JAMB: Another Nmesoma breaks UTME record in Anambra school

Obiora-Nwokedi Nmesoma, a candidate of the just concluded 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) has broken record as the student with the highest score in her school.

Nmesoma, a student of Queens Convent Awka, Anambra state, owned by the Anglican church scored 343 in the resit exercise scheduled by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

She had scored 165 in the botched controversial version, which the exam body had blamed on technical glitches in the system.

Many students were reportedly traumatised by the ugly development, including the girl that allegedly took her life.

Speaking exclusively to our correspondent, Principal of the school, Dr Martha Ibezim attributed Nmesoma’s feat to the school’s commitment to academic excellence and holistic student’s development.

She also linked the outstanding performance to the school’s dedicated faculty, state-of-the-art facilities and rigorous preparatory programs.

According to Ibezim, the victory had not only secured the student a bright future, but had brought pride to the school, reinforcing its reputation as a leading institution for academic and personal growth.

She said: “Initially scoring a disheartening 165 in the exam due to reported glitches in the JAMB system, Nmesoma refused to let this define her.

“When given the opportunity to resit the exam, she soared to an outstanding score of 343, proving her academic prowess and showcasing the exceptional preparation provided by her school.

“Nmesoma’s journey began like that of many ambitious students across Nigeria, with dreams of excelling in the highly competitive UTME to secure a place in a top university.

“A star pupil known for her consistent academic excellence, Nmesoma was shocked when her initial JAMB score of 165 did not reflect her capabilities.

“The low mark, attributed to technical glitches in the JAMB system, could have discouraged even the most determined student.

“But Nmesoma, fortified by the unwavering support of her teachers and the robust academic foundation at Queens Convent Awka, remained undeterred.”

    • Death toll rises to 153
    • Trailer drivers count losses

‘’I went to look for food and came home to meet no home. I lost nine  of my children,’’ lamented Isa Daban, an indigene of one of the three Mokwa communities in Niger State ravaged by  floods late last week.

Another indigene , Musa Ismaila, who described  the  floods as devastating, said a building with 80 Almajiri was swept away.

‘’A lot of the people involved were children. An  Almajiri house with over 80 children was washed away,’’ he lamented.

Daban’s and Ismaila’s narratives were some of the most touching  heard by The Nation reporter who visited Angwan Hausawa and Ndayako, two of the .the affected  communities  yesterday.

Daban, with teary eyes, showed our reporter the spot where his house once stood.

He said:  “I do not stay in Mokwa. I usually go and come back every weekend. When I heard about the flood, I rushed home and this is what I met (pointing at a spot). I went to look for food and came home to meet no home.”

Ismaila, who   said the rain which began without notice,  quickly led to  a ‘’powerful’’ flood that  swept people,  houses, farmlands away.

His words: “The damage is very devastating. A lot of people involved were children.

‘’An  Almajiri house with over 80 children was washed away. Farms and their crops were washed away, many businesses were also  lost. There is really nothing left.’’

He also lamented the condition of the survivors, who according to him, “are sleeping in the open  with  no adequate food.’’

Ismaila added: ‘’Many of the survivors  have been  wearing the  same clothes since Thursday. There are some people hospitalised while several families are still looking for their loved ones. This is a serious emergency.”

Jubrin Alhassan  painted a painful picture of how  his uncle  would have  to live with the pains for the remaining days of   his life.

“Seventeen of my uncle’s sons and daughters were buried in my presence,”  he said.

His   uncle, Usman Kontagora; his  aunty, Nnagi Zuwaira, and another family member whose name Alhassan  did not give,  are among scores of  residents still missing.

‘’The whole building of my uncle was swept off  to the extent that even a spoon was not recovered. Today (yesterday)  marks  four days Fidau prayers of our loved ones,”  he added.

The Nation gathered  that more lives would have been lost but for  a ‘’railroad decking’’  that  held flood waters from entering some  houses before it broke down

Also, Mokwa youths  braved the floods by  rescuing  some people from their buildings.

