Fashion Review: Let’s Talk Aso Oke: A Rising Classic Fashion Fabric

Imagine a young designer creating stunning Aso Oke outfits worn at several celebrations. With the vision to transform the fabric into one that accommodates different styles, the designer envisions beautiful wear that can fit any kind of ceremony; casual or formal.

He chooses a bold pattern, rich in blues and gold, and designs a form-fitting silhouette that suits the body while allowing for free movement. When the outfit is complete, they go ahead to experiment with accessories, statement footwear and head gears that turn heads.

This is the versatility that the famous Aso Oke fabric provides. Bold, regal, and undeniably rich in culture, Aso Oke is more than just a fabric – it speaks volumes without uttering a word. Nigerian traditional attire holds a unique place in the heart of the country’s rich heritage, representing diverse ethnic groups with distinct identities. While these cultural fabrics are beautiful, they are not just for the beauty of it but for the rich meaning and history behind them.

Fabrics like Aso Oke, Ankara, and Adire, are more than just handwoven textiles they tell stories of our heritage, pride and community. We appreciate the uniqueness Africans bring to the fashion scene; however, our focus is the blending of traditional fabric, Aso Oke.

What makes Aso Oke outstanding is how it has gained global attention. The fabric is now worn on international runways, worn by celebrities, and embraced by fashion lovers worldwide.

Aso Oke is a traditional fabric owned by the Yorubas, ranking as one of the top indigenous attires that we have in Nigeria. It is hand-woven from fibre and raw cotton.

Let’s have a quick backstory of how this fabric came to be, from raw materials to the fabulous material that it is today.

The cotton is first harvested, processed, spun into yarns, dyed into colours and left at the mercy of creative craftsmen and women who create this everlasting textile. Another name for Aso Oke is Aso Ofi, meaning a fabric created on the wooden loom. There is no difference between the two names as they both refer to the same fabric.

One significance that Aso Oke has is how it differentiates the Yoruba culture from others. Anyone can wear Ankara or Adire, but it takes someone who deeply appreciates the culture to make a classic outfit out of Aso Oke.

In the past, Aso Ofi was not something you wear every day. They were only worn for special occasions by some specific people that we might refer to as celebrities; Individuals like kings or chiefs. However, today, Aso Oke has seamlessly been integrated into contemporary fashion, becoming one of the best choices fashion designers have made to improve their collections. Outfits like shorts, jackets, pants, waistcoats, and gowns are crafted with the Aso Oke fabric.

It is becoming so popular that you can find the garments appearing at almost all events.

Whatever the case may be, Aso Oke would never go out of style for the Yorubas and even international designers who have inculcated the fabric to produce unique designs by coming up with timeless trends.

We’ve had instances of designers who joyfully embarked on the journey to stay committed to the richness of the artistry involved in Aso Oke. One such persons are Rilwan and Ayodeji. In an interview with the fashion duo, they were asked to share how they delved into working with Aso Oke and the things that inspired their love for the textile.

In the words of Rilwan, ‘Our journey into Aso Oke began through a deep connection to the Yoruba heritage. Growing up in a Yoruba household, Aso Oke was present in every celebration – from weddings to naming ceremonies. But it wasn’t until we studied the fabric more closely that we saw how versatile and timeless it truly is.

We started experimenting with modern cuts and silhouettes while maintaining the traditional weaving techniques, and that’s when we came together, falling in love with it. The fabric tells stories; each thread, and pattern is rich with meaning, and that captivated us.’

Rilwan also went ahead to educate people who weren’t familiar with the fabric. He says, ‘Aso Oke is not just a fabric you craft into a beautiful dress or jacket, it is a symbol of identity, culture, and pride. The craftsmanship involved in Aso Oke is meticulous. It is hand woven, and that is why it takes weeks to create, although depending on the design’s complexities.’

He also acknowledged the fact that enthusiasts are beginning to notice unique ways to bring out the best in the fabric, by blending it with contemporary styles, making it more accessible for everyday wear. Nevertheless, the possibilities of an Aso Oke lover are endless.

Different types of Aso Oke exist in the market. They are; Etu – A dark blue fabric often with a striped pattern. Sanyan – Light brown made from beige silk and Alaari – Rich red, traditionally woven with silk.

Rilwan and Ayodeji are the dynamic duo behind the thriving Afrocentric fashion brand that caters specifically to men. Their journey began during their undergraduate years at a university in Nigeria, where they first conceived the idea of starting a fashion label that would celebrate and promote African heritage. As friends with a shared passion for fashion and culture, they found common ground in their desire to create a brand that would resonate with modern African men while staying true to their roots.

Despite the challenges of balancing their studies with their burgeoning business, Rilwan and Ayodeji remained dedicated to their vision. They gained valuable experience by working and interning with reputable brands across Nigeria, which provided them with insights into the industry and helped them refine their craft. This hands-on experience not only honed their design skills but also gave them the business acumen necessary to navigate the competitive fashion landscape.

Today their collection is one filled with unique classic wear for men that transcends the ordinary. The Ikoyi 2022 collection has what it takes to cause a steer in the global stage of fashion and as such transform the entirety of cultural wear with its fusion with the Western world.

