    Tunde Kelani shoots music video

An unfamiliar terrain, it seems, but ace cinematographer Tunde Kelani is known for a touch of musicals in most of his movies, including Campus Queen and Abeni.

The filmmaker, who is just wrapping up his new film, Dazzling Mirage, a Sickle Cell-anaemia-themed flick, is warming up to shoot a musical video, just as his mentee, Kunle Afolayan, who recently shot the Victor Olaiya/Tuface music video collabo for the classic, Baby Jowo.

TK, as he is fondly called, it was learnt, has agreed to do the motion picture works for Raindrop, a song by Brain, a hip hop act, signed to Magikal Entertainment.

After dropping his much-anticipated debut video, Watcha  Looking At?, shot by Africa’s most-wanted music video director, MATTMAX, Brain’s management decided to take the game further for the singer’s third single, Raindrop, a song which for its subject was dropped on Sunday, December 1, being the World AIDS Day.

Given his passion for social issues, TK will be shooting the song’s video, which will come in a mini-documentary.

Tricia Esiegbe’s new show ‘hunts’ paedophiles

Popular actress and host of Bold Faces, a celebrity programme on TV Tricia Esiegbe is coming to public glare again, after a long time from the screen. The actress’ comeback may be another strong one, going by the subject of her new project, a movie, which she said is to help prevent child sexual abuse.

Esiegbe, who has been out of the country for a while, called from London to say that her foundation, Boldfaces International, is set to enlighten the people on paedophiles. To achieve this, Tricia, who made a name as the lead actor of the successful home video, Samadora, said the Boldfaces Foundation has introduced a public awareness programme on child abuse, called The Psychologist.

According to her, the programme aims at ‘’preventing the sexual abuse of children and to encourage victims of child sexual abuse to come out and tell their stories via our television talkshow programme. “We intend to use the platform of The Psychologist to address child sexual molestation in our society, to expose sexual predators and create a support platform for victims of child molestation, and to get the authorities to do more to support our children,’’ she said.

Scheduled to go on air early next year, she noted that ‘The Psychologist is designed as a 30-minute television talkshow programme and it will feature a compelling segment, called Brave Seat of Change.

“We have identified, refined and produced a television programme to help mobilise adults, families and communities to take action towards protecting children before they are harmed. Our stories are real-life heart-breaking stories of people that have experienced child sexual molestation while growing up.  We have a team of researchers that source for true-life stories of Child sexual Abuse and Molestation. The programme is reconstructed by actors, who play out these true-life stories,’’ she said.

The actress said her foundation is partnering several institutions, including the Nigerian Police, to give the programme the desired value.

Presently managed by Tricia & Kingsley Kerry and specialist consultants from various fields of expertise, Boldfaces Foundation was established a few years back to advocate for the sexually abused children and victims, and provide evidence-based information to policy makers, media and advocacy groups.

  • Gabosky tackles distribution nightmare in Nollywood

Gabosky tackles distribution nightmare in Nollywood

A new effort at tackling the challenges of film distribution in the Nigerian motion picture industry, otherwise called Nollywood, was unveiled Monday. Championed by G-Media, a production, distribution and marketing company, owned by Chief Gab Okoye aka Gabosky, the initiative, is leveraging on acquired Federal Government loans and grants to establish structures in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The capital intensive project is expected to make Nigerian films and related intellectual property products available and auditable, thereby closing the gap that pirates have filled all the years.

A respected Nollywood marketer, Chief Okoye, noted for one of the earliest Nollywood films; Battle of Musanga and Nneka the Pretty Serpent, is railroading what experts say is the much-anticipated watershed in the annals of Nollywood.

Speaking at the unveiling and special presentation of the project to practitioners and regulatory agencies, including the National Film and Censors’ Board (NFVCB), proponents of the National Distribution and Exhibition Framework (NDEF), the G-Media boss noted that “the problem with Nollywood started because we did not build on the momentum that Nollywood gathered after its birth. We were too amazed by the phenomenon that we failed to realise the need for real structures that would ensure that the success would last for a long time. It is time to put things right and that is what we are doing with G-media.”

Distribution has often been identified as the major problem with Nollywood, prompting the Federal Ministry of Finance to allocate about 50 per cent of the Federal Government N3 billion Nollywood grant towards distribution infrastructure.

It has been argued that due to the absence of proper distribution platforms across the country and dearth of cinemas, piracy has thrived at a globally unprecedented 82 per cent penetration.

