  • A review On Simbena 2022 Collections: The Confidence Catalyst

A review On Simbena 2022 Collections: The Confidence Catalyst

Have you ever dressed up for an event and found yourself constantly visiting the restroom, sneaking peeks at your reflection ― to confirm that you look absolutely fantastic? You catch a glimpse of yourself in a mirror, and suddenly, it’s like the world is your stage. There’s an unmistakable magic in those moments when you slip into an outfit that makes you feel like you could conquer the world. Fashion has this uncanny ability to elevate our mood and boost our confidence — often more than we even realise.

It’s not just about looking good, though. The legendary Belgian designer Diane von Furstenberg, best known for her wrap dresses, once said, ‘When you look good, you feel good’. Anyone who’s ever slipped into an outfit that fits like a glove right can vouch for the truth in that statement. That boost of confidence doesn’t just come from the way you look, but how you feel when you wear something that truly speaks to who you are. You walk a little taller, smile a little wider, and yes, maybe even check yourself out on every reflective surface you pass ― it’s more like a ripple effect.

Fashion, as you already know, isn’t just about looks or attractiveness; it’s a psychological game-changer. You’ve probably heard of “power dressing.” But as dramatic as this may sound, it has little or nothing to do with the sharp suit, the towering heels, or the perfectly tailored trousers. Rather, it’s about how powerful, confident and strong these clothes make you feel clothes make you feel. It’s like feeling super-ordinary even in a pair of old jeans and striped shirts.

Similarly, there’s something about adding a spark to your mood with colours. For example, slipping into a sleek black dinner dress could give you that million-dollar look, or donning a bright yellow jacket could turn your mood around even on the greyest of days. Clothes have this magical power to trigger emotions, elevate our energy, and even transform the way we carry ourselves. And no one embodies this more than Simeon Benjamin Akpan.

The artistic mind behind the Afrocentric fashion label “SimBena,” Simeon had watched his mother create custom garments in their small home, and that early exposure ignited a deep love for the liveliness and beauty of African prints. But Simeon wasn’t content with just preserving tradition; instead, he took this craftmanship into modernising these prints, making them vibrant, and accessible to the world.

In 2018, he launched SimBena with a mission to celebrate joy, inclusivity, and, most importantly, empowerment. Each of his collections goes beyond fabric and colours to create a sense of happiness for the wearer. Wearing this African-inspired fashion brand’s designs is like wrapping yourself in positivity, freedom, and power. The clothes speak one loud and clear message: ‘I am here, and I am proud of who I am’.

At the centre of all of Simeon’s fashion, there’s an art. And like every art, it affects us in ways we do not realise. Like a canvas, it expresses the wearer’s mood, personality, and identity. Even Yves Saint Laurent, with his timeless wisdom in classic fashion comments that ’Fashions fade, style is eternal’. In other words, the power of style lies in its ability to affect us from the inside out.

The 2022 Confidence Catalyst Collection is proof that SimBena’s clothes don’t just look good —they make you feel good because they allow you to be authentic, creating a sense of responsibility and inclusivity.

This collection created a nostalgia for the good old days. Remember what Saint Laurent said about styles being immortal? These giant sleeves seal that statement.

Puffy sleeves: the sheer volume ― the drama! Wearing them is like having your own set of built-in airbags — made for style and safety. With a flick of the wrist, these sleeves can go from ‘I just stepped out of a Jane Austen novel’ to ‘I’m here to overthrow medieval royalty’. Here, every turn and twist speaks of elevated class.

Balloon sleeves are unapologetically bold. They demand attention, create presence, and sometimes, practically need their own seat. Just know that whenever you try on a dress or blouse with puffy sleeves, you’re signing up for an adventure. It’s like asking ― ‘Would you look like a shy bride preparing for an arranged engagement or like you’re about to gate-crash a party because the celebrant is your pal?’ Now, that’s the thrill!

    Let’s dissect each piece slowly.

From left to right, we see a boisterous display of colours and patterns. While the pink and blue fabric evokes a bright and bubbly spirit, the green and orange print brings warmth and freshness. Aside from the symbolic theories that these shades possess, we are also thrilled by the absolute display of craftsmanship. Originality at its core, the first design accentuates the designer’s creativity. The winged collar is nothing like we’ve seen before. These bold neckbands are not just products of thoughtfulness; they are like ornaments of grace on the wearer’s neck.

