UPDATED: APC sweeps Lagos LG elections as LASIEC declares polls peaceful, credible

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has declared the July 12, 2025, local government and local council development area elections as peaceful, credible, and largely free of disruptions.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, LASIEC Chairman, Hon. Justice Mobolanle Abidemi Okikiolu-Ighile, praised Lagos residents for their maturity and peaceful conduct during the polls, describing it as a strong affirmation of grassroots democracy.

“I commend the good people of Lagos State for their maturity and peaceful conduct during yesterday’s election. Your engagement reinforces our shared belief in the importance of local government in service delivery and grassroots development,” she said.

According to official results, the All Progressives Congress (APC) won 375 out of 376 councillorship seats across the state, with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) clinching just one seat in the Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

Justice Okikiolu-Ighile also commended the role of security agencies, noting their professionalism and vigilance throughout the election period. “No major cases of electoral violence, ballot snatching, voter intimidation, or breakdown of law and order were recorded,” she stated.

While acknowledging the overall orderliness of the election, LASIEC admitted that some polling units experienced logistical delays, such as the late arrival of personnel and voting materials. However, the commission said prompt intervention by officials and security agencies minimised the impact.

The elections covered chairmanship and councillorship races across 20 local government areas and 37 LCDAs in Lagos State.

Collation of councillorship results was conducted at the ward level, while chairmanship results were collated at the LG centres, in accordance with the LASIEC Law 2008 (as amended).

Justice Okikiolu-Ighile disclosed that certificates of return would soon be presented to the newly elected officials at the Commission’s headquarters.

She expressed appreciation to civil society groups, observers, traditional leaders, market associations, youth and women’s organisations, and persons living with disabilities for their active involvement.

“To the winners, this is not a time for celebration alone but a call to service for humanity,” she said, urging unsuccessful candidates to stay committed to democratic values.

LASIEC reaffirmed its resolve to strengthen voter education and stakeholder engagement in future elections.

  • Tinubu back in Abuja after Saint Lucia state visit, 17th BRICS Summit in Brazil

Tinubu back in Abuja after Saint Lucia state visit, 17th BRICS Summit in Brazil

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived Abuja in the early hours of Sunday after a fifteen-day diplomatic outreach to Saint Lucia and Brazil.

The President who touched down at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at about 1:30am on Sunday, was received on arrival by some senior members of the administration and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

At the airport to receive the President were the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu; Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu; the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle; the Senator representing Sokoto North, Aliyu Wamakko; Minister of State for Works, Muhammad Goronyo; Senior Special Assistant to the President on Political and other Matters, Kabiru Masari; as well as senior security officers.

It would be recalled that President Tinubu departed Nigeria on Saturday, June 28, for what was described as a strategic outreach aimed at strengthening ties with regions historically under-engaged in Nigeria’s diplomatic matrix.

His first stop was Saint Lucia, where he made a historic visit to build new ties and explore emerging partnerships with Caribbean states.

While in Saint Lucia, President Tinubu interacted with regional leaders under the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), reinforcing Nigeria’s growing interest in Caribbean diplomacy and South-South cooperation.

He subsequently proceeded to Brazil to participate in the 17th BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro.

On arrival in Rio de Janeiro, a day before the summit, President Tinubu held a bilateral meeting with his Brazilian counterpart, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The leaders co-chaired the Nigeria-Brazil high-level bilateral meeting , where they discussed mechanisms to boost trade, infrastructure financing, and cultural cooperation between Africa’s most populous country and Latin America’s largest economy.

During the summit, which he attended as leader of a partner nation, on invitation by Da Silva, Tinubu addressed the gathering on the first day.

In his speech, he called for a comprehensive reevaluation of global governance structures, financial systems, and healthcare frameworks to ensure fairness, inclusion, and justice for low-income and emerging economies, particularly in Africa.

He emphasized the need for a new path of justice based on sustainable technology transfer and accessible financing so that emerging economies can fully benefit from global initiatives.

Highlighting Africa’s disproportionate burden from environmental challenges despite minimal emissions, he referenced regional efforts such as the African Carbon Market Initiative and the Great Green Wall, expressing optimism for strengthened global cooperation at COP30.

