  • Makinde, Fayose in row over N50b Fed Govt’s cash support for Ibadan blast victims

Makinde, Fayose in row over N50b Fed Govt’s cash support for Ibadan blast victims

The brickbats yesterday between Governor Seyi Makinde and former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has raised dusts over the Federal Government financial support for the Oyo State Government in connection with the 2024 explosion in Ibadan.

In Fayose’s response to Makinde’s attack on Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, during his media chart on Wednesday, the ex-governor accused Makinde of not mentioning the N50 billion support given to the state by the Federal Government to mitigate the effect of the explosion which affected many houses in Ibadan GRA.

But Makinde yesterday debunked the N50 billion, saying his government got N30 billion.

Fayose, in a statement he personally signed, alleged that Makinde might have diverted the money for his presidential campaign. But he provided no evidence to support his claim.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS) Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Makinde rebutted the N50 billion, saying he got only N30 billion and proceeded to explain how it was disbursed.

Makinde and Wike were members of the Group of Five Governors (G-Five) and Allies who  supported President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2023 against their party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate,  Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

But, they now belong to different camps in the main opposition party and hold contrasting views on its protracted leadership crisis.

While Fayose belongs to the Wike/Anyanwu faction, which is rooting for the second term ambition of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Oyo governor is the arrowhead of the Saminu Turaki faction.

Speculations are rife that Makinde is eyeing the PDP presidential ticket.

Fayose said: “Two days ago, I said on a national television that Oyo State under Governor Seyi Makinde got a sum of N50bn from the Federal Government as intervention on the January 2024 explosion in Ibadan.

“Yesterday,  the governor responded by asking me to provide evidence that he received such money, and here is the evidence he asked for.

“Meanwhile, only N4.5bn was released to victims of the Ibadan explosion. Rather, he diverted this fund and many others to his presidential ambition, which is the reason for the crisis in the PDP and his attacks on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his government.

“Even though it is not in my character to go public with official government documents, I had to do this so that Nigerians will know who is saying the truth, and who has not been sincere with the people of Oyo State.

Most importantly,  if as a governor,  you have elected to go on national television to disclose part of what transpired in private meetings you had with the President,  it becomes the duty of well-meaning Nigerians to give full disclosure.

“Lastly, I challenge Governor Seyi Makinde to sue me on this. Let me also tell him that there are proofs of other intervention funds received from Tinubu’s administration by the Oyo State Government, which the governor refused to disclose to the people.

“Also, there are documentary evidences on the actual Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of Oyo State, as against Governor Makinde’s claim. But we will keep our gunpowder dry for now.”

     Makinde got only N30b,says aide

Olanrewaju denied the allegation by Fayose that his principal got N50billion, saying that it is misleading and deliberately disingenuous.

He also denied insinuations that the governor has been silent about the fund and saving it with an intention to spend it on his political ambition.

Olanrewaju said since Makinde did not know the amount received from the Federal Government, Fayose could not provide evidence on the disbursement when asked to do so.

However, the media aide clarified that N30billion was released out of the requested sum, adding that the balance of N20billion was trapped due to request for inducement.

He did not name those officials who requested for inducement.

Olanrewaju said: “Recent comments attributed to former Governor Ayodele Fayose, alleging that the Federal Government handed N50billion to Seyi Makinde and that the governor chose to stay silent while saving up the money to support his presidential ambition are not only misleading, they are deliberately disingenuous.

“Let us be clear from the outset. The Federal Government did not give Governor Makinde N50billion. This is why Fayose was unable to provide evidence to show the disbursement when asked to do so. In fact, the memo he shared shows what was not disbursed.

What exists on record is a request and a promise, not a disbursement of N50billion.

“In the immediate aftermath of the tragic January 2024 Bodija explosion, which claimed lives, destroyed homes, and traumatised an entire community, President Bola Tinubu did not visit Oyo State.

“Governor Makinde travelled to Abuja personally, armed with a comprehensive report of the incident and a formal request for support from the Federal Government. Following that engagement, the Federal Government promised a N50billion support package.

“A promise, however, is not a release. When it was time to act, only N30billion was released.

“Was the Governor expected to convene a press conference to announce that the Federal Government had promised N50 billion, released N30 billion, and was withholding N20 billion? Or to publicly litigate negotiations around a national tragedy?

