  • Dino accuses Bello of sponsoring thugs

    Tony Akowe, Lokoja

The PDP Senatorial candidate for Kogi West, Senator Dino Melaye yesterday  accused Governor Yahaya Bello and the All Progressives Congress of desperation to hang on to power at all cost.

The Senator who was reacting to the attack on his polling unit by political thugs however said that despite the violence and thuggery that   characterised the election, he would win the election.

He claimed that those who led thugs to attack his polling unit have been arrested by the police and has made confessional statement as to who sent them on the errand and are presently in police custody.

Senator Melaye said the attack did not come to him as a surprise as they had already given the police earlier information of possible areas of violence and ballot box snatching.

He claimed that if the election is conducted 100 times, he was confident of emerging winner, saying “if they ae popular, they will not be introducing violence into the process. They cannot achieve what they want through the gun.

“I am calling on the security agencies and INEC to respect their promise that where ever ballot boxes are taken away, it cannot be recorded and that votes in that unit will be cancelled.

“All these areas they have taken ballot boxes and ballot papers away should not be entertained to all at the collation centre. So that only valid votes will count because once a ballot box has been taken away, the integrity of those votes is completely questionable. So, INEC should respect their promise and not allow these election riggers to have their way.

“For me, the election in my unit went over half way before the hoodlums came and started shooting.  The bad thing is that one of the boys was shot and was taken to the hospital by the police.

“I am happy they have been apprehended and that our cry that Yahaya Bello wants to be governor by all means is already established. All those arrested are all APC members and they have all confessed who sent them. We must see the end of this matter because we will not allow it to be buried.

“This is not an election. An election that is militarised, an election where ballot papers and ballot boxes are easily carted away by gun men is not an election. If you conduct this election 100 times, I will win.

“If they are popular, they will not introduce violence. All the ballot papers that were scatted were all PDP which show my popularity and acceptability. The difference between me and Smart Adeyemi is the difference between darkness and light.”

    • INEC may cancel results from units affected by ballot box snatching
    • Bello, Melaye, Dickson, Lyon, others win in their polling units

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were locked in a shouting-match  last night over the conduct of the governorship election in Bayelsa and Kogi States and the senatorial poll in Kogi West.

Outgoing Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State called for a review of the gubernatorial election in the state which, in his opinion, was characterized by ballot snatching and violence.

Two persons were reportedly killed in Kogi East after some men drove to a polling unit and opened fire on people.

An alleged fake policeman, dressed in SARS uniform, was subsequently arrested.

The election started as early as 8.00am across Kogi State and progressed peacefully until unknown gunmen began to shoot intermittently in Lokoja, the state capital.

Governor  Yahaya Bello voted in  his Agasa, Okene local government polling unit at about 8.50 am, while the PDP candidate, Musa Wada voted at his Odu Ogbeyaga Market Square polling unit 001 in Dekina local government area.

Senator Dino Melaye, who wants to return to the Senate following an Appeal Court judgement nullifying his March election, voted at about 10.00am at his Aiyetoro Gbede polling unit 1 in ward 4 of Ijumu local government area.

    He called the process peaceful

However, about 30 minutes after casting his votes, pandemonium broke out at the polling unit located beside the Apostolic Church headquarters in the area when suspected thugs began to snatch ballot boxes.

As the electoral officers made attempt to pack up the electoral materials for safety of their lives and the electoral materials, the thugs, driving in a black Toyota Hilux van with no registration number, and a Honda Civic car, arrived in full speed causing panic as the people ran for safety.

One of the thugs alighted from the Hilux, smashed one of a box which was apparently the one containing votes for the senatorial election and made away with the other box, while journalists and election observers as well as the electoral officers ran for safety.

Residents of area accused the APC of engineering the attack, stressing that it was out of fear that the PDP was going to win the election in the area.

Another resident who claimed to be present at the town hall polling unit when the thugs arrived there said Senator Dino Melaye had come to the place apparently to see what was going on and was challenged by one of the voters who wanted to know what he was doing there since that was not his polling unit.

