    New singles from M Smooth

BRACING up for the official release of his latest album, Too Much Music’s artiste, M Smooth has dropped a new singles, Winsh and Sorry If I Worry.

Winsh, the artiste says, is a song that talks about a lady, who took total control of his life at a point in time. “It was hard for me to leave because it was ‘painfully’ sweet; if you understand what I mean. It’s basically about control in a relationship; it could be from the male or female,” he said.

On the other hand, Sorry If I Worry is a mid tempo love song that tries to portray how some lovers lose the best partners for the worst ones. “The idea is to share my story with others about what I went through and also discourage that because when it comes to love, it should be real and sincere,” Smooth explains.

The videos for both singles, he stated, have since been shot and are ready to hit the screen soon.

“Actually, we have released the video for Winsh online and we will be releasing the video for Sorry If I Worry early next year. You will be seeing them on the various platforms in the coming days. Honestly, I’m going to say it loud that the videos for both songs are ready and they are amazing videos; lovely, simple with great story lines. They are also very clean and very catchy and captivating. Let me stop there for now but I would like to ask my fans to watch out for them,” he boasted.

While MR. Kleb produced the songs, the videos were shot in South Africa and directed by Studio Space Pictures.

  • Lancelot Imasuen wins Africa’s slot in 26-segment movie

Lancelot Imasuen wins Africa’s slot in 26-segment movie

While many Nollywood filmmakers are seeking government appointment and others struggling with association politics, blaming the piracy-ridden film industry, one man consistent in his art is Benin-born filmmaker Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen.

Known for historical flicks, the director of Adesuwa, is breaking new grounds, not just with his much-publicised epic movie, Invasion 1897, Imasuen is basking in the euphoria of being the only African director among the selected 26 making the short horror thrillers of The ABCs of Death series.

Only last September, the prolific filmmaker was at the Toronto International Film Festival, where with his associates, he announced the birth of a new project, Feva TV, a 24-hour broadcast meant to serve North America with African content and rid that clime of the dearth that has led to the huge pirating of Nigerian films.

Imasuen’s inclusion in the second part of The ABCs of Death has shot him into global limelight, as millions of movie lovers await the next 26 segments of the horror series.

The first part of The ABCs of Death 2012 American anthology horror comedy film was produced by Ant Timpson and Tim League, a thriller of 26 different shorts, each by different directors, spanning 15 countries.

The 26 chapters assigned a letter of the alphabet and the directors were free to choose a word to create a story involving death. The varieties of death range from accidents to murders. The film premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival and was released on VCD on January 31 and in theatres on March 8, with end credits featuring the music of Australian band Skyhooks’ 1974 song, Horror Movie.

Known for movies that focus on the unexplored aspects of the African experience including tribalism, witchcraft, crime, poverty, religion, and folk beliefs, Imasuen has just concluded his own segment for the Alphabet P, a three-minute piece, entitled Prince Venom, exploring the horrors of death anthology in Benin.

For The ABCs of Death 2, a contest was held for the role of the 26th director. The winner was UK-based director Lee Hardcastle, who submitted the claymation short for T. The horror anthology runs with the tagline, 26 directors, 26 ways to die. For the first 25 segments, a group of 25 directors were engaged and each was given a letter of the alphabet and then tasked with creating a short film about death inspired by that letter. The result was a string of shorts, including “D is for Dogfight,” “F is for Fart,” “M is for Miscarriage,” and more twisted titles to get the viewer’s head spinning.

The filmmaker is expected, later, to be in London for the British locations of Invasion 1897, featuring Nigerian-born Charles ‘Chucky’ Venn, who is famous for his roles as Curtis Alexander in Sky’s One’s Dream Team, Tremaine Gidigbi in Footballers’ Wives, among others.

The top Nigerian stars in the epic, include Segun Arinze, Paul Obazele, Mike Omoregbe, who played the lead role as Oba Ovoramwen, Charles Inojie and the late Justus Esiri.

Invasion 1897 has been endorsed by the Benin monarch, Oba Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolopolo and by the Edo State government.

The film production is co-financed by Senator Daisy Danjuma and South Atlantic Petroleum Limited, supported by Capt Hosa Okunbor. Chairman of FEVA TV in Toronto, Canada and J2konsult in the UK are marketing the film in Europe and planning the London unit of the movie.

Invasion 1897 (Nogbaisi Ovonramwen), according to the filmmaker, is based on the invasion of the Benin Kingdom by the British Empire in 1897 and looting the priceless ancient artefacts of the Benin kingdom, including the famous commemorative head and pendant of ivory mask representing Queen Idia (from court of Benin, 16th century), who was the mother of Esigie, the oba of Benin, who ruled from 1504 to 1550. The commemorative head is at the British Museum, while the pendant is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA.

