President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in Rome, Italy, ahead of the Aqaba Process Heads of State and Government meeting, which will focus on tackling the growing security crisis in West Africa.

The Presidential aircraft touched down at the Rome Fiumicino International Airport at about 7:20 p.m local time on Sunday, where the president was received by senior Italian officials, members of the Nigerian diplomatic corps, and top aides.

The high-level meeting, which opens on Tuesday, will bring together Heads of State and Government, senior intelligence and military officials from African countries, as well as representatives of intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations.

Participants are expected to deliberate on the evolving security landscape in West Africa and develop coordinated responses to terrorism and transnational crime.

Launched in 2015 by King Abdullah II of Jordan, the Aqaba Process is a global counter-terrorism initiative aimed at enhancing cooperation and intelligence sharing among nations confronting violent extremism.

The current edition, co-chaired by the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Italian Government, will focus on the complex security threats facing the region, including the expansion of terrorist networks, the growing nexus between crime and terrorism, and the overlap between land-based insurgency in the Sahel and maritime piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.

According to an earlier statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu will not only participate in the plenary sessions but will also hold bilateral meetings with other world leaders to explore collaborative measures to curb insecurity across the subregion.

The sessions are expected to examine strategies to counter terrorism, combat online radicalisation, and disrupt digital networks used to promote extremist propaganda and recruitment.

    BREAKING: Super Eagles arrive Uyo

The Super Eagles of Nigeria arrived safely in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, on Sunday morning at about 8:05 a.m.

Earlier, The Nation had reported that the team made an emergency stop in Luanda, Angola, on Saturday after experiencing a mid-air technical issue following their 2-1 victory over Lesotho.

According to a statement from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the aircraft was forced to land due to a cracked windscreen, which caused the in-flight scare.

With their arrival in Uyo, the Super Eagles will immediately shift focus to preparations for their crucial World Cup qualifying clash against Benin Republic on Tuesday, as they seek maximum points to boost their qualification hopes for next year’s tournament.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday took a swipe at the governors and other members defecting from the party, describing them as cowards.

Speaking during the inauguration of the media and publicity sub-committee of the party’s national convention in Abuja yesterday, the Bauchi State governor and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum (PDP-GF), Alhaji Bala Mohammed, wondered why the defectors would abandon the party on account of the actions of other party members.

Bala’s statement came ahead of the plan by Enugu State governor, Peter Mbah, to formally dump the PDP for the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday.

There are also strong speculations that Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State and Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba would soon dump the beleaguered party.

Earlier in the year, two governors—Sheriff Oborewori of Delta State and Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom—had defected from PDP to APC, taking with them the entire party machinery in their states.

But charging PDP members not to be dissuaded by the wave of defections, the Bauchi State governor said: “We are confident. Please, be emboldened. Don’t be disturbed by the defections and the shenanigans and the Doubting Thomases. “Staying back to fight is what makes a man or woman. It’s an act of cowardice to leave because of one man or woman.

“You are also men and women of strength and courage.”

Senator Mohammed said that while he was concerned about the spate of defections from the PDP, the party would not stop anybody from leaving because defection is a matter of personal decision.

He said the situation would have been worse if he and some other party leaders had not worked round the clock to address the issues responsible for such actions.

The governor, who heads the Publicity and Communications Sub-Committee for the party’s elective convention scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State said a lot was being done behind the scene to reduce the rate of defections.

He accused the ruling APC of planning to turn the country into a one-party state by intimidating the opposition, but said the PDP would remain strong “as the only democratic party in the country”.

He said the PDP has suffered a lot, but has continued to weather the storm because it remains the only true and democratic party in the country today.

The governor said: “If you ask me whether I am concerned about our governors leaving for APC, I am more than concerned. But leadership is a burden.

“As a leader of a group of equal status, I cannot determine the decisions or inactions of my colleagues, but certainly, a lot of work is being done behind the scenes.

“The defections would have been more devastating, but we have been talking and discussing.

“You know the style of leadership of the APC-led federal government in trying to make this country a one-party state.

“They have the power of coercion; they have the power of everything.

“I cannot say that my colleagues are wrong. They are free to do whatever they choose.

“But I have been advising them that even those who left are not finding it easier, because most of the people at the grassroots level are PDP and are not happy with the defections.

“Sometimes, it is done because of permutations and calculations. I will not denigrate or speak negatively about my colleagues, but I assure you.”

Asked whether he also planned to leave the PDP, the Governor Mohammed said: “I am not going anywhere. I am in PDP, and my state has no element of division.

“Even today, I saw in the news that one of my senators is going.

“They are being cajoled. They are being bought. But certainly, the state is PDP, and the nation is PDP because Nigerians want change, and they believe they can get it through the PDP.

“Most of the measurable achievements by the federal government were done by PDP regimes.

“By the grace of God, if we stand firm, we will deliver.

“Nobody stops you from leaving, so that you can create another space for others to come around and contribute to governance.

“Some of us who won as governors were not even considered capable, and here we are.

“That is what will play out in 2027. I am optimistic that we will get a new set of leaders in 2027 who will defeat the deceptive style of the APC by coming up with true leaders who will listen to Nigerians and address their challenges by the grace of God.

“If somebody goes, it’s just like the barracks; soldiers go, soldiers come.

“Please, don’t blame anybody at the governor’s level.

