Palestine not under Hamas captivity – Envoy

Palestinian Ambassador to Nigeria, Abdallah Abu Shawesh, has refuted the claim by the Israeli government that it is trying to free the Palestinians from Hamas.

Shawesh explained that Hamas, like other organizations in Palestine, was resisting the Israeli occupation.

He therefore said it was impossible to wipe the group as it is an idea against occupation.

He further stressed that Hamas had never attacked any other country apart from Israel.

The envoy who briefed Diplomatic Correspondents in Abuja on Wednesday, November 8, said: “We are not under the captivity of Hamas, it’s Israel’s excuse to justify their occupation. Is it that to free me, you will kill me? If that is a way to help the Palestinians, we can’t accept it.”

Besides, Ambassador Shawesh said the Palestinians had never solicited Israel’s help to free them from Hamas, pointing out that Hamas was created 20 years after Israel’s occupation.

The envoy said the relentless bombardments of the Gaza Strip by the Israeli forces have deprived the entire population of all their basic needs for survival.

He said: “It’s a very dangerous stage, where we have become used to counting the numbers of the slaughtered people, home destructions, injuries, and so on and so forth, without any emotional feeling towards the victims.

“The death toll among the Palestinians in Gaza exceeded 10500, 4800 are children and 2550 are women, while the injured are 24808. 2660 still missing under the rubble, and 1270 are children.

“According to the UN 70% of the Palestinian people became internally displaced persons. All these are not mere numbers, they are shattered dreams, hopes, and aspirations.”

Meanwhile, the Israeli government had accused Hamas of committing war crimes by using hospitals, medical facilities, and playgrounds for terror in Gaza.

Michael Freeman, Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, said: “Hamas is cynically using the Palestinian population of Gaza as human shields, and continues to show a total disregard for the welfare of the Palestinian population.

“Israel looks to limit civilian deaths, Hamas wants to maximize civilian deaths – it is why they put their command-and-control centres under hospitals, and fire their rockets from next to schools, mosques and playgrounds. The sooner that Hamas is vanquished, the sooner there can be a better life for Israelis and Palestinians alike.”

However, his Palestinian counterpart doubted the possibility of wiping out Hamas when their land was still under occupation.

He said what Hamas is doing is an idea that makes it impossible to be killed.

He added: “It is not possible to kill an idea. It will not work. Only political solutions can resolve the issue.”

  • Germany agrees to consider UK-style plan on processing asylum abroad

Germany agrees to consider UK-style plan on processing asylum abroad

People seeking asylum in Germany may be taken to other countries if the proposal scales through, The Nation has learnt.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has pledged to “examine” whether asylum applications could be processed abroad.

This is a hardened stand of the government’s position on illegal migration, as parties seek to counter electoral gains by the far right.

The UK was first to have muted the idea with Rwanda, where migrants in Britain may be sent to claim asylum right to remain.

However, the process is still being contested in the UK courts.

The idea emerged from the marathon session with regional leaders in Germany in the early hours of Tuesday, November 7.

The agreement already has the buy-in of the leaders of Germany’s 16 states.

He cautioned: “The federal government will examine whether the protection status of refugees can also be determined in transit or third countries in the future, in compliance with the Geneva Convention on Refugees and the European Convention on Human Rights.”

“It’s vague and non-committal, as was Chancellor Scholz during the press conference. There are also a whole series of legal questions.”

There are many practical questions about how such a scheme would be put into effect, but the prospect of processing asylum claims abroad is now being more openly discussed in Germany.

Neighbouring Austria recently expressed interest in a similar scheme.

Hendrik Wüst, the Christian Democratic (CDU) premier of North Rhine-Westphalia, warned against dismissing Rwanda-style schemes as “sinister neo-colonialism.”

He said: “If you do that, we will not meet the challenges of a global migration crisis.”

Proposals have also emerged from within the ranks of the governing Social Democratic Party (SPD) and Free Democratic Party (FDP).

They range from reviving the 2016 EU-Turkey deal, which stemmed the influx of migrants into Greece, to setting up new agreements with Senegal, Morocco or Rwanda.

It is unclear whether successful applicants could then proceed to Germany or would have to stay in the third country in which their claim was processed.

Pope Francis ‘slightly unwell’, exhausted, Holy See says

Pope Francis is “slightly unwell” and exhausted after numerous audiences at the Vatican, according to the Holy See.

The head of the Catholic Church mentioned his poor health during a meeting with representatives of the European Rabbinical Conference on Monday, local media reported.

The pontiff had a long day filled with audiences and preferred to greet the rabbis individually, a spokesperson for the Holy See, Matteo Bruni, said in a statement.

