    The Senate has said that the passage of the four Tax Reform Bills now awaiting harmonization by the Senate and House of Representatives were aimed at the economic prosperity of the country by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

    The Chairman Senate Committee on Finance, Senator Mohammed Sani Musa (APC-Niger East), made this assertion while answering questions from reporters after the passage of the Bills by the Senate last Thursday.

    Musa also disclosed that the proposal to tax family income and inheritance in one of the Bills, which had generated heated debate, has been expunged from the Bills passed by the Senate.

    He said the action became necessary to give every section of the country a sense of belonging.

    Speaking during the press briefing on how the Senate passed the Bills, Musa said: “Mine is very short because the Senate has done justice to what a lot of people think is not going to be possible.

    “What we have done between yesterday and today, we have passed the four tax reform bills.

    “The Nigerian Revenue Service Establishment Bill, the Nigerian Tax Administration Bill, the Joint Tax Board Establishment Bill, and the Nigerian Tax Bill. We have passed all these four bills, in which all these four bills, in one way or the other, are interconnected.

    “The objective of these bills is to streamline our tax administration, to make it possible that our taxes and operations meet international best practices.

    “What we have done is to see that we are able to meet with the targets of our counterparts in the OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) and you can see the tax to GDP ratio in Nigeria, what it is today, compared to what it is in countries like South Africa, Kenya, and others.

    “So what we did was to look at these tax bills and do the needful. These tax bills, when they were presented by His Excellency, the President of this country, President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, he brought them with one aim, and to see how there will be economic prosperity.”

    He said while taxes maybe inadequate to develop a nation, they are an important segment in raising finances to develop a country.

    “We all know taxes are not enough to develop a nation. But taxes are a very important segment to developing a nation, because without money, without prudence and justifiable source of any money or revenue, you will not be able to get to meeting all those appropriated projects,” Musa said.

    On how the bills were passed despite initial opposition from some parts of the country, he said they ensured that all critical stakeholders, including religious leaders, were part of the process of amending the Bills.

    “So we had a public hearing. After the public hearing, we had a retreat where we interacted with stakeholders and professionals.

    “We had almost 76 organisations that attended all our engagements with them, and the Ulamas were not left out of it. The same thing with the Christian Association of Nigeria.

    “The Islamic Sharia Council was well represented, and the League of Imams was represented, and civil society organisations, too.

    “They presented their cases. The OPTS (Oil Producers Trade Section), operators of the oil and gas industries, were there. The export processing zones made their presentations, and we considered, after taking about a week of deliberations at the retreat, we sat and consulted with our consultants.

    “After that, the committee now sat to come out with these bills, as proposed bills, which today they have been passed, and I believe that Mr. President will do justice to them.

    “What we did in these bills, we have created the Nigerian Revenue Service with an executive vice chairman and a non-executive chairman, and we said the Nigerian Revenue Service would need not least six executive directors. The President said to me that they have 14 directors.

    “But we feel, since we are trying to meet international standards, we should do it in the right way and we tried to build a kind of strong corporate governance because when you are talking about streamlining, when you are talking about a single window of taxes, revenue, levies, whatever you call it, coming into the purse of government, we need a very strong corporate governance.

    “For that, we said the President needs to appoint a chairman and ex officio representatives who will be representing the various ministries that have to do with either the physical or the monetary aspect of the economy.

    “We also went on to create the office of the Ombudsman, who, from time to time, will be advocating, arbitrating on issues of tax disputes.

    “We also have the Tax Tribunal, where, when you are supposed to pay tax and you are not paying your tax, we know where to take you so that it will act.

    “It’s not a court of record, but when the tribunal decides to act, and after acting you didn’t do the needful, then there will be cause to go to the Federal High Court and again, the tax tribunal, when in a set-up like Nigeria, a lot of people, when it comes to what is due to government, what is due as a tax, they take it with laxity. They don’t take their obligations,” Musa said.

    He said the Senate considered the proposal on Value Added Tax and ensured that every part of the county was given a sense of belonging.

    He said, “In the Nigerian Tax Administration Bill, we looked at the VAT and we also looked at the issue of the development levy, which has generated a lot of controversies. We also looked at the issue of so that at least to give every part of this country their fair share.

    “We looked at the distribution of the VAT, and we felt VAT is a product of consumption. And when you are talking about derivation, you define derivation to be based on consumption.

