EU, FG unite to fight against transnational crime

The European Union Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation (Eurojust) and the Federal Ministry of Justice (FMoJ) have united to fight transnational organised crime.

The EU and FG signed a Working Arrangement to strengthen cooperation on Transnational Organised Crime in November 2023, leading to the visit by EUROJUST to discuss the implementation of the Arrangement.

Speaking at a High Level Meeting, which is a follow-up to the Working Arrangement, held in Abuja, the Vice-President of EUROJUST, Mr José de la Mata Amaya, expressed the need for mutual commitment to work together on this complex phenomenon.

He noted that crime was borderless, and as such would require effective collaboration among states and agencies to put criminals behind bars.

The meeting, hosted by the EU Delegation, had in attendance the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ambassador Gautier Mignot, Nigerian Solicitor General, Beatrice Jedy Agba, the EU Member States Ambassadors,  representatives of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC),

The High Level Meeting will open dialogue towards a better understanding of the EU, its Member States and the Nigerian legal systems, identify challenges and areas where collaboration can deepen or become more effective.

“Nigeria needs the support and assistance in the cases with the member states of the European Union, and indeed the member states of the European Union also need to strengthen and to enhance their cooperation with the authorities of Nigeria”, de la Mata said.

He added, “We meet today to know better each other, to define which best practices are to enhance this cooperation, to identify also challenges, issues or problems that may exist in the member states where we are assisting the Nigerian authorities, but also in Nigeria where they assist the member states.

“And the main aim of this endeavour will be to improve the number of cases that we have together, because that will mean that we are providing more assistance to the judges and prosecutors in the member states and also in Nigeria when it comes to their trans-border investigations.

“We have reached a conclusion and we know for sure that if you want to do something, you can do it alone, but if you want to go farther, you have to go in a team. And that’s what we want to achieve with this working arrangement, to work like a team, respecting of course all the international conventions, multilateral and bilateral, that are in place when it comes to international legal cooperation, and respecting of course the guarantees and rights of the person under investigation, but together as a team, as colleagues, doing that we will achieve a criminal justice goal that is finally our very common goal.”

Meanwhile, EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ambassador Gautier Mignot, expressed the joint willingness of Nigeria, the U and its Member States and the UN agencies, to fight transnational organised crime, in a more coordinated and efficient way.

He thanked the UNODC, which has been very instrumental in helping to start this cooperation and also facilitating the implementation of the Working Arrangement.

The Solicitor-General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mrs Beatrice Jeddy-Agba, further stated: “This arrangement is primarily aimed at strengthening our joint efforts against transnational organised crimes, with particular focus on enhancing seamless judicial cooperation across international borders in the interest of international criminal cases.

“We hope that this will broaden our collective vision and illuminate pathways for reinforced cooperation in international criminal justice matters between Nigeria and the European Union.

“We hope also that we are able to achieve our goal of practically implementing the working arrangement, hoping that it operates smoothly and efficiently for the effectiveness of tackling criminal activities between Nigeria and Europe, among others.”

Eurojust is an agency of the European Union for international legal cooperation in criminal matters and is integrated by judges and prosecutors, whose task is to provide assistance, support, facilitate criminal cases, and criminal investigations that are handled by judges and prosecutors in the EU Member States.

  • FG to sign over 30 MoUs as Nigeria-Brazil strategic dialogue opens June 23

FG to sign over 30 MoUs as Nigeria-Brazil strategic dialogue opens June 23

…agriculture, energy, defence, creative economy, top bilateral agenda

The federal government of Nigeria is set to sign more than 30 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Federative Republic of Brazil as both countries convene for the second session of the Nigeria-Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism (SDM) in Abuja from Monday, June 23, 2025.

The three-day event is expected to bring together high-level delegations from both countries, with the Brazilian Vice President, Geraldo Alckmin, leading a powerful trade and diplomatic mission to Nigeria.

The dialogue is aimed at expanding bilateral cooperation across key sectors, including agriculture, energy, defence, innovation, and the creative economy.

Speaking at a press conference at the State House, Abuja, on Wednesday, the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President (Office of the Vice President), Senator Ibrahim Hadejia, described the visit as a landmark moment in Nigeria’s international diplomacy and a reflection of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to strategic global partnerships.

In a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications Office of the Vice President Stanley Nkwocha, Hadejia stated “this session is particularly important as it aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on economic revitalisation, increased foreign direct investment, and repositioning Nigeria on the global stage.”

He added that the government would seize the opportunity to unlock new investment flows, facilitate technical cooperation, and expand platforms for strategic business engagement between both nations.

