Tinubu lauds Macky Sall for not seeking third term

President Bola Tinubu has commended the decision of Senegal President Macky Sall not to seek a third term in office after the end of his tenure.

Mr Dele Alake, Presidential Adviser, Special Duties, Communications and Strategy, revealed this in a statement on friday in Abuja.

There had been protests in Senegal in the past few weeks following speculations about Sall’s third term ambition after his second term in office in 2024.

Senegal is a country considered as one of the most stable democratic governments in Africa.

Sall on Monday said he would not offer himself as a candidate for the Feb. 25, 2024 presidential election in his country.

Tinubu said that the decision by Sall was in the best interest of his country and the peace and stability of the West African region.

He described the Senegal’s president decision to abide by the constitutional term of office and not offer himself for third term as heart-warming.

“It has brought great joy and relief. As a Democrat, I must commend my brother for his statesmanship.

“With this singular decision, President Sall chose the stability, security and economic well-being of his people over and above narrow personal interest.

“The impact of this important decision will be felt beyond the shores and borders of Senegal and across our West African sub-region.

Tinubu said that Sall has demonstrated that leadership is about serving the people honourably and quitting the stage when the constitutionally-stipulated time is up.

“By his example, democracy and respect for people power will take stronger roots in Africa and will continue to flourish.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Sall, 61, came to power in 2012 and was re-elected in 2019.

The Senegalese constitution was amended in 2016 but still provides for a maximum of two terms.

But his supporters argued that his first term, which came before the constitutional amendment, didn’t count, something the opposition contested..

“My decision is not to be a candidate in the presidential election even though the constitution gives me the right to do so,” Sall said.

UN, AU hail Burundi soldiers for securing Somalia

The African Union and United Nations envoys in Somalia have lauded Burundi peacekeepers for their sterling stabilisation efforts in Somalia.

Mohammed El-Amine Souef, the special representative of the Chairperson of the AU Commission for Somalia said Burundi is a key contributor to peace and stability in Africa, especially in Somalia and Central Africa.

Souef, who is also the head of the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), said Burundi has contributed immensely to the ideal universal peace mainly through political solutions anchored on mediation and constant engagement in favour of peace and security.

“Burundi has never resisted investing in peace operations which for many people represent the unique hope for finding lasting peace like in Somalia and Central Africa,” he said.

Anita Kiki Gbeho, the UN Secretary-General’s Deputy Special Representative for United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia also lauded Burundian peacekeepers for their courage and sacrifice.

Gbeho pledges the UN’s commitment to continue supporting the AU Mission with more than 3,000 Burundian troops.

“You are making a difference daily to the security of the Somali people,” she noted.

Sam Okiding, ATMIS force commander, said the Burundian troops have played a key role in pacifying Somalia and protecting the civilian population in their area of responsibility.

“The Burundi contingent in Somalia has been at the forefront in fostering peace and stability in their Areas of Responsibility, and we commend you for your selfless efforts,” Okiding said.

    • Akume hosts Chinese ambassador in Abuja

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, has assured the Government of the People’s Republic of China, of the Federal Government’s commitment to sustain bilateral relations to boost development.

According to a statement issued yesterday by the Director of Information in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), Willie Bassey, the SGF stated this when he received the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Cui Jianchun, with his delegation in his office.

He said that Nigeria has been enjoying strong bilateral relations with China in areas of infrastructure, trade, agriculture among others. He therefore solicited their support to invest more in the country to enable the present administration accomplish its Renewed Hope Agenda.

“We want to thank your country for the massive investment in the areas of infrastructure in this country. Nigeria got soft loan from your country and carefully invested in rail transportation and road transportation. The differences are becoming quite clear.

“We expect more investments and I believe that is why you are here with your businessmen as well. Any assistance you are giving us, we will step up because of the desire of the present Government to do a lot. We will be expecting support from you from time to time”, he said.

He appreciated the Chinese Government for granting young Nigerians scholarship to study in their country. He also used the opportunity to appeal for more scholarship to enable more Nigerians study in China.

“We appreciate the fact that you have given scholarship to our students studying in various universities in the Peoples Republic of China and some have graduated. We want to appeal that you step up the issue of scholarship and give us more.

“You won’t regret it, before you know it, you find many Nigerians speaking your language. We look forward to the time we will also establish faculties in Nigerian universities where Chinese language would be taught to students”, he said.

SGF assured that the cultural cooperation between Nigeria and the People’s Republic of China through cultural exchange would also be sustained. According to him, this would help in cementing the relationship between both countries.

Speaking earlier, the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria Cui Jianchun while presenting three (3) documents to the SGF, assured Nigeria of the commitment of the Government of the People’s Republic of China to support the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu with the workable development strategies that would turn around the nation’s fortune.