    “We now say the place of consumption should be what that derivation means. And that applies to the issue of VAT distribution, where the federal government is going to retain 10%, the state will take 55%, and local governments 35%. “

    He added, “Again today, we did another thing. We looked at the development levy, and we retained what they brought, but reduced it by 10% from 60% to 50%, and we took 10% from that to security, defence infrastructure, which is very important.

    “Every one of you knows how challenging it has been today on the matter of security, and we need adequate funding so that our men in the war fronts will continue to do the needful to return this country to a stable and peaceful nation.

    “What we also did was that we gave NASENI 10% and NITDA 10%. NELFUND, the student loan, we gave them 15%. We gave cybercrime 5%, and then defence infrastructure, we gave them 10%.

    “So I think these are the areas of contention and the issue of the OPTS, where they have been talking about the presidential order, the existing laws, they have not been in the PIA, all those areas have been adequately taken care of.

    “The export processing zone, where we are expecting that there will be a kind of backward integration and then at the same time, if you are given a license to operate an EPZ, what is expected of you is to produce there and export, so that you’ll be able to raise foreign reserves.

    “We need that foreign currency, but if you produce at a processing zone and decide to bring it in, you are creating a kind of competition that our local producers here would not be able to stand because you are not paying taxes while you are producing.

    “So we now say, if you are going to bring in anything above 25%, you must be subjected to almost equal to, in terms of tax, equal to what you are bringing in.

    “So I think also there, justice has been done. We have also looked at how we are going to coordinate the collection of these taxes.

    “You all agree with me that there have been so many leakages. MDAs will collect revenue and keep it. Some will not even declare it.

    “But now, with this Tax Reform Bill, we’ll be able to look at areas that will be able to use technology to get this revenue, at least reduce shortages to a minimum.

    “And what is that? The single window. So I believe Nigerians will see something nice.

    He said that President Tinubu deserves commendation for ensuring that the obsolete laws are amended and updated to meet current economic realities.

     He said, “We must commend Mr. President for the vision. Some of these laws have been there for a very long time. So, what he has been able to do now, no matter what you think, no matter the resistance, there is no better time to do what we have done than now.

    “I believe that Nigeria will prosper. I want to use this medium to commend the tenacity of the Senate President because he has been able to allow everyone to hear their voices. And we saw reason with some of them, and amendments were made where necessary.

    “I believe we are going for harmonisation and at the end of the day, at the end of the conference, we are going to give Nigeria a document that also in the next 50 years, Nigeria will be so proud of it.

    “I must tell you, I’m very proud of what we have done because we sacrificed. We did everything to the best of our ability, and I know that nobody can judge anyone, but God will judge us.

    “If we do the right thing, he will see it. If we did not do it, by the time this document is out, you will be able to make your judgments.”

    Rivers: Governance collapse led to emergency rule, FG tells S’Court

    The Federal Government has formally tabled before the Supreme Court its reasons for imposing a state of emergency on Rivers State, citing collapse of governance and attacks on critical national economic infrastructure as key factors. It says it had no choice but to intervene.

    The government laid its position bare before the apex court yesterday in response to a suit filed by 11 states mostly controlled by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

    The states are Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Delta, Enugu, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Taraba and Zamfara.

    The plaintiffs alleged that the Federal Government erred in law by imposing emergency rule on Rivers State.

    However, the federal government is disputing the plaintiffs’ claims.

    In an affidavit by the Special Assistant to the President and the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mr. Taiye Hussain Oloyede, the Federal Government alleged a very serious political crisis in Rivers State which culminated in the declaration of a state of emergency by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on March 15, 2025.

    It said critical economic assets of the state, including oil pipelines, became targets of vandalization while militants openly threatened fire and brimstone against those they perceived as enemies of the governor, with the governor not doing anything.

    Besides, the FG said the state’s crisis reached a point where the suspended Governor Similayi Fubara demolished the state House of Assembly complex.

    It said the breakdown of law in the state was such that only four members of the State Assembly were sitting in Fubara’s office.

    It said 27 other lawmakers were deprived the constitutional right to make laws for the state.

    It said the governor and the lawmakers were trying to outdo one another in a series of suits on the political logjam in the state.

    The Federal Government said the governor was not able to present any Appropriation Bill to the House to be passed to access funds to run the state. It is also confirmed classified security report that Fubara demolished the State House of Assembly Complex.

