Gunfire heard in DRC’s biggest prison after attempted jail break

Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) government has commenced inquiries after an attempted jailbreak overnight from the country’s biggest prison.

Heavy gunfire rang out early yesterday morning from Makala central prison in the capital, Kinshasa, as inmates tried to break out from the overcrowded facility, authorities said.

Government spokesman Patrick Muyaya confirmed on X that there was an “an attempted escape”, adding that security forces now had the situation under control.

Reporting from Goma, Al Jazeera stated that at least two people were killed in the incident.

“However, the pictures coming from the central jail of Makala show what local media already calls a carnage, but we cannot confirm the number of causalities,” the TV station said.

Local media reports said dozens of bodies were taken away from the prison.

Daddi Soso, an electrician in his 40s who lives in the area, told the AFP news agency that he woke up during the night to the sound of gunfire.

“There were gunshots from 1 or 2am in the morning, and until around 5am,” Soso said, visibly shaken.

“There were deaths and there are people who fled,” he said, adding he saw law enforcement vehicles transporting bodies.

Makala prison, whose capacity is for 1,500 prisoners, holds between 14,000 and 15,000 detainees, according to official figures.

  • Group decries UK’s conviction of four Nigerians over fake marriage certificates

Group decries UK’s conviction of four Nigerians over fake marriage certificates

    …says it’s injustice, racism

The Centre for Social Justice Advocacy, (CSJA), a non-novernmental Organisation, has decried the conviction of four Nigerian citizens for fake marriage certificates to enable them live in the UK illegally.

It was reported that Abraham Alade Olarotimi Onifade, 41, Abayomi Aderinsoye Shodipo, 38, Nosimot Mojisola Gbadamosi, 31, and Adekunle Kabir, 54, were all convicted and sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court on Tuesday.

They were sentenced to a total of 13 years in prison after being convicted of involvement in over 2,000 fake marriage certificates to support the applications of Nigerian citizens seeking to remain in the UK under the EU Settlement Scheme.

CSJA in a statement released by its Executive Director, Gbenga Awosika, said the process that led to the sentences of the Nigerians were flawed and smacks of racism and injustice.

The statement read: “In the last two years, we followed the investigation of over 2000 Nigerians living in the UK for allegation of forging marriage certificates from Nigeria and received the news of the convictions of four of them who have faced prosecution with sadness.

“Our sadness arose from the fact that the trial had all the trappings of racism, injustice and racial prejudice.

“There are several gaps in the process that led to the judgments, chiefs among them was the fact that the prime suspect, Abraham Alade Olarotimi Onifade was denied his right to a lawyer of his choice, and made to use the same lawyer he met at the police station for two years despite his application to change his counsel.

“The grounds of conviction that they forged Nigerian marriage certificates is totally flawed.

“Firstly it’s not in the place of British government to determine whether a Nigerian document is forged since they are not the issuing authority.

It further stated: “Secondly, no Nigerian government official appeared before the Woolwich Crown Court to deny the authencity of the documents.

“It is pertinent to add that an expert witness for the prosecutor told the court that  the certificates are genuine.

“Even the jury declared that two of the marriages were real while another defendant, Mr. Adekunle Kabir, was cleared of the charge of providing forged marriage certificates.

“In fact the chief investigator admitted under cross-examination that no one in Nigeria ever told him the certificates were forged but he just had ‘suspicion’ that they are not authentic.

“From the facts available to us, what we made of the court’s decision is that it was predetermined to embarass the entire Nigerian community in the UK and tar the entire Nigerians with the brush of forgers.”

Awosika said the civil society organisation was aware that the criminal convictions were being appealed, adding that many things pertaining to the issue would be unfolded as time goes on.

It was gathered that the Home Office, in a joint investigation with its international operations based in Lagos, Nigeria uncovered more than 2,000 false marriage documents.

Onifade and Shodipo were both found guilty of conspiracy to facilitate illegal entry into the UK and conspiracy to provide articles used in fraud.

Gbadamosi was convicted of obtaining leave to remain by deception and fraud by false representation, while Kabir was found guilty of possession of an identity document with improper intention but was cleared of obtaining leave to remain by deception.

Onifade from Gravesend, was sentenced to six years imprisonment while Shodipo, from Manchester, was jailed for five years at the same court on Tuesday.

Gbadamosi, from Bolton, was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment while Kabir, from London, was jailed for nine months.

