JUST IN: We complied with all rules during election, Atiku/PDP’s witnesses tell court

Two former members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), who worked as ad-hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during the last elections, said they complied with all rules and regulations in carrying out their assignment.

The two – Alheri Ayuba and Sadiya Mohammed Haruna – who were subpoenaed witnesses of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, spoke while testifying on Saturday as the petitioners’ 17th and 18th petitiners’ witnesses before the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC).

Ayuba and Haruna said the whole process went well with the exception of the hitch they experienced while trying to upload the images of the result sheets immediately at their polling units, using the BVAS machine.

They however said they failed to include, in the written statements, their inability to upload the results.

Led in evidence by petitioners’ lawyer, Chris Uche (SAN),  Ayuba and Haruna said they served as polling unit Presiding Officers in Abuja.

The witnesses adopted their written statements after lawyers to the respondents – Kemi Pinheiro (SAN) for INEC, Emmanuel Ukala (SAN) for President Bola Tinubu and Solomon Umoh (SAN) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) – raised objection to the admission of their testimonies.

The court has adjourned further hearing in the petition till Tuesday at 2pm.

Hearing has however commenced in the petition by Peter Obi and the Labour Party (LP)

JUST IN: Emefiele not in our custody, says DSS

The Department of State Services (DSS) has said the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria Governor (CBN) Godwin Emefiele, is not in its custody.

They were speculations on Friday that soon after Emefiele was suspended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Service arrested him.

The Service had however kept mum over the development.

Spokesman of the Service, Dr Peter Afunanya, in a WhatsApp message on Saturday said: “Currently, Emefiele is not with the DSS.”

    He gave no further information.

    • Folashodun Shonubi to act as Central Bank helmsman

The suspension yesterday of Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele by President Bola Tinubu may have been triggered by the probe instituted against him last week by the House of Representatives, The Nation learnt last night.

News of the CBN governor’s suspension was broken by the Director of Information in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation OSGF (OSGF), Willie Bassey.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended the Central Bank Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, CFR, from office with immediate effect,” Bassey said in a statement.

“This is sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.

“Mr Emefiele has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of investigation and the reforms,” he added.

The apex bank’s deputy governor in charge of Operations, Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, was asked to take over in an acting capacity.

Sources in Abuja told The Nation that sequel to Emefiele’s suspension he has been barred from leaving the Federal Capital and may be probed by the Department of State Services (DSS) for alleged terrorism financing.

It was gathered that the House of Representatives’ inquisition into the activities of the CBN under Emefiele has opened many cans of worms, such that the authorities felt compelled to send him home to allow for proper investigation.

“There is a lot of dossier on him (Emefiele), so it is only proper that he should step aside in order to allow for proper investigation into the allegations preferred against him,” the source said.

Another source familiar with the development said: “The CBN governor’s probe by the Reps is just a prelude to what may follow in a few days.”

An ad hoc committee of the House  investigating the alleged missing 48 million barrels of Bonny Light crude had summoned Emefiele to provide details on the N32.5 billion said to have been paid to two companies — Messrs GSCL Consulting and Bizplus — without formal records.

The Green Chamber is also investigating an alleged payment of $200 million to the firms for “consultancy service.”

Speaking at the investigative hearing, Mark Gbillah, chairman of the ad hoc committee, said available records showed that the CBN paid N16.5 billion to each of the two companies on the same day.

Gbillah added that the amount was withdrawn by the companies within two months.

The lawmaker said it was important for Nigerians to know why the apex bank paid the said amount to the companies, especially when Abubakar Malami, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, denied knowledge of the payments.

Embattled Emefiele barred from leaving Abuja

Mr. Emefiele, according to sources, has been restricted to Abuja for now and there were indications last night that the DSS might revisit its investigation of him for alleged terrorism financing.

It was also learnt that Emefiele may not return to his office and the Presidency technically removed the CBN Governor through suspension instead of outright sack because Tinubu was constrained by the law.

By the CBN Act, Emefiele can only be removed by two-thirds majority of the Senate, which will hold its 9th valedictory session today.

A source claimed that although Emefiele was advised by some forces to resign, he underrated the signal.

The source said Emefiele assumed he could earn the confidence of the new government.

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that Emefiele has many pending allegations against him but DSS probe was “crucial and interesting.”

A reliable source said: “Since it was a security matter, former President Muhammadu Buhari did not stop DSS from investigating Emefiele. But some members of the cabal in the Presidency frustrated the DSS.

“Now it is obvious the DSS may probe him because the encumbrances are no longer there. He had gone to the DSS headquarters for grilling before pressure came from some influential forces to halt the move.”

His suspension last night was soon followed by speculations that he had been arrested by the DSS.

But the spokesman for the DSS, Dr. Peter Afunanya, could not immediately confirm the arrest.

In a chat with our correspondent, he wrote: “Inundated. I may not be able to make any confirmations NOW, please.”

On the likely recall of Emefiele from suspension, a government source said “it is remote. He has been technically removed like the administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan did to a former CBN Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

“By the provision of Section 11 of the CBN Act 2007, the President cannot unilaterally remove a CBN Governor, Deputy Governor or a director.

The section says that a CBN Governor can be sacked “provided that the removal of the Governor shall be supported by two-thirds majority of the Senate praying that he be so removed.”

“With the 9th Senate holding its valedictory session today, the legal advice available to President Bola Tinubu was suspension.

“But the curtain is already drawn on Emefiele’s tenure. Apart from the DSS factor, there are other issues he may need to clarify.”

The government source claimed that “the CBN Governor was prevailed upon by many sources but he underrated the advice. He assumed he could earn the confidence of this administration.”

A source said Emefiele “has not been arrested but I know he will not be allowed to venture out of Abuja.”

The source recalled how the DSS had, last December, sought to file charges of money laundering and terrorism financing against him.

The department said at the time that it was investigating Emefiele for “various acts of terrorism financing, fraudulent activities and his involvement in economic crimes of national security dimension.”

It claimed he was involved in “fraud, mismanagement of interventionist funds, round tripping and conferment of financial benefit to self and others.”

The DSS had averred, in the suit: FHC/ABJ/CS/2255/2022 that its preliminary investigation showed various acts of terrorism financing, fraudulent activities perpetrated by Emefiele and his involvement in economic crimes of national security dimension.

‘An end to a turbulent era’

Reacting to Emefiele’s suspension, Uche Uwaleke, a financial economist and Professor of Finance and Capital Market in the Department of Banking and Finance of Nasarawa State University Keffi, said: “The Suspension of Godwin Emefelie was long foretold. But this announcement caught not a few by surprise.