    Oloyede, in the affidavit, said: “I am a Special Assistant to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. By reason of that, I have been working in close contact with the Hon. Attorney-General of the Federation, the 1st defendant in this case.

    “Further by reason of the same position, I know the facts of this case and I have the authority of the President and Chief Akin Olujinmi, CON, SAN, counsel to the 1st defendant, to swear to this counter affidavit.

    “I have read through the affidavit in support of the plaintiffs originating summons. I admit paragraphs 1 and 8 of the affidavit in support of the originating summons.

    “I deny paragraphs 2, 3, 4, 5,6, 7,9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, #7, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, and 32 of the affidavit in support of the originating summons on the ground that they are not true.

    “By reason of my job as Special Assistant to President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, GCFR, I know the facts and circumstances that happened in Rivers State, which culminated in the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Ahmed Bola Tinubu on 18th March, 2025.

    “It is a matter of common knowledge that there was a very serious political crisis in Rivers State which had led to the Governor of Rivers State and the House of Assembly not being able to work together.

    “The State House of Assembly was crisis ridden such that members of the House were divided into two with four members working with the governor while 27 members were opposed to the governor while one was loyal to the Speaker of the House.

    “As a result, the governor was not able to present any Appropriation Bill to the House to be passed for the governor to be able to access funds for the running of the affairs of Rivers State.

    “Further to paragraph 10 above, by reason of the non-presentation of Appropriation Bill to the Rivers State House of Assembly for passage, governance had run to a standstill.”

    The Federal Government accused the suspended governor of escalating the crisis by demolishing the state House of Assembly.

    “The crisis escalated to the point that the governor demolished the House of Assembly of the State thus depriving the 27 members opposed to him from having official accommodation where they could meet to carry out their duties as a House of Assembly,” Oloyede said.

    “The governor however allowed the four members he considered loyal to him to be meeting in his office.”

    The Federal Government cited attacks on critical infrastructure and threats by militants in the oil-rich state as other factors behind the state of emergency.

    “There was violence in the state with attacks on critical economic assets of the State including vandalization of oil pipelines, with the Governor not taking any steps to address the occurrences.

     “Militants were openly threatening fire and brimstone against those they perceived as enemies of the governor with the governor not doing anything even as little as denouncing and disowning them.”

    According to the Federal Government, the political problem got to a stage that the governor and the lawmakers were trying to outdo one another in a series of suits on the political logjam in the state.

     Oloyede added: “There were several suits filed by the governor and the 27 members of the House opposed to the governor in several courts raising counteraccusations, with each side struggling to outdo the other in the political logjam in the state.

    “The suits eventually reached the Supreme Court on appeal and the Court gave a composite judgment in the appeals with the Court holding, amongst others, as follows: “A government cannot be said to exist without one of the three arms that make up the government of a state under the 1999 Constitution as amended.

    “In this case, the head of the executive arm of the government has chosen to collapse the legislature to enable him to govern without the legislature as a despot. As it is, there is no government in Rivers State.”

    The Federal Government said President Tinubu met with the all-warring parties but they stuck to their guns.

     Oloyede said: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu intervened in the dispute between the governor and the members of the State Assembly and other political players in the state with a view to resolving issues amicably for them, but the parties stuck to their individual positions to the detriment of peace and development in the state.

      “Again, many well-meaning and respected Nigerians also intervened in the crisis with a view to settling it but the Governor and members of the State Assembly gave no room for the crisis to be resolved.

    “Even after the delivery of the Supreme Court judgment referred to above, matters still remained the same in the State with no efforts made by the parties to resolve the crisis to allow governance to resume.

     “Therefore, to avoid further deterioration, President Ahmed Bola Tinubu had to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State to stop the drift to greater violence.

    “The foregoing facts were captured in the address made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the nation while declaring the state of emergency in Rivers State. A certified true copy of the proclamation of emergency is attached as Exhibit A.

    “Contrary to the depositions at paragraphs 6, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 27, 28, 29, 30 and 31 of the plaintiffs’ affidavit, the President has neither said nor threatened that he would declare a state of emergency in any of the plaintiffs’ states but the plaintiffs have only been driven into panic mode by their own imaginary fears.

    “Contrary to the depositions at paragraphs 18, 19, 20, 21, 22,23 and240f. 4/9 plaintiffs’ affidavit, I have read Section 305(6) of the 1999 Constitution as amended and I know that there is no stipulation therein that the resolution of two third majority prescribed therein shall be by physical counting of the votes by each house of the National Assembly.”