As part of the 2022 Ikoyi collection, the designers stitched the shorts using Aso Oke fabric. They went outside the norm of the usual sewing of agbada with the Aso Ofi fabric to weave something simple for men who love looking simple yet sophisticated. The dominant colour of the material is pink, ranging from light to darker hues, creating depth and variety within the design. The red colour in the fabric adds a touch of vibrancy and energy to the shorts.

Furthermore, it has a bold edge which completes the design to be a soft palette. The black detail balances the lightness of the pink, making it versatile enough for both relaxed and more styled outfits, having the freedom to style it with a variety of accessories that suit your taste.

Much like the first design in the collection, the second pair emanates from traditional textiles, and weaving styles like Aso Oke, known for bold striping patterns. The pinks and reds represent a modern twist on these heritage textiles, reflecting warmth.

The use of pink, which is associated with youthfulness and positivity, suggests that this design is inspired by a more vibrant, optimistic view of life. It’s perfect for someone who wants to stand out with a bright, energetic look while still embracing cultural roots. Just like the model outrightly matches the shorts with a white long-sleeve shirt, you can too. However, you don’t need to match it with a white shirt. A black shirt can fit.

Whatever your style is, ensure it suits the occasion, bringing out the best in your outlook. The only downside to wearing this short is, it cannot be worn for every event or gathering. While it can be worn for parties and evening events, it cannot be worn to religious gatherings.

These stylish shorts feature a similar utility-inspired design as the previous pairs, with the inclusion of a side pocket that adds practicality. The fit appears structured but relaxed, ideal for casual wear. The fabric has thin white vertical pinstripes that run consistently throughout. This pattern adds a touch of sophistication and elongates the figure while keeping the overall aesthetic simple and clean. The fabric is a heritage fabric called Sanyan in Yoruba land.

The material consists of unique colours like beige, a base colour of the shorts, giving a warm and earthy feel. Moreover, it is a versatile neutral tone that can be worn in both casual and semi-casual settings.

Another feature of the material is its White pinstripes. They are subtle but provide a nice contrast, making the design more dynamic without overwhelming the simplicity of the solid mustard background. The design focuses on function and clean lines, which are hallmarks of minimalist fashion. The mustard yellow tone brings in warmth, reminiscent of fall tones or desert landscapes, aligning with nature-inspired fashion trends.

Mustard yellow has made appearances in various fashion eras, especially in 70s retro styles. The use of this colour, combined with simple stripes, draws from a desire to reintroduce classic, timeless colours into modern utility fashion.

Conclusively, as the brand celebrates the fusion of style, art and sustainability Rilwan and Ayodeji collections connects traditional and western flair, with a reverence of the past and a vision for the future. This is indeed a transformation, enabling men to embrace stylishness, confidence and class.

  • Smart options for plus-size women

    Smart options for plus-size women

LOOKING trendy, classy and gorgeous is a matter of choice. The clothes you wear, the accessories you match them with as well as your carriage all go a long way to determine how you look and the impression others have about you.

Interestingly, women who are plus-sized are getting very creative and dramatic when it comes to their look.

Curvy outfits, bodycon or mini skirts are explored, unlike what we had in the past with outfits that were bigger and had no sex appeal.

Plus-sized women include anyone above size 12. In the past these women were contented with any dress without considering if it fits their body figure, and most times they tended to be indecisive in picking the right choice of dress to suit their body.

Apparently things has changed in recent times and they have become bolder and more daring.

Here are some trendy outfits and designs that you can explore and rock with class and style.

    Kimono

Kimono has its origin from Japan. It is a T-Shaped wrapped garment that stretches from the shoulders all the way down to one’s heels or knees. It is mostly made of silk or any other choice of materials. It can be worn for different occasions either formal or casual. It is no doubt a dress that brings out the aura of a plus sized body.

    Bou bou

Bou bou is a classic dress worn by mainly African women. It is mostly made up of silk, cotton, synthetic and can be embroided to look more African.

Overtime the grand Bou Bou has become a fashion alternative for an elegant casual look. It could be worn as a gown or a blouse and it is definitely a dress to rock for that desired look.

    Peplum dress

A peplum is a gathered strip of fabric at the waist of a piece of clothing. The peplum blouse can be paired with a pencil skirt or a flared Jean to look stylish in no time. Versatile, it could pass for both casual and formal look and works best for women with a plus size figure.

    Palazo trousers

The palazzo trouser is a wide leg pants fitted at the waist and flared out from the hips. The wide legged trouser will definitely make a statement for that plus sized body.

  • Fashion review: Are the flick and expression bridal collections worth the hype?

Fashion review: Are the flick and expression bridal collections worth the hype?

It is no secret that Nigerians love fashion and I make bold to say that Nigerian fashion and creative designers are top ten in the world. So, it comes as no surprise that this love and sense for fashion and the best styles find its way into bridal fashion because asides the love for fashion, if there is another thing Nigerians love, it is definitely weddings. And they go all out to deliver the best looks possible via traditional and contemporary bridal outfits.

