I’m returning to Kaduna after handover – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said he will be heading to Kadina State after handing over on Monday contrary to the impression he would go straight to his home town in Daura, Katsina State.

He stated on Friday at the launch of the book “A promise kept, a compendium of significant achievements of Muhammadu Buhari administration 2015-2023”, held at the Council Chambers of the State House, Abuja.

The President also lashed out at opposition parties in the 2023 General Elections for creating the impression of incompetent party leadership, and a chaotic elections to the international community.

Buhari, who said though he is looking desperately forward to Monday when he will finally exit the seat of power, also disclosed that he would use the weekend to sign some of the papers so that from Eagles Square he will take off.

The President commended the MBO Dynamic Support Group led by Usman Ibrahim, for managing to catch him completely off guard.

“I thank you very much for this major surprise, I think now when I go back I will have time to read some books, not just about myself, but about other issues. I assure you, I have been counting the days, I am looking forward to Monday very desperately. I will use the weekend to sign some of the papers so that from Eagles Square, I will fly to Kaduna and eventually go to Daura.

“I think by my profession, I spent most of my time that is the military for 20 years, there wasn’t this surprise. If you allow yourself to be taken by surprise you will be virtually be overwhelmed. I wasn’t expecting this honestly. Especially today when I need to sign few papers because I know on Monday, from the swearing in venue I will fly directly to Kaduna and then I will go to the other side of Nigeria”, he said.

The President stated that the APC had achieved its set objective as a political party, noting that the last elections were transparent as people voted their choice candidates.

He said citizens were not influenced by money, judging by the outcome of the exercise where serving governors and lawmakers lost their bids for re-election.

The President said what his administration and the party wanted to achieve was to develop a firm political culture.

“Thank you for surprising me with your generosity and kindness. I think the achievement we wanted is to make we developed a firm political culture. I think I was expecting too much. When I was in Doha, meeting some heads of states, I was getting calls from Europe, America and Nigeria, congratulating us on the success of elections.

“The opposition has created the impression outside the country that we are going into a mess because we have incompetent leadership of the party. They were overwhelmed that the election came and went and both at the center and at the states, fantastic”, he said.

He further said, “How can ten sitting governors of states lose their constituencies, this has been unprecedented. So I congratulate you the national working committee (of the APC) and others here, that we have really proved that democracy is worth defending.

“Nigerians have understood it now, otherwise how can they vote against their sitting governors stopping them from going to the senate to rest.

“So they were really overwhelmed and I congratulate our politically development. Please congratulate your constituencies, it means that even though you have excess money, they will collect and put in their pockets but they will elect the person they trust from any constituency, either House of Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate until it comes to the president itself.

“Because, it was so transparent, everything was done there in front of everybody. And committee by committee from various constituencies lined up and picked the candidate they want. So really, we have virtually politically arrived. I congratulate our party.

“Today, we prayed together with Asiwaju (Bola Tinubu) and I congratulated him and I said I am eager to go to other side of Nigeria. I wish him the best of luck. I said his Vice President is experienced, a two time governor in his state and then the senate. And this is how we got the chairman of our party, two time governor in his state and also he has been in the senate,” he said.

Subsidy removal, regulating exchange rates will bring initial hardship-Tinubu

The President-elect Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has identified the pending plans to remove petroleum subsidy and end the multiple foreign currency exchange rates as issues that will pose the initial challenge to the in-coming administration.

The President-elect noted this while speaking at the public lecture and Jumat Prayer at the National Mosque in Abuja as part of the 2023 Presidential Inauguration programme of events.

Tinubu, who was represented by the Vice President-elect, Senator Kashim Shettima, however appealed to Nigerians to stand with the government as it would be working to deconstruct the maze of challenges facing the nation, warning that the take off point might be rough.

Tinubu, who noted the myriad of issues weighing on Nigeria had prevented it from taking its pride of place as a global power, said the time had come for all Nigerians to face the challenges, assuring all that he would treat all Nigerians equally, irrespective of political, religious and ethnic differences.

“Tinubu is a fair-minded person. He will do justice to Nigerians, irrespective of affiliation with political parties, religious and tribal background. We are united by our common heritage of poverty and insecurity among others. This is time for all of us to coalesce into a single force.

“Ours is a great nation, waiting to unleash its great potentials to the world. China was once called a sleeping giant, but today, China has woken up. Nigeria needs to wake up. We are calling on all of you to pray for us for God’s guidance. I want to assure you that Tinubu will hit the ground.