Domestically, Tinubu outlined Nigeria’s reform agenda focusing on renewable energy, climate action, urban resilience, and universal health coverage, underscoring Nigeria’s commitment to South-South cooperation and active participation in global decision-making on issues like financial restructuring, debt forgiveness, and climate change.

The Nigerian Leader’s address at the summit marked Nigeria’s debut as a BRICS partner country, reflecting the country’s growing role in global economic and diplomatic affairs.

Nigeria became the ninth partner country of BRICS in January, joining Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.

With the President’s return, focus is expected to shift to domestic engagements and follow-up actions on the diplomatic and investment commitments made during his foreign tour.

  • Defection: I’m still consulting, Osun PDP ready to follow me – Adeleke

Defection: I’m still consulting, Osun PDP ready to follow me – Adeleke

    • Gov meets party chiefs, cabinet, federal and state legislators, others

    • Eno formally takes over APC structure in Akwa Ibom

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke is on his way out of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and this is official.

Adeleke confirmed yesterday that he was already consulting on his planned dumping of the party.

He did not say where he might be pitching his tent next. However, his music star nephew, Davido, appears to have provided the clue in his latest song: From Umbrella to Broom.

Umbrella is PDP’s symbol while broom is that of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“New broom go sweep better…”, sings Davido in his latest release.

The governor’s spokesman, Olawale Rasheed, said in a statement in Osogbo that Adeleke met on his defection plan with the PDP leadership caucus which comprises the deputy governor, cabinet members, special advisers, federal and state lawmakers, among others, at the Government House, yesterday.

According to Rasheed, the PDP caucus passed a vote of confidence in Adeleke during the meeting and vowed to follow him to whichever party he desired to move to.

“Osun PDP leadership caucus passed a vote of confidence in Governor Ademola Adeleke, unanimously supporting any decision the Governor takes on the growing rumour of defection to another political party,” he said.

Continuing, the spokesman said: “The leaders, who praised the governor’s leadership and performance in office, mandated him to continue consultations with all stakeholders locally and nationally.

“The caucus meeting had in attendance representatives of all sections of the party and government, namely the National Assembly caucus, the State Assembly caucus, the State Executive Council, the State Executive of the party, the Special Advisers’ Forum, the elders caucus and the state chapter of ALGON leadership.

“After briefing from Governor Ademola Adeleke and exhaustive deliberations by leaders, the meeting issued a communique to signal its direction on the issue at the moment.

“In the communique, the PDP state leadership resolved to follow Governor Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke wherever he goes. The meeting however recognised that the Governor is still consulting on next lines of action.

“The meeting was attended by Governor Ademola Adeleke; deputy governor, Prince Kola Adewusi; Senate Deputy Minority leader, Senator Lere Oyewumi; Hon Bamidele Sallam; Hon Clement Olohunwa; Hon. Taofeek Abimbola Ajilesoro; High Chief (Mrs) Modupeole Adeleke; South West Vice Chairman of the PDP, Engr Kamoruden Ajisafe and Osun State Chairman of the PDP, Hon Sunday Bisi.

“Also at the meeting were House Speaker, Rt Hon Adewale Egbedun; Deputy Speaker, Rt Hon Ireyode Oyewusi; Secretary to the State Government, Hon Teslim Igbalaye; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon Kazeem Akinleye; former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola; Senator Oluwole Alabi, Alhaji Tajudeen Oladipo and Alhaji Fatai Akinbade.

“There were also Rt Hon Lasun Yusuf; Alhaji Gani Olaoluwa; Rev Bunmi Jenyo; the state chairman of ALGON, Hon Sarafadeen Awotunde; the Special Adviser Politics to the state governor, Hon Muniru Raji; SUBEB Chairman, Hon Ibukun Fadipe; and the state secretary of the party, Hon. Bola Ajao.”

The governor had repeatedly denied that he planned to dump the PDP.

Rumour of his planned defection gained traction after the governor, his elder brother and Davido’s father, Adedeji, paid a courtesy visit to President Bola Tinubu at his Lagos residence during the last Eid el Kabir holiday.

Davido was part of the visit.

Adeleke was absent at last Friday’s meeting of the South West PDP Caucus held in Ibadan.

