  • Exercise peaceful, says NSCDC

As far as the Commandant of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Osun State Command Aboluwoye Akinwande is concerned, the governorship poll was peaceful.

Akinwande told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) the election was so far peaceful, adding that NSCDC officers were also on ground in all the polling units across the state to maintain peace.

“All the officers have been deployed to their various polling units, divisions and the state in general.

“They are already on ground and the election has started. While I was on patrol this morning, I saw a lot of people going to their various polling units and the polling units I passed through were very peaceful.

“There is no disturbance,” he said.

He however noted that there were certain pockets of challenges that had to do with the political status of most of the contestants.

“Let me start with APC; the APC candidate, who happens to be the former Chief of Staff of the state.

“The PDP candidate also happens to be a federal senator. The SDP contestant happens to be a former senator and a former deputy governor and he is still very active in politics.

“Also the ADP candidate happens to be a former Secretary to State Government of Osun State before he decamped to ADP.

“He has also been a grassroots politician from ACN to AD to even APC and now to ADP. So he is a grassroots man.

“So we have all these people contesting and when they are contesting, you will find out that there might be some pockets of challenges, ”he said.

Akinwande also noted due to some of these challenges, some thugs had been arrested, while some have been charged to court.

According to him, these are some of the challenges we are having but thank God the challenges have been solved.

Akinwande however said that a huge number of NSCDC officers had been deployed to Osun to ensure peaceful conduct of the election.

“Aside from Osun, we have officers and men from Ogun, Lagos, Ondo, Kwara and Kogi, who are actively involved in this gubernatorial election; so you could imagine the type of deployment.

“There are also deployments from the National headquarters. We have from the Directorate of Rescue Management, Peace and Conflict and Kennel.

“We have officers from Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Squad, Chemical Biological Radioactive and Nuclear Explosives, among others.

“All these are just to tell you about the deployment and how active the NSCDC has been in ensuring a peaceful election in the state,” he said

  • Aragbiji advises indigenes against wild jubilation

The Aragbiji of Iragbiji, Oba Abdulrosheed Olabomi, has expressed optimism about Gboyega Oyetola’s victory in the Osun State governorship election.

Oyetola, who is the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election, hails from Iragbiji.

The monarch, who cast his vote in front of his palace at 11:17 am,  told our correspondent he was not surprised at the massive turnout of his subjects in the election because Oyetola has been committed to the development of the town and welfare of indigenes.

Olabomi explained that Oyetola has been in the forefront of human capital development of the town in recent decades, offering scholarships to indigent students, supporting community projects and sponsoring free health services to the masses.

“Even before he became the Chief of Staff, he had been very supportive.

“There has never been a time he held back in his responsibilities to the town as a major indigene. He has impacted almost every home in Iragbiji, helping young people to secure employment, supporting students and helping many people with health challenges,” Olabomi said.

The traditional ruler revealed that reports from other parts of the state confirmed that there was large turnout of voters, which he believed would be in favour of his subject.

Based on his expectation and the enthusiasm of his subjects, he advised them against wild jubilation when Oyetola is hopefully declared winner.

He advised them to celebrate moderately, reminding them the candidate is a gentleman with Iragbiji known for peace.

  • We saw PDP, SDP, ADP buying votes, say local observers

Some local observers yesterday revealed how they saw three of the participating political parties buy votes in some communities.

The observers disclosed this during their visit to the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Gboyega Oyetola in Iragbiji.

While commending the APC for not participating in vote- buying, the leader of the team, Comrade Richards Adebayo, said his members saw members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) offering N1, 500 to induce voters.

He alleged African Democratic Party (ADP) offered N2, 000 and Social Democratic Party (SDP) offered N3, 000 to voters.

He commended the electoral exercise, describing it as smooth and peaceful.

Adebayo said his team members observed massive turnout by voters in virtually all the communities where they monitored the election.

They included Osogbo, Iwo, Iragbiji, Ede and Ejigbo.

He described the enthusiasm of voters as ‘unbelievable,’ adding that people voted without any fear or intimidation.

He also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the smooth conduct of the election, saying the entire exercise recorded a marked improvement over the 2014 exercise.

