JUST IN: PDP’s Ajayi withdraws Supreme Court suit against Aiyedatiwa

Agboola Ajayi, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the November 16, 2024 Ondo State election, has withdrawn his appeal at the Supreme Court challenging the victory of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ajayi, who served as Deputy Governor in the first term of the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, was the main challenger to Governor Aiyedatiwa in the last governorship race that featured 16 other candidates.

In a letter to the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, the PDP flag bearer confirmed that although an appeal had been filed on his behalf, he had resolved- after consultations with family, associates, party members and legal team – to discontinue the case.

“After careful deliberation, we have reached a consensus that the appeal should be withdrawn, and I hereby so do. Having served as former Deputy Governor and legislator, my foremost commitment is to good governance and peaceful coexistence in Ondo State and Nigeria.

“In this spirit, I extend my heartfelt wishes to His Excellency Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa as he leads our state, and I remain dedicated to contributing positively to the state and national development,” Ajayi stated in the copy of the letter dated September 16, 2025.

The PDP candidate also pledged support for Governor Aiyedatiwa’s administration, signalling a major political truce in the state.

The Akure Division of the Court of Appeal had dismissed Ajayi’s suit challenging Aiyedatiwa’s re-election, as well as that of Deputy Governor Olayide Owolabi Adelami, over alleged name discrepancies.

The appellate court ruled that Mr Ajayi lacked the locus standi to pursue the matter, describing the case as statute-barred.

It also held that the cause of action arose on May 20, 2024, when the APC candidate submitted their nomination forms to INEC, but the suit was not filed until June 7, outside the 14-day constitutional window.

The court upheld the earlier decision of the Election Petition Tribunal, dismissed the appeal, and awarded N2 million in costs against Mr Ajayi in favour of each of the four respondents.

With withdrawal, the legal tussle over the 2024 governorship election in the state appears settled, consolidating Governor Aiyedatiwa’s mandate.

Analysts have also said the withdrawal marks the end of one of the most keenly contested post-election disputes in recent history in the state.

Governor Aiyedatiwa had repeatedly extended an ‘olive branch’ to the PDP’s Ajayi and other opposition parties candidates who contested against him in theast guber poll.

  • Tinubu’s reforms revolutionary, says ex-Speaker Dogara

Tinubu’s reforms revolutionary, says ex-Speaker Dogara

    • ‘Ensure transparency in tax reform implementation’

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reform programme is a revolution, the most far-reaching in many decades of Nigeria’s nationhood, a former House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara said yesterday.

According to him, the President inherited an economy in comatose, which needed such “bold and courageous” decisions to pull it back from the brink.

On assumption of office on May 29, 2023, the President removed subsidy on petrol and scrapped multiple exchange rates, the twin economic policies that have defined his administration.

Dogara said: “This is a legacy that would impact generations after us and cement President Tinubu’s place in Nigeria’s history as the undisputed most consequential economic reformer of our time”.

He spoke during the maiden Distinguished Parliamentarian Lecture, organised by the House of Representatives Press Corps at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.

His lecture, titled:  “Navigating Tax Reform in Nigeria: Insights on President Tinubu’s Policies”, examined the origins, scope, and expected impact of the tax reforms encapsulated in the Nigeria Tax Act (NTA) 2025 and related legislation.

“By the time President Tinubu took office, the economic debris of the nation had become too conspicuous to be ignored. About N22.7 trillion had been printed and injected into the economy in the name of Ways and Means, thereby destroying the value of the naira in our pockets.”

“Some of the foreign loans had been procured to help strengthen the naira, a measure that could only be sustained by voodoo economics.”

“From day one, it was clear something urgent, nay revolutionary, must be done to prevent our economy from imploding.”

He described President Tinubu’s sweeping tax reforms as the most audacious overhaul of Nigeria’s fiscal framework in decades, urging the government to ensure transparency and sustained implementation to secure public trust.

Dogara outlined the key provisions of the reforms, which consolidated 16 federal tax statutes into four principal Acts:

Nigeria Tax Act (NTA) 2025: Consolidates multiple tax laws into a unified framework, expands the tax base to cover digital services and virtual currencies, and introduces a 15 per cent minimum effective tax rate for large companies.

Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA) 2025: Modernises assessment, collection, and compliance rules, introduces simplified filing for low-income earners, mandates the use of unified Taxpayer Identification Numbers (Tax IDs), and establishes a Tax Ombudsman’s Office.

Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act (NRSEA) 2025: Establishes the Nigeria Revenue Service to replace the FIRS, with expanded powers and mandatory transparency reporting.

Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Act (JRBEA) 2025: Harmonises federal-state revenue sharing and coordinates dispute resolution through a Tax Appeal Tribunal and Ombudsman.