“We are doing our best, but it is beyond our control.

“Please, be emboldened. Don’t be disturbed by the defections, by the shenanigans, by all those doubting Thomases.

“Yes, you should be encouraged, because staying back to fight is what makes a man or a woman.

“It is an act of cowardice to leave because of one or two people.

“You are also men and women of strength and integrity.”

Speaking on the party’s plans for a successful national convention and the pockets of grievances across the country, the governor said: “I cannot speak for the National Working Committee. But as a leader within the party, I know they are doing their best to address issues of litigations.

“Many are artificially created to undermine us. But we don’t have any faction in the PDP.

“At the state level, I have even seen some people taking us to court not to go for a convention. This is not good and makes some of them at the National Assembly feel unsafe.

“We are addressing these issues squarely. If you check well and comparatively, you will discover that most of the other parties in the opposition are not better off than us.

“We are better off than most opposition parties. Some don’t even have leadership at the national level. We are the only ones intact—with one National Secretary, one National Chairman, and one Publicity Secretary.

“This meeting gives hope that at the end of the day, we will deliver.

“As a big party with a history since 1999, still with the same logo, colors, manifesto and leadership, we should commend the National Working Committee for doing well despite limitations.

“We have to really change the narrative. This is a party to be in.

“We have been suffering a lot as a party, but we have been weathering the storm, and we will continue to weather the storm.

“This convention is here to stay. We are going to Ibadan by the grace of God, and no Jupiter will stop us. No dark forces will succeed over us.

“The dark forces, if they succeed over PDP, they have succeeded over Nigeria.

“We have to change governance style of this country, and this is the beginning.

“This is the time to do it.

“We have never suffered as a country as we are suffering today under the APC.

“You have seen what is happening. We don’t have to go into deep melancholy and be crying as whipping boys or girls.

“We have to do something within the democratic space to change the leadership, to change the nation.”

Speaking on the planned defection of Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, who is also the Secretary of the PDP Convention Planning Committee, Gov Mohammed said: “Actually, Governor Mbah has not told us his position. It is a personal decision.

“We cannot remove his picture (as Secretary of the convention committee) before he leaves. When he leaves, we will replace him with another person.

“But up till now, he has not told me he is leaving. I have discussed this issue with him separately, and he has given me assurances.

“He’s a governor like me. I respect him and his decisions. If he goes, we will replace him.”

Speaking on speculations about the possibility of him running for the Presidency on a joint ticket with former President Goodluck Jonathan, Governor Mohammed said “People are still interested in this party, and these big names being associated with us make us happy.

“As governors, we have resolved to put personal interests aside.

“I have exceeded my personal expectations. I stepped out to be a presidential candidate in the 2023 election, but I stepped down to become a governor.

“I have done my best and I’m happy. But I am prepared to serve in any capacity I am called upon to serve.

“But we have removed personal interests. We are united and will come up with leadership that will be the best choice for Nigerians to put in Aso Rock, insha Allah”.

Speaking on Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara, who is supposed to be the deputy chairman of the publicity sub-committee, he said: “He has not left the party; he is still in PDP.

“Everybody has his own style. He is a humble young man who has gone through so much and has done well to accommodate all the problems and challenges he found himself in.

“Certainly, he is still in PDP, and to me, he is still my deputy.”

Mbah’s defection will change Igbo story in APC — Enugu caretaker chairman Nwoye

The newly inaugurated Chairman of the Enugu State APC Caretaker Committee, Dr. Ben Nwoye, has described the planned defection of Governor Peter Mbah from the PDP to the APC as a defining political moment for the Southeast region, saying it will “change the Igbo story” in the nation’s ruling party.

Speaking with journalists at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu yesterday, shortly after his arrival from Abuja, Nwoye said the entire political structure of Enugu State would officially join the APC on Tuesday in what he called a “historic alignment” between transformation and renewed hope.

According to Nwoye, Mbah’s entry into the APC marks the end of Enugu’s decade-long stint in opposition and ushers in a new phase of political inclusion and national relevance for the Southeast.

“For the past 10 years, Enugu State has remained in opposition. But all that ends on Tuesday when Governor Peter Mbah declares for the APC. And he is not coming alone,” Nwoye said.

He disclosed that the defection would involve the governor, his appointees, 260 councillors, 24 state lawmakers, National Assembly members and the entire state executive council.

“Where Enugu goes, the Southeast goes. This marks the beginning of the Southeast’s political reawakening and full integration into national politics,” he added.

Nwoye, who took his oath of office at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja on Friday, commended Mbah’s performance in his two years as governor, describing him as a symbol of innovation and transformational leadership.

“Before now, the Southeast had been left out of the main protocols of governance. But with Mbah’s entry into the APC, the Igbo story will change for the better.

“Peter Mbah is not joining the APC for himself but for his people,” he stated.

Highlighting Mbah’s achievements in governance, Nwoye said Enugu State had become a national model of innovation and efficiency.

“We are no longer talking about just paving roads. We are talking about disruptive innovation, from coding initiatives to modern governance systems, all within two years.

“If he could achieve that as an opposition governor, imagine what he could do as a progressive,” Nwoye enthused.

He also assured that under the new political alignment, appointments for Enugu people at the federal level would now originate from within the state rather than through external influences.

“When we say Enugu needs to be connected to the centre, this is what it truly means,” Nwoye declared.

