Sickle Cell: NGO bankrolls free medical tests, drugs for 700 school children

The CrimsonBow Sickle Cell Initiative, a faith-based non-governmental organisation creating support for sickle cell patients, has bankrolled free medical tests and screening for about 700 school children in Agege Local Government Area. Miss Timi Edwin, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer, disclosed this at the “Project Keep A Warrior Warm 9.0” organised by the initiative in Agege and environs as part of efforts to address the challenges of sickle cell in the society.

“This is a medical outreach and Christmas party for the children in Agege Local Government Area. This is our 23rd local government areas that we are coming to. We are here today to make this children have a lot of fun while also using the medium to teach them on the importance of knowing their genotype. We are here to also letting the children know how to take care of themselves, especially those who are sickle cell; while also inviting them to our programmes. For the medical tests today, no fewer than 700 children benefitted in our free genotype, eye and dental tests while patients also got free drugs,” the founder said.

According to her, the initiative has been taking such advocacy from one local government to another in Lagos State and other neighbouring states to stem the spread of sickle cell diseases. Edwin added that the participants were also given food items, clothes, beverages, toilets and other palliatives as well as medications for patients. “We run clinic every months were we provide medication to sickle cell patients. Here today, many patients were also provided with their medications,” she said.

She said that the Primary Health Board also collaborated with the initiative in bringing Polio and COVID-19 vaccines as support to the programme. Edwin, who stressed the need for the Federal Government to implement new-born genotype screening policy and ensure adequate funding and research to mitigate spread of sickle cell, said that the initiative invited school children to the party in order to reach out to them.

The founder commended all the sponsors called on the government, corporate organisations and well-meaning Nigerians to support the fight against sickle cell. According to her, a lot of patients have died while many are still dying because of wrong or error in diagnosis of genotype, hence the need for government to be stricter in regulating spread of sickle cell. “There is a lot more to do to stop bringing into the world children with sickle cell to mitigate pains and agonies of patients. Sickle cell is our plague, we need to cure it,” she added.

Also speaking, Mrs Christiana Bakare, the Project Director, who noted that more children benefitted than were they planned for, said that the event was part of the ‘catch them young’ efforts of the initiative. She urged parents not to hide their sickle cell children as the disease was not a death sentence. In his welcome address, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, the Wife of the Lagos State Governor, said that she identified with the project meant “to educate people on Sickle Cell prevention and management in lower cadres of society.”

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by Mrs Abimbola Odunmbaku, the Wife of the Chairman, Ojodu LCDA described the gesture as laudable. She said: “It is commendable that this sort of project was initiated, while it is more gratifying that it has been sustained from the 1st phase to the 9th phase that we are all gathered to celebrate today. I am particularly thrilled with the free genotype tests, eye tests, dental check-ups, and other blood tests for women and children as part of efforts to ensure that residents are supported to be healthy and armed with the required knowledge to embrace healthier life choices.”

Sanwo-Olu recalled that earlier in 2022, the CrimsonBow Sickle Cell Initiative organised also roundtable advocacy meeting aimed at changing individual behaviours, societal norms, and policies regarding sickle cell prevention. “Without any iota of doubt, this project will help a great deal to reduce the number of people affected by the disease in the future. To ward off the threat of the disease, I have always emphasised the need for awareness. As a matter of fact, awareness is key in helping to nip it in the bud. Therefore, all critical stakeholders must continue to play up and scale up advocacy to ensure that the larger percentage of the people is adequately armed with the required information to prevent it,” she said.

‘Nigeria has only 250 kidney specialists’

Dr Ade Faponle, a Consultant Nephrologist, Zenith Medical and Kidney Centre, Abuja, has disclosed that Nigeria has only 250 Specialists in the area of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Faponle said this in Ilorin during a paper presentation at the 2022 Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Association of Resident Doctors, University of Ilorin (ARD-UITH) branch. The expert spoke on: “Kidney Protection: Evolving and Emerging Threats – Call to Action.”

He lamented the dearth of CKD specialists in the country, adding that they are not enough to man the growing number of people with the disease in Nigeria. He rated CKD as the fifth common causes of death worldwide, leading to a global health crisis. “About 1/8th of the world population have a kidney disorder. One in every five men and one in every four women have CKD,” he said.

Faponle described CKD as a slow and progressive loss of kidney function over several years, adding that eventually, a person may develop kidney failure. He underscored the importance of the kidney as they carry out essential functions of removing toxins and bad products from the body. “They are considered mighty organs, as they filter blood 40 times a day. No single machine can be that ultra-efficient,” he said.

NDLEA arrests 18,940 suspects, secures 3,324 convictions in 2 years

The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said it has arrested 18,940 suspects for different drug-related offences in the past two years. This was disclosed by Brig-Gen. Mohammed Buba-Marwa, the Chairman of the agency, at an award presentation in Yola on recently.

The award was conferred on him by the Adamawa Honours Society (AHS) in recognition of his outstanding service to the nation. He said the agency secured 3,324 convictions, seized 5.4 kilogrammes of different control drugs, narcotic substances and rehabilitated 3,326 drug abusers within the period under review. The NDLEA boss urged parents, community and religious leaders to upscale campaign to tame the menace, saying “drugs do not discriminate against tribe, religion or region.”

