Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has resigned amid Nepal’s worst unrest in decades, as public anger mounts over the deaths of 19 anti-corruption protesters in clashes with police on Monday.
Yesterday, crowds set fire to parliament in the capital Kathmandu, sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky. Government buildings and the houses of political leaders were attacked around the country.
Three more deaths were reported yesterday. Amid the chaos, jail officials said 900 inmates managed to escape from two prisons in Nepal’s western districts.
The demonstrations were triggered by a ban on social media platforms. It was lifted on Monday – but by then protests had swelled into a mass movement.
Nepal’s army chief issued a statement late on Tuesday accusing demonstrators of taking advantage of the current crisis by damaging, looting and setting fire to public and private property.
It said if unrest continued, “all security institutions, including the Nepal Army, are committed to taking control of the situation,” effective from 22:00 local time (16:15 GMT; 17:15 BST), without detailing what this might entail.
While the prime minister has stepped down, it’s not clear who will replace him – or what happens next, with seemingly no-one in charge. Some leaders, including ministers, have reportedly taken refuge with the security forces.
International Criminal Court judges yesterday began hearings to finalise charges against fugitive Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony.
Legal experts say the proceedings could act as a blueprint for other high-profile ICC suspects at large, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The ICC issued an arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin in March 2023, accusing him of the war crime of illegally deporting hundreds of children from Ukraine. The Kremlin has repeatedly denied the accusations.
Kony, the leader of the rebel Lord’s Resistance Army, is the ICC’s longest-standing fugitive. An arrest warrant was issued against him in 2005.

Deputy prosecutor Mame Mandiaye Niang said ICC prosecutors want to charge him with 39 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity, including murder, rape, using child soldiers, sexual slavery and forced pregnancy, between 2002 and 2005.
“All these crimes were committed by the LRA under the command of Joseph Kony,” Niang told the court, adding that the children of northern Uganda lived in constant fear of attack and abductions during the LRA’s “systemic violence”.
In 2022 the ICC prosecutor’s office announced that it wanted to revive the case by having confirmation of charges hearings without Kony present. After renewed efforts to find Kony failed, judges allowed in absentia hearings.
French President Emmanuel Macron named loyalist Sebastien Lecornu, a one-time conservative protege who rallied behind his 2017 presidential run, as prime minister on Tuesday, defying expectations he might tack towards the left.
The choice of Lecornu, 39, indicates Macron’s determination to press on with a minority government that stands firmly behind his pro-business economic reform agenda, under which taxes on business and the wealthy have been cut and the retirement age raised.

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to protect U.S. nationals from what he termed “wrongful detention” abroad.
U.S. Department of State, in a statement issued on Friday, threatened severe consequences for those who “wrongfully” detain Americans abroad.
“Today, President Trump signed an Executive Order that takes unprecedented action to impose new consequences on those who wrongfully detain Americans abroad,” the statement read.
“Through this Executive Order, actors designated as State Sponsors of Wrongful Detention may face severe penalties,” the statement added.
The penalties include economic sanctions, visa restrictions, foreign assistance restrictions and travel restrictions for U.S. passport holders, according to the statement.
“Like the State Sponsor of Terrorism determination, no nation should want to end up on this list.
“The bottom line: Anyone who uses an American as a bargaining chip will pay the price.”

The High Commissioner of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to Nigeria, Retired Major General Sohail Khan, has called on Pakistanis to reaffirm their dedication to building a stronger, more innovative and prosperous nation.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte yesterday defended the ongoing plans for possible deployment of European troops in Ukraine following a potential ceasefire with Russia.
Ahead of a meeting of Ukraine’s Western allies in Paris later yesterday, Russia again rejected the deployment of any NATO troops to Ukraine to monitor a potential peace deal.
“Why are we interested in what Russia thinks about troops in Ukraine?” Rutte said in response at an event organised by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in Prague.
Ukraine is a sovereign country, he said, and it is not up to Russia to decide on a troop presence.
The so-called Coalition of the Willing is due to discuss how to ensure the security of the country attacked by Russia after a possible end to the war at the meeting in Paris.
The focus is on strengthening the Ukrainian army, but also on political and military commitments in the event of renewed Russian aggression.
Rutte is expected to join the Paris meeting hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer via video-link.
According to military sources, a troop presence by European NATO countries in Ukraine could primarily involve a large-scale training mission.