According to Gobasky, “we have worked hard for many years to put this distribution platform together so that our people can enjoy the movies they have always loved without having to go through hassles to get them.”

While many have argued that the Federal Government’s loans and grants have been difficult to access, Gagosky’s testimony follows that of Tony Abulu, who got money from Nigerian Export and Import (NEXIM) Bank to shoot Doctor Bello and Kene Mparu, who got the FilmHouse franchise and secured a loan with Bank of Industry (BoI) to establish cinemas in some parts of the country, Gabosky’s feat is certainly the biggest so far.

“The G-media distribution stands on firm ground with support from the bank of industry, FCMB and additional funding from the $200 fund for the creative industry, an initiative of the Federal Government under the Ministry of Finance,” Okoye said.

He said the first phase of G-media distribution project would commence in January 2014 with 25 stores spread across the nation, 30 regional distributors as well as 4,000 community stores.

“It will also leverage on a state of the art web portal system to link all distributors and major stake holders to the central system for sales and statistical information as well as transparency of the system,” he said.

He urged filmmakers, who have quit due to piracy, to avail themselves with opportunities provided by the new dawn.

“One of the results of the distribution problems of Nollywood has been the withdrawal of some of the best hands that gave Nollywood its early success from the movie scene. When sales dropped drastically and less capable hands become the leaders of the industry, many major producers and directors thought it best to stay away from the rot. It is important for the old hands to come back and join the new ones for a truly dynamic industry. Our promise to them is that we will get their movies to the buyer wherever they may be,” Gabosky assured.

He said the G-Media stores will commence operation, with the distribution of Biyi Bandele’s Half of a Yellow Sun, Mahmood Ali-Balogun’s Tango with Me and Charles Novia’s Alan Poser, among others.

The actress, since stories of her rumoured marriage crash, has kept mum and this has made a lot of her fans believe that indeed, the one-year-old marriage has hit the rocks just as many others in Nollywood.

However, to the chagrin of movie lovers and fans, her husband has not only refuted the rumour, but denied knowledge of it.

  • Kokori deserted as JTF, Kelvin’s gang battle for control

Kokori deserted as JTF, Kelvin’s gang battle for control

The Joint Task Force (JTF), Operation Pulo Shield, has uncovered an armoury of the suspected kidnap kingpin and leader of the Liberation Movement of Urhobo People (LiMUP), Kelvin Ibruvwe (aka Oniarah), in Koko, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State.

The discovery of the weaponry followed an intense push by men of the Sector 1 Command of the JTF to rid the Urhobo town of remnant of the ragtag army purportedly led by Ibruvwe, who was arrested in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on September 25.

The Nation learnt that no fewer than 10 of Kelvin’s gang members, including his second and third in-command, Mr. Rufus Ovwigho (aka Don Jazzy), who succeeded Kelvin after his arrest and Ezegbe Ogheneruno (aka Commander Kelly) had been killed since the operation to rid the area of criminals began.

Also, 12 members of the gang, including a member of the team which abducted a security expert, Dr. Ona Ekomu, have been arrested.

A dilapidated storey building located off Market Road in the heart of the town was captured by the JTF during a bloody shootout, which lasted from the early hours of last Thursday till Saturday.

The volume of arms and ammunition recovered from the building could not be ascertained, but our visit to the town yesterday showed that troops have taken over control and secured it with no fewer than 10 military checkpoints manned by stern-looking soldiers in strategic locations.

The Commanding Officer of the 3 Battalion, Lt.-Col. Ifeanyi Otu, who spoke with reporters in the deserted town yesterday, said the internal security operation to rid the area of criminal and ensure security of life, property and to create a conducive environment for lawful activities had been carried out.

He said: “This internal security role has been carried out by the synergy of officers and men of the services, mainly the Army, the Navy, the Air Force and the Department of State Services (DSS).”

Although Lt.-Col. Otu was silent on the number of casualty, if any, resulting from the bloody duels, a source in the team, which confronted the gang members, told our reporter that they were armed with sophisticated weapons and ammunition.

“They (youths) took position on storey buildings and fired at us for several hours. It was clear that they wanted to regain control of the community. We overpowered them and tightened our hold,” the military source added.

A community source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said at least two members of the gang were gunned down, while others, who sustained gunshot injuries, were taken away from the scene by their members.