Hadassah Bridals, the brainchild of Ifedolapo Olayemi-Okewole, has been delivering top of the line looks and designs since she started and it was until recently that she started putting out collections to the delight of observers and industry watchers.

We’ll thoroughly examine the standout qualities of two recent collections, the Flick and Expression Bridal Collections, especially the former, which created a bit of buzz when it dropped. We want to know if the collections are worth the hype- and of course, your money. Our review encompasses all aspects, ranging from understanding the designer’s vision or history to identifying the key elements of the fashion collection, as well as predicting the brand’s future.

Specially designed with some of the world’s best global traditional craftsmanship methods in mind, the rich choice of designs and the diversity of fabrics in the Flick collection, make it appealing to all brides from all walks of life for their big day.

Teaming up with Nollywood star, Seun Osigbesan, for the bridal looks, it certainly created a buzz when it dropped as she embodied the different looks in a relatable manner. At its core, the Flick collection featured an amazing range of stylish gowns for bold and swift brides who desire a ‘princessy’ appearance in their ball wedding gowns and it featured intricate patterns and unique silhouettes, presenting them in a way that appeals to the modern, stylish bride.

According to Olayemi-Okewole, she said while planning for the collection, she wanted it to feature something for everyone. “We partnered with a face that many people know and love and that is exactly what we had in mind with this collection- one that many would know and love. It features dreamy, princessy ball gowns perfect for a brides’ big day. The pieces are versatile and luxurious and designed to stand the test of time in the sense that they have a timeless look.”

Did she deliver on this promise? Yes, as this collection was very generous with sizing and styles, such that it truly boasts something for everyone.

Similarly, close attention to detail was clearly paid, as craftsmanship and solid artistry were on display.

While this collection appears stunningly dreamy with a couple of versatile gowns, it did not push boundaries enough or properly challenge conventional notions of fashion. It would have been great to see a bit of unconventional materials usage, seeing as it was featuring a movie star, people who often push the boundaries in fashion. It could have explored themes like avant-garde silhouettes and incorporate innovative techniques to create truly one-of-a-kind pieces. It feels that some of the designs, though stunning, have been seen before.

Overall, the designer’s vision and commitment to creativity shines through, and a desire to showcase the best of bridal fashion is evident.

Another thing that would have been good to see in this collection is an extensive array of accessories. Bridal accessories are a huge part of bridal fashion and play a major role in bringing together a look or a concept. Teaming up with a movie star should have had the bridal house bursting out the accessories to complement every gown because as we all know; good accessories can indeed make or break a look.

CLOSELY following the Flick Collection and a tough pandemic year, the Expression collection is a sight for sore eyes.

In what can be described as a nod to ‘pandemic fashion’ that saw many couples requiring quick, simple nuptials, this collection features exquisite civil registry ensembles for brides eager to embrace elegant registry events while maintaining simple elegance. In short, a single phrase to describe this collection is Regal Elegance.

Speaking on this collection, the creative director of the brand said she knew this particular collection will resonate so well with brides “as this is something we have been asked to do for a while. Previous collections have done well in the past and this is certainly not going to be an exception as we never fail in upping the ante in the area of unique, quality and timeless designs as well as pieces.”

We will again examine if she lived up to this promise. This collection ticked the right boxes in terms of elegance, simplicity, attention to detail, variety of colour shades and bespoke designs. Doing one better from the previous collection, it had a wide variety of accessories that brides could choose from and the collection has a number of versatile pieces that can be styled in different ways. Additionally, the collection incorporates fabrics like silk, chiffon and organza in addition to lace, adding a touch of luxury and sophistication to every look.

One area it lacked however, was non-inclusivity in sizing, this collection could have definitely considered and accommodated bigger brides in its designs.

Advancements in technology could influence Hadassah Bridal’s designs and production processes, including experimenting with advanced designs, smart textiles, laser cuts and exploring virtual fashion experiences.

Both collections, especially the Expression collection, boast timeless pieces with minimalist aesthetics and putting quality over quantity definitely appeals to consumers looking for investment pieces that can stand the test of time. It is possible for a mother to pass on her wedding dress to her daughter and these collections certainly seem able to achieve this feat.

The fabrics used in both collections whisper authenticity and quality, poised to stand the test of time and fortune. The choice of fabrics in both collections prioritise durability, comfort and style and are suitable for any climate.

Are both collections worth the hype and your money? My verdict is yes, they are.

  • Heat Waves: A review of SS 21 Afro tropical collections

Heat Waves: A review of SS 21 Afro tropical collections

Every year, fashion houses push the boundaries of their artistic flair by inventing novel styles revealed in seasonal collections. Fashion expert José Teunissen, once said, ‘What characterises fashion is its urge to innovate. Every six months, fashion presents itself as a moment where the spirit of time is captured in a moment of absolute beauty.’

Innovation is the backbone of fashion. It is the sole representation of the time and season. On runways and at fashion events, fashion designers rock their breathtaking attires on the beautiful bodies of models strutting confidently in the hallway.

