President to governors: it’s time for governance

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday asked state governors to work with him to unite the country and reshape the economy.

He told them that politics is gone, it is time for real business.

He laid the cards on the table and got the endorsement of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) to remove the petrol subsidy.

But the governors also pushed for palliatives to cushion the effects of subsidy removal.

The President spoke during his maiden meeting with governors, the main bloc in the National Economic Council (NEC) which is chaired by the vice president.

After yesterday’s meeting, there was no statement from the Presidency. The governors also did not speak with reporters.

However, a top source at the meeting the “larger interest of Nigeria dominated discussions.”

The source said: “The President unfolded his pan-Nigeria agenda. He declared that politics is over, it is time to dream, think and work for Nigeria.

“He said he will work with the governors irrespective of party affiliations and partisanship. He pleaded for our understanding and cooperation. All he sought for was a united and a prosperous Nigeria.

“He disarmed most of the governors with his usual anecdotes and deep thoughts on the state of the country. He succeeded in carrying everyone along. He earned the trust of the governors with his rapprochement.”

On the removal of fuel subsidy, another highly-placed source added:” The governors endorsed the decision of the President.

“We all knew the fuel subsidy removal was a fait accompli

“ But we demanded for palliatives to alleviate the burdens associated with the subsidy removal.

“The President assured the governors that he will work with the NEC to address challenges facing Nigerians.”

Late service of witnesses’ statements stalls hearing in Atiku, PDP petition

For the second day running, hearing was yesterday stalled midway in the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the February 25 presidential poll, Atiku Abubakar.

The respondents to the PDP/Atiku petition – the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was the ruling party’s standard bearer in the election, objected to the petitioners’ move to call witnesses whose statements were served late.

Proceedings in the petition resumed smoothly on yesterday before the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) before it was brought to an abrupt end over an hour later, owing to the respondents’ objection.

Earlier in the day’s proceedings, petitioners’ lawyer, Chris Uche, (SAN), tendered bundles of copies of Forms EC8B from 10 Local Government Areas in Kogi States, which were admitted by the court after the respondents registered their objection and promised to provide reasons later.

Uche told the court that his clients were still expecting the INEC to release more documents to them.

He said their constraint was that they got information the previous day that some of the documents were ready and outside Abuja, and wondered why they were required to go outside Abuja to access the documents after paying N6.69million to the electoral agency.

Uche then proceeded to call a witness, Ndubuisi Nwobu, who described himself as the Chairman of the PDP in Anambra State.

Nwobi, who said he acted as the PDP state Collation Agent in Anambra during the election, claimed that the process was manipulated at the Ward Collation Centres.

The witness, who was the petitioners’ 11th so far, said although Peter Obi ‘s Labour Party (LP) won the state, he believed the process was not free and fair all over the state.

When asked if he was present at all the 4720 polling units in the state during the election to have witnessed when the process was allegedly manipulated, Nwobi said he only visited about 30 polling units.

He said he got information about the alleged manipulation from his party’s agents at all the polling units where he could not visit.

Nwobi, who said the election held peacefully and in accordance with the law at the polling unit level, said his main grouse was that the when process was that INEC officials did not “upload election results to the INEC Results Viewing Portal (IReV) on time as promised by its Chairman before the election.

He claimed that the manipulation of the process took place dying collation, stating that he even had to intervene in some occasions to rescue INEC’s collation officers from being attacked by party agents and irate voters.

Lawyers to the respondents – Abubakar Mahmoud (SAN) for INEC, Akin Olujinmi (SAN) for President Tinubu, and Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) for the APC – however kicked when Uche moved to call some subpoenaed witnesses.

They complained that the witnesses’ written statements, filed by the petitioners, were served on them few minutes before the commencement of the court’s proceedings.

The respondents’ lawyers sought time to familiarise themselves with the statements and seek clarifications from their clients, a position that moved the court to postpone further hearing till the next day.

Similar incident occurred on Tuesday when proceedings were brought to an abrupt end owing to some defects identified in the schedule of documents filed by the petitioners.

Also yesterday, Obi and the LP continued the prosecution of their petition by tendering more result sheets, including Certified True Copies (CTCs) of Forms EC8B (ward collated results), EC8C (Local Government collated results), EC8D (state collated results) and EC8DA (national collated results).

Obi and the LP tendered their documents through a member of their legal team, Paul Ananaba (SAN), who did the tendering from the bar.

