Tinubu, African leaders for Daura to attend Buhari’s burial

    • Body arrives Katsina at noon for 2pm funeral

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will today in Daura, Katsina State, receive the body of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The remains are due to arrive from London, the United Kingdom, where he died on Sunday.

Vice President Kashim Shettima and family members are expected to fly the body to the Katsina Airport in the Katsina capital at noon, from where it will be taken by chopper to Daura.

Daura is Buhari’s hometown, where he retired to after stepping down from office on May 29, 2023.

His burial is due to take place inside his modest house in the town at 2 pm.

President Tinubu will be joined at the solemn funeral ceremony in line with Islamic rites by former Niger Republic President Mahamadou Issoufou, and other present and former African leaders.

As of last night, many leaders who indicated interest in attending the Janaza prayers were expected to confirm their attendance, according to sources close to the funeral committee.

No fewer than 25 ministers will attend the programme.

Senate and House of Representatives leadership, governors, leading traditional rulers across the country, business leaders and other senior private and public officials will be there.

Daura, a small town, became choked with people last night.

But the tight security expected at the occasion may  prevent the Talakawa – the downtrodden Nigerians who were the backbone of Buhari’s political support base – from attending the funeral.

A full military honour is expected at the event, beginning with the reception of the body at the Katsina airport.

Buhari was a General in the Nigerian Army who served twice as the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, first as military head of state between January 1, 1985, and August 27, 1985, and as President between 2015 and 2023.

Since Buhari passed on, the Federal Government has taken many steps to honour the ex-leader.

President Tinubu declared a seven-day mourning period during which flags would fly at half-staff.

He dispatched the Vice President and Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, to London to bring back the body and family members, led by the widow Aisha.

The country is today observing the public holiday declared to mark Buhari’s final exit.

An 18-man inter-ministerial committee led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, is coordinating the funeral.

Members of the committee include ministers Wale Edun (Finance), Senator Atiku Bagudu (Budget and Economic Planning), Abubakar Badaru (Defence), Dave Umahi (Works), Mohammed Idris (Information and National Orientation), Bunmi Ojo (Interior), Nyesom Wike (Federal Capital Territory (FCT), National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination Hajia Adisa Bala-Usman, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) Mr.Tosin Ajayi, and the Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Christopher Musa, among others.

Idris said yesterday: “In honour of the late President Buhari, President Tinubu has also directed all ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) to open condolence registers at the entrance of their offices for the public to pay their respects.”

Also, a central condolence register for the diplomatic community and the general public will be available at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja.

Shettima’s media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, said upon his arrival in London yesterday (Sunday), the Vice President met with members of the bereaved family to convey the President’s heartfelt condolences and solidarity at this trying time.

Shettima also visited Mallam Mamman Daura, a close confidant and nephew of the late President, who is currently recuperating in a London hospital.

He also visited former Military Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, who is recuperating after his discharge from the hospital.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, who visited Vice President Shettima in London, paid tribute to the departed leader.

Nkwocha said the visit underscored the late President Buhari’s far-reaching influence and the respect he commanded both within Nigeria and on the African continent.

    Tight security in Daura

Security was beefed up yesterday in Daura ahead of today’s burial programme.

Our correspondent sighted personnel from the Army and police stationed at strategic points, especially roads leading into the ancient town.

It was also observed that some dignitaries and friends of the Buhari family had arrived in Daura.

Abdulsalami: we were in same hospital

Before Buhari’s death, Shettima visited him at the hospital on the President’s directive.

He also visited Gen. Abdulsalami, who was recuperating after treatment.

During Shettima’s second visit yesterday, General Abdulsalami recalled the final moments he spent with the late President Buhari.

Abdulsalami said he was admitted to the same hospital in London as Buhari before his death.

Speaking in an interview on a national television programme, Abdulsalami said he had just been discharged when he received the news of Buhari’s demise.

The former military leader described Buhari’s death as a “big blow” to Nigeria and the West African sub-region.

He spoke with conviction that the late President could be trusted with anything without fear of betrayal.

Abdulsalami said: “Unfortunately, we were in the same hospital together. But I had been discharged (before Buhari died).

“So, when I heard the news of his passing away, I quickly went there to condole with the family and see what could be done to get the remains ready to be taken home.”

Reflecting on his decades-long relationship with the deceased, Abdulsalami said this dates back to 1962 when they both joined the Nigerian military.

“He was my senior, and during the unfortunate civil war, we were fighting in the same sector,” Abdulsalami said.

The former military Head of State described the late Buhari as “a gentleman who was very quiet and exceptionally honest”.

He added: “You can trust Buhari with anything on this earth and he would not betray you.”

Abdulsalami also praised Buhari’s anti-corruption stance during his military and civilian tenures, highlighting the late President’s introduction of the War Against Indiscipline (WAI) in 1984.