The world is constantly evolving, and so is fashion. Over the years, we have witnessed the trends of different outfits. Timeless pieces, like the miniskirt, beret, sequin, white boot, and flared trousers in the 60s brings back that nostalgic feeling. To date, the 60s fashion styles are resurfacing as new collections.

From Mod fashion in the mid-60s, we saw the rise of hippie fashion the following decade. When you think of the 1970s fashion, bell bottoms, maxi dresses, frayed jeans, and peasant blouses come to mind. It was the peak of experimental fashion, as designers played around with different styles. The result? A collection of vintage styles.

The 2000s fashion gained entrance with iconic styles. In an era of technology and Y2K, the styles invented allowed people to express their individuality with a playful vibe—the leather skirts and jackets, handkerchief tops, chunky shoes and hoodies were popular among the millennials.

Today, fashion keeps evolving with trends. In 2021, the fashion world is moving towards sustainability. Away from fast fashion outfits, new inventions address the need for eco-friendly, timeless pieces that express one’s uniqueness. Brands are beginning to embrace slow fashion by incorporating ethical practices, using recycled materials, and becoming conscious of quality over quantity.

The rise of social media in the 21st century has brought a new dimension to fashion. Many innovative fashion designers are becoming bold and daring with their fashion pieces, expressing their creativity through fabrics and stitches. On social media platforms, like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, these brands can host virtual runways and live sessions to showcase their unique styles and connect more with their target audience.

Africa’s fashion industry has gained a global spotlight due to the vast array of innovative styles, blending contemporary and traditional fabrics. With events like the Lagos Fashion Week in Nigeria, Swahili Fashion Week, and Dakar Fashion Week, fashion connoisseurs have captivated audiences worldwide with creations exuding excellent craftmanship, showcasing the vibrant African heritage and cultures.

The emergence of novel fashion collections leaves one dazzled at the enormous talents in Africa, one of which is Ezinwanne Uzoaku Anah. Launching her minimalistic fashion brand ‘Zinny’ in 2017, she has earned her mark in the industry with a bespoke women’s ready-to-wear line that adds a unique perspective on modern femininity.

Her avant-garde creations have garnered admiration from critics and consumers, captivated by her commitment to quality and innovation. For a fast-rising star like Ezinwanne, it is no surprise her brand was listed by one of the most influential newspapers Guardian Life among the ‘Fast-Rising Designers to Watch’ in 2018.

Her journey in fashion has been one marked by creativity, innovation, and excellence. One of the significant limelight for Ezinwanne Uzoaku Anah was her participation at Lagos Fashion Week, where she showcased her first Spring/Summer 2019 collection, affirming her place as a designer to look out for in the African fashion industry. Recently, she was nominated for Designer of the Year at the 2020 African Design Awards.

Yet again, Ezinwanne has launched her highly anticipated 2021 fashion collection, ‘Afro Tropical’. The central theme of this ensemble is culture fusion as it explores the integration of traditional fabrics into contemporary designs. African prints are beautiful, crisp fabrics that add a spark to the skin. They can be sewn into different styles, perfect for every occasion including professional events. When you encounter a person wearing an Ankara outfit, you can’t help but be amazed by the intricate patterns and attention to detail.

In recent years, African fashion has embraced a new form of art with brands creatively combining contemporary fabrics and vibrant, patterned Ankara prints to sculpt masterpieces. A broad view of the Afro Tropical collection reveals the detailed styling, innovative designs, and choice of fabrics.

Each design in this collection has a middle ground: elevating style for the contemporary woman willing to express their uniqueness through fashion.

The first statement piece in this eclectic collection gives off a comfy yet stylish and high-class fashion outfit for young millennials and Gen Zs. The upper part is a loose-fitted, transparent green shirt beautified with bishop sleeves. For a generation that loves to slay, the transparent net shirt is never going out of style.

Zinny’s addition of the short, green neck bow creates a distinction. Without a doubt, the bow and sleeves are the ultimate attraction of this chic shirt. We love the choice of organza fabric. Organza is known for its versatility as it fits perfectly for different styles. The lightweight material enhanced the aesthetics of the outfit, leaving a glossy feeling.

To complement the shirt, the designer opted for a short Ankara skirt with flare prints. The organza fabric placed diagonally from the waist to the print adds a corresponding touch to the style. While this is original and brings a new perspective to skirt designs, creating the skirt without adding organza would still be good since the shirt has an aesthetic appeal. Also, the mini black tube could have been alternated for a bell-button tube to fit the transparent shirt. However, the choice of Ankara print stood out, as the display of vibrant colours and placement of pattern exudes elegance.

For styling, the model depicted the youthful aura the dress was meant to capture. From the short bob hair to the ankle strap nude heel, this outfit blends with the contemporary trend of bold styles.

Extending her creativity and artistic push, Ezinwanne makes a bold move with the second look in the collection – a sleek dress with bold colours. This is a 100% original concept as it incorporates new elements to enhance the dress. This beautifully designed flowery pattern Ankara fabric with the display of bold colours captivates one’s attention. The designer could have gone for any of the three primary colours pronounced on the Ankara to style the dress but opted for red.