He said they saw voters who were already at polling units as early as 6:00 am with smiles on their faces.

The observers urged Oyetola to support a strong electoral process if he wins in the race, stressing that it is one of the pillars of democracy.

Oyetola commended the observers for taking time out to see things for themselves instead of relying on what he called ‘jaundiced reports.’

He also hailed the peaceful environment the election held and the enthusiasm of voters.

He pointed out that the improvement in the electoral system confirmed that democracy was growing in Nigeria.

  • Adeleke: Victory assured if…

After casting his vote, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ademola Adeleke, has assured his supporters that, if he is not rigged out by the authorities in charge of the process, he is sure of victory. Adeleke who arrived exactly 8am at his polling unit 009, Ward 2, Abogunde/Sagba registration area, Ede North, was the first to vote at the unit.

The Card Reader Machine initially had difficulties authenticating his fingerprints but after about five minutes, he succeeded in doing his accreditation.

The PDP flag bearer, who voted at about 8.07am, told reporters afterwards that so far everything was proceeding normally and that if it continues that way he is sure of victory.

He said attempts were made to frustrate his bid, to destabilise him ahead of the election but everything failed in the end.

  • Osun polls: Oyetola, Adeleke in tight race

Early returns from the  Osun State governorship election last night indicated a tight race between the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Mr. Isiaka Oyetola and Senator Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Oyetola had the upper hand in 13 of the 30 local government areas, according to results handed over to party agents at the various polling stations by INEC.

Adeleke trailed in the second position after winning in 11 LGAs while Senator Iyiola Omisore of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) was the preferred candidate in only four LGAs.

Alhaji Moshood Adeoti of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) secured only two LGAs.

The official result is to be released by INEC.

Each of the leading candidates won in his unit and local government area.

Oyetola won in Boripe, Adeleke in Ede, Omisore in Ile Ife and Adeoti in Iwo.

It was however a bad outing for Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, a former governor of the State and the prime mover of the Olusegun Obasanjo-inspired African Democratic Party’s (ADC) candidate, Alhaji  Fatai Akinbade, lost in Oyinlola’s ward at Okuku.

Don’t tamper with our winning results – PDP

Moment after the close of voting yesterday, the Ademola Adeleke Campaign Organisation issued a statement warning against manipulation of the results of the poll.

The will of the people must be respected, it said in the statement by its Director of Publicity, Mr. Olawale Rasheed.

He said: “as results are been collated across the state, we demand utmost fair play and transparency from the electoral body.

“We are watching and monitoring closely. Under no circumstance should the collation process be manipulated.

“Our agents and leaders are on their toes armed with relevant results and forms. The will of the people must be respected.

“We task INEC and security agencies to obey the directive of President Muhammad Buhari who had ordered that the Osun electoral process should never be manipulated by federal or any related agencies.

“We call on local and international observers to take note of the ongoing process and assist the people of Osun state to realise the supremacy of their electoral will.

“Our people should also be ever vigilant to protect their votes and their aspirations for better life.”

    Voters turn out high

Voters’ turn out for the election was generally high across the state.

Security was also tight to discourage disruption of the election and to apprehend violators of the electoral process.

Accreditation and voting commenced at about 8 am simultaneously in many polling units

In Osogbo, the state capital, many of the residents had trooped to their polling units as early as 6.am.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said more than 300 voters were on the queue  at Osunbukola Ward 10 Unit 003 Polling Unit in Egbedore LGA by the time voting got underway.

There were also some policemen and NSCDC personnel at the polling unit.

The Accreditation Officer at the unit, Mashood Samson, said  the exercise was hitch-free with the card readers working perfectly.

An official of the Transition Monitoring Group, Dr Abiola Afolabi, told NAN the exercise in the units visited was orderly.

At the Ward 5 Unit 1 Polling Unit in Osogbo Local Government, more than 300 voters were on the queue for accreditation and voting which started at 8.10.am.

An international observer from the National Democratic Institute who simply identified herself as Miss Courtney said the exercise so far had been transparent, an assessment corroborated by Busayo Soyebi of the Centre for Transparent Advocacy.

