    • Death of boxing icon’s associates in fatal crash throws Sagamu into mourning

The boxing world, still in shock over Monday’s fatal road crash, in which boxing icon Anthony Joshua’s two associates died, yesterday sympathized with the former world heavy-weight champion.

In tweets and statements, boxing legends – Oleksandr Usyk  and Tyson Fury – commiserated with Joshua over the death of his friends and wished him speedy recovery.

Joshua and three others were travelling from Lagos to Sagamu in neighbuoring Ogun State when the Lexus Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) they were travelling in rammed into a stationary vehicle.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) gave the cause of accident as over speeding and overtaking on the wrong side.

Fury, who is lined up as a possible next opponent for Joshua, took to social media to send a message on Joshua’s associates who died. He said, “This is so sad. May god give them a good bed in heaven.”

Usyk  said in a social media post: “This is an unbelievable loss.”

“They were two incredible people who were not only part of AJ’s team, but also friends! My sincere condolences to their families, loved ones, and everyone who knew them. Anthony – wishing you a speedy recovery. Stay strong, champion.”

Leading boxing promoter and chairman of Matchroom Sports, Hearn, paid tribute on social media, writing: “With the heaviest of hearts. Two great men. Rest in eternal peace, Sina and Latif. My thoughts and deepest prayers are with everyone.”

The Nigeria Boxing Federation  expressed profound condolences to  Joshua and the families of the two associates of the boxer who died.

“On behalf of the entire Nigerian Boxing family, I express my deepest condolences to our national treasure, Anthony Joshua and the families of the two individuals who passed away,” President of the NBF Mr. Wale Edun said.

Edun is also Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy.

“The loss of life is always deeply distressing, and our thoughts and prayers are with you, Anthony and the affected families at this difficult time.

“As a boxing community, we pray for your speedy recovery and that the souls of the dearly departed rest in peace,” he added.

Also yesterday, dignitaries from all works of life were in the hospital to symathise with Joshua and wish him speedy recovery.

Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), British Deputy Head of Mission  Simon Field,  Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, and  National Sports Commission Director General   Bukola Olopade were at the hospital at various times yesterday.

Ogun State governor’s spokesman Kayode AKinmade quoted the governor as reaffirming doctors’ remark that Joshua is stable, after his visit.

Olopade  conveyed profound sympathy to Joshua and the families of the victims of the accident,

“On behalf of the National Sports Commission and the entire Nigerian sports family, I express my heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in this unfortunate accident,” Olopade said.

Also, Works Minister Dave Umahi and the  Senator, representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, commiserated with the former heavyweight boxing champion.

“My heart goes out to Anthony Joshua at this very painful time,” Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan said. “Losing two close friends in such a tragic manner is devastating. I pray that God grants him strength and comfort, and that the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace.”

Umahi revealed that a special task force would be formed in February to check the illegal parking of trucks on highways.

Sagamu, the Ogun State community, Joshua’s home town, was thrown into a mournful mood as a result of the accident.

Family members of the boxer expressed deep shock over the death of Joshua’s associates.

Some of the family members who spoke to reporters yesterday expressed worry that they have been unable to see their son, although they expressed joy he did not sustain  major injuries going by fillers from the hospital and media reports.

Joshua’s uncle,  Adedamola Joshua, who spoke to reporters on behalf of the family said: “Since the incident happened, we have been rallying round to see if it is possible to get to see our son, but that has been impossible because of his status. We don’t know the hospital he was taken to, and we can understand that such is being done to protect him as a world figure.

“However, we have been in touch with his father and mother, who are also in Nigeria, and they have assured us that Joshua is fine

“We are also thinking that it will be fine if they allow even if it’s just three of the family members to see him, we are all eager to see him, but we will still respect the wish of the authority to keep him out of reach for now.

“We are really sad that two people who were very close to Anthony died in this accident. Our hearts are with the families and associates of these young men. We pray that the Lord God Almighty will comfort everyone who is affected by this unfortunate incident.

“Sincerely, the news that our son, Anthony, was involved in a fatal crash came to us as a rude shock. We did not get to hear of this terrible news on time.

“Anthony comes on visits to Nigeria frequently. We felt so bad because this is the end of the year period, which we use as a family to create bond. It is really quite unfortunate.