When things had calmed down in the area and journalists, some of youths who appeared to be Senator Melaye’s supporters attacked them, smashing the back windscreen of one of the Sienna space bus they were traveling in.

Reacting to the development, Senator Dino Melaye accused Governor  Yahaya Bello and his party, the All Progressives Congress of desperation to hang on to power at all cost.

He was however silent on the attack on journalists by his supporters soon after the thugs that snatched the ballot box left.

He merely said those who snatched the box had been arrested and the ballot box recovered.

The Senator said despite the violence and thuggery that   characterised the election, he was confident of winning the election, adding that those who led thugs to attack his polling unit had been arrested by the police and made confessional statements.

He asked  the security agencies and INEC to  “respect their promise that where ever ballot boxes are taken away, it cannot be recorded and that votes in that unit will be cancelled.

“All these areas they have taken ballot boxes and ballot papers away should not be entertained to all at the collation centre.

“So that only valid votes will count because once a ballot box has been taken away, the integrity of those votes is completely questionable.

An election that is militarized, an election where ballot papers and ballot boxes are easily carted away by gun men is not an election. If you conduct this election 100 times, I will win.

“If they are popular, they will not introduce violence. All the ballot papers that were scatted were all PDP which show my popularity and acceptability. The difference between me and Smart Adeyemi is the difference between darkness and light.”

Zonal Chairman of the PDP for Kogi West, Barrister Kola Isa told The Nation at one of the polling units that his supporters were being prevented from voting for the PDP at Okoro Gbede area of Ijumu local government, few minutes’ drive from Senator Melaye’s village

The traditional ruler of the town, Oba Abdulganiyu Isa dismissed the claim, saying nobody was denied such an  opportunity.

One of the agents of the PDP at the polling unit accused the local government Chairman of spear heading the disenfranchisement of his members, alleging that “he came here and said anyone who will not vote for APC should leave the line.

The exercise was largely peaceful in Kogi Central where Gov. Bello voted.

The governor commended INEC and the security agencies for improving on their performance during the last general election. But there was sporadic shooting in Lokoja by gunmen believed to be political thugs around the Lokongoma Phase 2 area of the capital.

They carted away ballot boxes and threw on the ground polling materials as a police helicopter hovered above.

A report said an INEC official was abducted at SUBEB polling unit, where ballot box snatching was also reported.

    Voters scampered for safety

Ballot boxes were snatched at the Lokoja Club, St. Mary by Paparanda Square and Fehintolu (Adankolo New Layout) polling points.

Two persons, namely  Umoru Shuaib and Faruk Suleiman, were feared killed in Abocho community in Dekina local government area.

The Governorship candidate of the PDP, Musa Wada who voted at the Odu Ogboyagha market square polling unit described the process as peaceful so far.

He said: “having voted, the election looks peaceful for now, although for APC their stock in trade is to snatch ballot boxes.

“There was an attempt by one of their hooligans,  but he was repelled.

“You know they will always go to regroup and come back.  I have advised the voters to stay and defend their votes very well,” he said.

He expressed confidence he would emerge the winner of the election.

Sounds of sporadic gunshots were also reported in Emewe Okapda, part of Ajiyolo communities in Dekina local government area of the state.

In Aikpele-Ajaka polling unit 002, Igalamela-Odolu local government, masked armed men shot sporadically into the air, disrupting the exercise as voters and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) scampered for safety.

In Ayingba, political thugs stormed some polling units, snatching ballot boxes despite the highest level of security presence in the entire local government.

However, there was a large turnout of voters in several polling units in Kogi East Senatorial District in the governorship elections in Kogi State.

At Ogbelo 001, Aloji Ward polling unit, which has two voting points A and B, where a large crowd had come out to exercise their franchise, the presiding officer, Ibilike Victor, said the exercise went on smoothly.

He however complained that result sheet for the second voting point B was hey yet to arrive at about 10am.