Kanani said in a press conference: “The continuing crimes of the Zionist entity have proven once again that normalisation with the Zionist entity will not stop the Zionist killing machine, nor will it deter it or affect it.

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the Israeli attack on the city of Jenin in the occupied West Bank, calling for the intervention of international bodies to put an end to such violations.

In a statement, the ministry affirmed Egypt’s “complete rejection of the repeated Israeli attacks and incursions against Palestinian cities, resulting in innocent civilian casualties due to the use of excessive and indiscriminate force, and a flagrant violation of the provisions of international law and international legitimacy, especially the International humanitarian law that imposes clear and concise commitments.”

In a statement, Jordanian foreign ministry spokesperson Sinan al-Majali strongly condemned the Israeli offensive, saying the escalation “constitutes a violation of international humanitarian law and obligations of the [Israeli] occupation”.

The spokesperson called for immediate and effective action by the international community to stop the Israeli assault and provide protection for Palestinians in all occupied territories.

The Arab League’s Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit condemned the “brutal military operation”  in occupied Jenin in a tweet. He wrote: “The bombing of cities and camps by planes and the bulldozing of houses and roads is a collective punishment and revenge” that will lead to further escalations.

He also appealed to “advocates of peace” around the world to intervene and stop the “criminal operation”.

The United Nations resident humanitarian coordinator in Palestine, Lynn Hastings, expressed alarm in a tweet as she called for access to the injured.

But Israeli Foreign minister Eli Cohen yesterday signalled his country did not intend to expand its operation in Jenin to the entire occupied West Bank.

“Our goal is to focus on Jenin, and our goal is to focus only on the terrorists and their cells,” Cohen told reporters in Jerusalem.

Israel’s ‘criminal attack in Jenin’ sparks condemnation, alarm

Israel’s air raids and ground attacks on the Jenin refugee camp in the northern occupied West Bank Bank yesterday drew condemnation from Iran, Egypt, Jordan and the Arab League and concern from the United Nations.

This is as the death toll from the large-scale military operation continued to mount.

Israel struck targets in a militant stronghold in the occupied West Bank and deployed hundreds of troops yesterday (local time) in an incursion that resembled the broad attacks carried out during the second Palestinian uprising two decades ago. Palestinian health officials said at least eight Palestinians were killed and dozens wounded.

The assault began with drone strikes and continued with troops, which remained inside the Jenin refugee camp at midday, pushing ahead with the largest operation in the area during more than a year of fighting. It came amid growing domestic pressure for a tough response to a series of attacks on Israeli settlers, including a shooting attack last month that killed four Israelis.

Black smoke rose from the crowded streets of the camp while exchanges of fire rang out and the buzzing of drones was heard overhead. Military bulldozers plowed through narrow streets, damaging buildings as they cleared the way for Israeli forces.

The Palestinians and neighbouring Jordan and Egypt and the 57-nation Organisation of Islamic Cooperation condemned the violence, along with the United Arab Emirates, which established diplomatic relations with Israel in 2020.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani condemned the attack on Jenin, describing it as a “reckless crime and a prominent measure of state terrorism”, stressing that “the Zionist entity will be defeated this time as well”.

Rioters raid home of French mayor, injure wife

Rioters in France yesterday ram-raided the home of a Paris suburb mayor, set the car alight and launched fireworks at his wife and young children as they fled during a fifth night of nationwide unrest over Tuesday’s police shooting of a teen of North African descent.

Vincent Jeanbrun, 39, the centre-right mayor of the southern suburb of L’Hay-les-Roses, was at the town hall when his house was attacked with his wife Melanie and children asleep inside.

The aggressors drove their vehicle at the suburban house but were halted by a low wall ringing the property’s outdoor terrace, the local public prosecutor said. They then torched their vehicle.

As Jeanbrun’s wife and children, aged 5 and 7, took flight through the back yard, they were targeted with fireworks. Jeanbrun told Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne his wife had had surgery on a broken leg and would face three-month rehabilitation.

“While attempting to shield them and fleeing the attackers, my wife and one of my children were hurt,” the mayor said.

French PM condemned the attack on the mayor’s home and vowed to bring perpetrators to justice.

Rioting diminished Saturday night following the youth’s funeral earlier in the day.

The government deployed about 45,000 police onto the streets to control unrest after the funeral of Nahel, a 17-year-old with Algerian and Moroccan parents, who was shot during a traffic stop on Tuesday in the Paris suburb of Nanterre.

In five nights of protests, rioters have torched cars and looted stores, while also targeting town halls, police stations and schools — buildings that represent the French state. The French interior ministry said 719 people were arrested Saturday night, fewer than the 1,311 the previous night and 875 on Thursday night.

“Forty-five thousand police officers and thousands of firefighters have been mobilized to enforce order. Their action … made for a quieter night,” the ministry said on Twitter.

