BREAKING: Tinubu departs Abuja for 10-day working vacation in Europe

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will today depart Abuja to commence a 10-day working vacation in Europe, the State House has announced.

A statement issued by his special adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the President will spend the period between France and the United Kingdom before returning to the country.

The trip forms part of his 2025 annual leave.

The departure comes on the back of a busy schedule for the Nigerian leader, marked by key economic reforms, new policy directives, and diplomatic outreach.

Only this week, Tinubu highlighted unprecedented growth in non-oil revenues that has powered Nigeria’s strongest fiscal performance in recent history.

Government figures for January–August 2025 show collections hitting N20.59 trillion, a 40.5% increase over the same period last year, underscoring the impact of reforms aimed at widening the tax net and digitising compliance.

On Wednesday, the President also directed the implementation of mandatory health insurance across all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, insisting that while government workers must be covered under the National Health Insurance Authority, businesses should not be unduly constrained as the Act is enforced.

Beyond domestic policy, Tinubu has been active on the international stage.

In August, his state visit to Brazil delivered agreements in aviation, trade, and science, as well as discussions to facilitate the return of Petrobras, the South American oil giant, to Nigeria’s energy sector.

The visit also paved the way for the launch of direct Lagos–São Paulo flights by Air Peace.

Before the State Visit to Brazil, he was in Yokohama, Japan, to participate in the ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), another global collaboration focused outing.

Earlier in late June and early July, the President toured Saint Lucia and Brazil in a diplomatic push to deepen South–South cooperation, while also using global platforms to position Nigeria as a credible and respected partner.

The Financial Times recently described his reform drive as “shock therapy” designed to stabilise the economy and restore confidence among investors.

In the same vein, international agencies have noted growing global respect for Nigeria’s economic direction.

Tinubu’s latest trip, although designated as a vacation, is expected to combine rest with working engagements in Europe, continuing a pattern of using foreign visits to consolidate domestic reforms and attract international support.

JUST IN: Over 15 terrorists die in NAF’s airstrikes in Borno

Over 15 terrorists were killed and key structures destroyed in the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) airstrikes in Zuba, Borno State, yesterday.

NAF’s spokesman, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, who announced this in a statement Thursday morning, stated that the strikes were “carefully planned and executed.”

According to him: “On 3 September 2025, a carefully planned and executed air interdiction mission struck a newly identified terrorist enclave west of Zuwa in the Sambisa general area.

“Acting on credible intelligence and confirmatory surveillance, the mission targeted hideouts harbouring fighters and commanders responsible for recent hostilities around Bitta.

“The strikes proved devastating, neutralising over 15 terrorists and demolishing key structures critical to their operations.”

According to Ejodame, the latest operation further decimated the terrorists’ capability in the area and demonstrated the NAF’s precision, reach, and resolve in the fight against terrorism.

He said it also underscored the NAF’s “unwavering commitment” to safeguarding the lives and property of Nigerians while supporting ground troops in joint operations to dismantle terrorist networks.

“Every successful strike brings Nigeria one step closer to lasting peace,” Ejodame said.

    • Kwankwaso open to talks

    • President not to blame for nation’s woes

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is good enough and will win re-election in 2027, House of Representatives member, Abdulmumin Jibrin, said last night.

The lawmaker, representing Bebeji/Kiru Federal Constituency Kano on the platform of New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), spoke on national television.

According to him, it is unfair and incorrect to blame the President for the nation’s woes, saying Tinubu has performed creditably.

He denied insinuation that the North is against the President’s re-election, saying it is dis-ingenious to say northerners won’t vote for him.

JIbrin, a fourth time Rep previously elected on the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC), says NNPP leader, Rabiu Kwankwaso, is open to alliance talks with President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 election.

He said: “I believe I cannot see anything that will stop him from winning the elections in 2027.

“There’s no two ways about it. I am a Tinubu person. I like him and he likes me. Irrespective of party affiliation, it has been a great relationship.”

On why he came out to declare his support for Tinubu ahead of the presidential election in 2023, the Kano lawmaker said he does not see anybody winning the election other than Tinubu.

He said: “I do not see anybody winning the presidential election, except Tinubu in 2027.

When asked if this meant he would choose Tinubu over the NNPP leader (Kwankwaso) in the next election, Jibrin clarified: “No, I’d choose Kwankwaso and Bola Tinubu to work together, but Tinubu as President.”

Jibrin, a staunch Tinubu supporter, served as director-general of the Bola Tinubu Support Group (TSG) before defecting to the NNPP in May 2022.