Dogara said the reforms, which would be fully operational by January, are designed to simplify Nigeria’s complex tax regime, broaden the tax net, encourage compliance, and align domestic rules with global standards.

Quoting the report of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform, chaired by Taiwo Oyedele, Dogara said the reforms were conceived to “protect the poor, empower businesses, encourage investment, and ensure fairness in society.”

Among the reliefs introduced are exemptions for small companies with turnover of N100 million or less, rent reliefs for salaried workers, tax credits for upstream oil operators, and full income tax exemption for individuals earning N800,000 or less annually.

The reforms also abolished multiple sectorial levies, replacing them with a single four per cent development levy, while new provisions bring digital gains, crypto assets, and foreign exchange earnings into the tax net.

Dogara reflected on the five per cent fuel surcharge captured in the new Act, saying it was not a new tax but a restatement of an existing provision in the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) Act, 2007.

He said the surcharge would not apply to household energy products, such as kerosene, cooking gas, or compressed natural gas, and would only take effect after the Finance minister issues an official gazette order.

“This safeguard eliminates recklessness and ensures timing and economic conditions are carefully considered,” he added

Despite applauding the boldness of the reforms, Dogara highlighted challenges of uncertainty in interpretation, technological readiness, skilled manpower, and short-term compliance costs.

“The drive towards full digitalisation, from e-invoicing to automated tax filings, promises efficiency but demands a significant upgrade in our digital capabilities and cyber security,” he said.

The former Speaker said businesses must invest in systems and training to adapt.

He emphasised that a successful tax reform requires public trust.

“True tax reform is not about raising rates, but about raising trust. When citizens can see where their naira goes, they are proud to give it,” he said.

Dogara urged the government to ensure revenue raised through taxation is transparently deployed to build roads, power industries, and improve hospitals and schools.

“Let this reform be a pact between the government and the private sector, a promise that if we contribute diligently, the government will deploy those resources responsibly,” he said.

He called on President Tinubu to ensure sustained implementation, as the reforms could cement his place in history.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, commended the tax reforms, describing them as a decisive step toward simplifying compliance, broadening the tax net, and easing the burden on ordinary Nigerians.

Abbas, who was represented by the House Spokesperson and Chairman, Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Akin Rotimi, hailed the establishment of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms and the harmonisation of tax collection.

He said they are “a significant intervention that promises to re-engineer our tax administration architecture for greater efficiency, fairness, and transparency.”

Abbas said the National Assembly devoted time to diligently process the far-reaching legislation transmitted by the executive through robust debates, stakeholder consultations, and committee work.

“Indeed, what we have before us is one of the most significant steps of building our Fourth Republic, with the greatest potential to transform our economy and fiscal institutions,” he added.

The Speaker said the 10th House is committed to open governance and citizen engagement.

He alluded to innovations, such as live streaming, community sessions, and digital portals that have made legislative processes more transparent and inclusive.

Abbas reaffirmed the legislature’s support for press freedom, outlining 10 key principles that should guide the media in strengthening democracy.

These include telling the right stories that promote unity and peace, rejecting fake news, exposing mistakes in governance, ensuring objectivity in reporting, and holding public officials accountable.

He said “press freedom in Nigeria is not negotiable,” urging journalists to partner the legislature to promote transparency, protect democracy, and safeguard human rights.

The Speaker praised the House of Representatives Press Corps for convening the lecture, and lauded the inaugural guest lecturer, former Speaker Dogara, as a statesman whose insight would provide intellectual grounding to the discourse on fiscal reforms.

“As we reflect today, let us remain focused on the bigger picture, building a Nigeria where taxation supports enterprise, strengthens equity, protects the vulnerable, and funds the aspirations of our people,” Abbas said.

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) reaffirmed its commitment to press freedom and called for a stronger collaboration between the media and tax authorities in deepening public understanding of fiscal reforms.

Special Assistant to the FIRS Chairman on Tax Policy, Mr. Olufemi Olarinde, who represented the Executive Chairman, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, acknowledged the historic role of the press as the “Fourth Estate of the Realm.”

He said its influence on public opinion makes it indispensable to the success of Nigeria’s economy and tax reforms.

Olarinde urged journalists to go beyond surface reporting by acquainting themselves with the new tax laws, insisting that effective communication of reforms can only come from deep understanding.

“In Latin, we say nemo dat quod non habet, you cannot give what you do not have. If we must speak and enlighten the public about these reforms, then it is important we first understand them ourselves,” Olarinde said.

Troops of the Nigerian Army have recorded another round of success in their amplified onslaught against violent non-state actors across the country.