“The President cannot sack the CBN Governor, but he can suspend, which is what the President has done. Recall that Mr Sanusi Lamido Sanusi was equally suspended from office by the Jonathan administration. This Suspension will mark an end to a turbulent era.”

He added: “Godwin Emefiele will be remembered for implementing big ideas such as the Anchor Borrower Programme, the RT200, the eNaira and a raft of interventions which helped to stimulate the economy during periods of economic recession.”

Uwaleke stated that “Emefelie, to a large extent, succeeded in ensuring financial sector stability going by the prudential ratios. His FOREX demand management policies, especially the 41 items not qualified for FOREX, promoted import substitution, conserved external reserves and ensured relative stability in exchange rates.

“It would be unfair to blame him for the current high inflation rate since most of the causative factors are beyond the control of the CBN.

“On the flip side, he will also be remembered for the currency redesign exercise which didn’t go down well with Nigerians, and the CBN Ways and Means, which grew astronomically during his tenure.

“His greatest mis-step was his attempt to join the list of presidential candidates. All said, I think he deserves some rest now.

He was said to have applied for overseas study leave in the twilight of the Buhari administration.

A Presidency source at the time informed The Nation that there was an application from Mr. Emefiele seeking such approval.

“I heard the CBN Governor applied to the President for study leave, but I don’t know if the President has granted the application,” the source said.

Emefiele was appointed to the office on June 4, 2014 by former President Goodluck Jonathan to replace Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

Sanusi himself was suspended on February 2, 2014 for alleged “financial recklessness and misconduct,” after alleging that $20bn in oil revenue had gone missing.

Subsidy: Nigeria no longer Father Christmas to neighbouring countries – Tinubu

    • Says payments were bringing the country to her knees
    • Pay all accruals into Federation Account, Finance Commissioners urge the president

President Bola Tinubu said yesterday that Nigeria could no longer act as Father Christmas to its neighbours hence the decision by the federal government to remove the subsidy on fuel.

Tinubu, at a parley with traditional rulers from across the country, likened the subsidy while it lasted, to an elephant that was determined to bring Nigeria to its knees.

He appealed to the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN) delegation led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Saad Abubakar, to help the government secure the understanding of the people at the grassroots on the situation.

He said the pump prices of fuel would ultimately come down.

“You paid attention to what I’ve been doing, I’m grateful. You paid attention to the subsidy removal. Why should we, in a good sense, in good heart feed smugglers, be a Father Christmas to the neighbouring countries, even though they say not every day is Christmas?” he said.

“So the elephant that was going to bring Nigeria to its knees is the subsidy, a country that cannot pay salaries and you say potentials. We encourage ourselves. I think we did the right thing.

“It’s in your hands, as the closest people to the local government, to the grassroots, to persuade our people to have the understanding that the price will be high now, but it will go down and any roadblocks on the way to our progress, we’ll remove, I pledge.”

On security, the President reiterated his pledge to Nigerians to prioritise the sector until every Nigerian “goes to sleep with his two eyes closed”.

He emphasized that the unity and togetherness of the country could not be compromised, saying that every region of the country would get its due.

“We are going to tackle youth unemployment. It is only when we have prosperity for the country that we can create jobs that will employ our youths”, he said.

Condemning crude oil theft in the Niger Delta region by a ‘tiny percentage’ of the population, Tinubu said it was counterproductive to the growth of the economy.

“We need to tame those involved in this sabotage and we will work as hard as possible to ensure that the diversity of this country is used for its prosperity, growth and stability”, he said.

President Tinubu told the traditional rulers that, with the campaigns and elections over, he is primed for governance, and his government has already signed a law that extends the retirement age of judicial officers from 65 to 70 years, while also addressing pension reforms.

Equally on electricity, the President said a constitutional amendment signed into law now allows Nigeria’s 36 states to generate electricity.

“That’s devolution of power and that should be our contribution to the developmental projects you are looking for and we will continue in ways that will help our people”, he said.

He assured his guests that his administration would run an open-door policy, adding: ”We are all ears. We are ready to listen at any given time. I promise you an open-door policy and that is the way I will go.

“That open-door policy is for you to call me and send to me at any given time any concern that you might have.

“We may not have it right 100 percent of the time but we must get it right 90 percent of the time for this country”, he said.

Responding to issues raised by the traditional rulers on challenges facing the country, he said: “Worry not because the country is in good hands”.

President Tinubu thanked members of NCTRN for their early visit and prayers for the success of his administration.

“Without your prayers and support, I cannot stand before you as President and I thank you for your support during the campaigns”, he said.

In separate remarks, Sultan Abubaka who is Chairman  of NCTRN, and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi,co-chairman of NCTRN pledged the support and loyalty of traditional rulers from the six geo-political zones to Tinubu.

They assured the President of their continued prayers in his resolve to move the country forward under his Renewed Hope agenda.

The Sultan said:”We are 100 per cent in support of your government and we believe in the will of the Almighty Allah you will move this country forward.

“We will contribute our quota to the development of the country once you reach out to us.”

The Ooni of Ife expressed delight that the country has remained united and focused despite the challenges.

Recounting that the President had said he deserves no pity from anyone because he asked for the job, Oba Ogunwusi  appealed to President Tinubu not to underestimate the power and reach of traditional rulers in complementing the programmes and visions of the new government.

The President and his deputy listened to presentations from representatives from the six geo-political zones, including the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Ibn Umar Al Amin El-Kanemi; the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe; Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero; Amanayabo of Nembe, Edmund Daukoru; Tor Tiv, Prof. James Ayatse; and Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi.

Finance Commissioners laud Tinubu on fuel subsidy removal

The Forum of Commissioners for Finance of Nigeria has commended President Tinubu for removing fuel subsidy.

The outgoing Chairman of the Forum, David Olofu, gave the commendation at a valedictory session for Commissioners for Finance of Nigeria on Thursday night in Abuja.

Olofu who is the immediate past Commissioner for Finance and Economic Planning, Benue State, however advised  the Federal Government to ensure that all accruals from the removal of fuel subsidy should be paid into the Federation Account.

Olofu said, as finance experts, the Forum, like other Nigerians, had long yearned for the subsidy withdrawal.

He said:”We will like to sincerely commend the President for having that political will to do that, first day in office.

“That is what we had been yearning for. He came, his first day in office, he was able to achieve that which we have always asked for.”

