Russia denies coercing Nigerian students to fight Ukraine for visa extensions

Russian authorities have debunked the report making the rounds that it is coercing African students, particularly Nigerians, to fight on its side in the ongoing war with Ukraine in exchange for visa extensions.

The Embassy of the Russian in Abuja described the report as fake news.

Bloomberg had reported that Russia is allegedly sending thousands of migrants and foreign students, including Nigerians, to fight alongside its troops in the war against Ukraine in exchange for visa renewal.

The embassy in a statement yesterday said the claims were far from the truth.

It explained: “The Embassy of the Russian Federation is compelled to emphasize that such news is not only false but also damages Russian-Nigerian educational cooperation by misleading numerous scholarship and grant applicants as well as their partners, who could be extremely concerned by such fakes.

“The Embassy states that Nigerian students face no difficulties in extending their visas while continuing their studies in Russia. Numerous associations of Nigerian students in Russia have not reported any issues in obtaining the necessary documentation to continue their stay in the country.

  • U.S. issues 300 new sanctions that go after Russia’s war economy

U.S. issues 300 new sanctions that go after Russia’s war economy

The United States said yesterday it was imposing sanctions on more than 300 individuals and entities connected to Russia’s war on Ukraine, including financial institutions, the Moscow Stock Exchange, and Chinese companies.

The announcement came a day before U.S. President Joe Biden joins other Group of Seven (G7) leaders for a summit in the Italian city of Bari, in which the war in Ukraine is set to feature prominently.

The sweeping set of sanctions is chiefly focused on trade, finance, and industry.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the sanctions hit “across multiple sectors essential to Russia’s war effort,” including energy, metals, and mining production.

China was singled out for its support of Moscow.

“The United States remains concerned by the scale and breadth of exports from the People’s Republic of China that supply Russia’s military-industrial base,” Blinken’s statement said.

To that end, the U.S. is sanctioning Chinese companies that provide dual-use goods that “fill critical gaps in Russia’s defence production cycle,” he said.

It is not just China, however. Individuals and organisations in countries elsewhere in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean are also subject to new restrictive measures.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Russia “is deeply isolated from the international financial system, leaving the Kremlin’s military desperate for access to the outside world.”

She said the sanctions go after critical supplies Russia needs from other countries.

Several Russian banks also saw their foreign locations put on blacklists to make it harder for financial transactions to be fulfilled.

Other corners of Russia’s financial infrastructure were hit, including the Moscow Stock Exchange and two subsidiaries, and insurance and reinsurance providers.

Hajj: Saudi arrests over 300,000 violators amid enhanced procedures

Authorities in Saudi Arabia have apprehended over 300,000 violators of Hajj regulations, including 153,998 foreigners who arrived on tourist visas without the necessary permits.

In light of these violations, the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has underscored the importance of the Nusuk card.

“This card is the only official proof for conforming pilgrims within the Holy Sites, facilitating their access to services as an identification document,” the ministry reiterated.

This Friday, on the eighth of Dhul-Hijjah, pilgrims will initiate their Hajj rituals by heading to Mina for the Day of Tarwiyah, preparing for their ascension to Arafat on the ninth day, in line with the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad.

This year’s Hajj is characterised by stringent procedures and extensive services deployed by Saudi authorities, spanning across security, health, service, and logistics sectors.

In a concerted effort to ensure a smooth and secure pilgrimage, Saudi authorities have intensified measures to permit only those with valid Hajj permits and the Nusuk card access to the Holy Sites.

The Nusuk card, an essential identification document, facilitates the pilgrims’ stay in Mecca and movement within the Holy Sites throughout the Hajj season.

“Hajj security forces, along with auxiliary agencies, have established extensive security perimeters to safeguard pilgrims and facilitate their movement within the Holy Sites according to designated times,” stated an official.

“We have also worked to arrest violators of Hajj regulations and apply penalties.”

The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has reiterated the necessity for every pilgrim to carry their Nusuk card throughout their pilgrimage.

This card is the only official proof for conforming pilgrims within the Holy Sites, facilitating their access to services as an identification document.

Tawfiq Al-Rabiah, the Saudi Minister of Hajj and Umrah, emphasized the Kingdom’s unwavering commitment to serving the guests of God.

“Saudi Arabia, since its founding, has been dedicated to easing the arrival of pilgrims to the Two Holy Mosques and Holy Sites, ensuring they can perform their rituals with ease and reassurance while receiving the highest levels of care and attention,” Al-Rabiah said.
