Union Bank of Nigeria completes merger with Titan Trust Bank

Union Bank of Nigeria, one of the nation’s longest-standing financial institutions, today announced the successful completion of its merger with Titan Trust Bank Limited, following final approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

This milestone, according to a statement  from the bank’s  Chief Brand and Marketing Officer, Mrs. Olufunmilola Aluko,    concludes a process that began with the signing of a Share Sale Agreement in 2021 and positions Union Bank as an even stronger force within Nigeria’s financial services sector. Under the terms of the merger, Union Bank has fully absorbed Titan Trust Bank’s operatons and assets. The combined institution will continue to operate under the Union Bank brand, while Titan Trust Bank ceases to exist as a separate entity.

With an expanded footprint of over 293 service centres and 937 ATMs nationwide, supported by strengthened digital channels, Union Bank is poised to deliver enhanced value across retail, SME, and corporate segments. The merger combines Union Bank’s trusted heritage with Titan Trust’s agility and innovation, creating a platform for sustainable growth and broader financial inclusion.

Union Bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Yetunde Oni, described the development as “a pivotal moment in our 108-year journey, and a launchpad for delivering greater value to our customers. By blending stability with innovation, we are better positioned to meet the evolving needs of Nigerians and to be their most trusted financial partner.”

  • Investors await interim dividends by major banks

Investors await interim dividends by major banks

Investors are taking positions in major banking stocks ahead of this month’s release of the audited half-year results and interim dividends of major banks.

Nigeria’s tier-1 banks, including Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO) Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, Access Holdings Plc, United Bank for Africa (UBA), Stanbic IBTC Holding Plc and Fidelity Bank Plc have established a regular pattern of paying dividends twice a year, with interim dividend usually declared on the half-year report.

The major banks, also known as systemically important banks, control about three-quarters of the banking industry funds and have significant influence on the stock market, where banks are the most actively traded stocks.

Regulatory filings reviewed yesterday showed that nearly all the major banks have indicated they would be paying interim dividends on their six-month results, which are currently undergoing review by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The results, alongside the interim dividends, are expected to be released over the next three weeks.

Most analysts said they expected the release of interim dividends by the major banks to influence activities at the stock market in the period ahead.

Managing Director, GTI Capital Limited, Mr. Kehinde Hassan, said the expectations of interim dividends were major factors influencing market behaviours.

“Speculative trading may intensify as investors position themselves ahead of potential announcements, making September a potentially dynamic month for banking equities on the Nigerian capital market,” Hassan, a multi-asset chartered stockbroker and accountant said.

He explained that following the Central Bank of Nigeria’s restriction on interim dividend declarations by banks under the forbearance regime, most affected institutions had taken proactive steps to restructure their balance sheets and reassure the investing public of their intent to exit the forbearance framework by the half-year ended June 30, 2025.

According to him, the restructuring opened the door for eligible banks to declare interim dividends, although a few could remain under regulatory constraints beyond this period.

He said: “As a result, investor sentiment is tilting strongly toward banks not under forbearance, with heightened anticipation of dividend payouts. These dividend-eligible stocks are likely to attract increased demand, driving price appreciation and higher trading volumes.

“Conversely, banks still restricted from declaring dividends may experience waning investor interest, prompting dividend-focused investors to reallocate capital toward more promising alternatives within the sector”.

Most banks have already submitted their half-year financials and are awaiting regulatory approval for dividend declarations.

However, the uncertainty surrounding CBN’s final stance could introduce short-term volatility in share prices.

The board of Zenith Bank stated that it had considered interim dividend payment alongside the approval of the bank’s six-month results.

The Tony Elumelu-led board of United Bank for Africa (UBA) said it had “approved an interim dividend” for the half-year period, subject to the approval of the CBN.

Directors of Stanbic IBTC Holdings said they had decided to audit the half-year results of the group, one of the preconditions for declaration of interim payout.

Access Holdings stated that the audited group financial statements for the six-month period ended June 30, 2025 approved by its board included “the payment of an interim dividend”, which would be announced upon approval by the CBN.

Under a three-step final process for the release of half-year results and interim dividend recommendations, the board of directors meets to consider and approve the audited financial statements as well as dividend recommendation.

