    Soludo hits ground running

Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo hit the ground running yesterday after being sworn in as the sixth governor.

He retained Prof Solo Chukwulobelu as the Secretary to the State Government (SSG),

He also announced the appointment of Dr Chukwudi Okoli as the Accountant General and Chinedu Nwoye as the Deputy Chief of Staff/Chief of Protocol.

Soludo said his list of commissioners will be forwarded to the House of Assembly next week.

The governor and his deputy, Dr Onyekachi Ibezim, were sworn in by the Chief Judge of Anambra State, Justice Onochie Anyachebelu, at 10.55 am.

The event was held at the Government House in Awka, the state capital.

In his inauguration speech, Soludo, a former Central Bank governor, promised to transform the state.

He urged the people of Anambra to volunteer their time and treasure to create “the homeland of our dream”.

“Everybody is important in this journey and I need your help to succeed,” the governor said.

“We must all strive to die empty—to give our all, in aid of God’s creation. Each day, every Onye Anambra must ask himself or /herself: ‘What have I done today to make my home state livable and prosperous?’ It should be part of our daily devotion.

“There must be a purpose why God in His infinite wisdom decided to make you Onye Anambra—and that must be to leave it better than you met it. No one is too poor to give or do something for Anambra. If not you, then who; if not now, then when?”

Articulating his profound vision for Anambra, Soludo said: “As I close my eyes and visualise our future, I can see millions of Ndi Anambra holding hands and working hard for a glorious future.

“I see the skyscrapers along the banks of River Niger in Onitsha, Nnewi, Awka, Ekwulobia, etc.

“I see a smart megacity with millions of happy and prosperous people.

“I see us exporting massively to the world and the world coming to Anambra as a preferred destination to live, work, invest, learn, relax and enjoy.

“History beckons. Seize this moment Ndi Anambra, and together, let us make it count. Anambra: the Light of the Nation shines!”

Soludo spared a thought for three police officers – Inspector Murtala Saudi, Sgt Mudassir Ahmed, and Sgt Samuel Ishaya – who were killed during a pre-election meeting with youths. He pledged to continue to support their families.

Soludo, the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), believes his victory at the November 6-10, 2021 poll was ordained by God.

He had polled 112,229 votes to defeat Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Valentine Ozigbo, who polled 53,807 votes, and All Progressives Congress (APC) flagbearer, Andy Uba, who scored 43,285 votes.

Praising his predecessor Willie Obiano, Soludo said: “On Sunday, 20th November 2016, I accepted your proposal for gentlemen’s understanding and partnership.

“I kept my part in 2017 and even after five years, you still kept yours in 2021.

“I always emphasise this point because it is rare these days to find people who keep their word in politics, and we will never take your support for granted.

“You are indeed a great leader. Thanks for believing in me. We will work hard to make you and Ndi Anambra proud.”

“To our indefatigable national Chairman, Ozonkpu (Dr) Victor Ike Oye, your visit of 27th August 2016 and unwavering support remain historical.”

Soludo said it was time to work, adding that there was “no minute or kobo to waste in fanfare”.

He said he would meet the state security council, permanent secretaries and with his Strategy, Execution and Evaluation (SEE) team yesterday.

Soludo announced the suspension of all revenue collections in the state for one month and outlawed all cash payments to the Anambra government in motor parks.

Governor urges IPOB to embrace dialogue

Soludo emphasised the need for peace and called on youths, politicians and agitators, especially the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to embrace dialogue.

“There is no conflict that dialogue, in good faith, cannot resolve.

“Our government is determined to urgently restore peace and security in Anambra, and we will seek the active cooperation and collaboration of all stakeholders.

“To IPOB-ESN, the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), as well as the disparate armed groups in the forests, it is time to interrogate both the purpose and means of your campaign.

“To the politicians playing politics with the insecurity, you are riding a tiger. The current trajectory is a road to desolation.

