Stable Naira, food price cash drop inflation to 1 8.02%

Nigeria’s inflation rate recorded its biggest drop in recent period to 18.02 per cent in September as above average decline in prices of basic food items, a stable currency and improved costs of logistics sustained improvement in average cost of living.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) yesterday released its latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) Report showing that headline inflation rate dropped by 210 basis points from 20.12 per cent in August 2025 to 18.02 per cent in September 2025. It was the sixth consecutive time since April 2025.

The decline in headline inflation rate was driven by broad improvements in prices, especially with substantial drop in prices of food items. Food inflation had dropped by 500 basis points from 21.87 per cent in August 2025 to 16.87 points in September 2025.

The decline in food inflation was attributed to decrease in the average prices of common food items like maize grains, garri, beans, millet, potatoes, onions, eggs, tomatoes and fresh pepper among others.

Core inflation- which measures all items excluding farm produce and energy, dropped by 80 basis points to 19.53 per cent in September 2025 as against 20.33 per cent in August 2025.

The continuing disinflation mirrored analysts’ consensus on the price outlook, with headline inflation expected to drop further in the months ahead.

The NBS attributed the disinflation to the crash in the cost of food, energy and transportation.

NBS stated: “The average annual rate of food inflation for the twelve months ending September 2025 over the previous twelve-month average was 24.06 per cent, which was 13.47 per cent points lower compared with the average annual rate of change recorded in September 2024 at 37.53 per cent”.

The NBS report outlined disparity in prices across the country with all-items inflation rate for September 2025 highest in Adamawa, 23.69 per cent; Katsina, 23.53 per cent; and Nasarawa, with 22.29 per cent while Anambra, 9.28 per cent; Niger, 11.79 per cent and Bauchi, with 12.36 per cent recorded the lowest headline inflation rates.

Economists and finance experts yesterday were unanimous that the continuing disinflation reflected the improvements in macroeconomic environment.

They however called for concerted fiscal policies to significantly expand the macroeconomic gains on the living conditions of the citizenry.

Experts expected the continuing disinflation to translate into further reduction in benchmark interest rate and stronger naira, potentially enhancing consumers’ purchasing power.

The NBS report came a day after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) raised Nigeria’s growth forecast to 3.9 per cent in 2025 and 4.1 per cent in 2026, citing improvements in the country’s macroeconomic outlook.

The IMF stated that the upgrade of its national growth projection for Nigeria was also based on favourable domestic situation.

Chief Executive Officer, Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE), Dr Muda Yusuf, said the decline in inflation rate was “a significant indicator of improving macroeconomic conditions and policy traction”.

He however called for coordinated policies to improve average household purchasing power, consumer confidence, and real incomes.

“The gains achieved so far must therefore be consolidated through decisive and well-targeted policy actions,” Yusuf said.

According to him, the sustained disinflation trend is a welcome development and a sign of improving macroeconomic fundamentals, but government must do more to address fundamental basis of high cost of livings for low- and middle-income households.

He said: “The next phase of reform must therefore prioritize welfare-focused and cost-reduction measures that deliver tangible relief to citizens.

“Business confidence is rising, but consumer confidence remains fragile. Policies that enhance productivity, stabilise prices, and reduce the structural cost of doing business will not only strengthen the disinflation trajectory but also foster inclusive and sustainable economic recovery.

“With consistency, coordination, and structural reforms, Nigeria can achieve a stable single-digit inflation rate over the medium term — anchoring growth, improving welfare, and restoring confidence in the economy”.

He outlined that in order to consolidate the current gains and sustain the disinflation momentum, the government must enhance food security and agricultural productivity, reduce logistics and transport costs, address energy and production costs, expand access to affordable finance and deepen reforms in port and trade logistics.

Analysts at SCM Capital said disinflation trend reflected gains from economic reforms, foreign exchange (forex) rate stability and seasonal food supply dynamics.

“Inflation is projected to decline further in October 2025, supported by sustained forex stability, moderating input costs, and improved domestic supply conditions. The harvest season should further ease food prices, extending the disinflation trend.

“With inflation easing for six consecutive months, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) may consider another rate cut to stimulate growth. Overall, price pressures are expected to remain subdued, sustaining the economy’s momentum”, SCM Capital stated.

Analysts at CardinalStone noted that the “moderating inflation bodes well for Nigeria’s currency valuation”.