The board-approved reports are then transmitted to the primary regulator, in the case of financial institutions and other regulated entities. With the receipt of the approval of the primary regulator, the results and dividend recommendations are finally transmitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) for onward  release to the investing public.

Post-listing rules at the NGX require quoted companies to submit interim or unaudited quarterly report not later than 30 calendar days after the end of the relevant period. Most quoted companies including all banks, major manufacturers, oil and gas companies, breweries and cement companies use the 12-month Gregorian calendar year as their business year.

However, where a company chooses to audit its quarterly accounts, it shall be required to file such accounts not later than 60 calendar days after the relevant quarter. All the leading banks also undertake audit of their half-year accounts. While the deadline for the submission of their accounts was Friday, August 29, 2025, the banks had secured regulatory waiver to extend submission till the end of September 2025.

  • Presidency: North not marginalised in federal projects

Presidency: North not marginalised in federal projects

    • ‘Abuja, Lagos development in national interest’

The North is not marginalised in the distribution of federal projects, the Presidency said on Sunday evening.

It described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as ‘president of all,’ a statesman, nationalist, patriot and caring leader who sees the entire country as his constituency.

According to the Presidency, the report on marginalisation of the North is faulty, stressing that the distribution of the projects has mobilised the region in the spirit of equity, fairness and justice.

Presidential Adviser on Media and Public Communications Sunday Dare, who reacted to the recent headline in ‘Daily Trust’: ‘In Two Year, Lagos Gets N3.9 Trillion Projects,’ berated the medium for sensationalism, lack of accuracy and distortions.

He said in a statement titled: ‘Why Lagos? Yes Lagos (And Abuja too). The North is mobilised, not marginalised,’ that the distortions were weaponised to inflame passion and incite the region against the administration instead of offering objective information.

The newspaper’s report trailed earlier speculations by opposition elements that the North was marginalised in the distribution of political and public service appointments, which were debunked with facts.

Also, the latest subjective report was released at a time the Northern Governors’ Forum, led by Gombe State Governor Inuwa Yahaya, praised the Federal Government for fighting the infrastructure battle in the region with much vigour and commitment.

Dare explained that the federal government also focussed on the development of Lagos as the economic nerve centre and Abuja as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in national interest.

Dismissing the report as a product of lazy journalism, he said “numbers without context are not facts,” adding that “they are distortions weaponised to inflame rather than inform.”

He said responsible journalism requires rigour and propaganda should be seperated from reporting in the “inescapable duty of media practice.”

Dare stressed, “The attempt to portray Lagos as over-pampered while casting the North as neglected is not just misleading; it is lazy journalism.

“The truth is more complex, more national, and more honest. President Bola Tinubu is not just a statesman, he is a nationalist and a President for all.”

The presidential aide insisted that Northern Nigeria is mobilized and not marginalized, pointing out that half of the infrastructure and agricultural investments in 2024 and 2025 budgets went to the region.

Dare added, “Let’s start with the North. Far from being abandoned, it anchors over half of the capital budgets for 2024 and 2025 when you account for trunk infrastructure and agricultural investments.”

Reeling out vital statistics, the media adviser listed the on-going capital projects in the region.

These are: Abuja–Kano Expressway dualization, ₦12.1 trillion Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway; (₦3.63 trillion already approved for rollout in Sokoto and Kebbi), Kano–Maradi Railway and the Zungeru–Kano Power Line, Funtua and Bauchi Inland Dry Ports, and Airport upgrades in Katsina, Maiduguri, and Kaduna.

“Add to this massive funding for the Sokoto-Rima, Upper Benue, Hadejia-Jama’are, and Lower Niger River Basins; and food-security anchors like Special Agro-Processing Zones in Borno, Kaduna, and Kebbi, and wheat development in Jigawa and Kano. This is not marginalization. It is mobilization.”

Dare, who wondered why some critics are fixated on Lagos in the distribution of infrastructural projects, said they tended to neglect the patriotic motivation and reality.

He described Lagos as a melting hub, which hosts Nigerians from all the states of the federation and shoulders enormous national responsibilities.

