Ikire residents get free medical care for monarch’s 90th birthday

In celebration of the 90th birthday of Oba Olatunde Falabi, the Lanbeloye III and Alakire of Ikire, residents of the agrarian town, particularly the elderly, benefited from a free medical outreach on Monday. The initiative, which provided consultations and free medicines, was organised in partnership with the Geriatrics Unit of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, and the Oyo State branch of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN). This gesture honoured the monarch for his peaceful and impactful reign over Ikire.

The birthday celebrations, which began on Friday, January 17, with a prayer session followed by the Jumaat service at the Central Mosque, also featured a special reception on Saturday. Prominent indigenes were recognised during the event, and it concluded with a thanksgiving service at the RCCG Province 11 Headquarters in Ikire, attended by the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye. Oba Falabi is also a pastor in the RCCG.

In his sermon at the Thanksgiving Service, Pastor Adeboye congratulated Oba Falabi on his milestone and commended his peaceful leadership, which has led to significant achievements in Ikire over the past three decades. He encouraged the congregation to seek the fear of God and prayed for continued peace in the region.

Governor Ademola Adeleke, represented by the Commissioner for Culture & Tourism, Ojo Fafa Abiodun, also praised the monarch’s leadership, noting the remarkable development in Ikire across infrastructure, economy, education, and politics. He highlighted that few towns in Osun State, if any, have such representation in both state and federal offices, including a serving senator, commissioner, and state assembly member.

Other speakers, including Senator Lere Oyewumi, now a first-class chief in Ikire, commended Oba Falabi for his encouragement of political participation among Ikire indigenes. He reflected on how, in the past, political positions were often hard to fill, a situation that has drastically changed with more educated Ikire indigenes now engaged in politics. The three-day celebration also featured the attendance of key dignitaries, including Governor Adeleke’s representative, Senator Oyewumi, Hon. Abiola Ibrahim Inaolaji, members of the Osun State government, traditional rulers, and many Ikire indigenes, both locally and abroad. Born on January 20, 1935, Oba Falabi’s life story is one of dedication and service. Before ascending the throne, he was a renowned pharmacist, entrepreneur, and farmer, having served as the CEO of Oba Falabi (Nig.) Ltd and as the commercial manager for ROCHE (Nig.) Limited Lagos. A fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Oba Falabi’s vision is to ensure that Ikire’s indigenes, whether residing locally or abroad, can lead fulfilling lives in their homeland, with safety and peace for all.

NOA launches campaign against harmful chemicals in food preservation

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Ebonyi has launched a campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of using harmful chemicals for food preservation. During the campaign in Abakaliki, State Director Mr. Theophilus Nwokpor urged foodstuff dealers to abandon this dangerous practice. Nwokpor emphasised the significant health risks associated with these chemicals, warning that while their harmful effects may not be immediately visible, prolonged exposure could lead to serious health issues, including terminal diseases. He called on grain traders, particularly wholesalers supplying local and regional markets, to adopt traditional, safer methods of food preservation.

“We are educating traders about the dangers of using harmful chemicals in food preservation,” Nwokpor said. “Our priority should be to provide food that nourishes, not one that endangers public health.”

Mr. Emeka Orajaka, State Coordinator of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), also condemned the use of toxic chemicals in food preservation. Represented by Mr. Obinna Okonkwo, NAFDAC’s Principal Regulatory Officer, Orajaka warned that violators would face legal consequences and highlighted the tragic loss of lives due to such practices.

In response, Mr. Francis Nworie, Secretary of the Foodstuffs Dealers Association, called on the government to reduce the cost of Purdue Improved Crop Storage Bags from N3,000 to N500 to help traders adopt safer storage practices. Mr. Chidi Oduma, Chairman of the Association, supported this call, stressing that affordable storage options would promote food safety and reduce harmful preservation methods. The event included an interactive session with traders and a thorough inspection of food storage practices by officials.

30 edible herbs winking in the 2025 sky-line

Every New Year, I look out for good news in Alternative Medicine and Traditional Medicine in Nigeria. So, what are the good cheers today? EDMARK, a great player in the market until its court cases began a few years ago, is still under lock and key. Ubiqinol, that energiser and elixir for sagging hearts, is still selling for about eighty-something thousand Naira, up from about twenty-something under two years ago.

Milnapath, a Nigerian herbs producer and marketer which is trying to fill the gaps created by the departure of foreign plant medicines, is still bubbling with life.

My first tickle in 2025 was the story that a Nigerian in the United States who was said to have been practising medicine there for 40 years wound up his clinic and returned home to die when his doctors said he had just about three more weeks to live.