Francis’ planned activities for Monday are expected to continue as usual.

Gaza evacuations suspended as Abbas presses U.S. for ceasefire

Efforts were under way yesterday to resume evacuations of injured Gazans and foreign nationals through the Rafah crossing to Egypt, suspended since Saturday after a deadly attack on an ambulance, Egyptian, United States and Qatari officials said.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas demanded an immediate Israeli ceasefire at a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Ramallah, while Gaza’s health ministry said dozens died in a strike on a refugee camp overnight.

Blinken, who has dismissed the idea of a ceasefire by Israel for fear it would benefit Hamas, was making an unannounced visit to the occupied West Bank as part of efforts to prevent the Israel-Hamas war spreading.

The Rafah crossing to Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula is the only exit point from Gaza not controlled by Israel. Aid trucks were still able to travel into Gaza, two Egyptian sources said.

Evacuations began on Wednesday under an internationally brokered deal.

More than 300 Americans have left Gaza, but some still remain, Jonathan Finer, deputy national security adviser, said.

“We believe it will (reopen) this afternoon,” a senior U.S. State Department official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Don’t hold me to it,” the official added.

At the Maghazi refugee camp refugee camp in Gaza, people searched for victims or survivors.

“All night, I and the other men were trying to pick the dead from the rubble. We got children, dismembered, torn apart flesh,” said Saeed al-Nejma, 53, adding that he had been asleep with his family when the blast hit his neighbourhood.

A spokesman for the health ministry in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip said Israeli forces had struck the camp overnight, killing at least 47 people. Asked for comment, the Israeli military said they were gathering details.

In a separate attack, 21 Palestinians from one family, including women and children, were killed in strikes overnight, the health ministry said.

“We demand that you stop them from committing these crimes immediately,” Abbas told Blinken, urging an “immediate ceasefire” from Israel.

“There are no words to describe the war of genocide and destruction to which our Palestinian people are being subjected in Gaza at the hands of the Israeli war machine, without regard to the rules of international law,” Palestinian news agency WAFA quoted Abbas as telling Blinken.

Foreign ministers from Qatar, Saudi, Egypt, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates met Blinken in Amman on Saturday and also urged him to persuade Israel to agree to a ceasefire.

But Blinken said a ceasefire would benefit Hamas, allowing it to regroup and attack again. Instead, the U.S. wants localised pauses in fighting to allow in humanitarian aid and for people to leave Gaza.

“The Secretary reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to the delivery of life-saving humanitarian assistance and resumption of essential services in Gaza,” spokesperson Matthew Miller said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu again rejected calls for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Gaza health officials said yesterday more than 9,770 Palestinians have been killed in the war.

Israel continued to strike the Gaza Strip by air, sea, and ground overnight.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said there was also intense bombardment, artillery explosions and air strikes in the vicinity of the Al-Quds Hospital in Gaza’s Tal Al-Hawa area.

U.S. special envoy David Satterfield said in Amman on Saturday that 800,000 to a million people had moved south, while 350,000 to 400,000 remained in and around Gaza City.

Living conditions in Gaza, already dire before the war, have deteriorated. Food is scarce, residents are drinking salty water and medical services are collapsing.

The UN humanitarian office estimates that nearly 1.5 million of Gaza’s 2.3 million people are internally displaced.

Oyo Muslims seek UN intervention in Israel-Hamas war

Coalition of Muslim Organisations (CMO) in Oyo State has sought the intervention of international community, led by United Nations (UN), in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas with a view to stop bombings in Gaza and West Bank.

The call formed part of the CMO’s request as presented by Prof. Modiu Durowoju during a solidarity rally at Iwo-Road intersection in Ibadan.

Hundreds of Muslims in Oyo State on Saturday staged a peaceful protest, which started at the Iwo Road under bridge around 9:00 a.m and culminated at OTM Mosque in Iwo Road around 12:00 p.m.

The protesters said many innocent lives have been lost as a result of the war.

Durowoju, who explained that the CMO’s call was sequel to deliberations and careful study of the ongoing war in Palestine, also urged the United Nations to lead efforts at creating humanitarian corridors, ensure aid and relief packages get into Gaza and other places.

Durowoju also called for lifting of siege on Gaza as part of ceasefire and peace process.

“We call on the Arab League, the African Union and other regional governments to exert pressure that will change the apartheid character of the Zionist State of Israel and make it conform to international laws and norms,” he said.