Yesterday, a highly reliable Army source revealed  the killing of three terrorists and the arrest of a notorious commander of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)/ Eastern Security Network(ESN), Ifeanyi Okorienta (aka Gentle de Yahoo).

Arms and ammunition, mobile phones, military and police uniforms, and a German flag were recovered from his hideout.

Ten motorcycles and a workshop where stolen vehicles were dismantled and sold were seen at the scene. They were destroyed by the troops.

Okorienta’s name hit the social media recently after he recorded and posted a video of three of his followers, who he shot dead for allegedly stealing telephones from stranded passengers.

The military source said: “The operation led to the recovery of one English pistol, 120 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, 25 rounds of 7.62mm NATO, one cartridge, six mobile phones, military and police uniforms, and a German flag.

Troops also uncovered a workshop where stolen vehicles were dismantled for resale, in addition to destroying 10 motorcycles found at the scene.”

An investigative journalist. Babajide Otitoju , gave further insight on how Gentle de Yahoo was captured.

Otitoju said on TVC’s Journalists Hangout that the troops went to his IPOB/ ESN commander’s hideout in a highly coded form in order not to arouse suspicion.

His words: “To achieve the element of surprise, troops opted to trek for nearly four hours through rough terrain before arriving at the target location in the early hours of the morning.

“On arrival, the soldiers discreetly surrounded the compound housing ‘Gentle de Yahoo” and his fighters. However, the terrorists who were in the ceiling or rooftop opened fire, prompting troops to return fire..

“But when the troops noticed that those inside the ceiling didn’t want to come down, they had no choice but to set the building ablaze.

“Once the building was on fire,  two females and three males jumped out and attempted to escape but the Army opened fire.

“There were still three people left on the roof or ceiling who failed to come down. One of them was “Gentle’s” second-in-command, but he eventually jumped down and scaled the wall, but the troops fired at him and killed him. Two females who were with them were also killed as well as two males.’’

The  military  source also   said that  troops  “  recorded notable operational breakthroughs in Katsina State, neutralising two terrorists in separate encounters, and recovered an AK-47 rifle, ammunition, and a motorcycle.’’

In Benue State,  he revealed that ‘’troops neutralised one violent extremist, seizing a mobile phone and assorted charms.

In August, two terrorist commanders, Mahmud Usman and Mahmud al-Nigeri’ were arrested in a targeted operation by operatives.

Usman was described as a leader of the al-Qaida-linked faction Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina fi Biladis Sudan, popularly known as Ansaru.  Al-Nigeri  is said to be   associated with the emergent Mahmuda network in the  Northcentral.

Both of them are facing terrorism charges at the Abuja Federal High Court. Usman was jailed  15 years for admitting his involvement in illegal mining and using the proceeds to fund terror activities.

The military source also explained that five of the kidnap victims were rescued in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State, five in Kukasheka Ward,   Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, and two in Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State.

According to him, the  11 suspects were arrested in different locations in Benue, Kogi, and Kaduna states for armed robbery, gunrunning, and violent extremist activities.

He added that 40  cattle rustled in Plateau State were recovered and returned to their owners.

  • Presidency, APC slam Atiku over hunger, hardship alarm

Presidency, APC slam Atiku over hunger, hardship alarm

    • ‘Ex-VP’s low score for Fed Govt out of touch with positive development’

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar yesterday came under fire over his warning that revolution is imminent due to hunger and hardship in the country.

Dismissing the alarm as a product of outdated thinking, the Presidency and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) said Atiku is out of touch with the reality.

“Atiku and his party are stuck in the past, fixated on doomsday scenarios and revolutionary rhetoric,” the Presidency said in a statement by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

He said while the country is making progress under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, it is curious that what Atiku can decipher is imaginary gloom.

Onanuga added: “Talk is cheap. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and his handlers are clearly out of touch with the positive developments unfolding in our country.

“Their claim that hunger is ravaging Nigeria, and their comparison of our situation to the unrest in France before the 1789 Revolution or the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, is grossly misleading.”

READ ALSO: Five fun ways to spark children’s love for reading

Also berating Atiku for making a reckless statement, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, said only the former vice president sees hopelessness where every Nigerian sees hope.

Atiku, 2023 presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the arrowhead of the opposition coalition that adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as platform, alleged that the Tinubu administration has not made impact in two years.

He said if the PDP government under which Atiku served had laid a good foundation and avoided corruption, the country would have been a better place.

Incidentally, on the same day that Atiku made the claim on hunger, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) released the Consumer Protection Index (CPI), which shows that due to rapidly dropping food prices, inflation had declined for the fifth consecutive time. It is now 20.12 per cent.

    Revolution looms, Atiku warns

Atiku, who alerted the country to an impending revolution, decried the increasing spate of hunger among the underprivileged poor and downtrodden.