On how the government  should manage the funds from subsidy removal, Olofu said that the Constitution provides for all federation revenues to go into the federation account.

“Nobody has any authority whatsoever to deduct any amount from the federation revenue.

“So, I will align myself with the position of the Constitution and recommend that all the accruals go into the federation account and let it be disbursed from the federation account,” he said.

He said, however, the Federal Government should come up with policies and programmes that could address the challenges Nigerians are currently facing as a result of increase in the pump price of fuel due to the removal of subsidy.

“I believe that the President has the capacity and knowledge to be able to do that decisively.

“He has already started it by proposing a wage increase for workers but that has to be done alongside with sub-nationals, because the sub-nationals have the bulk of civil servants in this country.

“I believe he is on track but, apart from wage increase, we also have to look at issues of infrastructure because we believe strongly that if we can wrap up infrastructure in this country, it will also help to improve the living standard and bring down the cost of living,” he said.

Olofu appealed to Nigerians to be patient saying, the long term benefits of what has been done by the President far outweighs the short term pains people were going through.

For the incoming Chairman of the Forum, Wale Akinterinwa, he commended his predecessor, saying that Olofu did a very good job while leading the forum.

“He has actually elevated the forum to a much higher level than he met it. Be that as it may, I will try to ensure that I continue from where he stopped.

“I will continue to sustain the good relationship he has created with all the revenue generating agencies, as well as the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation,” he said.

Akinterinwa who is the Commissioner of Finance in Ondo State, reiterated that the removal of fuel subsidy was long overdue.

Presidential election was well conducted, Atiku’s witnesses tell court

    • •Tinubu, Shettima, APC’s objection stalls video evidence by Obi, LP

The Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) yesterday heard from three witnesses called by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and the party that the February 25 election went well in the states where they served as election officials.

Grace Ajagbonna, Abidemi Joseph and Obosa Edosa told the court that they were engaged as ad-hoc staff by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and served as Presiding Officers in Kogi, Niger and Edo states.

Ajagbonna, Joseph and Edosa said the whole election process went well where they served and that they complied with all the rules and regulations governing the election.

Led in evidence by petitioners’ lawyer, Chris Uche (SAN), Ajagbonna – the 14th witness of the petitioners – adopted her written statement, which was admitted by the court despite objection to its admissibility by counsel to the respondents.

Under cross-examination by counsel to INEC, Abubakar Mahmoud (SAN), Ajagbonna said she accredited voters, using the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) device, and complied with all the instructions issued by INEC to ad hoc staff during their training.

She said: “The accreditation process went well. The voting process also went well. I collated the results and recorded them in Form EC8A by myself. I signed and the party agents also signed.

“At the end of the whole exercise, I took the Form EC8A to the Ward Collation Centre and submitted it to the Ward Collation Officer.”

Ajagbonna said all other aspects of the election process also went smoothly except the transmission of the presidential election result.

“My Lord, to be sincere, I was not happy. I was not happy that I was not able to transmit the result of the presidential election. Everything else went peacefully. The election went well,” the witness said.

Asked if she wrote her statement herself, she answered in the affirmative, although she was unable to explain what she meant by the word “simultaneously.”

She had claimed in her written statement that she tried uploading the Form EC8A and election results “simultaneously but I was unsuccessful.”

Asked by Mahmoud what she meant by trying to upload Form EC8A and result simultaneously, since both referred to the same item, witness said she meant “continuously or one after the other.”

Under cross examination by Yusuf Ali (SAN) lawyer to President Bola Tinubu, Ajagbonna said all the party agents signed the Form EC8A before she took the picture with the BVAS device and later submitted it at the Ward Collation Centre.

While being cross-examined by lawyer to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), Ajagbonna said by their training, no election official or party agent was expected to leave his/her duty post during the election.

Her words:”By our training, nobody else is allowed at the polling unit except the presiding officer, collation officer, party agents, security officials and the voters.

“A collation officer or agent and others who were assigned roles are expected to stay at their duty posts during the election; not moving about.”

Joseph gave similar evidence, but said under cross examination by Ali that they were taught during training not to compel any party agent to sign result sheets, adding that the choice to sign or decline was that of the party agents to make.

Edosa said the election process went well but for her inability to upload the result at her polling unit.

She said:”I did the accreditation using the BVAS machine. The process of accreditation went very well.  Voting went very well too. We sorted and counted the votes and recorded the scores in the Form EC8A.

“I entered the figures manually. After that, the party agents and I signed the Form EC8A. I tried to upload the result using the BVAS machine, but it failed.

“What I was to upload was the image of the Form EC8A, which I had filled manually. Form EC8A is the result sheet.

“At the end of everything, I took the Form EC8A to the Ward Collation Centre and submitted it to the Ward Collation Officer. Besides the transmission, the other processes went very well.”

Under cross examination by Olujinmi, Edosa, like the other previous witnesses, said it was their first time using the BVAS device since their pre-assignment training by INEC.

At the conclusion of Edosa’s testimony, Uche applied for adjournment, which lawyers to the respondents supported.

The court subsequently adjourned further hearing till 10 am today.

The presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP) Mr. Peter Obi and his party later resumed the presentation of their case, calling an employee of Channels Television, Lucky Obewho-Isawode, whose company was subpoenaed to tender video evidence of their report of two press conferences addressed by INEC Chairman, Prof. Yakubu Mahmood and National Commissioner, Festus Okoye.

Petitioners’ lawyer, Jibrin Okutepa (SAN), tendered the video recordings brought by the witness, which were stored in two flash drives.

Kemi Pinheiro (SAN) for INEC, Akin Olujinmi (SAN) for Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettma, and Afolabi Fashanu (SAN) for the APC objected to the tendering of the items and the witness’ statement.

They argued that the items were not front-loaded as required by the 2022 Electoral Act.

The court however admitted them, promising to rule on the respondents’ objection when giving its judgment.

Read Also: UPDATED: Late service of witnesses’ statements stalls hearing in Atiku/PDP’s petition

Proceedings were however stalled when Olujinmi and Solomon Umoh (SAN) who took over from Fashanu objected to the playing of the videos in court.

They argued that it amounted to an ambush and denial of fair hearing when they were not served with the videos before now to enable them watch them and prepare for cross examination.

Olujinmi and Umoh said they were entitled to being allowed to preview the videos before being played in court.

Okutepa argued otherwise, insisting that there was no law that mandated his clients to serve on the respondents before hearing, video evidence produced by a subpoenaed witness.

On that note, the court adjourned to Saturday at 2pm.