“We do not have the luxury of time. The challenges facing us are getting worse. We are living in a pressing time. Be rest assured that in the fullness of time, Nigeria will pay glowing tributes to us. The starting point might not be rosy, let me be very honest with you.

“Oil Subsidy is an albatross on our neck, the multiple exchange rate system is a drain on the national economy. There are certain decisions the President-elect will take but in the fullness of time, Nigerians will not only appreciate, but also celebrate us,” he said.

BREAKING: Court dismisses another suit against Tinubu’s inauguration

A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a suit filed by three individuals seeking to stop the May 29 inauguration, claiming the President-elect, Bola Tinubu supplied false information to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)  about his age and citizenship status.

Justice James Omotosho, in a ruling on Friday, held that the suit by – Praise Ilemona Isaiah, Pastor Paul Isaac Audu and Anongu Moses – was frivolous and abuse of court process.

Justice Omotosho held that the plaintiffs lacked the locus standi to file the suit, adding that the court could not exercise jurisdiction to hear it because it relates to a presidential election.

The ruling by Justice Omotosho is coming about 40 minutes after the Supreme Court dismissed another suit filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) seeking to void the candidacy of Tinubu and the Vice-president elect, Kashim Shettima.

BREAKING: Supreme Court dismisses PDP’s suit against Tinubu/Shettma joint ticket

The Supreme Court has dismissed the suit filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) seeking to void the joint ticket of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Senator Kashim Shettma as presidential and vice presidential candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last election.

The PDP had claimed that Shettma violated the Electoral Act by allowing himself to be nominatited twice for two different offices – Borno Central Senatorial district and Vice President.

In a judgment on Friday, a five-member panel of the apex court, held that the appeal by the PDP was grossly lacking in merit and a waste of the court’s precious time.

Justice Adamu Jauro, in the lead judgment, affirmed the earlier judgments of the Federal High Court and Court of Appeal, which dismissed the case on the grounds that the PDP lacked no locus standi to have sued to challenge the process of nomination of candidates by another party.

Justice Jauro, who described PDP as a busy body and meddlesome interloper, held that Kashim was not guilty of double nomination because there was evidence that he resigned as a senatorial candidate on April 6  before he was nominated as Vice presidential candidate on April 14.

He held that not being a member of the APC and candidate in its primary election, the PDP cannot challenge the process the APC adopted in nominating its candidates.

The judge also held that Section 285(14)(c) of the Constitution, which the PDP relied on in bringing the case did not clothe it with the right to challenge INEC decisions and activities in relation to other political parties.

On the PDP’s request that it hear the case on the merit, the court said since the 180 days within which the trial court could have heard the case and the 60 days for the Court of Appeal have elapsed, it no longer has the jurisdiction to consider the case on the merit.

Soludo seeks Kanu’s release in letter to Buhari

Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo has again appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to release Nnamdi Kanu before exiting office on May 29.

Kanu, who is the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was first arrested in 2015 but was granted bail two years later.

He jumped bailed and fled abroad, but was re-arrested in Kenya and brought back to Nigeria in June 2021.

In his letter to the President, the Anambra governor said the continued detention of the IPOB leader has continued to affect residents of the Southeast who are forced to observe a sit-at-home order on Mondays out of fear.

Soludo expressed surprise that despite a call by the United Nations Human Rights Council for the release of the IPOB leader and court rulings granting freedom to him, the Federal Government has not released him.

According to Soludo, Kanu was reported to be “gravely ill” with life-threatening conditions which he listed to include serious heart condition, hypertension and low potassium levels.

The governor stressed that the medical conditions require specialist medical care and interventions which not available at the Department of State Services (DSS) facility he is being detained.

The letter reads: “In the light of the foregoing, it is my earnest prayer that Mr. President may kindly consider the immediate and unconditional release of Kanu as demanded by the United Nations Human Rights Council and the Federal High Court.

“This will be the right thing to do as a country that should extol the principle of the rule of law in compliance with the international law and conventions that Nigeria is signatory to.”

The governor urged the President to consider granting Kanu an “administrative bail on compassionate grounds and as part of national healing” if there were persisting grounds that would make his unconditional release “untenable.”