He said: “What did Lagos receive in 2013–2015? Or 2021–2023? Without period-over-period comparisons—adjusted for inflation, exchange rates, and statutory revenue outturns—any single number is meaningless.

“Lagos is not just a state. It is Africa’s second-largest city economy, with over 23 million residents and hundreds of thousands more arriving every year.

“Every Nigerian ethnicity is represented in Lagos. It is Nigeria in microcosm—a great melting pot straining under infrastructure loads no other state faces.”

Dare also defended the continuous investments in Abuja infrastructural development, saying that Lagos and FCT should be developed simultaneously.

He added: “Abuja is becoming the same; one of Africa’s fastest-growing cities, projected to exceed 7 million people by 2030. As the federal capital, it carries the daily weight of the civil service, the diplomatic corps, and a booming private sector.

“That is why President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given extra care to both Lagos and Abuja. Not as favoritism, but as strategy. When these two urban giants work, Nigeria breathes easier. When they fail, the whole country suffers.”

The presidential adviser relected on the strategy of “planning continuity,” emphasising that “no project begins or ends in a single election cycle.”

He said: “What Lagos and Abuja receive today flows from the ERGP (2017–2020), the ESP (2020) during COVID-19, and the NDP (2021–2025). The forthcoming Renewed Hope Plan (2026–2030) will build on them.”

Dare drew attention to the import of mega cities, which Abuja and Lagos typify, saying that they deserve support.

Drawing attention to the global practice of giving “mega support” to mega cities by citing the example of United States and South Africa, he said “national development is a continuum, not an accident.”

Dare added: “New York City receives tens of billions in annual federal transfers, covering housing, health, education, and transport. In FY 2022, New York State and City received $117.5 billion in federal support.

“Johannesburg/Gauteng generates one-third of South Africa’s GDP. Its 2025/26 provincial budget tops R172 billion, aligned with federal transport and housing priorities.

“If New York and Johannesburg receive proportional federal support because of their scale, why should Lagos and Abuja be treated differently?”

Dare dismissed the insinuations that investments in Lagos and smacked of favouritism, stressing that much benefits would acrue to the country in the process.

He said, “Why Lagos? Why Abuja? Because Lagos is Nigeria’s economic lifeblood.

Because Abuja is its political and diplomatic heartbeat. Because both cities carry the daily weight of the federation—demographically, economically, and symbolically.

“Investing in Lagos and Abuja is not favoritism. It is statecraft. In the U.S. and South Africa, city-economies like New York and Johannesburg receive federal resources reflective of their burdens. Lagos and Abuja, which together anchor Nigeria’s survival, deserve no less.

“The real question is not “Why Lagos?” or “Why Abuja?” The real question is: What happens to Nigeria if Lagos and Abuja are ignored?”

    • Party open to FCT Minister’s reintegration

Stakeholders in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are considering consensus to pick officials of the party during the Ibadan National Convention in November, The Nation has learnt.

The objective is to avoid a repetition of the conflict and disharmony sparked by the 2022 presidential primaries.

The situation is largely blamed for the party’s loss of the 2023 presidential election and the massive defections of top members ,including two  state governors, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Some other notable members of the PDP,including former vice president Atiku Abubakar and former Senate President David Mark have switched to the Africa Democratic Congress (ADC).

Highly placed sources in the PDP said the National Executive Committee (NEC) and state governors elected on the platform of the party have agreed that they should give no room for further frictions if the party must move ahead.

The party is also open to having Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike and his supporters fully back in the fold following recent disagreements over some issues.

It was gathered that the PDP Governors Forum has reached out to the Wike camp on giving consideration to some of their demands, although it was not immediately clear how much grounds the party hierarchy is willing to concede for peace to reign.

Sources said the decision of  the party to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the  south was part of the demands from  the Wike camp.

Wike is also demanding formal recognition of  his loyalist, Chief Dan Orbih as the South-South Zonal chairman, and derecognition of  Chief Ali Odefa from the Southeast as National Vice Chairman.

He had said during a recent media chat that the demands must be met to avoid more crises in the party.