The agency, he said, recently acquired drug and the lie test kits, adding that intending couples should be tested for drug use before marriage. “Drug test will determine the innocence or otherwise of couples and save marital relationships from collapse due to drug abuse,” he said. According to him, the agency is working assiduously to achieve reduction in the supply and demand for drugs, stressing that this would greatly add value to the fight against the trend.

Marwa commended President Muhammadu Buhari for supporting the agency in the fight against illicit drugs, adding that “I also commend the Adamawa House of Assembly for enacting laws against drug related offences.” He said the award would spur him to do more and commended the organisers for finding him worthy of the award. Mr Dauda Markus-Gundiri, an official of the group, said the award was informed by Marwa’s track record in public service. He described the awardee as the true “son of the soil,” who served the nation with commitment, dedication and sincerity of purpose, considering his performances in the numerous positions held. He said the group would continue to recognise deserving individuals and groups with such gestures, especially those who served humanity selflessly.

  • Group fetes community with food items during healthcare outreach

Group fetes community with food items during healthcare outreach

Projects of Hope, a group of Nigerian medical doctors and nurses based in the United States, in partnership with Hope Ambassadors and Child Care Organisation, has feted people in Monkey Village, a community in Lagos, with food items during its medical outreach.

The group, whose vision is to support, empower and improve the lives of vulnerable and underprivileged indigenes of Southwest Nigeria, said they aim to help people transform their lives and fulfil their potential. The group, which include the President, Projects Hope, Dr. Olukemi Kuku; Mrs Adebisi Makinde-Odusola; Mrs Adenike Adeleke; Mrs Oluwakemi Subair; Dr.Olawunmi Ogunsemore; Ms Folashade Olasimbo; Mrs. Toyin Kuyoro and Mrs. Folake Anifowoshe. According to them, they would continue to mobilise other professionals in the diaspora to carry out healthcare outreach, educational/social support, food and housing, training and employment skills.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Dr. Kuku, said having already established a contact in the country, they would seek to attract more health professionals in the diaspora to come and contribute towards complementing the government’s effort in the health sector. According to her, “It is time for us to give part to society all what God has given to us to have and so we need to pay it back. We know you are now okay until your people are comfortable and that is what is prompting us to give back to rue society. Our project goes beyond just passing food to people; we hope to attract more health professionals considering our backgrounds. We are seriously looking at filling the gaps in the health sector in the country. With this we know a lot of people who do not know where to start. We are motivated to come in and fill up some holes in the sectors.”

On what specific areas in the health sector they would like to close the already existing gaps, she said the country ought to have gone beyond the point where people should be dying of certain ailments that can be handled at primary healthcare level. Responding, she said, “In basic primary healthcare, we know people do not go to hospital until they are at the point of death. They get to the hospital door and drop dead; that means they have waited too long. First they must begin to be doing the check-ups because when you hit a certain age, there are some things you should be doing, but people are not even aware. But also providing them with the equipment without first going to register for cards or pay money to have their blood pressure or sugar level.”

For Mrs. Oluwakemi Subair, a member of the group, said today’s event would help convince other health professionals in the diaspora to reconsider their belief about coming to help close some gaps in the health sector. “The reason why most of the country’s health professionals are leaving is clearly visible because government hospitals lack so many things and the doctors do not have enough equipment to do their job. For me, coming back to help the country is something I would do because we are trying to bring all our experiences together to help the less privileged in society beyond giving them food.”

For the Executive Director, Hope Ambassadors and Child Care Organisation, Mr. Taiwo Oluwu, the partnership will further help Nigerians in the diaspora see the gaps they can intervene. “These are health professionals from the United States and we are collaborating for greater growth as this is part of the Sustainable Development Goals. We know they are going to help us achieve more in the future.”

  • Christmas, the radiant star and the Great Comet

Christmas, the radiant star and the Great Comet

If you have to access a man or a woman for his or her networth, ignore the sounding brass and noise maker. Humility and unassumedness is the off shoot of greatness! Imagine what would have happened in Bethlehem on the night Baby Jesus was born if the wife of the governor of Judea had a baby in the town that night. Sirens may have been blaring and many soldiers would have barricaded several streets adjourning the hospital for security purposes. The nation’s best doctors, nurses and facilities would have been in attendance. On that day, One that one may call a co-owner of our gigantic universe, for want of the right expression, had to be born in a manger where shepherd kept and fed their sheep! Even the only signs which marked Him out as a stranger in our world remained invisible to the high and mighty of that time, including the leaders of religion who fastidiously awaited His arrival as prophesised. There was the dove, spiritually visible sign of the Holy Spirit, above the Head. The cross of Truth, the sign of God, stood behind him. Above the manger stood the star that became known as the star of Bethlehem. It was the Radiant star, which detached itself from its orign in the spiritual realms, paradise , to accompany Jesus on His mission to our earth, as a greeting from the father. Only few men on earth were called to recognise it and what it represented in the Divine Mission to the earth. The cycle of the AGE OF THE Father was closing. In its place, the cycle of the AGE OF THE SON was opening. Some day, this age, too, would close its cycle and usher in the AGE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, which, as Jesus would speak about in the course of His earth Mission, would proclaim the judgement or END TIME.  Didn’t Jesus instruct that whenever he went away, the spirit of Truth would come to remind humanity of His Message, reprove the world of sin and then proclaim the judgement?