He had cited internal party disputes as his reason for leaving the APC, later pledging allegiance to Kwankwaso.

However, his recent political engagements, including two visits to President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa this year, have fuelled speculations about possible realignments.

On the likelihood of Kwankwaso joining the APC, Jibrin said the South should complete eight years in power.

The lawmaker said: “As far as (joining APC) is concerned, he has always maintained that his doors are open, our doors are open for discussions. Everything is a possibility.

“I actually believe that the South should finish the remaining four years,” he added.

Jibrin, who dismissed claims the North had “been shortchanged” in the power equation, argued that the North had enjoyed power longer than the South since Independence in 1960.

He stressed that the region must “tell itself the truth” and stop working against its leaders.

The lawmaker’s comments came in the wake of debates on zoning arrangements and coalition moves ahead of the general election.

On the agitation over shortchanging the North, the lawmaker said: “I feel terribly embarrassed when knowledgeable northerners of high standing in the society say the North has been shortchanged in terms of rotation of power.

“No, the North has not been shortchanged.  The North has had power for 39 and half years, the South has 28 years. Nigeria started in 1960.  It is absurd to be counting from 1999.

“It is unfair and an insult to the former Heads of State when a northerner goes to national television to say Nigeria started from 1999.

“Gen. Yakubu Gowon was Head of State for nine years. Shehu Shagari (four years); Muhammadu Buhari (two years as military Head of State); Gen. Ibrahim Babaginda, eight years; Gen. Sani Abacha (five years); Musa Yar’Adua (three years) and Buhari (eight years as elected President).

“Do we recognise Babaginda as a former President, yes, we do. Do we recognise Abacha as a former Head of State, yes we do. Do we recognise Buhari as former Head of State and President, yes, we do.  This has never been in contention in this country.

“I don’t think that it’s fair for northerners to be claiming any right to the presidency.”

The NNPP chief said this is why he concluded that Tinubu will win in 2027.

On the choice of Vice President Kashim Shettima as running mate to the President in 2027, the lawmaker said it will be in order to retain him, otherwise it would open up another round of controversies, such as the Muslim/Muslim ticket, which zone in the North should have the slot, among others.

He expressed disgust that Nigerians always lament the situation of things in the country during every government.

He advocated cohesion and consensus among Nigerians and for them to rally round the government in power for progress.

According to him, the President’s declaration that the revenue target for the year has been met in August is a good omen for the economy.

He added that by no longer borrowing from the domestic market, funds will be freed for banks to lend to the real sector which, in turn, will lead to more production and productivity.

N20.59tr Fed Govt 8-month revenue strongest in history

The country has achieved its strongest fiscal performance in decades, with non-oil revenues powering unprecedented growth in government collections, according to new figures released by the Presidency for January–August 2025.

It announced yesterday that total revenues collected during the period reached N20.59 trillion, representing a 40.5 per cent increase compared to N14.6 trillion recorded in the same period of 2024.

This surge, according to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, is the result of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reforms to strengthen compliance, digitise tax administration, and broaden the country’s fiscal base.

Speaking while receiving a delegation of The Buhari Organisation (TBO) led by Senator Tanko Al-Makura on Tuesday, President Tinubu underscored the shift away from oil dependency.

He said non-oil receipts, which amounted to N15.69 trillion, now account for three out of every four naira collected by government.

“For the first time in history, monthly allocations to states and local governments crossed N2 trillion in July 2025,” the President said, noting that increased fiscal inflows had significantly expanded the financial space of subnational governments to invest in food security, infrastructure, and social services.

He also highlighted that the Federal Government has not had to resort to borrowing from local banks since the beginning of the year, a development he described as a clear signal of improved fiscal health.

However, he acknowledged that revenues still fall short of the administration’s spending ambitions for education, health, and infrastructure, stressing that further efforts are underway to close those gaps.

The Presidency further explained that Customs collections have overperformed, with N3.68 trillion realised in the first half of the year — N390 billion above target and already 56 per cent of the full-year goal.

Officials attributed this to systemic reforms, including automation of filings, tighter enforcement, and broadened compliance.

Onanuga described the development as a landmark in Nigeria’s fiscal history.

“Nigeria’s fiscal foundations are being reshaped. For the first time in decades, oil is no longer the dominant driver of government revenue. The combination of reforms, compliance, and digitisation powers a more resilient economy. The task ahead is to ensure that these gains are felt in the lives of our citizens and in better schools, hospitals, roads, and jobs”, he said.