    The Federal Government insisted that President Tinubu acted within the constitution to declare the state of emergency in Rivers State.

     Oloyede said the 1st defendant, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) informed him in his office along Shagari Way in the Central Area, Abuja on 7th May, 2025 at 11 a.m., of the following facts which he verily believes to be true, viz:

     ● That it is the President of the country that has power under the Constitution to declare a state of emergency in the Federation or any part of it.

     ●That the role given to the National Assembly by the Constitution is to approve or disapprove of a state of emergency declared by the President, without more. 

     ●That it is the President on whom the constitution has imposed the duty to take the extraordinary measures required to restore peace and security in the area affected by the declaration of a state of emergency.

      ● That he, the 1st defendant, as such does not share the power to declare a state of emergency with the President and whatever be may have said to journalists does not amount to a dispute between the Federation and any of the plaintiff states.

      ●That the suit filed by the plaintiffs is hypothetical, academic, and speculative.

      ● That he, the 1st defendant agrees with the plaintiffs that each of the governors of the 10 plaintiffs states has a duty to ensure peace and security in their individual states.

      ● That President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a strong adherent of the rule of law who has committed himself to exercising his powers and carrying out his duties as President only in accordance with the law and the constitution and based on verifiable facts. 

     ● That there was actual breakdown of public order and public safety in Rivers State before the President declared a state of emergency in Rivers State.

     ● That the situation in Rivers required the President to take extraordinary measures to restore peace and security. 

     ● That even the Supreme Court, based on the facts contained in the appeals agitated to the Court in Rivers State House of Assembly v. The Government of Rivers State & Ors (2025) LPELR — 80539 cited by the plaintiffs at paragraph 13 of their affidavit, held emphatically, among other things, that there was no government in Rivers State.

    The National Assembly which was also sued on the same issue by the PDP governors has urged the Supreme Court to dismiss the suit.

    Responding via a preliminary objection dated 22 April, the national legislature said the suit is procedurally flawed and lacks merit.

     It argued that the court lacks the jurisdiction to entertain the suit and should award N1 billion in costs against the plaintiffs for filing what it termed a “frivolous and speculative suit.”

    The governors are praying the Supreme Court to determine the following: “Whether upon a proper construction and interpretation of the provisions of Sections 1(2), 5(2), 176, 180, 188 and 305 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria can lawfully suspend or in any manner whatsoever interfere with the offices of a Governor and the Deputy Governor of any of the component 36 States of the Federation of Nigeria and replace same with his own unelected nominee as a Sole Administrator, under the guise of, or pursuant to, a Proclamation of a State of Emergency in any of the State of the Federation, particularly in any of the Plaintiffs States?

    “Whether upon a proper construction and interpretation of the provisions of Sections 1(2), 4(6), 11(4) & (5), 90, 105 and 305 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria can lawfully suspend the House of Assembly of any of the component 36 States of the Federation of Nigeria, under the guise of, or pursuant to, a Proclamation of a State of Emergency in any of such States, particularly in any of the Plaintiffs States?

    “Whether the consequent threat by the first Defendant acting on behalf of the President to the States of the Federation, including the Plaintiffs’ States, to the effect that the offices of the Governor and Deputy Governor of the States can be suspended by the President by virtue of a Proclamation of a State of Emergency, is not in contravention of the provisions of Sections 1(2), 4(6), 5(2), 11(2) and (3) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 and inconsistent with the principles of constitutional federalism?”

    Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are scheduled to meet in Abuja today amidst the gale of defections that has hit the party.

    The governors’ rank decreased by one two weeks ago when Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori led his predecessor, Dy.Ifeanyi Okowa, and the entire PDP structure in the state to switch allegiance to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

    The governors met three weeks ago in Ibadan where they declared that the party would not join in the coalition talks being spearheaded by the PDP presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

    Oborevwori was absent at the Ibadan meeting.

    Today’s meeting, which is due to take place at the Bauchi State Governors’ Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja is also coming amidst fears and uncertainties ahead of the long-awaited meeting of the party’s highest decision-making body, the National Executive Committee (NEC) on May 27.

    Sources told The Nation yesterday that the PDP Governors’ meeting is expected to address the crisis in the party which has forced out the likes of Oborevwori, Okowa and others.

    All three Senators of the party from Kebbi State are also on their way to the APC and observers say more are likely to jump the PDP ship soon.