Ananaba tendered Forms EC8B for 12 Local Government Areas in Ebonyi State, four Local Government Areas in Kaduna State, four Local Government Areas in Oyo State and one council in Nasarawa State.

The lawyer explained that they were the remnants of what were tendered the previous day.

Ananaba proceeded to tender copies of Forms EC8C from 13 states, including eight Local Government Areas in Bayelsa, 23 Local Government Areas in Benue, 18 Local Government Areas in Cross River, 10 Local Government Areas in Ebonyi, 18 Local Government Areas in Edo, 20 Local Government Areas in Lagos, 25 Local Government Areas in Niger, 18 Local Government Areas in Ondo, 33 Local Government Areas in Oyo, 23 Local Government Areas in Rivers, 23 Local Government Areas in Sokoto, 16 Local Government Areas  in Ekiti and 25 Local Government Areas in Delta.

He equally tendered 51 pages of Forms EC8D for the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and a copy of Form EC8DA.

Despite respondents’ objection to the admissibility of the other documents, their lawyers, however, did not resist the admission of the national result in evidence.

Hearing in the petition resumes today at 2pm.

BREAKING: Aregbesola seeks forgiveness, blames devil for feud with Oyetola

The Immediate past Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola has sought forgiveness from former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola and others who may be offended by his actions in the last four years.

Aregbesola, who was Osun Governor between 2010 to 2018, handed over to Oyetola who served under him as Chief of Staff after winning the 2018 governorship election.

He was opposed to Oyetola’s re-election and faulted the elders of the party for not chastising him(Oyetola) for reversing his policies.

Aregbesola, who arrived Osun State after his tenure as the Minister under former President Muhammadu Buhari, visited the palaces of Owa Obokun, Oba Gabriel Aromolaran and Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun before addressing his supporters at Nelson Mandela Freedom Park via Old Garage, Osogbo capital of Osun State.

The ex-Minister, who spoke in Yoruba language, lauded Buhari for giving him the opportunity to serve. He also commended President Bola Tinubu for being his destiny helper and trusting him with power.

According to him: “I have not returned to Osun for animosity or acrimony but reconciliation of our party. I have come here today to beg for forgiveness from anybody who is offended towards me. The reason why people are applauding me over my successes in Osun today was because of the great work I did when I was in government and those who turned themselves into enemies today, we worked together in government.

“I thank God who showcased me from Lagos through the help of President Bola Tinubu, he is the architect of my success. I spent 8 years as commissioner in Lagos. In 2004, we had a meeting in Badagry where we talked about how we will take over our states from the opposition party. President Tinubu and other Yoruba elders directed me to come and take over Osun State from the opposition.

“With the help of God and the support of Asiwaju, I was able to excel as a Governor for 8 years even though it was not easy with the help of those that turned to my enemy for four years.”

“In 2019, after the Supreme Court judgment, I came to this venue with the person I handed over power to. I counseled that I have played my own part and handed over to the person I loved. But I said, the person must do it right by ensuring unity within the party. If that is done I will now be the godfather. But unfortunately, Satan took over them in interpreting what I said. I never begged for anything from them when he was in power.

“I am saying it today and I am begging for forgiveness. After this, we are not going to beg anybody again. We didn’t offend anyone and we don’t believe anyone offended us but it’s possible that they believe we offended them, that’s why we are apologising to them.“

No agreement yet with Fed Govt over subsidy removal – Labour

Organised Labour said it has not reached an agreement with the Federal Government on its demands following the removal of subsidy on petroleum products.

The Labour Centre said all its demands have been harmonised and presented to the government for deliberation.

President of the Trade Union Congress(TUC) Festus Osifo said this when he appeared on Sunrise Daily on Channels Television.

He was joined on the show by the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Joe Ajaero on Tuesday.

Osifo said the items would be addressed at the June 19 meeting between the labour and government team.

The TUC President said: “We have not reached any agreement with the government. We have presented our demands to them and we expect that by our next meeting, we will harmonise, the government will tell us what they can do and we will also bring our own data to the table during the meeting.

“When we meet we are going to define each of those items and a timeline will be put on them. After the meeting on June 19, the timelines of each items are going to be revealed.