He was represented by his deputy Kola Adewusi.

The refusal of former vice president Atiku Abubakar to visit the governor in Osogbo when he went to attend the installation of Oba Adesuyi Haastrup as the Owa Obokun of Ijesaland in May had also kept political observers wondering about political developments in the state.

Atiku chose to visit and dine with former Osun State governor, Rauf Aregbesola, instead.

Aregbesola is now the interim National Secretary of Africa Democratic Congress (ADC) of which Atiku is a chief promoter.

If Adeleke eventually joins the APC, he will be the third PDP governor to switch allegiance to the ruling party, taking after Delta’s Sheriff Oborevwori and Akwa Ibom’s Umo Eno.

Oborevwori, his immediate predecessor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, his commissioners, special advisers and other PDP stakeholders in the state joined the APC in April.

Eno and other PDP stakeholders in Akwa Ibom followed suit in June.

Breaking the news of the Delta defection in April, the pioneer chairman of the PDP in the state, Senator James Manager, had said “you cannot be in a boat that is already capsizing, because I am a riverine man.

“Looking at issues the way they are, we have come to the inevitable conclusion to do something else. It is a collective decision for so many reasons.

“Few days ago, there was a resolution taken by the PDP Governor’s forum at Ibadan. Almost all the governor’s were there and they resolved that they are not going into coalition with any other party.

“But as disadvantaged as the PDP is now with about 11 governors, how do you go into a contest with an incumbent president? You think you can win?

“That particular resolution killed the spirit of so many PDP members.

“We lost election in 2015 as a result of a merger which even included splinter groups from the PDP.

    “There are also other reasons.

“Today, Senator Anyanwu is the National Secretary of the party; tomorrow it is another person. The party must be positioned to go into an election to win.

“So you see that it is becoming very funny. The PDP is truly in trouble.”

On his part, Governor Eno of Akwa Ibom State said his defection was in response to the evolving political climate.

“We must be able to interpret the times, flow with them, and not swim against the tide.

“Having completed my consultations, I have now decided to align myself with the All Progressives Congress,” he said.

Akpabio hands over APC leadership in A’Ibom to Eno

Governor Eno formally took over the APC structure in the state at the first meeting of party stakeholders in Uyo on Friday.

The party structure was handed over to him by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Eno urged the party’s leadership at all levels to accept the movement and merger with open arms.

“This is a merger, and as the Senate President has said, we must, therefore, approach it with love, unity and understanding.

“There has to be some sacrifices from both ends,” he said.

“Let the leadership and members bring down the rhetoric so that we all can come together in droves and build a truly united All Progressives Congress in our state.

“We have heard stories where some ward leaders have brought out lists of requirements for people that want to join the party, as if it is a marriage ceremony.

“Honestly, that should not be. We should be happy that Akwa Ibom is getting united, and we are all better for it,” he said.

Pastor Eno assured the stakeholders, especially Senator Godswill Akpabio, of his readiness to work together with the party’s hierarchy and support the ideology and interest of the party for the overall good of the people of the state.

“I just want to tell our people and the party that I am here to work with you. I am here to contribute to the growth of the party.

“We will work with you and give you that honour that you so rightly deserve.”

Akpabio, who described Eno as a great unifier, a man of foresight and vision, said the governor’s leadership has brought peace and unity to Akwa Ibom and repositioned it for future growth.

The Senate President described Eno’s movement into APC as a merger and not an acquisition, and urged all members to join hands to work for the progress and overall interest of the state.

Lagos LG poll: APC eyes clean sweep amid low turnout

    • Sanwo-Olu hails voters for peaceful conduct

    • Opposition flags late distribution of materials, voter apathy

    • PDP can never win elections in Lagos, says Jandor

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State expects to win all chairmanship and councillorship seats in yesterday’s local government election in the state, according to the spokesperson of the party, Mr Seye Oladejo.

Oladejo expressed the confidence while speaking with newsmen in Agege.

He said the expected victory was based on the party’s performance at the various levels of government.

His view was shared by a member of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), Otunba Henry Ajomale, who said APC’s hold on Lagos remained unshaken.

“We are going to win. There’s no doubt about that,” Ajomale said after casting his vote at Polling Unit 013, Ali Dada, off Ago Palace Way, Isolo.