…nullifies all suspensions in Enugu APC, calls for unity

The newly inaugurated Caretaker Committee Chairman of the APC in Enugu State, Dr. Ben Nwoye, yesterday announced the nullification of all suspensions previously imposed on party members by the recently dissolved Ugochukwu Agballa-led executive committee.

The chairman also declared the suspensions “null, void and of no effect.”

Nwoye, who returned to the helm of the party following the dissolution of the Agballa-led executive by the APC National Working Committee (NWC) last Thursday, made the announcement while addressing a large gathering of party leaders and supporters at the APC Secretariat in Enugu yesterday, shortly after returning from Abuja.

Among those affected by the earlier suspensions were former Senate President Ken Nnamani; former Governor Sullivan Chime; former Speaker and current Secretary of the Caretaker Committee, Barr. Eugene Odoh; former Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama and former Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mr. Osita Okechukwu, among others.

Describing the series of suspensions under the Agballa leadership as a “political caricature” that weakened the party’s cohesion, Nwoye said such actions were counterproductive and inimical to progress.

“How can you suspend the very people you need to win elections?” he queried.

He therefore declared all forms of suspensions, whether issued through letters, audio messages, or radio announcements, as invalid, emphasising that the party must now embark on genuine reconciliation and reintegration of all aggrieved members.

According to Nwoye, the national leadership of the APC had given him a clear mandate to return to Enugu and rebuild the party’s unity ahead of critical political contests in the state.

The caretaker chairman further observed that the political atmosphere in Enugu had significantly changed with the emergence of Governor Peter Mbah, describing his coming as a “new political dawn” for the APC in the state.

He warned that the party could no longer afford division or complacency in the evolving political landscape.

“With the right strategy and unity of purpose, APC will not remain on the sidelines in Enugu. We will be the party that sets the agenda and defines the next political direction of this state,” Nwoye stated.

Earlier, on arrival at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, Nwoye told reporters that with Governor Peter Mbah’s entry into the APC, Enugu would “regain all that it had lost in the past.”

He described Mbah as a transformational leader who had achieved remarkable progress across various sectors within two years in office, adding that the governor’s move to the APC was for the collective good of his people.

Our correspondent reports that there was wild jubilation at the airport as enthusiastic APC members trooped out in large numbers to welcome Nwoye and members of his caretaker committee back to the state.

PDP candidate in Zamfara by-election defects to APC

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the recently concluded Kaura Namoda South Constituency by-election in Zamfara State, Mohammed Lawal, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Lawal, who was defeated in the by-election by the APC candidate, Kamilu Sa’idu, announced his defection on Saturday during a consultation meeting for Zamfara Central organised by the APC support group, Yazeed Project, in Gusau, the state capital.

Explaining the reason for his decision, Lawal said the PDP neglected him after the election despite his contributions to the party’s success in previous polls.

“What influenced my decision to leave the PDP is personal. I am convinced that Governor Dauda Lawal has no feeling for the majority of people who worked day and night for his victory,” he said.

“I decided to join the APC because of their good intention and vision that convinced me.”

He expressed confidence in the leadership of the APC under the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, former governor Sen. Abdul’aziz Yari, and the state party chairman, Tukur Danfulani, saying the party would continue to grow stronger under their guidance.

Bauchi Senator quits PDP over internal crisis

The Senator representing Bauchi North, Samaila Dahuwa Kaila, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, citing what he described as incessant internal squabbles and factionalisation within the party.

In a letter dated October 6, 2025, addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman in Tsokuwa/Kofar Gabar Ward, Katagum Local Government Area of Bauchi State, Kaila said the deepening crisis in the party had hindered his ability to effectively discharge his duties as a lawmaker in the 10th Senate.

“The incessant internal squabble that has led to unnecessary factionalisation within the PDP is seriously affecting my ability to deliver on my constitutional responsibilities as an elected representative,” the letter partly read.

He explained that his decision to quit the party followed due consultation with his political associates, adding that he would be moving to another political platform soon.

“Accordingly, I hereby write to inform you of my decision to resign my membership of the PDP with immediate effect,” he stated.

The senator, however, did not disclose the political party he intends to join.

Kaila thanked the PDP for the opportunity to serve under its platform, expressing hope for future collaboration “for the benefit of our great country.”

Efforts to reach the lawmaker for further comments proved unsuccessful as calls and messages to his mobile phone were not returned as of press time.

Tinubu vows to sustain APC founding agreements as 64,000 defect to ruling party

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to uphold the agreements and power-sharing arrangements reached by the legacy parties—ANPP, ACN, CPC and others—which merged to form the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The President, represented by Yobe State governor, Mai Mala Buni, spoke in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital, while receiving over 64,000 defectors who joined the APC from opposition parties.

Tinubu assured that his administration would ensure justice, fairness and full inclusion for all blocs that formed the ruling party, while sustaining the party’s manifesto designed to address the needs of Nigerians in both rural and urban areas.

Buni said the Renewed Hope Agenda was already transforming the socio-economic landscape of the country through policies targeted at stabilising livelihoods and improving standards of living.

“You are all living witnesses that food prices have started coming down to a level the common man can afford. Government will continue to ensure the welfare of the people,” he said.

He added that the federal government would intensify support for farmers through the provision of inputs and implements to boost agricultural productivity.

The President also directed the speedy completion of the remaining sections of the Kano–Maiduguri highway without further delay.