    Sources said legal intricacies surrounding the status of the PDP National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, who has been cast aside by the governors in favour of Architect Setonji Koshoedo, continue to simmer as the party prepares for the NEC meeting

    A highly-placed source said that if the NEC meeting is not postponed on the basis of legal matters, there is strong likelihood that the proposed national convention may not happen until well after August.

    The three major blocs currently working on strategies to push their agenda for the May 27 meeting are the PDP Governors, Atiku Abubakar bloc and loyalists of FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

    At the last meeting of the PDP NWC, which handles the party’s day-to-day administration, at Wadata Plaza in Abuja, the party’s Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Ilyas Damagum, announced their adoption of the entire resolutions made by the PDP Governors’ Forum at their April 14 meeting in Ibadan.

    PDP NWC’s decision to align with recommendations from the PDP Governors’ Forum sets the stage for a high-stake showdown among contending power blocs with resolve to push their interests.

    Although the PDP Governors’ Forum is not recognised under the party’s constitution, its recommendations that were formally adopted by the Damagum-led NWC include the rejection of the political merger or coalition that Atiku loyalists are strongly calling for, and a recommendation that the National Secretary position of Wike associate, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, should be occupied in acting capacity by the Deputy National Secretary, Architect Setonji Koshoedo.

    Also adopted were  recommendations for a Zoning Committee to be constituted under the trio of Governor Douye Diri (Chairman), Governor Dauda Lawal (Vice Chairman) and Governor Caleb Mutfwang (Secretary) to address all issues relating to the zoning of party offices while a National Convention Committee to be constituted under the trio of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri (Chairman), Governor Ademola Adeleke (Vice Chairman) and Governor Peter Mbah (Secretary) is to oversee PDP a national convention being scheduled for August 28 to 30 in Kano.

    Sources said  while Damagum is now working well with the PDP governors with some assurance of either retaining the present office or his old position as Deputy National Chairman (North), there are indications that ongoing arrangements may still end up in disappointment as several members of the PDP NWC are now facing great odds for re-appointment.

    For months, tensions have swirled over the fate of the Damagum-led NWC itself which split into two factions, doing counter-suspension of one another sometime last year before PDP governors called them to order.

    Some of the PDP governors, members of the Atiku bloc and other groups within the party had openly called for the removal of Damagum and the entire NWC to be dissolved—a move that only the NEC, under the PDP constitution is empowered to enact.

    For Atiku loyalists, PDP Governors’ position against a coalition as well as the choice of Governor Fintiri to head the national convention committee represents further danger signals.

    However, Atiku loyalists are mobilising party leaders across the North and South towards complementing any possibility of achieving a firm end to the dominant influence of FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike and his associate, Senator Anyanwu, by either supporting the constitution of a caretaker committee or having their loyalists in the ad-hoc leadership that would run the party’s affairs until a national convention takes place later in the year.

    The primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State yesterday produced four consensus candidates for the July local government chairmanship elections.

    They are Isa Abiola Jibril (Iba council), Azeez Karim (Oto Awori), Motunrayo Alogba (Ijede) and Rasaq Bamidele Kasali (Lekki).

    Their candidatures were affirmed by local government party officers, who formed the electoral college, in the presence of officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

    The shadow poll held at the APC secretariat on Acme Road, Ogba, Ikeja, was conducted by the Election Committee headed by former National Legal Adviser, Tunde Ogala, SAN.

    Other members of the committee are Governance Advisory Council (GAC) member Alhaji Mutiu Are, House of Representatives member and former state secretary Dr. Wale Ahmed, Rasaq Balogun,  Lanre Ogunyemi, Oyinlomo Danmola, Works Special Adviser Adekunle Olayinka, former state legal adviser Ademola Sodiq, Oris Hakeem Sulaiman and Housing Commissioner Akinderu Fatai.

    Although the exercise was meant to commence at 12 noon, it was slightly delayed to enable the delegates make up their minds on either consensus or voting by electoral college.

    Following the refusal of delegates from other councils to adopt consensus, they filed into the hall to cast their votes for aspirants of their choice.

    Delegates from the six Alimoso councils arrived after 3pm. Sources said they opted for voting after consensus failed.

    The indirect primary was orderly. After voting, the ballots were sorted, counted and results announced in the presence of agents of the aspirants.

    However, delegates from Yaba council were absent at the primary.