Early returns from different parts of the state showed that the party was coasting to victory.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in an open letter to Lagosians last night extended appreciation to those who came out to perform their civic duty in the local government elections.

“Your peaceful conduct, sense of responsibility and turnout across polling units have once again demonstrated the true spirit of Lagos — a state built on participation, progress and people-centred governance,” he said.

He particularly commended the youth, elders, market women, artisans, professionals and all stakeholders who “exercised their right to vote with dignity and orderliness.”

He added: “You have shown that democracy will continue to shape leadership when the people actively participate in elections.

“In other words, you reaffirmed that we are truly the Centre of Excellence.”

However, the election recorded a low turnout of voters.

Election materials also got to some polling centres late.

The conduct of the election was generally peaceful.

Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, said he had not received any negative report as at the time he spoke to reporters in Ikorodu.

“So far, so good. The process is very good. There has not been any disturbance of the peace anywhere,” he said.

A member of the State House of Assembly, who is also the Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary, Public Petitions, Human Rights and the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), Oladipupo Ajomale, expressed confidence in APC’s structure and chances despite logistical setbacks and visibly low turnout in some areas.

“The turnout is low, yes, but the APC has done its homework.

“I’m confident my chairman and councillor will emerge victorious.

“Across the state, we are hopeful for clean wins,” he said.

On the performance of LASIEC, the lawmaker noted: “I must be honest with you, the turnout is very, very low.

“It’s unfair to say people weren’t aware. There was even restriction of movement.

“The reality is that people just ignore local government elections, then turn around to say they’re not being represented.”

Adequate security was in place as promised by the police.

Police officers were seen at all the locations visited, including Iyana-Ejigbo, Isolo, Ikotun, Igando, Iba and Isheri.

The Chief of Staff to Lagos State Governor, Mr Tayo Ayinde, attributed the delays to logistic issues.

He spoke with reporters shortly after casting his vote in Polling Unit 014, Ikeja GRA.

He acknowledged that there could be room for improvement going forward in future elections.

According to him, the election was peaceful, and he commended LASIEC for proper organisation.

Ayinde expressed confidence in his party, APC’s success in the election.

He said: “I pray that by the grace of God, our party is going to come out victorious at the end of the day.

“Going by the magnitude of the work and the achievements of this present government in Lagos State, and going by what our council chairmen are doing presently in Lagos State, I think by the grace of God, we will carry the day.”

A commissioner with the Lagos State Local Government Service Commission, Hakeem Bamgbola, hailed LASIEC for organising a peaceful and credible election.

Bamgbola, however, called for more youths engagement and grassroots development.

The Commissioner expressed optimism about the party’s performance, stating: “We are very hopeful, and I can assure you that we are going to win all the positions in the local governments.

“Our party’s candidates will be declared winners.”

He was confident of a clean sweep, but also highlighted critical areas for improvement, particularly concerning voter’s turnout among the youths and the need for robust grassroots development.

Chairman of Apapa-Iganmu Local Council Development Area, Alhaja Funmilayo Akande-Muhammed, said voters’ turnout was impressive in her council.

She lauded LASIEC for staging a free, fair and credible exercise.

She said: “Apapa-Iganmu is a bit different because a larger percentage of residents are actively involved in politics.

“So we take these elections very seriously. Our people turned out well and we are confident in the results.”

APC Candidate in Apapa-Iganmu, Saliu Jimoh, described the poll as nothing short of perfect.

“We’ve seen significant improvements in the election process in Lagos State over time, and today’s conduct is a testament to that progress. It was well-organised and truly commendable,” he said.

According to him, “the turnout has been massive. Anyone who witnessed my rallies would have seen the overwhelming public acceptance I’ve received.”

A member of the State House of Assembly, Femi Saheed (Kosofe 2), commended the peaceful conduct of the exercise, saying it was a reflection of the people’s resolve to vote for the party that has shown empathy, tact and commitment towards improving the lots of Lagosians.

“It is evident that there is development in all facets of life. There is no local government that you cannot see meaningful and landmark development,” he said.

He charged winners of the election to accelerate development in areas such as healthcare, environmental sustainability, accessible and quality health care, standard primary schools and housing schemes that target the poor.