The biggest flashpoint overnight was in Marseille, where police fired tear gas and fought street battles with youths around the city center late into the night.

In Paris, security forces lined the city’s famous Champs Elysees Avenue after a call on social media to gather there. Shop facades were boarded up to prevent potential damage.

The local prosecutor told reporters that an investigation into attempted murder had been opened. No suspects have been arrested.

Two dead, 28 injured in mass shooting at U.S. party

Two people were killed and 28 injured after a mass shooting at a block party in Baltimore, Maryland, United States during the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Around 12:35 a.m. yesterday, Baltimore Police said they responded to the 800 block of Gretna Court after reports of a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers discovered multiple victims with gunshot wounds.

An 18-year-old female was pronounced dead at the scene, said Baltimore Police Department Acting Commissioner Richard Worley, who provided an update at the scene.

Nine victims were transported to local hospitals and an additional 20 victims walked into area hospitals across the region, police said.

A 20-year-old male was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly after the incident.

Three of the victims are in critical condition. The remaining victims range in condition and age.

“This was the reckless, cowardly act that happened here and that has permanently altered many lives and cost two people their lives,” Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said at a news conference on scene.

“I want those who are responsible to hear me, and hear me very clearly,” he said. “We will not stop until we find you, and we will find you. Until then, I hope with every single breath that you take, that you think about the lives that you took, and you think about the lives that you impacted here tonight.”

No arrests have been made and an investigation remains ongoing.

Worley said police are “actively reviewing video and talking to possible witnesses to try to identify suspects.”

Police urge anyone with information to contact homicide detectives at (410) 396-2100. People can also anonymously report any information through the Metro Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-866-7LOCKUP.

Zulu King treated for suspected poisoning

South Africa’s Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini is being treated in hospital for suspected poisoning, his traditional prime minister has said.

The king sought medical attention in Eswatini as he is uncomfortable with seeking treatment in South Africa, Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi added.

This follows the sudden death of one of his senior advisers, also of suspected poisoning, Chief Buthelezi said.

However, the king’s official spokesman said he was in “perfect health”.

The monarch was currently not in hospital, and “unnecessary panic” should not be created, Prince Africa Zulu said, in what appeared to be an indirect reference to Chief Buthelezi’s statement.

King Misuzulu was crowned in front of thousands of his subjects last October.

But a vicious power struggle has been raging within the royal family over the 48-year-old’s accession, and tensions have also recently surfaced between the monarch and Chief Buthelezi.

The Zulu king does not have formal political power and the monarch’s role within broader South African society is largely ceremonial, but he remains hugely influential with a yearly government-funded budget of several million dollars.

A faction within the family is challenging his claim to the throne in court, insisting that he is not the rightful heir of his late father, King Goodwill Zwelithini.

Chinese naval ships visit Nigeria to strengthen bilateral ties

A Chinese Navy Escort Task Group (ETG) 162 yesterday visited Nigeria to strengthen bilateral relationship between the two countries.

The group comprised MSL Destroyer NANNING, MSL Frigate SANYA and Supply Ship WEISHANHU.

Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria Mr. Chi Jian Chun said the visitation of the Chinese envoy, scheduled for July 2 to 6, would also enhance maritime security within West Africa.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that MSL Destroyer NANNING, made the port call at Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) Berth 21, while the other two ships remained at anchorage.

Chun said the delegation from China was big with more than 700 people and three ships to Nigeria.

“The visit is to further deepen the relationship the two countries have with one another and also seek to strengthen and improve our relationship and cooperation with each other.

“This visit demonstrates the harmony and symphony between Nigeria and China,” he said.

The ambassador said China and Nigeria would continue to work together and promote peace and harmony while also seeking ways to make contributions to the international community.

“I believe that this visit will deepen the cooperation between both countries’ military forces so that we can work together to overcome obstacles.

“We will continue to do more things to facilitate and promote the relationship between the two countries,” Chun said.

Also, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command, Rear Adm. Joseph Akpan, said the visitation would further help to cement the relationship between the two countries.

This is “especially between the Nigerian Navy and the Chinese Navy as well as the military. This will help us fight crimes, especially in the Gulf of Guinea.

“During their period of stay, our men will be interacting, we will be having some sporting activities, exchange of momentous and gifts.

“We will also discuss the future of both navies, especially on how we can benefit from each other,” Akpan said.

The FOC added that the term called ‘sea riders’ enabled some of the Nigerian Navy personnel onboard the Chinese ship and they could also have some of their own men onboard our ship.

“This helps to foster friendship across the horizon,” Akpan said.

CIA denies U.S. involvement in Wagner Group’s rebellion in Russia

UNITED States’ Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director, William Burns, denied yesterday any involvement of the United States in the recent rebellion of the Russian military group “Wagner.”

Burns asserted that the “uprising,” led by Wagner’s commander Yevgeny Prigozhin, is purely an internal matter for Russia.