Analysts pointed out that the decline in food inflation in September was atypical of the range in recent years, but was relatively common between 1996 and 2005, a period marked by greater food security.

Analysts said the magnitude of the current month-on-month decline was larger than the historical average of 0.65 per cent observed during those earlier periods.

“This outsized food inflation decline may have been partly prompted by the recent material drop in market food prices and easing security concerns,” CardinalStone stated.

According to analysts, the ongoing disinflationary trends bode well for currency valuation with the combination of a sustained current account surplus and a steady build-up in forex reserves expected to underpin further naira appreciation.

CardinalStone projected that naira would close the year within the range of N1,400 and N1,450 per dollar.

“The softer inflation outlook reinforces the case for additional monetary easing by the CBN at its November policy meeting. We expect a 100 basis points reduction in Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) to 26.0 per cent.

“Lower inflation and an expected policy rate cut are likely to drive further yield compression across the naira credit market. While the curve may remain inverted, we expect a sharper adjustment at the short end of the curve.

“In October, we see scope for further moderation in inflation, as the drivers that were obtainable in September 2025 are likely to persist,” CardinalStone stated.

Why PDP leaders, govs are joining APC – Wike

…flags off construction of the main carriageways on the outer southern expressway in Abuja

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday said leaders and governors of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) due to the capacity of President Bola Tinubu.

Wike said those who once criticised the president are now members of the APC.

He disclosed this at the flag-off of the construction of the main carriageways on the outer southern expressway in Abuja.

The minister said Tinubu has shown leadership and the ability to deliver the dividends of democracy.

Wike said he has been justified that Mr President is a performer, adding that the governors should rather commend him for “doing a good job” of paving the way for them to join the ruling party.

He said, “I have been watching on daily television and social media, people who said I want to destabilize the party, I am working for the APC. All of them are now in the APC. So, which means if it is true, they should commend me for working for where they are heading. So, I should be commended for doing a good job for them”.

In the past 48 hours, the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, resigned his membership of the PDP and joined the ruling APC, stating that his decision was in the interest of national development under President Tinubu’s leadership.

Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, also resigned his membership of the party on Wednesday, along with 19 members of the State House of Assembly, making the fourth PDP governor to defect ahead of the 2027 general elections, bringing the number of PDP governors from 11 as of October 2024, to only eight as of today.

The Minister noted that the governors no longer had an excuse as the “decisive leadership” of President Tinubu had ensured that every state had enough resources to pay salaries and embark on credible projects and activities.

Wike said, “Let every state be sincere to their people, and to Nigerians. I was a governor for eight years. I was a governor running around banks to look for money to do projects. Sometimes, every month, the money that comes will not be enough to pay salaries and all other allowances, not to talk about doing projects.

“Today, by the leadership of somebody, by the decisive leadership of somebody who has made it possible for all the states, and the Federal Capital Territory, not to be running around banks again. Rather, banks are now looking for states to say ‘look, don’t throw us away, we are here.

“Somebody has made that possible; every state now has money, not only to pay salaries, not only to carry out government activities, but also to embark on projects. It was not like that before”.

He described the decision to defect and support the Tinubu-led administration as “worthwhile”, adding that no governor will leave debts for their successors any longer, as it used to happen.

The minister said, “So, if, for that reason, so many people are going to support Mr President, I think it is worthwhile. Now, no governor will talk about leaving debts for his successor, unlike what used to happen before. That is the leadership of somebody.

“And that’s what this country needs for now. Visionary leadership, purposeful leadership, that will be able to make decisions. Decisions that people were running away from taking when they had the opportunity”.

The FCT Minister of State, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, described the project as a bold step toward easing traffic flow, stimulating economic activities, and enhancing mobility for residents across the Federal Capital Territory.

She said the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu constantly reminds Nigerians that progress is built not only in policy but in the visible transformation of lives and communities.

In the same breath, Mahmoud hailed the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, for his unwavering energy, foresight, and passion in ensuring that infrastructure development in the FCT is both meaningful and people-centered.

According to her, “under your watch, the FCT has truly become a construction powerhouse and a beacon of national renewal.”

The report explained that this shows that the headline inflation rate (year-on-year basis) decreased in September 2025 compared to the same month in the preceding year (i.e., September 2024), though with a different base year, November 2009 = 100.