“In this circumstance, I am prepared to take him (Kanu) on bail. My government is prepared to provide him with alternative secured accommodation at Awka where he will have access to appropriate medical care, among others, and make him available when required,” he assured.

    • President-elect gets baton of service, transition documents

    • Buhari confers GCFR on Tinubu, GCON on Shettima

    • President: after a good race, I have passed the baton

President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday began his final movement to Aso Villa, the seat of government.

He reflected on the weight of responsibility on his shoulders as he received the baton of service and transition documents from outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari during an impressive ceremony at the State House, Abuja.

Tinubu was conferred with the highest national award of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic.

Vice President-elect Kashim Shettima received the second highest national award of Grand Commander of the Order of Niger (GCON).

The awards are statutory parts of the transition of the two top officials of government into power.

On previous occasions, such honours were conferred on the new President and Vice President after taking the oath of office. Yesterday’s action by President Buhari, coming four days before the inauguration, is a departure from the tradition.

The President-elect, who paid tribute to President Buhari as a democrat, said he understood the magnitude of tasks ahead, assuring that he will not disappoint Nigerians.

An elated Buhari, who reviewed his two-term tenure of eight years, said he had run a good race, adding that it was time to pass the baton.

He said: “I have run my course. I am happy that I am handing over to competent hands.”

Shettima, who also expressed gratitude to the President, said Tinubu and himself do not have the luxury of time, stressing that they must hit the ground running.

After the ceremony, outgoing Vice President Yemi Osinbajo joined the President, Tinubu and Shettima on a familiarisation tour of the Villa.

The investiture of national honours at the State House Conference Centre, Aso Villa, was part of the activities marking the transition.

On Monday, Tinubu will be inaugurated at the Eagle Square, Abuja.

Accompanied by his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, former All Progressives Congress (APC) Interim National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande and former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba, the President-elect said his election to lead the over 200 million Nigerians was the goodwill that came from a place of trust.

He said: “I am a simple man who is the beneficiary of the support and goodwill of the people of Nigeria.

“The people have put their trust in us. You have done your part Mr. President.

“Now, that great duty descends on me. I understand the meaning of the honour given to me today and of the task that awaits.

“I must run this race and must do it well. On security, the economy, agriculture, jobs, education, health and power and in all other sectors we must make headway. The people deserve no less. In this, I shall disappoint neither them nor you, Mr. President.”

Tinubu, who said Nigeria’s path may not always be smooth, expressed faith in the country’s purpose and collective ability to overcome challenges.

He said: “Our way shall not always be smooth. Yet we are imbued with faith in our purpose and a firm belief in our collective ability to overcome the challenges that confront us.”

The President-elect commended President Buhari’s unwavering commitment to the progressive ethos and good governance, noting that as a leader, he took courageous decisions when others shied away.

He specifically thanked him for designating June 12 as Democracy Day and honouring the late Chief Moshood Abiola with the GCFR, a decision other presidents failed to take.

Tinubu said: “President Buhari, you have shown courage in taking tough decisions others avoided.

“One such decision was to recognise the injustice of the annulment of the 1993 election, to designate June 12 as Democracy Day, and to bestow the nation’s highest honour on the late MKO Abiola.

“As much as anyone could, you reached back into history to set the record straight and heal a festering wound.

“The justice you did in this matter lends special meaning to today.”

The President-elect also expressed his gratitude to President Buhari for bestowing the nation’s highest honours on him and Vice President-elect Shettima.

He also thanked him for the transition documents and the diligent work performed by the transition council, led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Boss Mustapha.

While acknowledging the comprehensive scorecard presented in the transition documents, he said: “The documents summarise the immense work of your administration. They constitute an impressive and noteworthy scorecard.”

He emphasised that the ceremony exemplified Nigeria’s vibrant and true democracy, where one leader honours his successor and ensures a smooth transition of power.

“This stately occasion is living evidence that Nigeria is a vibrant and true democracy,” Tinubu said.

The President, who said he had done his part in steering the ship of the country to success, expressed confidence in Tinubu’s capacity.

He said: “I would like now to express my deepest gratitude to the Nigerian people for their unwavering support and trust throughout my tenure as President.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to serve this great nation, and I am confident that Nigeria is in capable hands as we embark on this new chapter.”

The President congratulated the President-elect and Vice pPresident-elect, who had served as governor of Lagos and Borno states, respectively.