Meanwhile, the hearing in the petition by the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) could not continue yesterday owing to the inability of the parties in the litigation to access the judgment given by the Supreme Court on Shettima’s ‘double nomination’.

The court had, on May 30, halted proceedings on the petition upon being informed about the May 26 judgment dismissing a case by the PDP in which the party sought to void the joint ticket of Tinubu and Shettima as presidential and vice presidential candidates of the APC in the last election.

The PDP had claimed that Shettima violated the Electoral Act by allowing himself to be nominated twice for two different offices – Borno Central Senatorial District and Vice President.

The PEPC ordered the parties to study the Supreme Court judgment and report to court on its effect on the APM petition, which raised the same issue as in the PDP case.

When the case was mentioned on June 2, Yakubu Maikasua (SAN) for the APM, told the court that his client was yet to access a certified true copy (CTC) of the judgment to enable it take a position on its effect on the status of their petition.

Lawyers to other parties, including Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) for the APC, also confirmed the development, following which Maikasua applied that the case be further adjourned till June 9.

At the mention of the case yesterday, Maikasua said the situation remained the same as the Supreme Court had not made the judgment available. He prayed the court for a new date to enable his client open its case.

Mahmoud for INEC, Fagbemi for APC, Olujinmi for Tinubu and Shettma, and Yomi Aliyu (SAN) for Kabir Masari (the APC placeholder) did not oppose the request by Maikasua.

They expressed hope that the judgment would be available before the next date.

The court adjourned the petition to June 19.

President Bola Tinubu wants traditional rulers across the country to join him in ensuring fair play in the emergence of the leadership of the 10th National Assembly next week.

Tinubu told representatives of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN) who visited him in Abuja that their input in managing democracy in the build-up to the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly was crucial.

Ijaw national leader, Chief Edwin Clark, who also spoke yesterday on the coming election of the new leadership for the National Assembly, appealed to senators-elect to handle the country’s fragility with utmost care in picking their President.

The leadership of Labour Party (LP) is scheduled to meet this weekend to decide who the party’s incoming federal legislators should support for the positions of Senate President and deputy president as well as House of Representatives Speaker and Deputy Speaker.

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara declared yesterday that legislators from his state are firmly in support of the  All Progressives Congress (APC) preferred choices of Chief Godswill Akpabio as Senate President and Tajudeen Abbas as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Tinubu, at his meeting with the traditional rulers led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Saad Abubakar, specifically urged the royal fathers to counsel their subjects interested in elective positions on the need to manage their ambitions and create harmony within the legislature.

He stressed that while he is prepared to work with any leader chosen by the federal lawmakers, the Nigeria project is of paramount importance to him.

“We have a democracy that we must manage. I need your help in managing that democracy,” he told them.

He added: “Summon our ambitious people that want to be officers of the house that we have only two chairs: Senate President, one chair, the Speaker, one chair.

“If there are six people struggling in the same environment, they will choke.

“So it’s only through your counsel, your responses to them that we can harmonise this and take off very well.

“To me, I can work with anyone. But the Nigerian project is of paramount importance to me. That’s why I’m here. Nigeria must survive. Nigeria must develop. Nigeria must make progress.”

He spoke against the background of the insistence of some legislators to go against the micro-zoning of the leadership of the Senate and House of Representatives.

Edwin Clark urges Senators to handle country’s fragility with care

The Ijaw national leader, Chief Edwin Clark, who appears to be on the same page with Tinubu on which part of the country should produce the Senate President this time around, appealed to senators-elect to handle the country’s fragility with utmost care as they elect their next President on Tuesday.

Clark in an open letter to the Senators-elect said the tension over who occupies what position in the 10th Senate was already over heating the polity and “hurting the fragile peace and unity we are currently having in our beloved country.”

He said while the division sparked by the race for the NASS leadership positions were not new in the country, the senators-elect should “handle this fragility with utmost care.

He said: “It is your duty as the legislative arm of government to produce during your term a united country where the citizens genuinely trust one another, regard themselves as equal citizens and as brothers and sisters.

“Our division is hindering us from taking our pride of place both in the African continent and globally.

“It is time to heal our land, and in so doing, what I expect of the 10th Senate is to give the position of Senate President to a Christian Senator from the southern part of the country.

“It is only fair, equitable and just, to do so. We have their Excellencies, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senator Kashim Shetima as President and Vice President of the country, respectively. Both of them are Muslims.

“The Chief Justice of the Federation, Olukayode Ariwoola, is a Muslim. Making a Muslim the Senate President will be unacceptable to any discerning mind that thinks well of this country as it will mean that the three arms of government are all headed by Muslims.

“It is also to be noted that the person tipped to be the Speaker of the House of Representatives is equally a Muslim.”

He also reminded those agitating for another Northerner to pick the number three seat of how President Tinubu had to sacrifice the vice president slot in 2014.

“Nigerians and indeed those agitating for this unequal and unjust treatment to be meted out to Christians should remember what happened in 2014. Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu was to be the running mate to General Muhammadu Buhari, rtd, under the ticket of the All-Progressives Congress (APC).

“It was the same party leaders who objected to this arrangement on the grounds that a Muslim-Muslim ticket is not suitable for Nigeria. Sen. Tinubu listened to voice of reason and nominated Prof. Yemi Osinbajo for the position of the Vice President. What has changed now?

“Once again, I appeal to the 10th Senate that as they choose their leaders, should be directed by true sense of reasoning. The position should be given to a Christian southerner.

“I appeal to the northerners to look into their stand again. The Muslims need the Christians and the Christians need the Muslims. No one group should think that they can do it alone.

We won’t compromise support for Akpabio, Abbas, says Fubara

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara declared that federal lawmakers from his state were firmly behind the APC preferred choices for the NASS leadership positions.

Fubara spoke during a meeting with the National Assembly members-elect from the state at the Executive Council Chambers of Government House, Port Harcourt.

The collective decision, according to him, is to advance Nigeria’s interest.

His Special Assistant on Media, Boniface Onyedi, said in a statement that the governor charged the incoming lawmakers to stick to the declared interest of the state by voting for the preferred choices.

He admonished the members-elect to always work together as a team to make the desired impact and enjoy the accruing dividends.

Sir Fubara assured the members-elect of continuous support so as to remain relevant in national affairs.

Speaking on behalf of the members-elect, the Senator-elect for Rivers Southeast Senatorial District, Barry Mpigi, commended Fubara for the strategic meeting and pledged that they would certainly work in line with the charge of the governor as the leader of the state.