He was a terminal stage 4 prostate gland cancer patient, the story went. Who in that circumstance will not wish to end it all where his life had all begun? As I write, nine months after, he was to have died in the judgement of his doctors, this man is said to still be alive somewhere in Akwa Ibom State, and wishing to share the secrets of his survival with prostate cancer challenged persons.

I sought an encounter with him, careful to not be dealing with a crank.  I trusted him not all the way, irrespective of the clean reputation of an avid reader of this column who introduced us.

We chatted on the telephone for one or two days, but I had not enough information to press ahead..

Every-one who had the story of this man’s impending dead felt sorry for him, I learned.  Nevertheless, this doctor had a strong will to live.

Such persons are always connected with helpful forces in the Universe.  Some-one gave this sinking and seemingly helpless doctor a herbal medicine life-line.

Who is that man whose body is dying but whose spirit is alive who will not hold on to a last straw, whatever it would bring?

This man consumed the three herbal medicines introduced to him. His PSA( Prostate sensitive Antigen), a marker for prostate gland health which rages from ZERO to FOUR but had climbed to 148, crashed to 1.8! It was one of the Nigerian health miracles of 2024 if it really happened.

This doctor’s story of hope for prostate gland challenged persons world-wide is stuck for now somewhere in the works. Next, my search for sharing news led me to Edible  Herbs, a whopping 30 of them in a struggling multi-level marketing business. Edilbe Herbs gave me jioy because it fulfils an old dream that Nigeria rub shoulders one day with Euro-American and Asian countries in the global herbs market.

When some of us flagged off campaigns for MLM business in this sector in 1990s, and Nigeria became bombarded with herbs from abroad, we were accused of encouraging a swamping of Nigeria.

Not many persons realised then that the inflows would cause such pressure in the Nigerian market that would lead to an awakening and that this would generate movement from which, under THE LAW OF MOTION, a law of Nature, all sorts of activities and actions would ensue.

We may not have arrived at the point of plantation farming of herbs, or of their industrial processing or of their merchandising their marketing or of mass consumption not to talk of large scale exports, which may create millions of jobs in their value chains, we have, nevertheless, are now speaking of a couple of home grown networks with their own well packaged and effective products. As I welcomed Milnapath to the market last year, here is saying welcome as well to Edible Herbs.. Thirty is a  commendable number  What are these 30 herbs formulas from Edible  Herbs, and against some of which older products will they be competing?

Thirty proprietary formulas in one stable is commendable for a young company like Edible.  Its shows the company wishes to impact as many sub market as possible in the ever growing global Nigerian Alternative Medicine market. STD CARE Sexual transmitted diseases ( STDs) are still a market gold mine in Nigeria, especially among women.

Any-one on a good Zinc food supplement can easily pick the fishy, cheese and oven bread odour because this minerals improves the sense of smell, one of it about 200 functions in the body.

There is no hiding place for these odours either after sexual intercourse or during menstruation.  The woman so challenged suffers from either bacterial infection known as Bacterial Vaginosis(BV) or Trichomoniasis or candiasis. BV produces a fishy smell or rotten egg smell often likened to hydrogen sulfide gas(H2S) given off by decaying egg. In Trichomoniasis, which is caused by the trichomonia Vaginalis Parasite, the following odours can occur, according to a literature review: “…The odour is often fishy, strong, unpleasant similar to rotten fish, Musty, damp and earthy,Musky, strong and pungent. This odour is usually accompanied by other symptoms, such as thin, greenish-yellow or grayish discharge, itching, burning, or redness in the vagina and vulva, abnormal vaginal bleeding and pain during urination or sex”. Candiasis is a hard nut to crack because it is sugar driven and many women love sugar. It is caused by Candida Albicans, a fungus which can devolve into a yeast form. A literature review says: “…The smell is bread-like, a sweet, yeasty aroma, similar to freshly baked bread or sour, a tangy, acidic smell, fermented or a pungent, beer-like odour.

This odour is usually accompanied by other symptoms, such as..thick, white, cottage cheese-like discharge, itching, burning, or redness in the vagina and vulva and pain during urination or sex”. The woman’s secret place is an easy target for bacteria, candida, fungi and other yeast forms. In several articles, I have explained how they find their ways there outside mating.

Lack of adequate aeration maybe one of them. Aeration introduces oxygen into this region.Germs hate oxygenation because its kills them.  The gown appears to no longer be in fashion.

Many wear pairs of trousers from sunrise to sunset and do not sleep like Mother Eve at night, wearing nothing under and keeping their legs ajar for aeration.