“Let us get around the table and talk. Let the elite in the closet come out, and let’s debate our future and forge a consensus.

“The conspiracy of silence by the elite and some community leaders must end.

“If you see something, say or do something! Securing Igboland and Nigeria must be our collective responsibility,” Soludo said.

He believes the sit-at-home costs Anambra alone an estimated N19.6 billion every Monday.

Soludo said: “Due to the protracted breakdown of law and order, businesses are relocating outside Igboland, with growing unemployment, and traders who used to come to shop in Onitsha, Aba etc are going elsewhere.

“Who is losing? By forcing our children—the future of Igboland—to stay at home instead of being in school, while even the critically sick people (including pregnant women) cannot go to the hospital, we harm our future.

“I hereby challenge any of the disparate groups that claim that it is not part of the senseless killings and kidnappings to step out and show leadership by joining hands with us to do something about it.

“If you love our homeland, there is no place for bloodshed.”

    Abaribe, Ekweremadu, Obi greet governor

Senate Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, and former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, congratulated Soludo on his inauguration.

Abaribe, in a statement by his Media Adviser, Uchenna Awom, said he had confidence in Soludo’s ability to deliver and create a template for other states in Igboland.

“Prof Soludo’s track record in public service is a glaring example of a committed professional and an economist of repute.

“Such credential is a collateral to which he must guard jealously with superlative performance as a governor of a strategic and important state like Anambra,” Abaribe said.

Ekweremadu, in a statement by his media adviser, Uche Anichukwu, pledged to work with Soludo and other Southeast governors towards regional economic and infrastructural integration if elected Governor of Enugu State.

“Soludo’s tenure, I believe, is good news for Southeast regional economic and infrastructural integration, especially at a time hopes are high that the perennial efforts of the National Assembly at a constitutional amendment to devolve power, aviation, and railway, among others, to the concurrent list will come to fruition,” he said.

Former Anambra Governor Peter Obi and renowned economist, Prof Pat Utomi, were among those at the inauguration.

Obi said: “I have known Soludo for a long time. I trust that he will give Anambra people a transformation that will restore the state to greater glory.”

Utomi, who was a member of Soludo’s transition committee, said with the governor’s background, Anambra would witness a massive transformation.

Also yesterday, a coalition of traditional rulers in Anambra conferred a farewell chieftaincy title on Obiano.

He was given the title: “Ukwuomakpolu Anambra” (a harbinger of blessing to Anambra) at a valedictory/welcome party organised in his honour by the Aguleri Community in Anambra East Local Government Area of the state.

Buni returned on Wednesday night after a medical trip to UAE and a
meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari in London over the leadership crisis rocking the party.

The meeting, which took place at Yobe State Governors’ Lodge in Asokoro, attracted all members of the caretaker except the sSecretary, Senator John James Akpanudoedehe.

APC crisis deepens as CECPC passes ‘vote of no confidence’ in Akpanudoedehe

The leadership crisis rocking the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has deepened with 10 out of the 12-member Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) passing a vote of no confidence in the committee’s Secretary, Senator John James Akpanudoedehe.

The Secretary, in a statement, however, announced cancellation of the sub-committees formed by the Abubakar Sani Bello-led committee last week.

Akpanudoedehe released a new set of committees, stating the newly approved sub-committees supersedes any other list in circulation.

But a statement by the chairman, Gov Mai Mala Buni, faulted the purported suspension of some activities initiated and executed by the CECPC under the acting Chairman Governor Abubakar Sani-Bello.

Buni, in the statement dated March 17, 2022 said activities carried out in his absence by Sani Bello-led CECPC remain valid and binding.

The statement reads: “This is to bring to the notice of all stakeholders and members of the party that the purported suspension of some activities initiated and executed by the Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee under the acting Chairman and Niger State Governor, H.E. Muhammed Sani Bello, IS NOT TRUE.

