  • PDP demands justice for slain women leader

    Gbade Ogunwale, Abuja

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday demanded justice for its Kogi State Women Leader, Mrs. Acheju Abuh, who was burnt to death in her home on Monday, allegedly by political thugs.

While invoking the wrath of God on the perpetrators of the gruesome killings, the party called on the police to immediately track down and bring her killers to book.

In a statement in Abuja, spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, said the death of Abuh and others killed by political thugs in the Kogi election would never be in vain.

“Our party once again mourns our compatriots killed by the APC in this election, including our Woman Leader, Acheju Abuh, who was burnt to death by APC thugs at her home on Monday,” it said.

The party insisted that the “violent rigging” of the Kogi and Bayelsa states governorship elections by the All Progressives Congress (APC) could not stand.

The statement further said: “The NWC maintains that there is no way the PDP will fold its hands and watch the mandates clearly given to its candidates, Engr. Musa Wada in Kogi state and Senator Douye Diri in Bayelsa state, left in the hands of repressive usurpers, manipulators and murderers.

“Indeed, the nation is still at shock over the brazen show of violence, where security forces coordinated the invasion of polling units, shooting and killing of voters and carting away of ballot boxes to government facilities where results were altered and fictitious figures given to INEC to declare the APC candidates as winners.

“Nigerians watched with horror as APC thugs and security forces traumatised and held voters hostage, murdered our compatriots, injured and maimed many more in violent attacks that involved the deployment of police helicopters.

“Our party has been made aware of the roles played by the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu as well as the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu in the elections.

“While we urge these officials to do some introspection on the anguish they have caused the people since the rigging of the elections, the PDP NWC assures that it will never hesitate to expose such ignoble roles at the appropriate time.

“The irreversible fact remains that though evil may appear to thrive for a while, truth and justice will always prevail at the end.

“The APC and its candidates must bear in mind that what they could not get through the ballot box, they cannot get by violence, manipulation and killing.

“The PDP is therefore undeterred in the determination to use all legitimate means available and allowed within our democratic practice to confront the usurpers and retrieved our mandate in Kogi and Bayelsa states.”

  • Kogi poll credible, say observer groups

    James Azania, Lokoja

Coalition of Civil Society Groups accredited by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to observe the Kogi State governorship and Kogi West Senatorial re-run on Tuesday condemned calls in some quarters for the cancellation of last Saturday’s poll.

The coalition at a post-election press conference in Lokoja, noted that the pockets of violence and ballot snatching did not undermine the fairness and credibility of the election.

Reading from a prepared text, the Nation Coordinator, Comrade Peter Nwokolo, called for the prosecution of those that perpetrated violence and their sponsors, on the day of election.

According to him: “Coalition affiliates jointly or severally observed the elections in all polling units across Kogi State and our views here constitute a composite/bird’s eye view of our observations.

“The elections were smooth and successful in most areas across the state as observed by our members.

“Elections in a few polling centres were marred by violence, ballot box snatching and other forms of disruption, by hoodlums, some of them in police uniform, working for unknown principals.

“The coalition calls on the Nigeria Police and other law enforcement agents to unearth the faceless individuals behind such criminal activities.

“As said earlier, coalition observed incidents of violence, which affected a few polling units across the state. The severity of such incidents was more pronounced in certain areas, particularly Lokoja. This is because of the sophistication of the operations in the affected units in the state capital.

”Coalition must, however, note that while the worst act of violence disrupted polling in the affected units, the actual damage to the electoral outcomes remained minor overall.

“In comparison to franchised rigging malpractices such as hijack and unlawful thumb-printing of ballots on a massive scale, ballot box snatching tends to affect much fewer votes and it is a wonder that politicians and their thugs still resort to it.

“In concluding, coalition states categorically that the 2019 Kogi State governorship election held last Saturday,  were largely free, fair and credible. The observed anomalies reported above, including the incidents of thuggery and associated violence, were comparatively too few and ineffective to justify the calls from some quarters for total cancellation of the entire elections. The INEC is advised to ignore such calls as misguided.”