During the day, many wear nylon pants which cause heat and sweating. However, the trend now is cotton and net pants.

Some do not iron their briefs before they wear them to kill germs. Many do not wash their briefs clean of their own discharges on them or wear protective panty liners.

Some hang their briefs to dry in the toilets.

When the water closets is flushed, air displaced by the pressure of in-flowing water may lift out some germs which may be deposit on such underwear.

The Nigerian STD herbal medicine market is supportive of challenge for women.  My favorite recipe is Golden Seal  Root  Powder added to Egg White to form a paste which is massaged deep into the secret place. Golden seal will kill the germs. Egg white is a power house of proteins, minerals and vitamins to nourish damaged cells.

It is better done before bed and a panty liner worn over brief to catch any outflow. Golden seal is one of nature’s most effective antibiotics. It may be used for not longer than about seven days because it could be dehydrating. This is a quality which, like its capacity to prevent adherence to tissue wall, causes germ to die. For they are weakened when they cannot adhere to cell wall to suck nutrients, are malnourished and die. After this therapy, vitamin E softgel or aloe vera softgel may be inserted over another week to feed the cells with nutrients.

Thereafter, probiotics or friendly bacterial may be inserted to reactivate the friendly bacteria population. From Dr H.K Bakhur, in his Herbs That Heal, I learned that Indian women paste their vagina with mango seed kernel powder to kill sperm during sex. What kills sperm will kill germs.

This product, too, kill vagina germs and systemic germs. Thus, I ate the kernel with food or used it as tea in the mango season. Before I got lost in a woman’s world, it is better I quickly re-trace my steps, and, literally, return to town. BEFORE STD CARE… Before STD CARE came on the scene, there were various recipes from several MLM companies. Forever Living Products(FLP) had Alo Gelly from Aloe vera and, Propolis tablets and Aloe Berry Nectar, a liquid formula of Aloe Vera gel and Cranberry, for a good urogenital tract cleans.

Aloe Gelly and Propolis tablets may be used as vagina paste. Pearls Bloom came from Shine Way. Cleans Woman is a device inserted into the vagina like Tempax two days after the period and left on for about three days to literally speaking, funmigate all the way to the tubes.

It is similar to a device from FOHOW. Last year, MILNAPATH ( Millennium Nature Pathway) added Gynocare to a seemingly endless list of these remedies.

What has STD CARE brought to the market? It is presented as an antiviral, antibacterial and for addressing diseases such as painful conditions, syphilis, candidiasis (whites), Gonorrhoea, painful urination, staphylococcus aurea and skin infections.

How would STD care achieve these goals? The possibilities is the ingredients…Golden seal root, Red clover, sesaparila, Burdock root, chick weed, Pau d’ arco and chappral.

These, no doubt, are powerful anti- microbials. GINKGOBILOBA Any herbal medicine company worth its salt cannot ignore this herb. It promotes circulation to the brain and eyes in particular. With the brain under increasing pressure nowadays, it is well recommended for mental illnesses and vision challenges. This is why, along with Bilberry, another vision herb, ginkgobiloba is present in reputable vision formulations. Black  Seed Oil with Ginger Oil and Garlic Oil

These three oils independent of one another became popular in Nigeria during COVID- 19 era. I took Black seed oil as a carrier for oregano oil and other oils to rid myself of symptoms. I said my experiences on Facebook (at John Olufemi Kusa)under the article Corona Virus: LOOK- ALIKE SYMPTOM JOIN THE LEXICON.

This oil combinations may improve heart health, digestive system health, immune system activity, reduce Inflammation, provide anti-oxidant and anti-cancer properties and offer neuro-protective benefits.

They may be benefit, also, for skin and hair health. Edible Herbs presents this oil combination in addition as helping conditions such as asthma and of having blood thinning effects. EDIPIAN, this product is presented for another health market…osteo arthritis, Rhematoid arthritis ( RA), pain, spondylitis, frozen shoulder, Gout, Sciatic nerve problems and neuritis.

In other words, it may be seen as a remedy for bone and nerves challenges. Magnesium. This mineral needs no introduction on this page.

The readers are well advised of its value in bone health, blood sugar metabolism, brain health, especially in depression and insomnia, for example, energy production and heart health, especially during palpitation. As a matter of fact, MAG PHO(magnesium phosphate) in the family of BIOCHEMIC CELL or TISSUE SALTS is among the fastest acting remedies against palpitation of the heart , according to many Naturopaths. Edible Herb Magnesium brand is not a biochemic salt. Nevertheless, it is thoughtful of Edible Herbs to include it in its stable.