The plain material used in creating this eye-catching collar looks like crêpe, making it a perfect combo element, especially because of the silky vibe it gives the overall design. However, we’d suggest that sturdy materials like gum stay should have been sewn alongside the crêpe fabric, creating a more impressive look, even after it had gone through the laundry.

The pleated skirt-like bodice is simply an added advantage to the wearer’s appearance, especially regarding movement. Pleated skirts have this magical ability to make you feel like a graceful dancer, even if your last coordinated move had been a disaster. With each step, they fan out just enough to give that “I’m effortlessly stylish” vibe. And let’s be honest, pleats make your simple walk look like you’re gliding down a runway ― or, in some cases, dodging puddles with elegance.

But just when we thought we were done with the puffy sleeves, we noticed we missed some details. Commonly referred to as the bishop sleeves, these voluminous hand wraps puff up at the shoulder and then taper gracefully at the wrist, giving you the look of a stylish high priestess ready to bless the runway. After all, they have something to do with the bishop.

Need to gesture wildly to make a point? These sleeves will follow suit, billowing in agreement while adding an extra flair to everything from dinner conversations to work presentations. And don’t forget, bishop sleeves are the perfect shield when it gets chilly, as they trap warmth exactly where you need it most.

For the aesthetics, we are delighted with the seams, even the buttons make a seamless blend with the fabric. Moreover, the textile shares the stage with the famous Kente. From a distance, one could have easily assumed Simeon’s choice of clothing was inspired by the iconic Ghana Wax, except that this comes with a chicer colour.

Kente patterns are deeply connected to African history, particularly among the Akan people of Ghana. Each design and colour in Kente hold a special meaning. Often linked to important stories, events, or personal qualities, Kente is more than just a beautiful fabric; it carries messages about culture, wisdom, and recognition. Some patterns represent values like “Nkyinkyim”, which means adaptability or being ready for change, while others celebrate historical moments or honour important people. Somewhere in between, fabrics like the Kente have a way of connecting the wearer to his/her ancestry. Interestingly, we may not be one of SimBena’s models but we share the bond.

‘Nothing can go wrong with a slit dress’.

With a sleek opening along the side, front, or back, slit dresses are all about effortless charm and movement. Whether the opening is in front, at the side or back of the dress, the message can never be compromised ―for movement.

What’s great is that slit dresses work for almost any occasion ― let’s not forget to add its versatility, too. Pair one with heels, and steal the show on a red carpet, looking taller and more poised. Throw on a pair of white canvas or sandals, and suddenly it’s a chill, day-out kind of look that still feels polished. And the materials! Satin, silk, Ankara, a slit dress adapts.

A contracted version of the large bishop sleeves in the first design, save for the high-neck blouse and ruffled sleeves, this piece would have passed for a milk-made dress in Ankara prints ― another display of artistry. Secured with invisible bands to reveal long arms is an outright show of sophistication.

The slim-fit bodice spotlights the wearer’s figure, revealing enough skin for the eyes of the beholder. By the way, what harm can a little playful flirt cause yet holding on to glamour?

Frankly, we do not mind the designer’s depth of the opening of this dress. Our only concern is the position. Perhaps a side slit would have taken care of the bothers of a wearer who isn’t too comfortable showing that much flesh. And since it comes in an A-shape pattern, no one would notice if there is an opening there in the first place.

Also, we would have opted for more elevated footwear like a pair of block heels, high—heel sandals or stilettoes. But if we must come low, some matching sneakers would be just the right answer.

In all, here’s a gentle reminder that the next time you slip into that outfit that makes you feel like you could rule the world, always remember it’s not about the design or designer ― but about YOU and your confidence.

  • Omotayo Durodola: Day I discovered my friend was impersonating me

Omotayo Durodola: Day I discovered my friend was impersonating me

Omotayo Durodola is the Chief Executive Officer, New Prestige Skin Care and Spa. She has more than 20 years experience in the manufacturing sector where she has been involved in marketing body cream, soaps and organic herbals. For the entrepreneur it has been a tough journey but she was determined to succeed against the many challenges encountered. In this interview with BUSOLA ODUGBESAN, she goes down memory lane to talk about her experiences, working with natural products, author, talk show host, encounter with the former Minister for Works and Housing and how she has once been impersonated by a friend as well as life as a television personality.