In the age of the Holy Spirit, another Spiritual star would detach from the spiritual world in support of the Anchorage on Earth of the WILL OF GOD or justice of God, the holy spirit.  What a semblance it would be with the time of Jesus. Only a wonder in the sky when it probably would have been too late would suggest to humanity that something stupendous is going on. That wonder in the sky is the Great Comet, of which several predictions have been made, including those by Tomkay, in his wonderful book, When The Comet Runs, Prophet Ezekiel,  the Bible’s book of revelations, and in the Grail message In the Light of Truth by Abd-ru-shin.  All these revelations speak of the great star as coming from the abode of the star of Bethlehem, but much, much larger than it, standing by our sun when it enters our world, outshine our sun several times day and night and cause gravitational and other changes in the universe which would have serious influence on the earth.

Meanwhile, surrounding Baby Jesus in that manger in Bethlehem on Holy night was an Heavenly Host who accompanied Him to the earth for His mission.  Seen  by  the three wise men, what does the scenario teach us?  The “heavenly host”, comprising angels and other non-angelic beings dwelling in “heaven”, were temporarily on earth to which they accompanied Baby Jesus for a purpose.

    Bible Stories

Every Christmas season, such as this one, I loosen myself into Bible stories for whatever new deep recognitions of them I may have. This time, I return to my story of creation and the purpose of earthly existence which makes the most logical sense to me. In this story, the Creator of creation predated creation. No one has ever seen him nor will ever do. Thus, he is unsubstantiate in human understanding. From splittings of messages or knowledge passed down to the earth from the “heavens”, we can gleam the following…

    1) As the starting point of existence stands the Almighty Creator. He is divine and exists in a divine world in which the Angels also exist. It does not need anyone or anything to exist. Everyone and everything which exists needs the Creator to be. For the Creator is LIFE. No one in existence, including the angels,  has ever seen him or will ever do. Therefore, he is UNSUBSTANTIATE. The Creator dwells in the unsubstantiate part of the Divine world,  separated by a surging ocean of fire from the substantiate part where angels dwell .This ocean of fire spans distances which human understanding cannot fathom.  Angels  existed before THE FIRST creation  came into being. Logically, they were not part of creation.

    2)  Angels are Beings who could stand the pressure of the Power of the Creator only far, far from the surging oceans of fire,  where their world exists. Beings who could not withstand the pressure and the power were, literally speaking, like icecream or  ice block in the scorching tropical African sun or in a sauce pan on gas fire. They would be unconscious and exist only in seed germ status. Even the Angels cannot cross the surging ocean of fire without losing consciousness. It is all a question of energy voltage or capacity. A lower energy cannot resist a higher energy, just as the energy of a human body cannot resist high voltage electricity.

    3) We humans belong to the “SPIRIT” species in the radiations of the unsubstantiate core of the Almighty Creator. The Angels dwell in the world above ours, paradise, and belong to the Divine substantiate specie of divinity and  consciously exist where they are because they can withstand the unsubstantiate power and pressure there. Humans, too, that is the spiritual species, have the capacity for conscious existence, but only farther away from the substantiate Angels. In the process of their development in the vicinity of the Almighty Creator, they develop the longing for it.

    4)  This longing of the spiritual specie  led to the allegorical statement…”Let us Create Man In Our Own Image”…It is unfathomable that this invitation went to the Angels,  for they have nothing to do with The Will Of  God,  Who carries out His will and is known as the Holy Spirit. That is why, in the Creation story, we learn that ” the spirit of God” hovered over the land.

Sometime between the 1980s and the 1990s, the leader of one of the most popular christian sects in Nigeria announced in a front page advertisment in The Guardian newspaper that the holy spirit, and not Jesus , created the world and would come to judge it. This fits the alert of The Book of Revelations about Him “…who was, who is, and who is to come, of whom Jesus was a “Faithful Witness”. Jesus himself had suggested that “when the spirit of Truth is come, he would reprove the world of sin and proclaim the judgement.”

5)We learn the command Let There Be Light went out before the creation of man ” in the Image Of God”. The light and power of God shot through a dark and cold void  below the world of the angels to energise and warm it and bring about existence. That was the First Creation. This is the Creation of man and of paradise often spoken about.

6)Thus, in paradise, the pressure of the power of God had been sufficiently stepped down to create a kingdom or world for the spiritual specie longing for consciousness. But not all members of this spiritual specie could exist in the new kingdom given to their specie to experience life. Thus, we earth men and earth women are not the images of God in the first creation. At best, we would become, in our highest blooms, Shadows of  The  Images of God. For it was to these images that the Grace was granted to bring about the huge material worlds, Subsequent Creation, as a soil in which to sow us earthmen and women as human spirit seed germs. Why have we not wondered: Would God’s direct creation be impacted as our material world and we ourselves earth men and earth women? He is Perfection. So is the Paradise he created in which we aspire to spend eternity when we become perfect human spirits. In the state of highest perfection for our species, we would never be able to exist or to “live” in the realms of the images. Their realms are far, far above the realms we aspire to. And that was why Jesus said  that no man born of woman however great he may be, was greater than John the Baptist, an image of God called to be his Forerunner. Whenever I remember this statement, I wonder how Salome who caused the beheading of John the Baptist, and the king who ordered it to please her, would feel in the knowledge of their smallness and abuse of earthly political authority!