LP to decide on choice of candidate weekend

The Labour Party is scheduled to decide this weekend on who to support for the positions of presiding officers of the National Assembly this weekend, its National Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, said in Abuja while the party’s only governor Alex Otti (Abia State) asked LP’s incoming federal legislators to work for the people that elected them and deliver the dividends of democracy to them.

Both Labour Party leaders spoke at a meeting with Senators elect and Reps elect on which candidates to support for the incoming leadership.

Otti informed them of this week’s meeting between President Tinubu and state governors and enjoined the members-elect to work for the people who elected them and ensure that the dividends of democracy was delivered to them.

The Chairman of the party who briefed the governor on the series of meetings so far held to decide who to support for the Senate Presidency and House of Representatives speakership and their respective deputies, said they would take a decision on the choice of candidates not later than today.

He said: “Where we are right now is that the National Assembly is on the verge of being inaugurated and leadership is expected to emerge both in the Senate and in the House of Representatives.

“It will appear as if some of our members are divided along some political lines and so, we have had series of this engagement.

“The last one was on Monday where we resolved unanimously that we are going to make the decision on Friday, which is tomorrow or Saturday.

“So, one of the great leaders of the party, we are grateful that you brought us together this evening considering background and circumstances of the party, looking at the mood of the nation which led to the Obidient movement that eventually culminated into the election of all our members, we must be very conscious of our behaviours, we must be conscious of what we do.

“Expectations from the people are very high, people see us those elected on this platform as those that will save the country and save them and therefore, the exceptions are high.

“Therefore, we must watch our behaviour and our actions. Whether we are going to enjoy the support that we enjoyed from the people depends on the way we conduct ourselves, especially our behaviour in the National Assembly.

“Whether we like it or not, those elected today will become the mirror through which the party will be assessed. They have become the apple and the eyes of the party and therefore, that is why we should always be together, educate ourselves.

“Whatever action we want to take, we sit down and look at the values and overall benefit that action will have on the party collectively and on individuals and that is why we have these meetings and I am happy that you are here to deepen it.”

Akpabio, Abbas intensify lobby of opposition members-elect

Akpabio and Abass are unrelenting in their lobbying of their colleagues ahead of the Tuesday election.

They have been holding crucial meetings with incoming lawmakers from the opposition parties and getting as many of them as possible to pledge their votes.

The Nation gathered that while Akpabio continued to meet the Senators-elect in groups and individually across the country, Abbas and his team during the week met with Rep-elects across party lines in Abuja.

Abass met with the Reps-elect from the three geo-political zones in the north during the week and also slated meeting with those from the three zones in the south for this weekend.

But the intrigues surrounding the election are not about to abate with Senators Abdulaziz Yari, Orji Uzor Kalu and Osita Izunaso refusing to accept the nomination of Akpabio by the APC. The trio are insisting on slugging it out with the party’s choice on the floor of the Red Chambers.

Similarly, Honourables Mukhtar Aliyu Betara and Idris Wase are also yet to step down their ambitions.

The opposition notwithstanding,The Nation gathered that Abass looks good to clinch  the position.

Ikenga Ugochinyere, PDP Rep-elect from Ideato South and North federal constituency in Imo State, said Abbas would win the election with a landslide on Tuesday.

He said: “We may not have a stressful election on June 13 because the majority of the members-elect are already tilting towards the candidacy of Tajudeen Abbas and Benjamin Kalu.

He said that as at last Tuesday 74 of the 92 Reps -elect from the Northwest had declared support for and pledged their votes for Abbas and Kalu.

According to him, 32 of the 51 Reps elect from the North Central are for Abass

“So as we speak, out of the 143 lawmakers that we have from the Northwest and Northcentral, 106 have declared support for Abbas and Kalu ahead of the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly.

“In all, by the time we are done with these programmes, we are looking forward to about 290 members elect pledging their votes to Abbas and Kalu. It is going to be a landslide victory.

“And this is not just because the ruling party endorsed Abbas and Kalu, but more because they are the best men for the job.

“Even those of us who are opposition members-elect agree that the House of Representatives need a competent, reliable and proficient leadership in the next National Assembly.

“Our support for Abbas is more about his capacity and antecedents. He sponsored the highest number of bills so far in the 9th Assembly. He sponsored 74 bills with about 21 signed into law.”

The Nation also learnt that the alliance talks between the camps of Senators Kalu and Yari continued till the weekend with no concrete agreement reached so far.

While Kalu has constantly made it clear that he would not step down for anybody, he is working hard on an alignment with Yari’s camp.

Yari, who is the senator-elect representing Zamfara West, confirmed that talks are ongoing between his team and that of Kalu (Abia North).

“We believe in one Nigeria. About four of us are working together. We’re all working together and we believe that the most important is the constituency that we are, which is theNational Assembly. We are going to continue with this struggle until when we get there. It is not over until it is over”, he said.

You can feel Akpabio’s victory in the country, South-South leaders tell Yari, Kalu, others

The South-South Front (SSF) yesterday described  Akpabio as a genuine patriot who has what it takes to give the Senate a purposeful leadership .

”Nigerians are looking to Senator Godswill Akpabio for leadership. They are looking to him for strength,” He has the skills and experiences to bring about meaningful change in the country,” Chairman of SSF, Chief John Harry, said in a statement.

“The former Akwa Ibom State governor is in a unique position in his political career, with a unique set of experiences and insights for this moment in history. He has the skills and experiences to bring about meaningful change in the country.

”We need a tested, seasoned, wise, strong, courageous, steady hand on the throttle. We need an experienced leader to have a firm hand on the controls. That is why we need Senator Godswill Akpabio as Senate President”.

In a similar statement, natives of Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District of Akwa Ibom resident in Lagos quoted Akpabio as saying that he is the best candidate for the position.

President General of the community, Elder Samuel Usoro, said the former governor’s capacity is “exemplified by his uncommon transformation of Akwa Ibom State” during his tenure.

He said it was also “in the spirit of equity, fairness and justice to allow Senator Akpabio to occupy the exalted position, considering that the South South geo-political zone has yet to produce a senate president since the advent of the Fourth Republic in 1999.”

PDP South West Reps seek Minority Leader

Members of the PDP minority caucus of the House of Representatives from the South West have written to the party leadership to zone the position of Minority Leader in the 10th Assembly to be zone.

They made a position known in a letter dated June 9, 2023 and addressed to the Acting National Chairman, Iliya Umar Damagum.