  • PDP Reps’ caucus deplores killings, violence

    Victor Oluwasegun, Abuja

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Caucus in the House of Representatives on Tuesday protested the Killings and violence that characterized last weekend’s governorship and National Assembly elections in both Kogi and Bayelsa states.

Briefing newsmen in Abuja, the caucus members expressed determination to approach the court to seek redress for members of their party who had been shortchanged.

House Minority Leader, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, who led other members of the minority leadership, including the Minority Whip, Gideon Gwani and Deputy Minority Leader, Tobi Okechukwu, to the briefing, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate the killings of persons and loss of property during the elections.

Elumelu said: “We are not impressed with what happened in the just concluded Bayelsa and Kogi elections. We are not in favour of the outcome of the election as PDP members and other minority parties and, therefore, we are 100 per cent not in support of the outcome of the election.

“We have also come here to register our grievances, contrary to the Point of Order earlier raised by our colleague, Mr. Abejide Adeleke (ADC, Kogi), commending the outcome of the election, adjudging to be fair and credible. We want to state that we are displeased with the violent actions meted out to innocent Nigerians, which led to loss of lives and property.”

According to Elumelu, the Women leader of the PDP in Wada Aro Campaign Council and a nephew of Senator Dino Melaye were killed during and in the wake of the election.

The Deputy Minority Leader, Toby Okechukwu (PDP, Enugu), while contributing said: “we are particularly sad with the loss of lives whereby a PDP woman leader was burnt alive and the killing of Senator Dino Melaye’s nephew was quite disheartening.

The lawmakers also expressed readiness to amend the Electoral Act because of its loopholes.

  • Ex-Attorney General Ojo hails Bello’s re-election

    Our Reporter

Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Bayo Ojo (SAN), on Tuesday lauded the re-election of Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, during the last Saturday’s election.

Ojo urged Governor Bello to be magnanimous in victory and hit the ground running immediately he’s sworn into office for a second term, and consolidate on his gains recorded in the last four years.

He commended the people of Kogi State for coming out en masse to exercise their franchise and elect the candidate of their choice, saying that was the beauty of democracy.

    Agency Reporter

Amaechi told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the victory was a testimony of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administrative transformations.

  • Two die as party supporters clash in Kogi

    Agency Reporter

Two persons have been confirmed dead in Lokoja during a bloody clash between party supporters on Monday at Ochadamu, Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The state Police Command’s spokesman, DSP William Aya, who confirmed the development in Lokoja yesterday, said a former councillor in the local government, Mrs. Salome Abu, and one Mr. Awalu Zekeri, died in the crisis.

He said violence erupted on Monday due to a misunderstanding between Zekeri of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Mr. Goodwin Simeon, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“In the process, Simeon stabbed Zekeri with a knife on his lap and he died on his way to the hospital,” Aya said.

As a result, angry youths in Ochadamu mobilised to the house of Simeon Abuh, who is an uncle to the suspect and set it ablaze, thereby burning 60-year-old Mrs. Salome Abuh to death.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that until her death, Abuh was the woman leader of PDP in Ochadamu.

Aya further said three other houses were also burnt during the mayhem.

In its reaction, the PDP condemned the killing of its woman leader by jubilant supporters of APC, calling on the police to arrest the perpetrators.

Spokesman for the Wada/Aro Campaiagn Organisation, Mr. Farouk Adejoh-Audu, while reacting to the incident, called on men of good conscience to prevail on the police to halt attacks on members of the PDP in the state.

The state government, in its reaction, condemned the violent clashes in Ochadamu, warning that anyone caught taking the law into his hands would be punished, regardless of party affiliations.

“We feel disturbed by reports of violence in Ochadamu, which has led to the loss of lives and property in the community,” Mr. Kingsley Fanwo, Director-General, Media and Publicity to the Governor, said.

Fanwo, who also doubles as the spokesman for the Bello/Onoja Campaign Organisation, noted that government would not shield any party member, who broke the laws of the land.

