    The United Kingdom (UK) has recorded 5,847 migrant arrivals in 2025, including 335 on Sunday who crossed the English Channel, thus setting a new record for the first three months of the year.

    Provisional Home Office figures have shown that the migrant arrivals are already higher than the 5,435 that arrived in January, February, and March of 2024.

    This is a record for the first quarter of a calendar year.

    It was also well above the 3,793 arrivals in the first three months of 2023 and the 4,548 in the equivalent period in 2022.

    The cumulative total for 2025 of 5,847 people is up 36 per cent on this point last year (4,306) and 59  per cent higher than at this stage in 2023 (3,683).

    This is according to the PA news agency analysis report.

    The figures came as the government vowed to crack down on people smuggling with plans to introduce new criminal offences and hand counter-terror-style powers to police and enforcement agencies to curb Channel crossings.

    Last week, the French coastguard confirmed two migrants died in two days attempting to cross the Channel on Wednesday and Thursday.

    Commenting on the issue, Politico wrote: “Members of Congress and national security staffers were stunned Monday by a bombshell report that top Trump administration officials — including the vice president and Defence secretary — discussed war plans in a Signal group chat.”

    Rep. Pat Ryan (D-NY) said: “Only one word for this: FUBAR. If House Republicans won’t hold a hearing on how this happened immediately, I’ll do it my damn self.”

    Goldberg, a longtime Washington D.C. journalist, found himself added to the conversation.

    “It should go without saying—but I’ll say it anyway—that I have never been invited to a White House principals-committee meeting, and that, in my many years of reporting on national-security matters, I had never heard of one being convened over a commercial messaging app,” he wrote in The Atlantic.

    The shocking story shows operational details were unwittingly revealed. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, a former Fox News host, is now under the microscope over the egregious failing.

    Goldberg noted that “Pete Hegseth, the secretary of defence, had texted me the war plan at 11:44 a.m”. The bombs started dropping in Yemen around 2 p.m.

    “The most dangerous enemy of Israel is Benjamin Netanyahu,” protester Moshe Haaharony, 63, told the Reuters news agency.

    “Benjamin Netanyahu for 20 years doesn’t care about the country, doesn’t care about the citizens.”

    “I’m worried for the future of this country. And I think it has to stop. We have to change direction,” said one protester, Avital Halperin.

    Netanyahu has dismissed accusations the decision was politically motivated, but his critics have accused him of undermining the institutions underpinning Israel’s democracy by seeking Bar’s removal.

    Israel’s Supreme Court issued an injunction on Friday, temporarily freezing the dismissal.

    Netanyahu and Bar have been at loggerheads for months amid tensions over a bribery investigation focused on the prime minister’s office and recriminations over the failure to prevent the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attacks on southern Israel.

    Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday that instructs the US education secretary, Linda McMahon, to start dismantling the Department of Education, seemingly attempting to circumvent the need to obtain congressional approval to formally close a federal department.

    The administration may eventually pursue an effort to get Congress to shut down the agency, Trump said at a signing ceremony at the White House on Thursday, because its budget had more than doubled in size but national test scores had not improved.

    The federal government does not mandate curriculum in schools; that has been the responsibility of state and local governments, which provide 90% of the funding to schools. At the White House, Trump nevertheless repeated his campaign promise to “send education back to the states”.

    But the executive order targeting the education department, which has been expected for weeks, directed McMahon to take all necessary steps to shut down key functionalities. Trump added at the signing ceremony that he hoped McMahon would be the last education secretary.
