More than 60 wounded in Hezbollah drone attack on Israeli military site

Over 67 people have been wounded in a drone attack in northern Israel yesterday, according to Israeli emergency services and local media, as the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah said it had targeted an Israeli military camp with a “swarm” of drones.

At least four people were critically wounded in the attack in the town of Binyamina, south of Haifa.

According to Israel’s Channel 12, no warning sirens were heard before the attack.

Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the strike. In a statement, the Iran-aligned group said it launched a “swarm of drones” at a Golani Brigade camp.

The Golani Brigade is one of the five infantry brigades of the regular Israeli army and regarded as an elite unit.

In a separate statement, Hezbollah said it also targeted the Israeli Tsnobar logistics base in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights with a missile.

The Hezbollah drone strike comes on the same day that the United States announced it would send a new air-defence system to Israel to help bolster its protection against missile attacks.

At the direction of US President Joe Biden, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin “authorised the deployment of a Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery and associated crew of US military personnel to Israel to help bolster Israel’s air defenses following Iran’s unprecedented attacks against Israel on April 13 and again on October 1”, Pentagon press secretary Pat Ryder said in a statement.

Taiwan leader vows to resist China’s annexation plan

Taiwanese President, Lai Ching-te, in his first National Day address yesterday, vowed to resist any move towards annexation or encroachment by Beijing.

“The Republic of China (formal name of Taiwan) and the People’s Republic of China are not subordinate to each other,’’ Lai said.

Lai said this to a crowd attending the ceremony held on a square outside the presidential office in Taipei.

According to him, Taiwan has had an independent government since 1949, but China considered the self-ruled democracy to be part of its territory.

“On this land, democracy and freedom are growing and thriving. The People’s Republic of China has no right to represent Taiwan,’’ Lai said.

He added that as president, his mission is to ensure that the nation endures and progresses, and to unite the 23 million people of Taiwan.

“I will also uphold the commitment to resist annexation or encroachment upon our sovereignty.

“We hope that China will live up to the expectations of the international community.

“That it will apply its influence and work with other countries toward ending Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and conflicts in the Middle East,’’ Lai said.

He said that Taiwan was open to work with China to jointly tackle climate change, combat pandemics, and safeguard regional security, aiming for peaceful coexistence.

Lai vowed to further boost Taiwan’s resilience in four key areas to include national defence, economic livelihoods, disaster prevention, and democracy.

“As our society becomes better prepared, our nation grows more secure, and there is also greater peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait,” Lai added.

But, in a thinly-veiled reference to China’s claim over the island, Lai said he would “uphold the commitment to resist annexation or encroachment upon our sovereignty.”

At the same time, Lai promised to maintain “the status quo of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait” and pledged to cooperate with Beijing on issues such as climate change, combating infectious diseases and maintaining regional security.

Responding to Lai’s speech, a spokeswoman for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it “exposed his intransigent position” on Taiwan independence.

  • Behind China’s efficient evacuation: Great power responsibility, national strength

Behind China’s efficient evacuation: Great power responsibility, national strength

There’s a saying circulating on the Chinese internet: when China evacuates its citizens from a region, it’s a sign that war is really imminent. As the conflict between Israel and Lebanon intensifies, China has already organized two waves of evacuation efforts. Within just two or three days, over 200 Chinese citizens were successfully evacuated from Lebanon.

Moreover, this time China not only evacuated its citizens, including those from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, as well as a limited number of foreign nationals at the request of friendly countries, but it also allowed them to bring foreign family members. This reflects China’s responsibility as a major power and its humanitarian spirit.

Allowing citizens to evacuate with foreign family members is a practice that actually began after the Russia-Ukraine conflict erupted. Many Chinese men are known for their sense of responsibility and would never abandon their wives and children. So, after the conflict between Russia and Ukraine escalated, many Chinese people fled westward toward Europe with their foreign wives and children. Once the Chinese government became aware of this situation, it began allowing citizens to bring their family members during evacuations.

Behind China’s efficient and inclusive evacuation efforts is its strong sense of responsibility as a major power and its national strength. When regional conflicts escalate, the Chinese government actively contacts the parties involved in the conflict to exert pressure, demanding the safe evacuation of its citizens. It allocates manpower, resources, and funds to charter planes to conflict zones to bring citizens to safety. Through concrete actions, China shows its citizens that their safety and rights are protected by a powerful nation.