Tinubu, through his representative, commended Jigawa State governor, Malam Umar Namadi, for his leadership style and people-oriented projects, which he said attracted mass defections from opposition parties.

He welcomed the new members and assured them of equal rights and privileges like every other party member.

In his remarks, APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwada, described the massive defection as a clear testimony that Jigawa is solidly for the APC.

“What we have seen and witnessed today proves that Jigawa belongs to APC and APC belongs to Jigawa. We are confident of winning all elective positions in 2027,” he said.

He congratulated the new members, saying, “You have returned home. Your decision is timely and commendable.”

Governor Umar Namadi also lauded President Tinubu for his exemplary leadership and commitment to equity across all parts of the country.

He presented the compiled list, political history and profiles of the defectors to the national chairman during the event.

Security operatives intercept $6.1m cash at Lagos airport

    • EFCC probes two suspects over undeclared foreign currency

Attempts by some individuals to board a flight with over $6.1 million in cash was foiled yesterday at the domestic wing of  of Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2  Lagos by vigilant airline and aviation security personnel.

Following the suspicious action of the individuals, who failed to declare the huge sums stashed in multiple boxes and taken to the foot of the aircraft without meeting the standard procedures, the money was intercepted and the individuals arrested by anti-graft agency personnel.

According to multiple airport sources, although the number of the suspects could not be established, the infractions were detected during routine checks while trying to board an Aero Contractors flight.

Airport sources hinted that the personnel had initially passed through airport security units before they were apprehended at the foot of the aircraft after Aero Contractors security noticed the heavy luggage.

The matter was then documented and was reported to Aviation Security, who later handed the individuals over to the Department of State Services.

Airport officials said the DSS later transferred the individuals to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, where they were being held for further investigation.

There were conflicting reports on the status of the individuals, who sources hinted claimed to be security agents escorting a suspect and exhibits, but failed to declare the cash or follow due procedures for transporting suspects on commercial flights.

The claim of the individuals suggesting that they are security personnel could have been exploited to breach initial security screening.

However, their activities raised suspicion at the boarding gate when AVSEC officers noticed the oversized boxes.

An official of Aero Contractors confirmed the incident, saying his airline’s security team grew suspicious after the individuals refused to check in their heavy bags.

The official explained that the bags contained money, and when asked if it had been declared, the suspects said no.

He explained: “What happened was that our security noticed some passengers trying to board our aircraft with bags that were quite heavy.

“Our security team advised them to check the bags in, as they could not be carried into the cabin.

“They refused to check the bags in, and later they said it was money.

“When asked if the money had been declared, they said no.

“At that point, our security personnel discovered that the individuals were either police officers or some form of security agents, who claimed they were escorting a suspect along with exhibits. That was why they resisted checking in the bags.

“We then informed them that if they were transporting a suspect, they were required to notify us in advance.

“There are standard procedures for moving suspects; we don’t mix them with regular passengers.

“There are boarding, deboarding, and in-flight protocols that must be followed in such cases. Since they failed to follow these procedures, they were not allowed to board, and they eventually left.”

Officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, and the terminal operator: Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited, were yet to comment on the development.

EFCC probes two suspects over undeclared foreign currency

In a related development, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Lagos Zonal Directorate 2, have commenced investigation into two travellers, Mamud Nasidi and Yahaya Nasidi, over alleged failure to declare foreign currencies in their possession at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

The suspects were apprehended yesterday by operatives of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) during a routine check.

According to preliminary findings, the duo was found with undeclared sums of $6,180 and £53,415.

The EFCC disclosed that the suspects had just arrived in Nigeria from Dubai via Addis Ababa and were scheduled to board a connecting flight to Abuja when they were intercepted.

Following their arrest, the travellers were initially handed over to operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) for profiling and further interrogation. The DSS subsequently transferred the suspects to the EFCC for in-depth investigation and possible prosecution.

Also recovered from the suspects were three mobile phones, which have been taken into custody as exhibits.

The suspects and the recovered items were received by CSE Margaret Lamai on behalf of the acting Zonal Director of the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2, Assistant Commander of the EFCC (ACE I) Ahmed Ghali.

    • Govt releases comprehensive list of 175 beneficiaries

The Presidency yesterday made public a comprehensive list of the beneficiaries of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s presidential pardon, clemency and commutation of sentences involving 175 convicts and former convicts, which was released after the National Council of State meeting on Thursday.

A statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, gave an exhaustive breakdown of the categories of the President’s prerogatives, comprising full pardons, posthumous pardons, clemency, sentence reductions and commutations from death to life imprisonment.

The exercise of mercy for the 175 convicts and former convicts, including military officers, public officials, remorseful drug offenders, illegal miners and foreigners, followed the recommendation of the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy chaired by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi.

The committee’s report, as presented by Fagbemi, recommended various forms of reprieve: pardon for 17 persons (including 11 posthumously), clemency for 82 inmates, commutation of sentences for 65, and conversion of death sentences to life imprisonment for seven others.

According to the statement by Mr Onanuga, President Tinubu granted mercy to many of the convicts for reasons including remorse, good conduct, old age, and enrolment in reform programmes such as the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).

The Presidency explained that the exercise covers a wide range of offences and circumstances—from narcotics and economic crimes to unlawful mining and homicide—and is intended to balance justice with compassion while acknowledging genuine efforts at reform.