Home Office chief immigration officer Paul Moran, hailed the convictions as a significant victory, warning that gangs that exploit vulnerable individuals for financial gain will be brought to justice.

Moran said: “This group was absolutely prolific in their desire to abuse our borders and have rightly been brought to justice.

“As with many gangs we encounter, their sole priority was financial gain. I am delighted that my team was able to intercept their operation, and I hope these convictions will serve as a warning to unscrupulous gangs who exploit people’s desperation to remain in the UK.

“We will continue to work tirelessly to secure our borders and clamp down on the gangs who prey on vulnerable people to make money,” he said.

  • FOCAC: What Tinubu should do in China, by Mbisiogu, ex-NIDO boss

FOCAC: What Tinubu should do in China, by Mbisiogu, ex-NIDO boss

As President Bola Tinubu prepares to attend the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in China, Mr. Festus Mbisiogu, a former coordinator of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDO) in Guangdong Province, has called on him to prioritize trade, investment, and the welfare of Nigerians residing in China during his discussions.

He said this is essential for fostering a mutually beneficial relationship between the two countries.

He also identified other areas that require the president’s attention including education, employment, and plight of Nigerians detained for suspected offences.

Mbisiogu, who briefed newsmen in Lagos ahead of the visit, said it is important the president discusses these key issues considering how strategic China is to Nigeria’s efforts at developing its infrastructure and growing its economy.

He further commended the Chinese authorities for providing conducive atmosphere for Nigerians citizens residents in China to do their business.

The Board of Trustees, BoT, member of NIDO in China, however, urged President Tinubu to plead with Chinese authorities to allow Nigerians who attended school in China to secure employment and remain after their studies.

He specified that Chinese authorities have ensured that there are no immigration issues with Nigerians living or visiting the country.

He explained that Nigeria isn’t recognised as an English-speaking nation in China unlike Kenya and South Africa, noting that such a situation should be addressed.

He said: “Our president’s visit to China is coming at a very auspicious time given the efforts of the Tinubu administration in fixing the economy. However, as stakeholder, may I bring some key areas the President should also consider in his engagements during the visit.

“A lot of Nigerians are schooling in China and some wish to remain and work in the country after their studies. So, they want the President to help out this area so they can realise their dreams in the country. Another issue of note is that countries like South Africa and Kenya are categorized as English-speaking countries while Nigeria didn’t make that category.

“This hasn’t helped Nigerians in any way, so our people are pleading that Nigeria is included in its rightful place. We are an English-speaking nation.

“Another issue that Nigerians in China need the President’s intervention is the aspect of Nigerians who are detained for several offences in China. We learnt that about 1000 Nigerians are languishing in Guangdong Province alone. They are pleading with Nigerian authorities to help look into their cases.

“They should reach out to them through the Consulate Office. Most of them do not have anyone to speak for them. Their hope is on Nigerian government.

“Nigerian Union in China  also wants the President to help out in trade disputes with Chinese businessmen.

“Many Nigerian businessmen have lost millions of dollars to trade disputes. So, they are pleading that an abeteration panel be set up to settle such issues arising from business transactions between Nigerian importers and Chinese business. I must also commend the Chinese authorities for ensuring there are no immigration challenges with Nigerians.

“They have done well and deserve to be commended. The President should use this opportunity to discuss about all issues that relate to Nigerians in the country among other issues that are beneficial to both nations.”

President Bola Tinubu has urged new Brazilian Ambassador to Nigeria, Carlos Areias, to prioritise establishment of direct flights with Nigeria.

Receiving his Letter of Credence, Tinubu reiterated his discussion with President Luiz da Silva in February, on the margins of African Union Summit, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

A statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, said the President expressed Nigeria’s commitment to working with Brazil to advance shared priorities, welcoming the country’s presidency of G20.

‘’We have an history of bilateral and cultural relations with Brazil. You must see Nigeria as your second home and explore the abundant economic opportunities.

‘’I have been talking to some of my Brazilian friends concerning the prospects of investing in dairy farming in Nigeria. We are eager to push these investments.

‘’In my discussions with President Lula, we agreed to energise our economic development, and I look forward to continuing that collaboration,’’ the President said.

Areias said Lula is looking forward to welcoming Tinubu to G20 Leaders’ Summit on November 18 and 19, in Rio de Janeiro.

He conveyed Lula’s invitation to Nigeria to join the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, saying it is the main proposal of Brazilian presidency at G20 to eliminate extreme poverty by 2030.

