Ruling the world, my ultimate vision for sports – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan said on Monday that his administration was committed to Nigeria becoming the best sporting nation in Africa, top four in the Commonwealth and ultimately rule the world.

Jonathan spoke at the opening of a Presidential Sports Sector Retreat held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said the vision was realistic and achievable with hard work, greater sense of purpose and dedication.

The president noted the importance of sports as a source of joy to people, a unifying and mobilising factor and a source of revenue generation.

He charged participants at the retreat to brainstorm and strategise on how to reclaim the country’s past sporting glory.

“There is no gain saying that apart from its obvious benefits in bringing joy to our citizens, especially when our teams do well, no other sector of our national life has a greater force for mobilising and uniting our people around a common purpose, than sports.

“I remember vividly as a vice-president when we were to host one team that did well and the Chief of Staff then, Gen. Abdullahi, was emphasising that we must receive these people very well because it only sports and especially when we are winning that Muslims and Christians don’t know the difference between themselves.

“They sing the same songs, dance the same steps and we must encourage sporting activities in this country,’’ the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the president as saying at the forum.

He said the country could not overlook the relevance of sports to national development and well being.

He described sports as a viable socio-economic tool for youth development, nation building and for instilling core value of social justice

Jonathan recalled the superlative performance of Nigerian athletes at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics in particular the performances of Chioma Ajunwa who won the first Gold medal for Nigeria and the Dream Team led by Kanu Nwankwo.

He noted, however, that the successes recorded had been waning over the years and that there was the need to retrace Nigeria’s sporting steps.

“This retreat is timely, given the recent disappointing performance of Team Nigeria at the 2012 Olympics in London and our recent lows in football competitions among others.

“This unacceptable trend points to systemic failures that urgently call for a drastic and holistic review of our sports policies,’’ President Jonathan said.

He noted that the retreat was not designed to apportion blames or point accusing fingers, but to find solutions and design a framework for achieving national sporting excellence.

He tasked states governors to identify potentials where they have comparative advantages in sporting event for development.

The president also called on the private sector to devise means of supporting sporting activities.

    Angola wants Eagles AFCON warm-up

Angola has proposed a warm-up game against Nigeria before the 2013 Nations Cup, officials told MTNFootball.com.

Angola Football Association vice-president, Joao Lusevikueno said in an interview on Monday they wish to test their readiness for the forthcoming AFCON in South Africa against Nigeria.

“We have proposed to play a match against Nigeria and we hope it come through,” Lusevikueno said in a radio interview.

Both countries clashed in a similar game in January while the Angolans were preparing for the 2012 tournament in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

The match against Nigeria’s home-based stars in Abuja ended in a goalless draw.

Angola qualified for its seventh Nations Cup after eliminating Zimbabwe on away goals rule.

The Palancas Negras, who played hosts in 2010, beat Zimbabwe 2-0 at home to cancel out a 3-1 loss in Harare.

Nigeria defeated Liberia 8-3 on aggregate to reach 2013 AFCON.

The Super Eagles will take on Venezuela in a friendly next month in the United States, while a training camp for players in the Nigeria Premier League has been planned for Europe before a final residential training most likely in Zimbabwe.

  • Ex- minister lauds FG’s waiver of import duties on aircraft

A former Minister of Aviation, Mr. Felix Hyat, has lauded President Goodluck Jonathan over the waiver of import duty on commercial aircraft and spare parts.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria in Jos on Monday that the waiver would enhance safety and reduce the high operating cost incurred by Nigerian airlines.

Jonathan had announced the waiver while presenting the 2013 budget proposal to the National Assembly last Wednesday in Abuja.

The former minister praised the president for mustering the political will to incorporate the tariff waiver in the 2013 budget proposal.

He said this had given vent to the long-sought relief for domestic airlines which have been reeling under the weight of heavy operating costs.

“The waiver is a welcome development. The decision taken by the federal government is a very welcome development, which will go a long way in improving the state of maintenance and ensuring safety,’’ Hyat said.

On his assessment of the aviation industry presently, Hyat said there was an improvement in the structures while there had not been a commensurate improvement in service provision.

“There is an improvement in the structure and facilities, but sadly too there is a decline in the availability of air transport to the public,’’ he said.

The former minister said there was a sharp difference between the number of people who want to travel and the availability of aircraft.

“The number of people who wish to travel by air has greatly increased, but the availability of the aircraft or functional or performing airlines is lacking, and this is a very serious problem.

“Nowadays, we see passengers spending days, not just hours, at the airports waiting for their flights and at the end of the day the flights are cancelled and they are stranded.