“What matters is what was done with the fund that was released.

“To be clear, Governor Makinde did acknowledge Federal Government support during the inauguration of a transparent committee set up to oversee the disbursement of relief funds. That committee ensured accountability, compassion, and proper use of the funds.

“Of the N30 billion released, some money was transferred directly to victims as immediate support. Whilst the remainder was deployed for rebuilding and restoration.

“Roads within the affected axis were repaired, reconstruction is ongoing, and a planned memorial at ground zero will honour the lives lost. Policies and security architecture have also been upgraded and strengthened to ensure that such an incident does not recur in Oyo State.

“It is important to underline this point. The N4.5 billion often quoted as announced by the Oyo State government refers to direct support to victims. This represents 15 percent of the total sum released. Governor Makinde found a way of giving 15 percent back to landlords and even tenants as direct support in his usual show of empathy.

“The answer is not far-fetched. Governor Makinde recently stated, during a media chat, that he would not support President Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027. This declaration carries weight because he supported him in 2023, a decision he has since openly said he regrets.

“His reason is equally clear: the growing attempt by the current administration and its allies to push Nigeria towards a one-party state. That declaration marked a turning point.”

NJC shortlists 28 for appointment as FHC judges

The Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC) has shortlisted 28 lawyers for appointment as judges of the Federal High Court.

The shortlisted lawyers were among the 62 applicants who passed the computer-based test (CBT) conducted by the court for them.

The Nation learnt that the 34 others were dropped following the strict application of the screening process put in place by the leadership of the National Judicial Court (NJC).

In line with the new measure introduced by the NJC, the names of the 62 lawyers were published on September 17, inviting members of the public to submit feedback on the nominees’ integrity, reputation and suitability for judicial appointment.

The Nation also gathered that the FJSC dropped the 34 nominees after considering petitions and complaints from members of the public about the nominees.

The 28 shortlisted nominees are expected to face NJC’s interview panel on January 11 and 12, preparatory to the meeting of the NJC scheduled for January 13 and 14,  where the successful candidates will be named.

Confirming the development, NJC’s spokesperson, Mrs. Kami Ogendegbe, told The Nation that the council would decide on successful candidates.

The NJC spokesperson said the NJC “is determined not to lower the entry point bar no matter who is involved”.

She stressed that transparency and judicial integrity have remained a top priority for the Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun-led leadership of the NJC.

    • …says agreement should be agreement in Rivers State

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Sunday cautioned those he described as “emergency singers” of the slogan “On your mandate, we shall stand” to honour existing agreements, declaring that no one can deceive them with sudden displays of support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Wike stressed that agreements must be respected, noting that late political sloganeering would not erase past realities. “For us here, agreement is agreement. You can be singing ‘on your mandate we shall stand’ in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which is fine, but we have been supporting the President since 2023. Your new slogans will not help you,” he said.

The minister made the remarks during his Christmas visits to Emohua and Ikwerre Local Government Areas of Rivers State.

Addressing the Ikwerre people, Wike recalled how they took political risks to support President Tinubu at a time when many others were hesitant.

He noted that they embraced the slogan when the outcome of the 2023 presidential election was still uncertain.

“In 2023, when it was difficult and people did not know that Mr President would emerge, those of us from Ikwerre understood that politics is about risk. If you look at the votes that helped him win in Rivers State, they came particularly from Ikwerre,” Wike said.

“When it mattered most, we stood on his mandate, not this people now coming to shout on your mandate, when it was important they couldn’t shout on your mandate.

“You take stands when things are tough, not when food is ready. We took this position when things were tough, and we are still standing by it.

“The South must complete their eight years, and completing the eight years it doesn’t matter which party we belong to give Mr. President the support to succeed.

“In 2031, after the South must have completed its eight years through President Tinubu, we will know what next”.

  • BREAKING: Ibadan explosion: Fayose releases documents, insists Makinde got N50bn from FG

BREAKING: Ibadan explosion: Fayose releases documents, insists Makinde got N50bn from FG

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, has released what he described as documentary evidence to support his claim that Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, received N50 billion from the Federal Government as a special intervention fund following the January 2024 explosion in Ibadan.