Among the highlights of the dialogue is the Nigeria-Brazil Business Forum, scheduled for June 25.

The forum will feature sector-specific engagement platforms, including a Digital Trade Room aimed at deepening trade ties and leveraging the strengths of both countries in digital innovation.

According to the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, the SDM, first established in 2013, has gained new momentum following President Tinubu’s official visit to Brazil in late 2024.

She described the upcoming forum as a springboard for engaging over 400 million combined consumers across both markets.

“Brazil’s global leadership in digital inclusion and Nigeria’s thriving fintech landscape offer powerful synergies. We are introducing platforms to support scalable innovation and robust trade linkages,” Oduwole said.

On the agricultural front, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, said discussions have progressed significantly in areas such as animal genetics, soya bean production, and agricultural research.

He confirmed that several MoUs have been endorsed under the SDM to support Nigeria’s food security objectives.

Kyari also highlighted the Federal Government’s intention to accelerate the Green Imperative Programme (GIP) – a $4.5 billion agricultural mechanisation scheme targeting the establishment of project delivery offices in all 774 local government areas.

“The SDM offers us a fast-track mechanism to deepen our strategic partnership with Brazil, particularly in agricultural mechanisation and research,” Kyari noted.

The Minister of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Hajiya Hannatu Musawa, emphasized the importance of cultural and creative diplomacy.

She revealed that her ministry would sign MoUs aimed at fostering Afro-Atlantic cooperation in the creative and tourism sectors.

“Nigeria and Brazil share a rich cultural heritage. We intend to build on this to expand opportunities in film, fashion, music, and tourism,” Musawa said, expressing optimism about the economic potential of the sector.

From the foreign policy perspective, Ambassador Janet Olisa, Director of Regions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and representative of the Foreign Minister, affirmed the dialogue’s significance in advancing Nigeria’s economic diplomacy.

“We’re focusing on our strengths – agriculture, defence, health, and the creative economy. Nearly 30 MoUs are under active negotiation. Some will be signed during this dialogue, and others during President Tinubu’s upcoming state visit to Brazil,” Olisa disclosed.

She stressed that all ministries have been tasked with delivering meaningful outcomes, noting that the SDM is not merely symbolic but designed to produce real investment agreements.

Marion Moon, Technical Assistant to the President on Agriculture and Executive Secretary of the Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit (PFSCU), provided insights into the sub-national component of the dialogue.

She confirmed that Nigerian states will host Brazilian investors in locations such as Lagos, Kebbi, Edo, Plateau, Nasarawa, and the Federal Capital Territory.

“This isn’t just a national-level event. States have been actively engaged to ensure that Brazilian investors can see opportunities across the country,” Moon stated.

The Nigeria-Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism is being coordinated by the Office of the Vice President and is seen as a cornerstone of the administration’s drive to deepen South-South cooperation and attract transformative investments.

  • Trump: U.S. knows where Iran’s Khamenei is hiding

Trump: U.S. knows where Iran’s Khamenei is hiding

    • President urges Iran’s unconditional surrender

President Donald Trump said yesterday the United States (U.S.)  knows where Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is hiding during the Israel-Iran conflict but doesn’t want him killed “for now”.

Trump urged, in a social media posting, Iran’s unconditional surrender as the five-day conflict continues to escalate.

“We know exactly where the so-called ‘Supreme Leader’ is hiding,” Trump added. “He is an easy target, but is safe there – We are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now. But we don’t want missiles shot at civilians, or American soldiers. Our patience is wearing thin.”

Trump’s increasingly muscular comments toward the Iranian government come after he urged Tehran’s 9.5 million residents to flee for their lives as he cut short his participation in an international summit to return to Washington for urgent talks with his national security team.

The comments about Khamenei and calls for surrender came shortly after Trump in a separate posting touted complete control of the skies over Tehran.

Trump in the opening days of the conflict rejected a plan presented by Israel to kill Khamenei, according to a U.S. official familiar with the matter, who was not authorised to comment on the sensitive matter and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The Israelis had informed the Trump administration that they had developed a credible plan to kill Khamenei. But White House officials informed the Israelis that Trump opposed such a move.

Trump returned to the White House from his abbreviated trip to the Group of Seven summit in the Canadian Rockies early  Monday at a moment of choosing in his presidency.

Israel, with five days of missile strikes, has done considerable damage to Iran and believes it can now deal a permanent blow to Tehran’s nuclear programme — particularly if it gets a little more help from the Republican president.