“The sad news jolted the Sagamu community, and up till now, everyone is still in shock. People have kept calling the family members to sympathise with us and get updates.’’

Following the Monday accident, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu established contact with Joshua and his mum through the telephone. In a tweet on the incident, the President wished the boxer, who he described as an icon, speedy recovery.

Although Fubara has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, it has not halted the animosity and mutual suspicion between him and the minister.

In his speech during and after the defection , the governor avoided making references to Wike in all the public events.

Also, the minister, who is on tour of the councils, has not visited the governor or attended any of the state functions.

Reacting to the defection, Wike fired salvos at Fubara, disputing his claim to the leadership of the state chapter of the APC.

He also said the fact that he had joined party supporters in singing ‘On your plaform we stand,’ the famed caucus anthem of Tinubu supporters, does not make him  a core loyalist of the president.

Addressing a crowd of enthusiastic supporters, Wike said leaders are elected to represent the will of the people and not for personal agenda.

Urging the people of Rivers to support President Tinubu in 2027, he  however, insisted the strategies for leadershio recruitment in the state woukd be reviewed.

He said: “Since our support to President Tinubu, things have become better for the people of Khana. You have supported everything good for the people of Khana and we are very grateful for this.”

‘Fubara needs Wike to secure second term’

Giadom, who spoke in Gbokana, advised Fubara to settle his rift with Wije in the interest if his second term.

He said the governor will need the minister during the governorship nominations.

Describing Wike as a “dependable leader” in Rivers politics, Giadom assured the minister that there would be no political force in Gokana other than Wike.

He said: “I guarantee, on behalf of my brothers, that the Gokana people are for Wike and Tinubu and nobody will challenge Wike’s influence in Gokana.

“Gokana is a ‘no go area’ for anybody. Even Governor Fubara, for him to win anything in Gokana, he must pass through Wike.”

Senator Magnus Abe, who represented Rivers South East in the Senate, said the people of Gokana have already chosen Wike and President Tinubu as their friends.

He said: “Wike is a leader that unites and that is why we are united. If you follow Wike, you will not go home empty handed.

“The Ogoni people are with you and we will not go home empty handed. Please, tell Tinubu not to bother coming to Gokana to campaign. We are for him.”

The Deputy Speaker of Rivers House of Assembly, Dumle Maol, assured Wike that the people of Gokana are with him.

He said: “Anywhere you go we will go.”

The Chairman of Gokana Council, Confidence Deko, pledged total support to the minister, saying “wherever you go, we will go”.

He added: “This local government is for you because of what you have done for us. Please, tell Tinubu that the people of Bokana are appreciative of him.

He commended the people for the display of unity of purpose for President Tinubu,  saying, “When you are united, good things will come”.

He urged the people to be patient and listen to their leaders for direction on where to go when the time comes.

The minister noted that APC and PDP in Rivers are working under the umbrella of  President Tinubu ‘s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Wike said: “That is why you see PDP and APC members here”.

Rivers still at crossroads, says Fubara

Fubara called for unity in Rivers, saying thst the state is at crossroads.

The governor said everyone must stick together amid efforts to divide them.

Fubara said: “For me today is very important because at the crossroad of our state, what is most important is unity that will attract progress. Attending this event and seeing your theme: ‘Unifying our strength for progress,’ truly reflects that Eneka people are part of my government because they understand the importance of unity. That you can only progress when there is unity.

“I urge everyone to continue to be together. When you are together, you cannot be broken. There will be some attempts to disorganise you and dismember you, but ensure that you stand as one.”

He added: “Standing as one is when the government can listen to you because your voice will be very strong. Standing as one is when the government can see that coming here to support you will not cause any pain, and standing as one will further make government to listen to you whenever you call”.

The governor said he decided to honour the invitation to reciprocate the love and loyalty shown him by Senator John Mbata, who hails from the area.

Fubara said he would accept the chieftaincy title conferred on him by the Eneka people because of their loyalty.

He said: “What is important is that I am here with you and I have to say thank you for allowing your son, Senator John Azuta Mbata, to support me. I want you to understand that in supporting me, a lot has happened to him.

“But like he said here, when an Eneka man is with you, he follows you to the end. I want to believe that you all followed me because he was following me. For that reason, I accept, first, the chieftancy title conferred on me whole heartedly”.

