Buhari’s declaration in Bauchi: Tinubu is incoming president

    • Why North should vote for ex-governor, by Lawan, Gbajabiamila
    • ‘PDP abandoned region to Boko Haram’

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential standard bearer, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will succeed him.

“Tinubu is the incoming president,” he said while paying a courtesy call on the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Rilwan Adamu, in his palace yesterday.

A huge crowd of party faithful and supporters welcomed the APC campaign train to Bauchi, the capital of Bauchi State.

House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila explained why the North should vote for Tinubu, saying that voting for him will validate their loyalty to the president and the ruling party.

He said Tinubu had stood behind President Buhari in two previous elections, adding that it was time the supporters of the president also rallied around him for the February poll.

APC Deputy National Publicity Secretary Yakubu Ajaka said the days of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were numbered in the State House, advising Governor Bala Mohammed to prepare his handover notes.

Urging the people to reject PDP, Senate President Ahmad Lawan, said the party had abandoned the Northeast to the Boko Haram insurgency.

Before kicking off the rally at the Tafawa Balewa Stadium, Buhari, Tinubu, APC National Chairman Senator Abdullahi Adamu and other party leaders paid a courtesy call on the Emir of Bauchi.

The president was led to the ancient palace by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who thanked him for the Kolomani oil wells at the boundary of Bauchi and Gombe states.

President Buhari tendered his stewardship, saying: “In 2003 and 2012, I visited all the 774 local government areas in this country, and in 2019 when I was contesting for the second term, I visited all the states.

“So, there, I made the promise and the pledge that I will serve Nigeria and Nigerians to the best of my ability.”

The Emir thanked the president for the visit and urged politicians to play politics without bitterness.

While commending the governor for ensuring a level playing ground for all political parties in the state, the royal father wished the president a safe trip.

PDP abandoned the Northeast to Boko Haram, says Lawan

Lawan alleged that the PDP had abandoned the vulnerable Nigerians in the Northeast region at the mercy of Boko Haram.

He commended President Buhari for technically eradicating insurgency in the region.

He said: “Mr President, our father, mentor, the PDP abandoned the Northeast to Boko Haram until you came into office.

“In 2015, when you were sworn in, you liberated us. We in the Northeast are the most important beneficiaries of your administration because Boko Haram was technically defeated by the time you came into power.”

The crowd erupted with joy when Tinubu entered the stadium. He was cheered by supporters carrying posters, beating drums and chanting solidarity songs in Hausa.

Tinubu was accompanied by his running mate Kashim Shettima, Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, Gombe State Governor Mohammed Inuwa, Jigawa State Governor Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, an elder statesman, Yerima Giade, Senator Musa Salisu, Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, Salisu Ibrahim Musa Matori, former Governors Isa Yuguda and Mohammed Abubakar, and other members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Working Committees (NWC).

The Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong, predicted victory for Tinubu.

He said: “We have no choice but to support the Tinubu-Shettima presidential ticket because that is what President Buhari wants. He wants a successor and he has found that in Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

APC Deputy National Woman Leader Maryam Katagum praised Buhari’s legacy while assuring that Bauchi women would vote for Tinubu.

Gbajabiamila said the loyal people of Bauchi will display their loyalty to Buhari by voting for the ruling party.

He said: “It’s time to recognise the love, the loyalty you have for Mr President. Bauchi is Buhari, Buhari is Bauchi and if the president is sitting down here for a campaign rally for a purpose, then, he is sitting down here to tell you that he is for APC and for Tinubu and Shettima.

“If you look to my right on top of this tower, there are two flags flying high above everywhere else. That’s the APC flag, that’s the same way the APC flag should tower above every other flag in this election.”

Lawan added: “There is something to be said about Bauchi people. You’re an extremely loyal set of people, you reward track record. Asiwaju stood with your brother, your son, through thick and thin.

“At that time, another candidate abandoned your brother, your father. It’s that time to reward loyalty.

“So, ladies and gentlemen, my brothers and sisters, when you go to the polls, Asiwaju won’t walk alone, he is going to work with the team from Bauchi.”

Prepare your handover notes, Bauchi APC tells Bala Mohammed

In a statement in Abuja, Ajaka said the huge turnout “is a verdict on the maladministration of the PDP in Bauchi state, which people are yearning for urgent change.”

Ajaka said: “Tinubu is a promise keeper and he will keep to his promise with the state and the party members if given the opportunity.

“He won’t forget this show of love which he received today in Bauchi during our presidential campaign rally.

“By February 25, it will dawn on the PDP elements in Bauchi that it is already over. I want to assure the people of Bauchi State and Nigerians that the state specifically would witness another success story by bringing back the government of the APC under the leadership of Alhaji Sadique Abubakar.

“The PDP-led government in Bauchi State should be preparing its handover notes by now because the APC is winning both the presidency for Asiwaju and the governorship election for Sadique Abubakar by a landslide.”