    Earthman

The material world  is like a soil for the planting of immature spiritual seed germs. So, we earth men and women were planted there to germinate, flower and bear  fruit. Like everything which exists, this soil has a time it came into being, a lifespan and a time it would pass away. The law of the cycle ensures that every beginning flows to an end, which is the beginning. Thus, evaporated water returns as rain, inhailed air is exhaled, blood flows from the heart and returns there. Food and water intakes, return to the soil, and night and day, like the seasons, follow this path, all driven by The Law of Motion which compels everything, even the clouds, air, sea waves etc, to be on the move. For the earth, the End Time is when its cycle would close, and it would be disintegrated, “pass away” as Jesus said, for  its primeval materials to be reconfigured into a new stronger planet.

    7) Meanwhile, the spiritual seed germs sown in the soil of matter were not maturing as planned, and the time allotted for this, was running out. They risked disintegration (spiritual or final death) in the disintegration of the earth. Lucifer, stately  and powerful archangel appointed to guide them, had caused many  to “fall” by not tending them with supporting or helpful love as commanded by the Creator, but had introduced the Principle of Temptation. This was a wrong “gardening technique” which despised the weak ones and left them to their fate in an evil sifting of the strong from the weak instead of supporting them all in Helpful  Love. Time was running out. Some souls who did not wish to perish in the oncoming disintegration beseeched the Creator for His help. Granting this prayer, the mission to the earth of the love of God was set up.

    8) All realms of existence Jubilated. A heavenly host  chosen to accompany baby Jesus to the earth was sighted by The Three Wise Men On Holy Night. They, like John the Baptist, the forerunner of Jesus,, arrived ahead of him. So did his disciples and other mission members such as virgin Mary, who would be his earthly mother, Pontius Pilate, who would be helped to earthly authority to protect him. The three wise men were blessed with the knowledge of astrology, which made them respectable, and they were endowed, also, with material wherewithal as shepherd. Actually, there were four of them, each representing one of the Four Pillars  of Creation. One had difficulty linking up with the three for their journey to Bethlehem. He arrived  after Joseph and Mary had fled to Egypt with  baby Jesus. In the fufillment of spiritual calls, no excuse such as waiting for others is a tenable excuse if failure occurs at one’s duty post. The three others made a mistake of revealing a prized creation secret, though in ignorance and joy, to King Herod, a minion of Lucifer who sought at every opportunity to abort the mission of Jesus. The early life of Jesus bore no special testimonial of his high mission, to carry the word of God among men,  to shine light  into the darkness spurned by men into the material world in order to help them find their way back home to paradise before the disintegration. Jesus would later find His disciples who, in the higher spheres of existence,  vowed to serve him on earth and, for this purpose had been annointed and prepared for the mission. He linked up with John the Baptist. The Jesus story will continue into the easter memorial all with reminisces of the snares luifer placed in the way to abort it.

Meanwhile, the story of the birth of Jesus affords us the opportunity to review our standing in Subsequent Creation  as we journey into the Age of the holy spirit, the herald of which is the great comet, and of which Jesus forewarned…” Sins against the father and the son will be forgiven, but sins against the holy spirit will not be forgiven.” Does this mean the Holy Spirit is superior to the father and to Jesus? Oh no! . In my view, it only means the Holy Spirit is the Will of God through whom he brought creation to being, administers it and will judge it. Jesus, the love of God, only came to warn us as an emergency act of Grace that danger was impending sooner than thought in the material spheres.

    The Great Comet

Memories of the radiant star should be reminders that the Great Comet is on the way. We can also call this comet the star of Bethlehem. They have the same orign, in the spiritual world, and the same content, spiritual essence, but serve different purposes. The star of Bethlehem accompanied the love of God, Jesus, to the earth as a greeting from the father, to open the cycle of the Age of the son. The great comet is coming, to close that cycle and open that of the age of the Holy Spirit, the justice of God, and usher in the millennium during which the free will of man will be  bound and only the will of God will prevail on earth. Jesus foretold it when he said, in reference to the Holy Spirit… When he, the spirit of Truth is come, he will rebuke the world of sin and proclaim the judgement.

In the book, when the comet runs, American journalist Tomkay pooled biblical and other prophesies of this comet, to which Nostradamus, too, must have made references in his predictions.

My first encounter with  The Great  Comet was In The Grail Message.  It will come to our world in a straight line from the spiritual world. Closing the cycle of the Age of The Son Of God, it would offer help for repentance and forgiveness to no fewer than three major sets of persons…those, such as in Christian churches, who have distorted the pure and true teaching of Jesus to serve their cravings for earthly power and influence ;those who made the mission of Jesus not only traumatic for him but, also, inconclusive , and those called ones who pledged loyalty to the mission in the higher realms but, on earth, forgot their callings. Such groups included the four wise men, Judas Is Cariot and Pontius Pilate whose wife warned him three times to let Jesus go but feared for his job as Governor of Judea. There are predictions, too, that, before it arrives in our atmosphere, the Great Comet will hold the earth in its grip, suck up the waters and cause several earthquakes. I always remember the warning that All That is dead in Creation will be awakened to pass judgement on themselves. By this is meant that none of us would be able to hide from the judgement radiations of The Great Comet. It will be all about human nature, even those weaknesses or strengths we may no longer remember are part of our make up…envy, adultery, fornication, murder, intimidation, greed etc. They will be roused and energised so we can impact them and, in doing so, encounter persons more destructive than we are. When I hear of man aged 75 or older defiling girls aged 10 or younger, this is the picture I remember. When Russia and Ukraine are at war and the United States is backing Ukraine, that, also, is the picture. When we are hungry and cannot feed ourselves despite endowment with huge, rich arable land, that is the picture. When the world’s economy goes down, that is it. We are told all that is false in creation will inevitably collapse as the free will of man comes under bound. In this light, are not more marriages crashing than before? Is it easier today to find the right spouse? Where are jobs? What about security?  Which government worldwide is solving problems? Didn’t Isaiah say take counsel together, and the world will not stand for God is with us?