It was signed by the 15 members.

They are Adedeji Stanley, Bamidele Salam, Sanya Omirin,  Adewale Morufu. A oloru

Akingbaso Festus, Ojo Sunday Makanjuola, Shina Oyodeji, Oluwole Oke, Mudashiru Lukman, Olusoji Adetunji, Abass Adigun, Taofeek Ajilejoro, Oladebo Lanre, Clement Akanni and Dr. Adebayo Adepoju

In the letter sighted by The Nation, the members appealed to the Chairman to intervene in the issue of zoning of the position in the 10th Assembly which is due for inauguration on Tuesday 13th June, 2023

They pointed out that, the position was occupied by the South South during the 8th National Assembly.

The lawmakers said there was an agreement among members-elect of the minority caucus of the House of Representatives that the position of the Minority Leader should be ceded to the Southern part of the country for the next Assembly

They said interest of fairness, equity and justice, the South West should be duly considered to fill this position of Minority Leader in the 10th Assembly

Spouses of lawmakers to watch proceedings from giant screen

Spouses of members of the House of Representatives and other guests will not be allowed into the Chambers of the House on Tuesday to witness the inauguration of the members.

Rather, they will have to watch proceedings through giant screens from a makeshift tent erected in front of the Assembly building.

The Nation gathered at the weekend that every member coming for the inauguration has been asked to come along with only one guest.

In the past, spouses of elected lawmakers were allowed into the chamber to witness the inauguration.

But the inauguration of the 10th Assembly will take place  in  makeshift chambers of both the Senate and the House of Representatives due to ongoing rehabilitation work in the National Assembly.

MOTHER OF ALL SCAMS: How Farmforte owners duped investors of billions of naira, relocated abroad to live large

    • 40,000 investors lose capital, interest
    • Medical doctor loses N40m, retiree N21m

THEIR plan was hatched and carriedout with brutal precision. They opened shop in 2012 as “a value chain development firm focused on transforming the agriculture landscape of Nigeria”. They came out loud on both traditional and social media, showcasing their activities in newspapers and on radio and television stations, not forgetting Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube and other popular online platforms. For effect, they claimed affiliation with an agro-allied company in Europe.

The design of their company’s website, www.farmforte.com, was creative, eye-catching and mobile-friendly.

Playing to the rules for five years, Osazuwa Osayi and Uyi Osayimwense, co-founders and co-CEOs of Farmforte Agro Allied, gathered strength and patronage in government circle and the community.

By this time, they had acquired a state-of-the-art cashew processing facility in Edo State and attracted the state governor, Godwin Obaseki, to commission it alongside other influential figures home and abroad.

The commissioning received flamboyant hype in the media.  Like hunters, they set their trap and waited patiently for their prey. The groundwork settled, they came out in their true colours. First, they branched out of the buying and selling of agricultural products and launched AgropartnershipsTechnology Limited, a digital investment subsidiary of Farmforte. According to them, “the fund and portfolio management company is licensed by the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC)”.

At the same time, they announced that Forest Capital, another subsidiary of Farmforte, had acquired Kayvee Microfinance Bank, “to create greater synergy between socio-economic empowerment, agriculture and the finance sector.

Thus, Farmforte became a digital investment platform, where investors are attracted to investing in farm produce with mouth-watering returns on investments (ROI).

According to the company’s website, “Agropartnerships is a simple and secure collaborative platform that enables you to engage in profitable agribusiness opportunities from your home. You can invest in farms, trade in commodities and count your profits in no time.”

This, it seemed, was the original plan of Osayi and Osayimwense. With a strong digital presence, they gradually reclined into the shadow as investors fall on themselves to invest millions of naira in their mouth-watering products called portfolios, with the hope of doubling their investments within a few months.

People of letters and professionals like bankers, doctors, civil servants, teachers, accountants and retirees fell into their trap.

By December 2021, Farmforte suddenly stopped capital and ROI citing “some challenges”. Two months later, they came out via Zoom conference to allay investors’ fears, and that became the last time anyone heard from the joint CEO.

They shut down their Lagos office, plants, investors’ accounts and all contacts and literally vanished into thin air with billions of naira of investors’ funds.

‘How I lost my N21m gratuity to scam outfit’

Olukanmi Ayoola is yet to come to terms with how a certified accountant like him could fall into the hands of fraudulent young men who conned him of his retirement benefit up to the tune of N21,600,000. He came out in frustration to tell his story “so that people can be aware and they will not go on to scam other innocent people.”

Even at that, he could not afford to use his real name in print for the societal and economic backlash.

He said: “I am a respected person in my community and people come to me for investment advice because I’ve been an accountant all my life,” said Ayoola, who retired in 2021 after more than 30 years in service.

The 62-year-old did not have any premonition of what was about to befall him until he was caught in the web of lies and deceit.

He started by putting small amounts into the Agropartnerships digital platform powered by Farmforte and receiving huge profits on his capital as and when due.

Upon receiving his gratuity, he decided to multiply his investments for bigger profits. Instead, he lost the capital and expected turnover.

Ayoola said: “I came across Farmforte in 2018 when a friend introduced their product called Farmforte Food Valley to me. He said they were reliable and responsible and were into agric.

“Then, the government was talking about agriculture and  the huge investment that was going into it. I picked an interest and began to do an independent investigation.

“I checked out the company’s website and it seemed genuine. So, I started with N500,000. I got my money and ROI after one year.

“Thereafter, I decided to increase the moneyto N1 million, and any time I had excess cash, I would put it in.

“I had money in another investment outlet -money market- and due to government policy, the interest became flat.

“At the same time, I was nearing retirement where I worked. I reasoned that I needed to take a decision now to stand on my own. So, I requested for my retirement benefits and was paid. This was in 2019. I retired same year.

“That was how I invested the whole money into the business, which is exportation of agricultural products. As a son of a farmer, I know a little about it, that there is huge profit in it.

“Agropartnerships claims to be in agro-processing and export with affiliation to a company in Holland. I saw one of it videos where Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki commissioned a large expanse of farmland and a cashew processing plant and there were many local farmers saying they had been selling their products to them. It was very believable.

“I also investigated the SEC website and saw that they  were duly registered with a registration number.

“On top of that, they had not failed to pay up on due dates on my investments. All these gave me confidence that the company was real.”

At this point, Ayoola decided to push all his earnings into the business.

He said: “I started buying all theirproducts: Poultry 02 Investment, Rice Value Chain, ChickenUp Scale, Palm Oil Processing, Cashew Exporting Scheme, and all sorts of products.