The governor promised to grant the requests made by the Eneka people to upgrade their traditional stool and construct their internal roads.

He congratulated the people for celebrating the Eneka Day, which he observed was last observed seven years ago.

“Your Excellency, Emohua owes you everything and we are not going to wait for you to tell us what to do when the time comes.

“We have decided that wherever you put your leg, Emohua local government will follow you.”

Awuse also said President Tinubu has done well and deserves the support of Rivers people.

He said President Tinubu has improved the nation’s economy, stabilised the Naira and increased foreign reserves.

He added: “Before I became a traditional ruler I was an accountant first ñ, and then, I became a politician. From my accounting and finance understanding, Tinubu has done very well.

“The indices are so clear. The value of the Naira has gone up. He has done well. The external reserve of the nation has also increased to more than 47 billion dollars”.

The monarch added that through President Tinubu, Wike has transformed Abuja.

He advised the minister not to be distracted by the gimmicks of the enemy, saying; “In life, if you expect not to have enemies then you’re a master of nobody. Only a man who is doing well is spoken about”.

Awiñusw commended the minister for the annual visit at the end of every year to acknowledge the support of the people.

He also thanked Wike for always coming to the rescue of people in the local government.

“If I don’t thank you publicly, where will I say it,” he asked.

New tax laws take off January 1, 2026, Tinubu insists

…says reforms not designed to raise taxes

…dismisses controversy over alleged alterations, pledges due process

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday reaffirmed that Nigeria’s new tax laws will commence on January 1, 2026, as scheduled, describing the reforms as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a fair, competitive, and robust fiscal foundation for the country.

In a statement personally signed by the President, he said the sweeping tax reforms were aimed not at raising taxes but at resetting Nigeria’s fiscal architecture, harmonising the tax system, and strengthening the social contract between the state and citizens.

“The new tax laws, including those that took effect on June 26, 2025, and the remaining acts scheduled to commence on January 1, 2026, will continue as planned,” Tinubu said, stressing that the reforms are designed to support long-term competitiveness while protecting dignity and shared responsibility.

The President urged all stakeholders, state governments, businesses, labour unions, and professional bodies, to rally behind the implementation phase, noting that the reform process has moved decisively from legislation to delivery.

“The tax laws are not designed to raise taxes, but rather to support a structural reset, drive harmonisation, and protect dignity while strengthening the social contract. I urge all stakeholders to support the implementation phase, which is now firmly in the delivery stage,” he said.

Tinubu’s clarification follows weeks of public debate and political agitation over claims that some provisions of the newly enacted tax laws were allegedly altered after passage by the National Assembly.

Critics, including some civil society groups and professional associations, had raised concerns that sections dealing with harmonisation and revenue administration were either amended or inconsistently reflected between versions passed by lawmakers and copies circulated after presidential assent.

The claims prompted calls in some quarters for a suspension or review of the laws ahead of their full commencement in 2026.

However, the President dismissed suggestions that the reform process should be halted, insisting that no material issue had been established to justify disrupting a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s tax system.

“Our administration is aware of the public discourse surrounding alleged changes to some provisions of the recently enacted tax laws. No substantial issue has been established that warrants a disruption of the reform process,” Tinubu said.

He cautioned against what he described as premature, reactive measures, noting that public confidence in governance is built through consistent adherence to sound decisions over time.

“Absolute trust is built over time through making the right decisions, not through premature, reactive measures,” the President added.

Reassuring Nigerians, Tinubu emphasised his administration’s commitment to due process and the integrity of laws duly enacted by the legislature.

He pledged continued engagement with the National Assembly to address any genuine concerns that may arise during implementation.

“I emphasise our administration’s unwavering commitment to due process and the integrity of enacted laws. We will work with the National Assembly to ensure the swift resolution of any issue identified,” he said.

The President further assured that the Federal Government would continue to act in the overriding public interest to deliver a tax system capable of supporting prosperity, fairness, and shared national responsibility.

“I assure all Nigerians that the Federal Government will continue to act in the overriding public interest to ensure a tax system that supports prosperity and shared responsibility,” Tinubu said.

The new tax framework, a central pillar of Tinubu’s economic reform agenda, is expected to reshape revenue administration, reduce duplication across tiers of government, and provide a more predictable environment for investment as Nigeria pursues sustainable growth beyond oil revenues.