He said: “Gov. Yahaya Bello has directed security agents to quell the rising tension and ensure that perpetrators of the murder and arson are brought to book.

“The governor is elected to protect all Kogi people, regardless of their ethnic or political beliefs.”

  • Bello’s journey to second term

Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has been declared winner of last weekend’s poll. His main opponent, Musa Wada of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has vowed to challenge the results at the tribunal. Correspondent  JAMES AZANIA writes on the governor’s journey to the second term.

Even before the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Governor Yahaya Bello winner of the weekend election in Kogi State, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Musa Wada, had rejected the likely outcome.

Bello scored 406, 222 votes. Wada polled 189, 704 votes, while Natasha Akpoti of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) came a distant third with 9, 482 votes.

The Kogi State Governership Election Collation Officer and Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Prof. Ibrahim Garba, announced the result on Monday at the INEC office in Lokoja, after receiving results from the last two local government areas.

About 25 political parties contested the election.

The PDP agent at the collation centre, John Agada, who had challenged  results from the LGAs, declined to sign the final result, saying it was not a true reflection of the exercise.

Accompanied by his running mate, Hon. Sam  Aro, Wada, during a press conference, in Lokoja, on Sunday, even while collation of results from the 21 LGAs was ongoing, alleged that the results were falsified.

He said what happened over the weekend was neither democracy nor a reflection of the wishes of the electorate.

He lamented that the police colluded with INEC to undermine the will of the people.

He said there is no need for election, “if Okene that had forty thousand accredited voters, now came up with a hundred and twelve thousand.”

He described it as a sad day for Kogi people who he said are in mourning mood.

“Do you see anybody rejoicing? Is this how it is the day after a true victory? It is not about me here. It is about the long suffering people of the state who have been under bondage in the last four years.

“I won this election free and fair. Just imagine that they leave out the rigged election of Okene, Okehi and several cases of brutality meted on our supporters, and the widely reported cases of ballot snatching, I would have won neatly,” he declared.

Wada vowed to challenge the verdict at the tribunal.

“The governorship election is not about me, but about another four years of misgovernance that would be midwifed by the APC. The results were already written, and is not a reflection of the people’s wishes,” he added.

For the Kogi West Senatorial District rerun, INEC said it will announce the date for the supplementary.

While Senator Smart Adeyemi (APC) polled 80,118 votes, Senator Dino Melaye (PDP) polled 59,548

A winner was, however, not declared.

The Returning Officer, Prof. Olayide Lawal, declared the rerun inconclusive. He said the supplementary election will be conducted in 53 polling units, with 46,127 registered voters expected to participate.

Reactions trailed the declaration of Bello as the winner.

‘Governor Yahaya Bello had a total wide spread across the 21 LGAs in Kogi State. Even if you remove Okene vote from the total votes recorded for him, he will still have won the election’

There was jubilation around the NTA roundabout, Paparanda Square area of the capital and some other places.

Bello described his electoral victory as a reflection of true democracy.

The governor in a statement by his Director on Media and Publicity, Kingsley Fanwo, said he is now spurred to do more for the people of the state who overwhelmingly re-elected him for a second term in office.

He said: “This victory is for Kogi people that value true democracy. And, we can assure that Governor Bello will not abandon his campaign slogan, which expresses his desire to do more for Kogi people.

“We thank Kogites who voted for us. We also thank Kogi people who did not vote for us; they have challenged the governor to do more for them to earn their confidence.

“We urge the Peoples Democratic Party to act to exemplify the spirit of sportsmanship by accepting the verdict of Kogi people.

“We also thank the party hierarchy for throwing their weight behind the governor.

“We thank the Independent National Electoral Commission, security operatives and other public institutions for ensuring that the election was free, fair, credible and peaceful.

“Governor Bello will do more for Kogi. Kogites will be better for it.”

A former speaker of the House of Assembly, Abdullahi Bello, who hails from Kogi Central as the governor, said the victory can not be disputed.