    The committee said arrangements would be made to conduct the primary for the council if the electoral college shuns consensus.

    At the close of the primary, Usman Hamzat, Chairman of Ifako Ijaye Council, got a ticket for second term.

    Also, Ojuwoye Council Chairman Seyi Jakande became the flag bearer.

    The chairman of Ojodu Council, David Odunmbaku, was elected candidate.

     Akinola Abiodun emerged as the flag bearer for the Orile-Agege Council while Taiwo Oyekan got the ticket for Lagos Island Local Government.

    Other notable candidates include Ogidan Azeez for Coker Aguda LCDA and Tola Oyedele for Agboyi-Ketu LCDA.

    Akinpelu Ibrahim got the ticket for Alimosho LGA while Jimoh Olawale got the banner in Apapa-Iganmu.

    Ogala had called for the cooperation of the delegates ahead of voting, saying that a peaceful exercise is in the interest of the party.

    Hamzat, who addressed the delegates before the commencement of the exercise, also urged them to support the election committee to succeed.

    He said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was watching them from Abuja, saying that they should not disappoint him and the party.

    He added: “This is the only party. The umbrella has torn.”

    JUST IN: Winners emerge in Lagos APC chairmanship primaries

    Winners have emerged in the All Progressives Congress (APC) Local Government chairmanship primaries for 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs). 

    The election held amidst tight security with heavy presence of police operatives at the party secretariat in ACME Ikeja. 

    Commissioner of Police, CP Moshood Jimoh was on ground to monitor the security situation within and around the venue. 

    Operatives of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and those of the Department of State Security (DSS) were also on ground to provide security.

    Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority were also on the ground to ensure free flow of movement.

    Vehicular movements on the entire stretch of the road leading to the venue were restricted.

    The development created gridlock around ACME Road and other roads, forcing vehicles to take alternative routes to access their destinations.

    No fewer than 1,500 party delegates from the different council areas were screened for accreditation, before exercising their franchise. 

    The APC leadership expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct of the primaries and has urged all party members to remain committed and united as the campaign for the main elections begins.

    Nigerian Pastor rearrested in South Africa weeks after acquittal

    Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso has been rearrested by South African authorities just weeks after acquittal of multiple rape and human trafficking charges.

    According to police and the Department of Home Affairs, the 66-year-old pastor of Jesus Dominion International was taken into custody on Saturday morning in East London.

    Omotoso was originally arrested in 2017 and charged with 32 counts, including rape, sexual exploitation, and human trafficking.

    Several young women, some reportedly still in school at the time, testified that he selected them for private prayer sessions that led to abuse. They said he would “pray for forgiveness” following each encounter.

    After spending nearly nine years in jail awaiting trial, Omotoso was acquitted last month of all charges.

    National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola confirmed the fresh arrest, stating, “Well, I know it’s Omotoso. He was arrested this morning around 5 o’clock in East London as he was finishing the church.”

    Masemola added the arrest was coordinated by immigration officials and special police units. “Inspectorate immigration of the Department of Home Affairs, together with the South African Police Service and TRT [Tactical Response Team], did effect the arrest.

    “The arrest is based on immigration matters. He will appear in court somewhere around Monday, and everybody will know exactly what charges he’s facing. But it’s immigration-related matters,” he said.

    Three more senators are on their way to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in a fresh hit at the support base of the opposition party across the country.

    Set to switch camps on the floor of the Red Chambers on Tuesday are Alhaji Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar Abdullahi (Kebbi North) and Alhaji Garba Maidoki (Kebbi South).

    The wave of defections has also taken the Minority Leader of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, Yahaya Zakari, and hundreds of PDP supporters in the state to the APC.

    National Chairman of the ruling party, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, said yesterday that the wave of defections would be managed seamlessly through established party mechanisms.

    The three Kebbi Senators met with President Bola Tinubu yesterday in Abuja to formally declare their intention to join the APC.

    They were accompanied to the meeting by Ganduje, Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris, Sokoto State Governor Ahmad Aliyu, Budget and Economic Planning Minister Atiku Bagudu,and Senator Aliyu Wamakko, among others.

    Defectors will be smoothly integrated, says Ganduje

    Speaking to State House correspondents after the meeting, Dr. Ganduje said there was no cause for alarm about integrating the defectors into the party as APC’s constitution and its internal structures provide clear guidance for such.

