Why UK general elections are always on a Thursday

The 2024 general election is under way after polls opened at 7am on Thursday.

People across Britain are heading to the ballot box to have their say on who will be their new MP and which party will rule Westminster.

The election is the first in nearly five years. Polling stations will close at 10pm on Thursday before the exit polls are announced and a winner is expected to be named in the early hours.

The result will not be known until Friday morning, but one thing we know is that elections are always held on Thursdays.

There is no law mandating that elections are held on Thursdays; however, this has been the custom since early in the 20th century, which typically includes voting in local and general elections — and by-elections for individual seats.

Historically, Thursdays were market days in towns and villages, which meant more people were out and about and therefore likelier to vote.

There’s also a view that voting on a Thursday gives a smoother transition of power. The count happens overnight and a winner is announced on Friday. The leader has the weekend to pick his or her cabinet, settle into Downing Street, and prepare to brief civil servants on Monday morning.

How long have UK general elections been held on Thursdays?
The last general election that wasn’t held on a Thursday took place on a Tuesday in October 1931.

Before then, the day varied for elections — although it was always a weekday.

In 1935, the election was held on a Thursday — and it has been that way ever since.

According to surveys, Sunday is the most common day for elections worldwide.

South America, plus large swathes of Europe including Italy, France, Belgium, Spain and Greece all hold their elections on Sundays.

Canada and the Philippines hold their elections on Mondays, the US on Tuesdays and the Netherlands, South Africa and South Korea on Wednesdays.

Iran is another country that always holds its elections on a Thursday, whereas Qatar, Australia and New Zealand hold theirs on Saturdays.

Jubilation in Imo as Uzodimma wins second term

    • Election, a vindication of my 2019 victory, says governor
    • We’ll challenge  victory in court, says  LP

Hundreds of supporters of Governor Hope Uzodimma trooped into the state capital yesterday to celebrate his victory in last Saturday’s governorship election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had in the morning declared Uzodimma, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the polls after he scored 540,308 votes to defeat his closest rivals, Senator Samuel Anyanwu of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) and Senator Athan Achonu of Labour Party (LP) who came a distant second and third, with 71,503 and 64,081 votes respectively.

Seventeen political parties contested the election, but the APC, the PDP and the LP were the most popular candidates.

Although Uzodimma coasted to victory from early results from polling units, wards and local government collation centres late Saturday and early Sunday morning, Owerri Metropolis was calm until the INEC chief returning officer for Imo and Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti State, Prof. Abayomi Fasina declared him winner around 10.20 am.

The governor also won in all the 27 local government areas of the state leaving none of his opponents any chance.

No sooner had the returning officer made the announcement than the city erupted in jubilation as motorcyclists and motorists were seen driving in mad celebration.

At the INEC office along Port Harcourt Road, Owerri, hundreds of APC supporters led by Chinasa Nwaneri, Barr. Ennyinna Onuegbu and the deputy speaker of the state house of assembly, Amarachi Iwuanyanwu, among others, trooped to the area and matched f from street to street in celebration.

The jubilant APC supporters, who clutched the party’s flags and brooms, chanted victory songs as they moved along the streets.

They were joined by various groups of convoys who came from nearby parts of the state to join the victory march from Port Harcourt Road to Bank Road, Wetheral Road, Douglas and Okigwe roads

A shop owner at the IMSU Junction, Darlington Opara, told our correspondent that he had expected the governor’s victory because of his boldness in tackling the challenges facing the state, particularly the issues of insecurity and infrastructure.

He said: “I had always known that he would win. First I voted for him because of his boldness in tackling insert facing the state. Without the manner he is going about it, Imo would have become overrun by hoodlums. So, I congratulate him and wish that he would focus on bringing Imo back to the good old days.”

Another resident, Victor Ibeabuchi said he expected Uzodimma’s victory because there was no formidable opposition against his election. His words: “Anyone who is in Imo State and knows the candidates well wouldn’t know that somehow, it was only Governor Hope who contested the election. The other candidates did not show much determination to wrestle power from Uzodimma and I’m saying this with due respect to the efforts made by the PDP and LP candidates.”

They hoped that the governor would heal the state of the destructions that had befallen it and fast-track development of the state by making the business environment clement for residents and prospective investors.

PDP stakeholders protest members’ disenfranchisement in Nembe-Bassambiri

Stakeholders of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) have embarked on a peaceful protest over the alleged disenfranchisement of their members in Nembe-Bassambiri during Saturday’s off-cycle governorship election in Bayelsa State.

The party stakeholders took the protest to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) head office at Swali in Yenagoa yesterday morning.