“It is a chaotic situation that begs for urgent solution and I think the recent pronouncement of waiver on duties of aircraft’ spare parts will help matters,’’ he said.

The head of the intelligence branch of the Internal Security Forces had been an outspoken critic of the government of Bashar al-Assad in neighbouring Syria and its allies in Lebanon, and Lebanese opposition figures have blamed Damascus for the attack.

They have called on Prime Minister Najib Mikati to resign.

He offered to do so on Saturday but President Michel Suleiman asked him to stay on in the national interest.

Thousands of people attended Gen. Hassan’s state funeral in Beirut on Sunday, which rapidly became a political rally against both Mr. Mikati and Syria.

Addressing the funeral, former Prime Minister Fouad al-Siniora, a prominent member of the Western-backed 14 March opposition alliance, blamed the government for his death, and said it must stand down, insisting: “No dialogue over the blood of our martyrs.”

The former Vice Chancellor of Cameroonian University, Prof. Beban Chumbow, hailed the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) initiatives on reform which had made positive impact on other African Universities.

  • Israel intercepts Gazza bound boat

    Israel intercepts Gazza bound boat

The Israeli navy has intercepted a boat of pro-Palestinian activists trying to break the blockade of the Gaza Strip.

BBC says the Finnish-flagged Estelle left Naples on October 7 with some 30 people of eight different nationalities aboard.

The boat was boarded 30 nautical miles off the coast of Gaza, activists said, before being taken to the Israeli port of Ashdod.

The Israeli military said the ship would be searched and the activists would be questioned then deported.

It said there was no resistance from the activists and the Israeli military did not use force.

Israel tightened the blockade after the Islamist group Hamas came to power in the coastal sliver in 2007.

The Estelle, which activists say is carrying cement, basketballs, musical instruments, and 30 doves, is the latest vessel to try and break the Gaza blockade.

Among those on board are politicians from several European countries and Israeli activists.

Activist spokeswoman Victoria Strand said Israel had carried out a “demonstration of ruthlessness,” whilst a spokesman for Hamas called it an act of “pircacy.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the activists were trying “to provoke and slander Israel’s name.”

“If human rights were really important to these activists they would have sailed for Syria. We will continue to protect our borders,” he said.

Esperance qualify for Champions League final

Esperance beat TP Mazembe 1-0 in Tunis on Saturday evening to reach this year’s African Champions League final, MTNFootball.com reports.

The four-time champions struggled in the first half away in Tunisia against Esperance, who had two great attempts before heading into the break scoreless.

Eight minutes into the game, Esperance and Blacks Stars defender Harrison Afful tested Mazembe goalkeeper Muteba Kidiaba with a header that the latter parried.

Afful put Kidiaba under pressure again in the 23rd minute with a long range effort that Mazembe’s inspirational goalkeeper deflected.

Mazembe had one good chance in the 35 minutes through striker Given Singuluma but the Zambian skied his shot over the bar.

The Tunisians made sure of their second successive Champions League final appearance through Mohamed Ben Masour who scored from a tight angle after turning in a Khalil Chemmam free kick.

Mazambe had a great chance deep into the final minute to stretch the contest through Singuluma again but his attempt was saved by Moez Ben Chrifia.

Esperance now await the winner of Sunday’s semifinal clash in Cairo between Al Ahly of Egypt and Sunshine Stars of Nigeria.

The two teams played a 3-3 draw the first leg played in Nigeria on October 6.

  • Nigerian embassy in Germany attacked

    Nigerian embassy in Germany attacked

The Nigerian Embassy in Berlin was attacked with paint bombs by unknown persons on Wednesday night, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

A police spokesman told NAN that unknown attackers threw glass bottles filled with a thick and sticky liquid at the front of the building in Neue Jakobstraße, (The name of the street where the embassy is situated).

The spokesman said the police had handed over the investigation of the incident to state security authorities, adding that political motive may not be ruled out in the attack.

The police said security workers noticed the damage to the building on Thursday morning.

The spokesman said that on Monday, 120 activists, members of the “Refugee Protest March in Berlin campaign” gathered in front of the Nigerian Embassy to demonstrate against the practice of deporting asylum seekers from Germany.

According to him, 14 of the activists illegally entered to the embassy, in order to “occupy’’ it as part of the protest march.

He explained that those who entered the premises were later ejected by security officials while 25 of the protesters were temporarily detained and later released.

The spokesman stated that the demonstrators accused the embassy workers of “working closely with the German state to ensure that the processing of the largest number of deportations from Africa came from Nigeria.”