A   video showed a youth rescuing a blind old man from the decking of a house.

However, not everyone captured in the video  was lucky.    Some children on the decking which eventually collapsed were swept away.

Isaac Eneayiajo, manager of a printing company affected by the incident, said:  “We   came here but  could not see our building or anything that has to do with our business. We do not know what to  do.

‘’Majority of us are family members. What happened will not be easy for us.’’

    • Death toll rises to 153

Niger State   Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) confirmed that the   death toll  rose  to 153,  following the recovery of    more bodies.

“More  dead bodies were recovered on Saturday under the bridge. They were buried this (Sunday) morning,’’   said  the agency’s spokesperson Husseini Ibrahim, in an update on the tragedy.

The update partly reads: ‘’In    Mokwa town, the death is 153, 3,018 affected population, 503 affected households, 11 persons injured, three bridges washed off.

“In Ndayako communuty, there was no death, 98 population affected, 58 houses affected and 17 households affected. In Raba, there was no death, five houses affected, one bridge  washed away.”

The  deputy governor, Yakubu Garba,  had on Saturday told a Federal Government delegation that there was  need for an emergency temporary camp for the displaced persons.

Garba said that support in cash and in kind  would go a long way to address the challenges faced by the affected persons.

He added  that a dedicated account had been opened by the state government for the flood victims.

Yakubu told the team that people  living close to flood plains had been directed to vacate to prevent future incidents.

The Federal Government delegation was led by  Information Minister Mohammed Idris and his  Humanitarian Affairs counterpart,   Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda.

    • Niger Govt reassures survivors

Secretary to the   State Government(SSG) Abubakar   Gawu called on the people to trust the government in helping the flood victims.

He said: “This unfortunate disaster has affected numerous homes and individuals, and the government remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting affected families and communities.

‘’The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), in collaboration with local authorities and volunteers, continues to work around the clock to provide relief to the affected people.

“While we share in the pain of every family that has been affected, we urge members of the public to remain calm and sensitive in their communications, particularly on social media and other platforms. This is a time of mourning and collective grief for us as a state as spreading unverified or sensational information only adds to the sorrow and confusion already being experienced.

“The government calls on all citizens to cooperate with relevant authorities and to trust in the ongoing response efforts. We also appeal to the conscience of all Nigerlites to prioritise unity, compassion, and factual reporting during this challenging time.”

    • Trailer drivers count losses

Bida – Mokwa Road, which  for two days was blocked because of the floods  was free as of 12 noon yesterday.

The development doused fear of food and livestock scarcity in the South ahead of with Sallah.

The road  is  one of the major highways  that link the North  and  the South.

A  trailer  driver, Muktar Yusuf,  who said he slept at    ‘’Mokwa garage till today (yesterday) because of traffic jam,’’ described his experience as ‘’unpalatable.’’

He added:   ‘’I lost two rams. Heat  and lack of water killed them. Several of us carrying animals had to offload to ensure that they did  not die even though most of us still lost some animals.

“The drivers who suffered more were those carrying tomatoes and watermelon.Several of them got spoilt because these things do not stay for long.”

Muktar, however, said  he was happy that he could continue his journey to the South.

How Medipool will crash prices of medicines, by Pate

Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Ali Pate has explained how Medipool plan will crash prices of medicines and pharmaceuticals.

In a video made available at the weekend, Pate said procurement of medicines in bulk by the government in a public-private partnership arrangement will reduce the high cost of medicines and consumables.

He said: “Medipool is an innovative group purchasing organization created to shape our domestic market by organising and activating real demand, negotiating competitive pricing, ensuring quality, and enabling efficient supply chain management.

“It will also offer predictable offtake for local manufacturers of essential medicines and healthcare products”, he said.

According to him, the Medipool platform will initially serve Nigerians through the Basic supports over 37 million citizens access services in Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) across the country.

He said: “Eventually, Medipool will expand to include Federal tertiary hospitals and the private sector.”

