, Mrs Emmanuella Ogunnusi for not discouraging her daughter from marrying him.

He also presented his bride to his mother and thanked his elder sister for her motherly love.

Since he didn’t get the chance to dance with his mother on the ocassion because she died 11 years ago, he danced with his mother-in-law and stepmother, Oluwatoyin. He wept while dancing.

Mrs Ogunnusi said she would miss her daughter as she has been her best friend all these years.

Lanre said of his bride: “Abisoye completes me and has made me the man I am today. I am the luckiest man to have her.”

In attendance were the Chairman AIT/Raypower Chief Raymond Dokpesi; Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon Adeyemi Ikuforiji; Hon Abike-Dabiri-Erewa; Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora; renowned essayist Prof Adebayo Williams; Chairman of the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON) and CEO of Prima Garnet, Mr Lolu Akinwunmi, and other members of the House of Assembly.

  • Twin celebration for oldest monarch

    Twin celebration for oldest monarch

THE rich culture of the Urhobo was on display when the traditional ruler of Olomu marked his 96th birthday and 25th anniversary on the throne. The Owhorode of Olomu, Ogbon Ogoni-Oghoro is the oldest member of the Delta State Council of Traditional Rulers and the longest serving monarch in the history of Olomu in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State. The Olomu community was agog as the cream of society came to celebrate with the monarch and his subjects. For the nonagenarian, it was another feather in his cap.

The monarch was in 2011 installed by the Anglican Communion as the Anglican Royal in the World, a title solely held by him, according to palace sources.

Decked in an all-red ceremonial attire, with a beaded Royal Canon cone-shaped crown, white ajuju (fan) in his hand, the monarch, accompanied by Queen Grace Ogbon, moved from one end to the other with grace that belied his nearly one century on earth.

Olorogun Moses Taiga, one of the highest- ranking chiefs of Olomu Kingdom and president-general of Olomu, led other chiefs, including Chief Emmanuel Aguariavwodo, former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), to welcome the monarch with the customary traditional homage, singing and dancing. Clasping their wrists and elbows, the chiefs paid obeisance to their king, sang his praise and reeled out his various titles.

The Oloroguns (chiefs) were resplendent in their flowing wrappers, traditional attires and ivies (beads). Men and women in ceremonial wrappers eulogised the monarch. shouts of Adjuvwe, Adjuvwe rent the air as the monarch rode majestically into the Otorere-Olomu Secondary School, venue of the event.

There were goodwill messages, from President Goodluck Jonathan and Delta State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan. Jonathan described the day as a celebration of “twin glorious occasions.”

He prayed that the legacy of peace, harmony, prosperity and steadfastness, which the Olomu Kingdom is witnessing under the monarch, would endure forever “even as Almighty God blesses you with robust health and many more years of fulfillment.”

Uduaghan, represented by his deputy, Prof Amos Utuama (SAN), an indigene of Olomu said: “Today is very special and historic, Owhorode is a king who is a recorder of affairs; he is the longest-serving Owhorode. His reign of 25 years has witnessed unprecedented development; we have many sons and daughters of Olomu who are well placed. What else does he need? On behalf of the government of Delta State, we congratulate you.

“Of course, for being the oldest reigning king in Delta State, we congratulate you. The celebration is a worthy one, I am here representing Delta State people.”

Ijaw leader Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, had kind words for the monarch. He described the Owhorode as a peace-loving man, whose words and actions epitomise his love for his people. The monarch’s reign, he said, had led to an era of peace and development and praying that God would continue to extend his grace to the monarch to reach a century and beyond.

  • Memorable farewell to a sweet mother

Memorable farewell to a sweet mother

Hers was a life of struggle. The late Mrs Hannah Folorunso Osuntokun became old while barely 30 as she shouldered the responsibility of mothering her siblings as the first child following their parents death. She died on December 24, last year.

Her funeral last Friday brought the high and mighty to Okemesi-Ekiti, a town believed to be located at the bottom of a vast mountain. By 9a.m., guests in dainty cars had started arriving for the funeral. Mrs Osuntokun’s remains were wheeled into the church, accompanied by her children led by Chief Akin Osuntokun and his uncle, Prof Jide Osuntokun.

The officiating Anglican Archbishop of Lagos Diocese, Most Revd Adebayo Akinde, gave a brief account of Mama’s life, noting that she got used to making sacrifice early in life.

According to Revd Akinde, Mama was made a chief in the town because she gave freely.

“If you are not good or have a legacy of selfless service towards the family, your community cannot honour you. Mama left a legacy of selflessness for generations. She was not a Delilah who betrayed her lover, Samson. These legacies are all there for us and anyone who desires to learn. You are either here or there. Let the wise Christian make a choice,” he said.

He urged the congregation to learn from the humble life of the late Mrs Osuntokun who, according to him, “chose a life of devotion to God and total commitment to family despite trials and tribulations.”