But deepening American involvement, perhaps by providing the Israelis with bunker-busting bombs to penetrate Iranian nuclear sites built deep underground or offering other direct U.S. military support, comes with enormous political risk for Trump.

Trump, as he made his way back to Washington, expressed frustration with Iranian leaders for failing to reach an agreement.

He said he was now looking for “a real end” to the conflict and a “complete give-up” of Tehran’s nuclear programme.

“They should have done the deal. I told them, ‘Do the deal,’” Trump told reporters on Air Force One. “So I don’t know. I’m not too much in the mood to negotiate.”

Trump, who will hold a Situation Room meeting with advisers  yesterday, has been gradually building the public case for a more direct American role in the conflict. His shift in tone comes as the U.S. has repositioned warships and military aircraft in the region to respond if the conflict between Israel and Iran further escalates.

Asked about his evacuation comment, Trump told reporters: “I just want people to be safe.”

Trump said he wasn’t ruling out a diplomatic option and he could send Vice President JD Vance and special envoy Steve Witkoff to meet with the Iranians.

He also dismissed congressional testimony from National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard, who told lawmakers in March that U.S. spy agencies did not believe Iran was building a nuclear weapon.

Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger citizens to continue enjoying free movement, says ECOWAS

    • N196.8b projects launched to support peace, security, trade

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) yesterday said it has agreed to maintain the status quo regarding free movement and free trade with the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) countries (Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso) until further notice, despite their withdrawal from the regional bloc.

The three countries officially pulled out of the regional body in January 2025 due to a fallout occasioned by the undemocratic change of government in the three countries.

The three countries have since set up the Alliance of Sahel States, with their own common travel document.

Both parties in April commenced negotiations on the future engagement, with an agreement expected to be reached at the end of the negotiations.

But before then, ECOWAS Commission President, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, said the status quo on free movement of persons and goods and also trade will be maintained until a new  agreement is in place.

Touray said the ECOWAS is more concerned about the welfare of the citizens.

He spoke at the launch of ECOWAS four initiatives aimed at enhancing trade in the West Africa Region.

The initiative is in conjunction with UNIDO, GIZ, the EU, the German and Spanish Governments, Expertise France, AECID, FIAP,  and ITC.

Flagging off the launch, Touray said the agreement was reached at its meeting in Accra, Ghana in April 2025.

He said: “We have agreed until we adopt a new agreement, we will maintain the status quo in all areas.”

There was no immediate comment by the Israeli military on the incident.

Witnesses said Israeli tanks fired at least two shells at thousands of people awaiting aid trucks.

Nasser Hospital wards were crowded with casualties, and medical workers ad to place some on the ground and in corridors due to the lack of space.

The incident was the latest in nearly daily mass deaths of Palestinians who were seeking aid in past weeks, including near sites operated by the U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.

Local health officials said at least 23 people were killed by Israeli gunfire on Monday as they approached a GHF aid distribution site in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.

China will roll out measures on market access, inspection – Yan Yuqing

The Chinese Consul General in Lagos, Yan Yuqing, has said China would roll out measures on market access, inspection, quarantine, and customs clearance to boost trade in goods, enhance skills and technical training, and expand the promotion of quality products.

Yuqing disclosed this in her speech titled, “Seizing the Zero-Tariff Opportunity to Unlock New Momentum in China-Nigeria cooperation.”

She stated, “China is ready to, through negotiating and signing the agreement of China-Africa Economic Partnership for Shared Development, expand the zero-tariff treatment for 100 percent tariff lines to all 53 African countries having diplomatic relations with China, or all African countries except Eswatini, to welcome quality products from Africa to the Chinese market.

“For the least developed countries in Africa, on top of the zero-tariff treatment for 100 percent tariff lines announced at the 2024 Beijing Summit of FOCAC, China will roll out measures on market access, inspection and quarantine, and customs clearance to boost trade in goods, enhance skills and technical training, and expand the promotion of quality products”.

Yuqing added, “China is ready to work with Africa to deepen the implementation of the ten partnership actions for modernization, prioritize cooperation in such key areas as green industry, e-commerce and e-payment, science and technology, and artificial intelligence, and enhance cooperation in security, finance and the rule of law, to promote high-quality development of China-Africa cooperation.

“And during the meeting with Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar in Changsha, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi also expressed China’s readiness to sign a common development economic partnership agreement with Nigeria to fully leverage the zero-tariff policy, share development opportunities, and pursue mutual rejuvenation.

“These new measures are not only a continuation of the long-standing China-Africa friendship, but also a vivid demonstration of President Xi Jinping’s policy of ‘sincerity, real results, affinity and good faith’ in China’s relations with Africa. They are practical actions by China to sow the seeds of hope with our African brothers and sisters, and to jointly embrace the spring of development.