A policeman believed to be fake was arrested by men of the Nigeria Police Force at the Igala Unity Square area in Anyingba.

The suspect , dressed in a black T-shirt and a pair of black trousers with a black jacket with SARS inscribed on ,it was accosted by a team of Special Anti-Robbery Squad officers who were on patrol in the area.

CDD, YIAGA Africa decry violence, intimidation, vote buying

The Centre for Democracy and Development and Yiaga Africa condemned widespread incidents of thuggery, voter intimidation and harassment, stressing that security operatives and electoral officials were compromised in some parts of the state.

It said suppression, vote buying and intimidation of observers and journalist  characterized  the elections.

Idaya Hassan, Director, CDD, added that the election witnessed poor logistics arrangement, as materials and voting began late.

She lamented the fact that armed thugs were moving in vehicles despite the official restriction of movement, saying that she  remained at a loss as to the authority under which the thugs were allowed to move.

She said that the CDD expressed its concerns before the election, explaining that the observed shortcomings cast a dent on the Kogi election, after several years of the practice of democracy in Nigeria.

She said that despite several early warnings to INEC and the influx of security agencies, the state still failed to move from being violence prone.

Also addressing pressmen yesterday in Lokoja, the Chairman, YIAGA Africa, Dr Hussaini Abdu, said he witnessed vote buying first hand at several polling units, while the police looked the other way saying “it appears our politicians are trying to normalise it.”

His words: “Reports on voter inducement and vote buying were observed across the LGAs. Specifically, YIAGA Africa received reports of voter inducement and vote buying in Adavi (PU 001 Afinorere), Ankpa (PU 010 Ward 01), Ibaji (PU 007 – Itale Iyanu Ward), Idah (PU 001 – Ugwod Ward), Yagba East (PU 01- Ward 08), Kogi KK (PU 005 – Ukwu Ward) and Ajaokuta (PU 005 – Deregulation Ward) LGA.

“Voters were paid as much as N5,000 in some cases in exchange for their votes. At Aluaja,  Iyano Ward in Ibaji LGA, INEC officials were given N15,000 and security agents N5,000, to compromise the process.

“Unknown men and party agents of some identified political parties were found to be attacking and intimidating voters in polling units of LGAs in Dekina (PU 017 – Ward 12 and PU 001 Yashi), Lokoja (PU 001 – Ward Council) Ofu (PU 005 – Ugwalawo Ward), Ankpa (Ojojwu Ward 3) and Igalamela/Odolu (PU 022 – Ward 8) LGA. WTA observers were beaten and their observation checklists destroyed and, in the process, degenerated to sporadic shooting in PU 027 – Ayingba Etiaga, Dekina LGA.

  • Governor, APC clash

Bayelsa Governor Seriake Dickson, who voted at Oruerewari, Polling Unit 005, Toru Orua in Sagbama local government area, asked INEC  to cancel the election in some parts of the state, where the exercise was characterized by alleged brigandage, hijacking of electoral materials and personnel.

He also called for outright cancellation of the elections in Nembe and Southern Ijaw local government areas.

He said: “I call on the Chairman of INEC to issue an order canceling the process in all the wards, in all the local government areas affected, in all the wards and units, where materials have been stolen or hijacked, where officials have been kidnapped and held hostage to enable the APC cook up non existing figures”.

Dickson described the APC as an unpopular party accusing the APC-led Federal Government of plotting to foist a one party system in the country.

He alleged that rogue elements in the Nigerian Army connived with the APC thugs to perpetrate electoral fraud and insecurity in some parts of Southern Ijaw, Ekeremor and Ogbia and even the state capital, Yenagoa.

He said: “Materials meant for Eniwari community, Opuama ward, most locations in Southern Ijaw as we earlier predicted were hijacked. As everyone knows, the APC has no foothold in Bayelsa to win an election but they have an armed militia, surveillance contractors who kill and maim for the APC.  They also have the Nigerian Army and rogue elements of the Police Force working in concert with them to deny the citizens of these communities their right to vote.