  • Firm recommits to quality healthcare delivery

Firm recommits to quality healthcare delivery

A health insurance company, AXA Mansard Health, has said it will continue to deliver quality healthcare to its customers.

The company is also committed to the growth of its service providers across the healthcare value chain in the country.

The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Tope Adeniyi, spoke at a stock-taking to round off the business operation for this year.

He stressed that quality healthcare would have been a mirage without a burgeoning healthcare provider sector.

According to him, AXA Mansard will remain committed to the growth of the sector.

“Our nation’s healthcare sector has been making steady strides in accessibility, sophistication, and availability.

“While as a nation, we still have some way to go to ensure that affordability, quality, and accessibility are improved, we must commend the efforts of all stakeholders who have brought us this far. And for us at AXA Mansard, our provider network is top on that list.

“We are a customer first organisation, but we recognise that this value can only translate when the service providers share in this core value.

“So, our approach has been to work with them to complete that experience for our customers.”

Adeniyi said the year came with a lot of challenges, but AXA Mansard and its service providers were able to work together to weather the storm.

“As with the cost of a lot of other things, the cost of healthcare also went up significantly this year and the increasing awareness of health insurance also impacted some company fundamentals.

“But despite these challenges, we worked together with our providers to ensure that customers are given the best of care.

“On our part, we also invested heavily in technology to help reduce the pressure on our providers’ infrastructure and provide quick and easy access to our customers, and overall, ensured that the quality of healthcare services is not compromised.

:From our telemedicine app that provides access to our customers anywhere and anytime; to the MYAXA App, which provides a one-stop shop to all medical records of our customers; and our increased investment wellness programme such as gym subscriptions, mental health services, and many more.

“This decision came at a huge cost to us because we had to ensure that we don’t pass on the cost of these investments to our customers and that our providers are not also short-changed. But we believe these are what we need to do to continue to grow the healthcare ecosystem in Nigeria.”

He went on: “A healthy nation is a prosperous one. This is at the core of our purpose to act for human progress by protecting what matters.

“So the fact that health management organisations like ours and service providers need to work together for the prosperity of our nation is not lost on us. We’re indeed grateful that we also have providers who share in this purpose.”

Managing Director, Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, Dr. Olubisi Oyediran, said his organisation has enjoyed collaborating with AXA Mansard Health.

He explained that AXA Mansard is one HMO that prioritises customers’ well-being above all else; without neglecting providers.

The 12 lowest states with less than 30 per cent COVID-19 vaccination coverage are: Rivers, 5 per cent; Bayelsa, 8 per cent; Ondo, 13 per cent; Akwa Ibom, 15 per cent; Kogi, 15 per cent; Ebonyi, 15 per cent; Delta, 19 per cent; Taraba, 19 per cent; Edo, 20 per cent; Lagos, 23 per cent; Benue, 28 per cent; and Anambra, 28 per cent.

The US Government further noted that the efforts of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), alongside State and Local Governments, led to 54.3 per cent of the eligible population being fully vaccinated nationally, representing over 60 million Nigerians.

It, however, urged the government to intensify its efforts to ensure that the country achieves its herd immunity target of vaccinating at least 70 per cent of eligible population to ensure that the morbidity and deaths from COVID-19 is reduced to the barest.

Speaking during an event to celebrate the country’s COVID-19 vaccination milestones organized by the NPHCDA, the United States Ambassador, Mary Beth Leonard, said: “We commend the government of Nigeria for the successful launch and implementation of the S.C.A.L.E.S strategy, which resulted in the administration of over 100 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines to eligible persons in Nigeria. This is very uplifting and impressive.

“With more than 65 per cent of the eligible population vaccinated with at least one dose, and 54.3 per cent of the eligible population fully vaccinated, and 70 per cent coverage already in 12 states as of December 14, 2022, we are confident that Nigeria has laid a firm foundation to minimize morbidity and mortality as a result of COVID-19.

“As we rejoice in the gains made, we cannot forget about the states that are yet to reach those targets. As we look to the future, I commend the leadership of Dr. Faisal and his team for prioritizing the 12 lowest states and intensifying efforts to support those states to increase the uptake of the vaccine. I am optimistic that we will all make progress.”

In his remarks, the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the NPHCDA, Dr. Faisal Shuaib said: “The question was not whether we wouldn’t be able to do it, but the issue was always whether we had enough vaccines. But Nigerians came out and accepted the vaccines despite the misinformation, disinformation, Nigerians know for a fact that the vaccines are safe and effective. This is why we are seeing very few cases of COVID-19 still being reported.”