What is the secret behind your beauty and looking natural?

Beauty basically depends on the individual and the efforts you put in. In addition, I would say that, if you can clear your thoughts, care for your skin and engage in some light exercise routine like skipping, taking a walk amongst other things. They all help to make you continue to look nice and young. Also going natural and using natural products makes the skin glow in unique ways.

As someone who loves fashion, what you are the things you do to keep you going?

When I first launched this beauty business 20 years ago, I was still quite young and I never once deviated from my principles. I adore fashion, but there are many things I cannot do, including being completely naked, wearing clothing that reveals my body, or going half-naked. Those who know me well will attest that I am disciplined when it comes to dressing in a particular way, but I won’t change because of fashion.

What makes your products and services unique?

My products are distinctive since I produce them myself. I work basically with products that you can see in the kitchen and fruits. I use palm oil, palm kernel oil as well as things like salt for soap. They are all natural components.

Where did you get the inspiration for the things that you do?

I have worked as a studio makeup artist at Lagos Television (LTV8) for the past 18 years as part of my service, and I currently host a show there called “Oge Ara” that viewers also watch. I have also written more than three novels as an author.

What have been the challenges so far?

I don’t foresee any major obstacles, but l know that as humans we are not perfect. I would also say that working with dishonest people occasionally gets me depressed. Your employees or co-workers, even close friend might betray you.

Have you been able to get government assistance for your product?

Certainly not, however, I provide individuals with free seminars about what I do on my own to the public. However, I’ll never get over the fact that a minister I worked for gave me his business card as a means of saying thanks for my service and promised to assist me. On that fateful day, l went to the office, and my bag that contained the card got stolen. The terrible part of this is that the person who took my bag went so far as to pretend to be me when she reached out to the minister. She later called me and confessed that she stole my bag, and threatened to kill me. She claimed that no amount of reporting would convince her to return the card. I had the chance to receive assistance from the government at that time, but I lost the chance since my bag was stolen by a friend.

Fortunately, I ran into the Minister at a gathering, and I told him what had transpired. He said that he had helped the person who impersonated me in various ways and he promised to get hold of the culprit. I believe that if my bag hadn’t been taken, the government would have given me the chance to empower other people around me. Every time I think back on that occurrence, I feel bad, would be in so much pain.

    What was your happiest moment?

That was the time that I worked for Babatunde Fashola. Then, I applied his makeup whenever he wants to appear on television at LTV 8. I did his makeup prior to, throughout, and even after serving as the governor of Lagos State. Doing that for him made me happy every time. Apart from him, I have worked with other famous people, including Akinwumi Ambode, the former governor of Lagos state.

What do you do when you are free?

I am always at work, training people but any time I am free you see me in house with my family or in church. I am a devoted person, being a member of the choir.

What advice do you have for start-ups?

If they want to be successful, they should work hard. Don’t get engaged in what you don’t learn or have passion for, be diligent in everything you do. Sometimes, it’s okay to fail, but never dwell in that failure. Keep moving until success comes your way.

What advice do you have for the government?

The government should provide assistance to those who work hard, be it a start-up or individuals like us. Government support is necessary for people like us who sell natural products to expand our businesses. If they assist us, we will also assist in hiring more people, create employment, as well as offer them free seminars on what we do.

  • Glow in signature style

    Glow in signature style

African fabrics, motifs, designs, costumes and adornment often provide a vast resource for our designers. Interestingly, they are making waves across the globe with contemporary styles that are unique.

One key element is the use of aso-oke, Dutch wax, print, kente and the Ankara which provides a huge inspiration for creative expression in terms of colours, embellishments with structures that are modern yet exuberant.

These expressions came alive recently at the African Fashion Week in Lagos where a number of designers showcased their brands featuring casual wear, evening gowns and contemporary outfits that can be worn to the office.

Adire Ooduwa, aso-oke by Minaladi, Demi, Glue by Nasir, Kijipa, St Ange, Lordiva, Modesty Signature and much more featured.

They set the runway on fire with the audience asking for more as they displayed raw creativity at its best, a splash of super colours, haute couture and great finishing. Also exciting was a collection of swimwear made with African inspiration and fabrics.