“So as we are speaking, in our country, in this day and age, gun wielding militia men with the aid of security forces have overrun the election officials and most of the electoral officials in Southern Ijaw. These officials as we speak, have been kidnapped and held hostage. This has been the lot, this has been what we’ve been managing since 2015, with APC at the center, not caring about the lived and dignity of our people. The APC at the center are too hungry and determined to make Nigeria a one party state.

“The president has to wake up and do something. What is going on in Bayelsa in the name of election is not a democracy. I call on the President to call on the security agents particularly the Army to stop desecrating Democratic governance and subjecting the image of the country to ridicule. I call on the Inspector General of Police to be true to his professional calling and direct the DIG and all the security operatives to protect the people of Bayelsa”. I do not want to be pushed to call on them to defend and protect themselves.”

But the APC accused the governor and his party of masterminded violence in some strongholds of the APC to discredit the exercise in those areas while manipulating results and th electoral process in his areas of strength.

The Chairman of APC, Amos Jotham, Chairman, said having seen the defeat steering it in the face, the PDP perfected high level of violence and tried to intimidate voters bit for the intervention of the military.

He specifically noted the widespread violence in Yenagoa the State capital, precisely in Ward 2, Onopa community and Opolo where materials were allegedly hijacked by PDP thugs loyal to a PDP lawmaker.

The State APC Chairman, who used the occasion to call on all security agencies to take note of the situation, said that the PDP, currently drowning in the state following  lack of popularity and acceptability of its candidate, decided to resort to hijacking of election materials as the only way out.

He said: “Other areas where election materials were hijacked by the PDP are Sagbama Ward 6, 7, 11 and 14. We have noted high level of electoral misconduct in Sagbama, the LGA of the incumbent governor, Henry Seriake Dickson.

“We call on all APC supporters to maintain peaceful conduct throughout the process. It is very glaring that the APC is coasting to victory because of the popularity and acceptance of its flag bearer David Lyon who is poised to transform Bayelsa State from its current state of quagmire the PDP led administration has taken the State into”.

Former President, Goodluck Jonathan, expressed disappointment over the late arrival of election materials to his polling unit, 39, in Otuoke in ward 13 of Ogbia Local Government Area in Bayelsa State.

Jonathan, who came out to cast his vote met only journalists on ground, when he arrived his polling unit about 8:30a.m.

“Where are the electoral officers?” He queried, saying: “Well, this is where I will vote, but since they are not here yet let me go back inside. You see now, youths of nowadays, you need to do more.”

But Jonathan later emerged with his wife, Dame Patience, to cast his vote in the presence of Ukuachukwu Orji, who is the INEC supervisory resident electoral commissioner for Ogbia LGA.

He said: “My wife and I were able to cast our votes today as soon as the polling booth at Unit 39 Ward 13 in Otuoke opened just before noon. I urge Bayelsans and voters in Kogi State to go about performing this important civic responsibility in a peaceful manner.

“I am encouraged by the determination and yearning of Nigerians for good governance to believe that we will soon get to a point where we will adopt the right attitude and innovation that will strengthen our democracy”.

  • Lyon leads in Bayelsa governorship election

    Mike Odiegwu, Yenagoa

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in  Bayelsa State, Chief David Lyon, appeared, last night, to be coasting home to victory in the election to determine  who succeeds Governor Seriake Dickson.

Polling unit results showed that Lyon was leading the PDP candidate, Douye Diri, in Southern Ijaw, Nembe, Brass, Ogbia, Ekeremor,  and most parts of Yenagoa, the state capital.

The results showed that Diri was not doing well in  his Kolokuma-Opokuma Local Government Area as most units especially in Odi and Kaiama voted for Lyon.

But Governor Seriake Dickson won his Unit 005, Toru-Orua with 1906 while Lyon of the APC scored 5. But Lyon cleared all the 569 votes in his Olugbobiri polling unit leaving the PDP with no vote.