He said the scheme aligns with broader reforms under the Presidential Initiative to Unlock the Healthcare Value Chain (PVAC), which seeks to boost local production of pharmaceutical products to 70 per cent of domestic consumption.

Besides, the scheme will also boost employment in the sector to at least 50,000 full-time jobs from the current estimate of 20,000.

“These are not theoretical steps or abstract policies. These are concrete actions we are currently implementing,” he noted.

Highlighting the critical role played by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in creating an enabling environment for local manufacturing, Pate cited the June 2024 Executive Order which provided tariff waivers on raw materials for pharmaceutical production and other essential health products.

The minister said: “That giant step encouraged international financiers to look towards Nigeria. The European Investment Bank has identified significant opportunities in local medical supplies manufacturing.

“Similarly, AfriExim Bank has earmarked at least $1 billion to facilitate supply-side growth in pharmaceuticals, biologics, and essential medical devices in Nigeria.”

He, however, underscored the importance of not just increasing supply but also stimulating domestic demand to ensure a well-balanced, sustainable ecosystem for health product manufacturing.

“If we get this right and regulate it appropriately, Nigeria will not only build a healthier healthcare market but also play a leading role in shaping healthcare outcomes across the African continent,” he stressed.

Citing the recently inaugurated Codex Bio Ltd Rapid Diagnostic Test Kit Production Complex in Ogun State as one of the tangible results of the new strategy, the minister added that the plant has capacity to produce over 147 million test kits annually for diseases such as HIV, malaria and hepatitis.

Pate said Codex Bio had become the first African manufacturing partner under the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Health Technology Access Pool (HTAP), in partnership with SD Biosensor of South Korea and the Medicines Patent Pool (MPP).

He said: “This is a transformative leap for Nigeria, it positions Codex Bio at the forefront of rapid diagnostic test production in Africa and strengthens global health security.”

The minister also cited the newly commissioned Betalactam facility in Lagos, developed by Jawa Investments Ltd, as another major milestone, noting that the facility will produce essential antibiotics like amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, bringing Nigeria closer to self-sufficiency and potentially lowering costs for consumers.

“These developments are being driven by Nigeria’s resilient private sector,” he said.

He listed Emsos Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) plant; Fitsins Pharmaceuticals expansion; Naseni Fromant Diagnostics and Ash Biomedical among other upcoming ventures.

“These efforts reflect the entrepreneurial spirit Nigerians are known for. They are responding to policy reforms that the federal government has undertaken,” Pate added.

By reiterating the administration’s commitment to transforming the health sector into a catalyst for national development, the minister stressed.

“All of this is possible because we elected a President who understands business and prioritizes health as a core pillar for the development of our nation.”

The minister praised his Federal Executive Council (FEC) colleagues for their support.

He listed them as former Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite (now Minister of State for Finance), Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Ministers Jumoke Oduwole and former Minister for Women Affairs, Mrs. Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye.

22 firms get N16.1b in first tranche of N75b relief loan

Twenty-two companies have benefitted from the N75 billion manufacturing sector fund earmarked by the Federal Government as loans for local manufacturers, The Nation learnt at the weekend.

The loan is being disbursed by the Bank of Industry (BoI) to beneficiaries at nine per cent annual interest rate.

Investigation showed that N16.1 billion had been disbursed to the 22 manufacturers to shore up their production base and expand their distribution lines.

In December 2023, the Federal Government unveiled the Presidential Conditional Grant Scheme, a Programme aimed at supporting businesses to navigate the economic crunch caused by reforms, especially the stoppage of subsidy payment of petrol and the consolidation of foreign exchange (forex).

Apart from the manufacturers’ N75 billion vote in the scheme, the government also earmarked another N75 billion to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

The disbursements of the funds had been delayed by government bureaucratic processes.

“The government is doing all it can to ultimately drive economic growth, support production distribution in the manufacturing sector”, an insider’s source told our reporter.

The Manufacturers’ Association of Nigeria (MAN) confirmed the disbursements of the funds to its members.