Assessing Buhari’s record in office, Abdulsalami acknowledged that some officials in his administration fell short of expectations.

“When he became a democratic president, he tried his best to fight corruption.

“Unfortunately, some of the officials who served with him were found wanting. They didn’t do as much as was expected of them.

“With the passing of Buhari, politics in Nigeria will certainly change — I hope for the better,” he added.

According to him, the late Buhari’s life was defined by duty, loyalty, and a desire to instil national values and qualities that Nigeria must not forget.

“Despite his quiet nature, he was strong in character and consistent in principle.

“We have lost a patriot who tried to make Nigeria better.

“His death is not just a loss to his family but to the entire nation,” Abdulsalami added.

“It is common knowledge that in Kabiyesi Awujale, you have a forthright personality, who can speak truth to all at a time, who can be described as fearless, who abhors people telling lies and who is very straight forward to a fault.

“Kabiyesi is not used to anybody who is diplomatic. He says it as it is. At the end of the day, in the course of that, he garnered his own detractors.

“People have said that he successfully won all the battles. He was strong from the beginning to the end.

“He was indeed a forthright personality”.

Controversy as traditionalists, Muslim worshippers clash over burial rituals of Awujale

A mild drama on Monday almost marred the final rites of passage for Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, as traditionalists were prevented from conducting customary burial rituals at the monarch’s private residence.

The Nation reports Oba Adetona joined his ancestors on Sunday at 91 and was buried according to Islamic rites on Monday, July 14.

The traditionalists, who arrived in large numbers in anticipation of performing the age-long traditional rites, were denied access.

Viral videos seen by The Nation observed that scene turned into a “mild drama,” as chants from the traditional worshippers clashed with some Muslim faithful.

The development follows the enforcement of the Obas and Chiefs Law of Ogun State, 2021, which empowers traditional rulers to be buried according to their personal religious convictions rather than strictly by native rites.

Specifically, Section 55 of the law provides that while customary practices may still be applied during a monarch’s burial, these must comply with the wishes of the deceased and follow outlined procedures.

Subsections (iii) to (v) spell out the procedural safeguards required to apply traditional customs, effectively allowing a monarch to opt out of ancestral rites.

Traditionalists accused the government of eroding centuries-old customs.

The late Awujale, one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarchs, was a known Muslim and expressed a desire for Islamic burial, which was eventually observed.

The Awujalẹ initiated a bill titled “State Traditional Rulers (Installation and Burial Rites) Bill 2020” that was sent to the House of Assembly, which passed the bill, and Governor Dapo Abiodun signed it into law.

Responding in January 2022, Ogun Governor Dapo Abiodun said: “Of course this is without prejudice to traditional rites that is meant to be performed by the customary, but it clarifies and removes any ambiguity about the fact that the families of our Kabiyesis (monarch) now have a say in how they want our royal fathers to be buried and I think this is very laudable”

The former Military Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar has recalled final moments with former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Abdulsalami revealed that he was admitted in the same hospital with Buhari in London before his death.

The Nation reports Buhari passed away on Sunday at the age of 82.

Buhari is scheduled for burial on Tuesday, July 15, in Daura, Katsina State.

Speaking in an interview with Channels Television, monitored by The Nation, Abdulsalami said he had just been discharged when he received the news of Buhari’s demise.

He said Buhari’s death is a “big blow” to Nigeria and the sub-region.

Abdulsalami affirmed that Buhari can be trusted with anything without fear of betrayal.

He said: “Unfortunately, we were in the same hospital together. But I have been discharged

“So, when I heard the news of his passing away, I quickly went there to condole the family and see what could be done in order to get the corpse ready to be taken home.”

Reflecting on their decades-long relationship, Abdulsalami said his bond with Buhari dated back to 1962 when they both joined the Nigerian military.

“He was my senior; and during the unfortunate civil war, we were fighting in the same sector with him,” Abdulsalami said.

He described the late president as “a gentleman who was very quiet and exceptionally honest”.

“You can trust Buhari with anything on this earth and he will not betray you,” he added.

Abdulsalami also praised Buhari’s anti-corruption stance during both his military and civilian tenures, highlighting the late president’s introduction of the War Against Indiscipline (WAI) campaign in the 1980s.

On Buhari’s record in office, Abdulsalami commended his anti-corruption stance but acknowledged that some officials in his administration fell short of expectations.

“When he became a democratic president, he tried his best to fight corruption. Unfortunately, some of the officers who served with him are found wanting. They didn’t do as much as was expected from them

“With the passing away of Buhari, politics in Nigeria will certainly change — I hope for the better,” he added.

Buhari’s life, Abdulsalami said, was defined by duty, loyalty, and a desire to instill national values and qualities Nigeria must not forget.

“Despite his quiet nature, he was strong in character and consistent in principle. We have lost a patriot who tried to make Nigeria better. His death is not just a loss to his family but to the entire nation.”