‘’I am in a country similar to Brazil, and I feel at home with the culture, music, and people.

‘’I will improve Brazil-Nigeria relations. Ten years ago, the volume of trade between our us was in the region of $10 billion, and I will work to improve the number.

‘’Africa is top priority for Lula and Nigeria is the most important country for us,’’ he said.

President Tinubu also received the Letter of Credence from Ghana’s High Commissioner in Nigeria, Vice-Admiral Seth Amoama.

Tinubu lauded Ghana’s participation in ECOWAS and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening relations with it.

‘’You must feel at home in Nigeria. Our doors are open and I wish you a pleasant stay,’’ the President told the high commissioner and former chief of the Defence Staff of Ghana, an alumnus of University of Ibadan and fellow of National Defence College, Abuja.

Amoama expressed Ghana’s support to Nigeria’s leadership of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

‘’We will continue to support the leadership of Tinubu,’’ he said.

Tuggar woos investors as 20 get German scholarship

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has called on foreign investors to invest in Nigeria, saying it has enormous investment opportunities for them.

This is contained in a statement by Special Assistant to the minister on Media and Communications Strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir, yesterday in Abuja.

Abdulkadir said Tuggar spoke in Germany, at an event to celebrate  scholarship to 20 Nigerians to study at European School of Management and Technology (ESMT), Berlin.

He said the minister reiterated achievements made by President Tinubu to reposition Nigeria and create an economic haven for foreign investors.

Tuggar enumerated the administration’s efforts in this regard to include embarking on microeconomic reforms, removal of subsidy on PMS and unifying the currency exchange rate.

“There is the need for the Global North to invest in infrastructure and not dwell on geopolitical considerations,” he said.

“The scholarship programme was announced at a special dinner organised by Lars Windhorst, a German entrepreneur and co-founder of Sapinda Group and owner of fashion company, La Perla, in Berlin.

  • France’s Macron hosts Starmer as UK aims to rebuild European relations

France’s Macron hosts Starmer as UK aims to rebuild European relations

UK premier Keir Starmer was welcomed warmly Thursday in Paris by French leader Emmanuel Macron, as the new centre-left British government seeks to relaunch post-Brexit ties with Europe.

Paris is the second leg of Starmer’s trip to key EU capitals, after the prime minister visited Berlin and announced treaty talks alongside Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Macron strode out to meet Starmer for a demonstrative hug, slapping the recently-elected leader’s back and shaking his hand.

French presidents usually wait beside uniformed Republican Guards standing rigidly to attention at the top of the steps in the presidential palace’s courtyard when welcoming visitors.

The pair have plenty to discuss.

Like Germany, France is a key security partner for Britain — Paris and London hold permanent seats on the UN Security Council and are Western Europe’s only nuclear-armed powers.

The two countries share strong support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian invasion since 2022.

More fraught is the issue of migrants crossing the Channel to the UK on boats, which the two countries’ security forces have cooperated for years to try to contain.

The issue was the first aim singled out by Starmer in a statement released ahead of the France visit, alongside stoking economic growth.

Migrant arrivals in Britain reached a record high in the first six months of the year, according to London, adding 18 percent year-on-year to reach 13,500 people.

Since the beginning of the year, 25 people have died in often dangerously-overcrowded craft, twice as many as in the whole of 2023.

Reaching a new level of cooperation with the EU as a whole may be more elusive than the treaty Starmer hopes to strike with Germany by year’s end.

He has made a classic choice of interlocutors in Scholz and Macron as the heads of the EU’s traditional Franco-German power couple.

But both are in a weakened state that may limit their influence on cross-Channel dealmaking.

Scholz heads a shaky three-party coalition set for a drubbing in three regional elections next month and unlikely to survive next year’s national ballot.

Macron is struggling to come up with a candidate for prime minister after a July snap election produced a hopelessly hung parliament — a stark contrast to Starmer’s unassailable majority.

Since the beginning of 2022, North Korea has significantly increased the scope of its weapons tests, including the testing of nuclear-capable missiles.

They have stepped up their rhetoric against the US and South Korea, which Pyongyang considers to be enemy states. It has also intensified its military cooperation with Russia.

On Tuesday, a South Korean lawmaker, citing an intelligence report, said North Korea may have sent more than 13,000 shipping containers of arms to Russia since mid-2022.