“Therefore, all activities that were done in my absence remain valid and binding. All-party stakeholders and members are hereby advised to disregard the previous statement discarding the activities of the Committee under the leadership of the Acting Chairman.

“It could be recalled that I had duly transmitted power to His Excellency, the Niger State Governor, H.E. Abubakar Sani Bello to enable me to undergo medical attention.

“Therefore, all actions and measures taken by the Committee under his leadership as Acting Chairman, remain effective.

“The party calls for support and understanding to move the party forward to a successful Convention slated for March 26th, 2022.”

The vote of no confidence was passed through a notice dated March 8, 2022 by a majority of the APC caretaker committee members.

The notice was signed by Governor Abubakar Sani Bello; Senator Ken Nnamani; Senator Yusuf Abubakar Yusuf; Prof Tahir Mammah; Senator Abba Alli; H.E David Lyon; Hon Akinremi Olàide; Mrs Stella Okotete, Barr Ismaeel Ahmad and Dr James Lalu.

They cited Article 17 subsection 5 of the APC Constitution for the sack, arguing it empowers them to pass a vote of no confidence on any member found wanting.

The Secretary has been absent in most meetings of the CECPC for few weeks until Tuesday, fuelling speculation it may have been due to the vote of no confidence.

Reacting to the suspension of sub committees, spokesperson for the Sani Bello-led CECPC, Barr. Ismaeel Ahmed, said the list remains the final and authentic list.

Ahmed reiterated that the CECPC never approved the list released by Akpanudkedehe, insisting the committee has no record of such a list.

According to him: “The approved final list was the outcome of extensive consultations with all the stakeholders and follow up at ensuring a decent list that is representative and inclusive is put together and the same has since been issued.

“The laughable action of sacked Senator Akpanudoedehe is therefore considered an affront on the committee which was duly constituted in line with provisions of the party’s constitution and NEC of the party.”

But Akpanudoedehe insisted he remains the secretary.

He told The Nation on phone: “I am still the secretary. The letter by the President supersedes everything.”

Buhari to APC governors: Buni remains party chair

    • President insists on March 26 convention date

    • Yobe governor back, cancels NEC meeting

The leadership impasse in the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been halted by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The President asked party members to support Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni as chairman of the ruling party by maintaining the “status quo”.

He directed Buni to ensure that the convention planned for March 26 is held “unfailingly”.

President Buhari gave the direction in a letter he wrote to the governors elected on the ticket of the party after a meeting yesterday with Buni in London, United Kingdom, where he has been undergoing a medical check-up.

The President enjoined the governors to eschew behaviour and utterances that could put the party in jeopardy and attract sanctions from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Buni cancelled the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting fixed for today by Niger State Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, who acted for him.

A statement by Secretary of the Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) John James Akpanudoedehe, said Buni had directed that “the purported emergency NEC meeting” be cancelled henceforth.

The ruling party has been enveloped in crisis.

The caretaker committee and the Progressive Governors’ Forum were split into two camps over the alleged sabotage of the planned convention.

Buni, who was on medical vacation in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, was accused of plotting to truncate the convention by refusing to disclose the receipt of an ex-parte order, which Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai described as a “nuclear weapon”.

He said President Buhari approved the ouster of Buni so that Governor Sani Bello would drive the process to the convention.

In his March 16 letter addressed to Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), Kebbi State Governor Atiku Bagudu, President Buhari said: “As you are, no doubt aware, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is currently facing a litany of controversies and some level of uncertainties that may ultimately question its status and affect the status and feasibility of its proposed National Convention.

“In addition, it has come to my attention that, because of recent events, the APC is faced with a multiplicity of court cases pending against it in various courts across the country.

“As a result of this, the party faces the possibility and prospect of the invalidation of all its activities and actions by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“Furthermore, the party has demonstrated its inability to proceed with the issue of effecting change in the leadership of its Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Committee (CECC), in a way that is inclusive, legal and respectful of the time limit set and required for giving the INEC sufficient notice of the time and venue for holding its convention.