He said: “If they want another round of crisis, so be it. That congress moved that Chief Dan Orbih emerged as the National Vice Chairman South-south of the party. The court allowed it for the congress to hold and the congress was held. The so called acting National Chairman of the party went and wrote a letter to INEC.

“The congress was held on Saturday the 15th and he went and wrote a letter on the 8th, for example, that the Congress had been postponed. Chief Dan Orbih is the National Vice Chairman of PDP, South-south. If they don’t agree, that is another round of crisis.

“Two, the south-east congress which produced Chief Ali Odefa as the National Vice Chairman cannot stand because the court had affirmed that Odefa is no longer a member of the party.

“That is what I told the people that I cannot allow impunity and will fight it until they correct it; there is time for them to resolve before we talk of convention, if it is not resolved, that is invitation to crisis.”

It is understood that more consultations are being held on the various issues.

National Chairman of PDP  Ambassador Umar Damagum, and  the Chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed have confirmed that  zoning the party’s presidential ticket to the south was part of the  strategy to recalibrate PDP.

The position of national chairman was conceded to the north in the report of the Governor  Douye Diri-led  National Zoning Committee.

The next stage in the presidential ticket zoning arrangement is to micro-zone the position to one of  the three geo-political zones in the south:Southeast,Southsouth and Southwest.

The three zones are already consulting on how to go about it, according to sources.

No aspirant has publicly declared his interest yet, although some party big wigs like Professor Jerry Gana and Governor Bala Mohammed have said former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Labour Party flag bearer in 2023,Mr.Peter Obi are welcome to the race.

Neither of them has responded to the open invitation yet.

For the position of  national chairman, stakeholders across the north and south are currently  involved in working towards having one through national consensus.

Zonal Executive Committees’ in the six geo-political zones are said to have commenced  negotiations on  ‘micro-zoning’ positions to the  various state chapters.

According to party sources, each state and zone has been directed to reach a good level of consensus during the November 15-16 national convention.

Sources said the party may go for a relatively young person with drive and commanding  leadership presence.

While former Governor of Kaduna state, Ahmed Makarfi who once acted as PDP national Chairman and former Minister of Information, Prof Jerry Gana have been seriously considered, new developments indicate that there is now serious discussions about leaving Makarfi from Kaduna state in the North West to continue as Secretary of the Board of Trustees while a younger party loyalist from the North Central is considered for the  chairmanship candidate.

According to a member of PDP NEC who spoke with The Nation in confidence, some stakeholders are considering a three-time member of House of Representatives, Honourable Teejay Yusuf from Kogi state as one of the likely candidates for the position of national chairman.

“What they are saying is that Teejay Yusuf who is under 60 can be a bridge between the north and south as he speaks Hausa and Yoruba fluently; they also say that he has staunchly remained in PDP since 1998 and withstood various storms, including being denied  committee chairmanship in the House of Representatives for four years because he seriously toed party lines rather than support a close friend from another party who eventually became speaker of the House.”

When contacted on telephone, Hon Teejay Yusuf told The Nation that because of high regards for the superiority of party interests over individual aspirations, all stakeholders are still busy working on the collective objective of recalibrating PDP.

“Contrary to what many outsiders assume, all party stakeholders will collectively decide and form a consensus in deciding who occupies what position in November; it is not going to be determined by mere personal ambition because we all have a common resolve to rebuild the party and make concessions to one another where necessary,” he said.

Wike: Rivers LG poll clears coast for Fubara’s return

    • Suspended governor’s absence on election day raises concerns

    • Massive voters’ turnout in rural communities

    • APC wins in first declared result

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has said that Rivers State is only a step away from the lifting of its emergency rule.

This, he said, followed the successful conduct of the local government elections conducted in the state yesterday.

Wike, the immediate past governor of the state, said with the emergency rule due to expire on September 18, suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara and members of the state House of Assembly “will come back to their job.”

He spoke to reporters soon after casting his vote at about 11:15am in Rumepirikom, Ward 9, Unit 007 in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

The elections were conducted across the 23 local government areas.

    It was generally peaceful.

Turnout of voters, though massive in the rural communities, was low in the cities.