“They  were aggressive in the way they advertised their products.  Within six hours, if you didn’t invest in it, they would it had sold out. Any reasonable human being would want to invest.

“They were well organised. I call it organised crime.

“I spread my investments in such a way that as one was getting due, another one was starting.

“I invested N21,600,000 of my money and my ROI also runs into millions of naira.  I’ve not receive a kobo.”

By December 15, 2021, the due date for one of Ayoola’s investments, the proceeds did not come.

“I was alarmed at first, but they wrote a letter to me that they were having some challenges and would pay me in due course.

That, however, became the beginning of Ayoola’s travails.

“I immediately went to their office and met other investors who were agitated and needed answers,” he said.

    Office shut down

In a video on Agropartnerships Facebook page on February 16, Osayimwenme explained the problem: “For a fact the delayed circle payout happened due to two major reasons: first, the global chain supply disruption, which impacted on our ability to obtain parts of our machinery for our processing facility.

“Secondly, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on business operation affected us… We have taken corrective measure to ensure that this never happens again.

“We appreciate your passion, your endurance, and we take seriously our responsibility to ensure the safety of your investment.

“To this end, we have designed specific payout timeline, and we look forward to sharing this with you on the 18th of February.”

Ayoola said: “Two days later, the company addressed us in a town hall meeting on Zoom, and raised our hopes that we would get our money soon.

“That was the last time we heard from them. They closed down their office, shut down their lines and investors’ accounts, and disappeared.”

    ‘I lost N40m’

Ayoola is not alone in his ordeal. A businessman, who wants to be known simply as John, also joined the scheme in 2019.

John said: “I started investing in the company in 2019, and by late 2021, I had just doubled my investment by N20m when the problem erupted.

“I was in their office where I met Ayoola and we started sharing notes.

“Because the transactions are done online, individually, and with no access to other investors, we don’t know ourselves or able to share our stories until it was too late.”

Altogether, John has N40 million locked up in Agropartnerships’accoun.

Another victim, David, who had invested in three portfolios worth over a million naira with Agropartnerships, has a similar story to tell.

He said: “I started with N500,000 in April 2021 and received the interest promptly on the due date.

“The ease with which the profits were paid spurred me into opening two additional portfolios with the firm.

”However, things took a different turn when Farmforte stopped paying capital and interest at the end of 2021.

    Another investor loses N300,000

The loss of another investor, Serah Lawal, is small in comparison to those of Ayoola and John.

Lawal said: “I invested in Agropartnerships Potato Scheme in January 2021 and I was supposed to get my investment and ROI by October 27.

“On the due date, I sent an email to the company and got a reply. They told me that they were going through some challenges and needed to reconsider how they made their payouts.”

She noted that the company promised to pay her by February of the following year (2022), but failed tofulfil the promise, and multiple attempts she made to reach them were futile.

According to Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), she lost N300,000 after investing in three units of the scheme, while Adetoun Adekanmbi, a Lagos State-based medical doctor, lost close to N600,000 after investing in the company.

“I started investing in Agropartnerships in 2020 and I invested over N800,000 in various cycles.

“Some of the cycles lasted nine months and some 12 months. I was promised an ROI of 36 per cent.

“Initially, I got my ROI and capital as and when due. But by 2021, investors started complaining about the inability to withdraw pay-out funds from their wallets.

“When the admin of the company was contacted, they apologised and blamed it on technical errors.

“However, in February 2022, it was apparent that there was more to the issues than the earlier stated reason.

“Thereafter, we were told in a Zoom meeting that some pay-outs would be delayed because of the loss the company incurred during the Covid-19 pandemic. They said they were structuring their investments so that pay-outs could recommence in July 2022.

“However, since that meeting, no more updates have been given to investors, and people can no longer log in to see their records of investments and expected returns.

“Also, their numbers and emails have been unreachable.

“I know I still have an estimated N400,000 investment in the company and likely an expected ROI of about N200,000, but I can’t log in to validate this.”

    ‘I lost more than N1m’

Another investor, Oyinkan, a banker, said he lost more than a million naira.

Said she: “When I started the investment in April 2021, I would always receive a payment of N50,000 at the end of every three months. That was like 10 per cent quarterly payment on my capital.

“By the beginning of 2022, when I was supposed to receive my third quarterly ROI, nothing came in for me. Since then, the firm has not paid me a dime.

“It is not even certain  that I would get my capital back.”

He said he was encouraged by the timeliness of the initial profit payment to invest in another product that was on offer by the firm.

“I put N700,000 capital on Agropartnerships’ Poultry 02 Investment, and another N400,000 capital on thefirm’s Rice Value Chain.

“The only ROI I got was N72,000 on both investments. I am concerned that we have seen different patterns like this before, where the CEOs run off with investors’ billions.

“This is Nigeria; I have seen huge investments disappear.”

Lawal Seyi, another investor, related how he lost out after investing N96,000 in the firm’s Poultry 02 plan in 2001, and N250,000 in its Cashew Value Chain in January 2021.

    60,000 investors’ money gone

A visit to Agropartnerships’ Instagram page showed the enormity of investment monies stolen. It is filled with comments from angry investors swindled of their monies, and they are in hundreds.

Their Facebook account shows hundreds of investors bemoaning their losses. On their Twitter and Instagram pages, there are hundreds more who are yet to come to terms with the fact that their monies were gone.

Osayimwense, during the Zoom meeting with investors, claimed that the firm had over 60,000 subscribers with 20,000 paid off.

If his words were to be taken seriously, 40,000 investors must have lost various degrees of capital and interest, translating to billions of naira.

    Mode of operation

From the investors’ explanation, there is a clear pattern in Farmforte’s operation. It was able to hoodwink investors with a promise of unbelievable Returns on Investment (ROI).

Ayoola corroborated the notion, saying: “At times they would say 15 per cent or 26 per cent and up to 40 per cent depending on the duration of the investment.

“One year’s investment could attract 46 per cent. It is normally graduated and it goes on like that.”

Another pattern is to spur unsuspecting investors with prompt payments to make them commit enormous capital.

“Initially, I was getting my returns exactly on due dates. They would be the ones to even call me to check my wallet, that money had been deposited there.

“They were so professional about it and that is why I put my life savings into it. I did not know they were merely setting me up,” informed Ayoola.

He said living had become a tough experience for him.

He said: “I’ve lost everything. I can’t buy fuel in my car. My children are out of school.

“Each time I think about it, I cry. My life savings are gone.