He said: “I extend my warmest congratulations to the President-elect, on his well-deserved victory at the February 25th, 2023 Presidential elections.

“The Nigerian people have recognised your leadership qualities, political acumen, and passion to serve our great nation, and have entrusted you with the burden of governing our beloved country.

“I have no doubt that Nigeria will continue to thrive and achieve new heights under your leadership. You were the best candidate at the elections and Nigerians have chosen wisely.

“I equally extend my congratulations to the Vice President-elect. Your wealth of experience in governance, your unwavering commitment to the well-being of the Nigerian people, and your exemplary leadership during challenging times as Governor of Borno State, have made you a deserving candidate for this position. I have full confidence that you will serve our nation with utmost dedication and integrity.”

On the awards, President Buhari said: “In accordance with the Honours Award Act, 1963, Laws of Federation of Nigeria, (LFN), 2004, Presidents/Heads of State receive the Honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (GCFR) while the Vice Presidents are awarded the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON).

“Today, with the authority vested in me, as the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I have conferred the National Honour of GCFR on His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu and that of the GCON on His Excellency Kashim Shettima respectively.”

Urging Tinubu to brace for the tasks ahead, Buhari said: “As we celebrate this auspicious occasion, let us not forget the immense responsibilities that come with leadership.

“The challenges facing our nation are significant, and it is the duty of the President and Vice President to address them with courage, wisdom, and compassion.

“We must remain committed to the principles of good governance, transparency, and accountability, as these are the foundations upon which our nation’s progress and development rely.”

President Buhari noted that Tinubu had the experience and capacity to lead the country and build on the legacy of his administration.

“President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, you have a long and illustrious track record of public service, marked by your exceptional achievements in various capacities.

“Your transformative leadership in Lagos State, where you left an indelible mark in the areas of infrastructure, education, healthcare, and economic development, speaks volumes about your dedication to the welfare of the Nigerian people.”

President Buhari expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their unwavering support and trust throughout his tenure.

He added: “It has been an honour and a privilege to serve this great nation, and I am confident that Nigeria is in capable hands as we embark on this new chapter.’’

While examining some of the challenges before the incoming administration, President Buhari advised Asiwaju Tinubu to lead the country with wisdom, courage, and compassion.

    Transition council institutionalised

To avoid a repeat of the 2015 experience, the President said Executive Order No. 14 of 2023 had been signed, establishing the legal framework for conducting presidential transitions at the federal level.

He said the Executive Order establishes the Presidential Transition Council chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Ministerial Transition Teams headed by the Permanent Secretaries.

President Buhari explained that the primary responsibility of the two ad-hoc bodies was to ensure that every piece of information that will help a new administration get off to a speedy start was made available in a usable format and in a timely manner.

“Today, I am so proud to have handed over to you my successor, Your Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, three key documents that will guide you as you aim to define a path for your administration.

“It is my earnest desire that you will find these documents useful as this would be the first time in the history of this country that such detailed documentation will be produced for handover to a new administration.

“I strongly encourage you to uphold this legacy and make the experience even better for your successor by the time you are to leave office.

“It may also interest you to know that apart from these three documents, all the ministries and their agencies have also prepared their handover notes, ready to brief their new political leadership.

“I want to sincerely thank the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and his team for this great feat,’’ he further stated.

On the transfer of a symbolic baton to Asiwaju Tinubu, President Buhari said the incoming government would continue with the race of advancing democracy and development.

He added: “This is a first in the history of our nation’s transition process. To preserve this remarkable history for generations to come, I have directed that the baton be preserved in the Presidential history wing of the National Archives and I hope that President-elect Tinubu and those after him will build on this tradition.”

Before the investiture ceremony, the SGF spoke on the transition documents, which, he said included three documents – notes on each of the nine priority areas of the outgoing administration’s focus, a compendium of the Federal Government’s priority programmes and projects and the status of policies implemented.

The Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Senator George Akume, noted that the February 25 presidential poll had been adjudged the most credible in the history of Nigeria, adding that the credit for the process must go to President Buhari.

Guests at the ceremony included Senate President Ahmad Lawan, House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Shettima: we must hit the ground running

Shettima assured Nigerians that the incoming administration will hit the ground running.

The Vice President-elect, who spoke with reporters, said: “I believe President Tinubu will hit the ground running from day one. He does not have the luxury of time.

“I will be the Vice President I don’t want to be presumptuous; I don’t want to make a loud proclamation but my interaction with him has shown that we will hit the ground running from day one.”

