Arrest warrant issued for South Korea’s impeached President Yoon

A South Korean court on Tuesday issued an arrest warrant for suspended president Yoon Suk Yeol, the Yonhap news agency reported.

The Corruption Investigation Office is investigating Yoon for unexpectedly imposing martial law on Dec. 3.

The office applied for an arrest warrant on Monday after Yoon ignored three summonses to appear for questioning.

Yoon is the first sitting South Korean president to face an arrest, according to Yonhap.

Once Yoon has been taken into custody, the office has 48 hours to decide whether to apply for an additional warrant to detain him for longer or release him, Yonhap reported.

However, the Presidential Security Service has blocked investigators from entering the presidential office compound and Yoon’s official residence to carry out court-approved searches, citing military security concerns.

Yoon’s botched attempt to institute martial law shocked the nation but was rescinded just hours later following massive public resistance.

South Korea has been in political crisis ever since.

The National Assembly voted to impeach Yoon on Dec. 14, and the Constitutional Court has launched the relevant proceedings to take a final decision on whether the assembly’s vote is constitutional or not.

Choi Sang Mok has been acting president since Friday, after lawmakers voted to impeach then-acting president Han Duck Soo, barely two weeks after Yoon was removed from the presidency.

Yoon has labelled his political opponents “anti-state forces” and said that he made the declaration of martial law to protect the nation.

Two plane crashes in one day claim 180 lives

    • Nigeria condoles with South Korea over 179 deaths

    • Weather causes disruption of flights at UK airports

Two planes crashed in different parts of the world yesterday.

The unusual situation claimed no fewer than 180 lives.

The crashes occurred in South Korea and Australia.

The South Korean accident was the worst in which 179 died.

There were two survivors on the plane carrying 181 passengers.

The Jeju Air plane crashed-landed on its belly, caught fire and skidded off the runway at Muan International Airport in South Korea.

The accident is described as one of the country’s worst aviation disasters.

The accident occurred yesterday as the Jeju Air flight, carrying 175 passengers and six crew from the Thai capital Bangkok, landed at Muan International Airport about 290km (180 miles) Southwest of the capital, Seoul.

The South Korean National Fire Agency confirmed that of the 179 people who died, 85 were women, 84 were men and 10 others whose genders were not immediately identifiable were also killed.

Two people were fortunate to have survived with critical injuries.

Five children all aged fewer than 10, including a three-year-old boy, are the youngest victims of the horror plane crash.

The crash is believed to have been caused by “contact with birds, resulting in malfunctioning landing gear” as the plane attempted to land at the airport.

“Images which have been on the media here do appear to show the plane landing on its belly, skidding along the runway, followed then by a huge explosion,” the report stated.

The report added that only 65 victims out of 179 have so far been identified because of the huge fire on the plane.

The South Korean Government has declared seven days of national mourning over the plane crash.

The plane, a 15-year-old Boeing 737-800 jet, was reported to be carrying two Thai passengers and the rest were believed to be South Koreans.

Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has expressed deep condolences to the families of the crash victims.

Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been ordered to investigate if Thai passengers were on the plane and to provide “assistance immediately.”

South Korea’s acting President Choi Sang-mok ordered “all-out efforts for rescue operations” at Muan Airport.

Jeju Air, one of South Korea’s largest low-cost carriers, set up in 2005 issued an apology for the crash, saying it would “do everything in our power in response to this accident.”

The crash is the first fatal accident for Jeju Air, though in August 2007, a Bombardier Q400 operated by the airline and carrying 74 passengers came off the runway due to strong winds at the Southern Busan Gimhae Airport, resulting in a dozen injuries.

The incident came as South Korea is embroiled in a huge political crisis triggered by President Yoon Suk Yeol’s stunning imposition of martial law and ensuing impeachment.

The Jeju Air flight was returning from Bangkok.

Jeju Air chief executive Kim E-Bae said the airline extended its deepest condolences and apologies to those affected.

“Currently, the exact cause of the accident has yet to be determined, and we must wait for the official investigation by government agencies,” Kim said in a statement.

“Regardless of the cause, I take full responsibility as the chief executive,” he stated.

In New South Wales, Australia, one person died and another is fighting for life in hospital after a light plane crash near Yamba, on New South Wales North Coast.

In a statement, NSW Police said the aircraft was taking off from a private airfield on Palmer’s Island when it crashed.

Only two people were on board at the time.

Rescue operators rushed to the airfield to find the pilot, believed to be a man in his 60s, dead at the scene.

A spokesperson for NSW Ambulance said that the other occupant, a man believed to be in his 30s, was treated for “significant head, spinal and arm injuries.”

In Canada, an Air Canada plane skidded off the runway at Halifax Stanfield Airport and caught fire.