Fayose made the documents public on Sunday in a statement accompanied by a memo from the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.

He said the disclosure followed a challenge by Makinde to substantiate his earlier claim that the Oyo State Government received the funds.

“Two days ago, I stated on national television that Oyo State under Governor Seyi Makinde received N50bn from the Federal Government as intervention for the Ibadan explosion. Yesterday, the governor asked me to provide evidence, and here is the evidence he requested,” Fayose said.

The former governor further alleged that only N4.5 billion was disbursed to victims of the explosion, accusing Makinde of diverting the remaining funds for personal political ambitions.

“Only N4.5bn was paid to victims of the Ibadan explosion. The rest, alongside other intervention funds, was diverted to fund his presidential ambition. This, in part, explains the crisis in the PDP and his frequent attacks on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his administration,” he alleged.

Fayose further said he was compelled to release official documents, despite his reluctance to do so, in the interest of transparency and public accountability.

“Even though it is not in my character to go public with official government documents, I had to do this so Nigerians will know who is saying the truth and who has not been sincere with the people of Oyo State,” he said.

The former governor said that Makinde’s alleged disclosure of detail from private meeting with President Tinubu made fuller public disclosure necessary.

He challenged the governor to take legal action if he believed the allegations were false, insisting that he had sufficient proof to defend his claims.

“I challenge Governor Seyi Makinde to sue me on this. There are also proofs of other intervention funds received from Tinubu’s administration by the Oyo State Government which the governor refused to disclose to the people,” he said.

He further claimed to have documentary evidence of Oyo State’s actual Internally Generated Revenue, contrary to figures publicly stated by Makinde, noting that he would release the details at a later time.

“There are documentary evidences on the actual Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of Oyo State, as against Governor Makinde’s claim, but we will keep our gunpowder dry for now.

“My name is still Ayo Fayose. I don’t say what I can’t prove,” he said.

  • After Tinubu, I’m Nigeria’s most abused politician, says Wike

After Tinubu, I’m Nigeria’s most abused politician, says Wike

    • Says he supported president when it was difficult to do so; would continue to back him

    • Minister faults Fubara’s inaugurated projects

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Chief Nyesom Wike, has described himself as the most abused politician in the country today after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Minister also declared yesterday that from January 2026, politics will start in Rivers State.

Wike spoke during a special thanksgiving service organised by the Chairman, South-South Development Commission (SSDC) and former Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Prince Chibudom Nwuche at his Ochiba country home in Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State at the weekend.

The former Rivers State governor who declared his unwavering stance supporting President Tinubu insisted that he never reneged on any agreement he entered into.

Wike used the opportunity of the thanksgiving to commend the people of Ahoada East and Ahoada West councils for backing him to support the President.

He said:  “This is the first local government we are coming to say thank you for being there for us all through these years

“You know, like the pastor said today, God detests those who are ungrateful. And so for what you’ve done for us, for standing with us, we say thank you. Thank you, and thank you.

“You remember, in 2023, when it was tough, nobody knows what will happen in that election. Somebody was saying that it will be difficult for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to win that election.

“So many people were not able to come and vote for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. But we all met, as leaders here, and you, to say in politics, we must take a stand and defend it; that we must take a decision, whether it is good or bad.

“But we know at the end of the day it will be  good. But we did it. When it was tough for people to say on your mandate we stand, we stood firm and said on your mandate we stand and to the glory of God, we stood.

“And today he is the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

He thanked the people for standing firm, saying,” so you are the ones who made the mandate to be strong as far as Rivers State is concerned. “

Wike condemned persons, who could not stand on Tinubu’s mandate when it was tough to do so but suddenly defected to his party at a rosy period to declare support for the President.

He said: “So all these people you are now seeing singing on your mandate we stand, that time, when they were needed most, they couldn’t sing that. They couldn’t come out to say, vote for Ahmed Bola Tinubu

“Now that you stood and voted for him, and even said, woman, I tell you, all your struggle will not go in vain. So we have come to tell you to remain strong.

“Nigerians know us. When we take a decision, we have taken a decision. We don’t take decision based on what people have seen.

“We take a decision based on what we are convinced. We believe that this will happen. You stood firm even when you were not in power. You stood firm even when you were not in council.