“At a time when the world is far from peaceful, the frequent occurrence of unilateralism, protectionism and economic bullying has created severe difficulties for the economic and social development and the improvement of livelihood in African countries and other developing countries.

“China and Africa, as the largest developing country and the continent with the largest number of developing countries, are the backbone of the Global South. The more uncertain and volatile the international situation becomes, the more China and Africa must strengthen unity and resilience, stand firmly on the right side of history, and play a proactive role in guiding the direction of our times.

” To this end, on behalf of China, Foreign Minister Wang Yi proposed five key initiatives for promoting high-quality China-Africa cooperation: First, upholding mutual assistance and serving as defenders of solidarity among Global South countries.

Second, upholding openness and serving as advocates for international free trade.

“Third, upholding mutual benefit and win-win results and serving as partners in global development cooperation.

Fourth, upholding fairness and justice, and serving as defenders of an equitable international order

“Fifth, upholding exchanges and mutual learning, and serving as promoters of the diversity of world civilisations.

“Last week, I concluded a fruitful visit to Abia State and Port Harcourt, which further strengthened my confidence in the China-Nigeria journey toward modernisation. During the visit, I met with Governor Alex Otti and jointly attended the Together Fight Against Hunger charity donation ceremony, where the Chinese Consulate General, in collaboration with Chinese enterprises, provided support to low-income communities. I was truly gratified to see that the public welfare efforts initiated by the Consulate are reaching more places and benefiting more people across our consular district.”

Iran among ‘worst rogue states in the world,’ says German minister

Iran is “one of the worst rogue states in the world,” German Education Minister Karin Prien said on Tuesday.

Tehran “has explicitly and repeatedly threatened Israel’s right to exist for decades and does not recognise Israel,” Prien said in Berlin.

“And if it really is the case that Iran now has a nuclear weapons capability or is very close to it, then Israel naturally has a right to self-defence.”

Prien, the deputy chairwoman of the centre-right Christian Democratic Union, is the first openly Jewish female minister in German history.

She has recently given several interviews on the subject of her family history.

She said she hoped Iran’s capabilities could be reduced very quickly so that the threat to Israel and the entire world from a “criminal system” would soon come to an end.

Kenyan police fire teargas at protesters after death of blogger in custody

Kenyan Police fired teargas at protesters in the capital Nairobi on Tuesday after the death of a blogger in police custody cast a spotlight on alleged extrajudicial killings by security forces.

Reuters witness also reported that clashes also broke out in downtown Nairobi as unidentified motorcyclists beat up protesters, dispersing them.

Local broadcaster NTV showed video of the bikers shouting, “No protests.”

Amnesty International’s Kenya chapter, in a post on X, referred to the presence of dozens of motorbikes, with two hooded passengers “whipping protesters and members of the public.”

Reuters could not immediately ascertain who the motorcyclists were.

Kenya’s police spokesperson could not be immediately reached for comment on the clashes.

Albert Ojwang, a 31-year-old teacher and blogger, was declared dead earlier this month, just two days after he was arrested, with police initially saying he had committed suicide.

Kenya’s police chief later apologised after an independent autopsy found Ojwang’s wounds pointed to assault as the cause of death.

President William Ruto said Ojwang had died “at the hands of the police,” which was “heartbreaking and unacceptable.”

Ojwang was arrested as part of an investigation triggered by a formal complaint by deputy police chief Eliud Lagat, according to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority watchdog.

The demonstrations over Ojwang’s death reflect wider public concerns that nothing has changed one year after more than 60 people were killed during protests initially sparked by proposed tax increases.

Kenyan broadcaster Citizen TV said demonstrations also erupted in Kenya’s second-largest city, Mombasa, and showed protesters shouting slogans and holding placards saying “Stop killing us” and “Ruto must stop killing us.”

Earlier, hundreds of people demonstrated in Nairobi over the blogger’s death, with vehicles set ablaze and police firing teargas at protesters. It was not certain who had set the vehicles on fire.

Lagat, the deputy police chief, said on Monday he had stepped aside temporarily, pending the completion of an investigation into Ojwang’s death.

Two senior officers and a closed-circuit television (CCTV) technician, who had been called to dismantle the CCTV at the police station, have been arrested in connection with the investigation.

  • China accuses Trump of fuelling Iran-Israel conflict

China accuses Trump of fuelling Iran-Israel conflict

China has accused US President Donald Trump of exacerbating tensions between Iran and Israel, following his dramatic call for Tehran residents to “immediately evacuate” amid rising hostilities.