In a statement, the association said: “The Federal Government has begun the disbursement of N75 billion loans to manufacturers fourteen months after announcing the plan.

“The disbursement is through the Bank of Industry at a nine per cent annual interest rate, the loan is to help larger companies navigate the current economic crunch and cope with production and operations costs.”.

BoI’s Managing Director Olasupo Olusi said N200 billion presidential intervention fund has been set up to support MSMEs and manufacturing enterprises to drive economic growth and enhance job security stating that MSMEs contribute significantly to innovation, economic growth and job creation across the agriculture, manufacturing, and services sectors.

Olusi added that with the immense contribution to economic growth, MSMEs is still struggling to access the necessary funding to reach its full potential.

The Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on MSMEs, Temitola Adekunle Johnson, also confirmed the disbursement of the single-digit loan to small businesses.

There was an agreement between the federal government and BoI to support 75,000 MSMEs with N1 million each as loan.

The pact allows MSMEs to approach the bank with business proposals for credit facilities.

“It is a single-digit loan with nine per cent annual interest. It is fixed and there are no hidden charges,” the source said.

    • Stranded passengers recount ordeal

The food supply chain from the north to the southwest is under massive threat in the aftermath of Wednesday night’s destructive rain and the resultant flood that swept away the Mokwa Bridge in Niger State.

The death toll in the tragedy was put at 151 yesterday by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

President Bola Tinubu ordered the immediate activation of the National Emergency Response Centre to take care of displaced persons whose number was put at 3,018.

Hundreds of trailers laden with pepper, tomatoes, onions, yams, potatoes, rams, goats and cows remained stuck at the Mokwa end  of the bridge yesterday, sparking anxiety in the Southwest about possible sharp increase in prices of those items.

Demand for the food items and livestock is especially high around this time of the year when Muslims are preparing for the Eid el Kabir.

The festival is scheduled for Friday, June 6 across the world.

Some of the trailer drivers and owners of the goods yesterday openly lamented that highly perishable stuff like pepper and tomatoes were already rotting.

Some of the rams and cows were also in terrible conditions occasioned by insufficient food and water.

    Some have also dropped dead.

The social media were awash with dire messages from some of the stranded drivers and passengers advising housewives to manage whatever quantity of pepper they currently have.

Search and rescue operation extended far beyond the epicentre of the flooding yesterday, which led to the recovery of more bodies.

Spokesman of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Ibrahim Audu Husseini, confirmed that the death toll had now reached 151.

A total of 503 households were affected and 265 physical houses damaged or washed away.

At the last count, 3,018 people were displaced.

He said: “Upon receiving initial reports, I immediately directed the activation of the National Emergency Response Centre.

“I have also been briefed by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on the scale of the disaster and the urgent humanitarian needs.

“Search-and-rescue operations are ongoing, and all relevant federal agencies have been mobilised to support the state government’s efforts.

“Relief materials and temporary shelter assistance are being deployed without delay. We will ensure that no Nigerian affected by this disaster is left behind or unheard of.

“I assure all those impacted that your government stands with you. We will continue to coordinate with the Niger State Government to ensure a swift, coordinated and compassionate response, one that prioritises lives, restores dignity and accelerates recovery.

“I call on all Nigerians to keep our fellow citizens in Mokwa in our thoughts and prayers. In times of adversity, we draw strength from our unity, resilience and shared humanity.

“I have also directed our security agencies to assist in the emergency efforts while NEMA and the National Emergency Response Centre have been tasked with coordination and providing updates as necessary.”

President sends high power delegation to Minna

The President also dispatched a high power delegation led by Information and National Orientation Minister Mohammed Idris to the state.

Also on the delegation was Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Minister Nentawe Yilwatda.

The team was received by Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba on behalf of Governor Mohammed Bago.

Idris said the President was personally saddened by the disaster and had directed that every available resources of the government be deployed to assist the state.

“President Tinubu has activated every government agencies to ensure what needed to be done is done,” he said.