Port Harcourt and Obio-Akpor were devoid of their usual hustling and bustling as many residents chose to stay indoors.

Apart from regular patrols by security agencies, especially the police and persons on essential duties, other vehicles were off the roads in compliance with the restrictions on human and vehicular movement by the police.

The ever busy Port Harcourt Slaughter Road, Ada George, Elekahia and other areas were deserted while all markets, malls and other business areas were shut down.

Youths were seen playing football on major roads.

But it was a different story in the rural areas, particularly Ogoni communities like Baroko, Bera, Bidera and Biera, where opinion leaders mobilised residents to the various polling units to cast their votes.

A former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Prince Chibudom Nwuche, was seen monitoring the exercise as an election observer.

However, suspended Governor Fubara was not sighted in Port Harcourt or his community in Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area.

His ward 5 in Opobo-Nkoro was said to have witnessed little voting activity.

It was also learnt that leaders of the disbanded Simplified Movement across the state stayed away from the elections

Sources said Fubara was out of the country.

The Sole Administrator, Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), went round to monitor the election.

He was seen moving around polling units to observe the process and to ensure that the exercise was peaceful and orderly.

The FCT Minister described the exercise as peaceful.

He played down the low turnout of voters in places like Port Harcourt and Obio-Akpor, saying: “When you go to commercial areas, you don’t expect a large turnout of people. But when you go to residential areas, you expect a huge turnout.

“Particularly as I am here now, this is my community; you can see the large turnout. So it is in other areas.

“If you go to the rural areas, you expect more participation. For those people who are non- indigenes of Rivers State, they feel they don’t have any one participating in election.

“I am very happy with the turnout of people. I have got reports from the rural areas that people came out to exercise their franchise.”

Wike said since the election was conducted in accordance with all legal processes, there was nothing to worry about in the actions of some aggrieved persons.

He credited President Bola Tinubu for the successful conduct of the election.

His words: “We have to thank the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for making sure that this election is conducted.

“First of all, if election is not conducted, you know the Supreme Court had said there is nothing like technical committee, and if there are no elected people, funds will not come from the Federation Account to the local government councils, and that means that if the emergency rule is lifted without local government election, we would still have the same problem.

“Now that the local government election has been conducted, it means that there are elected people. Therefore, they will get funds directly from the Federation Account.

“Everybody is coming out for this election in order to stabilise the grassroots.

“We are very glad we are conducting this election, and at the end of the day, the elected people will emerge and sworn in, and we know that we have elected people.”

“I am very happy. It means that people identify with the election. You have not heard of any violence. You have not heard of the carrying of ballot boxes.

“You see that the electoral materials are there. People are there casting their votes. As far as we are concerned, the election is very peaceful.

A suspended Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member of the House of Assembly, Igwe Aforji (Eleme Constituency), acknowledged the orderly conduct of the election.

“I commend the organisers of the election. I can confess to you that we have never had it this good at the grassroots level. It has manifested today that the people are interested in knowing who will be their chairmen and councilors,” he said.

He also hailed the people of Eleme for coming out en masse to take part in the election.

He said: “I believe that nobody will contest (the result of) this election, because it reflects the wish of the people.

“The turnout shows that everybody wants the candidate of the APC and I believe that he is cruising to victory. He is a good product.

“Nobody will want to contest this election because even me, as a PDP member, I know he is going to win.”

The APC chairmanship candidate in Gokana, Confidence Deko, described the election as free, fair and most credible.

He said: “It was a peaceful election we had around here. What you see here is massive. That is to tell you how the people embrace the election.”

The South-South Chairman of APC, Victor Giadom, said the orderly conduct of the election was a sign of better things to come in 2027.

He said: “This is a sign of what will happen in the 2027 general elections. The election was peaceful. There was no violence.

“We have a united front for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu where all shades of political opinions come together to foster stability and the future appears to be exceedingly bright.”

Sole Administrator Ibas, in a statement signed by the Senior Special Adviser on Media, Rivers State Government, Hector Igbikiowubo, expressed profound satisfaction at the peaceful and orderly conduct of the local government election.

He described it as a decisive and positive step towards restoring full democratic governance at the grassroots level.