In the fashion world, red is a powerful colour that evokes passion. We can attest that the colour red elevates the feel of this stylish dress.

The upper length of the dress is a long-sleeve, button-down shirt with a collar held in place by a silver button. The Ankara sleeve integrates into the red fabric wrapped beautifully around the wrist with a detachable pin. This dress features a prominent bow at the centre, crafted with a rich red fabric contrasting against the soft Ankara print. The two-piece bow creates a dramatic focus, adding a touch of sophistication and elegance to the outfit.

The designer completes the overall look of the dress by using red fabric for the hem of the dress. This outfit is the perfect definition of art as it beautifully expresses the designer’s artistic imagination. The thoughtful attention to detail, including seamless finishing on the hem and precise stitches, acknowledges the level of artistry. Choosing a black ankle strap heel adorned with silver designs puts the final touch on this gorgeous look.

A close look at this style reveals a slight miss with the centred bow. While it is quite innovative, it is competing with the pleating design at the hem of the dress. ‘Too many cooks spoil the broth’ captures our review of this. The designer could have opted for the butterfly bow while the Ankara print flows seamlessly to the bottom or settled with the pleated design.

Aside from this, this modernised Ankara dress can serve as a stylish wear for religious activities or even family events.  It not only stole the spotlight but also generated a buzz among young women looking to define their unique taste through their wear.

Zinny’s excellent craftmanship is noticeable in all her designs and the Afro Tropical collection is not an exception. Releasing two distinct styles, she crowns it all with a simple yet modern Ankara dress. A unique feature of the dress is the pleated design placed strategically on prominent parts. It starts from underneath the puff sleeve and extends to the shoulder. To create a striking contrast, the designer uses purple fabric to form the pleated design around the waist of the dress. The upper part of the dress flows into the two-step flare with perfect stitches at the hem. The model’s pose brings out the pockets in the flare. On the flip side, without that pose, it is hard to detect the pocket.

If there is a way to style a comfy Ankara dress and still tick all the boxes, this outfit does it. It looks easy to wear and gives the model breathing space. The drop-down button, pleated designs, and two-step flare are constructed excellently.

Overall, the 2021 Afro Tropical collection sets a new standard for contemporary fashion. Aside from the innovative styles, the infusion of sustainable practices is visible in the quality of the materials used, especially the Ankara print. This collection aligns with the theme of culture fusion, as it explores creativity within the bounds of modern and traditional fabrics. Each outfit exudes modernity without taking away the richness of the African culture.

  • More than just clothing: Fashion as a form of personal style

More than just clothing: Fashion as a form of personal style

In this modern time, fashion as a form of self-expression has become of great value. Each outfit choice, whether designed consciously or unconsciously, reflects the personality, background or beliefs of the wearer or the designer. From bold fabric patterns and bright colours to minimalist designs and softened tones, fashion allows people to tell their unique stories however they want to.

At the essence of self-expression lies personal style, a person’s signature and way of interpreting fashion. Unlike trends that have different eras – they come and go, personal style remains a constant reflection of who you are, showing how your identity and values evolve with time.

Talk about fashion icons like Iris Apfel, whose flamboyant style has made her a global sensation. According to Elle Magazine, a Met Costume Institute show held in 2005, which featured Iris’ collection – “Rara Avis: The Irreverent Iris Apfel,” brought her to the attention of the broader audience. This was the first time that a single person’s wardrobe had been the subject of such a retrospective.

While promoting the show Iris mentioned, “Life is grey and dull, and you might as well have a little fun when you dress, and amuse people.” This statement reveals what fashion icon Iris Apfel thinks about fashion – a way to play dress up, have fun and amuse people. And this reveals her style as she is not afraid of her inner creativity.

Another notable icon who continually pushes the boundaries with her daring look on the red carpet is Rihanna. Her style involves merging high fashion with street style which evokes strength, sensuality and authenticity.

Or talk about Zendaya who also stands out for her ability to effortlessly switch between different styles. Going from the classic Hollywood glam to edgy and daring, which shows that personal style is dynamic.

Personal style does not only indicate your taste in fashion, it communicates something deeper than that. There is one popular Coco Chanel saying that goes, “Fashion fades, only style remains the same.” She stuck to one particular style which became popular as her signature look. Simplicity, elegance and comfort were the key elements of her iconic Black and White style.

Overall, fashion and personal style are connected, which gives individuals a platform to showcase their creativity and personality to the world.

In the same way, a carefully selected dress or a beautiful hairstyle can make you feel complete, personal style makes you feel seen, it doesn’t matter whether you choose to follow trends or blaze your own trail.

Fashion gurus like Iris Apfel, Rihanna, and Zendaya set a statement for us that embracing your personal style isn’t about fitting in but about standing out and expressing yourself in a unique way.

Speaking of fashion and personal style, a new fashion brand in the industry, changing the game and showing up with new designs and unfiltered creativity is “UniQ”, owned by the talented Ugochi peace Okeke.

The exceptional brand, UniQ has focused on creating timeless pieces that infuse cultural styles with modern trends.