Speaking on his visit to the Vice President, he said: “At the instance of the Vice President, who is a friend, a contemporary, I came here just to exchange ideas on how to move the nation forward.

“He took me round the offices out of courtesy and I want to commend him. I want to thank him for extending that courtesy to me. Yes, cross-fertilisation of ideas.”

On his investiture with the GCON, he said: “It was a historical experience, a humbling experience. We are what we are not because of our intellect, not because of our physical prowess, not because of our pedigree or political sagacity. It’s just a gift from God to humanity, four years or eight years in this time.

“I believe it is a humbling experience, a call to national duty and by God’s grace we need the support of all of you, especially the media to succeed. So, I wish to implore all of you to join us in building a new Nigeria.”

Lawyer fined N40m for case against Tinubu’s inauguration

A Lawyer and politician Ambrose Owuru, has been fined N40 million by the  Court of Appeal in Abuja for filing a case seeking to prevent the inauguration of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as president.

In a judgment yesterday, a three-member panel of the court held that the case by Owuru and  Hope Democratic Party (HDP) amounted to an abuse of court process.

It added that the matter was an invitation to the court to review its earlier decision, which it cannot do.

Justice Jamil Tukur, who read the lead judgment,   said the issues in the case had earlier been determined by the court while sitting as an election petition court in the 2019 election.

Tukur added that the court also found that the Supreme Court had heard the matter and pronounced on it on October 28, 2019.

He argued that since the case had been litigated up to the Supreme Court, it was an abuse of the judicial process for Owuru and the HDP to seek its re-litigation.

Tukur upheld the January 30 judgment by Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja which earlier dismissed the case for being an abuse of court process.

He proceeded to dismiss the appeal and ordered Owuru to pay each of the four respondents 10 million in cost.

The respondents are President Muhammadu Buhari; the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and   Tinubu.

The appeal by Owuru and HDP was against Ekwo’s judgment on the suit in which Owuru sought to be sworn in as Buhari’s successor.

Owuru claimed, among others, that he won a referendum purportedly conducted within the period of the postponement of the 2019 presidential election.

He argued that by the victory, he recorded in the 2019 referendum, no other person should occupy the office of the President until he serves out his tenure.

Owuru and the HDP had raised similar issues in the petition they filed against the 2019 presidential election, which petition was dismissed by the Supreme Court for want of jurisdiction.

  • DSS warns against plans to disrupt inaugural ceremonies

DSS warns against plans to disrupt inaugural ceremonies

The Department of State Services (DSS) says it is aware of plans by “subversive elements”   to disrupt the inaugurations of President-elect Bola Tinubu in Abuja and governors in many state capitals on Monday.

It stated that the primary goal of the planners was to create panic and fear among members of the public.

The Service, therefore, warned persons not involved in the inauguration ceremonies to stay away from “restricted and certain designated areas at all the venues.

The DSS  also cautioned the media and Civil Society Organisations(CSOs) to  “shun fake news, false alarms, skewed reportage/narratives and sensationalism”  in the interest of national unity and cohesion

The alert, warning and admonition were contained in a statement yesterday by the DSS  Spokesman, Dr Peter Afunanya.

The statement reads: “It would be recalled that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chairman of the Presidential Transition Council (PTC) on 18th May 2023 held a  Conference during which he announced activities for the presidential inauguration.

“The major highlight of the activities is the swearing-in of the President on 29th May 2023 in Abuja. On the same date, new governors will also be inaugurated in most of the states.

“The Service is, however, aware of plans by subversive elements to disrupt the programmes in parts of the country. The aim is to undermine security agencies’ efforts at ensuring peaceful ceremonies as well as creating panic and fear among members of the public.

“Based on these, citizens, the media and CSOs are advised to adhere strictly to security and civil protocols during the events. They are also urged to shun fake news, false alarms, skewed reportage/narratives and sensationalism that may likely inflame division, tension and violence prior to and after the exercises. This is more so that such undesirable acts will serve no purpose other than destroying national unity and cohesion.

“Additionally, all unauthorised (and unaccredited) persons are warned to stay away from restricted and certain designated areas at the event venues.

“The service reiterates its earlier call for the populace to remain calm and law-abiding. Meanwhile, it will continue to sustain collaboration with sister agencies to ensure successful inaugurations.”