In his prepared speech, which he could not read at the venue, Tinubu promised to consolidate on gains of the Buhari government to foster prosperity across the country.

“Mr President, you have shown them that our party is a party of thinkers and doers; people who can find a way where there is none. We thank you for that.

“And it is this spirit of finding a way in the middle of nowhere, of drawing water from dried wells that we seek to consolidate when we succeed in getting the mandate of Nigerians.

“At a time of dwindling revenues and global economic crises, we need to explore all available resources that could help resolve our development challenges. It is for this reason that projects like Kolmani and AKK gas pipeline started by the Buhari administration will be accelerated under my leadership.”

Tinubu, who shed light on his blueprint for the nation, added: “We will create wealth through value addition across all the major planks of our economy.

“We will make farming profitable and support agro-allied industries that will help us process what we produce, instead of just selling raw produce. We will bring forth prosperity, Insha Allah!”

Tinubu also promised to prioritise security in order to engender the right environment for businesses to thrive.

“Our security forces will be adequately empowered to respond to residual challenges we are facing. You will have the peaceful environment you require to engage in productive enterprise.

“My dear people of Bauchi State, I urge you to offer me the same support you have always accorded our party, the APC, and even more. You have always loved President Buhari and his party. I count on you for victory.”

Stranded passengers lament 14-hour flights delay

Ground handling and ramp service workers at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos yesterday returned to work after disrupting international flights for 14 hours.

Their resumption of work followed the intervention by industry regulators and stakeholders as well as fruitful meetings between the  Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO Aviance) Plc and aviation unions.

NAHCO, the employer of the striking workers,  handles check-in, boarding and ramp services for several international airlines such as Air France/ KLM, Qatar, Ethiopian Airlines, Delta Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Turkish Air as well as Nigeria’s Air Peace.

The industry regulators that intervened include Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

Ground handling and ramp service workers are persons who provide ancillary services to airlines.  They had embarked on strike over what they termed “poor welfare.”

NAHCO Aviance management said in a statement after the meeting that some resolutions were reached that made the workers go back to work.

The resolutions are that NAHCO Aviance should withdraw the suit it instituted at the National Industrial Court (NIC) against the workers’ unions; resumption of negotiation on staff welfare beginning tomorrow and non-victimisation of any worker because of the strike.

NAHCO Aviance   Group Executive Director, Dr Sola Obabori, appreciated the understanding of the airlines and passengers who were inconvenienced and aviation stakeholders for their intervention.

As of   6.30 pm yesterday,  scores of intending passengers at the new international wings of the MMIA and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja,  were seen with their luggage awaiting information from the airlines on the next line of action.

Passengers booked on Africa World Airlines, Air Peace, South African Airways, Qatar Airways and ASKY Airlines, who  were the worst hit, lamented that the strike had disrupted their travel schedules

At the NAIA,  Jennifer Osezele, a Master”s student in the United Kingdom said her flight scheduled with Qatar Airways for 3. 20 pm was rescheduled for  1 a.m.

Osezele lamented that by rescheduling of the flight, she would be spending hours at the airport before her new departure time.

She said: “The staff did not attend to any passengers. I have been here with my friends for about three hours now for an international flight scheduled for 3:20 p.m. to Manchester by Qatar Airways.

“If the flight is to be cancelled, at least they should have let us know on time. Later, we received information that our fight had been rescheduled till 1 a.m. So we are going to be here for a long time.

“That means I am going to spend about 12 hours at the airport. There are people here with kids. Their kids are crying. They don’t know what to do; if to return home or to stay. “

Another intending passenger, Subhas Chamdma, who was going to Delhi, India with Ethiopian Airlines, said his flight departure in real time was 1.25 pm. but it was changed to 6.40 p.m.

“I have been here since morning. I am going to Delhi. We did not receive any information from them for long before the flight delay message came in,” he lamented.

Before the strike was shelved,  a Qatar flight from Doha was turned back from landing at the NAIA, thereby causing family members who had come to pick up their loved ones to feel worried.

COVID-19: Incoming travellers to provide vaccination evidence

The Federal Government yesterday announced that international travellers to Nigeria would now be required to show evidence of Coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccination.

It explained that the new directive followed a recent upsurge in COVID-19 cases in China, Japan, the United States (U.S.) and other countries.

The Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) on COVID-19 on December 12, 2022, relaxed safety measures.

The Director of Port Health Services,  Federal Ministry of Health, Dr Geofferry Okatubo, made this known while giving updates on COVID-19 and other health concerns in the country in Abuja.

He said: “As you are all aware that the Presidential Steering Committee announced the relaxation of the COVID-19 safety measures in Nigeria some few weeks ago. However, following the reported upsurge in COVID-19 in China, Japan, the U.S., and other countries, Port Health Services has continued to heighten surveillance at the point of entry and has resumed checks of passengers’ vaccination status, and we provide traffic data on inbound passengers from all over the world.