Ward 13 comprises Otuoke, Otuaba, Ewoi, Otuabula 1 and Otuabula 2.

In his remarks after voting, Jonathan expressed dissatisfaction over the lateness of the arrival of the materials to the polling units.

He said: “We must conduct ourselves if we want to real bring people to rule us either as president or governors.

“Nigerians are always blaming people in authorities and the leaders, so here they must blame themselves.

“Look at even this voting, I was around earlier, but the materials had yet to arrive in the polling unit.

“I have led election monitoring teams to other African countries, we use to go 30 minutes before the time and in our reports, we indicate the exact time when the vote starts.

“I am really disappointed on what I observe today compare to other African countries I monitor elections.’’

  • APC thugs on the rampage, alleges Diri

    Our Reporter

The gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) in Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri,   yesterday accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of colluding with  the security agents to manipulate the election in the state.

Senator Diri stated this shortly after casting his vote at his polling unit, ward six, unit four in Sampou community, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area.

    He voted at about 10.40am.

“It is going on peacefully in my unit and Kolga. Voting orderly here. It’s going on well here. However, I have reports of pockets of electoral fraud commited by APC, coming on with thugs to hijack materials denying PDP members from voting. I raised the red flag about Nembe Bassambiri. What I have is that no PDP agent is allowed to go into Nembe Bassambiri. At Eniware in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, the reports I have is that the APC thugs went there. The same with Opolo, and other places. But we are monitoring the process”, Diri stated.

The PDP candidate also called on INEC to justify the huge investments on this election by ensuring free, fair and credible poll.

Diri, called for cancellation of cooked up reports from where electoral materials were hijacked.

“Let me call on the umpire first, the INEC, to be alive to their responsibility on the disturbing reports on the incidences we are hearing. Where they need to invoke their power, they should do so either not accepting cooked up results where materials have been hijacked”, Diri said.

He stated, “we call on the security agencies not to take side with APC, which are the reports we are getting. Let them be professional and neutral so that the election will be credible and open. So that our party members are not harassed.”

  • Sylva laments skirmishes in Sagbama, Ekeremor

    Our Reporter

The Minister of State for Petroleum, Chief Timipre Sylva, lamented some skirmishes in Sagbama and Ekeremor but expressed confidence in INEC saying the ongoing election was better than the last governorship election in the state.

Sylva, who spoke while casting his vote at Dukuraku polling unit 04, ward 04, at about 12:40 pm,  in his country home, Okpoama, in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

Sylva said: “I have voted and it is a peaceful election in Ward 4 Okpoama. As you can see, I have been confined to my Ward and election has been smooth so far.

“I heard that there are few skirmishes here and there in Sagbama and Ekeremor. I have not heard of any other problem here in Bayelsa State.

“As for the INEC, they have been progressively improving and every year the processes are improved and I think we have a better outing for INEC this time. And I believe that this election will be better than the last one.

“I have always been confident, I have said it many times that the APC is the preferred party in Bayelsa. I am sure that we will win.”

Also, the candidate of APC, Chief David Lyon, who voted in Olugbobiri Community in Southern Local Government Area, described the election process as peaceful so far, saying the INEC did a better job this time.

While expressing confidence that his party, APC, would emerge victorious at the end of the poll, Lyon called on security agents to remain neutral and professional.

However, the candidate of the PDP, Senator Douye Diri, accused the APC of sponsoring thugs that allegedly hijacked election materials in Ekeremor and Southern Ijaw LGAs.

He said: “I had earlier raised the alarm about  Bassambiri in Nembe. From the reports I have, no PDP agent is allowed into Nembe Bassambiri. At Enewari, the report I have is that the APC went there with thugs to hijack materials.

“At Opolo Community in Yenagoa Local Government Area, the APC went there with thugs, the same goes for other LGAs where the APC is creating crisis for our members.

“We are calling on the umpire INEC that they should be alive to their responsibilities because we have received reports from several other Wards and other Local Government Areas where they need to invoke their powers.