He said the situation should be regarded by the people as a “warning against future occurrence.” He added: “Those living in those areas need to be properly educated.

“In that direction, President Tinubu has also asked the National Orientation Agency to immediately embark on a campaign around the community and other communities across the country to sensitise the people on the dangers of living in areas that are prone to such disaster.

“The agency is also to enlighten and educate them on steps to be taken in the event that such a disaster occurs again.”

Also speaking, Yilwatda said: “Nigerians stand by you, our hearts and prayers are with you at this difficult moment.

“We will review activities carried out so far and work with the Refugees Commission and see the kind of support we can give for displaced communities; we will see how we can support them especially farmers whose farms have been washed away.

“We will try to restore livelihoods of the people who have lost their means of livelihoods; we will also look at details of areas of needs and go back to the President and see what further support can be provided.”

Responding, Garba, appreciated Tinubu and the delegation, describing their visit as timely.

The Deputy Governor solicited an emergency camp for the displaced persons.

He said a dedicated account had been set up for the victims and advised those still living in the flood plains to vacate immediately to avoid a reoccurrence of the disaster.

He said: “About 151 dead bodies were recovered and buried, 3, 018 people were displaced, 11 people were injured and 503 households were affected and still counting.

“265 houses were affected within Mokwa, three communities within Mokwa Local Government Area, two roads and three bridges were washed away.

“Hence the need for quick intervention to restore the livelihoods of the people. The rescue team includes NEMA, SEMA, IOM, Red Cross, traditional leaders and Ja’matul Islamic,

“However, we cannot ascertain the exact cause of the flood, but advise the people living at river bank to take precautionary measures.”

Speaking to reporters at the end of the meeting, Professor Yilwatda said the federal government and the states were collaborating to stem the tide of such disasters in the country.

“We’ve come to live with climate change, and climate change makes it unpredictable for you to accurately predict natural disasters, and that is why we are having this problem. This is a very big tragedy and the federal government sees it as such,” he said.

Continuing, the minister said: “Floods are natural disasters, but the humans also have their own action to take to mitigate such.

“There are areas of man-made that will need to be cautioned. But of course, this federal government and the state governments are in collaboration to ensure that we reduce this menace to the barest minimum.

“As of April 2025, the federal government opened a bid for the construction of storm water drainage in Mokwa specifically and Mashegu.:

“The bid has been opened, the selection is ongoing. In the nearest days, not even up to a month, you will see contractors actually mobilizing to the site. That is our hope.”

“This is a disaster that has happened too many times. And it is just the beginning of the rainy season. We don’t wish anything worse than this to happen, but we also have to take steps to ensure that we mitigate the reoccurrence of this kind of tragedy.

“People have to be very clear that issue of nature cannot be predicted sometimes. We have to be cautious so that we can stay away from the water banks.”

On the gridlock on the Mokwa road as a result of the flood,  the Minister said that the federal government has activated a remedial action preparatory to a more permanent solution to be made so that there will not be a complete breakdown of movement of people and groups along that area.

He  acknowledged the efforts of Engineer Ronald Chagoury in coastal protection, noting that his intervention helped avert a major environmental disaster in Lagos.

“I said that we would do it, and we did. We averted a disaster greater than a tsunami in Victoria Island and Ikoyi,” Tinubu said.

He appealed to Nigerians  for continued patience and optimism, citing early signs of economic recovery, including exchange rate stability and declining food prices.

Akpabio to Govs: How not to pick your successors

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, speaking at the Lagos event, advised second term state governors  to prioritise vision over loyalty in picking their successors.

He said governors who base their choice of successor on those who kneel down for them usually end up being betrayed after handing over.

He said: “We have a president who has both sight and vision. And this for me is something I must advise our governors, particularly those of them who are in their second term. Do not give power to anybody who is not looking for power.

“Don’t give power to anybody who is not prepared. Don’t go hiding in your heart that this boy is very subservient; he is always kneeling when he is talking to me, his wife is always rolling on the floor, I think I should make this one the governor.