The Chairman of the Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, added: “The effect of this vaccination is the fact that deaths from COVID-19 have reduced drastically in Nigeria. As of 14 December 2022, cumulatively, 266,381 cases have been confirmed, 259,756 cases have been discharged and 3,155 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.”

  • How to stop mass exodus of community pharmacists, by ACPN

How to stop mass exodus of community pharmacists, by ACPN

Distressed by the mass emigration of its members, the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN) has tasked the Federal Government t to stop the brain drain in the sector.

This can be done by rejigging the new National Health Insurance Authority and giving community pharmacists right of place as it is envisaged in the new NHIA Act, ACPN said, stressing that anything short of this meant the assurance of the care for Nigerians might become a mirage.

Speaking at the National Summit on Universal Health Coverage in Nigeria, organised by the ACPN, in Lagos, the National Chairman of the association, Wale Oladigbolu, noted that without the inclusion of community pharmacists in drug prescription under the National Health Insurance System, the health insurance has missed it and it may fail.

He insisted that community pharmacists are the closest to the people in terms of trained healthcare professionals, adding that they are the heart of primary healthcare services. The country  has about 7000 community pharmacists.

“We are focusing on the new Act of Health Insurance; so if we get it right, the future of community pharmacy in Nigeria is bright.  If not, we can as well pass a death sentence to community pharmacy in Nigeria. A lot of my members are leaving the country in thousands, and, as a matter of fact, as the national chairman of community pharmacists in Nigeria, I am pleading that my colleagues should remain in the country, and I am planning so that they can have incentives to remain in the country,” he said.

He added that if the “national health insurance misses it this time around, 90 per cent of my members will leave this country, because, in other countries where they get it right, you would see that health insurance system is what we can call the backbone for the healthcare system in general, both in terms of quality of service to the people and accessibility of care, especially for the common man”.

Oladigbolu also said the aim of the summit was to assure the public as well as fellow healthcare providers that the association has a great interest in universal health coverage as well as equal access to health for everybody, irrespective of the social and economic status of that person. “As private providers, we want to partner with the government to make sure that this becomes a reality.”

Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) President, Prof Cyril Usifoh, said the summit was timely as it came at a time a decision has to be taken concerning meeting up with the Universal Health Coverage. “Whatever the resolution made here today will form part of our advocacy tools for us to use in discussing with the stakeholders towards solving the challenges that are facing the practice and that are hampering their delivery to the populace. So, our take is that whatever we have here today would be used by the PSN and form part of our advocacy tools,” he said.

The PSN boss, who was represented by the Chairman, Lagos PSN, Iyiola Gbolagade, said the new Health Insurance Act is good, but it wouldn’t have been good for us if not for the signing into law of our pharmacy bill, which has become an Act of the parliament.

The chairman of the occasion, Anthony Akhimien, a former president of PSN, commended the ACPN national chairman and his team for coming up with such a laudable programme, saying the challenges bedevilling community pharmacy practice were borne out of a lack of ideas and innovations.

“As you are aware, the UHC focuses on equitable healthcare distribution and bringing healthcare to the doorstep of every Nigerian and the target is 2030. We once had a target of 2000, but it became a mirage, but with 2030 staring us in the face, we feel the only way to achieve that is by bringing everybody together, including the stakeholders to dialogue on the way forward. The best way to go is to collaborate, and we have started it. As they say, the journey of 100 years begins with a step; so what you have seen here today is pointing to collaboration as all stakeholders here today are here for the same cause.

“Others should replicate this; let us dialogue and make the consensus work, all for the patients’ benefits.”

  • For men only: plan your funeral early in life (2)

For men only: plan your funeral early in life (2)

THE curtain falls today on this series, despite temptation last week to stand  it on a third leg next week.  I spent the week trying to persuade some women offended by the last column that  I am not a one- sided judge in the warfare’s between husbands and wives  which engulf  their children and pit  them against fathers. I know there is a flip side in every battle story, that proverbial  other side of the coin. Best on my counseling experiences in marriage and family quarrels, I was only warning young and aging men caught in tug- of love cul de sacs to not let their corpses be  disgraced  when they are  gone from the earth, and their wives and children are well placed  to call them idiots and to literally or otherwise spit on their earthly remains. Preparing early enough for one’s death and funeral has become  the  trend among men who no longer see eye- to eye with their wives and children. There is no doubt that such men maybe architects of their own  calamities, as some women told me last week. There is no doubt, also,  that they are stupid victims.  Both sides of the coin lead us  to wonder if LOVE no longer is the fundamental  of MARRIAGE. Will the walls crack to let in rodents, where LOVE was the fundation of marriage and each person lives and work with the other to fulfil the high task  of helping the other fulfil the purposes of earthly existence?   Unfortunately, men and women have reduced marriage to respectable  featherhood and motherhood. They do not realise child bearing is not the primary purpose of earthly existence. Nor do they understand that  marriage is a golden opportunity given to man by his Creator to  symbiotically release self,  servicing and helping  the spouse in a high, joint tasks of concious development of the inner person that would eventually lead each person homeward upon earthly death.  Today, most marriages are, therefore, no more than loveless and lifeless social contract which easily collapse, tormenting and poisoning the participants and dragging them earthwards. Thus, a gift from On High which was meant to help them are sent homeward after earth life   had become a burden which chains spouses  to the earth because it fills one with hatred  for the other, whereas love, not hatred, is the passport to the longed for Spiritual Home, Paradise, after earthly life.