On a month-on-month basis, however, NBS said the headline inflation rate in September 2025 was 0.72 per cent, which was 0.02 per cent lower than the rate recorded in August 2025 (0.74 per cent).

According to the report, this means that in September 2025, the rate of increase in the average price level was lower than the rate of increase in the average price level in August 2025.

BREAKING: Ben Murray-Bruce dumps PDP, joins APC

Former federal lawmaker, Ben Murray-Bruce, who represented the Bayelsa East Senatorial District, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He made the announcement on Wednesday in a statement he signed and posted on his Facebook page.

Murray-Bruce lauded the President Bola Tinubu-led administration, stating that for the “first time in our nation’s history, we have a President who truly understands finance, who sees the economy not as a political slogan, but as a living organism that must be disciplined, deregulated, and allowed to breathe”.

He expressed confidence in Tinubu’s ongoing economic reforms, describing them as the foundation for the country’s future prosperity.

Murray-Bruce, who has known Tinubu since 1998, praised the president’s deep understanding of finance and commitment to a free-market economy.

“I have known President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu since 1998. I know the man’s mind, his courage, and his conviction. He is not driven by applause; he is driven by results. And today, I can boldly say to you that he is on the right track.

“For the first time in our nation’s history, we have a President who truly understands finance, who sees the economy not as a political slogan, but as a living organism that must be disciplined, deregulated, and allowed to breathe.

He highlighted the administration’s efforts to stabilize the economy, strengthen the naira, and restore investor confidence through professional leadership at the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Murray-Bruce also commended Tinubu’s national security reforms, noting that the appointment of the National Security Adviser has significantly improved Nigeria’s safety architecture, with insecurity being “quietly and systematically dismantled.”

“The painful reforms we face today are the very foundation of tomorrow’s prosperity. We are moving into a free-market economy, one that rewards hard work and innovation instead of dependency and distortion.

“Look around you: under this administration, the appointment of the National Security Adviser has redefined our national safety architecture. Insecurity is being quietly and systematically dismantled. The Central Bank, now professionally steered, is stabilizing the economy, rebuilding confidence, and restoring the dignity of the naira.

“Our foreign policy is again respected. Our fuel supply is deregulated. We will never again live through the humiliation of fuel scarcity. The numbers are beginning to speak, investments are returning, and the world is watching Nigeria rise again.

“And beyond economics, Bola Tinubu’s infrastructural drive is unprecedented; from massive road networks to modernized ports, airports and housing schemes springing up across the nation. These developments are not just concrete and steel; they are the arteries through which growth and opportunity now flow.

“I know it is still a difficult season for many families. But as history teaches, reform is never painless. Yet, it is in these moments of sacrifice that nations are reborn.

“That is why today, I am joining the All Progressives Congress (APC), not for politics, but for progress. Because I believe that Bola Tinubu’s leadership, guided by courage and intellect, will deliver the Nigeria we have all dreamed of.

“Mark my words: in the full term of eight years, Nigeria will witness phenomenal growth. I choose to stand with that vision. I choose to stand with reform. I choose to stand with the future.

“Thank you, and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

PDP state chairmen distance forum from suit seeking to stop national convention

The forum of state chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday dissociated itself from the lawsuit currently before the Federal High Court, Abuja, seeking to halt the planned elective national Convention scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.

Speaking with newsmen, chairman of the forum and chairman of the party in Edo state, Tony Aziegbemi, took a swipe at some of their colleagues, Austine Nwachukwu (Imo) and Amah Abraham Nnana (Abia), for dragging the party to court seeking to halt the PDP convention.

He said as a result of this, the Forum has decided to suspend the two Chairmen, while calling on the National Working Committee to take disciplinary action against any NWC member found to be directly or indirectly connected to the court case.

Aziegbemi said, “We distance ourselves completely from the suit and the plan to use it to stop the PDP from holding its National Convention. This is not right. We want to state clearly that we are solidly behind the Damagum-led NWC, and we will give our full support to ensure a hitch-free convention.

“The evil plot of the APC to turn Nigeria into a one-party state will never succeed. We hope other organs of the party will draw inspiration from our decision. We must all stand firm and make the right choices.”

Mbah: joining APC not out of fear but for prosperity

    • Carnival-like reception for Enugu governor, elected, appointed officials into ruling party

The All Progressives Congress (APC) deepened its inroads into the Southeast yesterday with the defection of Enugu State Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah into its fold.