The Air Canada aeroplane veered off the runway at Halifax Stanfield International Airport with a broken landing gear.

According to reports, the aircraft skidded down the runway and caught fire after touching down with broken landing gear.

The aircraft, operating as flight AC2259 and run by PAL Airlines, was said to be arriving from St. John’s when it experienced a significant malfunction during landing.

Although there were no fatalities recorded, this marks the third aviation incident in one day.

Also, KLM Airlines’ Boeing 737-800 made an emergency landing at Oslo Torp Sandefjord Airport in Norway, after a hydraulic failure forced the aircraft to divert.

The plane, which was carrying 176 passengers and six crew members, landed safely but skidded off runway 18 during the rollout and came to a stop in the grass near a taxiway.

The cause of the incidents was still being investigated.

Meanwhile, flights have been cancelled and delayed at the United Kingdom’s busiest airports due to heavy fog.

Flights at Stansted Airport were reportedly affected by the weather conditions on Saturday and yesterday. There were also delays at Heathrow, Luton and Manchester Airports.

The Federal Government commiserated with South Korea and others affected by crash incidents yesterday.

It expressed its condolences to the Government and People of the Republic of Korea, Canada, Norway and Australia.

A statement by the Acting Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, stated that Nigeria sympathises with the Government of South Korea and the families of the victims of the plane crash.

The statement reads in part: “The Federal Republic of Nigeria wishes to express her sincere condolences to the Government and People of the Republic of Korea and other countries affected by the unfortunate crashes yesterday.”

  • Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter dies at 100

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter dies at 100

Thirty-ninth United States (U.S.) President Jimmy Carter has died at the age of 100, the Carter Center said last night.

Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work.

He died peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family, the human rights organisation he founded said in a statement.

Carter was the longest-living president in US history, having celebrated his 100th birthday on October 1.

His death came over a year after his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, passed away in November 2023, and more than a year and a half after the ailing former president entered hospice care, in February 2023.

“My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love,” Chip Carter, the former president’s son, said.

His death came just three weeks before Donald Trump is due to begin his second term in the White House. The Carter Center said in October that Carter, a life-long Democrat, had cast his mail-in ballot for Kamala Harris, Trump’s opponent.

Carter’s own presidency was marred by spiralling inflation and a hostage crisis in Iran. The Democrat lost re-election to Republican Ronald Reagan in a landslide in 1980.

In the decades after he left office, however, Carter won widespread admiration for his extensive humanitarian work at home and abroad. He founded the Carter Center, the influential pro-democracy and human rights organisation, and became one of the most prominent volunteers for Habitat for Humanity, the affordable housing charity.

Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 “for undertaking peace negotiations, campaigning for human rights and working for social welfare”.

Carter faded from public view in the years leading up to his death. He visited Washington in 2018 to attend the state funeral of George HW Bush and endorsed Joe Biden for president in 2020 with an audio message that was played at the Democratic National Convention.

President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden visited the Carters at their home in 2021. The Bidens attended a memorial service for Rosalynn Carter, alongside the former president, at Emory University in Atlanta in November 2023.

News of the former president’s death came more than a year and a half after the Carter Center said in February 2023 that “after a series of short hospital stays,” the former president had decided to forego medical treatment and enter hospice treatment at home. Carter had undergone cancer treatment and suffered several falls in recent years.

Nigeria expresses concern over post-election violence in Mozambique

The federal government has expressed concern over the escalating post-election violence in the Republic of Mozambique.

Violence in the capital city of Maputo, and other major cities like Beira, and Nampula, resulted in the death of over 121 persons with over 380 injured.

The violent protests erupted after the Constitutional Council confirmed Daniel Chapo of the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) as the winner of the presidential election with 65% of the votes. The results were rejected by the leader of the opposition party.

In a statement yesterday, the federal government urged  the aggrieved political parties  to explore appropriate legal means to seek redress.

  • China-Nigeria bilateral trade surpasses $17.1 Billion in October 2024 – Yuqing

China-Nigeria bilateral trade surpasses $17.1 Billion in October 2024 – Yuqing

The Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, Ms. Yan Yuqing, has announced that bilateral trade between China and Nigeria exceeded $17.1 billion as of October 2024.

Highlighting the strengthened economic ties, Yuqing noted improvements in the trade structure between the two nations.

She also acknowledged the active participation of tens of thousands of Nigerian entrepreneurs in major trade events, including the Canton Trade Fair and the China International Import Expo.

These insights were shared in her article titled “China and Nigeria Join Hands to Write a Glorious Chapter of Friendly Cooperation in 2024.”