Ibas said he was highly encouraged by the commendable conduct of voters and election officials, which he said created a calm and secure atmosphere for the exercise.

Ibas said: “I am very happy with what I have witnessed today. The process has been notably peaceful, from the significant turnout to the orderly conduct of both voters and election officials.

“I am confident that at the end of the day, we will have a credible set of results that we will all be proud of as a state.”

He said situation reports from across the state corroborated his firsthand observations, pointing to a smooth, credible and largely incident-free exercise.

“Generally, the situation has been calm and seamless across the state.

“We have not received any major negative report, which is a testament to the collective desire for peace and normalcy.”

Ibas said that the people of Rivers had unequivocally shown their desire to elect a legitimate leadership that they could identify with at the local level.

He insisted that the successful poll was in direct alignment with the primary objective of his mandate to stabilise the state and return it to democracy.

He said: “Certainly, all indigenes of Rivers State want and deserve grassroots leadership they can call their own. That is what this process represents.

“For me, facilitating this foundational tier of democracy is a core objective of my mandate: to put the state back on its stable, democratic path and to empower its people.”

The state of emergency was declared on March 18 by President Tinubu following months of a running battle that pitted Fubara and his supporters against Wike and his supporters including the majority of the state’s lawmakers.

In the heat of the crisis, the suspended governor ordered the demolition of the state House of Assembly complex and recognised four members of the state House of Assembly who were loyal to him as constituting the legislative arm.

Some explosions also occurred in the state following threats by some people to cause trouble on account of the crisis.

The Supreme Court, in a February 28, 2025 ruling in respect of about eight consolidated appeals on the political crisis in the state, said: “A government cannot be said to exist without one of the three arms that make up the government of a state under the 1999 Constitution as amended.

“In this case, the head of the executive arm of the government has chosen to collapse the legislature to enable him to govern without the legislature as a despot.

“As it is there is no government in Rivers State.”

Tinubu had said  in a broadcast: “Having soberly reflected on and evaluated the political situation in Rivers State and the Governor and Deputy Governor of Rivers State having failed to make a request to me as President to issue this proclamation as required by section 305(5) of the 1999 Constitution as amended, it has become inevitably compelling for me to invoke the provision of section 305 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended, to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State with effect from today, 18th March, 2025 and I so do.”

Consequently, the Governor, his deputy, Mrs Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the House of Assembly of Rivers State were suspended for an initial period of six months and Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (rtd) was nominated as Administrator to take charge of the affairs of the state.

Three months after the emergency rule went into effect, Tinubu convened a high-level peace meeting at the State House in Abuja, bringing together key actors in the conflict for a rare face-to-face dialogue.

At the closed-door meeting were Fubara, Wike, suspended Rivers Speaker Martins Amaewhule, and several other lawmakers embroiled in the dispute.

Wike confirmed later that the parties to the Rivers State dispute had settled their differences and machinery had been set in motion for the restoration of all suspended democratic activities and institutions.

APC wins in first declared LG poll result

Early results yesterday showed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) had established a massive lead following the ongoing computation of the local government elections.

It was gathered that the APC was cruising to victory in 20 local government areas while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was doing well in three.

Wike votes, says coast clear to lift Rivers emergency rule

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Nyesom Wike, has voted in the ongoing Rivers State Local Government Elections.

Wike cast his vote around 11: 15am in Rumepirikom, Ward 9, Unit 007, Obio/Akpo Local Government Area of the State.

He described the exercise as peaceful and flayed concerns over the non-usage of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) in the poll.

He said: “I am very happy. It means that people identify with the election. You have not heard of any violence. You have not heard of carrying ballot boxes. You see that the electoral materials are there. People are there casting their votes. As far as we are concerned, the election is very peaceful.

“Of course we are concerned, but people are trooping out. Before the election closes, you will see the number of persons.  So, we are very happy that, at the end of the day, this election has been conducted very peacefully and successfully.”

Wike said with the conduct of the local government elections, the coast was clear for the lifting of the emergency rule.

He said: “So having done this, then the coast is clear for the state of emergency to be lifted, meaning that the local government has representatives, the state government has its own elected representatives, so we are good to go”.