In stark contrast to China’s efficiency and responsibility is the approach of some Western countries. For example, the U.S., which often criticizes other countries on issues of “democracy” and “human rights,” not only asked Americans in Lebanon to buy their own tickets to leave but also offered loan services to those who couldn’t afford the fare.

Although there are indeed many Americans in Lebanon—about 80,000—the U.S. government’s lackluster attitude toward evacuation has left many of its citizens feeling disheartened. No wonder an American commented under related news articles: “So it’s not enough to kill Lebanese citizens with our tax dollars, now we’re killing Americans too?”

This contrast illustrates the difference in how various countries treat their citizens. China’s evacuation efforts not only reassure every Chinese citizen that their country is a strong backing but also sends a message to every country friendly with China: China has the strength to help its friends out of danger.

For many Third World countries, this serves as a lesson: maintaining good relations with China can often bring unexpected benefits.

Recalling that agriculture is a major thematic area in the partnership, the DG expressed his quest for the partnership with China to also focus on transforming Nigeria’s agricultural practices by deploying new, cost-effective technology and sustainable farming techniques to enhance the productivity and livelihood of farmers and ensure food is available and affordable within the country.

  • Cameroon’s 91-year-old Biya in good health, says govt

Cameroon’s 91-year-old Biya in good health, says govt

Cameroon’s 91-year-old President, Paul Biya, is in good health, the government said yesterday in a statement, calling widespread reports saying otherwise “pure fantasy.”

Biya has not been seen in public since attending a China-Africa forum in Beijing in early September.

His failure to appear as scheduled at a summit in France last weekend stoked speculation that the nonagenarian was unwell.

“Rumours of all kinds have been circulating through the conventional media and social networks about the president’s condition,” government spokesperson Rene Sadi said in the statement.

“The government unequivocally states that these rumours are pure fantasy … and hereby issues a formal denial.”

It’s not completely certain who will win this election.

Opposition parties and civil society groups have been calling for an update on the status of Biya’s health and his exact whereabouts.

After Beijing, Biya paid a private visit to Europe, Sadi said. “The head of state is in good health and will be returning to Cameroon in the coming days.”

With no clear succession plan, Biya’s death would bring more political turmoil to West and Central Africa, which has seen eight coups since 2020 and several other military attempts to overthrow governments.

His recent absence from the meeting of leaders from French-speaking countries in Paris was much remarked on at the two-day event, according to three non-Cameroonian African ministers who attended.

“He’s over 90, he hasn’t been involved in day-to-day business for a long time, but if he dies, the situation is likely to get out of hand,” said one of the ministers, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“No one has prepared for the aftermath. We don’t know what Cameroon (would) be like without Paul Biya.”

Cocoa and oil-producing Cameroon, which has had just two presidents since independence from France and Britain in the early 1960s, is in the grips of a secessionist war that has killed thousands and a violent Boko Haram insurgency in the north.

The Senate President described the visit as a “major milestone” stressing that it would further consolidate the bond between the two countries.

Akpabio told his guests: “There are many areas of cooperation, such as the burning issue of climate change which Nigeria is one of those greatly affected today.

“The world today is engulfed in conflicts… Nigeria plays a very pivotal role in the stability of the region.

Earlier, Ambassador Kim Pankyu said his visit was to further consolidate the bilateral relations between Nigeria and his country.

He noted that economic exchange had been the  pillar of bilateral relations between the two countries since the establishment of diplomatic relations.

“I believe the potential for economic cooperation right now is greater than ever.

“The Korean government is trying to deepen its relationship with African countries as you can see from the Korean-African summit held last June.

“At the same time, President Bola Tinubu is implementing various policies to improve business environment in Nigeria and attract foreign investment.

“I believe this factor will lead to more Korean companies venturing into Nigeria and increase in bilateral trade,” the Korean Ambassador said.

  • Dozens of States in U.S. sue TikTok for harming children’s mental health

Dozens of States in U.S. sue TikTok for harming children’s mental health

More than a dozen states in the United States and the District of Columbia have filed lawsuits against TikTok, alleging the popular short-form video app is harming youth mental health by designing its platform to be addictive to kids.