“You were harassed. You said, no, no despite the harassment, I will still stand where I am. So for us, it will be unfair that we cannot come and tell you, thank you.

“You know me, I believe in agreement. Anything you know you cannot do, don’t say it, don’t even enter into it. From January next year politics will start.

“Nobody can use us. So let me say yes and agree later. No, I can’t do that. Whatever you have agreed in the morning, it was agreed in the night. So, don’t be worried yourself about who was shouting or your mandate will start. We have shouted when it mattered most.

“If we did not shout it then would they shout now? Would they have shouted now? I have never hidden my position. Nigerians know. And you can attest to it.

“We have never wavered in support of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. If you want to know after Bola Tinubu, the next most abused politician is me. Why are they abusing me? Because they know agreement is what?

“When we have agreed on something, let’s implement it. If you cannot implement it, don’t even come to reach it. So for us, we have decided before now, long ago, that we must make sure we continue to support Ahmed Bola Tinubu.

“That is the position you took. And that is the position we are going to continue to take. So on behalf of our team, we want to thank you, our foot soldiers who have stood firm in spite of all provocations. “

Wike said some politicians in the home front, who went to get something from the governor, resorted to abusing and casting aspersions on him.

He also said most of the projects inaugurated recently by his successor had reached advanced stage and handed over to him in the spirit of continuity.

He said: “At the appropriate time, we will talk. This project you commissioned, who handed it over to you? We did it because we are a team.

“If we knew that we would not be a team, we would not have done it. But we did it, and we have no regrets. I have no regrets

“One thing you should know about Nigerian politics;you know, there is a universal state every time. How you can make money now for a universal state is like that. You go and say, enough is enough for Wike.

“Who deal with Wike, they drop (dish out money)  If you don’t say you will deal with Wike, you won’t get him. I hear we have about N600billion somewhere.

“So just say we will deal with Wike

The moment you pronounce that word, something will come down, “the FCT minister said in a mockery tone.

Earlier,  Nwuche explained that the people of Ekpeye Kingdom would continue to support Wike, for  the numerous projects he attracted to the area while he was governor.

He said: “For the first time, Ekpeye had seven first-class stools. Before now, we only had one. Governors came and left. None of them agreed to elevate our stools. Only him (Wike) did that for us.

“So, I’ve seen people who have used power wrongly. They forget that there’s karma. And that’s why I say Nigerians should be careful in choosing leadership. We know our leaders very well. Ask us about them.

“There are many of them who came into leadership by accident. They have no business being there because they have no human feelings.”

He said people, who found themselves in power should use it to elevate the people and better their lots and “not to oppress them, to break their homes and go.”

He said: “Nobody who follows Wike can say that he hasn’t been impacted positively. Nobody. That’s why you see, no matter where he goes, we shall go there”.

Nigeria’s northern neighbor, Niger Republic has promulgated a decree on mobilisation of its citizens in the aftermath of Thursday night’s collaborative assault by Nigeria and the US on terrorists’ camps in Sokoto State.

Less than  24 hours after the air strikes, Niger’s Council of Ministers met in Niamey under the chairmanship of General Abdurahamane Tiani and adopted a draft ordinance asking Nigeriens to be part of a general mobilisation  in defence of the country.

Tangaza Local Government area which was the main target of the Tomahawk missile strikes lies on   the border between Nigeria and Niger.

Nigerian and US officials have said the operations against terrorists in the north are ongoing.

The US has already resumed intelligence and surveillance operations in Sambisa forest in Borno State following the Sokoto missile attacks.

Under the Nigerien ordinance, citizens are required to respond immediately to call-ups, comply with requisitions, report hostile foreign nationals or obstructive activities, and refrain from communications that could undermine mobilisation efforts.

The ordinance is grounded in the country’s “Charter of Refoundation” and existing national defence legislation, underscoring the need to protect territorial integrity, sovereignty, the population, and vital state interests amid what authorities describe as escalating threats.

Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, all of which constitute the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), had last week formally launched a 5,000-strong joint military force known as the United Force of the AES (FU-AES) to check terrorism.

Designed to conduct joint counterterrorism operations, enhance border security, and improve intelligence sharing, the force marks a step toward collective defence among the three junta-led countries, which have distanced themselves from Western partners and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

US resumes surveillance of Sambisa forest

The US yesterday resumed intelligence and surveillance operations in Nigeria following the Sokoto strikes.