    “Our constitution is very clear about this. And beyond that, our political dexterity in managing such affairs is on the table. So, I assure you that there will be a smooth integration,” he said.

    Ganduje described the coming of the three senators as both strategic and beneficial to the party, noting that the defections were the result of weeks of underground negotiations and consultations among key stakeholders in Kebbi State.

    “This is in continuation of the initiative of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that the APC must do what it must do democratically in order to increase our numerical strength.

    “In this incident, not only our numerical strength, but also the quality and capacity of our followership have increased,” Ganduje said.

    He said the President had given his blessing to the senators’ decision.

    “By Tuesday, you will see what will happen in the Red Chambers,” he said in a veiled reference to the defection on the floor of the Senate.

    Responding to a question on whether the mass defections to the ruling party were not part of a plan to impose a one party system on the country, Ganduje said it was not, but rather a reflection of APC’s appeal across the country.

    His words: “Leaders who worry about a one-party state have no need to fear. A one-party state is not by force; it is by negotiation.

    “It is by other political parties seeing the effect of the positive governance of our party. If they decide to come to our party willingly, I think there is nothing wrong with that.”

    Continuing, he said: “Today, China is one of the strongest countries in the world, and it’s a one-party system.

    “We are not saying we are working for a one-party system, but if this is the wish of Nigerians, we cannot quarrel with that.”

    He also said the high number of political parties in the country is not good for governance.

    “You know they say too many cooks spoil the soup. Too many political parties spoil governance,” Ganduje remarked.

    Jigawa minority leader, others dump PDP for APC

    Minority Leader of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, Yahaya Zakari, was formally received into the APC by Governor Umar Namadi at Government House, Dutse.

    The governor promised Zakari and other defectors that they would be fully integrated into the party and given equal treatment.

    Defectors also joined from Gwaram and Guri local government areas of the state.

    Zakari said he was motivated by what he described as Governor Namadi’s inclusive leadership and the fair distribution of government projects across the state.

    The Speaker of the State Assembly, Haruna Aliyu, who led the delegation, said there was no crisis in the Assembly.

    He described the legislature as one of the most peaceful in the country and attributed the APC’s growing support to its performance in office.

    Earlier this week, six Delta State House of Representatives PDP members formalised their exit on the floor of the Green Chamber while all members of the State House of Assembly also joined the APC to complete the recent movement of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his deputy, Monday Onyeme, House of Assembly Speaker Emomotimi Guwor, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and the entire PDP structure to the APC.

    Senator Kawu Sumaila (Kano South) similarly crossed to the APC, citing misunderstanding and mistrust in his fromer party, New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

    “There is a misunderstanding, misperception on the way things are going. Definitely, there are some misunderstandings, mistrust among our ranks, and later on, we decided to join forces with the APC to realise the interest of our people,” he said.

    Edo State House of Assembly Speaker Blessing Agbebaku, two other state lawmakers, 18 local government chairmen, 192 councillors and other party chieftains also dumped PDP for the APC.

    They were received into the ruling party by the National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, who represented National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje; Governor Monday Okpebholo, his deputy Denis Idahosa, and Senator Adams Oshiomhole.

    Ex-Gov Ikpeazu’s spokesman dumps PDP

    The Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the immediate past governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, Onyebuchi Ememanka has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

    Ememanka’s resignation from the PDP came days after praising governor Alex Otti for the good job one of Nigeria’s leading construction giants did on the Port Harcourt Road, which crisscrosses Aba South Local Government Area to connect road users to the popular Enugu-Umuahia-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway.

    While Ememanka said he would soon make his new party known to the public, he disclosed that he has been impressed with the activities of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, who is rumoured to be interested in running for the governorship seat of the state on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

    A few minutes after submitting his resignation letter to the chairman of PDP leadership in his ward, Ememanka, in a post on his official Facebook page titled “GOODBYE, PDP!”, also said the decision to leave the PDP was painful.

    The former CPS who was purportedly denied House of Representatives ticket by his party in 2019 said he would continue to pursue his political aspirations.

    Gunmen unleashed fresh terror in Imo State on Thursday, killing several passengers.

    Although the police confirmed the Abor Umulolo in Okigwe Local Government Area attack, they gave no figure on the casualties.

    Amnesty International quoted 30, sparking apprehension across the state.

    The police blamed the attack on the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), saying one of the gunmen was killed in a shootout with security agents.

    A manhunt has been launched for the rest of the gunmen, according to the police.