Executive Chairman of Isolo LCDA, Adeboye Olasoju, commended LASIEC’s handling of the election and noted improved participation compared to previous council elections.

“I think this election is better than the last four years, maybe because of the orientation and sensitisation by LASIEC.

“The turnout is not as high as the 2023 election, but it’s better than that of 2021,” he added.

“Our expectations are high. The LASIEC officials are conducting themselves in the highest professional manner, and we hope for the best,” the chairman concluded.

An elderly voter, Chief Adio Hassan, said he expected a peaceful and successful exercise.

“I always make sure I vote because I’m a patriotic citizen. We expect good turnout later despite the late arrival of voters,” he said.

Police Commissioner Jimoh said the command was equally prepared for post election security, adding that adequate arrangements had been put in place to prevent disruptions.

He said the police would not tolerate any activity capable of causing a breakdown of law and order.

“We know that after results are announced, there will be jubilation and, possibly, agitation.

“But we will not allow anyone to blackmail the process or disturb the public peace in any part of the state.

“We are good to go,” he said.

For riverine areas, CP Jimoh said 16 gunboats were deployed by the police to man both urban and rural riverine.

PDP can never win Lagos — Jandor

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Lagos State in 2023, Mr Abdul-Azeez Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, said the party would continue to lose elections in the state because of its weak grassroots structure.

Adediran, who defected to the ruling APC, spoke after casting his vote at Polling Unit 001, Ward D, Irewe, a riverine community in Ojo area.

He said for the PDP to win the state and displace the APC, it needed to work very hard at the grassroots.

He, however, said he did not even see any party displacing APC in the state now or in the future.

“While in the PDP we came with fresh ideas and we did our best but could not make headway, because PDP as a party is rarely known at the grassroots.

“APC as a party in Lagos State has over the years built strong grassroots structures.

“The party is a household name in every community.

“”Based on this, people like us, with a host of followers, joined the train to build on the legacies of previous leaders rather than stay in opposition.

“As it stands, PDP does not have the grassroots stature to contend with APC in Lagos State.

“I salute the President, Asuwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for laying the foundation for the progress of the party in the state as governor,” he said.

Governor Sanwo-Olu and his wife, Ibijoke, voted at St. Stephens Nursery and Primary School, Polling Unit 006, Ward E3, Okepopo, Lagos Island East LCDA, at exactly 11:10 a.m.

Speaking to journalists after he cast his vote, Governor Sanwo-Olu praised the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) for the efficient organisation of the polls.

He said: “As you can see, everything is okay here. Voting is ongoing, the officers are on the ground, and I have just performed my civic responsibility.

“The atmosphere is peaceful, party agents are present, and within three to four minutes, everything is concluded.

“We are glad that we have peaceful weather. We want to commend the effort of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC).

“There was no shortage of materials. The issue was just about getting people to their polling units. But as of now, the reports indicate that most areas have commenced voting.”

Speaking on the importance of local government in the country’s democratic framework, Governor Sanwo-Olu stressed the need for grassroots administration to function independently in accordance with constitutional provisions.

The Governor also commended the performance of chairmen and councillors across the 57 councils, saying they have aligned with the state’s THEMES+ development agenda and are contributing to the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope vision.

He said: “Local government is an important arm of government, and their independence is key.

“Here in Lagos, many of them are executing impactful projects and competing among themselves in terms of development.

“Our councils have keyed into the THEMES Plus agenda and are running with it, even at the LCDA level.

“This shows their commitment to service delivery and grassroots development.”

The lawmaker representing Ikeja Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. James Faleke, on Saturday delivered his polling unit to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the ongoing local government elections in Lagos State.

Faleke voted at Polling Unit 021, located at Olaleke Taiwo/Morgan Junction in Ojodu Local Council Development Area (LCDA), where the APC secured an overwhelming majority in both the chairmanship and councillorship elections.

At the end of voting, results declared showed that the APC polled 162 votes in the chairmanship race, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) managed just 2 votes. The councillorship election was even more decisive, with the APC scoring 163 votes and the PDP getting only 1. There were no void votes in either contest.