Ugochi keeps leading the brand to a new height allowing it to evolve. As fashion icons seek more modern and stylish choices, UniQ stands out to represent both locally and on a global scale as a symbol of style and consciousness. The brand UniQ is not all about clothing, it’s about celebrating femininity and encouraging women to embrace their individuality and boldness.

Fuelled by a belief that fashion should reflect individuality, Ugochi carefully curates her collection to ensure it offers a distinct blend of contemporary elegance and cultural richness.

This article features a few of her designs from her recently released collection. And let’s take a look at a few of them. Starting with this first set.

Designed in a stunning two-piece, featuring a button-down shirt and a short, The Clara Set evokes a sense of feminine appeal. The Ankara fabric type used which features beautiful patterns of red, dark green and subtle yellow enhances the outfit’s chic and sophisticated look, making it a top pick for women looking to up their fashion game.

The sleeve of the shirt is designed uniquely – straight from the shoulders down and then with a beautiful puff just by the end, wrapped with an additional yellow crepe material, boosting the overall yellow undertone of the full outfit.

Aside from the unique design and tailoring of this outfit, the short looks too brief. For those with thicker thighs, it may not be very fitting and flattering. A longer version would do justice. Having this fit in an option of shorts or trousers to choose from would be preferable. But regardless, it is still a favourite.

You know they say good shoes take you to good places, so pair this outfit with a nice black kitten fashion boot to make a bold statement, a beautiful green kitten heel to match the colour of the outfit or a bright yellow sandal for a more casual summer-like vibe.

More ideal for informal events, like a casual night out with your man, a friend’s birthday party, or even brunch with your man. From casual to elegance, this set is a must-have for the fashion-forward ladies.

This second design is truly something. When thinking of ‘fashionable and trendy’, you should be thinking about this jumpsuit of pure perfection.

This one-piece outfit made from the famous Ankara Fabric fits slim and covers the arms and legs. The fabric features patterns in hues of red, black and dull yellow.

The standout design in this outfit is the black jacket-like design that covers the top of the jumpsuit. This jacket attached to the Ankara jumpsuit is made from a beautiful black silk fabric, to enhance its stylish appearance making it unique and high-fashion.

The silk jacket comes with a bold collar and a 3/4 sleeve type that further accentuates the sophisticated nature of the fit.

This jumpsuit is designed with the wearer, as a hidden zipper is provided at the back for easy wearability and comfort.

The idea of a silk jacket might not be ideal for everyone. The jacket is really pretty and suits the jumpsuit perfectly but it might not be an ideal choice for all wearers. Having the jacket as an option would be preferable. Letting the wearer alternate choices depending on the weather. When it’s a bit cold, the jacket would be a perfect option, and when it’s warm, jacket-off would work better.

In styling a jumpsuit like this, heels work best to bring the whole style together. Pair this fit with a high black stiletto and other fashion accessories like watches, a nice shade, rings and bangles and walk into any room looking like a million bucks.

The outfit is designed in different sizes, so you don’t have to worry about the fitting because all sizes are well accommodated. So, if you’re searching for the perfect fit for any occasion at all, this perfect Jumpsuit has got you covered. And last but not least on our review list is another stunning two-piece set.

This particular outfit is all shades of gorgeous. Every detail of this outfit stands out in a unique way. The melon puff sleeves give a dramatic look to the ensemble, evoking a sense of vintage elegance and they blend beautifully with the plain trousers promoting a balanced structure.

The square neckline evokes a classic look, which draws attention to the collarbone and elongates the neck giving a balanced and symmetrical appearance. This type of neckline looks flattering on several body types as it enhances the shoulders creating a more angular appearance.

Things are kept simple with the trousers so as not to do too much since the top already comes with its own flare, and this creates perfect harmony.

The prominent and visible collar bone as a result of the square neckline gives room for a statement jewellery piece which enhances the overall look of this outfit. A nice silver bold statement necklace can add a touch of glamour and sophistication, just something that sits above the neckline.

You know what they say about good hair making everything look better? The same goes for a good outfit as well. The right fit can completely transform your appearance and boost your confidence, whether you’re wearing making or not. I know the no-makeup gang would love this one.

However, this outfit looks quite monochromatic. An outfit like this with those statement-making sleeves, would look even better when combined with a different suitable coloured fabric to balance the look and style, making it even more iconic. A black corset-like design around the bodice would look perfect.

Overall, the collection shows how intentional Ugochi is in her designs. Tailoring her designs to meet the needs and choices of all fashionable women. From the two-piece collection that promotes a casual appearance, to the jumpsuit that gives a more formal and high-fashion style.

Ugochi made sure to present UniQ as more than just a fashion brand but a movement that inspires women to celebrate colour, express themselves, and not be afraid to switch between various fashion styles as there are numerous to choose from.

Noting that personal style is fluid, Ugochi presents her craft in a way that appeals to women in general. In using cultural fabric to create stunning designs, he empowers women to celebrate their heritage.

With each collection, Ugochi continuously reasserts her commitment to creating luxurious garments that enhance the style of women around the world with an interest in fashion. This makes UniQ an exceptional brand in the fashion world.