“What kind of country are we in? You cannot invest, you cannot trust anybody.”

Ayoola, who said he had three children in the university,  added: “I can’t fend for them or provide for their needs in school. My wife, who works in a ministry, is the one helping out now. That is what is keeping me going.

“I should be enjoying years of labour in retirement, but I still hustle to make ends meet. I am in pain.”

Ayoola believes that investors’money trapped in Farmforte would be in excess of N2 billion.

“I have over N20m with the company. I’ve met other people that have invested more than that. Imagine the thousands of people who have invested millions.

“This company cannot be allowed to go scot-free or allow other Nigerians to suffer this problem.”

Ayoola said if he had not printed out his investment details on his account in December 2021, the only proof that he and most other investors would have of their dealings with the firm would be the email addresses they were assigned at the point of registration.

“Now, you cannot log into your account, thereby erasing all the dealings you had with them. They planned all these from the beginning.”

    The sec angle

A new dimension was introduced into the matter on March 11, 2022 when the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) sealed off Farmforte’s office.

According to a statement issued SEC, Farmforte “is one of the companies sealed for engaging in fund management-related investment activities without proper registration.”

    Investigation

Claims on Agropartnerships’ website that all their portfolios were insured by Leadway Assurance Plc also proved to be another lie. While Farmforte, the parent company of Agropartnerships, is under Leadways’ Agri-Techpartnership, Agropartnerships is not.

Even for Farmforte, very few of the products they dealt in were insured.

Efforts made to reach Agropartnerships through text and calls were futile.

Attempts to get an insight into the operations of Farmforte led the reporter to thecompany’s former Human Resource Manager, Seyi Soremekun, who confirmed that Osayi and Osayimwense defrauded the company. Soremekun said: “I left the company in 2021 when the owners began to cut corners. They became evasive and stopped paying the salaries of staff in June 2021.

“I had to leave them because I did not see a good ending in the way they were running the company. I received calls from investors every day.

“If I had not left long before the problems started, I would have been culpable too.”

Soremekun reasoned that the CEOs ran the company aground.

An email to Andre Schaap, former CEO of Farmforte Europe, their parent company, also turned up valuable information on the conmen and how they ran the company.

According to André Schaap, who played an advisory role when Farmforte started operation in Nigeria, the company was not set up for digital investment. The owners had other plans for going in that direction.

He said: “That my name came up during your investigation is not strange, as I was the CEO of Farmforte Europe BV. I was in Nigeria many times at the Farmforte head office and advised them in the development of the farming operations. This is regarding the packaging and processing of products that were grown at the farm in Benin City.

“I know that all the phone numbers are not working anymore from Farmforte Agro Allied and From Farmforte Europe BV.

“I left the company in March 2021 as I was not paid for several months, and I did not want to continue anymore.

“There was such an issue with the trust of the brothers (Osayi and Osayimwense), as I was not ever even notified that anything was not going the right way.

“Farmforte Europe BV is still at the address in Meppel but fully abandoned and there is no staff working there anymore. The company is on the edge of bankruptcy.

“Farmforte Europe BV was set up for different reasons, and not as a scam!

“The first was to develop an access market into the EU for sweet potatoes that were grown on a farm near BeninCity.

“The second was to develop products that were made from sweet potatoes like sweet potato beer and sweet potato crisps, sweet potato fries, sweet potato flower, etc.

“The third reason was to organise an off-take of processed cashew nuts in Nigeria.

“The fourth was to build an organisation that was able to sell fruits and vegetables that were grown in Africa and other countries in theworld.

“The fifth and last was to build a market for African food products like fufu and gari, etc, and to export and distribute these from Nigeria and other African countries through the Netherlands into the supermarkets in the EU.

“The announcement on the 15th of December 2021 to the investors came for me as thunder and lightning, totally unexpected as a huge surprise.

“Suddenly, they announced they could not pay investors funds with interest that they should pay that date.

“Six days before that, they were in Holland and did not ever mention there were any problems!

“Looking back, I think thencompany was set up with the best of intentions. However, it was mismanaged by the owners and things could have gone totally differently with different decisions.”

To put a nail in the coffin, Schaap said the CEOs are somewhere abroad living large with investors’ monies and unpaid salaries of workers, suppliers and builders.

“I am quite sure the owners are not the losers in the whole story, and they are still having a very good life living outside Nigeria.

“The people that suffered were the staffs that were not paid for months of the labour they did put in, the investors that lost their money, as well as some suppliers that lost money. For example, the building company that did the construction.

“I hope this gives you some insight into what has happened.”

It is apparent that Osayi and Osayimwense have bolted with billions of naira put in their trust, and investors are not the only ones gnashing their teeth. Scores of employees, suppliers and builders are also writhing in pain for ripping them out of their daily living.

Ayoola warned: “I have petitioned the Economic and Finances Crimes Commission (EFCC) with evidence several times, but I did not get any reply. I don’t think the government is doing anything about this matter.

“These people are fraudsters, and if they are not brought to book, they will return again with another name and company.

“We are calling on the EFCC to investigate this case and bring Osayi and Osayimwense to book.”

Democracy Day: Tinubu addresses Nigerians Monday

President Bola Tinubu will address the nation on Monday, June 12, in commemoration of Democracy Day, the Federal Government announced on Friday.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, who disclosed this on Friday while addressing a world press conference in Abuja, also unveiled a two-item programme for this year’s Democracy Day.

According to Akume, this year’s celebration would be kept low-key, owing to the fact that the nation just came out of an elaborate Presidential Inauguration Programme.

“It is important to note that the Democracy Day has been reviewed to be celebrated annually from May, 29 to June 12 to honour the heroes who championed the struggle and made extra-ordinary sacrifice for the enthronement of the democratic rule in Nigeria from 1999 till date.

“However, May 29 remains the date or anniversary of handing over or taking over of power, and this happens every four (4) years according to the Nigerian Constitution.

“To commemorate this year’s anniversary, it is expedient for citizens and foreigners alike to take stock of how the nation has fared so far and assess the dividends that Democracy has ensued as well as areas where we need to make improvements. It is in light of this that the theme of this year’s Democracy celebration is ‘Hope Reassured’.

“It is pertinent to state that having had an elaborate Presidential inauguration this year, activities to mark the 2023 June 12, Democracy Day will be low key with the following two major activities:

    “Presidential Broadcast,Monday, 12th June, 2023,7:00am.

“The events will be broadcast live on all major stations and streamed on various social media platforms,” Akume stated.