Also, Chief Imam of Organisation of Thadomunul Muslimeen (OTM) mosque, Adogba, Ibadan, Alhaji Abdulkabeer Muhammadul-Awal, said the gathering aligned with global advocacy for protection of human rights and freedom as taught in Islam.

In his keynote address, the grand Mufti, Conference of Islamic Organizations, Dr. Dhikrullai Shafi, called on Arab nations to cut diplomatic ties with Israel and support Palestine with allied forces and open their borders for easy passage of food, water, drugs and other aids for the oppressed women and children in Gaza.

According to him, “Israel came into being 75 years ago. Before 1948, there was no nation called Israel. It is a product of the United States, in connivance with the United Nations, following the Berlin conference and aftermath of the Second World War.”

A lecturer at the Department of Political Science and International Relations, Osun State University, Okuku Campus, Dr. Usamat Olalere, appealed to the United Nations to implement the two states resolution on Palestine to ensure peace.

The Dawah Missioner for Jannata Islamiyya Association of Nigeria, Oyo State Chapter, Ustaz Luqman Gbadamosi, called on Muslims to boycott Israeli products to weaken the country’s financial power to prosecute ongoing war against the Palestinians.

  • The butchery in Gaza

    The butchery in Gaza

How can any sane person enjoy or derive satisfaction from the slaughter that is now taking place in Gaza? It is indefensible. It is unacceptable.

It is nothing but state-sponsored terror in its most savage and primitive form.

It is ethnic cleansing. It is genocide. It is mass murder. It is wickedness. It is barbaric. It is evil.

It is the most notorious and graphic example of man’s inhumanity to man.

It is unconciable and it is unjustifiable.

All my life I have loved the State of Israel and defended her right to exist.

This is especially so given the fact that I am a Pentecostal Christian who wholeheartedly believes the biblical scripture that says “He who blesses Israel is blessed and he who curses Israel is cursed”.

I acknowledge the fact that the Jews have suffered and been persecuted more than any other race in the history of the world and I was one of the first in my country Nigeria to wholeheartedly condemn the frightful massacre carried out by Hamas on October 7th.

Despite that I cannot possibly rationalise what is going on in Gaza in the name of retaliation or the desire to destroy and wipe out Hamas.

When you kill innocent and defenceless Palestinian women and children you are not wiping out Hamas but strengthening their cause and giving millions of people all over the world a reason to support their cause and join their ranks.

Israel is committing war crimes and crimes against humanity.

It is an irrational, unreasonable, emotional and disproportionate response to what was undoubtedly a terrible and unconciable wrong which may win the battle for the Jewish state but will also inevitably cost them support in much of the civilised world.

There is no doubt that Israel has the right to defend herself especially from those who claim she does not have the right to exist but no sane person can applaud the butchering of women and children, the targetting and bombing of hospitals, churches, schools, mosques, universities, homes and ambulances and the wholesale slaughter of 10,000 civilians (and still counting) all in the space of 3 weeks.

Israel is being guided and led by rage and the spirit of vengeance. She has lost all reason and those with a level head are no where near the levers of power. She is now like a wild, wounded lion devouring everything and everyone in its path.

What was once a reasonable, rational, equitable, just, fair-minded, strong, confident and flourishing nation which was the shining light of the Middle East and our collective pride and joy as Christians has now become a rogue killer state which is as bloodthirsty and bloodlusting as the Nazis of Hitler’s Germany, ISIS, Hamas, Boko Haram, Daesh and Al Qaeda all rolled into one.

We must have the decency and prescence of mind to condemn the slaughter of ALL human beings whether they be Christians, Muslims, Jews or anything else.

Israel has a right to defend herself but not the right to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity or to wipe out an entire race and displace and relocate an entire people.

Any Christian that believes otherwise in the name of “blessing or loving Israel” is not a real Christian and is not a true friend of the Jewish state.

Why? Because real friends tell one another the bitter truth and real Christians do not support injustice and the massacre of defenceless women and children.

    Only demons do that!

If you really want to bless and love Israel then tell Israeli leaders the bitter truth and pray that the lord will deliver them from the madness and unrestrained rage that has seized their minds.

Blessing and loving Israel does not involve encouraging them to wipe out a whole race.

Blessing and loving Israel does not involve supporting them to kill every Palestinian in the Gaza strip in the name of eliminating Hamas.

Blessing and loving Israel does not mean we should support them to target and kill every Muslim and Christian man, woman and child in Gaza.

Blessing and loving Israel does not mean we should sit by silently and watch them turn into worse monsters than the German Nazis that murdered 6 million of their people in gas chambers during World War II.

Blessing and loving Israel does not mean supporting their every action even when it is wrong.

