The resolutions of the Upper Chamber followed a motion titled: “Motion for recommittal” sponsored by the Senate Leader Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North).

Abdullahi in his lead debate said the Senate: “Recalls that the Electoral Act No. 6, 2010 (Repeal and re-enactment) Bill, 2021 was passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives.

“Observes that after critical examination of the Bill by the Senate Committee on INEC, some fundamental issues which require fresh legislative action on the following clauses – 43, 52, 63, and 87 were observed.

The approval followed an amendment to Clause 52(3) of the Electoral Act (amendment) Bill by Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi (Niger North) during the consideration of a report by the Senate Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Committee’s had initially recommended in in Clause 52(3) that “The Commission (INEC) may transmit results of elections by electronic means where and when practicable.”

  • No rift between Osinbajo, Tinubu, says Ojudu

No rift between Osinbajo, Tinubu, says Ojudu

Political Adviser to the President Senator Babafemi Ojudu on Monday said there is no rift between Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

He said Osinbajo and Tinubu are in the same political family.

Ojudu also clarified that the vice-president will not make any political move, until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) blows the whistle.

In a statement titled: ‘2023 presidential election: No to divisive politics; attempts to foist a crack between Osinbajo and Tinubu will fail,’ he said there is no gulf between the leader and the vice president.

Ojudu noted the reports and a live television programme where “two persons supposedly representing Asiwaju Support Group and Osinbajo Support Group were pitched against each other.”

He said: “The INEC has not given a go ahead yet for politicking towards 2023.  As a law abiding citizen, Osinbajo will not commence any act in this regard until INEC blows the whistle, and in any case the VP has not indicated interest in the 2023 elections.”

Ojudu clarified that “neither the Vice President nor his office is aware of this or endorse this kind of a divisive engagement and news reports.”

Ruling out any friction, Ojudu said:”Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo are members of same party.  Osinbajo regards Tinubu as a respected leader of a political family to which he belongs and will therefore, not for any reason endorse an endeavor that seeks to pitch them against each other.”

He added:”We are not unaware of some people who may want to foist a crack among our leaders. Such an attempt is abortive. Osinbajo and Tinubu’s relationship dates way back and it shall continue to wax strong.

“Let me therefore call on individuals and media houses engaged in this act to desist from doing so. The APC remains one single, indivisible party and Osinbajo remains a loyal member of the party who respects both the party structure as well as its leadership…

“While appreciating individuals who are clamoring for him to contest, we however want to plead that they should not draw him or allow themselves into an unnecessary and precipitous controversy.

“We welcome our great leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu back into the country. As a great democrat himself, he will certainly welcome politics without bitterness and divisiveness. We wish him good health, long life and prosperity.”

  • Monday sit-at-home continues in Southeast

    Monday sit-at-home continues in Southeast

By Damian Duruiheoma, Enugu; Nwanosike Onu, Awaka; Chris Njoku, Owerri and Sunny Nwakwo, Umuhaia

Less than a week after Southeast governors and leaders resolved to end the Monday sit-at-home by the Indigenous People of Biafra(IPOB), residents of the zone yesterday continued to stay indoors out of fear.

Yesterday’s sit-at-home dubbed ‘Ghost Monday’ was the 9th since it began on August 9.

Many streets and markets were deserted in Enugu, Anambra, Imo, and Abia.

But, Christian clerics in the Southeast, who expressed worry over the “blood and a gloomy cloud”, said they were ready to engage IPOB and other secessionist groups in Igboland in dialogue.

They sought amnesty for the agitators, urging “the political leaders of the Southeast to ensure safety in the region by investing in security”.

The Southeast governors and leaders had resolved last week to do everything within the law to ensure that there was no sit-at-home in the zone. They advised that people should be allowed to move freely.

The meeting also accused Igbos in the Diaspora of issuing the sit-at-home, adding that they did that because they were not feeling the pains of the people at home.

In Enugu, banks, shops, parks, and fuel stations were under lock and key. Some markets and government offices were open, but there was no life in them.

Only few private vehicles and tricycles, popularly known as Keke, were seen on the roads. There were no inter-state movements as transport operators did not operate.

In Awka, capital of Anambra State, traders scampered for safety as gunshots boomed at the popular Eke-Awka Market during the sit-at-home

The shootings forced the traders  and shops at  adjoining streets to abruptly close to avoid being harmed.

The Nation however, gathered that the gunshots were released by a Police team on patrol.

The  Police Command  Public Relations Officer,  Ikenga Tochukwu, confirmed the incident, saying that a man who allegedly attacked the patrol team was arrested.

In Onitsha and Nnewi, banks, markets, and shops were also locked.

The situation was the same in Imo State. Although, some workers, who braced the situation, said they met their offices empty.

A staff of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Anchor Ogbonnaya, said “I took a serious risk. I did not see a single soul along the ever-busy Port Harcourt-Owerri Road. When I got to the school, the situation was worse because nobody reported for work.”

