JD Vance praises Trump, vows to fight for working class if elected

James David Vance, Donald Trump’s vice presidential running mate, yesterday at the Republican National Convention showered Trump with praises over his handling of the failed assassination attempt against him.

“He can stand defiant against an assassin one moment and call for national healing the next.

“He is a beloved father and grandfather,” Vance told the crowd in what was his first speech after being officially nominated the Republican’s vice presidential candidate.

“They said he was a tyrant. They said he must be stopped at all costs. But how did he respond?

“He called for national unity, for national calm, literally, right after an assassin nearly took his life,” Vance said of Trump.

Vance, a senator from Ohio 40 years younger than Trump, is a rising star within the Republican Party; he is a veteran of the Iraq War, a Yale-educated lawyer and former venture capitalist.

At the beginning of his speech, the 39-year-old officially accepted his nomination as Trump’s running mate for the Nov. 5, election.

Vance was not always a loyal Trump ally once even going so far as to call himself “a Never Trump guy.”

When he was promoting his bestselling 2016 memoir “Hillbilly Elegy” on poverty and drug addiction that afflicts poor white communities where he came from in Middletown Ohio, Vance wrote a blistering essay describing Trump as cultural heroin and a new pain reliever.

“I think that he’s noxious and is leading the white working class to a very dark place,” he said in a separate interview that same year.

Vance later renounced his criticism and, with Trump’s support, won the race for a U.S. Senate seat from Ohio in 2022.

Also yesterday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov praised Vance over his stance on the war in Ukraine.

The war was launched by Moscow more than two years ago.

Vance, a senator from Ohio, was in favour of peace and an end to military aid for Ukraine, Lavrov said at the UN in New York yesterday.

  • Expert urges Nigeria to adopt tobacco harm reduction from Sweden, Japan

Expert urges Nigeria to adopt tobacco harm reduction from Sweden, Japan

Nigeria has been advised to adopt Tobacco Harm Reduction (THR) strategies to combat tobacco-related diseases, which cause over 30,000 deaths annually.

This recommendation was contained in BAT West & Central Africa’s Scientific Engagement Manager for New Category Products, Dr. Akinwande Puddicombe’s report, “Harnessing Tobacco Harm Reduction: Lessons from Sweden and Japan for a Healthier Nigeria,” highlighting the potential benefits of these strategies in alleviating the nation’s health crisis.

Puddicombe emphasises the success of Sweden and Japan in implementing THR, offering valuable lessons for Nigeria. In Sweden, the introduction of Snus, a smokeless tobacco product, has led to a significant public health triumph.

“Today, over 20 percent of Swedish men use Snus, and smoking rates have plummeted,” Puddicombe notes. He explained that this shift has resulted in a dramatic reduction in tobacco-related deaths, with estimates suggesting a 50 percent decrease.

Similarly, he mentioned Japan has embraced heated tobacco products (HTPs), which heat rather than burn tobacco, thereby reducing the production of harmful chemicals.

“Over 10 percent of Japanese smokers switched to HTPs within a few years,” Puddicombe stated, citing a study by the Japanese Ministry of Health that found HTPs reduced smoking-related biomarkers by up to 90 percent.”

The core principle of THR, according to the expert, is providing smokers with safer alternatives to reduce their exposure to harmful tobacco by-products. Traditional cigarettes release thousands of dangerous chemicals when burned, leading to smoking-related diseases. In contrast, reduced-risk products like Snus, HTPs, e-cigarettes also known as ‘Vapes’, and oral nicotine pouches offer significant health benefits. Research indicates that Snus can cut the incidence of smoking-related diseases by 90 percent, while HTPs and e-cigarettes, significantly reduce harmful chemical exposure.

“By switching to reduced-risk products, smokers can significantly reduce their risk of smoking-related diseases, such as lung cancer, heart disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD),” Puddicombe asserts. Additionally, these products can increase quit rates by up to 50 percent and eliminate second-hand smoke, protecting non-smokers from harmful exposure.

In Nigeria, Dr. Puddicombe notes that the burden of tobacco-related diseases strains the healthcare system and impacts the well-being of its citizens. He emphasizes that embracing THR can significantly reduce this burden.

“The introduction of safer alternatives, such as e-cigarettes and HTPs, could provide Nigerian smokers with viable options to reduce their health risks,” he said.

To achieve this, Dr. Puddicombe stresses the importance of education and awareness campaigns, as well as the need for policymakers to create a supportive regulatory environment that encourages the adoption of reduced-risk products while ensuring their safety and efficacy.

“Tobacco harm reduction is not a silver bullet, but it is a powerful tool in the fight against tobacco-related harm,” he insisted.

“By providing smokers with safer alternatives, we can reduce smoking-related diseases and deaths, improve public health, and protect non-smokers from second-hand smoke exposure. It’s time for policymakers, healthcare professionals, and the general public to recognise the potential of THR and work towards a safer future.