It added that, beyond correcting individual cases, the exercise also addresses historic grievances such as the colonial conviction of Sir Herbert Macaulay and the 1995 executions in Ogoniland, even as the victims in that episode were formally honoured without being listed among the pardon or clemency beneficiaries.

How Maryam Sanda was convicted, sentenced to death for killing husband

After a judicial expedition that lasted almost three years, Ms Maryam Sanda was convicted in January 2020 for allegedly stabbing her husband to death after an argument between them degenerated into fisticuffs in November, 2017.

The deceased husband, Bilyaminu Bello, was the son of a former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Haliru Bello.

Although she claimed that her husband died from a wound he sustained on the chest from falling on a broken Shisha pot, a single or multi-stemmed device used to either smoke or vapourise flavoured tobacco, Justice Yusuf Halilu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court found her guilty of killing Bilyaminu and sentenced her to death by hanging.

The judge had said although the prosecution did not prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt as there was no other witness of the incident aside the accused and no autopsy or murder weapon tendered, the surrounding circumstances were compelling.

He said he also relied on the “Doctrine of the Last Scene” which stipulates that the last person at a crime scene bears full responsibility.

“Ms Sanda stabbed her husband with a kitchen knife with clear intent to kill,” said the judge in a two-count homicide charge brought by the Nigeria Police against her.

“It serves to buttress the finding that the defendant was the last to be seen with the deceased and therefore has full responsibility of what caused his death,” Halilu added.

Ms Sanda had burst into tears after the judgment, forcing her way out of the dock and screaming “Who will take care of my daughter?”

Presidency releases comprehensive list of 175 beneficiaries of Tinubu’s clemency, pardon

The Presidency on Saturday released a comprehensive list of the beneficiaries of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s presidential pardon, clemency and commutation of sentences to 175 convicts and former convicts, which was released on Thursday after the National Council of State meeting.

A statement by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, gave an exhaustive breakdown of the categories of the President’s prerogatives, comprising full pardons, posthumous pardons, clemency, sentence reductions and commutations from death to life imprisonment.

The exercise of mercy for the 175 convicts and former convicts, including military officers, public officials, remorseful drug offenders, illegal miners, and foreigners, followed the recommendation of the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy chaired by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi.

The committee’s report, as presented by Fagbemi, recommended various forms of reprieve: pardon for 17 persons (including 11 posthumously), clemency for 82 inmates, commutation of sentences for 65, and conversion of death sentences to life imprisonment for seven others.

According to the statement, President Tinubu granted mercy to many of the convicts for reasons including remorse, good conduct, old age, and enrolment in reform programmes such as the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).

Those granted full presidential pardon are Nweke Francis Chibueze, Dr. Nwogu Peters, Mrs. Anastasia Daniel Nwaoba, Barrister Hussaini Alhaji Umar, Ayinla Saadu Alanamu and Hon. Farouk M. Lawan.

PDP crashes in Enugu as Mbah, others join APC Tuesday

    • Gov, lawmakers, party executives exit party enmasse
    • Uncertainty over Suswam’s, ex-NAFDAC boss’ defection in Benue
    • PDP kicks, says govs being intimidated, coerced to defect
    • Put your house in order, we’re not architect of your woes – APC

All is set for the collapse of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State.

In a manner reminiscent of the defections that occurred in Delta and Cross River states earlier in the year, Governor Peter Mbah and all elected and appointive officers of the state are set to formally defect from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday next week.

The newly inaugurated Enugu State APC Caretaker Committee Chairman, Dr. Ben Nwoye, confirmed the development to newsmen at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja after taking the oath of office yesterday.

The bug of defection might also have bitten Benue State with strong rumour that former governor of the state Senator Gabriel Suswam and erstwhile boss of the National Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) Dr. Paul Orhii were set to defect from PDP to APC.

Nwoye said Governor Mbah, all his appointees and the entire state’s political structure would officially be received into the party on October 14.

He made the disclosure during a press briefing by the newly inaugurated Enugu State Caretaker Committee.

Describing Mbah’s defection as the dawn of a new political era for Enugu and the Southeast region, Nwoye said the governor’s coming into APC would be “a merger between transformation and renewed hope.”

“For the past 10 years, Enugu State has remained in opposition. But all that ends on Tuesday when Governor Peter Mbah declares for the APC. And he is not coming alone,” Nwoye said.

According to him, the defection will signal a “historic alignment” as Mbah will be joined by 260 councillors, 24 state lawmakers, National Assembly members, and the entire state executive council—an unprecedented political realignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Where Enugu goes, the Southeast goes. This marks the beginning of the Southeast’s political reawakening and full integration into national politics,” Nwoye said with a tone of confidence.

Commending the Governor Mbah’s performance in his last two years in office, Nwoye, who was the founding state chairman of the party, noted that his economic and infrastructural reforms had elevated the state to one of Nigeria’s top-performing states in internally generated revenue.

He added that the synergy between Mbah’s Transformation Agenda and President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Vision would accelerate development and economic growth across the Southeast.

APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, who inaugurated the seven-man caretaker committee for the party in the state, had earlier hinted of moves by the APC to strengthen its foothold in the Southeast.

The APC chairman charged the new Enugu leadership to consolidate the shock defection into a “lasting political conquest”

“APC is home for all. The person who came yesterday, today or tomorrow has equal rights.