Blessing and loving Israel does not mean saying no to a humanitarian pause in the ground offensive and bombing or a ceasefire in order to get the wounded out and send in much needed food and medical supplies.

Blessing and loving Israel does not mean that we should lose our humanity, our compassion, our decency and our sense of reasoning.

Blessing and loving Israel does not mean supporting those in the Israeli Knesset that have said the the 2.5 million Palestinians that live in Gaza should be either killed or relocated to 100 different countries at the rate of 25,000 Palestinians per country.

Blessing and loving Israel does not mean that we should espouse the hateful philosophy and satanic spirit of apartheid which we as Africans spent so many decades opposing and resisting in South Africa.

Blessing and loving Israel means admonishing them to be accomodating, flexible, kind, calm, compassionate, restrained, rational, reasonable, level- headed and loving even where and when they have been badly hurt and gravely wounded as they were on October 7th.

Blessing and loving Israel means encouraging them to fight their enemies and defend themselves in a dignified and civilised way by abiding by the laws of war and armed conflict, by honoring the rules of engagement and by working within the strictures and framework of international law whilst in the field of battle.

Blessing and loving Isreal means encouraging the Jews and giving them hope and support in their time of need, reminding them to have faith in God and admonishing them to be righteous in all their ways.

That is what we are expected to do as believers and not to celebrate and rejoice when they slaughter innocent women and children and when they indulge in what can best be described as the second holocaust.

  • Israel – Hamas war: Hezbollah leader threatens escalation

Israel – Hamas war: Hezbollah leader threatens escalation

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said Friday that his powerful militia is already engaged in unprecedented fighting along the Lebanon-Israel border and threatened a further escalation as Israel’s war with Hamas nears the one-month mark.

In televised remarks — his first since the Palestinian militants’ deadly Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel — Nasrallah stopped short of announcing that Hezbollah would fully enter the war, a move that would have devastating consequences for both Lebanon and Israel.

The United States, Israel’s strongest backer, has warned Hezbollah and its patron Iran against entering the fray and has sent warships to the Mediterranean, a move Nasrallah said “will not scare us.”

Hezbollah is prepared for all options, he declared, “and we can resort to them at any time.” The fighting would “not be limited” to the scale seen so far, he added. In recent weeks, Hezbollah has fired rockets across the border daily, mainly hitting military targets in northern Israel, but it has a substantial arsenal capable of hitting anywhere in Israel and thousands of battle-hardened fighters.

Nasrallah’s speech had been widely anticipated throughout the region as an indication of whether the Israel-Hamas conflict would spiral into a regional war.

“Some say I’m going to announce that we have entered the battle,” Nasrallah said Friday. “We already entered the battle on Oct. 8.” He argued that Hezbollah’s cross-border strikes have pulled away Israeli forces that would otherwise be focused on Hamas in Gaza.

Celebratory gunshots rang out over Beirut as thousands packed into a square in the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital to watch Nasrallah’s speech broadcast via video-link on a massive screen.

Thursday saw the most significant escalation on the Israel-Lebanon border since the war started, with Hezbollah firing off a barrage of mortar shells and anti-tank missiles and, for the first time, exploding drones.

In Israel, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday to urge protections for civilians in the fighting with Hamas, as Israeli troops tightened their encirclement of Gaza City.

Nasrallah criticized the strong U.S. backing of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza that has killed more than 9,000 people, mostly civilians. While U.S. officials in recent days have pushed more publicly for protecting civilians in Gaza, they have yet to call for a cease-fire.

The Hezbollah leader said U.S. President Joe Biden had made a “fake argument that Hamas cut off children’s heads (without) evidence, but stayed silent for the thousands of children in Gaza who were decapitated and their limbs were torn apart” by Israeli bombing.

Nasrallah praised Hamas’ Oct. 7 rampage across southern Israel. The militants attacked farming villages, towns and military posts, killing more than 1,400 people — most of them civilians — and taking hundreds of hostages back to Gaza while Israeli forces were slow to respond.

It was “proof that Israel is weaker than a spider’s web” and one month into the war, it “has not been able to make any achievement,” Nasrallah said.

He insisted that Hamas had planned the attack in secrecy and that Hezbollah had no part in it. “This great, large-scale operation was purely the result of Palestinian planning and implementation,” Nasrallah said.

Facing a relentless aerial bombardment and now a ground incursion by Israeli forces in Gaza, Hamas leaders have been pushing — sometimes publicly — for Hezbollah to widen its involvement in the war. Nasrallah met last week in Beirut with senior Hamas official Saleh al-Arouri and with Ziad Nakhaleh of the allied group Islamic Jihad.