I am not comfortable when Zinc is complexed to a Magnesium salt. This is because, Magnesium being higher than Zinc in the electrochemical series, may crowd Zinc out of absorption by the cells.

My suggestion for Zinc intake as a food supplement, based on clinical advice, is that it be taken on empty stomach first thing in the morning or last thing at night or three hours after a meal or at least one hour before the next meal. POTASSIUM IODIDE, Dr Max Gerson and his disciples theorised that tumours and cancer cannot develop or thrive in tissue well suffused with Potassium. Therefore, high dietary potassium intake is one of the recommended treatment for uterine fibroids, which is very rampant among Nigerian women today. Watch what Nigerian women eat. There is little Potassium in it.

They consume more Sodium through Mono Sodium Glutamate (MSG), to add food seasoning taste to their cuisine. Yet, more Sodium in the diet pushes away more Potassium from the body. How would they not be Potassium deficient and prone to uterine fibroids and cancer? OIDIDE, the second component of Potassium iodide (KI), is a reduced form of oidine and is more biologically active in the body and readily absorbed.

It protects the thyroid gland against radiation incidents and accident. It helps the thyroid to produce its hormones, without which the body cannot run well. For example, iodine defficiency causes goiter, and enlargement of the thyroid gland and may cause hypothyroidism, that is under active thyroid gland, which may cause excessive weight gain, lethargy, sleepiness, fatty and even uterine fibroids, as research has linked subnormal thyroid activity to this condition and several others, including hypotension.

Potassium, iodide partner in KI, is important for heart, muscle and nerve functions and, hence, should be useful also in the uterus, a bundle of muscles. Some eye doctors prescribed KI eye drops to stimulate metabolism in the treatment of cataract of the eye lens. Many physicians believe KI can prevent replication of viruses, which should make it good for HIV therapy. In the thyroid gland, iodine support production of T3 and T4 hormones.

Iodine is noted also for skin and wound healing, fight against bacteria, break down of mucus for easier expectoration. These views, which probably justify the introduction of Potassium iodide Product into Nigerian market by edible herbs, are supported in some ways by the fellowing internet reports on problems of iodine defficiency and subnormal thyroid gland: “… Hypothyroidism can slow down metabolic rate, leading to weight gain, fatigue, and decreased energy levels….Negative nitrogen balance can cause muscle wasting and decreased protein synthesis….. Some studies suggest a link between hypothyroidism and cataract formation, possibly due to oxidative stress and inflammation… Hypothyroidism may increase the risk of glaucoma, although the exact mechanism is unclear…Hypothyroidism can increase levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, potentially leading to atherosclerosis….Some hypothyroidics may experience low blood pressure, dizziness and fainting(hypotension)…Some research suggests a link between hypothyroidism and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), although the exact mechanism is unclear….Hypothyroidism may increase the risk of sinus infections, possibly due to impaired immune function….Hypothyroidism can lead to chronic inflammation, including cardiovascular disease and cancer…Hypothyroidism can cause muscle weakness, aches, and stiffnes, cognitive impairment, memory problems and decreased concentration..Not every hypothyroidic will experience these issues, and the severity of symptoms can vary widely”.

I would add that you check your metabolic rate through a personal home test available on the internet from Dr Broda James titled Dr Boda James basal metabolism home test. EDIBLE EYE CARE, this product may be of interest, especially to cataract and glaucoma challenge person or those persons who wish to prevent them.

Its ingredients  include red eye bright, bilbery, ginkgobiloba, milk thistle, carrot extract and chappral. If you know that MILK THISTLE is a liver herb and wonder what it is doing among eye herbs, it is because the company believe that a weak liver, like weak kidneys, can be a cause of eye problems. In the 1990s, one of my favorite eye products was the original maxi vision. It came with about 24 ingredients in low dosages.

They included the fabulous Lutein, Zezanthin and Astazanthin. We compensated for the low dosages by reinforcing them, in alternations, with smaller products with fewer ingredients but higher dosages. As Lutein, Zezanthin and Astazanthin are carotenoids, it may be assumed that Beta carotene, a carotenoid in this product, can yield them as well as it convert to Retinol,a precursor of Vitamin A. However, this is false. I would have like zinc and copper to be included, because Vitamin A needs zinc for activation in the eye and zinc without enough copper may cause anemia, unless the copper can come from other dietary sources.