“Our goal is simple: to expand, to win, and to deliver overwhelming victory in 2027,” Yilwatda said.

APC’s Deputy National Chairman (South), Emma Eneukwu, who is from the state, said the political development in the state marked the return of the Southeast region to national relevance.

“We will no longer play second fiddle. With Enugu in APC, the Southeast has found its voice again,” he declared.

Uncertainty over Suswam’s, ex-NAFDAC boss’ defection in Benue

There were strong rumours yesterday that Suswam, Orhii who currently serves as a member of the House of Representatives representing Agatu/Apa Federal constituency, Hon. Ojema Ojotu and former Benue North East Senator, Prof. David Iornem were set to join the APC in Benue State.

This was in spite of a statement issued by the media aide to Suswam dispelling the rumour that his boss had defected from PDP to the ruling party.

Banners and signposts announcing their official defection and pre-decamping dinner adorned major roads and streets in Makurdi, the state capital, yesterday.

It is the first time Suswam would defect to another party since joining politics in 1999.

The black cat, as the former governor is widely known first won an election to represent Katsina Ala, Logo and Ukum Federal Constituency in the House Representatives on the platform of the PDP.

After eight years in the House of Representatives, he was elected the governor of Benue State for another eight years also on the platform of PDP.

His first bid to go to the Senate, however, ended in a fiasco as he lost the election. He, however, made a second bid and won election into the Senate.

He had remained in PDP even after losing his re-election bid until yesterday when the news of his defection broke.

There was jubilation from Suswam’s massive camp of supporters yesterday on hearing that the former governor had defected to APC.

In Anyiin his country home and Ayilamo settlement, there was dancing and singing throughout the day, with shouts Dom Agya as Suswam is known in his ancestry home.

At press time yesterday, he was locked in a meeting with his supporters.

The Nation learnt that the meeting was meant to deliberate on the date for the defection ceremony.

But the media aide to Senator Suwswam, Bede Bartholomew, yesterday denied the claims that his boss had defected to APC.

Bartholomew however admitted that Governor Hyacinth Alia two days ago extended an invitation to Suwswam and other leaders for a banquet with him at Government House Makurdi.

A press statement he signed and made available to our correspondent yesterday reads: “Moments ago, I received telephone calls from well-meaning Benuelites and leaders alerting me to trending news on Benue’s social media space purporting that the former governor of Benue State, His Excellency Senator Gabriel Torwua Suswam,  is set to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) today and would be received by the Governor of Benue State, His Excellency Governor Hyacinth Alia, this evening at the Banquet Hall of the Benue State Government House.

“I debunk this unholy rumour with all vehemence as it doesn’t represent the current interests of Senator Gabriel Suswam or that of his supporters across the state and should be treated as a mere rumour and that’s all.

“What I know is that two days ago, the Governor of Benue State HE. Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia respectfully extended an invitation to Sen. Suswam, among other stakeholders, expressing his desire to attend a State Banquet slated for 10th October, 2025.

“It should be noted that as a former Governor of the State, Suswam is a stakeholder in the Benue project, thus his reason for accepting the invitation.

“There was no indication in the invitation letter that it was a political event or a decamping ceremony whatsoever.

“The former governor advises his supporters and well-wishers to disregard this rumour as it is baseless, aimless, and a lie from the deepest pit of hell.

“Suswam appreciates everyone who called in for further enquiries and concerns and wishes everyone a happy weekend ahead.

Defections: Blame no one for your woes, says APC as PDP kicks

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday took a swipe at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), accusing the opposition party of being responsible for its woes as more of its members are dumping it for the governing party.

This came on the heels of plans by the PDP governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, and the entire elective and appointive officers of the state to defect to APC on Tuesday.

The PDP had on Thursday blamed the wave of defections from the party on APC, accusing the ruling party of engaging in intimidation and coercion of its elected members.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Debo Ologunagba, while reacting to reports of the planned defection of some governors elected on the platform of the party to the APC, accused the ruling party for its misfortune.

“The APC is orchestrating all of this through intimidation, through coercion, through blackmail,” he said.

But APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, waved off the PDP allegation, insisting that the opposition party was only crying over a self-inflicted problem.

Dismissing the PDP allegation, Morka said: “The PDP continues to ridicule itself by the boring, repetitive and baseless claim that APC is, somehow, intimidating or cajoling its governors and other senior members to dump their wreck of a party.

“The PDP is the sole maker of its own political predicament. The party is only harvesting well-deserved adversity from decades of political recklessness, mindless corruption, ruthless desecration of democracy, disgraceful failure of leadership, and destructive impunity that characterised its existence.”

Justifying the defection to APC, Morka argued that “the governors and members that are dumping the party in their numbers are doing so in exercise of their free democratic will, and wisely so, to mitigate against the devastating fate that Nigerians will deal the party in the upcoming 2027 elections.”

    • Travellers stranded on Maiduguri-Damaturu highway after attack

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the killing of four soldiers in action in the insurgents’ attack on the Military Super Camp at Ngamdu along Damaturu Maiduguri highway.

In a statement released by the Media Information Officer Joint Task Force North East Operation HADIN KAI,  Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba and made available to journalists in Maiduguri, the army  said the insurgents were successfully repelled despite the heavy gunfire.