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, (SAN) has recalled many contributions of the late ex-President Muhammadu Buhari to country’s growth and development.

Fagbemi, who noted Buhari’s efforts in how the country escaped the P&ID fraud and the Mambila Hydroelectric Power Project legal dispute, said the deceased made significant strides in strengthening the administration of justice and advancing law reform.

In a statement issued on Monday, Fagbemi said Buhari’s death marks the end of an era in Nigeria’s political and moral history.

The statement reads: “I join His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu and all people of goodwill across our nation and beyond in mourning this profound national loss.

“The passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, marks the end of an era in Nigeria’s political and moral history.

“His tenure witnessed the enactment of landmark statutes, bold policy initiatives, and far-reaching institutional reforms.

“These included the modernization of correctional services, policing, anti-money laundering frameworks, asset recovery systems, federalism through the devolution of powers, electoral reform and the deepening of good governance.

“It was under the leadership of former President Muhammadu Buhari that Nigeria initiated the successful challenge to the $11 billion P&ID arbitral award.

“That bold and strategic effort was steadfastly carried forward by President Bola Tinubu, ultimately enabling our nation to avert a crippling financial burden.

“Even in retirement, his unwavering sense of duty to the nation never diminished.

“I vividly recall visiting him in both London and Daura when his support was once again sought to help Nigeria confront another predatory claim — this time concerning the Mambila Hydroelectric Power Project.

“Despite the demands of age and the comfort of private life, former President Buhari selflessly agreed to serve as a witness.

“In January 2025, he travelled to Paris and stood before the tribunal, bearing testimony for the country he loved with rare and steadfast conviction.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to His Excellency President Tinubu, to the former First Lady, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, and to the family, friends and close associates of our dearly departed leader.

“Nigeria has lost a titan of principle and purpose. May his soul find eternal rest.”

Adeleke slams Aregbesola Over 2026 guber threat, labels his tenure worst in Osun history

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has fired back at the National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former governor of the state, Rauf Aregbesola, over his vow to unseat him in the 2026 governorship election scheduled for August 8.

Aregbesola, during a homecoming event on Sunday, had criticised Adeleke’s leadership style and declared that the ADC would reclaim power in the next election.

Reacting in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke described Aregbesola’s administration as the worst in Osun’s history, citing policies such as half salary payments, uncompleted projects, and the failed education tablet initiative (Opon Imo).

“A man who left a legacy of huge state debt, half salary, scam learning tablets, and several inflated, uncompleted projects should be ashamed, not boastful,” Adeleke said.

He accused Aregbesola of inflicting “inhumane maladministration” on Osun residents and condemned his recent comments as “the empty boast of a troubled mind haunted by his failures.”

Adeleke added that his government has made significant progress in repairing the damage left behind, including the payment of 28 months of outstanding half salaries and nearly ₦60 billion in pension debts, both inherited from Aregbesola’s tenure.

“Workers, pensioners, and the general public are not praying for a return to the evil days of a bad administrator,” he stated.

The governor also highlighted that under his leadership, Osun State has reduced the debt burden left by Aregbesola by 40 percent, according to the Debt Management Office, without borrowing for infrastructure projects.

“Within less than three years, Governor Adeleke has surpassed the eight-year record of Mr Aregbesola without borrowing a kobo,” the statement concluded.

“Mr Aregbesola is invited to note that Governor Adeleke has constructed about 200 Kilometers of roads, rehabilitated over 200 schools and health centers, placed over 30, 000 pensioners on free health insurance care, provided critical medical surgeries to over 60,000 Osun residents, Completed several abandoned projects at Osun State University, made University of Ilesa a reality among several others.

“If Mr Aregbesola is to accuse Governor Adeleke of non-performance, we await his review of the dualisation of the palace to brewery junction at Ilesa, which he failed to achieve while in office. He should check out the flyover projects at Ile Ife and Osogbo, and the dualisation projects ongoing at Iwo, among others.

“Osun people know their present and past governors. Our people are smart enough to know that the worst era for Osun state is that of Mr Aregbesola, under whom many pensioners lost their lives, thousands of lives were disrupted, and the state plunged into unsustainable debt that is still hurting the state to date. No voter in Osun is ready for a return to the dark days.

“We therefore dismiss Mr Aregbesola’s boast as a blurry vision of another world other than Osun, where Governor Adeleke has received accolades and awards for delivering on good governance and where Osun people have appreciated the local content policy, the non-borrowing policy, and the people’s first style of the current governor.

“Mr Aregbesola is a shrew (Asin ti o mo pe ohun unrun) who does not know that he is smelling. 2026 is a payback time when Osun people will punish the former Governor and his new party for wilfully inflicting pains and suffering on Osun people throughout his eight years’ rule”, the statement concluded.