The party rolled out the red carpet to welcome Mbah, now the third APC governor in the five-state geopolitical zone.

From Vice President Kashim Shettima, who led the reception, to National Chairman Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and Progressives Governors’ Forum (PGF) Chairman Hope Uzodimma, top party leaders and former governors turned out before a huge crowd to receive Mbah and his team.

Governor Mbah said his defection was not driven by fear but by a desire to lead Enugu and its people toward prosperity and align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reform agenda.

“We are not moving from a place of resentment or fear. We are confident of our future. We have no axe to grind, no personal point to make. But fairness, respect, and integrity must guide our choices for that future to be ours,” he said.

Describing President Tinubu as “a partner in purpose and a leader with the courage to make tough choices for lasting prosperity,” Mbah said his administration’s development philosophy aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Earlier in a town hall meeting, Mbah formally announced his defection before national and local APC officials, elected representatives, and political appointees.

APC National Secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru, Deputy National Chairman (North) Alhaji Ali Dalori, and his southern counterpart Chief Emma Eneukwu were present.

The main event followed in the afternoon, where Shettima, Yilwatda, and other leaders formally received the governor.

Shettima described the day as “a great day for the nation and for Ndigbo,” quoting Kenyan scholar Ali Mazrui, who once likened the Igbo to “the Nigerian Jews — mobile, enterprising, and ambitious.”

“With the coming of Governor Peter Mbah, and with the continuous energy being exhibited by Governors Hope Uzodimma and Francis Nwifuru, I believe Ndigbo have come back to the mainstream of Nigerian politics,” Shettima said.

He praised Mbah as “a progressive through and through,” declaring him APC’s new leader in Enugu State.

“From our constitution, the governor is the leader of the party in his state. You are now the leader of the APC family in Enugu. We are one big family tied in a common destiny,” he said.

Shettima said defections by opposition party members do not only reflect deep cracks in their camps but underscore the strength of the APC.

He said: “Much has been said about the ongoing wave of defections to our great party.

“What the opposition has failed to do is look into the mirror to ask why the APC remains the preferred destination of Nigeria’s most visionary political actors.

“Their departures are not accidents; they reveal the cracks in the walls they built and the strength of the bridges we have constructed.

‘’The APC has become a political home where ideas find expression, where ambitions find direction, and where patriotism finds partnership.”

    Akpabio, Abbas, Yilwatda, others speak

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, APC Chairman Yilwatda, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, and Governors Uzodimma and Nwifuru said Mbah’s defection marked a new political chapter in the Southeast.

Presenting the party flag and symbolic broom to Mbah, Yilwatda said:

“Your Excellency, take this broom and sweep out the remaining PDP members into the APC. Governor Mbah has taken his people from Egypt to the promised land — from depression to progress.”

    Akpabio hailed Mbah’s performance, saying:

“What I’m seeing here, Enugu is even more beautiful than Abuja. The only place that compares is Akwa Ibom when I was governor,” he joked, drawing laughter.

Speaker Abbas described the event as “a celebration of unity and expansion,” saying APC was now positioned to take over the Southeast by 2027.

Uzodimma said the defection “further integrates the Southeast into national politics,” while Ebonyi Governor Francis Nwifuru urged Mbah to “forgive those who wronged you and carry everyone along.”

Former governors Rochas Okorocha, Orji Uzor Kalu, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and Sullivan Chime, as well as former Senate President Ken Nnamani and PDP state chairman Martin Chukwunweike, attended the ceremony.

    A scene to remember

The event began shortly after Shettima arrived at 4:13 p.m., accompanied by a powerful delegation of APC governors, National Assembly leaders, ministers, and other political figures, and virtually shut down parts of the state capital.

The number of vehicles conveying party faithful and guests caused gridlock along Presidential Road, Government House Avenue, Toscana Junction, and the High Court area of Independence Layout.

Thousands of residents, especially supporters, trooped out to witness what was described as a turning point in the political history of the Southeast, especially Enugu State.

Security was tight with combined teams of police, Department of State Security(DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The Ministry of Transport officials were on hand to manage the crowd on the major roads and the arena of the event.

Cultural troupes, frenzied drummers made the ceremony look like a carnival.