The lawsuits stem from a national investigation into TikTok, which was launched in March 2022 by a bipartisan coalition of attorneys general from many states, including New York, California, Kentucky and New Jersey. All of the complaints were filed in state courts.

At the heart of each lawsuit is the TikTok algorithm, which powers what users see on the platform by populating the app’s main “For You” feed with content tailored to people’s interests.

The lawsuits also emphasise design features that they say make children addicted to the platform, such as the ability to scroll endlessly through content, push notifications that come with built-in “buzzes” and face filters that create unattainable appearances for users.

In its filings, the District of Columbia called the algorithm “dopamine-inducing,” and said it was created to be intentionally addictive so the company could trap many young users into excessive use and keep them on its app for hours on end. TikTok does this despite knowing that these behaviors will lead to “profound psychological and physiological harms,” such as anxiety, depression, body dysmorphia and other long-lasting problems, the complaint said.

“It is profiting off the fact that it’s addicting young people to its platform,” District of Columbia Attorney General Brian Schwalb said in an interview.

“We strongly disagree with these claims, many of which we believe to be inaccurate and misleading. We’re proud of and remain deeply committed to the work we’ve done to protect teens and we will continue to update and improve our product,” said TikTok spokesman Alex Haurek in a reply to the lawsuits. “We’ve endeavored to work with the Attorneys General for over two years, and it is incredibly disappointing they have taken this step rather than work with us on constructive solutions to industry wide challenges.”

The social media firm does not allow children under 13 to sign up for its main service and restricts some content for everyone under 18.

But, Washington and several other states said in their filing that children can easily bypass those restrictions, allowing them to access the service adults use despite the company’s claims that its platform is safe for children.

“TikTok claims that is safe for young people, but that is far from true. In New York and across the country, young people have died or gotten injured doing dangerous TikTok challenges and many more are feeling more sad, anxious, and depressed because of TikTok’s addictive features,” New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement.

Their lawsuit also takes aim at other parts of the company’s business.

The district alleges TikTok is operating as an “unlicensed virtual economy” by allowing people to purchase TikTok Coins – a virtual currency within the platform – and send “Gifts” to streamers on TikTok LIVE who can cash it out for real money.

TikTok takes a 50% commission on these financial transactions but hasn’t registered as a money transmitter with the US Treasury Department or authorities in the district, according to the complaint.

Officials say teens are frequently exploited for sexually explicit content through TikTok’s LIVE streaming feature, which has allowed the app to operate essentially as a “virtual strip club” without any age restrictions.

They say the cut the company gets from the financial transactions allows it to profit from exploitation.

Biden, Israeli leaders, others mark October 7 attack on Israel

Global commemorations were held yesterday to mark the first anniversary of Hamas’ deadly October 7 attack on Israel.

Israel’s President Isaac Herzog kicked off the event with memorials held to honour the victims and the hostages still in captivity in Gaza.

Herzog began the day with a moment of silence at 6.29am – the time the attack began – at Kibbutz Reim, the site of the Nova music festival, where at least 370 people were killed by heavily armed Hamas fighters on October 7.

Families of those killed attended the memorial, many of them crying, as Herzog met the crowd, an AFP correspondent reported.

President Joe Biden also marked the event in a small White House ceremony accompanied by a prayer and a memorial candle.

Biden stood in the Blue Room of the White House alongside First Lady Jill Biden and Rabbi Aaron Alexander, the head rabbi at Washington’s Adas Israel Congregation, as Alexander offered a prayer in both Hebrew and English.

The somber ceremony was to remember the 1,200 killed and 250 hostages taken when Hamas militants invaded Israel. The attack sparked a conflict in the area that continues to grow.

The prayer, known as “El Malei Rachamim” — or “God of Mercy” in English — is a prayer for the soul of a person who has died that is recited during burial and memorial services.

After Alexander finished the prayer, Biden lit a Yahrzeit candle, a memorial candle that is lit on the anniversary of a person’s death, at which point the ceremony ended with a moment of silence.

Also, United States has spent at least $17.9 billion (£14bn) on military aid to Israel since the war in Gaza began, a record, according to a report for Brown University’s Costs of War project, released yesterday.