KIDNEY CARE: This product promises that , literally speaking, it can move mountains in the kidney .This promise is founded on…Golden rod, corn silk, yellow dead nettle and Dandelion. Golden rod is anti inflammatory and diuretic. Yellow nettle, too, is anti-inflammatory ,anti-bacteria and diuretic. Corn silk, among its other health benefits, clears kidney infections, inflamation in the urinary system and the prostate gland, breaks kidney stonesand stops bed wetting. MORE PRODUCTS: Here are some more ….VIGINAL DETOX PEARLS, ADISAMIN/VADETOX PAD( anti inflammatory, anti- itching, deodorising, detoxification of vaginal parasites, eliminates dryness, fights leucorrhea, frequent urination and uterine prolapse)/HERBAL FOR HYPERTENSION/HERBAL FOR DIABETES/ COQ10/ STOP PILE/MACO POWER/EDIBLE CALCIUM/MEN’s FORMULA /INTERNAL DETOX (it is formulated against liver and kidney disorders,Hepatitis A and B, Hypertensions/ stroke, diabetes, weight problems and urinary infections/ OMEGA-3/GINSENG OOLONG(improves mental alertness, boots immunity, prevents tooth-decacy e.t.c), PROSTATE CARE, MALAPHOID( for malaria and tyhoid, related questions). Space does not permit mention and discusion of other products, including a herbal soap formulated to relax nerves and muscles, calm the mind and improve sleep. As I do with every Nigerian network entrant into this column,I filled my wine glass.

May I request that you, too, fill yours and we clink glasses, toast and drink to health of EDIBLE HERBS.

  • FCT resident doctors begin three-day warning strike

FCT resident doctors begin three-day warning strike

Resident doctors in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have commenced a three-day warning strike on Wednesday in protest against unpaid salaries, allowances, and other unresolved demands.

The strike by the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) in the employ of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) followed the expiration of a three-week ultimatum issued last year.

The association had previously given a 21-day ultimatum to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, on December 23, 2024, urging the government to address their grievances.

The decision of the doctors to embark on the warning strike was reached during a Congress meeting held by the association on Tuesday.

The strike affects all government hospitals in Abuja, including those in Wuse, Asokoro, Maitama, Kubwa, Zuba, Kwali, Abaji, and Nyanya.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, the ARD FCTA President, George Ebong, expressed dismay over the deteriorating state of hospitals and the neglect of healthcare workers’ welfare in the nation’s capital.

He lamented that doctors in Abuja have been abandoned and appealed to the Minister to act promptly to avert an indefinite shutdown of hospitals.

Ebong revealed that despite holding several discussions with the government and granting a two-week extension to address their concerns, no tangible action had been taken.

He highlighted the plight of doctors, particularly the six months of unpaid arrears, which remain unresolved.

He criticised the government for neglecting doctors’ welfare, urging the Minister to prioritize their needs just as infrastructure projects are being addressed.

He warned that failure to resolve the issues after the warning strike would lead to an indefinite industrial action.

Ebong also pointed out that promises regarding the accoutrements allowance, essential for daily medical operations, had not been fulfilled.

He expressed frustration over unfulfilled assurances from the authorities, noting that such delays erode trust in the system.

He further decried the lack of career progression for doctors, citing cases where medical professionals who passed promotion exams years ago continue to work in higher roles without formal recognition or corresponding financial benefits.

The situation, he said, has left consultants being treated as senior registrars.

Highlighting the risks faced by healthcare workers, Ebong noted that despite an approved increase in hazard allowances since 2021 due to the high risks of diseases like COVID-19 and Lassa fever, doctors in the FCT are still owed 13 months of arrears.

He called on the government to honour its commitments and address these long-standing issues to restore confidence among medical professionals.

  • Contaminated, synthetic foods fueling rise in kidney diseases, expert warns

Contaminated, synthetic foods fueling rise in kidney diseases, expert warns

Renowned medical expert, Professor Sani Al-Hassan, has attributed the increasing cases of kidney diseases in Nigeria to the consumption of contaminated and synthetic foods.

Al-Hassan, a Consultant Urologist at Bayero University and Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital highlighted these concerns on Wednesday during the official launch of the dialysis unit at the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences Renal Centre in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

He further pointed to the growing prevalence of other health conditions and the influx of fake drugs into the country as significant contributors to organ failure.

Commending the university management for establishing what he described as the most advanced kidney treatment facility in Nigeria, Professor Al-Hassan urged citizens to prioritize regular medical check-ups to monitor their health status.

He said: “There are environmental causes that have been identified especially in some riverine areas. We are now using a lot of fertilizer for agriculture and it has been found in some riverine areas. This fertilizer enters water and we end up drinking a portion of it.