Faleke expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct of voters and the professionalism displayed by security personnel at the polling unit. However, he criticized the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) for logistical lapses, saying electoral officials did not arrive at the polling unit until well after midday.

“I commend the voters for their patience and peaceful disposition. But LASIEC must do better. Elections should not start this late,” Faleke said.

A visit to other polling units within Ojodu LCDA showed similar patterns, with the APC coasting to victory in all the units monitored. The exercise was generally peaceful, with concerns over voter apathy.

At Polling Unit 062 (Yakoyo Market), the APC won the chairmanship race with 49 votes, while the PDP got none. Two votes were voided. For councillorship, APC secured 50 votes with one voided ballot.

Polling Unit 009 (Yakoyo Junction) recorded 88 votes for APC and 3 for PDP in the chairmanship contest, with 7 void votes. The councillorship race saw APC polling 87 votes to PDP’s 4, with another 7 voided ballots.

In PU 087 (Olaleke Taiwo), the APC won both elections convincingly, scoring 14 votes in the chairmanship and 14 in the councillorship race. The PDP recorded no votes in either contest, and there were no voided ballots.

At PU 086 (middle of Olaleke Taiwo), the APC secured 10 votes in both the chairmanship and councillorship elections, with PDP scoring zero. There were no voided votes.

Jubilation as Hamzat floors PDP, LP candidates at polling unit

    By Ibrahim Adam

Chairman of Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government and All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Usman Hamzat emerged winner at Polling Unit 027, Ward C1, College Road, Ifako-Ijaiye, where he cast his vote, in yesterday’s local government election.

Jubilant scenes erupted at the polling unit after Presiding Officer, Kareem Aderonke declared Hamzat winner with 335 votes out of 336 valid votes cast among 848 registered voters.

Labour Party (LP) candidate Adedayo Ashade secured one vote, while People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Michael Oloyede recorded no votes.

Voting in Ifako-Ijaiye commenced late, as officials of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) began arriving only at 9:28 a.m., delaying accreditation and voting despite the early turnout of voters from 8 a.m.

Hamzat cast his vote at 10:12 a.m. after arriving at the polling unit with his family at 10:10 a.m.

He expressed confidence in victory despite the late arrival of LASIEC officials.

Speaking after his declaration, Hamzat described voter turnout at his polling unit as satisfactory.

He said voter education had been sufficient despite perceptions to the contrary.

“Well, it’s on the average. If you look at my polling unit now, we have well over 300 voters who came out to vote there. So for me, it’s okay on the average.”

He added that people are generally interested in participating in governance and attributed low participation in some areas to misplaced voter cards and citisens’ perception of local government elections as less important.

“Generally, there’s always a vote in our party, the country generally. People are always interested in being a part of the system and all that. For them saying there is no information or that there was not really much sensitisation on it, I don’t think that is true because I know vividly that INEC and LASIEC organised a lot of sensitisation programmes and engagement with the communities like the Christian Association of Nigeria, the Muslim community, and the youth.

“So, I think some people, a lot of our people, have misplaced their voter cards. Most of them feel because they’ve misplaced it, they cannot vote. I think that’s the major problem. And the fact that people always believe local government is just a local thing and all that, so a lot of our people are not always interested in coming out to discharge their civic responsibility.

“It’s just like when the government said we should register for our NIN and all that; people didn’t go for it. But when they saw that it was going to affect them, they started rushing it. So that’s our system in the country, which is a very bad thing.

“So for me, it’s just the nature of our people. I would just advise that it’s always very important for our people to come out to discharge their civic responsibility by electing into offices their leaders. So that’s my advice to our people,” he said.

On whether full local government autonomy would affect council performance, Hamzat noted that Lagos State local governments already enjoy full autonomy and are performing well.

He said: “Well, first and foremost, since I assumed office, Lagos State local governments have full autonomy. Our funds are always released to us. So for me, and that is why it is majorly in Lagos State that local governments are doing wonderfully well and performing.

“Just recently, we saw a lot of local government chairmen commissioning state-of-the-art public health centres, commissioning road projects and all that. For me, I don’t see it affecting it or anything, but it’s just the people that are not always interested in doing things right. That’s my view about it.”