The protesters were received and addressed by the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr Obo Effanga.

After being addressed, the protesters stopped their demonstration and turned the barricaded road by security agents into a carnival.

Many of them were seen dancing away as they awaited the outcome of the results collation.

The security around the INEC office is as impregnable as different arms of security agents were present. People without any means of identification were turned back from accessing the INEC office.

The Bayelsa State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Biriyai Sambo SAN, who spoke to journalists said they were at the INEC office to register their protest on the disenfranchisement of party members in the Nembe-Bassambiri in Nembe local government area of the state.

He said: “Precisely on November 10, most of our members in about 60 buses left Yenagoa for Nembe with escorts. When we got there, the SWAT team was blocking the entrance into Nembe with other All Progressives Congress (APC) acclaimed youths and they said we should come down.

“Immediately, one of our boys, his name is Barrister Akili, came down, and they manhandled him. He just escaped by a whisker. Thereafter, they started threatening them, up to the extent that they threw tear gas at us. They said they could not come in, most of them were scared for their life, so they had to leave.

“But subsequently, we now saw that there was no voting, there was no election in Nembe-Bassambiri, Constituencies 2 and 3. We now found out that results started coming out on social media; results that were uploaded on the BVAS, the kind of results that were outrageous. We don’t know where they were coming from.”

“We are here to appeal to INEC; we are not coming to discourage INEC. We just want them to follow the rule of law and ensure that they do what is right in line with the President’s resolve that there have to be free and fair elections in this country.

“They would have allowed everybody to go into Nembe-Bassambiri and vote; one man, one vote. But this one none of us went in there to vote. Only the APC people were there, they manipulated everything and then started posting results on social media.

“We don’t want that to continue. We are here to appeal to INEC that they should look into those results and do what is right in line with the rule of law. There has to be a fair play in our electioneering process.”

Addressing the protesters, the INEC REC, Mr Obo Effanga represented by the head of Voter Education and Publicity, Mr Wilfred Ifogah, said the Commission is not joking with the Bimodal Voter Automated System (BVAS).

He assured them that the units where the BVAS were not used would be cancelled.

He said: “No BVAS, no election in that particular unit, and it will be cancelled, so that is the assurance I am giving you right now.

“This protest definitely will get to the REC. I want to thank you all and assure you that other processes will continue at the collation centre. It will also be presented before the Collation Officer.”

  • Arrest sponsors of electoral offences, SERAP tells INEC

Arrest sponsors of electoral offences, SERAP tells INEC

Human rights and transparency watchdog, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has asked the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to promptly establish a joint, credible, transparent, effective, and broad-based investigation into allegations of electoral bribery and violence in the off-cycle governorship elections in Kogi, Imo and Bayelsa states.”

SERAP urged Prof Yakubu to “identify, arrest, name and shame suspected perpetrators and their sponsors of these grave human rights crimes, and ensure their effective prosecution, regardless of their political status or affiliations.”

SERAP also urged him to “disclose the spending details on the governorship elections in Kogi, Imo and Bayelsa states, including the specific amount spent to conduct voter and civic education and activities carried out in these states.”

In a letter dated November 11, 2023, and signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation said if INEC is to live up to its constitutional and statutory responsibilities, it must take bold and effective measures to combat the culture of impunity for electoral bribery and violence in the country.

SERAP said the recurring cases of electoral bribery and violence make a mockery of Nigeria’s electoral process and participatory democracy. The letter reads: “There are reports of specific cases of pre-completed result sheets including in five local government areas of Kogi State – Adavi, Ajaokuta, Ogori/Magongo, Okehi and Okene.

“Suspected political thugs reportedly harassed journalists covering the governorship election in Omuma Community in Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State. INEC official in the Oguta Local Government Area (LGA) of Imo State also alleged that some men invaded her polling unit and carted away result sheets.”

“According to a report by the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), there were several reports of electoral violence and vote buying across the three states. For example, there were reports of incidents in PU 1, Ward 8 and PU 11, Ward 1 in Sagbama LGA in Bayelsa West.”

“In Bayelsa Central, vote trading was reported in PU 16, Ward 6 in Yenegoa LGA, PU 22, PU 30 and 31, Ward 13 in Southern Ijaw LGA with reports of voter inducements ranging from N5,000 – N22,000, and items such as wrappers and rice were also reportedly shared to buy votes.

“In Kogi, there were reports of vote buying in PUs 004, 038 and 039 in Ward A of Lokoja LGA, where party agents were allegedly sharing out money to voters upon confirmation that they voted for their party candidates.