Moreover, Burns described Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions in Ukraine as a “strategic failure” for Russia. He emphasized that the rebellion within Wagner is a stark reminder of the detrimental effects of Putin’s policies on Russian society and its political system.

Following the incident, The Wall Street Journal reported that Burns personally reached out to Sergei Naryshkin, the director of Russian intelligence, to deliver the message that the United States had no involvement in the internal chaos witnessed in Russia during the rebellion.

The phone call between Burns and Naryshkin marked the highest level of contact between the U.S. and Russian governments since the attempted insurgency occurred.

In response to the Wagner Group’s rebellion, U.S. President Joe Biden also made a statement distancing Washington and its allies from the event. He characterized the rebellion as a manifestation of internal conflicts within the Russian system and emphasized the importance of recognizing Putin’s persistent focus on controlling Ukraine.

Map: How rare are UK earthquakes? Country ‘riddled’ with fault lines

    • Earthquake that struck UK on Wednesday night is “not out of the ordinary”, experts have revealed, as hundreds of tremors hit country every year

The UK earthquakes hit by hundreds every year, experts have revealed, as they say the country is ‘riddled’ with fault lines.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) told The Independent as many as 300 earthquakes impact the UK each year, with around a tenth of those being large enough to be felt by people near the epicentre, while the others are detected by sensitive instruments.

The 3.3 magnitude earthquake that rocked the country at 8.21pm on Wednesday is one of the roughly three larger tremors that affect the UK every year, according to BGS seismologist David Hawthorn

It had an epicentre 7.3km below the village of Tean, with people living in Staffordshire reporting “an initial rumbling, then a bang” as well as rattling windows and doors.

But while an earthquake of this size in the UK is a “reasonably uncommon” occurrence, it is “totally within the normal parameters” and “not out of the ordinary”, he said.

Sergei Lebedev, Professor of Geophysics at the University of Cambridge, agreed that a tremor of a magnitude over three is “fairly common”. He said: “Above three is not a microearthquake – which are very common – and is felt and can cause minor damage so, of course, is a concern. But Wednesday’s tremor was in an area where they are quite common. These earthquakes don’t occur every day, but on a 10-year scale they are fairly common.”

In fact, earthquakes, in general, are not extraordinary events in this country, Mr Hawthorn added, explaining: “The fault map of the UK looks insane – we’re just riddled with plains of weakness. Geologically speaking, the UK has four or five different land masses, all of which have been squeezed together over many years – so there are faults between the land masses and then there are multiple faults on the land masses themselves.”

Most earthquakes are associated with tectonic plate boundaries and are caused by the tectonic stress transmitted from plate boundaries, according to Mr Lebedev.

Earthquakes are not increasing in frequency in this country either, Mr Hawthorn said. “People often think there are more earthquakes with each year, but it’s just that we’ve got better at reporting them.”

Natural earthquakes occur at a very constant rate, whereas human-induced earthquakes will vary depending on what is happening at the time, he explained, citing the “huge number” of earthquakes in Stoke-on-Trent when the area was devoted to coal mining.

Mr Lebedev similarly said earthquakes occur at a “very constant” rate in the UK, so there is no expectation that tremors will become more or less common in the future after Wednesday night’s quake. However, while it is possible to make predictions of frequency, the BGS thinks it is in all likelihood not possible to predict earthquakes. This is partly due to the “incredibly complicated system” of the various fault lines, as well as the depth at which earthquakes occur, often 10km down into the earth, said Mr Hawthorn.

“It is phenomenally difficult to work out where earthquakes will occur,” he said. “There could be another earthquake right now, or there might not be another for 10 years.”

But, while the timing of when an earthquake might happen is “random”, Mr Lebedev, who is currently researching where and why earthquakes happen in the UK, said: “We cannot predict – earthquake prediction is what magicians do – but we can forecast where they might happen.”

He explained forecasts can be made based on where earthquakes have occurred in the past as well as the thickness of tectonic plates.

The area where the earthquake hit on Wednesday is located on a thinner plate, which therefore means more tremors are likely to happen there.

The tremor that struck on Wednesday night is the largest of 21 earthquakes to hit the UK in the last two months, comfortably beating two 1.8 magnitude tremors felt on the Isle of Mull in May.

It falls some way short of the record earthquake in the UK, which the BGS records as a 6.1 magnitude tremor in the North Sea, about 75 miles north east of Great Yarmouth, on June 7 1931.

Filey felt the strongest effects of that earthquake, with a church spire rotated, which was felt as far away as Surrey, Norway, Denmark and Germany

Mark Begg, 30, said he was at home in Uttoxeter when he felt “a very large shake”.

He said he checked “around the house to see if I could see anything” and “after noticing there were no signs of damage I concluded it was most likely a mini earthquake”.