The criticism came after Israel launched a surprise aerial assault on multiple targets across Iran last week, intensifying a long-running shadow conflict between the two rivals. Israel claimed the strikes aimed to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons—an allegation Tehran continues to deny.

The renewed violence has jeopardized ongoing nuclear negotiations and raised fears of a broader regional war. In response, Trump took to his Truth Social platform with a stark warning: “Everyone should immediately evacuate!”

Reacting to his comments, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun condemned the rhetoric, saying:
“Fanning the flames, pouring oil, making threats and mounting pressure will not help to promote the de-escalation of the situation, but will only intensify and widen the conflict.”

Guo called on all relevant actors—especially nations with “special influence” over Israel—to act responsibly and take urgent steps to calm tensions and prevent further escalation.

Meanwhile, China’s embassy in Israel issued a separate alert on Tuesday, urging its citizens to leave the country “as soon as possible” due to the deteriorating security situation following the exchange of heavy strikes between Israel and Iran.

“Chinese nationals should exit the country through land border crossings if they can ensure their safety,” the embassy stated via WeChat, recommending evacuation toward Jordan.

The embassy noted that the conflict “continues to escalate,” citing widespread damage to civilian infrastructure and a growing number of casualties.

  • China-Africa Cooperation: Writing a New Chapter of Win-Win Cooperation Together

China-Africa Cooperation: Writing a New Chapter of Win-Win Cooperation Together

In today’s wave of globalization, international cooperation is crucial for the development of all countries. As an important force among developing countries, China and Africa are closely cooperating to write a new chapter of mutual benefit and win-win outcomes. Recently, the Fourth China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo was held in Changsha, Hunan, once again attracting the world’s attention.

The expo was unprecedented in scale, with participation from 53 African countries, 11 international organizations, 27 Chinese provinces and municipalities, and over 4,700 Chinese and African enterprises, business associations, and financial institutions, attracting more than 30,000 participants. When Africa’s agricultural products, beauty and fashion items, and jewelry traveled across the ocean to meet China’s daily necessities, engineering machinery, and medical devices, it was not only a feast of goods but also a vivid embodiment of the multifaceted efforts of China-Africa cooperation.

From a trade perspective, China has maintained its position as Africa’s largest trading partner for several consecutive years. In 2024 alone, the China-Africa trade volume reached a staggering $295.6 billion, setting a historical record for four consecutive years. The China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo has played a key bridging role in this process, greatly promoting the diversification of trade. High-quality specialty agricultural products and handicrafts from Africa have continuously entered the Chinese market, enriching the choices available to Chinese consumers.

At the same time, China’s technological products and machinery are also very popular in the African market, injecting strong momentum into Africa’s development. For example, the demand for Ethiopian coffee in the Chinese market has been steadily rising, providing vast market space for Ethiopian coffee exporters. Additionally, China’s 5G technology and photovoltaic power station projects have taken root in many parts of Africa, significantly promoting the development of Africa’s digital economy and green energy transition.

In the investment sector, over the past five years, direct investment from Chinese enterprises in Africa has averaged over $3 billion annually. Many Chinese companies have actively responded by diversifying their investments across Africa, establishing numerous industrial parks that have created a large number of job opportunities and promoted industrial clustering and upgrading. Some enterprises have also engaged in infrastructure construction, improving transportation and communication conditions in Africa and laying a solid foundation for the continent’s long-term development.

From infrastructure construction to the digital economy, from green development to financial cooperation, the fields of China-Africa cooperation are continuously expanding and deepening. In terms of infrastructure, China has assisted Africa in constructing numerous roads, railways, ports, and other projects, greatly improving connectivity across the continent. In the digital economy sector, Chinese companies have built multiple large data centers in Africa, accelerating the continent’s digitalization process. In green development, the photovoltaic power stations built through China-Africa cooperation provide clean electricity to millions of households in Africa, aiding the continent’s green transition.

It can be said that the prospects for China-Africa cooperation are bright. With China proposing to implement zero tariffs on 100% of tariff items for the 53 African countries with which it has diplomatic relations, the threshold for African products entering the Chinese market will be further lowered, bringing more opportunities for African enterprises.

The cooperation between China and Africa is a model of South-South cooperation, based on equality, mutual benefit, and win-win collaboration. In this era filled with challenges and opportunities, China-Africa cooperation not only aligns with the fundamental interests of both sides but also sets an example for many developing countries. We look forward to China-Africa cooperation achieving new and brilliant accomplishments, jointly building a better future.