“No doubt, these controversies and uncertainties, as enumerated above, pose a real threat to the party; and may lead to a possible non-recognition of its activities, elections and the probable invalidation of all its other actions by INEC. This may ultimately even lead to its implosion and non-existence.”

Buhari asked APC governors to salvage the party by getting their acts together.

He said: “There is, therefore, an urgent need for the party to, as much as possible, avoid all controversies, litigations and all other necessary distractions and quickly get its acts together.

“In view of the foregoing, therefore, I will like now to direct as follows:

    “First, the issue of the leadership of the Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Committee (CECPC) should immediately return to status quo ante;

    “Second, all members of the Governors’ Forum and their followers should desist from any behaviour or utterance that will likely lead to disunity in the ranks of the party, and ultimately jeopardise the transition to the convention;

“Third, the Mai Mala Buni-led CECPC should accordingly, be allowed to proceed with all necessary preparations to hold the convention as planned-unfailingly, on 26th March 2022. Thank you very much.”

According to a source, who spoke in confidence, Buhari had an audience with Buni in London and directed him to take over the affairs of the party immediately.

The source said: “Buhari insisted that he did not order the removal of Buni. He was shocked to read about the turn of things in the party and the division among APC governors.

“At the London meeting, he gave Buni a must-do list for a hitch-free national convention and how to return the party to the path of democracy.”

An aide to Buni confirmed that he was airborne last night to Abuja.

He said: “Oga is already on his way to Abuja from London to take charge at the APC National Secretariat. He will do his best to hold a successful convention.”

  • Fed Govt to stop payment for unused electricity

Fed Govt to stop payment for unused electricity

The Federal Government will soon stop paying for unused electricity, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) Chairman, Sanusi Garba,  has said.

Garba told reporters in Abuja that issues surrounding the N1.6 trillion debt which electricity Generating Companies(GenCos) are demanding its payment, were technical.

Apparently accusing  GenCos of lacking the capacity to deliver, he said that   “it will be reckless to sign agreement for the generation plants for capacity that has not been delivered.”

He queried why “Nigeria will be paying for the capacity that has not been useful to Nigerians” when “the  infrastructure”  that ought to be provided by the firms “ is not there.”

NERC Vice-Chairman, Musiliu Oseni, also gave insight into the national grid collapse on Monday and Tuesday. Oseni blamed the development on a conductor snap on a 330 Kilovolts (kV) transmission line along the Benin, Edo State axis. The fault was however said to have been rectified yesterday.

Pointing out that some of the GenCos have no effective contract on payment of unused electricity, Garba said:  “If a generation company has effective Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), that provides for payment of a certain level of capacity, then there is an obligation to pay.

“A number of generation companies however has no effective contract that guarantees the payment of the so-called unutilised capacity.

“The good thing is that we are gradually migrating to a point where the generation plants will have capacity payments being somewhere and somehow delivered along the value chain.”

The power sector regulator chieftain, also explained that the government has stopped the payment of electricity subsidy, saying the decision to discontinue it (subsidy) was entirely that of the Federal Government.

“You can’t run the electricity market on life support,” he said as he recalled that “in the past four or five years, the payment of subsidy has gradually been reduced to about N30 billion this year.. .

His words: “ I believe all of you can understand that you cannot run the electricity market on life support and say that the investors should not get their return on investment.

“That policy decision was announced by the Minister of Finance.  Subsidy at a point was as high as N600 billion a year. and gradually has dropped to N30 billion this year. So that policy decision is from the government and we take directive from the government.”

On compensating consumers for poor service, especially as outage worsens, Garba said NERC has robust data gathering strategies and would do such. He said NERC had once compelled Jos DisCo to refund N200 million to consumers for poor service as well as Enugu DisCo.