“Governor Yahaya Bello is our son. We’ve been politically oppressed with acute marginalization for too long by previous governments. You may recall the event of January 27, 2012 when I was Acting Governor, which was painfully denied by Ibro/Wada after three days.

“This new Wada that was the candidate of the PDP told the whole world on an AIT interview that our votes from (Kogi) Central Senatorial District was inconsequential, and therefore, failed to campaign in our senatorial zone. These and many other factors made my people to come out to express their anger through the massive votes recorded in Okene and Adavi local governments, in particular.

“Governor Yahaya Bello had a total wide spread across the 21 LGAs in Kogi State. Even if you remove Okene vote from the total votes recorded for him, he will still have won the election.

“So, in this election, it was a pay back time, that it will be a practical lesson for those who erred in the past by the faulty assertions that only huge numbers can win elections. So many other factors could determine the emergence of victory and leadership, most importantly, Almighty God. This is our time as choosen by God Himself.

He added: “The kind of physical development going on in the five LGAs in our home are unprecedented. And, we are the grateful and appreciative type. GYB, as popularly called and admired by his teeming followers, did much in other areas which made him popular.

“When he led APC to over 85 percent victory in the 2019 general elections, some people thought that it was a fluke, but last Saturday’s election and it’s victorious outcome is pervasive and total. I have predicted this outcome many months back before the party primary election, that Governor Yahaya Bello will not only win the primary election, that he will win the main election convincingly.

“I have witnessed history today, and I am grateful to God.I admonish all Kogi kind hearted leaders to rally round him as we prepare  for his second term in office. Kogi State will be more united under Governor Bello; his victory has simply signified the notion that any child of the common man from any part of Kogi State can aspire and be voted for as governor of our state.”

But, the poll has been trailed by criticisms. Independent observer groups and civil society organisations (CSO), midway into the exercise on Saturday, condemned widespread  thuggery, voter intimidation and harrassment.

To the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), suppression, votes buying and intimidation of observers and journalists characterised the elections.

Idaya Hassan, Director, CDD, said the election was characterised by poor logistics arrangement, as materials and voting came late.

She lamented that armed thugs were moving in vehicles, despite the official restriction of movement, adding that she  remained at a loss as to the authority under which the thugs were allowed to move.

She said the CDD expressed its concerns before the election, explaining that the shortcomings cast a dent on the Kogi election.

Hassan said despite several warnings to INEC and the influx of security agencies, the poll still failed.

The Chairman, YIAGA Africa, Dr Hussaini Abdu, said he witnessed vote buying on a first hand basis at several polling units, while the police looked on. He said it appears “our politicians are trying to normalise it.”

He added: “Reports on voter inducement and vote buying were observed across the LGAs. Specifically, YIAGA Africa received reports of voter inducement and vote buying in Adavi (PU 001 Afinorere), Ankpa (PU 010 Ward 01), Ibaji (PU 007 – Itale Iyanu Ward), Idah (PU 001 – Ugwod Ward), Yagba East (PU 01- Ward 08), Kogi KK (PU 005 – Ukwu Ward) and Ajaokuta (PU 005 – Deregulation Ward) LGA.

“Voters were paid as much as N5,000 in some cases in exchange for their votes. At Aluaja,  Iyano Ward in Ibaji LGA, INEC officials were given N15,000 and security agents N5,000, to compromise the process.

“Unknown men and party agents of some identified political parties were found to be attacking and intimidating voters in polling units of LGAs in Dekina (PU 017 – Ward 12 and PU 001 Yashi), Lokoja (PU 001 – Ward Council) Ofu (PU 005 – Ugwalawo Ward), Ankpa (Ojojwu Ward 3) and Igalamela/Odolu (PU 022 – Ward 8) LGA. WTA observers were beaten and their observation checklists destroyed and, in the process, degenerated to sporadic shooting in PU 027 – Ayingba Etiaga, Dekina LGA.

With the contentious issues, yet at hand, the battle for supremacy for the most coveted state seat, may as well be shifted to the court arena.