  • Rooomxix CEO Gbenga Adeyefa speaks on fashion, style, beauty

Rooomxix CEO Gbenga Adeyefa speaks on fashion, style, beauty

Fashion means different things to different people and so is beauty. While there is no absolute authority on what fashion entirely constitutes, there is a consensus of sorts that true style comes from an understanding of how to master basic beauty and fashion trends and tasks.

But in the opinion of Gbenga Adeyefa (Adeyefa Olugbenga Peter), the Chief Executive Officer of Rooomxix, a premium street wear fashion brand, the union of beauty and style give rise to fashion.

In a recent interview, he spoke on how the tree elements go hand in hand and how the divorce of one from the other may not entirely end in a good result.

He said fashion, beauty and style all work hand in hand. Fashion, beauty, and style, according to him, are three best friends.

They can stand on their own but they are better together because they complement one another.

He stated that fashion is not completely meaningful without beauty and style. Beauty enhances fashion and style and beauty too is incomplete without good fashion.

According to him him: “Fashion is what you wear, style is how you wear it while beauty is an intangible quality and also a measure of how well one’s style is pulled off.

“For me, being fashionable is more than just wearing clothes. Whenever I see a person wearing a very eye-catching fashion piece depending on the style , it can give me an idea of the kind of personality the person has.

“I see fashion as a creative way of expressing who we are and the creative idea you think about.

“To be considered fashionable for me comes down to you being able to stand out in your fashion pieces and rocking it with swag and confidence.”

Exhibiting his deep knowledge of the fashion world and the elements of it, Adeyefa averred that street wear fashion is not a fashion trend.

“In fashion, events of the past and anticipation of the future influence trends. Fashion shows which are usually set up to forecast future styles as well as to inform present customer inclinations is integral to influence trends.

“In some cases, consumers also influence trends. That is, the next may not always be spotted on the runway. Sometimes, it can also be spotted on the streets or even social media.

“Rooomxix was quick to react to the street wear wave in Nigeria. It is most times assumed that street wear is a trend but it is an uprising department in fashion.

“We have been able to build our business model to adapt and further facilitate the transition of street wear from an underground movement to mainstream,” he affirmed.

Rooomxix was established in 2018, primarily to establish Africa’s presence in the global fashion scene as a leader in the industry and create a fashion universe that serves a very large fashion community.

“At Rooomxix, our primary product line is street wear retail. We house a variety of brands, locally and internationally in our flagship stores and online store.

“With the intention of bridging the gap between both markets, our product line is dedicated to promoting self expression and self awareness in fashion-conscious people,” Adeyefa stated.

  • African Fashion Review: A Global Movement In Style

African Fashion Review: A Global Movement In Style

There was a time when fashion designers relied solely on glossy magazines and exclusive runway shows to get noticed. Back then, breaking into the fashion industry was like finding a needle in a haystack, especially for Nigerian designers. The gatekeepers of the global fashion scene were far away, and without major industry connections, most local talents struggled to make waves beyond their city borders.

But then, the magic of social media happened. Suddenly, your fashion brand didn’t need a billboard on the Lagos Third Mainland Bridge or an endorsement from the latest Nollywood star (although, that doesn’t hurt). In walked Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and all other top social media platforms ready to disrupt the entire industry like an uninvited guest at a grand event. One who somehow makes the night unforgettable.

The power of social media makes fashion a revolution. Designers, influencers, and brands harness this energy to craft narratives and engage with their audiences in real-time.

In today’s digital age, social media serves as the ultimate runway. It is a space where fashion is democratised and anyone with a smartphone can become a style icon. Major brands have recognised this shift and are leveraging platforms to showcase their latest collections. They engage with fans, build communities and shape emerging trends.

With just a swipe or a scroll, we can dive into the world of haute couture or streetwear from the comfort of our homes. The most successful brands curate their online presence with the same precision they use in designing their garments. They create visually stunning campaigns, share behind-the-scenes moments, and collaborate with influencers who resonate with their target audience. This strategy expands their reach and also builds a loyal following, eager to embrace the latest trends.

This wave of digital influence isn’t limited to global powerhouses; it is making a significant impact on African fashion brands as well. Today, creative Indigenous designers are gaining visibility like never before. The bold prints of Ankara fabric and the elegant draping of the Kente designs are attracting all eyes. These brands are taking social media by storm, showcasing their unique artistry and cultural narratives to a global audience.

Every post becomes an opportunity to celebrate African craftsmanship, creativity, and style, reaching fashion enthusiasts all over the world. As these brands build their online presence, they challenge the stereotypes often associated with African fashion. They present a rich textile design that is contemporary, stylish, and undeniably chic.

Fashion and style are products of the culture in which they are produced, reflecting local customs and cultural history. Traditional clothing serves as a mirror to society’s cultural heritage, which influences the materials and textiles that make up contemporary fashion.

As Cletus Opara aptly puts it, fashion is not just about personal expression; it is a vibrant response to our culture and environment. With each colourful piece of traditional attire and the clean lines of modern designs, there are stories and histories of its origins.