Some of the demands of labour included reversal to the old pump price of N195 per litre; the increase of minimum wage from N30,000 to N200,000; tax holiday for employees in the private and public sector that earn less than N200 000; introduction of premium motor spirit allowance for those earning less than N200, 000; provision of mass transit for all categories of the populace and provision of subsidy for food items among others.

The NLC served a strike notice, the day after President Bola Tinubu, in his inauguration address, declared that “fuel subsidy is gone.”

The presidential announcement led to a knee-jerk reaction from petrol marketers, who immediately shut down filling stations and hiked product prices.

But after a meeting with the government, the NLC and TUC shelved its planned strike.

    • President urge Wase, Betara, Gagdi, others to accept party’s choice
    • Meeting slated with APC governors, NWC, Senators/ Reps-elect today

With strike threat by Labour as an aftermath of petrol subsidy removal over, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has turned his attention to a smooth take-off of the 10th National Assembly.

He is expected to issue a proclamation giving effect to the commencement of a new legislative cycle next week.

President Tinubu will hold talks with All Progressives Congress (APC) governors and members of the National Working Committee (NWC) today on preparations for the election of presiding officers, which is the first activity after the inauguration.

Tomorrow, the President will meet with APC National Assembly members-elect.

Yesterday, the President took a concrete step to unite the APC National Assembly members-elect for the purpose of arriving at a joint decision on the zoning of the principal offices.

He met with contestants for the post of Speaker who are challenging the party’s choice, Tajudeen Abbas.

Also yesterday, governors of Osun, Oyo and Rivers joined their other 23 colleagues to drum support for the APC’s preferred candidates for Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin.

Former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, who said the Southsouth should produce the next Senate President, pointed out that anti-zoning campaigners in APC are laying a stumbling block for Tinubu.

Among the House of Representatives Speaker contenders at the meeting with President Tinubu, which started around 7 pm at the State House are Yusuf Gagdi (Pankshin/Kanke/Constituency); Sada Soli (Jibia /Kaita Constituency); Miriam Onuoha (Okigwe North Constituency); and Muktar Betara (Biu/Bayo/Shani/Kwayar Kusar Constituency).

The President earlier met separately with Deputy Speaker Idris Wase.

The meeting was attended by the APC’s National Secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore.

A Senator, who is attending the meeting with the President today, said the parley became necessary to put the house in order before the inauguration.

He said: “The President will be meeting with the APC senators-elect and House of Representatives members-elect tomorrow (today) to make a final appeal. APC governors and members of the National Working Committee (NWC) are expected at the meeting.”

The APC governors, who have repeatedly said they would support the party’s nominees for presiding officer positions are expected to join the president in persuading those challenging party’s position.

The intention is to arrive at a consensus to prevent election on the floor on inauguration day, it was learnt last night.

Tinubu pleads with Betara, Wase, Gagdi to step down for Abbas

President Tinubu pleaded with the aspirants for the Speaker to step down for Abbas.

He said his plea was in the interest of national cohesion and unity.

But the aggrieved aspirants, especially a leading aspirant, Aliyu Betara, promised to consult their supporters and get back to the President through Senator Iyiola Omisore, who led them to the meeting.

It was learnt that some of the aspirants may withdraw for Abbas in deference to the President.

Although none of the aspirants spoke with reporters, it was gathered that the President was willing to involve them.

A source said: “The President made a deft move to prevail on those aspiring to be the Speaker to step down for Abbas. He urged them to allow a seamless takeoff of the 10th House of Representatives.

“The session was a follow-up to the interaction he had with Betara on Monday.

“Tinubu brokered a no-winner, no vanquished situation. These aspirants will be accommodated in the power-sharing in the House.

“He has also granted the request of the candidates to consult with their supporters.”

A source said the ruling party is not comfortable with how a contestant for Senate President “has monetised and bastardised the process.”

The source said: “The aspirant has involved traditional rulers in the campaigns. His billboards are all over the place. He is engaged in all manner of propaganda. He is carrying on as if he is contesting a general election.”

The source said the supporters of the aspirant have hired a former Senate President as a consultant in a bid to repeat the 2015 scenario.

Predicting that the plot will fail, the source added: “The aspirant is not a ranking member, and the essence of ranking is that those who have legislative experience in the Senate should be presiding officers.”

    25 governors support Akpabio/Jibrin ticket

No fewer than 25 governors have adopted Akpabio and Jibrin, it was learnt yesterday.

The 25 governors are mobilising senators-elect across APC, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP).