However, some government programmes went on as scheduled. Governor Hope Uzodimma attended a function in Owerri, but not without a heavy security presence.

Aba, the boisterous city in Abia State, was without its usual traffic gridlock yesterday.

When The Nation reporter visited some parts of the city, including the busy Ariaria International Market, only a few persons were seen.

It was gathered that some traders had to lodge their customers from other parts of the country and Africa countries in hotels ahead of the reopening of businesses today.

Commercial banks operating in the city continued to avoid hanging the nation’s flag on their premises.

Bishops seek amnesty for IPOB, others

Christian leaders in the Southeast expressed concern over the violence in the zone.

They promised, in a statement, to engage the agitators in dialogue to stop the “gloomy cloud” in the region.

According to the, the Federal Government must realise that the best instruments to end separatist agitations were equity, justice, and fairness.

The statement was jointly signed by the Catholic Archbishop of Owerri, Most Rev. Anthony Obinna; Anglican Archbishop of Enugu, Most Rev. Emmanuel Chukwuma; the Methodist Archbishop of Umuahia, Most Rev. Chibuzo Opoko and the Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev. Valerian Okeke.

Others include were the  Past Principal Clerk, Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Most Rev  Uma Onwunta; Bishop Obi Onubogu of Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria and Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria ( CAN), Southeast Zone, Rev.Father  Abraham Nwali.

It partly reads: ‘’Our land is soaked with blood and a gloomy cloud hangs in the air. This cannot be allowed to go on.

“As religious leaders of this badly battered zone, we appeal to all those responsible for the killings to please stop, before the entire Southeast descends into anarchy, which will invariably affect the other parts of the country.

“Our political leaders must do something to reduce the huge gulf between their personal welfare and that of the people at large.

“We, therefore, call on the Federal Government to consider granting amnesty to IPOB and other separatist groups.

“We believe that the de-criminalisation and description of these groups would lead them to embrace the democratic and non-violent means of negotiation, thus opening the path of dialogue on the future of Nigeria.

“We also urge those who are still preventing people from going about their legitimate businesses by enforcing a sit-at-home order, for which no group now claims responsibility, to desist from doing so.

“In the same vein, we enjoin all our sons and daughters, especially those in the diaspora, to make responsible use of social media.”

  • Police warn against #EndSARS anniversary protests in Lagos, Osun

Police warn against #EndSARS anniversary protests in Lagos, Osun

By Precious Igbonwelundu, Lagos and Toba Adedeji, Osogbo

Police in Lagos and Osun have warned anyone planning to commemorate the EndSARS anniversary with protests to shelve the idea.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police Hakeem Odumosu advised youths against any protest in honour of last year’s protests.

Millions of young Nigerians between October 8 and 20 last year staged protests across major cities in the country demanding an end to defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) citing its excesses.

The protests which also sought an end to police brutality, corruption, bad governance, among others, turned violent and led to killings and destruction of properties with its climax being the Lekki tollgate shootings of October 20.

It was claimed that hoodlums hijacked it.

To mark the events and also register their displeasure about continued police brutality and extortion, young persons across social media platforms have since last week talked about anniversary protests in Lagos, Delta and some other states of the country.

But Odumosu on Monday warned against any such protests, saying the command would use all lawful means to prevent “misguided elements” from disrupting the peace and serenity being enjoyed in the state.

Police spokesman Adekunle Ajisebutu said the command had credible intelligence on clandestine plans by some youths, individuals or groups to embark on protests in commemoration of the one year anniversary of EndSARS.

He said: “Lagosians and indeed Nigerians cannot afford to relive the distasteful experience of last year’s protest which caused pain, anguish, needless loss of lives and wanton destruction of public and private property.

“In view of the volatility of the present situation in the country, and the breakdown of law and order which the planned protest might cause, the Lagos State Police Command sternly warns against any form of protest today.

“The police will use all legitimate means within their constitutional powers to suppress the planned protest.”

Also, police in Osun called on some youths and groups of people to desist from a planned protest in commemoration of the one-year anniversary of ENDSARS in the state.

Spokesperson Yemisi Opalola said yesterday that police would use every legitimate means to avert such protest, adding that Commissioner of Police Olawale Olokode directed Area commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical units to be at alert and avert any act capable of truncating the peace of the state.

“The Command will not allow a repeat of last year’s EndSARS saga, and is fully prepared to use all legitimate means to avert such protest. Consequently, the Police Command will not tolerate any unlawful protest/gathering or assembly that will jeopardise the peace of the state.”

  • Sacrifice I made for stopping Obasanjo’s third term bid, by Nnamani

Sacrifice I made for stopping Obasanjo’s third term bid, by Nnamani

A former Senate President (April 2005 to May 2007) Ken Nnamani has said he sacrificed his political seat in the Upper Chamber after ensuring the truncation of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo’s plan to earn a third term in 2006.