While inflation and foreign exchange revaluation contributed to the uplift, the Presidency stressed that the bulk of the growth was reform-driven.

The Budget Office is expected to publish final validations at the end of the year, but officials affirmed that the government remains firmly on course to meet its annual non-oil revenue targets.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved new appointments into the governing councils and leadership of two recently upgraded universities of education, underscoring his administration’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s tertiary education system.

In a statement on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President named Engineer Abdurrazaq Abubakar Nakore as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano.

Professor Abdullahi Tukur Kodage was also appointed Vice Chancellor of the institution.

Engineer Nakore, a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, previously served as Executive Secretary of the Rural Electricity Board in Jigawa State, bringing into the role extensive administrative and technical experience.

Professor Kodage, a seasoned academic, will now lead the university’s academic and administrative development.

At the Federal University of Education, Zaria, Kaduna State, President Tinubu appointed Professor Yahaya Isa Bunkure as Vice Chancellor.

A renowned scholar of science education, Bunkure is currently serving as Vice Chancellor of Saadatu Rimi University of Education, Kano, and is widely respected in academic circles.

Both universities were among four Colleges of Education upgraded to full-fledged universities between 2022 and 2023, in line with federal policy to expand access to quality tertiary education.

Under the laws establishing the institutions, pro-chancellors serve a four-year tenure, while vice chancellors hold office for five years.

The latest appointments are expected to boost leadership stability and academic growth in the institutions as they consolidate their transition into fully operational universities.

The Federal Government has declared Friday a public holiday to mark the 2025 Eid-ul-Mawlid, commemorating the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the government in a statement issued Wednesday in Abuja by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

Tunji-Ojo congratulated the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria and across the world on the occasion, urging reflection on the virtues of peace, love, humility, tolerance, and compassion exemplified by the Prophet.

“These values remain essential in building a united, prosperous, and progressive nation,” he said.

The Minister further called on Nigerians, irrespective of religious affiliation, to pray for peace, security, and stability in the country while supporting government efforts toward national harmony and sustainable development.

The economy has stabilised and the revenue target set for this year has been met since last month, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said yesterday.

With the revenue situation, government has enough resources to carry out its programmes without borrowing, he added.

The President spoke when he received members of The Buhari Organisation (TBO) – leaders of the defunct Congress for Progressives Change (CPC) – the political party formed by the late former President, which went into merger with others to form the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“Today, I can stand here before you to brag, Nigeria is not borrowing. We have met our revenue target for the year, and we met it in August,” the President noted.

“The economy has stabilised; nobody is trading a piece of paper for an exchange rate anymore. When I took over, it was N1,900 to a dollar. It’s N1,450 now. Rates are stabilising now, you don’t have to know a CBN (Central Bank of Nigeria) governor … all you have to do is export and import and create jobs for the people,” the President said.

Tinubu reaffirmed that his administration’s priority remained fixing the economy, creating jobs, and bringing hope to Nigerians.

“First of all, we are fixing the economy, bringing hope to the people. That is what we are looking for, and that is who is here,” he said.

Emphasising his commitment to agriculture development, the President said his government had begun a massive mechanisation programme to make every region of the country benefit from modernised agricultural centres, training schemes and job creation opportunities.

According to him, the push for food sovereignty and security remains central to his Renewed Hope Agenda (RHA), with the ultimate intention of defeating poverty by eliminating hunger.

He dismissed the threats United States President, Donald Trump’s trade tariff pose to Nigeria’s economy, because Nigeria under him, is building a stronger, more diversified economy.

“If non-oil revenue is going where it is going, then have no fear of whatever Trump is doing on the other side,”  Tinubu said.

The delegation of TBO was led to Aso Villa by its leader, former Nasarawa State Governor, Tanko Al-Makura. Also on the team was House Representatives Speaker, Abbas Tajudeen.

The President tanked TBO chieftains for their patience because of the delay in letting appointments go round those who worked for his victory in 2023.

“I couldn’t appoint everybody at once. Thank you for your patience. I still have some slots for ambassadorial positions that so many people are craving for. But it’s not easy stitching those names,” he explained.

The TBO members declared the “unconditional support” of CPC members for the President’s 2027 re-election ambition and his administration.

The President, in an emotional recollection of his partnership with Buhari, promised to immortalise him   by building a “Buhari House.”

Although the President did not say where the house would be situated, he said it would a “house of joy and prosperity.”