“Even the food we eat, there may be some remnant of this fertilizer and a lot of other synthetic food we are eating in the world is being attributed as a cause of kidney failure

“Well, kidney disease is on the increase worldwide, Nigeria inclusive, and the causes are mainly that of hypertension, diabetes, and chronic glomerulonephritis which is a form of the disease that mainly affects children but it can occur in adults.

“And as we remind ourselves, the kidney is a filter. Part of its job is to filter blood. Any toxin that enters the blood has to come out through the kidney.

If you take drugs, if you take food substances, when they finish their job in the system, in the body, they are filtered through the kidney. So the kidney is the last one that takes the assault and it ends up failing.

“You will be surprised that you find somebody who is very healthy, but suddenly he develops kidney failure. So these are some of the things that have been identified as causes of kidney failure.

“It is important that when you reach a certain age, from the age of 30 and above, you should be checking your blood sugar, you should be checking your blood pressure.

“And you should do medical checkups, generally, because you may think you are very healthy. Suddenly, when they go and do some tests, they find you have kidney disease, which is ongoing gradually without any direct manifestation in your body.

“And then also, when you check your BP on a regular basis, because of various causes of hypertension, and you also check your blood sugar, because we eat a lot of carbohydrates”

“The food we eat is totally unregulated, but over 90% of our food is carbohydrate, and this is converted to sugar. So you end up overdriving your system and end up having diabetes.

“Obesity is gradually increasing in Nigeria because of more abundance of food”, he said.

He called on the government especially the National Agency for Fodd and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to redouble their efforts to stop the importation of fake drugs into the country.

“A lot of the drugs that come into this country are fake.NAFDAC is doing its best, but it needs to increase scrutiny on the drugs that are consumed, because some of them are toxic to the body, and they are manufactured and brought into this country.

“So the government is doing its best, but I think they should ginger NAFDAC to increase their surveillance on the type of drugs that come into the country.

“The centre has all the facilities except the expertise. They are working on the expertise because essentially, I have been to many centres in this country, and this is the best, the most dedicated centre, you know, purpose-built for kidney care as far as infrastructure and facility is concerned, but they need to work on manpower to get the expertise to manage the cases and also take care of long-term kidney failures”, he said.

Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Prof Jesse Uneke said the Renal Centre was established with the support of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

He said the centre’s establishment is in keeping with the mission of the University to serve mankind.

He said the institution aims to achieve this by adopting the highest form of professionalism, ethics, and excellence by training highly qualified health and other related professionals who will work to improve health outcomes, through the provision of high-quality, efficient, cost-effective, and integrated health services.

“Our overall goal is not only to achieve the reversal of Medical Tourism but also the reversal of Educational Tourism.

“As part of the Central goal of establishing this university, which is for research, teaching, and community development, the university has a mandate to establish Centres of Excellence that will be reputable for advancement in research, training, and patient care.

“Through the support of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), the University has established the DUFUHS Renal Center.

Prof Uneke noted that the DUFUHS Renal Centre is a state-of-the-art Centre of Excellence for Renal Research, Training, and Patient Care.

“The Centre operates with a multı-disciplinary team of experts specializing in conducting research and training on kidney-related issues and caring for people with kidney disease.

“Kidney disease is a chronic illness with four basic treatments: haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis conservative management, and transplantation, which include emptive transplantation, living donor & cadaveric transplantation.

“It is well known that chronic kidney disease is under-recognized and underdiagnosed. Patients with end-stage renal failure (ESRD) are thought to represent the tip of the iceberg of the entire burden of chronic kidney disease.

“This is more so in Nigeria where patients often present late or not at all health facilities for several reasons which range from prohibitive cost of health care services to use of alternative treatment like traditional/native healers.

The continuous worldwide increase of people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) means that research and shared knowledge into the causes and treatment are vital to delay the progression of chronic kidney disease and to improve treatments and the care given through research and training,” he said.

  • Japa changing Nigeria’s fertility patterns, encouraging polygamy – Expert

Japa changing Nigeria’s fertility patterns, encouraging polygamy – Expert

…urges couples trying to conceive to have sex 2 to 3 times a week

The ongoing trend of Nigerians leaving the country in search of better opportunities abroad, popularly called “Japa,” is affecting fertility rates and family structures in Nigeria.

A fertility expert and Medical Director of Nordica Fertility Centre, Dr. Abayomi Ajayi revealed this during a virtual media parley.

According to Dr. Ajayi, the physical separation caused by one partner relocating abroad often leads to fewer opportunities for sexual intimacy among married couples.

This, he said, is a major reason for the decline in fertility rates.

“When one partner moves abroad, the physical distance and challenges of long-distance relationships often result in reduced sexual activity. This lowers the chances of conception,” he explained.