NERC Vice-Chairman Oseni, who fielded a question on the grip collapse,   said”  The first system collapse happened due to a conductor snap on the 330 kilovolts Benin transmission line axis, it cascaded into the loss of 414 Megawatts of electricity from the Ughelli plant.”

He noted that power generation dropped from the 5,300 Megawatts (MW) average in October 2021 to 4350MW in March.

Oseni said it was a dip by about 1000MW on the grid that denied some customers enough supply.

  • Senators, Reps pledge support for presidential aspirant Tinubu

Senators, Reps pledge support for presidential aspirant Tinubu

By Sanni Onogu, Tony Akowe and Nicholas Kalu, Abuja

The Presidential aspiration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu got a big boost yesterday.

Tinubu got a rousing reception at the National Assembly and an instant endorsement by the House of Representatives caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The Senate promised to be with him.

Tinubu, a senator between 1992 and 1993, visited his former constituency to seek support for his bid to win the APC presidential ticket.

Tinubu had visited traditional rulers in the Southwest, his geo-political zone and other parts of the country. The endorsement he received was overwhelming.

Senate President Ahmad Lawan told Tinubu: “Your Excellency, once again, all of us wish you well, wish you the best of luck, wish you success in this and in the affair of fighting for APC, to continue to be the ruling party in Nigeria, and justifiably so, Your Excellency, we are with you.”

In an overwhelming voice vote, the House of Representatives APC caucus said ‘aiyes’ to the ambition of the former Lagos State governor when House Leader Ado Doguwa, who is also the Leader of the party in the House, put the question to vote.

Doguwa said Asiwaju Tinubu had supported several Nigerians to either be President, Governors, Senators or House of Representatives members, adding that “this is the time for you to pay back.”

Doguwa said members were fully in support of Tinubu’s candidacy.

He added that many members of the House and the Senate were occupying their position today as a result of Tinubu’s support, saying: “I want to look at you in the face and tell you that this is the time to pay back.

“We will continue to associate with you for the good of Nigeria and our people. We are immeasurably grateful. We will support you to achieve your lifelong ambition.

“Sometime when we interact with some people, they tell you that the President is a former military officer. You are from this institution and we are looking forward to President Buhari handing over to someone with a legislative background so that we can also boost about it.

“You are here preaching to the already converted because of the numerous contributions you have made to the development of Nigeria. You are the only one we know and will support. You have all it takes to run for the office of the President, you have all it takes to be President”.

With the overwhelming endorsement, the scheduled Executive session was shelved. Members insisted that the message was clear enough.”

In his welcome remarks, Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, said having put the APC together with like minds, it was time for the party to look inward and give back to those who can lead the country to greater heights after the current government.

He said: “We have looked left and right for the number of people who are running for the Presidency in 2023 and discovered that there is only one person going round the country campaigning and selling himself to Nigerians.

“It does not speak well of us when we boast of being the largest party in Africa and so many other things that we boast of. But few weeks to the party primaries for the nomination of candidates, only one person is going round marketing himself in his agenda.

“We are only having names, but only one campaigning. We should not wait for six weeks to election with only one person campaigning. In advanced countries, once the President is sworn in, the very next day, campaign for the next election starts. Names are being dropped and when you ask them, they tell you that they are just facing their job.

“The current attitude is not good enough and it is not good for Nigerians. We should not take Nigerians for granted. But only one man feels that he will talk to Nigerians, one man who care to speak on why he is running”.

Turning to Tinubu, the Speaker said: “You deemed it fit to honour the parliament both the Senate and the House of Representatives. You felt that this institution which is the centre of democracy all over the world deserve your attention and we will listen to what you have to say.”

While appreciating the visit, Deputy Speaker of the House, Rep. Ahmed Idris Wase, said this was the first time in the history of the parliament that a Presidential aspirant will visit the parliament to sell his candidacy and sought the support of all members

Wase said the former Lagos state governor has paid his dues, describing him as a detribalised Nigerian who has helped built the APC and is still helping in the building of the party.