He paid tribute to late President  Buhari, recalling their early days of political struggle and alliance formation.

“You (delegation members) brought back the memory of the beginning of the alliance when we sat down to fashion out the way to go. We disagreed to agree. We even argued over a symbol. He insisted on parliament, and I insisted on a broom. He was so stubborn,” Tinubu said as he remembered their partnership.

He thanked the team for its loyalty, describing the team’s presence as a “sweet memory” and a reminder of the progressive ideals both leaders stood for.

“Don’t worry about the threats. When I see people like you, my determination is to work harder,” the President said, assuring them that his government would remain anchored on Buhari’s values of honesty, transparency, and justice.

    TBO pledges support

Thanking Tinubu for the honour he accorded the late President, Abbas and Al-Makuara, recalled the role he (Tinubu) played in their political mentor’s emergence as President.

Abbas said: “Indeed, today is the first day that the former members of CPC gathered in large numbers to visit our President to show support and appreciation for what he has been doing.

“I’m sure from the calibre of people you see here, you will be convinced that the notion that CPC is broken or not with this administration is a lie. More than 90 per cent of those who were active during the time of CPC are present.

“The support you gave today, every CPC member is proud of. Even though when people wondered if CPC would win, with the combined effort of you, he (the late Buhari), and other party members, we were able to realise that dream of making him (Buhari) the President.”

The Speaker described the honour Tinubu accorded Buhari at his passing as unprecedented in the history of Nigeria.

“It was unprecedented in the history of Nigeria for any former leader to be accorded such a kind of respect. The people you sent to the United Kingdom to pay the last respect and bring the body back, and the number of times you and the First Lady went to Katsina and Kaduna, are commendable. We appreciate all that you did and may the Almighty God reward you,” Abbas added.

Senator Al-Makura also expressed gratitude on behalf of TBO for the honour and dignity Tinubu accorded the  late President.

“When our leader passed on, the nation grieved and mourned. At that point, you became a symbol of consolation as you presided over the entire procedure of his passage. You not only buried Muhammadu Buhari but honoured him and ensured a befitting state burial with full military honours,” Al-Makura said.

He described Tinubu and Buhari’s alliance as one founded on discipline, justice and the pursuit of a united Nigeria rather than personal benefit.

“You were united by purpose and vision, not benefits. Together you conceptualised and built a foundation that makes the Renewed Hope Agenda a vision that is pragmatic, scientific and rewarding. This is not just a slogan but a blueprint for national restoration,” Al-Makura said.

He also pledged the group’s “full and unwavering support” for Tinubu’s administration and the APC ahead of the 2027 general election.

“Your Excellency, while commending you and your government for the efforts in promoting peace and unity despite challenges you met on the ground, we are urging you not to relent in ensuring that every part of this country is secure.

‘’Our loyalty and commitment to you and your government is irrevocable,” the former governor said.

A cloud of uncertainty is hovering over the proposed National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) due to a lack of agreement on resolving contentious pre-convention issues among the warring factions within the party.

The elective convention is scheduled for Ibadan, the Oyo State capital,  on November 15.

To achieve a hitch-free, valid and successful convention, the camp of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has listed six conditions that should be met by the party’s national leadership.

But the National Chairman,  Ambassador Umar Damagum,  PDP Governors Forum Chairman Bala Mohammed and Board of Trustees (BoT) Secretary Ahmed Makarfi said nothing can stop the convention.

Members of Wike’s group, who met on Monday night at the minister’s official residence in Abuja, warned that failure to meet the demands would “render the proposed convention invalid, as legitimate members of the party would be disenfranchised.”

At the ‘Eminent Persons and Stakeholders of PDP meeting’ were Wike, PDP National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, former Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu and former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom.

The meeting was also attended by the Speaker of the Rivers House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, Senator Phillips Aduda, Senator George Sekibo, Micah Jiba, some serving and former members of the National Assembly, as well as some state chairmen and some  BoT members.

A communique read by Ortom listed the demands as follows:

    • Fresh congresses to be held in Ebonyi and Anambra states in strict compliance with subsisting court judgments;

    • A new Southeast Zonal Congress must be urgently conducted.

    • The outcome of the Southsouth Congress in Calabar, already upheld by the courts, must be respected;

    • PDP should immediately conduct the Ekiti local government congresses in line with judicial pronouncements;

    • There should be no micro-zoning of offices, beyond the general zoning formula already adopted by the National Executive Committee (NEC) to maintain peace and stability;   and

    • The national chairmanship position must remain in the Northcentral, consistent with the zoning arrangement of the 2021 convention.