FG denies allegations of targeting opposition in anti-corruption drive

The federal government has dismissed claims that it is targeting opposition figures in its anti-graft efforts.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, clarified that the government has no plans to unlawfully arrest, detain, or prosecute opposition leaders.

The statement came in response to a fabricated document alleging the creation of a non-existent multi-agency task force called “ADP4VIP” (Arrest, Detain, Prosecute for Very Important Persons).

Idris explained that the document falsely claims a task force involving the EFCC, ICPC, and NFIU, coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser, intends to aggressively target prominent opposition members, particularly within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He noted that the report misleadingly cites “multiple credible sources” to suggest a planned “systematic weakening and neutralisation of opposition political activity.”

“There is no such programme as ‘ADP4VIP,’” the Minister emphasized. He added that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration remains focused on implementing economic reforms, tackling insecurity, expanding trade, and restoring investor confidence.

Idris described the attempt to label lawful accountability as political targeting as a dangerous diversion meant to shield so-called Very Important Personalities (VIPs) from the law.

“The attempt by some opposition elements to frame lawful accountability as political targeting is a dangerous red herring designed to shield so-called VIPs from answering to our national laws and anti-corruption agencies,” he said.

He assured that the government will not be distracted by perpetual politicking, stressing that Nigerians deserve continuity, progress, and tangible results, which the Tinubu administration is committed to delivering.

The minister stated, “The Government underscores its foundational principles. Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) guarantees every Nigerian the right to freely associate and assemble. President Tinubu swore an oath to uphold this Constitution and its protections, including the freedoms of association and religion. He is a democrat with considerable and positive footprints.

“Under President Tinubu’s leadership, the Federal Government remains unwavering in its commitment to the rule of law, due process, and the independence of institutions. Nigeria is a constitutional democracy where law enforcement and judicial agencies are obligated to perform their duties professionally, without interference, and in the nation’s best interest.

“Politicians and citizens are therefore enjoined to desist from engaging in disinformation, misinformation, and fake news, especially in an era where credibility is intrinsically linked to informational fidelity.

“With the 2027 general elections on the horizon, the public should anticipate an increase in fabricated narratives and political blackmail by actors who employ falsehood as a strategy for relevance. We urge all Nigerians to remain vigilant and to reject the politics of distortion and division.

“Every Nigerian retains the constitutional right to lawful association and political activity. Concurrently, our security and anti-corruption institutions retain the lawful mandate to operate in the nation’s interest.

“As we draw the curtain on 2025 and step into a new year, this government will not be distracted by those invested in perpetual politicking. Nigerians deserve continuity, progress, and tangible results—and that is what the Tinubu Administration remains dedicated to delivering.”

UPDATED: Alleged N8.7b fraud: Court remands ex-AGF Malami, son, one other in Kuje prison till January 2

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered that the immediate past Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami (SAN), and two others be remanded in Kuje prison until January 2, 2026.

The other two are Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami (Malami’s son) and Hajia Bashir Asabe, said to be an employee of Rahamaniyya Properties Limited, a firm allegedly linked to the former minister.

Justice Emeka Nwite, who handed out the order in a ruling on Tuesday, said the three should remain in prison until January 2 next year, when their bail application would be heard and determined.

Justice Nwite, in the ruling on an oral bail application made by defence lawyer, Joseph Daudu (SAN), said it would serve the interest of justice and fair hearing to allow the prosecution respond to the formal bail application earlier filed by the defendants

The judge said, “I have listened to the submissions of the learned counsel for both sides and also gone through the relevant laws. It is not in dispute that a bail application has been filed by the defendants.

“It is also not in dispute that the bail application has been served on the prosecution. It is not in dispute that the application cannot be withdrawn by the defendants,” he said.

The judge said that although the court could exercise its power by granting bail, the exercise of such power would be possible after the prosecution has responded to the bail application filed by the defence.

Justice Nwite said it would amount to an ambush for the court to grant the bail application while the prosecution was yet to file a response to the defence’s bail application.

He added, “This will breach the right to a fair hearing against the prosecution. I am of the view that the interest of justice will be met by allowing the prosecution to respond to the bail application filed.”