However, the JTF boss lamented the activities of some of the community’s leaders, who he accused of encouraging the criminal activities of the group, stressing: “The conspiracy of silence maintained by the community leaders and especially its elders fanned the embers of these criminals. It also encouraged the establishment of a kidnap/militant groups led by Kelvin Ibruvwe.”

The Nation’s visit yesterday showed that Kokori had become like a ghost town as over 95 per cent of its inhabitants had fled the community in the wake of the recent bloody clashes between troops and members of the armed gang. Nearly all the houses in the communities’ main quarters were empty.

Scenes of destruction and carnage dotted the town: windows and doors were smashed. Over 50 cars and motorcycles were either destroyed or burnt. One of the victims was said to be a visitor, who drove his girlfriend to the town on Friday. His car was burnt as used to barricade the main road leading to the Egba Shrine in the centre of the town.

The shrine was still smouldering yesterday. JTF sources said troops were engaged in an hour-long gun fight with the gangs, who took cover at the shrine before they were overpowered. The shrine was believed to render the militants invincible and bulletproof.

The masterminds of the latest destruction were a subject of debate between the community leaders and the JTF authority.

Residents accused troops of looting shops and houses in the wake of the abandonment of the town by residents and criminals. One of the leaders, who spoke with our reporter, said his house was among those looted.

However, Lt.- Col. Otu debunked the allegations, saying: “The allegation of destruction and looting of property by the troops is not true. The daily administration is closely monitored by five officers; discipline is maintained as one is not unaware of the possible fallout in an operation of this nature.”

He said the allegations were meant to draw sympathy from those who knew nothing about what was going on in the town before the current situation, adding: “It is an attempt to undermine the good work the troops are doing in Kokori, aimed at restoring law and order in a community, which hitherto drifted towards anarchy.

“The headquarters of Sector 1 under the command of Brig.-Gen. Pat Akem has the backing of the state government to maintain law and order and restore normalcy in Kokori. It is on record that the rate of kidnapping and armed robbery has reduced in Edo and Delta states following the ongoing operations,” he added.

Otu appealed to the indigenes to cooperate with the troops in the ongoing operations to restore normalcy.

  • Fast and furious race actor dies riding

Fast and furious race actor dies riding

As the movie world mourns the death, Saturday, of Paul Walker, an undercover agent in the cash cow series, Fast and Furious, there arose mixed feelings among fans who juggle thoughts between the actor’s painful demise and curiosity over the re-scripting of the much anticipated 7th installment of the action film, gunning for next year.

Walker who played agent Brian O’Conner in the movie was killed in a tragic car accident in California. He had been shooting the next installment of the Fast and Furious franchise in Atlanta, but was said to have returned home to California for thanksgiving when the accident occurred while on his way back from a charity event.

The thespian was a passenger in a Porsche Carrera GT driven by his longtime friend, Roger Rodas. Reports say Rodas lost control of the car and crashed into a light pole and tree in the community of Valencia, north of Los Angeles. When police arrived at the scene of the accident, the car was in flames and the two men inside the car were declared dead at the scene. Walker, 40 is survived by a 15-year-old daughter named Meadow.

The Fast and Furious brand which released its 6th outing last May is known to have topped box office sales chart at every release since 2001.

The American street-racing action film started off with Paul Walker, Vin Diesel among others, and only just added Transporter star, Jason Statham in the last series.

Concerns among fans of the series who have kept social media buzzing since Saturday is similar to the ones expressed two years ago when Andy Whitfield, the British star of US TV drama Spartacus died, and for a long while shut down production until Aussie actor, Liam McIntyre was brought in as replacement. Even then, McIntyre disclosed Whitfield’s shoes were too large for his legs.

With so much intrigue, the 6th installment has heightened expectations, bringing the tale of Dominic Toretto (Diesel), Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker), and their fellow professional criminal/car racer types to a conclusion of sorts.

It is said that not only was Fast and Furious 7 on the way, the sixth and seventh installments in the high-octane thrills franchise were shot back-to-back with the addition of Statham. Chris Morgan who penned the last three chapters in the franchise is said to have scripted both the sixth and seventh movies.

The 7th chapter has been shooting partly in Abu Dhabi since November 8. It is due to be released on August 7, 2014, but with the passing of Walker, the feasibility of the target date may depend on Morgan and how ‘fast and furious’ other factors may turn out.