“They should invoke their powers of either not accepting cooked up results from where materials have being hijacked. Secondly, we call on security agencies to be alive to their duties and not to take sides with the APC which are the reports that we have started receiving.

“Let them be professional in their conduct, let them be neutral so that the election will be credible, transparent and open so that our party members will not be harassed or intimidated.”

Alaibe, after casting his vote at his Igbainwari unit in Opokuma said: “What we have started out here is to ensure that the electioneering process is free, fair and credible and it has happened here again.

“You can see there is no ballot snatching, nobody is fighting anybody, it has been a peaceful process that should be emulated across our state.

“As a peace advocate, I am happy when I see things happened seamlessly. INEC has managed to do the right thing today. So, in this unit where I voted it is peaceful and seamless. We thanked INEC and all the bodies including the media and civil societies for a peaceful conduct.”

  • Pockets of violence as Bayelsa votes

    Mike Odiegwu, Yenagoa

Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State and the All Progressives Congress (APC), traded blame yesterday  on account of  the pockets of violence in some areas during the governorship election in the state.

The election kicked off at 8am with late arrival of materials in some polling units across the eight local government areas especially in Yenagoa, the state capital

There was an impressive turnout of voters in most polling units as people came out en masse even before the arrival of electoral officers and materials to cast their votes.

Though the exercise was generally peaceful, there were skirmishes in some local government areas such as Yenagoa, where gunshots disrupted voting in some of the wards and Southern Ijaw, where materials meant for Ward 17 in Koluama 2  were scattered by thugs.

Thugs invaded some polling units in Opolo, Agudama and Famgbe axis of Yenagoa, shooting sporadically and disrupting voting. But security agencies especially the army and the police repelled them.

In Sagbama, the Local Government Area of Dickson, there were complaints that the electoral materials were diverted and led to disenfranchising of voters in some wards.

A former Acting Governor, Chief Nestor Binabo, alleged that all materials meant for Agoro, Ward 11, in Sagbama were hijacked and diverted to Toru-Orua, the community of the governor.

He said: “I didn’t vote. The reason is that the materials meant for the elections  for my ward Agoro Sagbama were hijacked by PDP thugs and nobody voted in that ward 11 in Sagbama local government.

“We have protested and we are asking to either go back or cancel whatever results that anybody may summit. The materials were moved from Sagbama, to a place called Bolu-orua and they were loaded into  the  Naval gun boats.

“The ward headquarters from Bolu-orua is just about ten minutes drive on the water.”

There was a report that four officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)  were abducted in Bumodi-Gbene in Yenagoa and Ologi in Ogbia Local Government areas, but were later released.

At Ologi (Ward 03) of Ogbia Local Government Area, a senior electoral official cancelled voting following violence.

The official, Ukuachukwu Orji, who is the INEC supervisory Resident Electoral Commissioner for Ogbia LGA, said members of the Ologi community stopped the election in the area.

  • INEC may cancel results from units affected by ballot box snatching, denies PDP allegation

    Tony Akowe

The Independent National Electoral Commissioner (INEC) in charge of Information and Voter Education and Festus Okoye has said that election results from polling units where there were reported cases of ballot box snatching may be cancelled depending on reports from the presiding officer in such units.

Okoye also said that the Commission was not aware of allegation made by the Peoples Democratic Party that Governor Yahaya Bello and the APC was forcing the Commission to sign prefilled results.

The INEC National Commissioner told The Nation that if there are areas where ballot box snatching was reported, the presiding officer is expected to write a report on such incident to the Electoral Officer stating the issues concern and how they fill into the guidelines.

According to him, the report from the presiding officers from such units will help the commission to determine whether the results from such units will be cancelled outright or whether a rerun will be ordered or whether unit will be awarded a zero score.

He said further that until such reports is received from the officers on the field the commission will not take decision on it.

On the allegations that Governor Bello is forcing the Commission to sign prefilled results, he said the commission was not aware of such incidence and is not party to such action.