They include governors of Kwara, Nasarawa, Benue, Ogun, Oyo, Lagos, Ekiti, Osun, Kogi, Rivers, Cross River, Kaduna, Borno, Ebonyi and Ondo states.

The governors, the majority of whom are from APC-controlled states, have maintained that they will uphold the unanimous zoning decision of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.

The governors, it was learnt, added that the NWC has made profound decisions that will promote institutional stability and the peaceful conduct of legislative proceedings in the 10th Assembly.

    Wike chides anti-zoning lawmakers

Wike accused opponents of zoning of the Senate Presidency to the Southsouth of laying a stumbling block for Tinubu in the National Assembly.

He insisted that those who love the unity of the country and want the Tinubu-led government to succeed would work to ensure the emergence of the next Senate President from the Southsouth as already determined by the President and the APC leadership.

A statement by Wike’s media aide, Kelvin Ebiri, said the former governor spoke in Port Harcourt.

He said: “My position is that the (Senate) presidency should come to the Southsouth.

“If you agree that (Senate) presidency should go to the south, tell me the truth, where should it go? It can’t be in the Southwest. It can’t be in the Southeast.

“Southsouth has only produced one Senate president, far back in 1979, Joseph Wayas. Southeast has produced over seven.”

Wike said those who earlier fought against Tinubu’s presidential ambition were still hellbent on laying a stumbling block for him at the National Assembly through their opposition to Akpabio, his preferred choice for Senate President.

He said: “The party (APC) and the President appear to have a soft spot for Akpabio. I would have thought that people will say, look, allow this administration to start on a very good foundation, so nobody gives us excuses that why this administration could not start on good footing is because of the rancour between the executive and the legislature.”

The former governor maintained that if there is no cordial relationship between the leadership of the National Assembly and the presidency, the country will be distracted by the unnecessary power conflict between the executive and National Assembly.

He added: “If Mr President doesn’t have a smooth administration, at the end of the day, who suffers? Is it not Nigerians? Let us believe that we are all one, let us give everyone a sense of belonging.”

Wike disclosed that President Tinubu and the APC national leadership preference for Akpabio, who is a Christian, is part of a deliberate strategy aimed at dispersing the misconception generated by the choice of Kashim Shettima, a Muslim, as the president’s running mate.

The former Rivers governor stressed that by backing Akpabio and appointing a former Benue State governor, George Akume, as Secretary to the Federation, President Tinubu had demonstrated his sincerity to balance the faith question.

He said: “Muslim-Muslim ticket was a problem, coupled with the abysmal performance of the last government, it was a double jeopardy. PDP campaigned against it that this country can’t have a President as a Muslim and Vice President as a Muslim.

“Somehow, by the president’s own luck, God being by his side, and his doggedness, he was able to make it.

“Mind you, a lot of booty traps were set for Mr. President not to emerge as President. A lot of booty traps were set even by people in his own party. It is correct. There is no government in this world which is a ruling party that can bring up policies that will make your party be unpopular during an election period.

“Within that period of election, you brought the issue of Naira redesign and brought the issue of there was no fuel – two things that affected the masses. You will know it was a booty trap set against Asiwaju not to emerge. Nobody can deceive me that that policy was not targeted at him.”

Wike dismissed the insinuation that his recent visit to the Presidential Villa was in connection to speculation that he was being offered a ministerial position.

He said Tinubu had never during any of their meetings made such an offer to him as was being speculated in the media.

“Every week, you see people reeling out different lists. What is my business? Mr President has not called me one day to say look this is what I want you to do, for me to say yes or no. But, you see people churning out lists. I’m sure this week another list will come out,” he said

Wike commended President Tinubu for his courage to end the fuel subsidy regime in the country.

He argued that the decision clearly distinguished the President as a man determined and prepared for leadership.

He said: “What President did was to tell Nigerians, I am prepared for this job, and that is why some of us we say give him a chance.”

Group: Zone Senate President to Southeast

The Forum of APC Support Groups rejected the zoning arrangement announced by the leadership of the party.

The group, which stormed the national secretariat of the party in Abuja, demanded that the party leadership should correct the “lop-sidedness and imbalance decision” of the zoning arrangement.

Its National Publicity Secretary Adamu Isa’ah, urged the APC National Executive Committee (NEC) to come up with an arrangement that would be fair, equitable and just.