Though there were reports of eight soldiers paying the supreme price, the statement only confirmed four.

     The statement reads in full:

“Troops of Operation HADIN KAI successfully repelled a coordinated terrorist attack in the Ngamdu general area, following a swift response by forces on ground and reinforcement elements from 29 Task Force Brigade.

“The terrorists employed Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs), armed drones, and command-initiated Improvised Explosive Devices, targeting troops and own platforms. Despite the intensity of the attack, troops held their ground and responded with superior firepower, inflicting significant losses on the terrorists.

“Unfortunately, own troops recorded 4 x Killed in Action (KIA) and 5 x Wounded in Action (WIA). Additionally, some Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles and Gun Trucks (GTs) sustained varying degrees of damage during the encounter.

“The terrorists attempted to prevent reinforcements and inflict further casualties by planting multiple IEDs along the Ngamdu–Damaturu Main Supply Route (MSR). This necessitated a temporary closure of the MSR, as engineers swiftly responded to clear 3 IED-laden spots. Following successful clearance, the MSR has now been reopened to both military and civilian movement.

“In response to the attack, troops were immediately resupplied with critical logistics, including MRAP tyres and ammunition, to sustain operations and restore full mobility.

“Credible intelligence confirms heavy terrorist casualties, with reports indicating mass burials of about 15 bodies conveyed in pushcarts by the terrorists for burial around Bula Wura, near Wasaram.

“As part of continued efforts to dominate the area, 29 Task Force Brigade has launched fighting patrols and exploitation operations aimed at denying the terrorists freedom of action and consolidating operational gains.

“The gallantry and resilience of the troops have been commended and the public assured that normalcy would be sustained with operations ongoing to maintain peace and security in the area,” the statement reads.

Meanwhile, the attack on Thursday had a grinding experience on travellers along Maiduguri- Damaturu Kano road as the army blocked the highway for more than seven hours.

Hundreds of travellers got stranded on the highway from both Maiduguri and Damaturu as they set out to reach their destinations.

Some of the travellers, especially those going to long distances like Bauchi, Jos, Abuja, Kano etc had to return as they couldn’t be able to make it to their destinations in good time.

Those who insisted on travelling had to remain on the road until around 1.00pm when the road was opened but with strict checks causing unusual gridlock at different check-point along the way.

Mustapha Yaya, a master’s degree student at University of Maiduguri who was traveling from Damaturu to Maiduguri couldn’t catch up with his lectures which were to commence by 2.0pm.

“It’s almost 1pm now and we are still held at Benishik which is about 80km to Maiduguri. I am not sure  we will get out of this place in the next one hour because the road is blocked. I have missed out on my lectures today,” Mustapha informed.

A commercial driver, Abdullahi from Tasha Kano traveling to Abuja informed that he couldn’t proceed as all the passengers decided to call off their journey.

Checks revealed that until yesterday,  the Maiduguri-Damaturu-Kano Highway had never witnessed any insurgents attack for more than three years now.

Many travellers expressed fear over the incident and called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to secure the highway for them.

“This is the only safe route that we have to Maiduguri at the moment. We have enjoyed relative peace on this road but this has made us scared again. We called on the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to secure this road for travelers,” Abubakar, one of the travelers informed.

Court documents: Amupitan not part of 2023 presidential election dispute

Contrary to rumour being peddled on social media and sections of the society, court documents have revealed that the newly nominated Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan was never a member of the legal team of President Bola Tinubu at both the presidential election tribunal and the Supreme Court while the dispute over the 2023 presidential election lasted.

A search by The Nation through the lists of counsels’ appearances contained in the certified true copies (CTC) of the three judgments of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPC) and the two final judgments of the Supreme Court in the 2023 presidential election dispute did not reflect Prof Amupitan’s name.

Those peddling the rumour may have been unable to distinguish the name of Professor Taiwo Osipitan (SAN), who appeared with Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) along with others for Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima from that of Professor Joash Amupitan.

The PEPC rendered its consolidated judgment on September 6, 2023 on the three petitions that it fully considered.

    The three petitions were:

*Petition No: CA/PEPC/03/2023 was filed by Peter Obi and Labour Party (LP), with INEC, Tinubu, Shettima and APC as 1st, 2nd , 3rd & 4th respondents.

*Petition No: CA/PEPC/04/2023 was filed by Allied Peoples Movement (APM), with INEC, APC, Tinubu, Shettima and Kabir Masari listed as 1st to 5th respondents respectively.

New INEC chair not member of Tinubu’s legal team – Ogala

Erstwhile Coordinator of Tinubu Presidential Legal Team, Babatunde Ogala (SAN) has dismissed the rumour that the new INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN) was a member of Tinubu’s legal team as false and misleading claims.

Ogala, in a statement signed by him, asked the general public to disregard the ‘baseless’ claims.

His words: “My attention has been drawn to several false and misleading claims currently circulating on social media, alleging that Prof. Amupitan SAN recently appointed as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), was a member of the Tinubu Presidential Legal Team.

“As the erstwhile Coordinator of that legal team, I feel compelled, not as a rejoinder, but in service to truth and public interest, to set the records straight and allay any concerns these malicious fabrications may have caused among well-meaning Nigerians.”