A  letter I received from one woman  last week which   summarises the emotion of women who telephoned me or spoke with me sàys:

“All I want to ask Sir, is that isn’t this anti– women?Aren’t these generalisations from a patrilineal society like ours?

Though I don’t doubt the existence of stated cases, aren’t there opposite cases of hardworking women who were abandoned by their husbands who maligned their faithfulness, hardworking wives and turned the children against them? I know of a very pathetic case.

I’m pained when the narrative paints the woman alone as the  devil. I know what happened in my own family.

‘’We the children, inspite of all, gave both our parents good care before their departure and also gave them befitting burials…”.

From  the letter, I will proceed to the funeral wishes of  President Charles  de Gaulle, which made a serious impression on me at 20  in 1970 and inspired me at 35 to make a will for a solemn funeral in which there is no wining, dinning, dancing and bitting of drums.

The  Google  report the fellowing excerpt from President Charles De  Gualle Will for his funeral in 1970:

“I want my funeral to be held at Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises. […]The ceremony is to be organised by my son, my daughter, my son-in-law, and my daughter-in-law, with the assistance of my cabinet, in a manner that is to be extremely simple. I do not want a state funeral. Neither the president, nor the ministers, neither representatives of the National Assembly, nor constitutional bodies. The French Armed Forces alone may participate in their official capacity; however, their participation must be very modest, without music or brass bands or bugle calls”.

We returned from Charles De Gualle,a general in Second World War  French Army, to yet another case which spurred this column.

    Case 2

The way  I saw the first  case last week is the way I also  see the experiences of an 80-year-old man who was a prominent player in Nigeria’s bank system of the seventies. He lived with his wife in Lagos under managed co-existence  until his six children, in unison,  physically through some of them, bundled him to his upcountry home at the request of their mother, with instruction to never return to Lagos. For years, he asked me for nutritional advice about his skeletal condition.  When he became well acquainted enough for him to be able to discuss with me his emotional disquiet, he opened up. He was wheel chair ridden. The problem was spinal curvature from the waist line  which made a  bow of his back bone. His spinal column tilted about 45 degrees side ways from the waist line.

This gentleman admits infidelity in his hey days of youthful exuberance which his wife refused to forgive. It is unclear to me if it was from this situation  that their ranks so split that  their children turned their backs on him. Whenever they were alone, she would speak to him in a parable he did not understand until he lost all six children, including grown and married men, to his wife. The parable was that they were both in the bush to gather firewood (presumably for cooking fuel back home), but it was in the evening, when they would be set to return home, that either of them would know who gathered more  firewood than the other.

This was a Yoruba parable too deep for him to understand until the family split began to deteriorate. Whenever any of his children came on a visit to them, he or she spent no more than five minutes with him in the sitting room, standing. They could spend hours with their mother in her bedroom. On their way out, they merely bade him bye. He said he was pained because he sent all of them to the university.

Then, one day, the children came home and invited him to a made up special engagement  in their home town. Once the country-home, they informed him he had been relocated from Lagos for good to give their mother deserved peace of mind in old age. He couldn’t find the tears to relieve himself of  agony. On top of his travails, they told him to not will any property to them in the event of his passing.

This was the most troublesome aspect of this man’s emotional suffering. He had discussed it with many friends and the clergy in his home town. He did not see anything he had done all of his life to make him deserve all of these travails from his children, and wondered if he should not beseech the creator to call him away from the earth.

I couldn’t support that venture. We are permitted earthly existence to gather all the experiences we need for our maturation in the course of seeking, discovering and fulfilling the purpose of our earthly appearance and existence generally in His wonderful Creation. In our subconscious state where we existed before we came here, we beseeched Him for the priviledge of full conscious existence. The entire seven universes, unimaginably gigantic as each one is, were created to support our dream. Would forced or premature departure from the earth bring joy to all those beings who helped to bring these world’s about in the Will of our Creator for each of us?.  I couldn’t bring a curse upon myself by inferring that all these creation efforts were a waste in every way. He must learn to weather the storms of his life, calmly learning the lessons they teach him.

In any case, who tells us we live only once? If we glean that from the scriptures, the reference is to Spiritual or Final death, not material death. We are told in the same scriptures that the renegade “generation” of those days would not “pass away” until final judgement prophesies had come to pass. Thus, it is inferable  that, renegade”generation” is still cycling in and out of the earth in repeated re-incarnations. In this regard, do we all know who our siblings, spouses or children or neighbours or work mates are? Reincarnation affords us the opportunity to cast off old debts we may owe one another. Karma, which enables us to do this is, therefore, a great gift in our lives, no matter from how many earth lives away it may have trailed us to the present one.

My friend accepted this explanation. He is to not play the blame game, exonerating himself and blaming his wife and children. They are sowing new seeds which they, too, may reap in the fullness of time, maybe this time around or some earth lives away.He should forgive them and wish them all well.