Meanwhile, Vice Chairman of Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government and APC vice chairmanship candidate Oluwatoyin Awoniyi-Akerele described the election as peaceful and expressed optimism about their re-election.

Awoniyi-Akerele arrived at Polling Unit 023, Ward B, at 11:08 a.m. and voted at 11:23 a.m. She commended the peaceful conduct of the exercise, stating that people were coming out gradually and that all party agents were cooperating.

She said the APC was confident of re-election, having performed well for the community, and assured residents that the administration would continue its good work to deliver the dividends of democracy.

Gbajabiamila cast vote, says opposition coalition healthy for democracy

    By Alao Abiodun

The Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila has exercised his fanchise by voting in the ongoing Lagos State Local Government Election.

Gbajabiamila voted at his polling unit situated at Elizabeth Fowler Nursery and Primary School in Surulere, Lagos.

Addressing journalists, he said: “It’s a welcome development with the coalition. It’s not the first time we’re seeing this. It’s a welcome development. In every democracy, we must have some level of opposition otherwise we’ll run into a one-party state. But I’m not sure where it would go.

“The local government is crucial in any democracy. If the local government system is as effective as desired by the President, it should be the closest to the people at the grassroots, addressing their basic needs.

“On the formation of a coalition, it’s healthy for democracy to have opposition and I am not sure they can go far in achieving their target as the President’s performance towers high.”

EFCC deploys operatives against vote buying

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has warned against vote buying in the ongoing Lagos council poll.

The Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 deployed men on monitoring operations aimed at curbing vote buying and financial inducement across several strategic locations.

The operation marked a significant step in reinforcing public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system, the agency said.

Zonal Director and Chief of Staff to the Executive Chairman, Michael Nzekwe, coordinated the strategic deployment of officers.

He also toured polling units across Lagos Island, Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Lekki, Ajah, Ibeju-Lekki, and Epe Local Government Area.

In polling units such as Bonny Camp, Banana Island, Elegushi, Gbangbala Street, Olushi Kakawa, and various locations along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, the Director ensured real-time oversight and officer compliance with EFCC’s non-interference directive.

Law enforcement agencies on ground welcomed the Commission’s collaboration, noting its critical role in promoting order and discouraging vote trading—a practice that had marred previous elections.

The EFCC reaffirmed its mandate to uphold integrity in public life and reiterated its readiness to continue supporting free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria.

Speaking with reporters after voting, Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that preliminary reports from various parts of the state indicated a smooth and peaceful exercise, with no major incidents recorded.

He urged residents who were yet to perform their civic right to come out and do so, “I encourage everyone who has not voted to go out and cast their vote. This is how we build the kind of leadership we want at the local level,” the governor said.

Low turnout as Temitope Jah yet to vote at Ifako-Ijaiye

    By Raymond Mordi

Hon. Temitope Adewale, widely known as Jah and the current representative of Ifako-Ijaye Constituency 1 at the Lagos State House of Assembly, is yet to cast his vote at Polling Unit 005, located on Jagunmolu Street, Iju-Ishaga

Voting in the area experienced a slow start, with electoral officials and materials arriving behind schedule. As a result, the exercise only commenced at approximately 10:30 a.m. across the unit and other nearby polling centers.

Despite the eventual start of voting, voter turnout remains notably low. Observers attribute the apathy to inadequate mobilisation ahead of the election and a perceived lack of viable opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.

Osolo of Isolo hails voters turnout

    Ekaete Bassey

The Osolo of Isolo Kingdom, Oba Isa Abiodun Olakunle Adejuwon Faronbi-Shekoni Mobadenle Arolagbade Alagbeji III, has commended residents of Isolo for coming out in good numbers to participate in Saturday’s Chairmanship and Councillorship elections in Lagos State.

The monarch cast his vote at exactly 10:58am at Polling Unit 021, located at Ansarudeen College, off Akinbaiye Street, Isolo, describing the turnout as impressive and encouraging.

“Actually, it has been a good response, because what I expected is not what I saw here today,” he said. “We have a very good turnout of voters for today’s exercise, which has been something of encouragement — that people really stood up to their civic responsibility in casting their votes to the desired party of their interests. Everything is going on very well, as expected.”

Oba Faronbi-Shekoni also praised the calm atmosphere and orderly conduct of voters and electoral officials, expressing confidence in a fair outcome.