However, Hezbollah officials have avoided publicly setting a specific red line, saying vaguely that they would join the war if they see that Hamas is on the verge of defeat. Instead, Hezbollah has taken calculated steps to keep Israel’s military busy on its border with Lebanon, but not to the extent of igniting an all-out war.

The Israeli military said seven of their soldiers and one civilian had been killed on the northern border as of Friday. More than 50 Hezbollah fighters and 10 militants with allied groups, as well as 10 civilians, including a Reuters journalist, have been killed on the Lebanese side.

“Don’t test us,” Netanyahu warned Hezbollah on Friday. A mistake, he said, “will exact a price you can’t even imagine.”

Israel considers the Iran-backed Lebanese Shiite militant group its most serious immediate threat, estimating that Hezbollah has around 150,000 rockets and missiles aimed at Israel, as well as drones and surface-to-air and surface-to-sea missiles.

    • FG calls for truce

Israel has launched an expanded ground operation in the Gaza Strip after creating a near-blackout of communication in the area. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called it a war for Israel’s existence.

After creating a near-blackout of communication in the Gaza Strip with increased bombardment and artillery fire overnight, Israel launched an expanded ground operation yesterday.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referred to it as a battle for Israel’s survival, declaring, “Never again is now.”

Gaza residents described the massive bombardment from land, air, and sea as the most intense of the three-week-long Israel-Hamas conflict.

Other countries, United Nations officials, and aid organizations described a dire situation in Gaza, where 2.3 million people are cut off from the outside world.

According to the Health Ministry in Hamas-ruled Gaza, the Palestinian death toll has surpassed 7,700, with women and children accounting for the majority of the fatalities. In the occupied West Bank, more than 110 Palestinians have been killed in violence and Israeli raids.

The Israeli government reports that more than 1,400 people were killed in Israel during a surprise incursion by Hamas militants, including at least 310 soldiers. At least 229 hostages were taken into Gaza, and four have since been released.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has reiterated its call for an immediate durable and sustained humanitarian truce between Israeli forces and Hamas in Gaza.

The Nigerian government also called for the opening of a humanitarian corridor, saying that the situation in Gaza is dire and requires immediate attention as a result of the recent uptick in violence.

Women, children, and other vulnerable groups, the government said, are among innocent civilians that have suffered greatly as a result of the consequences of the crisis between Hamas and Israel.

In a statement by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, Nigeria urged all the parties in the conflict to uphold the fundamental values of human rights and international humanitarian law, which places a premium on ensuring civilians’ safety and well-being even in times of conflict.

    The statement reads:

“The Federal Government of Nigeria is calling on the Israeli Government to grant humanitarian access to the millions of people that have been displaced since the crisis broke. The lack of water, food, medical supplies and fuel shortages has compounded the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria also calls on all parties involved to immediately agree to a ceasefire and engage in diplomatic negotiations to resolve the conflict.

Both parties are urged to exercise utmost restraint and prioritize the safety and well-being of civilians. “Indiscriminate attacks that result in civilian casualties must be avoided at all costs.

The Palestinian Ambassador to Nigeria, Abdullah Shawesh and the Justice for Palestinians Coalition (JUPAC), have called on the international community to intensify their support to bring an end to the ongoing war between Israel and Gaza which has led to the death of many and destruction of properties.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja yesterday, Palestinian Ambassador to Nigeria, Shawesh lamented that over 1.4 million have been displaced in the Gaza strip, while more than 181,000 housing units were damaged by the aggression, including more than 27,781 units completely destroyed.

Shawesh said the total number of martyrs since October 7th, reached more than 6,504 Palestinian, 70 percent are children, women and elderly, while 1,800 civilians sustained various levels of injuries.

He noted that in the occupied west bank reached 104 and 900 sustained various levels of injuries.

He however noted that the death toll among Palestinian journalists reached 20.

The envoy further condemned the campaign he described as a brazen and unjustified campaign against the United Nations Secretary-general, Antonio Guterres for speaking about what is happening in Gaza.

”73 of the health workers were killed, while 100 injured. 12 hospitals and 32 health centres were out of service due to direct attacks or running out of fuel, while 25 ambulances became out of service due the Israeli attacks’’, Shawesh added.

Moshood called on the Arab League, African Union and all other regional bodies with a history of colonialism to intensify their support for the Palestinian struggle.

‘He noted that the international community led by the UN must retrieve the peace process from the monopoly of the United States.

‘’We urge all the Arab nations to put on hold all talks and plans about normalisation with Israel until the State of Palestine is achieved on the pre 1967 border lines’’.