“The success stories from Sweden and Japan demonstrate that THR can lead to significant public health improvements. By learning from these examples and implementing THR strategies tailored to local needs, countries like Nigeria can make substantial progress in reducing the harm caused by tobacco. Let us join forces to create a world where tobacco-related harm is a thing of the past, and where safer alternatives pave the way for a healthier future,” Dr. Puddicombe added.

First Lady’s garden farming initiative excites U.S lawyer Salis

U.S.-based lawyer Owolabi Salis has praised First Lady Remi Tinubu for her recently unveiled Smart Garden Initiative.

The Ikorodu-born lawyer described the initiative as a significant step with the potential to transform the agricultural sector from its current rudimentary state to a highly productive one, achieving national self-sufficiency if managed with sustained and intensified effort.

He said: “The initiative came very close to the content of my manifesto on Agriculture which I repeatedly harped upon during my three-time campaigns for governorship spanning 2007 to 2019, variously on the platforms of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Alliance for Democracy (AD).

“In those periods, my team and I worked out an operational methodology to ensure that every available arable land in Lagos State was converted to agricultural usage as part of a comprehensive blue-print drawn towards the crucial goal of agricultural self-sufficiency, in accordance with the advice which I had called on successive governments before then, and even up till now, to heed in other to save the people especially the poor, from the throes of starvation.”

The widely acclaimed social critic and reformer also took the opportunity to commend Chief Afe Babalola, the founder and proprietor of Afe Babalola University in Ado-Ekiti.

At a recent university event, which coincided with the unveiling of the First Lady’s Smart Garden Initiative, Babalola mentioned that he often sources his food, including meats, from his own farm and refrains from purchasing food externally.

“Indeed this epic revelation by Chief Babalola is an exemplary action that Commends itself for emulation by us all because this is a man, who has all the financial resources in this world to afford whatever he desires, yet he jettisoned that option and rather decided to show us a worthy example in self-sufficiency”, said the High Chief, who also gave a high thumbs-up for the nation’s First Lady, Mrs.Tinubu, for not only preaching but leading by example.

“This move by our distinguished First Lady is indeed unprecedented in the annals of First Ladyship in this nation. It really shows that she cares, and not only that she cares and has the motherly empathy to feel for the poor, but she also strives in her own way to contribute her own quota towards ameliorating their plight, as we can all see during the unveiling of her Smart Garden Initiative. She could have reclined in the cosy comfort of her presidential residence, but rather chose not to do so, touched by the severe plight of the people, especially the poor”, said Salis.

Popularly known as Oba Mekunu (King of the poor in Lagos and New York) because of his philanthropic propensity for the poor, Salis described the initiative as properly conceptualized and well thought out.

“The crops like Ewedu, Okro, among others, which the First Lady started with are not only the common staples, they are also highly nutritious and medicinal as well. Moreover, the competitive spirit with which she kick-started it with N25million to be won will go a long way to excite popular interest”, he stated.

Salis was happy that First Ladies in the States were not only imbibing the idea but doing so with remarkably impressive zeal.

He also advocated the need for the First Lady to evolve a more enduring and effective mechanism to harmonize and integrate the states and the local governments, coupled with the effective participation of the Ministry of Agriculture, in a collaborative synergy aimed at elevating the scheme to a formidable mechanism to lift the frontiers of agricultural production to remarkably phenomenal heights.

“Virtually everything can be grown in your backyard including Yam tubers, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, and so on. You can even grow them in the bucket, remarked the social critic and reformer.

“As a compulsive global traveller, over the years, I have travelled to a greater part of the world, like the Middle East, Europe, the Caribbean, Antarctica, and the Arctic North Pole regions of the world, including the U.S. where I’m based. My travel to the North Pole early this year, through Krasnoyarsk, to Khatanga and Borneo, all in Russia, was aborted by a runway collapse in Borneo. I am often impressed to note that in most of these places, a greater part of the landmass is dotted with Garden Farms.

“In other words, almost all families in these countries, compulsively have a garden farm. The First Lady should bring her influence to bear, in putting in motion, innovative processes geared to promoting it as an abiding aspect of our productive culture, culminating for the vast body of populace, in optimum beneficial advantage in agricultural self-sufficiency.

“Remember that the Obasanjo regime earlier undertook a similar ambitious initiative sometime in the late 70s, officially known as Operation Feed the Nation, unfortunately, the initiative simply died a natural death, for lack of continuity. This is an aspect where we should all learn to avoid the pitfall of the past, and therefore strive towards continuous innovative measures and ideas aimed at driving the evolutionary processes towards its optimum perfection.”

“I will also advise that this potentially utilitarian initiative be re-inforced with an effective publicity leverage, through the various mass media, like Radio, TV, and Newspapers.” “Publicity posters, jingles and slogans should be coined to enhance a new orientation and awareness for collective involvement in agriculture, while musicians should be hired to wax records, in reinforcement of the publicity drive, just as lots of musicians like Ebenezer Obey, Ayinla Omowura among others, did in their records waxed in the late 70s, in which they espoused the immense values latent in Operation Feed The Nation” Salis advised.