“The majority of voters I see around here have comported themselves very well. And you can see the environment is peaceful. I believe that the will of the people will prevail and I am sure it’s going to be a fair election at the end of the whole exercise,” he stated.

He added that both LASIEC officials and voters had demonstrated responsibility.

“The way the LASIEC officials have conducted themselves, and the voters as well, they have conducted themselves in a very good manner. So I expect the results to be declared fair, the way I observe the whole exercise,” he said.

However, earlier in the day, an APC party agent, Sebastian Nzekwe, raised concerns over the late arrival of LASIEC officials at some polling units, including PU021, where they were yet to be seen as of 8:52am.

Nzekwe warned that such delays could discourage voters who turned out early with genuine interest in the process.

“If they come out and don’t see any LASIEC officials, they may go back home to sleep, watch TV, or do other things,” he said, urging the government to urgently address such lapses to prevent low voter turnout in future elections.

Hamzat cast vote, confident of re-election at Ifako-Ijaiye

    By Ibrahim Adam

The incumbent Chairman of Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government and All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Usman Hamzat, has expressed confidence in his victory after casting his vote.

Hamzat arrived at Polling Unit 027, Ward C1, College Road at 10:10 a.m. accompanied by his family members.

Voting commenced at 10:12 a.m. after officials of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) arrived late, with the Presiding Officer apologising to political party agents and voters for the late start.

Speaking with journalists shortly after voting, Hamzat said he is confident of victory at the end of the polls.

He said: “Well, as we can see, people are voting. It’s peaceful, and everything is going as planned accordingly. My expectation is for people to come out, cast their votes, and do so in an orderly manner. And by the special grace of God, I believe we’re going to come out victorious.

“No, the fact is that people have seen what the government has been doing, and they’ve been enjoying it. They want more of it, and they feel it’s important to come out and vote for whoever they want to vote for. It’s their civic responsibility, which they are fulfilling, and I am very sure that very soon, the turnout is going to be very massive. That I am very sure of.

“Well, first of all, the message I got from the field was that the LASIEC officials weren’t coming out early enough. But as you can see, they are out now. So, my message to our people is for them to calm down, be peaceful as they have always been, cast their vote, and make sure they also protect their votes.”

The APC Chairmanship candidate, who is seeking re-election for a second term alongside his vice chairmanship candidate, Oluwatoyin Awoniyi-Akerele, is contesting with Michael Oloyede of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Adedayo Ashade of the Labour Party (LP), who are among the top contenders in the election.

Earlier, Hamzat queried the Labour Party (LP) agent for standing behind the electoral officials.

The Labour Party agent explained that he was instructed to stand close to the LASIEC officials to monitor their activities.

A total of 848 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots at the polling unit.

    Delayed Kick-off in Ojodu LCDA

    By Ntakobong Otongaran

The local government elections in Lagos State got off to a sluggish start on Saturday, with several polling units in the Ojodu Local Council Development Area (LCDA) yet to see any electoral activity as at 10:30am.

A visit to five polling units across the LCDA revealed the conspicuous absence of electoral officials and materials.

At PU082 (middle of Irepodun Street), PU034 (Odobo Junction, end of Irepodun), PU042 (along Fadunsin Street), PU017 (Otuyelu Junction, Olanipekun Street), and PU055 (Fadunsin Junction), voters who turned up early were left waiting with no sign of officials from the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC).

At the Ojodu LCDA Secretariat, electoral officials and ad hoc staff were seen loitering the premises with voting materials in hand.

Several of them, who spoke to The Nation on condition of anonymity, expressed confusion about the cause of the delay. They claimed they had been prepared to move to their respective polling units but had yet to receive the necessary go-ahead from superior officers.

Efforts to get a response from the Electoral Officer (EO) for the area proved abortive, as she was reportedly unavailable for comment at the time of filing this report.

The delayed commencement of voting is likely to raise concerns about voter turnout and the general conduct of the election in Ojodu LCDA. LASIEC is yet to issue an official statement on the situation.

At the polling unit where the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmanship candidate, Usman Hamzat, is expected to vote, voters remained on standby, expressing concern over the delay in the electoral process.