He said in a statement by his spokesman, Paul Ibe, that while the primary objective of  any government is the security and welfare of the citizens, the masses are progressively wallowing in misery and poverty under the administration.

Although the former vice president did not elaborate on the kind of revolution that is looming, he warned that the situation engenders an increasingly progressive propensity for criminalities, including high-wire fraud, terrorism, kidnapping, cultism, drug addiction and ritual sacrifice.

He recalled that the most violent socio-political eruptions and revolutions all over the world had often been powered by pervasive hunger and unbearable material conditions, especially the paradox of squalor amid plenty.

Atiku, who called for ‘national reflection,’ alluded to the French Revolution, the 1917 Russian Revolution and the Arab Spring in which a young man caught in the maelstrom of unbearable frustration set himself ablaze,  leading to violent socio-political eruptions in Tunisia,  Middle-East and North Africa.

He added: “Back home in Nigeria, it may not be out of place to argue that even the  “ENDSARS” protest was fuelled by the traumatising frustration of hunger and  insensitivity on the part of the government.”

Atiku lamented that two years after assuming power, there are no signs that the government is capable of addressing the severe hunger staring the poor in the face.

He said: “Whatever reform the Tinubu government might claim to be undertaking, the point remains that food insecurity is a daily occurrence.

“There is no government worth its salt that does not  place priority on the welfare and security of the people.”

Atiku said since reforms are made for citizens and not the other way round, the reforms of the administration should have a human face.

He stressed: “Whether the present powers accept it or not, the reality of our existence is that the poor are increasingly dying of hunger while majority of the poor exists at the mercy of the ill-advised policies of this government.

    Atiku wrong, says Presidency

However, Onanuga said Atiku offered a subjective analysis, pointing out that Nigerians are already savouring the bold reforms.

He drew attention to the data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), which paints a different picture from Atiku’s claims.

The presidential aide said inflation had declined for five consecutive months, while the country recently posted a record trade surplus, with non-oil exports contributing nearly equally to the trade balance at a 48:52 per cent ratio compared to crude oil.

Onanuga added that Nigeria’s foreign reserves, which stood at $32 billion when President Tinubu assumed office — much of it encumbered — had risen to almost $42 billion after clearing more than $7 billion in arrears, including $800 million owed to airlines.

He said: “Under President Tinubu, Nigeria is recording unprecedented revenue. States are now able to pay salaries and gratuities promptly and still have surplus funds for capital and social projects—an achievement not previously witnessed at this scale.”

Onanuga said government is correcting the errors inherited from the PDP era, when Atiku was vice president, through bold reforms that are yielding results.

He stressed: “After just two years and five months in office, we are proud of the progress being made under President Tinubu’s leadership. Atiku and his allies may choose to ignore these gains, but Nigerians can see and feel the positive changes taking place across the nation.”

Morka: ex-VP out of touch with reality

Chiding Atiku for subjectivity, Morka said the former vice president was out of tune with reality.

He described the comments as incendiary and inciting, borne out of his desperation for power.

Morka, who spoke on television last night, said: “At this point, I want to believe Atiku is out of touch with what goes on in the country. If Atiku were paying attention to the unfolding economic programmes of this government, he wouldn’t make such a statement.

“When every paper is reporting lowering of inflation, he is making inciting comments. It is grossly disappointing that a man, who had the opportunity to end hunger, insecurity could not in eight years as vice president.

“It is wrong for him to say that. Nigerians know Atiku is desperate for power. He needs to rest; he has become irrelevant to any consideration of posterity.

“There is nothing he is saying today that should lead Nigerians to that point (revolution).

“A man like Atiku should be quiet. The same Atiku confessed how they squandered $21 billion meant for electricity.”

The Publicity secretary said President Tinubu initiated bold reforms to clean the mess perpetuated by PDP administrations.

He added: “The problems are a failure of those who came before him. President Tinubu has initiated reforms to tackle age-old problems. He is being scientific.

“Every government before him has not done anything to tackle the problem.

The Jonathan government and the one before him operated a phantom economy. Buhari served as a stabiliser, he came to hold the country so it won’t tip over. Buhari also didn’t create the problems contended with.”

Hailing the President for doing what no one has done in just two years, Morka said: “The President addressed the structural problems of the economy. Inflation has reduced, he has been vindicated.

“The benefits of his reforms are showing. Even Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said Tinubu should be praised for stabilising the economy.”

The spokesman emphasised that following the fuel subsidy removal and naira floating, there is stability in the foreign exchange, stressing that the country now has the best balance of trade in Africa.

He added: “Hope is coming alive. The economy that was in tatters is now on solid ground. Nigerians are smart people and are seeing the signs. Farmers are smiling more. The future will get better.”