For the avoidance of doubt, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria said  Prof. Amupitan SAN was never, at any point, a member of the Tinubu Presidential Legal Team. “His name does not appear among the over One Hundred and Twenty-three legal practitioners who were formally engaged for that assignment, of whom sixty (60) were distinguished Senior Advocates of Nigeria. At no time during the entire process was his counsel, opinion, or professional service sought or rendered.

“I therefore challenge anyone peddling this falsehood to produce verifiable evidence to the contrary. In fact, any member of the public may apply for Certified True Copies of all legal processes filed on behalf of the President-Elect (as he then was) to confirm the authenticity of this statement. While political discourse is inevitable in any democracy, it is essential that our engagement remains anchored on truth, decency, and national stability. Deliberately twisting facts to inflame public sentiment serves no one and only endangers our collective peace.”

He emphasized that Mr. President has lawfully exercised his constitutional prerogative in making this appointment and the Council of State has approved same. “It is therefore incumbent upon all responsible citizens, leaders, and media practitioners to reject narratives that are baseless, divisive, unkind, uncharitable and capable of undermining public trust.

“I reaffirm my unwavering commitment to justice, fairness, and the continued strengthening of our democratic institutions. Let truth, not mischief guide our national conversations. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

You can’t fail Nigerians, opposition lawmakers tell Amupitan

Nigeria’s opposition lawmakers’ coalition yesterday threw their weight behind the appointment of Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) admitting that his professional background will aide him to deliver on his assignment and not fail Nigerians

The National Council of State on Thursday approved the nomination of Prof. Amupitan, a serving Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos as the new Chairman of INEC to succeed Prof. Mahmood Yakubu who stepped down from the position on Tuesday.

Spokesperson of the coalition, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere urged Amupitan not to disappoint Nigerians, but prioritise their interests over political interests.

The statement reads in part, “For us as opposition coalition lawmakers, we welcome the appointment made by the President, appointing Amupitan as the new INEC Chairman because looking at his background in terms of academic excellence he comes highly recommended. He can’t fail, he has been a lecturer and a lawyer

“We have an INEC chairman that knows the difficulty in proving election petition, knows the loopholes etc. He has taught it in the classroom and practiced it in the field and now he’s going to execute it. He has no reason to fail. He has all the professional qualifications required to administer a successful INEC.

“We don’t have any history of his bad deed, if we do, we would have been among those who will say no to this appointment. We need to judge the man by his past standards, and those past standards are in his professional record.

“Let us allow him to transition into the position then we start watching his efforts, decisions as the day goes by. The election coming up in Anambra will be a test case to his capacity to handle INEC. Osun too.

“We believe he has reason to succeed and we also believe he has no reason to fail because he has the professional capacity. Those things he has experienced in the field, now he has the capacity to adjust those loopholes that’s unending. So we welcome his appointment and support him as long as he continues to administer INEC in compliance with the provisions of the law.”

INEC denies disobeying court order, clarifies position on AA leadership dispute

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has not breached any judgment of the Federal High Court which ordered it to recognise the Action Alliance’s (AA) executive elected on 7th October 2023 in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Oumekun said in a statement that the commission has fully complied with the order of court.

He said there was no order of court ordering the arrest of the immediate past chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu.

The statement reads: “Our attention has been drawn to some media reports making the rounds about an order made by the Federal High Court, Oshogbo, Osun State 11 days ago on 29th September 2025, for the arrest of the immediate past INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu for purportedly disobeying its judgement on a case involving the Action Alliance party (AA).

“But the misleading reports mischievously omitted the Commission’s subsequent action on the case, erroneously portrayed the matter involving a corporate entity, namely INEC, as an individual affair and gave the wrong impression that the Court gave a fresh order after the initial pronouncement made on 29th September.

“In line with its long-established tradition of always obeying court judgements and orders, the Commission on Monday 6th October 2025, which was still within the deadline, filed processes at the Federal High Court, Oshogbo to show that we had complied with its judgement and order of recognising the Action Alliance’s (AA) executive elected on 7th October 2023 at Abeokuta, Ogun State.

“The dashboard of the Commission’s web site showing compliance was tendered as evidence.

“However, when the judgement creditors filed a counter affidavit to complain that the Commission partially complied by listing the names of only four national executives without the National Chairman, Rufai Omoaje, the Commission responded by attaching the Notice of Appeal filed by the same Omoaje at the Supreme Court, challenging the judgement of the Court of Appeal sacking him as the National Chairman of the party.

“The judgement of the Court of Appeal is superior to that of the federal high court, hence, the Commission cannot list Omoaje’s name as the Chairman of the Action Alliance party when the judgement of the Appeal Court is still subsisting.

“We appeal to media organisations to fact-check their reports before publication to avoid misleading the public”.

Meanwhile, the Chief Technical Adviser to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Bolade Eyinla has explained why it isn’t feasible to strip the president of power to appoint the commission’s chairman as the 2027 general election approaches.

He disclosed this while speaking at the YIAGA Africa 2027 elections scenarios and election manipulation risk in red retreat in Abuja.

According to him, “any talk of reviewing the process of appointing the Chairman, National and Resident Electoral Commissioners of INEC by removing the power of appointment from the President under the prevailing circumstances is not feasible before the 2027 general election in view of the tedious process of altering any of the provisions in the Constitution.”

He explained that after a review of the 2023 general election, 142 recommendations were made for improving the electoral process, adding that the Commission has taken necessary steps to implement some of the recommendations arising from the review that requires administrative action.