Regarding his property, which he wanted them to inherit but against which they turned their backs, he could make his church the Administrators. He could still will it to his children as he feels strongly and inwardly advised with a 10-year provisor that the inheritors could be charities he would name, if,after 10 years, his children still maintained their position. He should not stay in the property beyond to wait for the end of this.Whatever we own is not ours, but property held in trust for creation, the provision from which we could take some for our sustenance while we turn the remainder to the needy. It should not hold us down like the biblical Lot’s wife. Additionally, this gentleman was advised to prepare for his funeral, for his children may boycott the body. This may be the most painful aspect of his experiences on the other side if he witnesses the ignominy his memory is subjected to. Who would like to touch his earthly remains from which his children pull away? Who would like to go swimming in a possibly stormy and angry ocean? The answer to that is that he lay out his funeral  in his will and make financial provisions for them. Soon after, the once jubilant and triumphant wife of this man was knocked over by a vehicle in the Lagos traffic and killed. He could not attend her funeral, given the state of family affairs. But, recently,a silver lining began to show up in the dark clouds. One of the children, whose own daughter was about to get married, scheduled the “introduction” and ” engagement” ceremonies to the country home to which they all once banished their father, who, meanwhile, has become vision challenged by glaucoma in both eyes.

Traditional belief in their part of the country blame this condition on some or emotional stress bottled up for long and not released. Is this why some psychiatrists and psychologists say sorrowful persons should cry their hearts out? Whatever it is, we both shouted hallelujah at the news and pray that more of the prodigal children do likewise. Today, there is no time to explain why women seem to have total control over their children and turn them against their fathers. In all the stories I have listened to, women bottle up annoyance in marriage and wait for the children to grow up before they “deal” with their husbands, using the children as weapons. Any man who faces such a challenge should not fold his arms, however young he may be.

It is never too early to prepare ahead for possible days of brimstones. Who is the perfect husband? which man easily permits his parents or siblings to be run over in his own home?

It is said in men’s peppersoup and beer man’s talk joints  that we hear battle voices in marriages when men refuse to be ridden like horses and find amity in those where the heads of men, like their brains, are secure  in the armpits of wives! And the children? They never really forget they were once tenants in the wombs of their mothers or drew sustenance in the most critical days of their lives from a woman’s breasts.

I still haven’t been able to persuade a gentleman to forgive his chilldren. He was educated at Cambridge University and was a top  corporate player in Nigeria before he crashed into rustic life after his wife took their children from him and, with them, migrated to the United States. The men among them are now remorseful, but his ears are stopped against their pleas. I guess they will get him when he passes, when he cannot decide who takes charge of his funeral, if he doesn’t act now. He is an avid reader of this column and will catch me out.

I may escape the wrath of a once successful hospital proprietor in Lagos who went home in retirement. His wife and children abandoned him and settled abroad. Living alone and suffering from the lack of a woman’s care and tending,  he unbelievably stretched out his hands to a woman, who, in the widest imagination of his friends, ought never to have come near his shadow. She  had had  three children for three  men. To keep him company for the rest of his life, she demanded he sells the hospital and give her half of the proceeds. He saw through his tears and threw her out. I know he still has the means to prepare for and to fund his funeral.

Some men, like a former director general in Lagos State civil service, have found that bringing another woman in when one goes doesn’t really solve problems. He lives in one house built on one acre of land in a posh neighbourhood of Lagos. When his wife and children deserted him, and he couldn’t transform his loneliness to solitude, a world in which his life could blossom more beautifully, he literally reached out to the gutters for a new companion. He surrounded her with money and comfort she never dreamt of. He brought three of her siblings in and sent them all to the university. But when the last of them was done with school, his companion and her siblings migrated abroad. Now, he is back to square one.

The lesson we are invited to learn from these stories is that we are all INDIVIDUALS. When men have lost control over women who, in the traditional society were taught to be their property. Innately, women are sensing that they are mightier than men. Indeed, psychically and spiritually, they are the stronger gender. Men are only physically better endowed. Women are “the deciding factors in creation” I learned long ago,and understood that to mean that men only follow their bidding. Therefore, unless a man lives a conscious existence, always open to the strenghtening Rays of Divine Grace and Love, he would bow even before a woman sinking to the depths and dragging everything along. These stories should also teach us that many marriages are false unions. Marriages are made in heaven, we are told. But not many people understand this statement. A marriage is not different from the profession, business or trade or even parenting. They are all meant to serve achievement of one goal…fulfilment of the Purpose of Existence. This presupposes that the partners know why they are there and where they came from and that they are to help each other, against all odds, to achieve this purpose by each one releasing self in the service of the other. But all that many women want are the men to make them wives and mothers, and, thereby, recuse them from the ” old maid” syndrome. When that is done, all else is done and well.

    Funeral

Arranging for one’s own funeral in Nigeria is still a pathway strewn with stones where there is no trustable support group to lean on. A bank may sound a good idea. But what if it goes bankrupt before one passes? The same goes for insurance companies and funeral homes. What may appear most reliable outside the traditional reliance on one’s own children and siblings is now one’s place of worship, and that is where many men are turning to. Even this option, in my view, has to be the well structured Christian churches and Islamic organisations which will not mess up with the funds and the plans or break up before one’s call over. I cannot recommend a government agency, for your money may be borrowed by the government to pay salary arreas or other debts. I believe we are now understanding why euro Americans have fewer children per family and turn them out into the world of adults at 16 to 18 to fend for themselves while the parents are still young and agile enough to prepare for life in old age…and their funerals. Our world is on the move, and we are following it!