“The United States resumed ISR operations today on ISWAP in the Sambisa forest, Borno State in Northeast Nigeria, after a pause of one day following the strikes in Sokoto State,”blogger Brant Philip  said on X yesterday.

The ISR operation was launched soon after recent talks between National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Extend U.S.–Nigeria military strikes against terrorists to North-East, Ndume tells FG

The Senator representing Borno South, Mohammed Ali Ndume, yesterday hailed the Thursday airstrikes in Sokoto State, and called for the extension of the operation to the hideouts of terrorists in the North East.

“We welcome this cooperation between Nigeria and the United States in targeting terrorist hideouts,” Ndume said in a statement.

He asked the two countries to “extend it (missile strikes) to the North-East where ISWAP and Boko Haram have their three known black spots, Lake Chad, the Mandara Mountains and Sambisa Forest, which are exclusive strongholds of these groups.”

He said the military partnership with the United States should go beyond air strikes to include support for ground troops through training, intelligence sharing and logistics, as well as the deployment of attack helicopters to back ground operations.

He commended President Bola Tinubu for allocating what he described as the highest budgetary provision to defence in the 2026 Appropriation Bill but stressed the need for accountability and transparency in the utilisation of the funds.

Reacting to the recent suicide bomb attack at a mosque in Gamboru, Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, which claimed five lives and left many others injured, Ndume expressed condolences to the victims and their families.

US support is no violation of Nigeria’s sovereignty, says Shehu Sani

Also reacting to the partnership between Nigeria and the US,Senator Shehu Sani dismissed claims that the arrangement is in violation of Nigeria’s sovereignty.

“Our sovereignty has since been violated by terrorists and murderous gangs who have countlessly slaughtered our people, raped our women, burned down our villages, kidnapped our students and extorted billions in ransom,” he wrote on his verified X account @ShehuSani yesterday.

He added: “any military action taken with the consent or participation of our Government can’t be categorised as a violation of our sovereignty.

“We have lost hundreds of our gallant soldiers, thousands of our citizens and pumped billions of dollars for nearly two decades and counting.

“Terrorists have turned our North West region into a bloody theatre of endless funerals and perpetual bereavement. We have prayed and pampered enough.

“Their illusive, theocratic lunacy pursued through bloodshed and criminality must be confronted and defeated if we want to live in peace.

“The military action to incinerate and annihilate them is the only path to getting our country back.

“When you have a fire in your home or snakes in your room, you don’t have the luxury of selecting or screening those who will help you to extinguish it. Not just the US, if China,Russia or any African country wants to partner with our country to fumigate and deworm our country of these pests and evil forces, the Federal Government should welcome them.

“Those who are our friends should demonstrate their friendship in times of our urgent needs. However, the ULTIMATE security of our country lies with the NIGERIAN ARMY and the effectiveness of our other security agencies in the service of our country and not with President Trump.”

Omokri: ADC attack on Nigeria, US  airstrike on terrorists is unfortunate

Ambassador –designate, Reno Omokri deplored the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for condemning the airstrikes against terrorists in Sokoto State.

National Publicity Secretary of the party,   Bolaji Abdullahi had branded the strikes as evidence of the President Bola Tinubu administration’s incapacity to secure the country.

Omokri described the opposition party’s statement as irresponsible and against the interest of Nigerians it seeks to govern, pointing out that the ADC has never condemned acts of terror in the country.

“I find it particularly disturbing that the African Democratic Congress never released a ballistic statement against terrorists when they strike and massacre innocent Nigerian citizens,” Omokri said in a statement.

“Yet this same African Democratic Congress has released perhaps its most strongly worded statement against the Nigerian and American governments after the joint coordinated strike against bloodthirsty terrorists.”

He challenged the party to reproduce one statement by it criticising terrorists the way its statement blasted the Federal Government.

“They are quiet when terror strikes and loquacious when you strike terror,” Omokri said, emphasising, “They say nothing when foreign terrorists breach Nigeria’s sovereignty, but explode when our international partners work with us to protect our sovereignty.”