At the Osogbo Polling Unit 2 Ward 5 inside Osogbo Grammar School, no fewer than 200 voters were sighted waiting to be accredited.

In Iragbiji, the hometown of the APC candidate, Gboyega Oyetola, there was also a massive turnout.

At the polling units in LA primary School Popo, Ward 1,  Oja Oba Town Hall, Ward 2, Osolo Hall, Ward 1 and Oke-Osun, Ward 1B, many of the voters arrived as early as 7:00 am to check their names on the voters’ list.

At exactly 8:24, accreditation and voting started at Polling Unit 2, LA Primary School Popo.

Some voters, however, complained that they could not find their names on the voters’ register.

The INEC Presiding Officer, Mr Lawal Adewale, said they had no challenges at the voting unit as materials arrived early.

He said those complaining they could not find their names on the voters’ register were not at the polling unit to vote.

More than 200 voters were at the polling unit made up three voting points to cast their vote.

In Ede, the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Adeleke,  voted at Ward 2 Unit  9 at Sagba-Abogunde at about 8:01 am after an initial hitch with the card reader.

“The card reader took a lot of processes before it started working and I hope it is not the same in other polling units,” he said.

The police spokesman, Acting DCP Jimoh Moshood, had said four unarmed policemen and two others from other security agencies would be on duty at each voting point throughout the state.

He also said the Police Mobile Force (PMF) headed by a very senior officer will provide security at the RAC, Super RAC and collation centres.

  • Why Ooni did not vote, by aides

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, did not vote because he sees all the governorship candidates in Osun State as his subjects, his aides have said.

The Lowa Adimula of Ife, High Chief Adekola Adeleye, who said he is the Ooni’s second in command “to the left” explained the paramount monarch cannot be seen to be taking sides with any of the candidates.

Our correspondent observed though there was a polling unit by the Ooni’s palace he did not come out to vote.

“It’s not good for the Ooni to vote for any candidate. If he must vote, it will be for all the candidates because he’s the father of all.

“But that’s not possible so the kingmakers advised him not to vote.  “He cannot take sides. All the candidates are Ooni’s subjects and so it’s better for a father to be neutral when his children are in a contest,” Adeleye told our reporter. Ooni’s traditional Aide De Camp said the royal father only blessed all the candidates, wished them well and prayed for a peaceful election.

  • Omisore confident of winning ‘despite irregularities’

Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in Osun State, Dr Iyiola Omisore, expressed confidence that he would win the election despite irregularities.

Addressing newsmen after casting his vote, he claimed he got reports from across the state that a lot of things were going wrong.

He said the card readers failed to work in several places while voting materials were yet to arrive in some as at 11am.

He said unless the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) acted quickly to resolve the issues, the process would be totally flawed.

“I cannot adjudge the process fair until these things are addressed,” he said.

Asked about his assessment of the exercise so far, Omisore said:

“The process is very bad. It’s not encouraging.

“There are complaints everywhere. At least two APC thugs in uniform have been arrested.

“The card readers are very, very slow; extremely slow. I’ve got reports from various parts of the state where there are no card readers at all; or if there are, they’re malfunctioning.

“In parts of the South, up till now (around 11.30 am), they have not seen electoral materials or officers. So, the irregularities are much.

“No card reader in Egbedore; Ife South no materials up till now; Osogbo Wards 4 and 5, no materials, no card reader; fake police men and APC thugs arrested; vote buying.

“If we make complaints to them, they should rectify them.”

Omisore urged his supporters to remain steadfast and to resist vote buying, which he said they were already doing.

“Unless INEC addresses these issues, we’ll lose confidence in the process. For now they have not done well.”

Asked if he was still confident of winning despite the challenges, he said: “All over the state, SDP is the popular party everyone is voting for everywhere.”

Omisore voted in Unit 003, Ward 1, located in St Gabriel Primary School, Moore, Ile-Ife.

He voted at exactly 11.16 am following arrival at the unit at about 11.04am.

He was accompanied by his aides with supporters chanting “Abere Straight!” in reference to the government house.