Dr. Ajayi also pointed out that some men, after earning foreign currencies, return to Nigeria feeling financially empowered to take on multiple wives.

This practice, he noted, is becoming more common among older men, which is reshaping Nigeria’s family dynamics.

“Some men, especially those converting their pounds or dollars to naira, feel wealthy and take second or third wives. For instance, you now see 60-year-old men marrying women in their 30s. Japa is not just changing demographics but also negatively affecting fertility rates,” he added.

Speaking on how couples can improve their chances of having children, Dr. Ajayi advised aspiring parents to have sexual intercourse at least two to three times a week.

He also stressed the importance of tracking the woman’s ovulation cycle.

“If a couple has sex two to three times weekly, the chances of conception increase. For women, understanding their menstrual cycle is very important. Start tracking ovulation from the 9th day of your cycle, and have intercourse every other day around that period,” he said.

He added that couples struggling with fertility should seek medical assistance. He divided intending parents into two groups: those starting their journey and those already aware of fertility issues.

“Most people in the first group, if they engage in regular intercourse and maintain a healthy lifestyle, can conceive naturally. However, the second group may need treatments like IVF to achieve pregnancy,” he said.

Dr. Ajayi highlighted that many young couples, even those living together, face difficulties maintaining intimacy due to distractions like excessive smartphone use. He urged couples to prioritize their relationship and intimacy.

He also emphasized the need to maintain a healthy lifestyle, warning that being overweight can affect fertility for both men and women.

“In Nigeria, the issue is often that the husband is abroad, while the wife is at home, or vice versa. This reduces their chances of conceiving. For couples living together, distractions like phones can also impact intimacy. A healthy lifestyle, including weight management, is crucial for fertility,” he said.

The expert noted that polygamy is on the rise as some men use their perceived wealth from living abroad to marry additional wives.

This trend is especially noticeable among older men and is contributing to changes in Nigeria’s social and family structure.

As Nigerians continue to migrate abroad, Dr Ajayi warned that these changes in relationships and family patterns could have long-term implications for fertility rates and demographics in the country.

  • WHO regrets US withdrawal, seeks dialogue

WHO regrets US withdrawal, seeks dialogue

The World Health Organization (WHO) has urged the United States to reconsider its withdrawal from the organization, highlighting the achievements of their collaboration and ongoing internal reforms implemented over the past seven years.

It emphasised the importance of maintaining the partnership between the US and WHO, given its critical role in safeguarding the health and well-being of millions worldwide.

WHO’s regrets followed the pronouncement of President Donald Trump in an Executive Order that a formal correspondence would be sent to the health body of the intention of the country to withdraw its membership.

The text of Monday’s executive order cites the “organization’s mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic that arose out of Wuhan, China, and other global health crises, its failure to adopt urgently needed reforms, and its inability to demonstrate independence from the inappropriate political influence of WHO member states,” as reasons for the US withdrawal.

Also criticized was the financial contributions expected from the U.S., claiming the WHO imposes “unfairly disproportionate payments” on the country compared to other member nations.

The order outlines plans to send a formal letter to the United Nations secretary-general notifying him of the U.S. intent to withdraw.

If completed, the withdrawal would sever the U.S.’s financial support for the WHO, where it serves as the largest donor.

Additionally, U.S. federal staff would cease collaborating with the organization on global health initiatives.

However, responding on Tuesday, WHO expressed regrets over the announcement that the United States of America intends to withdraw from the Organization, stating that issues of contention have witnessed reforms.

It seems to explore dialogue for reconsideration for the sake of millions around the globe needing health-related intervention.

The statement reads: “WHO plays a crucial role in protecting the health and security of the world’s people, including Americans, by addressing the root causes of disease, building stronger health systems, and detecting, preventing and responding to health emergencies, including disease outbreaks, often in dangerous places where others cannot go.

“The United States was a founding member of WHO in 1948 and has participated in shaping and governing WHO’s work ever since, alongside 193 other Member States, including through its active participation in the World Health Assembly and Executive Board.

“For over seven decades, WHO and the USA have saved countless lives and protected Americans and all people from health threats.

“Together, we ended smallpox, and together we have brought polio to the brink of eradication.

“American institutions have contributed to and benefited from membership in WHO.

“With the participation of the United States and other Member States, WHO has over the past 7 years implemented the largest set of reforms in its history, to transform our accountability, cost-effectiveness, and impact in countries. This work continues.

“We hope the United States will reconsider, and we look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue to maintain the partnership between the USA and WHO for the benefit of the health and well-being of millions of people around the globe”.