In a veiled reference to the threats from the Wike camp,  Governor  Mohammed said the PDP is not afraid of anyone.

He said: “We are not cowards and we are not afraid of any person. We can’t keep quiet and allow people to continue to take us to the slaughterhouse or take us for granted:  enough is enough.

“We agree to consensus and accommodation, but that is not cowardice.

“If anybody wants to form a faction of fools, we will allow him.”

The governor spoke after the inauguration of the Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri-led convention committee by National Chairman Iliya Damgum.

Damagum said the preparations for the convention would go on unaltered, based on the resolutions of the last NEC meeting.

With Damagum were   Fintiri, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde,   Governor   Mohammed, Deputy Governors of Enugu and Osun states, and BoT Secretary Ahmed Makarfi.

Anyanwu and Ortom, who were at the meeting of the Wike camp, were also present.

Ortom: PDP should respect rule or law

Ortom said PDP cannot conduct a peaceful convention when court judgments that could foster inclusion are not obeyed.

He believes a credible National Convention should be anchored on transparency, fairness, respect for the rule of law and inclusivity.

Ortom said: “We, the Eminent Leaders and Concerned Stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), having met to review the state of our great party and assessed the critical issues leading to the forthcoming National Convention, do hereby express our collective commitment to the principles of equity, justice, inclusivity, and the rule of law – values upon which the PDP was founded and upon which its survival depends.

“In the spirit of unity and progress, and mindful of the party’s historical role as a custodian of Nigeria’s democratic aspirations, we considered it imperative and expedient to make the following observations and convey our demands to the party leadership and the National Working Committee (NWC) as we prepare for the National Convention.

“PDP stands at a defining crossroads where its ability to reconcile internal disputes, uphold fairness, and respect constitutional processes will determine its future relevance.

“Unity cannot be built on disenfranchisement, exclusion, or the neglect of valid judicial pronouncements.”

    Hurdles before PDP, by Wike

Before the meeting, Wike, who had spoken on the preparations for the convention on a television station programme , said: “The issue of the national convention is not the problem; the issue is the problem leading to the convention, and people should understand that.

“If they are not well taken care of, there is a likelihood that the convention will not hold.”

Wike also said the choice of venue was not in dispute, insisting that the party must resolve its internal issues before convening.

He stressed: “The venue is not the subject matter, the subject matter is: ‘Have you done what you were supposed to do before holding that convention? If not, it may be a setback.”

    Damagum decries ‘destructive voices’

Damagum lamented that those tearing apart the PDP are its major beneficiaries.

He said the recent by-elections across the country, as well as the local government elections in Port Harcourt, speak eloquently about the challenges confronting the PDP.

He said: “Ironically, many of the destructive voices have come from individuals who have benefited immensely from the PDP. They sought to sow division and weaken our structures.

“Yet, history will record, and analysts will debate, but the consensus will remain that in a time of great difficulty, this National Working Committee, under my leadership, held the line and did a remarkable job.

“We must recognise that the challenges we face as the leading opposition are mutating, much to the dismay of well-meaning Nigerians; while the faction that broke out has not garnered much traction, we know that politics is dynamic, and the ruling class may seek to capitalize on or even sponsor such distractions to weaken the PDP, which remains the only dominant opposition party in our dear country, Nigeria.”

The PDP’s Deputy National Chairman (South), Alhaji Taofeek Arapaja, pointed out that “PDP belongs to the people and not to any individual.

“No matter what some people do, insha Allah, we are heading for Aso Rock in 2027,” he said.

    Markafi: PDP for majority involvement

Makarfi, in a veiled reaction to the threats by the Wike group, said that while efforts are being made to rally all stakeholders, success can still be recorded without 100 percent involvement of members in the convention.

He said zoning and micro-zoning had been agreed upon, adding that those raising objections are free to contest for the positions.

Makarfi said: “Convention is not about excluding anybody. It’s also not a denial of the majority to have their way, because that’s what democracy is all about.

“Convention is not about attaining 100%, but about involving an overwhelming majority, and if you have 100 percent, it’s fine.

“In that direction, the party has zoned its positions to the North and South. Either of them can sit and do what they wish, but that should not deny opportunities for any individual who disagrees by testing their will – just buy the form, go to the field and test your capacity.

“So, there’s no need for raising temperature, because there will be no exclusion; that has been the tradition since PDP was formed, we must always strive to build consensus.”