“In Imo, the two major parties’ agents reportedly engaged in vote buying, sharing between N2000 to N3000. INEC officials were reportedly bribed. Electoral violence was reported in Dekini where a thug was reportedly shot and killed by military officials while fleeing in an attempt to snatch a ballot box.

“INEC presiding officer was also reportedly abducted in Bayelsa while on his way to the Registration Area Centre – 06 (Ossioma) in Sagbama Local Government Area.” There are reports of thugs attacking several polling units in the three states.”

It continues: “INEC must acknowledge its limitations and now embrace a transparent, credible, inclusive and broad-based investigation into the allegations of grave electoral offences in Kogi, Imo and Bayelsa states.

“Electoral integrity is critical to a legitimate democracy. When the integrity of that process is compromised, the legitimacy of our government and the public confidence in our public institutions is seriously undermined.

“Reports of grave electoral offences in Bayelsa, Kogi and Imo states have shown that INEC and politicians have learnt little or nothing from the well-documented problems during the 2023 general elections.

“We would be grateful if the recommended measures are taken within seven days of the receipt and/or publication of this letter. If we have not heard from you by then, SERAP shall take all appropriate legal actions to compel INEC to comply with our request in the public interest.

“The right to vote is fundamental and is the essence of a democratic society, and any restrictions on that right strike at the heart of representative government. Nigerians should have the final say in the election of governmental officials.

“Persistent cases of bribery and violence in the country’s elections gravely violate Nigerians’ right to vote, which is central to the effective participation of every citizen.

“Unless there is a transparent, effective, credible, inclusive and broad-based investigation into these allegations and perpetrators and their sponsors are named and shamed and brought to justice, impunity for these electoral crimes will continue. And citizens will continue to lose confidence in the electoral process.

“Nigerians have the right to know how INEC is spending public funds in the discharge of its constitutional and statutory responsibilities. It is in the public interest to publish the details of spending on governorship elections in the three states.

“According to our information, the governorship elections in Kogi, Imo and Bayelsa states witnessed cases of electoral offences including electoral violence, vote-buying, conspiracy, and undue influence.”

“The proposed joint investigation should comprise of INEC, anti-corruption and law enforcement agencies, the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, the National Human Rights Commission, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), and independent leaders and citizens’ groups from Kogi, Imo and Bayelsa states.

“Electoral bribery and violence and other electoral offences undermine the ability of INEC to discharge its responsibilities under Section 153 of the Nigerian Constitution and paragraph 15(a) of the third schedule of the Constitution, and the Electoral Act.

“Electoral bribery and violence and other electoral offences reportedly committed during the off-cycle governorship elections in the three states are contrary to the Nigerian Constitution, the Electoral Act and international standards.

“The Nigerian Constitution provides in Section 14(1)(c) that, ‘the participation by the people in their government shall be ensured under the provisions of this Constitution.

“Sections 121 and 127 of the Electoral Act prohibit electoral bribery and undue influence before, during and after any election. Section 145(2) provides that, ‘a prosecution under this Act shall be undertaken by legal officers of the Commission or any legal practitioner appointed by it.

“Under section 2(a) and (b), the commission ‘shall have power to conduct voter and civic education and to promote knowledge of sound democratic election processes.

“The crisis confronting the country’s elections and lack of public trust and confidence in the electoral process can be addressed if impunity for electoral bribery and violence is combated through a transparent, credible and effective investigation and prosecution of suspected perpetrators.”

    • NPC threatens to name uncoorperatives parties

Governorship candidates in Kogi, Imo and Bayelsa States yesterday signed the peace pact.

However, the event, an initiative of the National Peace Committee (NPC), witnessed low turnout in Imo State.

In Kogi, 18 political parties participating in the November 11 governorship election signed the peace accord deal.

Abubakar, represented by Cardinal John Onaiyekan emphasized the importance of honoring the peace accord before and during the election.

He expressed concern over the recurrent ritual of signing peace accords without tangible results, stressing the need for candidates to demonstrate seriousness and commitment.

The situation is not the same in Imo as NPC threatened to name political parties and their candidates who have refused to sign its peace accord latest on Friday.

Chairman of the committee, and former Head of State, Abdulsalam Abubakar represented by Gen. Martin Luther Agwai (rtd) disclosed this during a signing of a peace accord of the governorship candidates and their parties in Imo State on Wednesday.

Agwai while answering questions from newsmen on why most of the candidates did not show up for the event said: “One challenge that we have here is that all of them did not come, but the good people of Imo State are watching.