    The police said the gunmen suspected to be members of IPOB/ESN launched the attack on commuters in Onuimo and parts of Okigwe in the early hours Thursday, killing several people and burning vehicles.

    Security agents who were deployed in response to the attacks came under fire from the gunmen.

    The police said the hoodlums were overwhelmed by the superior fire power of the security agents.

    One of the assailants was consequently gunned down in the encounter while others fled with varying degrees of bullet wounds.

    The police said the gunmen, operating in three groups, barricaded the highway at about 0400 and shot sporadically before setting vehicles ablaze.

    “A full-scale search and cordon operation is currently underway, with security operatives combing nearby forests and surrounding areas where the suspects are believed to be hiding,” the police said.

    A snatched Toyota Corolla with registration number ENU 283 CN and an HP laptop were recovered from the scene.

    Police spokesman in the state, Henry Okoye said the body of the neutralised suspect was deposited at the morgue, while the recovered items are in police custody for further investigation.

    He said an intensive manhunt has been launched to apprehend the fleeing suspects and bring them to justice.

    The Command urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station.

    30 travellers killed, Amnesty says

    Amnesty International claimed on X that 30 travellers were killed and 20 vehicles and trucks were set ablaze in the attack.

    Amnesty asked government to investigate the attack and bring the perpetrators to justice.

    No extradition process against Simon Ekpa – AGF

    The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, said yesterday that reports suggesting that  the Federal Government had commenced extradition proceedings against factional leader of IPOB, Simon Ekpa, were not true.

    Fagbemi’s Special Assistant on Communication and Publicity, Kamarudeen Ogundele, described the media reports as a misrepresentation of comments made by the minister at a stakeholders’ engagement n Thursday in Abuja.

     “The report is untrue and a complete departure from what the AGF said at the Stakeholders/Citizen Engagement Forum held on Thursday in Abuja,” Ogundele said.

    Ogundele said his principal only remarked that the federal government was in talks with Finnish authorities to ensure that Ekpa, who is currently facing trial in Finland, is held accountable for his actions.

    The Technical Sub-Committee on the Crude and Refined Product Sales in Naira is proceeding  with the implementation of the federal government’s initiative to conduct crude oil and refined product transactions in Naira, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun said yesterday.

    The initiative is part of President Bola Tinubu’s broader economic strategy to stabilise the Naira, improve energy security, and deepen local value addition within Nigeria’s petroleum sector.

    Edun, speaking during a meeting of the committee in Abuja, expressed satisfaction with the level of inter-agency collaboration and the involvement of relevant stakeholders.

    The minister is the panel chairman.

    The meeting, according to a statement by the Finance Ministry, reviewed the implementation milestones of the policy and noted progress made since its last engagement.

    In attendance were key players in the oil and gas industry including  the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and Chairman of the Technical Sub-Committee, Mr. Zacch Adedeji; Special Adviser to the President on Energy, Ms. Olu Verheijen and  senior officials of  the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

    Also present were representatives of local refining companies and regulatory agencies such as the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).

    The Naira-for-Crude initiative is expected to reduce Nigeria’s dependency on foreign exchange for domestic energy transactions, while also encouraging investments in local refining capacity.

    It aligns with broader economic reform efforts focused on reducing inflationary pressures, boosting domestic production and improving the country’s trade balance.

    Yesterday’s meeting was a continuation of the government’s phased approach to policy implementation, with attention now turning to refining supply chain arrangements, pricing frameworks and regulatory alignment to ensure the sustainability of the programme.

    NNPC, Dangote strengthen strategic partnership

    Two critical players in the nation’s oil industry NNPCL and Dangote Refinery have pledged to deepen collaboration aimed at ensuring Nigeria’s energy security and advancing shared prosperity for the citizens.

    The commitment was made during a courtesy visit by the President/Chief Executive of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote to the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., Mr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, at the NNPC Towers on Thursday.

    Dangote pledged to collaborate with the new NNPC Management to ensure energy security for Nigeria.

    “There is no competition between us. We are not here to compete with NNPC Ltd,” he said.

    He added: “NNPC is part and parcel of our business and we are also part of NNPC. This is an era of co-operation between the two organisations.”

    He congratulated the GCEO and the Senior Management Team on their “well-deserved appointments.”

    He expressed confidence in the ability of the new NNPC management team to shoulder the enormous task ahead of them.