Although Obasanjo has repeatedly denied involvement in the plan to amend the constitution and get an extra term, Nnamami said senators elected on the platform of then-ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were promised automatic tickets in the 2007 elections, if they voted in favour of the bid.

In his newly released book, titled: Standing Strong: Legislative Reforms, Third Term and Other Issues of the Fifth Senate, Nnamani wrote on the clandestine meetings that were held to push the third term agenda.

He shared the excerpts with TheCable. The Senate dropped the proposed amendment on May 16, 2006 after a voice vote.

“In my own case, my re-election to the Senate was foreclosed because I was marked out as the principal figure among those that ended the infamous project,” Nnamani said.

The former Senate President said he knew he would not be given a level-playing field in the party’s primary; so, “I opted to take the high road and stay out of the contest”.

Promises, he said, were made before the Senate voted on the project.

Nnamani said proponents of the third term project promised to give straight tickets to the National Assembly lawmakers.

According to him, huge sums of money were offered to the lawmakers to back the third term agenda.

The former Senate President said he rejected all offers, like many others, adding that “it was the least sacrifice” he could make to ensure that the constitution amendment process “was not abused”.

He added: “We lost the opportunity of continuing with a crop of lawmakers who had gained experience in the culture of legislation but who were brazenly denied their party’s ticket because they stood against autocracy.

“The political party system, as nurtured by Obasanjo, was one where the party and the governors were in the pouch of the President and from the comfort of his bedroom he decided who went where,” he wrote.

President Muhammadu Buhari will be the special guest of honour at the public presentation of the book on Thursday in Abuja, while a former Army Chief, Theophilus Danjuma, will be the chairman.

We are decapitating opposition in South East – APC

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) said that it has eroded the stronghold and decapitated the opposition parties in the southeast with the glee of defections of their members.

Chairman APC Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) Governor Mai Mala Buni stated this on Monday in Abuja while inaugurating the nine-man National Reconciliation Committee (NRC) of the party led by former Nasarawa Governor, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu.

Buni said: “Today, the southeast geo-political zone, hitherto referred to as the stronghold of opposition parties, is gradually melting into the APC and increasing the fortunes of APC to remain Nigeria’s leading political party.”

He said the development was a manifestation of his November 24, 2020 projection that APC will shock the political space with massive and unprecedented defections ever witnessed in the political history of our great country.

The APC Chairman noted that since the caretaker committee came on board on June 25, 2020, the party has progressed significantly with purposeful and productive leadership that promoted justice, equity, fair play and genuine reconciliation.

He maintained that every party member now has a true sense of belonging, confidence, and trust in the party.

On the ongoing membership drive, the chairman said that the party recorded over 40 million members during the recently conducted nationwide membership registration and revalidation exercise by the party.

The chairman then said the fallout of the just conducted congresses, informed the setting up of the National Reconciliation Committee to reconcile emerging misunderstandings and differences which might arise from the outcome of the exercises.

According to him, the Adamu-led nine-man committee “is to reconcile, harmonise, integrate and unite members of the party. It is also expected to resolve real or seeming differences and to cement all cracks for us to approach the National Convention with a united front.”

Members of the committee include Otunba Moses Adeyemo, who will serve as Secretary while members are Sen. George Akume, H.E Sullivan Chime, H.E. Ali Saad Birnin Judy, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, Alh. Suleiman Argungu, Dr. Mrs. Oluranti I. Adebule, and Dr. Mrs. Beta Edu.

JUST IN: Buhari opens Ministers’ performance retreat amid ‘sack’ speculations

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday declared open a two-day mid term ministerial performance review retreat in Abuja amid rumours of likely ‘sack’ of some more of his Ministers for poor performance.

The retreat, which is being attended by Ministers, Permanent Secretaries and other top government officials, is an annual event convened to assess the performances of top functionaries of the administration.

President Buhari, on September 1, during the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, announced the sack of two of his Ministers.

They were then Minister of Power, Engr. Saleh Mamman and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Alhaji Sabo Nanono, informing others that the action would be a continuous one.

Presidency sources, however, have suggested that the President may be waiting for the outcome of the ongoing assessment process to determine his next step, which may involve easing more of his cabinet members, whose performance and conducts would not meet the administration’s standards, out of office.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the ongoing performance review retreat at the State House Conference Hall, President Buhari said he would stay throughout the two-day event to listen to all cumulative assessments over the last two years and some months.

“Two years and some months into the second term, the tradition of subjecting our projects and programs implementation to independent and critical self-review has taken firm roots through sector Reporting during Cabinet meetings and at Retreats,” he added.

President Buhari noted that idea of the assessment is to identify weak areas with a view to strengthening the ability of government to deliver the goods to the people.