Earlier in the proceedings, the three defendants were arraigned on a 16-count money laundering charge brought against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The EFCC is among others, claiming that Malami and his two co-defendants conspired to disguise the origin of funds, acquire properties indirectly, and retain sums they allegedly knew were proceeds of unlawful activity, in violation of the Money Laundering (Prohibition and Prevention) Acts of 2011 (as amended) and 2022.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge, following which prosecuting lawyer, Ekele Iheanacho (SAN), applied for a date for the commencement of trial.

Daudu then told the court about his intention to apply for bail for the defendants.

Responding, Iheanacho said he had yet to respond to the formal bail application filed by the defendants and applied for an adjournment to enable him respond to the bail application.

Iheanacho said, “In view of the non-guilty plea of the defendants, may we apply for a trial date for the defendants.

“I know we received an application for bail, and we will be seeking your lordship’s indulgence for a date to respond.

“We got the application yesterday around 3 pm. We will be asking for a date to respond.”

Daudu then said even though a formal bail application had been filed by the defendant, he could equally make an oral application, citing a 1995 case involving Abiola Vs. Federal Republic of Nigeria.

After listening to the lawyers of both sides, Justice Nwite suspended proceedings briefly but returned later to deliver the ruling.

In the charge, marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/700/2025, the EFCC alleged, in count one, that between July 2022 and June 2025, Malami and his son directed Metropolitan Auto Tech Limited to conceal over N1 billion (N1,014,848,500) in a Sterling Bank account, knowing the funds were proceeds of unlawful activity.

Count two states that between September 2020 and February 2021, the duo allegedly concealed more than N600 million (N600,013,460.40) through the same company.

In count three, the commission alleged that in March 2021, Malami and his son retained N600 million as cash collateral for a N500 million Sterling Bank loan to Rayhaan Hotels Ltd, despite knowing the funds were illicit.

Count four alleges that in November 2022, Malami, his son, and Mrs. Asabe disguised N500 million used to purchase a luxury duplex in Maitama, Abuja.

In count five, the EFCC claimed that between November 2022 and September 2024, the trio conspired to conceal N1,049,173,926.13 paid through Meethaq Hotels Ltd’s Union Bank account.

Count six states that between November 2022 and October 2025, Malami and his son allegedly took control of N1,362,887,872.96 from the same account, knowing it was illicit.

Count seven alleges that in November–December 2018, Malami and Mrs. Asabe concealed N700 million used to purchase No. 3 Onitsha Crescent, Garki, Abuja (Hamonia Hotels Ltd).

In count eight, between September and December 2020, the duo and Mrs. Asabe allegedly concealed N850 million to buy a property in Jabi District, Abuja (Meethaq Hotels Ltd).

Count nine states that in February 2018, Malami and Hajia Bashir acquired No. 3 Rhine Street, Maitama, Abuja, for N430 million, allegedly from unlawful sources.

In count 10, the pair allegedly concealed N210 million in February 2018 to purchase a property in Asokoro District, Abuja.

Count 11 alleges that between March and June 2021, they concealed N325 million used to acquire No. 1241B Asokoro District, Abuja.

In count 12, the EFCC stated that between November 2015 and January 2016, the duo concealed N120 million used to purchase No. 27 Efab Estate, Gwarimpa, Abuja.

Count 13 alleges that in November 2022, Malami, his son, and Mrs Asabe conspired to hide funds used to acquire a luxury duplex at Amazon Street, Maitama, Abuja.

BREAKING: Court orders remand of ex-AGF Malami, son, wife in Kuje prison

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday ordered the remand of a former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing and determination of his bail application.

Justice Emeka Nwite also ordered the remand of Malami’s co-defendants—his son, Abubakar Malami, and one of his wives, Bashir Asabe—at the same facility.

The order followed arguments from the defence team led by Joseph Daudu (SAN) and the prosecution counsel, Ekele Iheneacho (SAN).

Malami and his co-defendants are facing a 16-count money laundering charge filed against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In the charge, the EFCC alleged that the defendants conspired at various times to conceal, retain and disguise proceeds of unlawful activities amounting to several billions of naira.

The commission further alleged that the offences, which span several years, involved the use of companies and bank accounts to launder funds, the retention of cash as collateral for loans, and the acquisition of high-value properties in Abuja, Kano and other locations.

The EFCC also claimed that some of the alleged offences were committed while Malami was serving as Attorney-General of the Federation, contrary to the provisions of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011 (as amended) and the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022.