Cletus Opara is the founder of the Chic City Brand. His designs seamlessly blend the African heritage with contemporary style, making them just as desirable as the top international brands that flood our feeds. Cletus understands the movements of the fashion scenery, and he crafts pieces that catch the eye and also compel you to hit that “purchase” button. Each design tells a story, igniting a desire to own a piece of art that resonates with your identity and fashion aspirations.

Cletus’s latest masterpiece, the Enalegwe Collection, is an array of African-inspired designs made in very beautiful colours that attract every classy woman. The collection showcases neatly tailored and sophisticated designs in Ankara, Cotton, and Chiffon, promoting classic styles and cultural authenticity.

The Enalegwe Collection stands as a testament to Cletus’s artistic vision. The collection’s name, “Enalegwe,” reflects hints of the aurora and rainbow in the darkness. It symbolises Cletus’s obsession with the future and his relentless pursuit of self-improvement.

Cletus Opara and the Chic City Brand truly understand the art of combining quality fabric with unique African-inspired designs, creating one-of-a-kind pieces that complement any wardrobe. These creations are more than ordinary clothes; they are expressions of identity, creativity, and cultural pride.

This outfit is one from the Enalegwe Collection. It shows off a bright and bold use of colour, a typical characteristic of modern African fashion, especially with the Ankara fabric.

The warm orange and teal green hues create a lively contrast that is eye-catching and appealing, drawing attention and making a statement.

The top features a flattering peplum style, which highlights the waist and gives a stylish structure. The puffed sleeves add a fun touch to the overall silhouette, contributing to a feminine and chic look that is trendy.

The fitted pants create a sleek line that balances the volume of the top nicely and ensures a polished appearance. The overall outfit looks tailored, enhancing the figure while providing comfort.

The traditional patterns embedded in the Ankara fabric add a cultural touch to the ensemble. The print is detailed and well-placed, making sure it attracts attention without overwhelming the design.

This choice embraces cultural heritage and also fits with current fashion trends making it relatable to many people.

Subtle makeup, just like the one the model has on, complements the outfit really well. Simple jewellery allows the outfit to stand out while enhancing overall elegance. However, adding a bolder accessory could have introduced a fun element, considering the lively nature of the outfit. Accessories can elevate the look, especially in a fashion-forward setting.

Talk about footwear. The type of footwear you pair with an outfit decides the type of vibe it gives off. So, to look classy and sophisticated, a nice black heel should be considered. While a chic and casual vibe would need pretty platform sandals.

The peplum is indeed flattering, but care should be taken to ensure that the proportion between the top and the pants is well-balanced. If the peplum is too big, it might overwhelm the wearer’s frame. Additionally, providing variations in sleeve length could also enhance versatility, making the piece suitable for different weather.

Overall, this design by Cletus Opara effectively combines modern styles with cultural elements, making it a standout choice for today’s fashion-conscious women.

The bright colours and flattering shape are key features that fit really well with current trends, ensuring this piece could become a favourite in many wardrobes.

This design showcases a contemporary outfit that combines modernity with traditional African aesthetics, particularly through the use of the notable vibrant Ankara fabric. The outfit features a fitted top with wide sleeves, which adds a trendy touch that also provides comfort and ease of movement.

The colour palette is striking. A mix of yellow and purple hues, that draw attention and highlight the intricate patterns typical of African print fabrics.

The bold use of colour is well-executed, as it reflects a cultural richness while still maintaining a fashionable look that is suitable for various occasions. However, the selection of patterns, although vibrant, could benefit from a more coordinated design approach, as the varied shapes and bursting yellow colour may overwhelm some viewers.

The trousers are tailored to complement the top, providing a balanced look that lengthens the legs. The loose fit of the trousers aligns with current fashion trends that appeal to a wide range of audiences.

Moreover, the choice of accessories can totally elevate the whole look. One thing about this particular fit is that you can choose to dress it up or down depending on your preference or the occasion.

Pairing this look with simple sandals will allow the outfit to shine without overshadowing it, and this is if you choose to dress it down.

For added flare and elegance, a nice high heel with perfect drop earrings that add just the right amount of glamour would do the trick.

Since the outfit is already quite colourful, minimalistic makeup should be your go-to. You do not need to do too much because the fit itself attracts all eyes.

This design effectively blends traditional with modern elements, resulting in a unique and stylish outfit. The overall execution demonstrates a thoughtful approach to modern African fashion.

This ensemble reflects the potential for such designs to gain wider recognition in the fashion industry, showcasing the beauty and versatility of African-inspired clothing.

When looking to elevate your wardrobe, the Enalegwe Collection should be your first stop. Each piece is designed with conscious fashion in mind, allowing you to feel good and look even better about what you wear.

This collection features trendy and beautiful jumpsuits made from high-quality fabrics that stand the test of time. Whether at work, home, or play, the Enalegwe Collection is perfect for every occasion.

Cletus has thoughtfully included a variety of sizes, including plus-size and petite clothing, ensuring that every woman can find her fit and style.