“International travellers arriving in Nigeria are now to provide their evidence of vaccination at the point of entry. Consequently, unvaccinated passengers arriving from other countries will have to be vaccinated at the airport.

“The Minister of Health recently approved that Port Health Services should meet with other stakeholders such as the NCDC, Ministry of Aviation, Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and others, over the use of rapid diagnostic test kits for testing any suspected ill passenger at our point of entry.

“Port Health Services officers are still positioned at the seaport and offshore platforms to screen all crew and passengers coming into the country.”

Kogi governor: my support for Tinubu unshaken

Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has said the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, will convincingly win next month’s election.

Bello, who was featured on Channels Television, Politics on Sunday, said because he believes in the capacity of APC’s standard bearer, he and other leaders in the north were solidly backing Tinubu and working for him to record a landslide.

The governor, who denied the rumour that he was no longer supporting Tinubu, urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to investigate and bring to book media houses spreading falsehood.

The governor said he remains committed to the Tinubu and Kassim Shettima ticket, saying he could envision what the duo would do for the country.

Bello said: “I woke up to see that statement in the air. In this particular instance, there is no fire, talk less of smoke. It is totally fake news. It is unfortunate.

“The current electoral law empowers INEC to investigate news like this and consequently punish anyone who has been found to have gone against the law.”

He said those spreading fake news were indirectly popularising the APC and his candidate, Asiwaju Tinubu.

The governor said: “I contested for the ticket of the party, but God almighty gave it to our leader, Asiwaju Tinubu. And I have been learning from him because he is the general of the game.

“Immediately after the primary, I was the first to openly come out to give my blessing and endorse Tinubu. I believe in him. I study and envision what he would do for this country.

“My prayer and determination are to continue to do all my best for Tinubu to win in this general election.

“Those spreading fake news are making the presidential campaign of Tinubu smoother and we are going to deliver overwhelmingly.

“The victory is going to be supersonic and a landslide for our candidate, party and all other candidates.

“I can tell you that all other APC governors in the north are working together to ensure that we record a resounding victory. All of us from the north, keep fidelity and our promises and we don’t deceive.

“My commitment to Bola Ahmed Tinubu is over 100 per cent and I remain an ardent supporter, mobiliser, campaigner and driver of our leader and the president-in-waiting, Asiwaju Tinubu, and my brother, His Excellency, Senator Kassim Shettima.”

On the fake news, Bello said: “Of course, you can come up with fake news, but it is incumbent on all agencies to quickly take action against perpetrators of fake news.”

He gave the media house 24 hours to retract and tender an unreserved apology for the gaffe it committed.

“I am expecting that the management and that media house (not The Nation) will retract that publication and tender a widespread public apology within 24 hours, else I’ll brief my lawyers to do the needful,’’ the governor warned.

  • Atiku lacks character to lead Nigeria, says APC PCC

Atiku lacks character to lead Nigeria, says APC PCC

TO the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council (APC PCC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar lacks the character to be Nigeria’ President.

The PCC insisted that the one-time vice president is unfit to lead the country because he can be an easy target for compromises that will be against the national interest.

It was reacting to the opposition party’s call on the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) to investigate Tinubu.

In a statement by its Director, Media and Publicity, Bayo Onanuga in Abuja, the APC PCC said Atiku lacked the moral justification to make such demand.

Onanuga maintained that by his action and utterances, the PDP flagbearer has shown that he cannot be trusted to manage the resources of Nigeria.

The statement reads: “It is obvious that the PDP and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar are yet to recover from the bombshell released last week by the APP PCC, which questioned the morality of the candidate to remain in the race, following his damaging self-confession.

“At the press conference, we called on the security agencies to arrest, investigate and prosecute Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president for running Special Purpose Vehicles (SPV) used to loot the treasury of the country, in what is now known as #Atikugate.

“Since the scandal broke out, along with legal action to compel anti-graft agencies to perform their role, Atiku and his party, PDP have laboured in vain to deflect and cover up with their series of ad hominem arguments.

“Instead of Atiku to apologise to Nigerians for abusing his office and position of trust in the past, Atiku’s spokesmen continue to dig deeper into the hole they already found themselves in by raising many false allegations against our candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“The latest chapter in Atiku and PDP’s comedy is the rehash of old tales and fables that have no basis in facts and reality against our candidate.

“Our stand remains that Atiku Abubakar lacks the character to be the president of Nigeria.

“He is unfit to lead our country because he can be an easy target for compromises that will be against national interest.

“Atiku in deeds and words has shown that he cannot be trusted to manage the resources of Nigeria.

“And we believe that the characters who still parade themselves as his spokespersons have lost their minds. This is why they think Nigerians can be swayed by all their deliberate falsehoods and the lies they manufacture every day against Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to deceive the public when they should all be remorseful for the legendary corruption of their boss.”