“If you do that, you are giving power to somebody who is not prepared for governance and they will disappoint you. This is where betrayals normally start. I am just trying to give some advice.

“For the progressive governors, I believe that all of you are doing well because you are being led by a man who has both sight and vision.”

At the commissioning were Governors Jide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos),Bassey Out (Cross River),Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Hope Uzodimma (Imo),Monday Okpebholo (Edo),Usman Ododo (Kogi),Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, Works Minister Dave Umahi, Finance Minister Wale Edun, Budget Minister Atiku Bagudu, and Deputy President of the Senate Barau Jibrin, among others.

EFCC slams Emefiele with fresh charges over 753 Abuja housing units

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has filed fresh charges against the embattled former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele.

The charges, filed before a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja, allege that Emefiele unlawfully acquired a housing estate comprising 753 units, and allegedly stole and controlled billions of naira in proxy accounts.

The EFCC, in the charge marked CR/350/25 and dated Friday, May 30, 2025, accused Emefiele of colluding with one Eric Ocheme, who is reportedly at large, to acquire the property and monies.

The property is stated to be located at Plot 109, Cadastral Zone C09, Lokogoma District, FCT, Abuja.

It spans 150,462.86 square metres and comprises 753 housing units.

The EFCC previously recovered the estate from an unnamed former senior government official and obtained a forfeiture order on the property from the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Apo, Abuja.

Emefiele, through his lawyer, A.M. Kotoye (SAN), filed a motion as an interested party in the case.

The court in its judgment however dismissed Emefiele’s motion.

Dissatisfied, he appealed the decision at the Court of Appeal in Abuja, seeking to overturn the High Court’s forfeiture order.

The estate has now been handed over to the Federal Government, which has disclosed plans to sell it to low and middle income Nigerians.

Emefiele however filed a notice of injunction, urging the government to refrain from taking further action on the property until his appeal was heard.

The EFCC, in an eight-count charge naming Emefiele as the sole defendant, alleged that he knowingly controlled property reasonably suspected to have been unlawfully acquired.

The charges also claimed violations under Section 319(A) of the Penal Code Law, Cap. 89, Laws of the Federation, 1990.

    • Stakeholders worry over preparation for June 30 NEC meeting, national convention

The unresolved dispute over the rightful national secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is slowing down preparations for  the June 30 National Executive Committee (NEC)  meeting of the party and the August 28 national convention, it was gathered yesterday.

Although the Bukola Saraki-led Strategy and Reconciliation Committee set up by the PDP to help bring the various warring factions together has met with some of the key actors, sources said the pace of reconciliation must be hastened.

At the centre of the dispute are incumbent national secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Mr. Sunday Ude-Okoye nominated by the South East Zone of the party to replace Anyanwu.

Ude-Okoye also enjoys the backing of the party’s Governors’ Forum.

Bayelsa State Governor Duoye Diri informed the PDP hierarchy recently that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recognises only Anyanwu as the party never informed the electoral body of any replacement for the national secretary.

This seems to have put the governors in a fix about the dispute.

However, the Saraki team is hopeful that the situation can be stabilised soon.

Mr. Yusuph Olaniyonu, spokesman for Senator Saraki, told The Nation that the committee was making progress in its assignment.

“You could see the progress made with the peaceful national caucus meetings held last week,” Olaniyonu said.

He cited “the mature manner in which the grievance of the South East caucus was resolved.”

The Nation gathered that anti-Anyanwu forces in the party are unrelenting in sidelining him and his office ahead of the NEC meeting and the national convention.

Sources from two states in the South East and North Central geo-political zones told of plan to pick 10 members of the National Convention Planning Committee from each state as part of the efforts to settle the issues in dispute.

One of the sources warned that any attempt to sideline Anyanwu may lead to fresh legal battles.

Said the source: “Anyanwu and others around FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, often keep quiet while some party leaders who are against them stumble into potential legal self-entrapment and later, when the consequences become clearer in court, it looks as if Wike has a magic wand there.