“It will coincide with the country’s centenary celebration and marks the 100 years of Oba Ovonramen N’ogbaisi’s (the then sitting oba) death in exile in Calabar, on January 14, 1914, where he was banished to by the British.”Imasuen said.

According to the filmmaker, the project would also “kick-start our call for reparations by the return of all looted Benin artworks from museums around the world”.

  • Stir as BON bans songs of COSON members from airwaves

Stir as BON bans songs of COSON members from airwaves

BROADCASTING Organisation of Nigeria (BON) has banned songs by some Nigerian musicians from airplay, in protest of what it called arbitrary levying of broadcast stations by the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON), government’s licensed collecting society.

The musicians, who constitute about 70 per cent of old and contemporary Nigerian artistes, were identified as members, whose intellectual property rights rest with COSON, and for which the society has been hunting down users of such works, who have refused to pay royalty.

Musicians affected by the ban include TuFace Idibia, D’ Banj, Inyanya Mbuk, Olamide, Dr Sid, Sammie Okposo, Banky W, Wizkid, Olu Maintain, 9ice, Sunny Neji, Flavour, Chidinma, Rugged Man, Keffee, Midnite Crew, Eldee De Don, M I, Azeezat, Jazzman Olofin, Ice Prince, Jesse Jagz, KC Presh, X Project, Asha, Konga and African China.

Others are Owen Gee, Dekunle Fuji, Lord of Ajasa, Zoolezoo, Muma Gee, ID Cabassa, Klever J, Terry G, Nomoreloss, Mike Okri, Weird MC, Mode 9, Timaya, Sound Sultan, Waje, Mo’Cheddah, Jay Martins, Slam, Djinee, Solid Star, Omawunmi, Yinka Ayefele, Ebenezer Obey, Victor Uwaifo, Onyeka Onwenu, Dan Maraya Jos, Stella Monye, MajekFashek, Daniel Wilson, Alex Zitto, Sir Shina Peters, Ras Kimono, Wale Thompson, Kollington Ayinla, Adewale Ayuba, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal and Tim Godfrey among others.

BON took the decision to ban the works of these musicians in collaboration with the Independent Broadcasting Association of Nigeria (IBAN). The resolution by the two bodies yesterday, according to IBAN Secretary, Mr. Guy Murray Bruce, takes immediate effect.

COSON had taken several broadcast stations, hotels and other institutional users of musical works to court, and is known to have negotiated payment with many, including DStv, Silverbird and Cool FM among others. The face off heightened after DAAR Communication and a few others were hit with litigation for similar claim. BON had risen to the incident, challenging the modality of payment, which it described as arbitrary and seeking an alternative royalty collecting society, as a way of breaking the perceived COSON monopoly.

COSON Chairman Chief Tony Okoroji said he felt like weeping, adding that it is only in Nigeria that this can take place, stating that the only sin COSON has committed was going to court to compel broadcasting stations to pay royalties for use of music. He noted with regret that there is a common attitudinal disregard for intellectual property right in the country.

Members of the music and film industries showed great concern over the issue at the Protea Hotel, Ikeja, on Tuesday, at an entertainment forum. Many were shocked at how realistic it would be to outlaw such long list of popular musicians from the airwaves.

Notable filmmaker and marketer Chief Gabriel Okoye aka Gabosky described the situation as a slap on creativity, adding that the war is not only COSON’s but for all, and promised to mobilise with COSON to confront BON on the issue.

BON’s Director-General Mr. Emeka Mba, however, called for anamicable settlement.

Mba told The Nation: “Both sides need to come to a negotiated and final settlement. The NBC has already informed both parties that it will intervene by inviting them to a meeting with the Nigerian Copyright Commission.”

Industry commentators have wondered how the stations would meet their local content obligations with the long list of Nigerian artistes affected by the ban.

They said such a situation was of serious concern to the NBC.  Article 3.13.2.2 of the Broadcast code issued by NBC says: ‘For the purpose of free-to-air broadcast, Nigerian music shall constitute 80 per cent of all music broadcast’.

Okoroji described the development as the first in human history when the top artistes of any nation are said to be banned from the airwaves. He insisted that if the sad action was to blackmail COSON for taking some broadcast stations, who believe that they are above the law to court for copyright infringement, he was willing to lay down his life in the defence of the rights of creative people.