Wondering whose interest the ADC was protecting, the former presidential aide, asked the party to consider changing its motto from ‘Arise and Shine Nigeria’ to ‘Arise and Protect Terrorists!’

COAS to troops: eliminate all terrorist threats

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, yesterday urged troops of 8 Division, Sokoto, to sustain operational momentum and decisively eliminate terrorists within their Area of Responsibility (AOR).

The COAS gave the charge  when he addressed troops of 248 Reconnaissance Battalion, Illela, Sokoto State, during an operational visit to formations and units under the 8 Division AOR.

“You must maintain the momentum to further annihilate and send the terrorists to their maker who is to decide what to do with them.

“We can no longer tolerate their excesses against the Nigerian people” the COAS said.

He commended the troops for their gallantry, professionalism and resilience in confronting criminal elements whose activities have brought untold hardship to citizens.

The Army Chief also lauded the troops for their operational successes, noting that their sustained efforts have significantly improved security within the AOR.

He said: “It is heartwarming to witness the Eyo 2025 Festival being held in honour of our late distinguished leaders – Brigadier-General Mobolaji Olufunsho Johnson (rtd), Alhaji Lateef KayodeJakande, and, Chief Michael AgboladeOtedola –, as well as my beloved mother, Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, the Iyaloja General of Nigeria and a highly revered women’s leader.

He also congratulated the people and government of Lagos State, as well as the traditional institutions in the state, especially the Oba of Lagos, HRM Oba Riliwanu Akiolu, on the success of the 2025 Eyo Festival.

Speaking earlier, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the Eyo Festival is a unique cultural symbol and a strong expression of Lagos’ identity, which reflects a powerful affirmation of Lagos’ identity, resilience, and unbroken connection to history.

He said: “The Eyo tradition, which escorts great contributors to the ancestral realm, is not bound by immediacy but by worthiness. Today, through this long-awaited rite, we affirm that their legacies endure and that their wisdom continues to guide our collective journey.

“Lagos, the heartbeat of Nigeria, draws its soul from moments such as this. The Eyo Festival is far more than pageantry; it is a living archive of our Yoruba heritage and a symbol of unity, purity, and communal strength. Across generations, it has marked transitions of kings, leaders, and epochs. Its return after eight years reasserts Lagos as the proud custodian of Nigeria’s living culture – a city where tradition is not abandoned but elevated.

“Beyond its cultural depth, the Eyo Festival projects Lagos onto the global stage. Today, our streets become a theatre of history, our talking drums a universal language, and our white-clad Eyos, ambassadors of identity. This festival strengthens tourism, stimulates economic activity, creates opportunities, and invites the world to experience the spirit of Eko.

“As we watch the Eyos glide with solemn grace, let this moment renew our commitment to preserving our heritage even as we advance boldly under our THEMES Plus agenda. For us, progress is most meaningful when it is rooted in memory, culture, and shared values.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu said this year’s Eyo Festival carries great significance because it collectively honours four eminent figures whose lives shaped the course of Lagos and Nigeria.

The Governor noted that “Mama Abibatu Mogaji, in particular, remains an enduring symbol of the strength and enterprise of Lagos women. As a market leader, activist, philanthropist, and political pathfinder, she embodied courage, discipline, and service. These are all the attributes and virtues that she passed on to our revered leader and father, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR. His activities as president so far. He has demonstrated compassion, courage, resilience, and passion for a great Nigeria.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu also congratulated the Oba of Lagos, His Royal Majesty Oba Rilwanu Akiolu; the White Cap Chiefs; the Akinsiku of Lagos (Olori Eyo); the Council of Adamuorisa; and the people of Lagos State for what he described as a historic cultural milestone.

He also congratulated the families of the honourees and urged their descendants to sustain the legacy of service and excellence associated with their names.

In his remarks for this year’s Eyo Festival, Dr Hamzat said the fun, pageantry and symmetry that characterised the Eyo Festival are the evident and immediate gains of staging the performance. “Eyo Festival is a beautiful blend of character and culture which defines the essence of Lagos,” he said.

In his royal remarks for the event, Oba Akiolu said the Eyo Festival is a meditation on leadership, legacy and communal responsibility, noting that it underscores the reciprocal bond between rulers and the ruled, reminding the community that honouring leadership is inseparable from preserving collective values.