Prof. Osuntokun, while acknowledging the august gathering said:“I just cannot afford to continue sitting down without expressing gratitude for such a humbling presence as we have here today in the church.”

The deceased’s son, Chief Osuntokun, a onetime Managing Director of News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said the funeral enabled him to convert two prominent Muslims in the gathering to Christianity for two days.

He was referring to former Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) chair Mallam Nuhu Ribadu and Chairman, Bi-Courtney Consortium Dr. Wale Babalakin.

Osuntokun said: “People talk of the embarrassment of riches but I talk of embarrassment of goodwill. Mama also told me ‘tell your uncles not to keep me too long in the refrigerator.’

“But she was kept in the refrigerator for four months. The Anglican Church share a bit in that responsibility on the account of the Lenten period as they said they would not conduct an interment service during the period.”

He asked the church to use the occasion to make demands, cautioning that his phone and that of his wife should not be demanded “as both got missing that morning.”

Osuntokun said: “These (that is the missing phones) you cannot demand as much as I do know. Any other thing you can ask from me.”

Responding to an earlier request that the family should endow a fund specifically for the growth of the church, Osuntokun donated N1 million. Others among the congregation supported the move with various sums.

The congregation retired to the Anglican Church Primary School for the reception.

Music was supplied by the inimitable King Sunny Ade-led band.

In attendance were: Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko; former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode; Mr Segun Oni who represented President Olusegun Obasanjo and Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on media, Dr. Reuben Abati.

Others are former Commonwealth Secretary General Chief Emeka Anyaoku; former Secretary to Government of the Federation, Chief Olu Falae; representatives of Ekiti State Governor; former governor of Ekiti Mr Ayo Fayose; representatives of the Ooni of Ife and Ewi Ado-Ekiti; Senator Babafemi Ojudu; former Health Secretary Prince Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi and Dr Jimi Oke.

  • LG redefines home entertainment

TV viewing is a popular pastime in Nigeria. This relaxing activity serves as a way of rewarding oneself after a hard day’s work.

75 years ago, television was introduced with skepticism and awe. No one truly believed it would change the way we view the world. Now more than ever people are more attached to their television. A TV set is now being considered as a status symbol by householders; and increasingly a lot of attention is being paid to the quality of TV adorning living rooms.

In the early days of TV, a tube delivering images in black and white was considered to be okay. But with the advent of colour TV and availability of contents for colour TV, the black and white TV has lost its charm. it is no more relevant as globally there have been a mass migration to colour TV. Over time, there has been advanced introductions such as the LCD, LED and 3D TVs, which has brought about tremendous improvement in picture quality.

Recently I was at the atrium of the Ikeja shopping Mall in Lagos to witness the unveiling of the 84-inch Ultra High Definition TV by LG Electronics, a global leader in Consumer Electronics. the launch of the TV which is the world’s first 84-inch Ultra Definition (UD) Cinema 3D Smart TV as well as the first of its kind to be introduced into the Nigerian market was witnessed by a mammoth crowd.

The LG 84-inch ULTRA-HD TV, also known as 84LM9600, is the world’s largest Ultra High Definition TV. The sheer size of the display, which is equal to 4units of 42-inch TVs, delivers an unparalleled picture resolution of 2160p which is 4 times higher than full HD. It is incredibly vivid and crisp, even when viewed from close distances.

The LG 84-inch ULTRA-HD TV comes complete with an enhanced sound which no other TV currently offers. Its 2.2 speaker system delivers a sound output of 50W, boasting two woofers, which delivers an incredible depth and energy, bringing eye-encompassing visuals to life with exhilarating sound.

Speaking on this milestone achievement, the General Manager, Home Entertainment division, LG Electronics, Mr. Steve Ryu said: “It is obvious that our industry is driven by innovation and Ultra Definition which is our latest invention will transform viewing experience.

“This is indeed a watershed moment in TV history because the Ultra HD 4K technology will make it possible for consumers to enjoy crystal clear picture quality. The LG 84-inch ULTRA-HD TV offers quadruple the detail of a full HD 1080p unit, with 8 million pixels.”

The new LG 84-inch ULTRA-HD TV uses LG Resolution Upscaler Plus hardware which delivers higher detail from the existing SD/HD external sources. It provides the most convincing 3D viewing experience currently available outside of a movie theatre. The TV’s Triple XD Engine comes with a TruMotion of 240 Hz with the benefit of fast screen refresh rate which guarantees quality viewing of fast movies and sports.

The LG 84-inch ULTRA-HD TV also has Smart TV ecosystem, featuring well over 1,000 applications. It comes complete with 3D glasses as well as LG’s Magic Remote, now upgraded to understand voice commands allowing users to intuitively access and navigate the Home Dashboard with ease.

Guests at the event, with the aid of the LG 3D glasses, were able to try out the device for the first time; they were enthralled by the breathtaking viewing experience the massive display gives with many admitting that with a new technology like the LG 84-inch ULTRA-HD TV there is bound to be a resurgence in family time which has been recently observed to be waning.