“Go through the PDP constitution and see whether it is possible in any way to sideline the National Secretary in the planning of a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting or the national convention.”

Section 36 of PDP’s Constitution describes the National Secretary as  “the Chief Administrative and Accounting Officer of the Party” and lists his responsibilities as follows: conducts or directs the conduct of the correspondence of the Party and causes to be issued notices of meetings of the National Convention, the National Executive Committee, the National Caucus and the National Working Committee.

“Keeps or causes to be kept, all records of proceedings of the National Convention, the National Executive Committee, the National Caucus and the National Working Committee, as well as other records of the Party.

“Renders a written annual report of the activities of the Party to NEC, and National Convention; (e) ensure the implementation of the decisions and directives of the National Convention, National F x e c u t i v e Committee, National Caucus and the National Working Committee, and ensure that all units of the Party carry out their duties promptly and efficiently.”

In the communiqué issued by the PDP NEC at the end of its May 27 in Abuja, the party announced the composition of a committee on national convention headed by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State.

Also ratified at that meeting was the composition of a committee on the zoning of national offices headed by Governor Diri.

It acknowledged receipt of a resolution from South East stakeholders for the consideration of Ude-Okoye as National Secretary at the next PDP NEC meeting scheduled for Monday, June 30, 2025.

Anyanwu was not part of the meeting.

He told reporters that he would not concede to any form of marginalization within the PDP.

“I will not take it, if anybody ridicules me, I will never tolerate it for any reason; all the positions that everybody is having now, in the next two years, many will no longer hold,” he said

“It (party crisis) is a man-made thing, up to the extent of sponsoring party staff to choose whom they want to back (for position of National Secretary); that is very, very low, it’s a very low thing to do but I will not give in to anybody trying to mess me up or mess up my (political) career,” Anyanwu had stated while noting that the Supreme Court explicitly declared him as PDP National Secretary.

A party leader, Dr. Peter Ihembe said the PDP NWC’s adoption of the PDP Governors’ Forum’s April 14 recommendation to appoint Deputy National Secretary Setonji Koshoedo in an acting capacity pending the NEC’s ratification of Udeh-Okoye as National Secretary was in order.

However, Dr. Willie Amadi who dismissed the recent PDP NEC meeting as ‘illegal’ because party constitutional procedures were not followed, accused  some PDP stakeholders of  precipitating “cataclysms” that could enable FCT Minister  Nyesom Wike  to inherit what is left of the party.

He said: “I wonder if the Governors Forum of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) realises that they have practically and politically shot themselves in the foot by convening a fathom NEC meeting of the party without the legal notice from the incumbent National Secretary of the party.

“I am really upset about this childish display and grandstanding in the PDP, because as a former 1st State Vice-Chairman and Chairman, Owerri Senatorial Zone who joined the party in  the year 2000, I have  emotional concerns for this party that provided and nurtured the platform for my  success in politics, besides having many friends and allies still in the party.

“The various groups, namely Damagun who is also a suspect, Secondus, Atiku, Wike, Saraki, Mohammed, Makinde, are all propelled by their selfish presidential  and  governorship ambitions, using Sen. Samuel Anyanwu’ case as a cannon fodder to fight their proxy war.

“But knowingly or unknowingly, they are freely preparing a delicious hot pot of “ógbònò-ewedu soup” for PBAT to use in swallowing his 2027 election amala; this is the local common denominator (LCM) for APC come 2027,” Amadi, a lawyer emphasised in a statement.

In a separate interview with The Nation, PDP chieftain, Segun Showunmi said regardless of internal opposition to Anyanwu, PDP leadership could not reject the Supreme Court’s judgment recognising him as the rightful National Secretary, except some people want further crises ahead.

“I have said it before and I am stating it now, the strength of one million persons does not weigh half as much as the actual pronouncement of the court,” he said while stressing that disregard of the Supreme Court’s backing for Anyanwu and his authority as National Secretary may endanger PDP if any such matter is taken before the courts.