“By Friday, we would announce to the good people of Imo State the political party that has refused to sign and we would let the people know which party wants peace and the party that does not want peace. Let the people now make a choice to vote for the party that want peace and tranquility”, Agwai said.

Earlier during the ceremony, the Inspector General of Police, (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun assured the electorates of adequate security before and after election.

The IGP represented by DIG Frank Mbah further disclosed that 80 percent of its personel have already been deployed for the election while promising that before its commencement another 20 percent would be deployed.

The INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu represented by the National Commissioner Southeast region, Kenneth Ukeagu urged the political parties’ candidates to play by the rules.

  • Why the pendulum will swing in favour of Uzodimma

Why the pendulum will swing in favour of Uzodimma

Come Saturday, November 11 electorates in Imo State will be trooping out in their numbers to vote for their governor in one of the three off-circle elections to be conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

As early as June this year, no fewer than 16 candidates have been cleared by the electoral commission to jostle for the Imo state Government House with the current governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma.

Political watchers however have trimmed the race down to be between four major candidates following their current level of popularity and the growing acceptability of their political parties.

No doubt the race is between the incumbent governor and the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Hope Uzodimma and candidates of the main opposition parties, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Action Alliance (AA), Major General Lincoln Ogunewe, Rtd. and Labour Party (LP), Athan Achonu.

Though, the political pedigrees of all these candidates speak volumes of their capacities and capabilities, however, the APC candidate, stands out as the leading star in the pack.

Political analysts in the state have argued that the people of the state would not want to gamble with the huge opportunities created for development in Imo State under Uzodimma. They are quick to refer to the good road networks in the state, the new face of Owerri, the capital city of the state, human development programmes and policies, as well as the progressive change in the socioeconomic history of the State. It is on record that his performance outweighs previous administrations in the state.

Uzodimma who is currently the Chairman South East Governors’ Forum, recently emerged as the Chairman Progressives Governors’ Forum (PGF) and is seeking re-election from a vantage position, having served the state and distinguished himself to the point of being fished out by his colleagues, not only from his geopolitical zone but by all the APC governors to lead them speaks volume of the leadership capacity of the former lawmaker, which the state can leverage on for further progress and development

Many political watchers across the country have also acknowledged  Uzordimma’s capacity and competence in the handling of local and national matters. Within the last three years towering influence in national affairs has further repositioned the entire Southeast region in the mainstream of national politics. His deft political moves have attracted the region’s key political portfolios and infrastructural development. This feat the region can not afford to slip off its grip on the altar of party politics.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has appealed to voters in Kogi, Imo and Bayelsa states to vote candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in governorship elections coming up in the three states on Saturday.

Atiku, in a statement on Wednesday, noted that although there was a groundswell of dissatisfaction and resentment about how the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) “walked back on the promise of transparency in the last general elections”, such shortcoming should not be enough reason to give up on democracy.

The candidate of the PDP in the last presidential election urged the electorate in the three states to derive wisdom in the immortal saying of a former US President, James Monroe that; “the best form of government is that which is most likely to prevent the greatest sum of evil.”

Continuing, Atiku said: “Our objective of defeating anti-democratic elements in our polity cannot be successful if we refuse to go out en-mass to cast our ballot on Election Day.

“And, that is why I am appealing to the good people of Bayelsa, Imo and Kogi states to come out in large numbers this Saturday to vote for the candidates of the PDP in those respective elections.

    Kogi PWD endorses Ododo

The People with Disabilities (PWD) in Kogi State have endorsed the governorship candidate of the ruling All Progressive Congress Ahmed Ododo as the next governor in the state.

The people with disabilities said they decided to endorse Ododo because of the high level inclusion of persons with disabilities being enjoyed under the Governor Yahaya Bello-led APC administration.

Speaking on behalf of the PWDs, Mr. Ibrahim Arome said the group resolve was a product of massive consultation, noting that “Persons with Disabilities in our ways of life don’t just throw support behind people anyhow but we do take our time to access many things”.

“We are glad to make it known to the entire Kogites, Nigerians and the world the reasons why we cannot afford not to support APC and its candidate.”

The PWDs said the structure of APC as a political party from the national, state, and local government and down to the ward level makes constitutional provision for the inclusion of persons with disabilities (PWD), pointing out that no political party in Nigeria has such constitutional provisions.

“APC-led government under the leadership of former President, Muhammodu Buhari established the Disability Commission in 2018 as the first of its kind since the advent of democracy in Nigeria.

“The APC led government in Kogi State under the leadership of Alhaji Yahaya Bello, has also demonstrated a high level of inclusion of persons with disabilities.