The latest development was the second time in less than five years that he’s ordered the country to withdraw from the organization, despite it being a move many scientists fear could roll back decades of gains made in fighting infectious diseases like AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis.

Experts also warn that the move could weaken the world’s defenses against dangerous new outbreaks capable of triggering pandemics.

  • Brain drain: Our hospitals may soon be empty, CMDs cry out

Brain drain: Our hospitals may soon be empty, CMDs cry out

…UUTH returns N1b salaries due to shortage of workers

Chief Medical Directors (CMDs) of teaching hospitals across Nigeria have raised concerns over the increasing brain drain in the health sector, as medical professionals continue to leave the country in search of better opportunities abroad.

The CMDs voiced their concerns during a budget defense session before the House of Representatives Committee on Healthcare Institutions, chaired by Hon. Patrick Umoh.

The session, which involved heads of Federal Medical Centres and university teaching hospitals, focused on the review of their 2024 budget performance and proposals for 2025.

Despite the federal government’s investments in health infrastructure, the CMDs warned that tertiary hospitals risk being depleted of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers due to poor remuneration and lack of incentives.

Among the attendees were the CMD of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), Prof. Emem Bassey; CMD of Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo; and CMD of University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Prof. Jesse Abiodun, among others.

Prof. Emem Bassey disclosed that UUTH returned N1,056,034,392.80 to the federal government in 2024 due to staff shortages. The amount, originally allocated for salaries, could not be utilized because of unfilled vacancies resulting from staff resignations.

“For 2024, our total capital appropriation was N20,617,154,692.56, broken down into personnel costs of N12,874,350,949.56, overhead of N240,186,681.00 (about N20 million monthly), and capital expenses of N7,502,617,062.00. Personnel releases totaled N11,818,316,556.72, leaving a balance of N1,056,034,392.80, which was mopped up by December 31 due to unfulfilled recruitment,” Bassey explained.

Read Also: Barron Trump: Meet Trump’s 18-year-old son who played crucial role in winning youth vote

He further noted that UUTH achieved 99.99% release of overhead funds but faced delays in implementing a radio diagnostics center project due to bureaucratic bottlenecks at the Federal Executive Council.

For 2025, UUTH has proposed a total personnel budget of N19.93 billion, overhead costs of N482 million (approximately N40 million monthly), and a capital budget of N21 billion.

Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo of LUTH emphasized the urgent need to improve remuneration for health workers to curb the brain drain, warning that Nigerian hospitals could soon be empty if the trend continues.

“The primary reason workers are leaving is economic. We witness resignations every day. If this continues unchecked, our hospitals may become empty in the next one or two years. While the government invests in infrastructure, hospitals remain empty due to the lack of staff,” Adeyemo said.

LUTH’s 2024 budget of N19.2 billion included N13.57 billion for personnel and N33.2 million for overhead.

Adeyemo reported 100% overhead utilization and 91% personnel performance but noted that capital project performance stood at only 45%, with significant outstanding releases.

For 2025, LUTH proposed a budget of N32.7 billion, including N20.3 billion for personnel, representing a notable increase from the previous year.

Prof. Jesse Abiodun of UCH expressed frustration over delayed fund releases, which he said had hampered operations. He disclosed that only 38% of the hospital’s N5.59 billion capital appropriation for 2024 had been released, leaving a balance of 72%.

“Payments only began in December. We were able to utilize the 38% because we had already prepared a cash plan. For 2025, we are proposing N4.39 billion for capital, slightly lower than 2024, as we had to adjust to the envelope system,” Abiodun stated.

He added that UCH’s overhead budget proposal for 2025 is N690 million, reflecting an increase due to rising electricity bills from the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company.

Chairman of the House Committee on Health Institutions, Hon. Patrick Umoh, described the situation in tertiary health institutions as precarious.

He emphasised the need for fiscal responsibility and pledged the committee’s commitment to ensuring that allocated funds are properly utilized.

While the committee could not address all institutions during the session, it resolved to collect written submissions for further review. Members later convened a closed-door session for additional deliberations.

“I have noticed that a lot of varying neurologic surgical cases get referred from Niger State to us in Abuja, especially the emergencies which mostly arrive late; like traumatic brain injuries, strokes, and spinal cord injuries and who may pass away before obtaining care or become complicated. There are also cases like brain tumours that come to us late and helpless.

“The absence of neurocritical care and a neurological surgeon in Niger state has contributed to the preventable and salvageable high morbidity and mortality from these cases. As a surgeon who hails from Niger State, this is part of our efforts to give back to the state”, he said