He, however, called on the generality of Nigerians, and not only housewives, to take a cue from the initiative, adding that the food crises currently pervading the nation, have attained such an emergency that only an emergency solution could stave off the impending danger.

The emergency solution, according to him, “calls for all hands to be on the deck in other to save the nation from a steady heady plunge into the pit of starvation because only a collective effort on the part of the citizens could save us.

“We will only be living in a fool’s paradise if we fold our arms and expect the government to start feeding all of us.

“From the look of things, as it is presently, this is practically not feasible, not even shortly. This is why it becomes urgent and necessary for us all, to strive and save ourselves by going all imaginable lengths to use our own hands to feed ourselves”, he added.

Practitioners defend Tuggar over non-appointment of Ambassadors

The International Relations and Affairs Alliance (IRAA) has clarified that the appointment of ambassadors is the prerogative of the President, not the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar as some have mistakenly claimed.

The IRAA responded to accusations made by the Coalition of Civil Society Groups, led by Igwe Ude-Umanta, which incorrectly blamed Tuggar for recalling ambassadors and not appointing new ones.

IRAA, led by Mrs. Adewusi Bakare, criticised the group’s lack of understanding of diplomatic processes.

Bakare said: “The recall and appointment of ambassadors lie solely with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The group has shown zero knowledge of the process and is serving the bidding of their paymasters.”

The IRAA urged interest groups to stop spreading falsehoods and emphasized Tuggar’s effective multipolar approach to international relations, advocating for Nigeria’s interests with global powers.

  • French Consul General celebrates Bastille Day, highlights “Team France’s” achievements

French Consul General celebrates Bastille Day, highlights “Team France’s” achievements

The French Consul General in Lagos, Laurent Favier, has expressed delight at celebrating another Bastille Day.

He said the day is a special one for the French people as they celebrate their national unity around their motto: liberté, égalité, fraternité.      “These are the values we are celebrating today, values that guide France’s action while promoting international solidarity, peace, democracy and multilateralism.

“As the Olympic games are about to kick off in France, let’s embrace together, the values embodied by Olympism, excellence, respect, friendship, determination, equality, inspiration and courage.”

He remarked that the day is celebrated in Lagos and Abuja with their Nigerian friends and all freedom lovers around the world.

Beyond the values and the ties that unite Nigeria and France, he said both countries bilateral cooperation dates back to many decades and he is proud that it is thriving in almost all sectors. “Since the election of President Tinubu, we have had no fewer than four French ministerial visits to Nigeria, including that of the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

“During the recent period, we have established new partnerships, primarily for the brilliant and talented youth and women of this country, whose energy inspires us. With the objectives of job creation and entrepreneurship, we eagerly support the development of vocational training, creative and cultural industries, digital and technological innovation, e-sport, student mobility and university cooperation,” he said.

Adding that the month of June was particularly intense in terms of cultural collaborations with the full support of the French Embassy in Nigeria, he said over 25 Nigerian animation studios were present at the Annecy animation film festival.

More recently, for the first time, a delegation of talented young documentary filmmakers were able to show their projects to several French producers at the Sunny Side of the Doc in La Rochelle. The Fashion and Design sectors were also highlighted by our “Lagos x Paris” Accelerator. The goal, he said, is to provide guidance, structure and support for the growth and development of a number of high-potential Nigerian entrepreneurs both locally and internationally.

“In June, the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) Group also celebrated its 15th anniversary in Nigeria with a successful event in Abuja. Since 2009, the AFD Group has asserted itself a major technical and financial partner of Nigeria, investing 3.3 billion euros in over 57 projects, including 800 million euros through its private-sector subsidiary Proparco. Under the patronage of the French Embassy, the partnership between AFD and Nigeria aims to promote a sustainable and inclusive development model that generates employment, improves infrastructure, and supports education and skills development,” he added.

He went on to add that this enthusiasm is also reflected in the vitality of both countries’ economic and trade relationship. “Nigeria is France’s first trading partner in sub-Saharan Africa and alone accounts for over 60% of French investments in West Africa with approximately 10 billion Euros FDI in Nigeria. 100 French companies are here and employ over 10,000 Nigerians.

The French companies are in the oil, agriculture and agri-food, pharmaceutical industry, renewable energies, Tech, logistics and microfinance sectors. They create factories, farms or vocational training institutes and register their actions over time, showcasing their spirit of initiative and, their deep commitment on social issues.”

He revealed that all members of the “Team France” of the Consulate General do a remarkable job to promote and deepen the bilateral relationship between Nigeria and France through Business France, the Economic Department (to foster economic and commercial business in France or in Nigeria), the French Development Agency Group with its subsidiary Proparco, dedicated to the private-sector, the dynamic Franco-Nigerian Chamber of Commerce and its 450 members, the group of French Foreign Trade Advisors and the France-Nigeria Business Council, Promosalons, Alliance Française de Lagos – Mike Adenuga center, the French Lycée Louis Pasteur, which has just obtained 100% success in the A- Level (Baccalaureate), Campus France (the gateway to attend higher education in France) as well as the Cooperation and Cultural Affairs Department.