Yuqing emphasised that throughout 2024, China and Nigeria maintained steadfast support for one another, fostering mutual benefits and achieving win-win outcomes in their collaboration.

Yuqing said: “The consular district of the Chinese Consulate General in Lagos covers 20 states in the southern part of Nigeria, which are economically developed, rich in natural resources, and have broad prospects for development.

“Over this year, in addition to promoting the deepening of economic and trade, education, medical and health cooperation between Lagos State and China’s Jiangxi Province and Qingdao City, I have also visited Ogun State several times and travelled to Edo State, Ekiti State, Ondo State, and Cross River State. By strengthening cooperation in industrialisation, agricultural modernisation, and talent development, we have deepened the sister city relationships between Edo State and Fuzhou City, and Ondo State and Linyi City.”

On education, Yuqing stated that “Over the past year, we have worked closely with the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Afe Babalola University (ABUAD), the University of Port Harcourt, and others, facilitating direct dialogues between Chinese and Nigerian counterparts and expanding the space for academic research. We have established the Lagos Forum in collaboration with the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), the Africa China Economy Magazine, and the Institute of African Studies at Zhejiang Normal University.”

“Over the past year, China and Nigeria have achieved much in the field of infrastructure and engineering contracting. In January this year, I had the honour of witnessing the largest container ship in Nigeria’s history docking at Lekki Deep-sea Port. This marks the largest deep-sea port in West Africa, built by a Chinese company, as a new global “business card” for Nigeria.

“In February, I witnessed the launching ceremony of the first phase of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line Project and the signing of the agreement on its second phase, which once again demonstrated that the Nigerian side had the same trust in Chinese-funded enterprises as in the past,” she added.

  • China’s Technological Boom: The Inevitable Result of Unity and Effort

China’s Technological Boom: The Inevitable Result of Unity and Effort

Recently, China has been receiving a series of positive news in the field of science and technology. For example, on December 20, Chinese scientists made a breakthrough by revealing the ancient magnetic field information on the far side of the moon through the study of lunar soil; on December 18, the Jiangmen Neutrino Experiment (JUNO) in China reached a key milestone of “liquid infusion”; and on December 13, China achieved a breakthrough in “flash iron-making” technology, which can shorten the iron-making process to seconds.

It can be said that China’s rapid development and abundant achievements in the field of technology are truly remarkable. From 2022 to 2024, China has experienced a “technological boom,” with innovation occurring at an accelerated pace.

Behind this boom is the active promotion of the Chinese government. The Chinese government has always placed technological innovation at the core of its national development strategy, especially in fields such as artificial intelligence, big data, and quantum computing. A large number of supportive policies have been introduced, providing a strong institutional guarantee and financial support for technological innovation.

In addition, China’s capability for independent innovation has been a key factor in the country’s technological “explosion.” In recent years, Chinese companies have made significant progress in fields like chip manufacturing, high-end equipment manufacturing, quantum communication, and aerospace technology. For example, Huawei’s 5G technology, quantum computing technology, and China’s space program all demonstrate the country’s independent innovation capacity in high-tech fields.

Furthermore, China’s vast market demand provides broad application scenarios for technological innovation. The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence, big data, and automation technologies in industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and finance has further driven the development of these technologies. At the same time, China’s tech giants such as Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent have increased investments in new technologies and research and development, accelerating the implementation and application of these technologies through competition between enterprises.

Of course, aside from the aforementioned objective factors, there are also lesser-known reasons behind this. One of them is the recent shift in global talent movement, with many top scientists choosing to come to China. These scientists include not only those of Chinese descent but also many from the United States, Japan, and Europe.

What many people do not realize is that the research environment in many Western countries has been deteriorating rapidly in recent years. For instance, Charles Lieber, the world leader in nanomaterials, is one of the top scientists in his field. Yet, despite his prominence, he left the U.S. and moved to China. The reason is somewhat absurd. He had collaborated on a research project with an institution in Wuhan, China, and was later caught by the FBI, who accused him of espionage and charged him with treason, threatening him with the death penalty.

Although he eventually avoided the death penalty after extensive legal maneuvers, the incident had a huge impact on him. He realized that staying in the U.S. could put his life in danger, so he decisively moved to Hong Kong to continue his research.

Now, with China’s growing strength and sufficient research funding, along with equipment that is among the best in the world, the country has become an attractive destination for scientists from around the world. According to statistics, there are currently more than 10,000 foreign experts working in China on scientific research, significantly contributing to China’s technological development. Thus, China’s technological “explosion” is not only the result of the efforts of the Chinese people but also due to the gathering of world-class talent from across the globe.

Looking ahead, with China leading the way and the joint efforts of many of the world’s top scientists, humanity’s technological development is expected to usher in a brighter future.
